Wow. It's weird that they removed it. You can install an app to bring it back though. Fingerprint Gestures: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures&hl=en
I didn't know apps could handle fingerprint gestures before seeing this, so I googled and found this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures&hl=en
Haven't tried it yet.
There's another app with better reviews but the description on that one says it prevents you from unlocking your phone with the fingerprint sensor.
did you even bother searching? fingerprint gestures app on google play
no root required
edit: also screen/mousepad gestures are tacky and i hate them, the fingerprint reader is nice though coz my index finger naturally rests on the fingerprint reader when i'm using my phone - i don't have to remember some weird abracadabra gesture shit to do something like go back to the home screen
edit2: just tried the gesture stuff on my mum's iphone(she's old so gotta give her tech that she can goto an apple store genius to figure out) and it's just weird and doesn't support muscle memory for me.
I found like, half a solution. If you're willing to give up the notification one, I found an app that lets you use it to open the app drawer, provided you use Nova launcher (haven't found a default launcher way yet) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
It seems to override the swipe down one when I try on mine, doesn't differentiate between up and down.
For anyone who wants to, you set the fast tap (swipe) to a Nova action, and the first one should be app drawer.
Fingerprint sensor can be used for scrolling, at least on some phones.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
Still, it's too slow as a trigger button.
I would rather have shoulder buttons like on a ROG phone, as a default option for high-end phones. Or at least remap Volume keys.
There are a couple of apps in the PlayStore for these gestures. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures&hl=en . They work fine but they tend to stop once in a while and have to manually launch the app.
I searched a little..
There are a few phones that support it: https://www.androidauthority.com/google-pixel-fingerprint-scanner-gestures-725490/
Although this app doesn't look like it's too highly rated: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures&hl=en
Fingerprint Gestures is able to do that I guess. Root is not needed for basic functions.
There is also Fingerprint Quick Action which is similar to the first app I guess.
Enjoy.
It is not available on stock. There is however an app that you can set a bunch of gestures with, though to scroll requires root.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures&hl=en
If anyone uses this I recommend turning off the swipe down for notification shade gesture.
i have long press back button mapped to expand notifications, as well as a press on the finger print sensor while the screen is on will expand notifications from any screen.
If you're rooted you can use the Fingerprint Gestures app to scroll and do a few other things.
I'm not rooted but started using this for my torch...was previously using Torchie but it unfortunately wasn't working well with the Pixel's volume rocker.
Try these two. May not work sometimes.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ztc1997.fingerprint2sleep
Wait so you want the fingerprint reader to act as the power button when the phone is on, in order to lock the phone?
According to the second screenshot on this fingerprint action app you would need root. The g5 had the app managing that installed as system and as such didn't need root.
I haven't seen any new devices with the smart key but there are 3rd party apps (including one by XDA) that can make it like a button. This one can do single and double tap as well as swipe https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
The phone has plain stock android, it doesn't include any extra features like that.
As to third party options, as far as I can see, only one fingerprint gestures app on Play store mentions a gesture to put the phone to sleep (the action requires root): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures

Good find!
The Fingerprint Gestures app by SuperThomasLab actually works. I have now assigned:
Seems to only work when the V20 is on already.
Also, my fingers are quite thick, so I still need some practicing.
UPDATE: I have already uninstalled the app. The 3 available gestures single tap, double tap and swipe are too difficult and unreliable for me differentiate. More often miss than hit. Not worth the trouble. It is a free app, so it may still be worth a try for anyone reading this.
Some have said that https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures is worth a shot, though I couldn't get any of the gestures to work. Though, I haven't tried it in a long time.
It's good to have an official functionality but isn't that late? You can do more with a fingerprint scanner now...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
Well, there is fingerprint gestures, so the tech is there, but it's really inaccurate, ANNOYING as hell after 10 minutes of trying already...
I found this app when trying to utilize the fingerprint sensor for other functions. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures&hl=en It has a lower rating than another I found, but has a lot more tools which does include the ability to turn on the flashlight.
No that isn't working yet. I downloaded an app called fingerprint gestures that adds very similar functionality
As far as I know it isn't possible by default, but I've found that this app works pretty well.
Maybe with an app like Fingerprint Gestures. Going to try it myself now.
The Fingerprint Gestures app would probably work, but it needs root.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
Here you go. Great app works very well.
From third party app. I have set it to toggle notificatons shade on fast tap on fingerprint scanner. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
I prefer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
Let's you set profiles. And has more options
Have you tried apps like this?
I recommend this app, but there are others on the Play Store that accomplish the same thing. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
There is an app for this
Not a perfect solution, but this app works well enough to enable it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
If your phone is rooted, I think this can do the job -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
Check if this app works for you https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
There's an app for that
I don't exactly recall what that app he commented was, sorry. The link is broken for me too. Try this maybe?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures
try this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superthomaslab.fingerprintgestures&hl=en_US
note 9 doesnt need it. only drops notifications panel

Fingerprint Gestures - I've been using this.
How well does it work?
I use this to toggle my flashlight, but that's another common use for it. It's awesome.
