For those of you doing a lifting program, I wholeheartedly recommend Personal Training Coach , automatic weight updates, plate calculator, timer, easy calendar view, interactive graphs, exercise database, workout program chooser and more. I used to use Fitnotes, which is more versatile, but Personal Training Coach has been a massive time saver and app of great convenience, incredibly refined and functional app. Super friendly and helpful Dev too.
Been a loyal Relay user for my redditing experience, but past month or two getting constant problems handling images and videos that are hosted on reddit, thought I would give the competition a try, and have settled on Joey, really well-designed app with incredible functionality, only thing I miss from relay is being able to click the subreddit name to get a scrolling list of all my subscribed subreddits. Other than that it has improved what I already though a stellar redditing experience.
Newpipe is a wicked youtube replacement that has the option of background play, really helped my commute.
I've been using Personal Training Coach for tracking my weightlifting lately and I like it a lot. Has most of the popular beginners routines (including SS, SL, GSLP and the Phrak GSLP variant), with some intermediate ones with more coming. It tracks sets and time between them in a similar way to the SL app, and automatically increases weights between workouts in accordance with your chosen routine's guidelines. I've tried most of the popular lifting apps like FitNotes and Progression and I find this has the best balance between detail and simplicity. Only problem is that the premium, no-ads version costs £7.49 which is very steep, but there is a free ad-supported base version.
I checked almost every app and looks like Personal Training Coach is the shit. It has all the right programs and you can customize everything.

I found this app to be better, it has the nsuns programs built in (you can edit/create up 3 workouts routines in the free version, to add assistance work though).
In addition it have more routines, so if you want to take a break from Nsuns, you can still track your lifts' progress
I was teasing about his newsletter, he ends every email with it. Honestly man, the workout is great starting out, but it gets hard to recover. I appreciate his tips, guides on lifts, and his knowledge of the program, but not him as a person.
I paid the subscription and then set it to cancel shortly after hearing some of his comments to people. I'm out $20, but it's sunk cost. I switched to personal training coach app (made by a redditor I believe) and I love it. Similar simple interface, with the option of changing programs or creating your own. I even ended up paying for the premium $10 one time. You should give it a shot.

I started my journey back in late 2015 at 250lbs. I dont have any pics from then, but started documenting in May of 2016 at 227lbs. Knee surgery and a herniated L5-S1 disk slowed my progress in 2017, but 2018 has been good to me going from 200lbs down to 185lbs.

I've used the Personal Trainin Coach app for a while and I really liked it. A lot of popular programs are already installed and I found it very easy to use!

I have no affiliation with this app but it's helped me a ton. Made being in the gym easier because it spells out what you need to do. I'd suggest stronglifts 5x5 starting out (because that's what I started with). If you follow the program you should see results in 3-6 months. I started where you were and got down to 200. I'm back up to 250 but that's because I've been bulking. One thing to remember it's a marathon, not a sprint. Lemme know if you have any questions.

I've been stumping for the Personal Training Coach app. It doesn't ask for M/F and holds a number of well known lifting programs, including ones found in the /r/Fitness wiki, and also the ability to customize your own. You can even customize around the same rules of those pre-built programs. I have only had to reach out to tech support once and I was very happy with their response.
Not sure if that is what you are looking for, but I am very happy with the app and will be using it for a while. Good luck on your search, I hope you can find whats right for you!

Looks good (material design wise) and it does everything I need it to.
Total Fucking Bullshit. I've moved completely to Personal Training Coach, which offers exactly the same stuff as StrongLists app, plus a ton more, in addition to actual USEFUL updates (dev is a redditor and is always listening to and implementing feedback).
Literally no reason to support this greedy dev.
If you're looking for an app for Greyskull I can recommend Personal Training Coach as my brother's been using it for Greyskull, but you can programme it for a tonne of other schemes (including Mad Cow, 5-3-1 etc.). However, I think when you finish with Stronglifts it might be worth looking at 5-3-1, as you can adapt this to a three week schedule and it works well with conditioning/cardio routines.

It has a bunch of programs built in, you just put in your maxes and it will calculate the weights. You do the exercises it says, tick each one when you're done and it times your rest too. Boostcamp is also supposed to be good but I haven't used it. Both available on IOS
Also, you should look at a few spreadsheet routines they're not hard to use and opens up a lot of options on training programs. Have a look at something like this maybe

I have tried others and seem to come back to FitBod. I create my own workouts and don't use the AI portion that much, but I like the stats it provides and the setup.

It's a bummer this app got abandoned, it's gorgeous, simple, and functional. So on Android, my app of choice after this was PTC. The developer is super responsive and it had every feature I needed. I like the app because I can pick a workout (StrongLifts 5x5, Greyskull workout, or make my own). It will auto-add weights to the next workout and auto deload after failing so many times.
I like Fitbod, and right now, I have it set for Muscle Tone and wonder how well it will work. I might go back to Bodybuilding, but I like the Strength-training one. I can't seem to make up my mind.
I use this android app and find it very good.
There's a selection of built in routines varying by number of workout days/ experience level etc. It also offer the chance to create your own workouts or customize the existing ones, tracks your increments based on different methods and allows you to export the workouts routines which you could then share with friends.

Personal Training Coach for Android.
Very flexible. Comes with many built-in routines. Highly customizable as well. The author responds to email as well. I switched to this from Stronglifts 5x5 (before it needed any kind of subscription) because PTC is more customizable.
I started 4 months ago with Phraks GSLP (but with deadlift 3x5+) which is basically the recommended routine in the /r/fitness wiki except with deadlift once a week. I enjoyed it for it's braindead simplicity and could easily use an app I found that would handle the progression for me. Was itching to go on off days so recently switched to 6 day PPL but it was an extremely good start for the first few months.
Have seen huge progress in strength, weight gain and aesthetic during this time.
Eating is personal and isn't really something someone else can prescribe for you, all the information you need is in the wiki/faq.
Are you aware of the existence of an app that I can follow while doing RPT?
I have looked and found none so far. My most favorite app is Personal Training Coach, which has multiple programs built into it, but not RPT, unfortunately. I have written to the author several months ago, recommending that he considers adding PRT. While he thanked me for the suggestion, PTC does not include RPT yet.

I'm currently doing 5/3/1 and use the above app to help with programming, tracking, and time management. It has the base 5/3/1 already programmed in and you can add other accessory movement.

It looks like an exact remake of this one., which is several years old. It's got the exact same UI, icons, and features, in the same arrangment, with a more limited range of workout options and a different color scheme.

I just got this Personal Training Coach app for Android and it has the standard GZCLP routine, but I would prefer to do the 3x5, 4x3, 5x2 version. Does anyone else have experience with this app and how it can be set up for that?

There's a ton of programs to choose from, beginner to advanced, and everything is customizable. It also logs everything really nicely. Free version is fine (just limits program customization) and I used that for many months but I just got the paid version (1 time fee) which is better for creating custom programs.
Some other features I like in the app: - rest timer - automatic deload (reducing the weight) if you fail a weight for too many weeks - bodyweight tracking - individual exercise tracking - exercise explanations with illustrated gifs
If total beginner, I'd go with a coach. pero do check the credentials, If you want to do it on your own lang, this app worked wonders

Medyo scaled sya for all levels, so programmed yung weights mo, and there are video links within the app. Got it from r/fitness and while I am not a beginner when I got it, i would say na the programs there really helped increase my numbers
1) Personal Training Coach has been my go to app for all my workouts and i'd put money on it being in at LEAST top 5 of all training apps. It formats all workouts, weight progressions, deloads, what weight to put on either side of barbell, tons of programmes including Phraks GSLP, tons of 5/3/1, SL5x5 etc., graphs all progress, 1rm calculator, timing rest sets, note taking etc... check it out if you haven't already!
2) Buying a pair of actual lockjaw collars is such a quality of life improvement over those spring collars which can tend to stick on the barbell and warp over time. enough said.
Good post. I workout in small-time gyms and used to think that trainers in costly gyms would be more educated—apparently not.
The routine I follow is Greyskull LP (Phraks variant). It's a full-body, 3-day workout routine and supposed to be for beginners that you should move away from after 6 months or so, but I have been doing it for 2 years+ because it fits into my busy schedule.
With regards to guidance, all the Youtubers mentioned here are good, but a lot of them will extend video-length for the sake of ads or clicks. On Instagram, I follow Pheasyque. His drawings are more educative than most lengthy videos.
On Android, I use the app Personal Training Coach for keeping track of my workouts and progress.
It goes in four week cycles All sets ramp up last set being heaviest
Week 1 is 3x5.
Week 2 is 3x3.
Week 3 is 1x5, 1x3, and 1x1 going for a new one rep max.
Week 4 is a 3x5 deload
I usually skip week 4 as I haven't felt the need for it yet. The lower rep weeks are easier for me to recover from so I skip deloading week will probably change once it gets crazy heavy but so far so good.

Absolutely fantastic app. Been using it for years. Don't want to be cringy and call myself a serious lifter, but I have been lifting for over a decade, been using this app almost two years and I absolutely love it.
5x5 has it's own app. you can use it free and sitll get a descent experience. or you can pay yearly subscription to get more out of it. I wouldn't overlook paying for it if you plan to do 5x5 for a while.

Another app you can use is Training Coach. yet again free or paid. I used the paid version and do not regret it all. It has lot of different routine already in it, including 5x5 (and lot of variants of it) you just need to set your weight and go. Really help me.
Try Phrak's variant of Greyskull LP. It gives you a full body workout that is super easy to follow, and if you have an Android phone, I highly recommend this app, as it has the program preloaded in it.
I recently switched to Jim Wendler's 5/3/1 Triumvirate and added FSL sets to the main lifts. I use an app called Personal Training Coach to do all the calculations for the lifts (percentage based) and keep track of workouts and progress. I lift 4 days a week and do about 45 min of stationary bike on non-lifting days. Usually the program takes about 45 min to get through, based on how I've set it up for myself.
I almost always work out after 8pm, once I've put my daughter to sleep. Sometimes during the weekend I'll do it during her daytime nap.
I have a desk job too and all of the sitting was destroying my back. After waiting for about 6 months, I finally got the standing desk I had requested, and it's great. I also have a power tower in my office, which use mostly for chin-ups, dips, and hanging leg raises. I try to do 30 min or so of walking per day on my breaks at work.
Eating habits can be difficult to change. One thing that works for me to maintain consistency is to try not to make sweeping dietary changes overnight. Easing into it and also rewarding yourself within reason help me stay on track.

I don't think I ever saw a new useful feature out of the StrongLifts all in the 2+ years I'd been using it. PTC all the way.

I use an app called Personal Training Coach and I absolutely love it for powerlifting routines. My biggest gripes is it is not compatible with Android Wear and the pro version to remove ads is $7. A bit steep, but the development of the app is solid so I will support it soon enough.

My app suggestion is to look at Personal Training Coach app if you're on Android. It's like the Stronglifts app, but you can use it for any program. Lots of preloaded or make your own.
I haven't done 5/3/1 for beginners, so it would be unfair of me to offer an opinion. I did SL for 3-4 months though and got a lot from it. I didn't start with all that empty bar shit though. I picked a weight I could do 5 reps for and went from there.
I found my squat blew up quickly but the rest of it was a bit of a grind and squatting 3 times a week really got me down by the end of it.
The best advice I think I can honestly give you is to pick a programme and run it until it stops working. SL has you deload once you stall and then just carry on at a weight you've hit previously. Frankly, once you stall just move on and don't just keep plugging away at it because you'll stall over and over again.
If you want to use an app I can recommend Personal Coach which is very similar to the SL app but has lots of other beginner programmes already installed for you to choose from.
I am using Personal Training Coach and I love it because it has all the popular programs pre-installed in it and you can even create your own version of your favourite programs with many changeable parameters like
Do note that some features are unlocked via IAP, they are listed in the play store page.
I use my own version of Greyskull LP even though there are two other variants to choose from. There's even 5/3/1 and Stronglifts. During the exercises, you can view instructions on how to do them with an animation. If some exercises (which there are many of) don't exist, you can them yourself and add your own instructions.
The downside I feel with the app is that some UI elements seem unfinished and initially it can be hard, and a few times irritating, to navigate the app. But once you get used to it, it's plug and play as far as my experience goes during the workout.
What things do you feel like Fitnotes does best and which program do you use with it and how straight forward was it to set it up? How does it compare to the features I described?
I think the best Android app out right now is Personal Training Coach. The developer added nSuns recently.
It's Android only. On the homepage, it says, "Coming Soon" for iPhone, but it's been like that for a long time.

It's like the StrongLifts app, but for any program, including nSuns. It's fantastic.

For me, the key is having a smartphone app to take the thinking part out of it. I go to the gym and lift. The record keeping and the scheduling and everything is automated. I thin the Stronglifts app is excellent. However, when I switched programs, I switched to the Personal Training Coach app, which is basically a copy of the Stronglifts app on steroids, and can be used with any program.
Even if you weren't over 40, but especially if you're 40+ with a history of injuries, make sure you're wearing a belt. The 10mm powerlifting Pioneer belts are fantastic.

The (More) Detailed Lifting Breakdown:
there's a few major groups of lifting: powerlifting (strong man competitions), bodybuilding (spray tan competitions), things like crossfit (stereotyped for awful form and flailing about), and then the venn diagram where they plug in to non-lifting fitness like cardio and diet and everything.
for the most part you don't need anything fancy, if you're selecting a gym you want a squat rack and a bench press and some dumb bells. you can safely ignore basically all of the weird contraption machines. you might want the pec deck and if you can't do one pull-up there's a machine for weighted assistance for those until you can work up to it.
this is good because the weird contraption machines are where the old people hang out doing 50 reps of 10 lbs anyway, and that's just spending time for the sake of spending time. these are your 2.5% GIC investors.
at the core, no matter what you're doing, muscle is built by doing more today than you did yesterday. "progressive overload" just means you have to keep doing more volume over time (volume is the weight x reps, so you can do higher of either for more total volume)
personally, I started off with powerlifting and then softened the definitions a bit to get into the body aesthetics side - straight up powerlifting is about numbers and strength, and that's cool, but I wanted abs and a physique that didn't make me look like a barrel with arms.
the beginners set I did (and is frequently mentioned around /r/fitness etc) is Phrak's Greyskull and it'll get you going. there's a few apps around that already support it as a workout type and set out your day A and day B accordingly. I use the most hilariously generically titled Personal Training Coach.
these programs, by themselves, aren't designed to give you the classically shredded look, they're designed to make you stronger and that's great in the beginning because we all start flabby and uncoordinated and simply moving, lifting, working on form and feeling our bodies out is a great start. they'll make you look pretty good in the first 6 months / year because any muscle looks great.
but they also encourage accessory lifts, which are other exercises outside of the core list, and this is the part I've been exploring more recently. they will tell you that you don't need dedicated ab movements because the full body aspects of squats, deadlift, etc are enough to work and build core strength and that's true to the degree with which your core is holding up and supporting everything you're doing, but it's not true for six packs in that squats (etc) basically don't activate your actual ab muscles; the goal of good lift form is to not bend your back and the whole activation of ab muscles is bending your back (think about what a sit-up is doing, it's curling the spine around)
so I'd add more dumbell stuff: lateral raises, fly / pec deck, incline press, cycling crunch, you'll get a feel for what you're not getting once you get into simply doing the core stuff.

I also had a question on warmups. While I understand how warm up should be handled with exercises involving the barbell, what about exercises involving dumbbells or other gym equipment. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd love some feedback on anything that will improve the app. I've posted on the daily thread before and have had some very nice suggestions. I am already working on more variations for 531 and would be added very soon. Also, warm up sets would be introduced as well. Let me know what you think! Any suggestions for programs I should have? I am myself very much into lifting and a lack of app for 531 and Greyskull prompted me to work on this.
