Download link to update your LAV filters!
I love how this got Spam Filter'd. x.x
Thanks for writing this up for us!
[](#fistpump)
Edit: It just got spam filter'd again... wtffff
Edit2: And again...
Edit3: Oh ffs! Lowered the spam filter settings for self posts and it immediately gets filtered again. Grr!
Edit4: There! Onto the approved submitters list with ye.
Edit5: SPAM FILTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Edit6: added LAV Filter link. This is to fix the spam filter problem OP's post was having, it is no different from the one he had in his post.
It is actually clipped like that. I thought it was a decoder bug, but it seems to be a common practice that a DTS decoder has to handle it:
> LAV Audio
> Fixed: Improved clipping behavior in badly mastered DTS-HD tracks
Edit: in Audacity, or open the 6 channel WAV in your preferred DAW/editor.
I'm assuming what's happening is your player is trying to decode HEVC files on the CPU, which it's too slow. No problem though, because you can use your GTX 1080 to accelerate the video!
You need to install LAV Filters and enable CUVID in the video options, which will let the GTX handle all the heavy lifting. In DeoVR, enable the DirectShow option to use this decoder.

Tutorial (for slightly different player/codec pack but check the LAV Filters section for some screenshots)
Good luck fellow VR lover!
Hello, If you have Windows 10 you could try installing HEVC Video extensions from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc-video-extensions-from-device-manufacturer/9n4wgh0z6vhq. If that does not work you could also try installing codecs. Preferable LAV filters and K-Lite codecs.
LAV filters: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases K-Lite codec pack: https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
I hope this helps.
You might want to try the older standalone release of DeoVR: http://deovr.com/
Download the 'Vive' release. The newer Steam version looks promising but as it's a rewrite in progress it's missing some of the features of the older version, and maybe there are performance issues. It's just a guess, but it's worth a shot.
With the standalone, use the hardware accelerated batch file that is included. You also want to install LAVFilters and enable Direct Show support in DeoVR. You might also need to configure LAVFilters to enable hardware acceleration, but I can't remember the process off the top of my head (should be simple).
Are you sure you followed the instructions on the pcgamingwiki for disabling the blizzard codec properly?
First you install the lav filters (x86, even if your computer is x64, also use the installer not just the zip(it registers the codecs last time I looked at it))
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
Then you must open a command prompt as administrator >cd PATH-TO-W3-HERE
>regsvr32 /u blizzard.ax
You could also make a bat file inside the same directory as War3.exe and place
>regsvr32 /u blizzard.ax
inside it and then right click and run that as admin.
then delete blizzard.ax
I just tested this on a clean windows 10 VM and the cutscenes worked properly after following those directions. Also, worked on the main computer I use as well
I Fixed this by Installing the LAVFilters (most recent) :
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
And Setting the game to Fullscreen from the Engine window -> Visuals -> Fullscreen.
Everytime I tried to get through the movie (I wanted to watch it... ) it would Blackscreen when in Windowed mode.
Install LAVFilters for DirectShow support, this should get most videos playing by default using DirectShow: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
If you want to play the really high resolution ones without lags or any problems though you need to download and install the Microsoft HEVC Video Extensions: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc-video-extensions/9nmzlz57r3t7
https://www.free-codecs.com/download/hevc_video_extension.htm
Then disable/untick "DirectShow" in DeoVR and it should play back files using that with hardware video decoding if you have the proper hardware (1080 or above tier graphics card).
The key itself is no secret on the Interwebs (I don't think you can buy it anymore) -- just google "microsoft expression encoder key" and you'll find it pretty quickly.
And then for file imports, try LAV Filter : https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases . This is what use to import MKV files for re-encoding.
I know this fixed my problem of not being able to smoothly play 5k hevc video, it might help you as well.
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
Install this, then configure the "Hardware Decoder" box
(upper right of video tab) and change it to Nvidia Cuvid. (if it isn't already)
That will enable video decoding in VR to take full advantage of your 10xx series card.
Windows users tend to use LAVFilters for this, so you could try installing that. I wouldn't recommend manually dropping in DLLs.
You might also try installing ffdshow with winetricks.
Well my general method is to install LAVFilters (for video decoding) and then use a player like Virtual Desktop, Deo Player etc with my Rift. You need a decent GPU for this. I don't think mobile headsets like the Go can playback 5K video without special custom programming.
> Does it increase quality considering that Rift resolution is limited?
If you're watching 180/360 degree videos, higher video resolution does make a difference, because the resolution is stretched over the whole area where you can turn your head. If you're just watching on a virtual 2D screen (like in BigScreen etc) it's less important and IIRC there's not much point in going beyond 720p.
Found this > for videos cinematics i installed lavfilters, found in: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
here https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=35226
My suggestion is to download the LAV filters if you haven't already done so: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
It has a video configuration where you can set what type of hardware acceleration to use. See if that makes a difference.
Also I know that the video path used can make a huge difference. Having the player use FFDSHOW is usually much faster than MediaFoundation for example. I don't use VLC so I'm not sure where the settings for that stuff is.
I found the issue, I forgot to transfer over the LAV filters when I moved the files my mistake. Here is the download for them I hope it fixes your problem as well https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
I've never used this K-Lite codec pack, so I can't speak to it's HEVC capabilities.
What I can say is I've happily run the MPC-Home Cinema (link) for years now and rely on the LAV Filters DirectShow Media Splitter and Decoders (link); which I believe are now internally included with the setup. (I only use external versions as well in order to handle multi-channel/PCM/etc due to swapping between desktop stereo and AV Receiver).
Install hardware codecs for this type of videos. Every laptop made past 2011 should have hardware accelerated H264 content, generally up to 2000x2000 resolution at least.
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases Or use PotPlayer, which has IMO the best out of box support for various types of videos.
You probably need to install a codec pack, e.g. one of those:
Some VR players have options to change which path the video decoding takes (e.g. if it goes to the GPU/CPU, DirectShow, etc.). This can also impact performance and compatibility.
You shouldn't need anything by Microsoft unless you want to use the default Windows video player.
I use LAV Video decoder (with MPC-HC) to decode AV1 on my GPU just fine.
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
I tested the game here.
First try installing https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/download/0.74.1/LAVFilters-0.74.1-Installer.exe in your wine prefix.
For me it play the intro movie without lib32-gst-plugins-bad. With lib32-gst-plugins-bad it works even without installing LAVFilters.
If this doesn't work try renaming or moving the two video files.
You also have to install dsound with winetricks to the start the game or load.
The OP movie doesn't play for me, but you can skip it.
Sorry for the late reply. If I remember correctly, it worked nearly out of the box for me (except I needed to install LAVFilters for the videos to work, and, like you set launch locale to Japanese, which should not require the Locale Emulator since this is for Windows). However, I'm using the devel version of Wine (aka not development, but not stable either) which was version 5.19 (and now is 5.20), and if you tried everything below and it still does not work, try changing your wine version to devel. What version of Azure have you tried to patch (IIRC, the Chinese port does not work with it, but the leaked version should)? By "no text shows up" do you mean that you get a black screen at startup or that you get the menu but no text? Generally, if you get a pure black screen it's most likely something failed to load (and you should have the logs somewhere to see what's wrong). Have you set dinput8 as native -> integrated library in winecfg (required for most Kiseki mod patches, tho it should not be necessary here). If you do not know how to do it: Open winecfg for your prefix (if you're using an helper application like PlayOnLinux/PlayOnMac, there should be a function for it somewhere), go to the "Libraries" tab, enter "dinput8" in the field of "new replacement for" and click Add.
If none of the above work, try sending in the logs (there should be an option for them).
i found a website talk about downloading lav filters in your potplayer and i'm going to use lav just for the audio right ?
and thanks for help sorry for the question
I always used Virtual Desktop to play vids. There are some free players out there like DeoVR but I don't have a lot of experience with them personally.
If you're having trouble playing very high-resolution videos smoothly, installing LAVFilters can help.
For me the issue was kind of solved after i installed this : https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
not sure if it will work for you.
I dont know enough about the workings of the VN to diagnose the problem properly, but if it is LAV filters , then you can update those by downloading the installer and just running it
Thank you so much for helping! Those solutions didn't quite work for me (I have an older computer, so maybe that's why...)
HOWEVER, I did find a rather novel solution from this thread...https://steamcommunity.com/app/477740/discussions/4/133260492067489424/?l=ukrainian
Basically head over to this site and download the LAVFilters Installer. LAVFilters-0.74.1-Installer.exe https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
I have no idea why it worked, but it did. Also not sure if it matters, but I switched the graphics thing to OpenGL.
Seems you are using software decode. CPU lack of power to handle the job. You have to install LAV to turn on your GPU hardware decode option. https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
You'll need to install wine and winetricks (I don't have a mac, so I can't help you there). Then you run the installer for the game using wine (in the terminal, that would be wine installer.exe
, where installer.exe
is the installer program). Then, you install the game as you would on windows.
At this point, you should be able to run the game, but without prerendered videos. To get these, you need to run winetricks quartz
and winetricks amstream
and install LAVfilters via wine. You can find more infos on https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=35267.
Thanks for the steps, I can confirm that this (almost) works with wine 5.4.0 (current winehq-development, from winehq) on debian 10. I had to reinstall LAVfilters after the installation though; otherwise the game crashes on the first video (on the train).
And of course thanks to all involved in the translation!
Just install both then
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/tag/0.74.1
That way you should have the required addon for hardware video decoding for both types of media player application.
You probably don't have the right codecs installed. On Windows 10 make sure you have the HEVC extensions installed. This applies only to h.265 videos (mostly 5/6k).
In addition you should have installed either LAV filters or K-Lite Codec Pack. I also would highly recommend DeoVR for 180/360 on the PC.
It's definitely not your hardware being too weak.
Dont have latest LAVFilter installed: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/download/0.74.1/LAVFilters-0.74.1-Installer.exe
Is just that the format of the video is weird and your PC doesnt support it just install it and should work.
Whirligig on Windows normally requires the FFDShow videopath, plus LAVFilters to perform well. The same may apply with Proton, if it's possible to get those working on Linux.
Which codecs do you have installed? Recommended is:
And one of these two:
LAV filters
Also, like VR-Geek mentioned, you can check if it works better with "Nvidia Cuvid" checked for "Hardware decoder to use" in LAV settings.
My laptop isn't charging anymore lol. This will probably be my last post for now.
For the record, I haven't gotten videos working on Rewrite either. So far, there's been 2 visual novels I've failed to get videos working on (that are serious, some just fade to black and then continue on). One being rewrite, and the other being "If you love me say so". As far as I can tell, the gstreamer plugins are the answer, however, I have a really weird issue with my computer where decoding certain things crashes my computer on both Windows and Linux.
So I can't actually know that this solution works, however what I do know is that without the gstreamer plugins the game just crashes. With gstreamer plugins, my entire system crashes. So something has changed and I bet it has to do with video decoding.
If you end up looking into it further, I feel as if the gstreamrer plugins are the right direction. Maybe theres something I've missed.
You can look into installing LAVFilters, which is another common way to get videos working in Visual Novels. You might have more luck there.
For now, just having the save workaround is probably best. Sorry I couldn't help you fix this specific issue. It's got me stumped in a lot of ways too. I'm concerned that the VN might crash before it counts a route as completed (since it'll crash during the ED of whatever route you're on), though I haven't confirmed that it does or does not do that.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Though, Until I get a new charger for my laptop, I'll be recalling from memory only.
Which Windows 10 do you have? If you don't have Professional try installing those: HEVC Video extensions
and perhaps LAV Filters in case you don't have them.
I know this fixed my problem of not being able to smoothly play 5k hevc video, but it might help you as well.
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases

Install this, then configure the part that mentions the video decoding and change it to Nvidia.
When playing in SLR, do you have DirectShow turned on or off in additional settings? Do you have all the necessary codecs for watching the videos? We recommend HEVC Video extensions (If you have Windows Pro, those should be already installed on the computer)
And one of those two:
If you go to task manager and go to performance while playing the video, is there any decoding done with your GPU?
What kind of GPU do you have? Would you mind sending output log file located in C:\Users\%username%\AppData\LocalLow\DeoVR\DeoVR to so we take a look at it? You have Oculus Rift right? Are you playing files locally? Do you have all the recommended drivers installed perhaps? HEVC Video extensions (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc-video-extensions-from-device-manufacturer/9n4wgh0z6vhq)
And one of those two:
K-Lite codec pack (https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm)
LAV filters (https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases)
hopefully this all makes sense. download mpc-hc https://mpc-hc.org/downloads/
download lav filters installer. https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases after installing, configure lav video settings. in LAV Video settings, under hardware acceleration, use DXVA2 (copy back).
download madvr. https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=146228
unzip madr, and put madvr folder that you unzipped somewhere were you will not delete it. in the folder, run the "install.bat" after installing, run "madHcCtrl.exe" a madvr tray icon will be in your tray area, click on it, go to "edit madvr settings". window will pop up, left-hand side click on "devices" folder. click on "add new device" button. go back left hand side, click on the little arrow drop down list button near the "devices" folder. click on drop down near "new device". goto hdr option
If you have HDR tv/monitor select "passthrough HDR to display" if you dont have HDR tv/monitor select "tone map HDR using pixel shaders"
start up mpc and go to view, options. on left hand side, under "playback" goto "output" under "DirectShow Video" click on drop down and select "madVR"
on left hand side, click on "internal filters". right click in both columns (source filters and transform filters) and "Disable All Filters" so everything is unchecked in both columns. we dont want these internal mpc filters because LAV audio and video will handle everything pretty much.
now left hand side, click on "external filters", then click on "add filter" and one by one, add LAV Audio Decoder LAV Splitter LAV Splitter Source LAV Video Decoder
Apply, ok, all done.
Hi,
Are you trying to stream or watch videos locally? Do you have all the codecs installed? As /u/doublevr asked which headset do you use HEVC Video extensions (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc-video-extensions-from-device-manufacturer/9n4wgh0z6vhq)
And one of those two:
K-Lite codec pack (https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm)
LAV filters (https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases)
You can still download the file on HDD and play it in the app or perhaps try it in DeoVR. Important is to download the h265 version. Do you have HEVC Video extensions and codecs such as K-Lite codec pack or LAV Filters?
I just update MPC-HC filters from time to time https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases (you need to delete/replace old files inside LAVFilters64 folder of your MPC-HC install).
So far it works for me.
You could maybe try to just use the LAVFilters (which is the only thing you really need here): https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
Which has a .bat file included that install it but nothing is gonna let you install the codec on an USB since this has to modify the registry and whatnot.
By the way, if you want KCP you can get it here: http://haruhichan.com/projects/KCP/
Are you running Windows 7? We've seen this on Windows 7 machines that do not have a codec pack installed. Can you try installing LAV Filters and let me know if that solves the problem?
The problem is that the default decoders in Windows 7 cannot handle h265 or 4k video. LAV Filters should do the trick.
This is all of course assuming that I'm right about your OS, if not please let me know what operating system and GPU you're working with :)
If this is on PC:
I had issues with both 999 and VLR. Since I had to fix it for 999 first, I don't know if the same fix is applicable.
Spike Chunsoft recommends installing this LAV filter
There are some guides at the Whirlgig discussions forums.
Simple guide.
Download LAV Filters, choose the installer exe.
Install LAV Filters at the finish it will ask you if you want to open the configurations for each filter, select at least LAV Video Configuration.
In LAV Video Configuration, checkmark "Enable System Tray Icon". Set "Hardware Decoder to use" to "DXVA (copy-back). Check that UHD, HEVC, VC1 are checkmarked and click OK.
Launch SteamVR, launch Whirlgig, play the video you have problem then remove your headset and see in your monitor if the tray icon for LAV Video Filter shows up. If it doesn't you will have to download Codec Tweak Tool and force the LAV Video Filter as the default, I will expand to that if it's needed.
If the tray icon shows up, open it and check if Active Hardware Accelerator shows your graphics card.
I am not sure if and how to check your R9 390x does support the needed H265 acceleration. From googling last years drivers didn't support it so you might have to install the latest drivers.
You basically just need the LAV filters @ https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases and a player that uses system installed (DirectShow?) filters. MPC-HC is a good player for it if you don't mind the somewhat barebones player.
You could try installing this, it usually solves video related problems. If that doesn't work I think you can safely move on to Alternative if my memory isn't failing me.
You're mistaken. MPC-HC comes with LAV Filters "self-contained", just like VLC comes with libavcodec/FFmpeg. MPC-HC also has better hardware decoding support and other nice features, and because of LAV Filters plays pretty much everything that VLC does.
> MPC-HC requires a codec pack for Windows
No, it doesn't! MPC-HC has LAV Filters "baked in", just like VLC has libavcodec/FFmpeg. MPC-HC also has better hardware decoding support and other nice features that VLC lacks. VLC on the other hand can also be used as a converter between formats, whereas MPC-HC is just a player.
I'm aware or three completely free alternatives. all of these let me choose a specific audio device.
used it a lot since 2002. it outputs AVI files with whatever codec you tell it to use.
mainly created to record a directshow device such as tv tuner cards, and composite input cards.
it has added some kind of support for recording the desktop but there may be problems such as audio video desync. do extensive testing and reconfiguration before using it for production.
(I need to check again how well it handles game capture, possibly windowed only)
I'm using OBS to do local file recording. OBS is made for streaming but I use it for local recording and I have set up a special recording profile with a bunch of settings to get high quality recordings.
it records two audio devices.
it outputs FLV file containing H264 video and AAC/MP3 audio. I don't know how well it is usable in most video editors.
Windows Live Movie Maker was able to open this after I installed LAVFilters but seeking long recordings will take a long time.
it's pretty new. have not used it much. it outputs MP4 or MKV file with H264 and AAC/MP3. it didn't expose any advanced video encoding settings like OBS does.
Mishira's audio mixer appears to be highly configurable with seemingly unlimited audio devices. needs lots of experimentation to find out what it can and can't do.
> To avoid running into an error when the vita openings play at the end of Day 3, get the latest LAV filter here.
Did you install the LAV filters? https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
From the MaxVR readme: > LAV Filters (Download LAV filters Link) These are required and need to be set as the "Preferred" decoder. If you have other installed filters on your system such as FFDShow, K-Lite, etc they may interfere and override LAVFilters. I'm only supporting LAVFilters as they are the best ones out there and are "modern" so to speak in regards to technological advances in Filter Development.
Gnolli is right. Also I'll leave this here just in case you run in to issues with the videos:
>Q: My game is crashing when I reach an OP, the error message says "EAccessViolation", what do I do?
>A: We've gotten many cases of this. The problem is with your hardware, not the patch. The solution we've found is for the user to install the latest LAV filters. Here's a link to download them: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/download/0.62/LAVFilters-0.62-Installer.exe
Also you are probably going to need to change your system locale to Japanese.
To do so:
> Control Panel > Region and Languages > Administrative > Change System Local > Japanese ( Japan ).
I know exactly how to fix that actually, one sec. You need to download/update something.
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/download/0.62/LAVFilters-0.62-Installer.exe
This should be it. You need to update some filters or something. Someone helped me back when I first stared.
Also, is your system's locale set to Japan? That could be it too if the above doesn't work.
As for if you're missing out, the Realta Nua does make things a LOT cooler than the Fuwa novel. Same story, but Realta Nua makes it look so much nicer.
I already helped him out via PM but I'll post here the solution in case anyone else face this issue.
From the English Patch FAQ:
>Q: My game is crashing when I reach an OP, the error message says "EAccessViolation", what do I do?
>A: We've gotten many cases of this. The problem is with your hardware, not the patch. The solution we've found is for the user to install the latest LAV filters. Here's a link to download them: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/download/0.62/LAVFilters-0.62-Installer.exe
