To show him some of the customization, I'd recommend downloading Nova launcher (or another launcher if you'd like) and installing a different icon pack. I think polycon is a good choice with material design influences to replace Touchwiz's icons (aka what most people think Android phones look like.) You don't even have to make it look all nice and professional. You can maybe even get a themed icon pack based on some series or video game he likes, for example. Make his phone look like it's from Evangelion, or something

Glad everyone enjoyed my last setup, so I've made a new wallpaper and changed the icon pack to freshen things up a little.
And the app drawer button is from candycons :
You can get this combination for free. Check the comment I've just posted below if you're interested.
edit: The theme I use is called Polycon. You will need a 3rd party launcher to use it, such as Nova.
Another awesome free packs, and IMO betters:
This does not have any sources as the icons are used for personal preference and not actually for the theme, the background things are all random stock images.
If sources for icons are needed than
Also holy shit my notifications lol
This isn't meant to be my permanent thing, just something I had an idea for.
That one is really nice! :D
I don't know if you ever tried it, but: Polygon is great too in that kind of style!
Good guess, it reminds me of that style a lot too! It's actually from the icon pack I'm using: Polycon. There's a few others in there of the same style. I had no idea about them when I downloaded the icons, now it's easily my favourite wallpaper!
Polycon and CandyCons
That's the icon from Polycons Icon pack
I used nova launcher and zooper widget. No wallpaper used. Just pure zooper widget I modified. Icons used are Polycon.
Credits to parth vyas. Here's the link to his setup.
I have a Nexus 5x, which was appealing to me because it comes with "stock android" - meaning no bloat apps.
I keep my installed apps to a minimum.
I use Nova Launcher, which is great for hiding stuff you don't need and arranging things in a simple, functional and aesthetically pleasing way. Like the other commenter, I really like having just a few apps on my home screen, and then having one screen of apps in the drawer.
I also use the Polycon icon pack.
To top it all off, I usually keep my phone on airplane mode and use it as little as possible. I often call and text on my computer via hangouts.google.com and project fi.
I quite like having 5 columns on the desktop and dock, with the app drawer icon in the middle.
Edit: The icons and wallpaper are from Polycon - Icon Pack (Beta). It's a beautiful and free pack, and the wallpapers are a real bonus! Only problem is there's quite a limited number of icons, so I use LollyDrop and Candy Material for the missing apps (both also free).
Edit 2: /u/___maybe___ also found the wallpaper on DeviantArt here so I'm not entirely sure who to credit. There's a couple more in the same style in Polycon, and two more different ones on that DeviantArt.
Edit 3: I contacted the DeviantArt author who confirmed it's their work. Looks the Polycon developer didn't ask permission to include it.

Someone commented with this icon pack, I fucking love it, you should try it [link]
Polycon beta - IMO, the best free icon packs with material design. There's still many icons missing, but the design is great.
Phix - one of the most complete free icon themes.
Moonshine - this one seems to be quite popular here. I use Phix and Moonshine as additional sets for icons missing in Polycon.
Switch UI - material icons with unified shapes. Made by one of the best icon designers. Worth the money.
Clock: RL Zooper collection used with Zooper Pro
Using Nova Launcher with a 9x7 grid with subgrid positioning turned on
Icons are from Polycon, Candycon and Min
Widget is from Ocea widgets for Zooper
Nova Launcher, Zooper widgets, mix of Polycon and Glyphsy icons
There are more pages, but they follow the same layout. Note the icon placement for easy right-hand-only use.

Icon pack: polycon
Everything else done in klwp.
I wound up grabbing an icon pack that's basically the stock icons (Polycon) and had to set icons back to what they already were to get rid of the white. This is fine (though annoying), but it doesn't change the icons when used elsewhere like the Share options. I can adjust a bit in Nova settings, but the best option is a square that's a bit smaller than normal, so my icons are now inconsistent sizes. All I want is to show icons like icons.
been going for a stock pixel look
I'm running LineageOS 14.1 with Nova Launcher (prime), Polycon icon pack (one of the best icon packs imo), and a wallpaper from Nougat Wallpapers
My statement beforehand was wrong as I didn't remember correctly when I wrote it. I'm sorry for that, I've changed them around quite a bit. Actually all of them (besides the Adobe ones) were originally from the "Polycon" android icon pack by Piksely.
Here are the edited ones as I used them:
Polycon - Nicer looking standard icons
Thanks! It's Polycon.
Launcher: Nova Prime
Clock: Fox for Zooper
Thanks! It's a wallpaper called 'Sun Dance'. You can find it in the Backdrops app. Polycon for the icons

Polycon. It's probably my favorite material design icon pack right now.
The icon pack is called Polycon. Its still in beta but they already have a lot of icons!
hi all! I was never into complicated customization because it would take too much time for me. it's just something I put together quickly. I changed every icon manually on the homescreen, because I'm using Polycons for the app drawer, so it was kinda big deal for me.
wallpaper: Watch Tower
music widget: one of Poweramp defaults.
clock widget: Sony stock
Wallpaper: my own photograph, here if you'd like it.
Calendar: Today Calendar.
Feel obligated to mention also that it's on a 2^nd gen Moto X, so the colors look much more vivid on the AMOLED screen, and everything is a little washed out when it gets transferred to a computer. :\

I'll one up you with a link: Polycon Icon Pack
This looks it's was made just for you
I'm using the Polycon pack available here. I really like it.
Automod removed first attempt at this for some reason, here it is again.

I use a combination of Polycon and CandyCons. I find the themes of the two are pretty interchangeable, so if I don't like the icon of one of the packs, I can switch it to the alternative found in the other pack. I also use KLWP for an animated background, which I think looks pretty neat. I actually found the base theme on Reddit and modified it to my liking. Thanks random Redditor, wherever you are!
The animations aren't as choppy as they are in the GIF, just can't find a decent screen recorder that can record animations smoothly like that.

It's Polycon ([link])
Welcome to Android! Here are some of the thing I would do to set up your phone:
Polycon! (Its awesome)
Polycon Icon Pack.
Perhaps Polycons or Silhouette?
It's a mixture of some icons but mostly Polycon
Nexus 5 5.1.1
Google App Widget
Many of these icons are folders, e.g. the gameboy in the middle is full of games, and in the bottom left are 8tracks, last.fm, spotify, soundcloud and mixcloud.
Polycon - Icon Pack (Beta)
I've added details to the comment above since a few people asked about it.
Nope, this one
Wow! I never seen that icon pack before! Looks like a more refined version Moonshine.
Here's the play store link for the lazy.
Launcher: Nova Launcher
Icon Pack: polygon
Icons : Polycon
Widget : Unity Widgets (for Zooper Widget)
Polycon. Probably one of my favorite material style icon packs.
And yes, the Galaxy Nexus is still alive somehow, haha! Some people on XDA already have a mostly working Marshmallow build already.
OP, install this
