Don't forget about FFsplit, which is a ~~opensource~~ broadcasting software too, based on ffmpeg.
EDIT: FFsplit doesn't seem to be opensource, at least I can't find the source. anyways, it's still a good streaming app.
Completely free alternatives:
Open Broadcaster Software - Open Source as well, one of the most popular to-date.
FFSplit - Free Livestream & Recording tool. A tad harder on my system than OBS has been.
Look on FFsplit's forums, you'll see they have programs that work with full-screen. I forget the name and stuff, but seriously look on their forums.
Okay fine, I wasn't lazy and I got it for you. http://www.ffsplit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=235&sid=95920c1f4d3432d1dedda49eca7f9ca0
Look at 2.1.2, Dxtory
This may sound contradictory coming from someone who loves Starcraft, but software monopolies are a bad thing, and unfortunately Xsplit doesn't have any viable contenders yet. FFsplit looks promising, but the project looks quite new and is still in alpha.
For anyone wondering why software monopolies are bad, the need for this topic in the first place is a great example. The act of streaming, one of the most fundamental activities of starcraft, was jeopardized by the way the Skype developers designed their software, and if there are no alternatives, then you're forced to come up with hacks like OP's, which isn't always possible. Technical issues on shows like State of the Game are another example; if something goes wrong with Xsplit or Skype, everyone just has to get on their knees and pray that the gods of binary are good.
I make an exception for Starcraft itself because we necessarily have to be on the same page if things like strategy are going to have any meaning, but there's nothing in the Starcraft fan contract that says we have to use Xsplit and Skype as well.
While I'm at it, I'll go ahead and plug /r/FreeCulture as a good place to go if you want to learn more.
Hey there. If you have an Nvidia graphics card I would suggest using Nvidia ShadowPlay. It's what I use for recording.
If you don't, I would suggest using FFsplit. It's a better alternative to Xsplit.
For both of these you'll probably have to tweak some settings and do some finagling but oh well.
I currently use FFsplit. It's free, lightweight, and can record multiple sources and arrange them on the canvas any way you like. Also doesn't try to sell you anything on the side. PM me if you want help setting it up. The camera is a cheap and slow Microsoft 1407 webcam, that doesn't do more than 640x480 and maybe 10fps. It has a nice side effect of motion blur of my fingers, feels like I'm a fat Bruce Lee, too fast for the camera.
Previous recording setups:
I have tried the Raptr GVR recording (the other video on my channel), but it's barely configurable and requires to launch an in-game overlay (a poor man's Steam in-game access). Last month after a driver update it stopped working, telling me my video card is too old for video recording. Raptr, you're a lying bitch.
Steam doesn't offer in-game recording, just streaming, and it's just the game window and a chat (no webcam), available to beta Steam users only, buried in the Community tab.
Great guide. I have used FFSplit to great effect in SC2 and TF2, among others. Like the one you mentioned, it's a small-footprint XSplit alternative whose only real downside is the relative lack of features. The plus side is you don't need to use Dxtory for screengrabbing.
After the initial trouble of setting everything up right, it is a slick piece of software.
Have you tried the website where you download FFSplit?
http://www.ffsplit.com/how-to-install/
The only thing you need to know that isn't said there is "USB Microphones are currently bugged and will kill your stream prematurely, expect a fix in one or two versions."
http://www.ffsplit.com/download/
use that instead, records and compresses so you can upload straight to youtube, can also be used to stream.
sample footage: https://youtu.be/R7pawpYQ1b0?t=16m10s taken at 4000 kbps record quality (this used 1.5gb HD space per hour of footage)
I did not need to convert the file format OR edit the footage in any way.
FFSplit maybe? I've used it for a very long time. It does the job pretty well, but it seems to be somewhat CPU heavy. Haven't had any issues with it on Windows 10, though it's not listed as supported.
What was that thing? You provide no description...
Instead of recording the monitor with a camera, I would suggest installing some screen capture software. You will find lots of questionable shareware if you search e.g. "screen video capture", but thankfully the advent of e-sports, twitch and online streaming has provided us with free streaming software such as Open Broadcaster Software and FFsplit. While primarily intended for streaming, they can also capture high-quality video locally to a file, and as they are intended mainly for gaming they are fairly lightweight on resources.
Screen Capturing - http://www.ffsplit.com/
FFSPLIT is a freeware program that allows you to capture or record your desktop in different high quality video format.
Video Editing - http://shotcut.org/bin/view/Shotcut
Shotcut is the new free cross platform videoeditor which let's you do pretty much everything you'll need including picture in picture.
I like to use ffsplit since it's free, light weight and can stream to twitch at the same time. Biggest thing for me is its compression seems to do better then fraps. http://www.ffsplit.com
Personally i would just try out different capture software and decide. A lot of people have been using fraps for a long time since when it came out it was basically the best affordable then. But since then there's been a lot of good competition. I think steam even sells one that is supposed to be good.
Use a program called FFSplit. It will allow you to record just the game window, and use the computer audio source and any microphone source you tell it to in combination.
It's what I use to record games AND stream to twitch.tv
It is free and open source. http://www.ffsplit.com/
New programme out called FFSplit. Lot of potential. Renders straight to MP4 and records nice high bit rate audio which FRAPS on the microphone aspect cannot. Very nice indeed...
Hi there! Missed your stream unfortunately, but I did see the VOD and have a few comments for you.
1) Commentary, it's really important to the viewer (especially those of us without HOTS!) and changes your stream from "That hots terran guy" to something more personal.
2) Think I saw you had a webcam? Wouldn't hurt to put that in your SC2 UI, right?
3) Consider FFSplit or OBS instead of Xsplit. Xsplit is great. But, it costs money, and unless you have a really high end machine, you can't really make use of the features of it. In particular, OBS provides scene switching and is much lighter of a resource hog than XSplit.
4) Don't forget to delete your stream thread, otherwise you get creeps trolling your Vods, like me!
Did you check your recording and playback devices settings to be stereo 44100Hz 16bit and unchecked allow exclusive control? This can solve a lot of sound issues in ffsplit. If this won't help, you can always try their support forum: http://www.ffsplit.com/forums/ - people there are usually helpful.
I like FFsplit more than xsplit. I get better quality on FFsplit, but its not as user friendly as xsplit is, and it doesn't have extra options for multi-stream and stuff like that. http://www.ffsplit.com/ to download http://www.ffsplit.com/how-to-install/ easy to follow guide to get you set up, you'll need to tweak the bitrate based on your upload speed though, so just play around with that. Feel free to send me a PM if you run into any confusion with the set up :).
I had nothing but issues with xsplit for dota, sorry you bought it. hopefully it will get better but I have since found something way better. FFsplit Made by a redditor and its free and easy to use.
One other thing. When you are streaming, you have to run it in a window. Nothing that I know of will pick up full screen it just gives you a black screen. So borderless window is as good as it gets. It has been a while since I used xsplit but I believe you can just pick the screen itself and not the game source. Try that.
