The pattern is Dimensions 72-73987. I thought it was cuter without the backstitching so I left it like this. I wanted to try a small kit to see how I liked it before buying a bunch of supplies, which naturally I did right after I finished this one! Can't wait to start my next piece when the thread comes in.
You did a great job! Framing can be nerve-wracking, especially when you make that first cut!
One thing that really upped my stitch-framing game are these self-stick mounting boards. It keeps the fabric nice and smooth under the frame. I noticed that after some time in a frame, and sometimes right away, the aida would kinda get slouchy, so I found these that keep the fabric in place and make a huge difference. So easy to use, too!

I thought about this year ago, so I bought a 500 gram cone in 2012.
I've barely put a dent in it.
Figure I probably won't need 310 for the rest of my life, at this rate.
Not a silly question at all! Waste canvas is aida that you baste to whatever fabric you want to use, then after you finish your project you pull the individual threads away. I used this brand from Amazon:
https://amazon.com/gp/product/B003W0F2RQ
When I was pulling the thread away it tended to break a lot, but other than that it came away cleanly and I'm really pleased with the finished product
When I ordered them I didn’t notice the fabric. I just thought I was getting regular white canvas. Shoreline Converse on Amazon
I really wanted to do a Howls Moving Castle project and this was the perfect one. I found the pattern on pinterest and its stitched on 14 count aida. This was my first big project and used a pencil to grid. Unfortunately I cant get the marks out. Any suggestions?
Edit: Thank you everyone for the compliments! I honestly didnt think I would attract this much attention. The original pattern is by a shop named Stitches of Creation on etsy. I found the picture of the pattern on pintrest. Unfortunately I couldn't find the pattern on their shop so I just tried to replicate it as best as possible. If someone can find it please let me know! I'll love to actually buy the pattern like I was planning to from the beginning.
Edit2: thank you user technicolornurd for the link to the creators page! https://gumroad.com/stitchesofcreation
u/lightshadow24 is right the wooden chips are wooden laser cut needle minders.
The green flower shaped rubber piece is a Disc Needle Puller. Sometimes when anchoring my tail I can have some trouble getting a good grip on the needle to pull it all the way through. It is also helpful when stitching on thicker materials. I used it a lot when cross stitching onto a denim jacket.
They're stitched on 28 count. I use a cover button like in this link (though the snap together doesn't work well with the fabric thickness so I just added a mass of glue. I believe the ones I used were 5/8" diameter, but I'd have to verify when I get home.

I ended up loving working with the woolen/acrylic thread. My only complaint was that the instructions for the beading was minimal. Didn't say what color thread to use. I ended up stitching the whole thing and then added the beading on top which was a little tough in one section. Couldn't do it any other way as the bead placement pattern was on it's own separate page.
Now to take it somewhere to get it framed.
Hi, thanks for posting this, its very cool! Kudos and big high fives to your mom!
In future if you have something to show us that you did not complete, go ahead and use the PIC tag instead of FO, so we know not to ask for a source. :) Rock on!
Here is the kit.
i like a lot of old/antique/primitive patterns but big samplers and ornate works aren't really my style so i like to pull smaller motifs and stitch them by themselves; i feel like it gives them a fresh, modern twist that fits my aesthetic. i've done a number of them but these are the first to be ironed and framed. eventually i plan to hang them along with some other very simple works as a gallery wall.
the small bird i found as a chart on pinterest. the other two came from books of charted designs i found on amazon; either this one or that one:)
all are stitched on 28 count linen with 2 strands of floss.

For anyone wondering, the lightpad I have is this one. It's pretty inexpensive and I bought it a few years ago for tracing sketches onto watercolor paper. I'm afraid I don't know of non-amazon options, for those who prefer not to shop there.
Also, my needle minder is this one from Grandma Girl Designs on Etsy. The magnet is strong enough and there's enough room between fabric and minder that I can tuck my little scissors there when I'm pausing on the project so that my cat doesn't escape with them.
I've always loved this picture book for children! 'Classic Storybook Cross Stitch' by Gillian Souter has a few lovely charts for the nutbrown hare characters including a large picture of big nutbrown hare holding little nutbrown hare, four little pictures and another large chart for the picture the OP stitched. This is u/wildviolet's design and I stitched it on 18 count lite oatmeal Aida. I was hoping the white would show up better, but it shows well enough.
I found a frame I liked at Joann's but I didn't really like the color but since it was natural wood I stained it to a color I do like. After it was stained my daughter found a screen shot of the carving in the closet and drew it on the frame to match. I carved it and then when that was done I put a coat of wax on the wood to give it a nice satin look. I didn't put the glass in the frame because didn't like the slight glare and, honestly, I really like the look of the stitching. I don't smoke and it's not in the kitchen so it should be fine.
It was a lot of work to frame it, especially sewing/lacing up the back, but when it's all said and done it was very much worth it.
Found a source of it thanks to Google Image Search. From a 1965 book Cross Stitch Embroidery II Korsstingsarbejder.
I'm assuming Amazon links are good in this sub. It's on the cover but in a different color.

Been a while since I had time to stitch someone else's design, and this has been on my to-do list for aaaaages.
I swapped out the white in the cloud for Kreinik Glow in the Dark 052F Grapefruit #4. I personally find it easier to work with than the DMC glow, but y'know. personal preference.
The blacklight is across town at the boyfriend's, so no good photo of the glowing unfortunately. :(
Pattern designed with DMC Stitch a Photo https://www.amazon.co.uk/DMC-Stitch-a-Photo/dp/B003CDZNFY This took me the best part of 10 months. My first large project and I learnt a lot. A lot of things I’d do differently now, but overall I’m happy!
Pattern by u/wildvi0let found here. This pattern was so cute! I couldn't put it down! This is the first time I hand dyed my own aida and I think it fits the pattern well! I also used glow in the dark floss for the web to enhance the spooky effect. 🕷️🕸️

I got this for my birthday from my partner, I can't wait to start it. I've done a lot of samplers and modern patterns so I'm excited to try a big scene like this!
Not an expert by any means, but sharing what works well for me. I soak the finished project in warm water with some OxiClean , agitate softly so get any dirt and oils off, and let sit for 15-20 mins. Dump soapy water and rinse under running cool water until it runs clear. Set flat between two dry towels and roll up, squeeze to remove excess water. Unroll and let air dry most of the way. Once merely damp, use flat iron to finish drying and flatten for framing - I iron the stitched part on the back of the piece not the front as not to flatten the stitches too much. I also iron on top of a dry towel not a counter so as to minimize flat stitches. Good luck ☺️
Her stuff appears to be exclusivly on russian sites which makes it hard to google because of the difference in alphabets. And she changed her shop name and link since I bought the chart and that didn't help either, but I have found her again! https://vk.com/miastitch
Can no longer find the pattern that I got this from, but here’s a link to the series on amazon
DOMEI Stamped Cross Stitch Kit, Bamboo with Two Birds, 11.4 x 32.3 inches https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OPQFE0Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_crIQBb20Z891C
light underneath, something wide like this. This is just the first one I found in a quick and dirty search, you can probably find cheaper. Other people have had success with a white towel in their lap with good lighting from above the work. Try the towel first of course, it's the cheapest. :)
Awww. My old lady gets around much better with her meds, too.
I also bought her these foam steps on Amazon. They are foam, so soft on kitty feet and gentle on humans who might kick or run into them, have a removeable, washable cover, and come in a lot of different colors/designs. We have the bigger 4 step set in our bedroom so she can get on the bed, too.
Here's the book I was given, and I definitely recommend it. I get lots of ideas for fast, simple projects just browsing through it!
Be careful about the scissors, the TSA is very inconsistent in my experience about that. I've seen some let them through and also had to throw some away. I bought a circular thread cutter after this happened. We fly frequently.
There is a mini version for this situation exactly! Both are beautiful, but the mini is more accessible for sure :)
I would recommend using an antique or oatmeal Aida so the white pops like it does in the pattern-maker’s sample!
The source is Fables and Fairy Tales by Veronique Enginger- link. Let me just say right now if you think you are remotely interested in her designs, just get it, the book is amazing!
First time really working on linen, so that was fun. Also, people keep asking me who I made it for, and I keep saying "I don't know yet," but if I may be honest to you /r/CrossStitch people I just have grand cross stitch designs for a baby nursery if we are going to have one in the next few years that require starting now... which seems perfectly reasonable to me but people IRL get weird if you tell them that. :)
Actually I used a water soluble grid! There's a DMC one that's not too expensive and feels almost like soft plastic. For this project I put the fabric and a layer of interfacing a bit larger than the size of the design (behind the fabric and pinned onto it) in the hoop, then pinned the DMC soluble grid on top. Don't put the edges of the soluble grid into the hoop because the plastic doesn't fold well. I stitched like normal through the grid, fabric, and interfacing, essentially stitching them together.
After it was done, I soaked the whole thing for about 10 min and rinsed it off with hot water to make sure all the plastic came off (it feels kind of slippery, like jello, so you'll know if there still some left to be rinsed). After it dried I stitched one final layer of interfacing a bit larger than the first one onto the back to hide all the stitches and ONLY stitched it onto the other interface layer (this is why I left the edges of the first layer slightly larger than the design, and it prevents the stitches from showing up on the front of the design).
Please feel free to ask me any more questions! This was so much fun and I can't wait to stitch onto a ton of other things now!

I'm here to share, and also maybe check for errors.
I've been trying to find a good dmc database for a while, and none have been quite right. The last one I used had no way to transfer info onto a different brand phone, and I've never felt more defeated.
I found airbase on the fountain pen community, and after creating a pen data base I started building one for thread. It's on the cloud and you can access it on phone or computer, and you can share your thread list with friends. You can copy my data base, then add/change/remove records, columns, and tables as you please. I'm in love with this.
A note: There are a few hidden columns, "colour order" being one. This is so you can go back to a perfect rainbow-sorted-grid if you need to sort by a different field. So maybe don't delete that. Ctrl+F to find a dmc number. I also added a "sample projects" tab, as an example of linked records. I'm going to keep track of my projects that way too. The two patterns there are ones I made myself screwing around photoshop, feel free to use/share them.
So ya. I hope someone finds this useful.
Not OP but I’m pretty new so I’ve been trying EVERYTHING and the solution I will now swear by actually came from my grandma. Heat pens. You have to iron your work anyway but when you use the heat pens all lines, marks, numbers, etc. Magically disappear and it is sooo satisfying. Best part, the one I got from Amazon send you three pen cases and a bunch of refills in red, black, blue and a couple white. Only bad thing is that I kinda wish the pen tips could be traded or interchangeable with smaller tips.
Edit: to add a link for heat erasable pens for anyone who wants these magic pens.
Oh and it totally worked with my sisters hair straightener when I couldn’t find an iron!
This is a combo of two things, a headlamp and a pair of magnifying "glasses." I forget where I got the headlamp
I used a water-soluble waste canvas. (This one on Amazon.) I pinned it to the sweatshirt, then used those guideholes to stitch the kitties. After I was done with all the stitching, I just soaked them in warm water and the "plastic" canvas dissolved. It was super easy and the only thing I didn't love about it was that I could only find it in 14 count, no smaller.
It is a 14 count soluble canvas that my local store recommended me. I found a similar one on amazon so you can check it out. It feels like plastic, but dissolved in hot water.
I just loosely tacked it on where I wanted it and started from the middle.
I leave the floss in skeins with the labels left on and just put them in baggies similar to these ones. Each color is in it's own baggie and the baggies I use are small enough that the skeins don't have room to move around so I don't have to worry about them tangling. Leaving the label on the skein also helps to minimize the tangling. If the label does fall off it's either a) already in the bag or b) I actively have the skein in my hand and can easily put the labels in the bag. Because the label is in the bag I don't have to worry about something being labeled wrong or loosing the important label info including dye lot.
The baggies do take more space than bobbins (although the number of bobbin boxes I would need would take up almost as much space as the totes I have the floss in) and it doesn't look as pretty but it's also a lot easier to deal with and doesn't take nearly as much time as winding the skeins onto bobbins or whatever. I also don't have to worry about the bobbins being wound too tight and kinking/creasing the floss.
It is this simple little lap stand from Amazon. I love how quick it is to take apart for packing into my carry-on for retreats!
Thank you! The bottom two pictures probably took me only 4-5 hours, and filling in the scales with the fan pattern was also very quick. Then I probably spent 20 hours doing the cross hatching and fine lines, just to make sure everything stayed as close to geometric as possible. I think the bubbles took me maybe 4-5 hours also.
So around 30 hours!
Also this is the fabric I used, which I also blame for this taking me so long. It's 2 stitches across, 3 down to make a square, not 2x2, so getting things to be right angles and such took a lot of careful and precise stitching, and tons of double checking everything. It also took forever to mark up my fabric, and I had to start over (which you can kind of tell at the bottom of some of the pictures).
Kit available here: https://www.amazon.com/Dimensions-Indian-Peacock-Counted-70-35293/dp/B009MHIM8Y
Took me about 6 months and it was my first project of this size. I mounted it on foam core though I might eventually frame it.
I learned a lot whole working on this guy and it was cool to see him come together.
You don't need the fancy fishing line (note colors do not make the line fancy, weight and intended catch/usage do). You are looking for a general purpose fishing line in a low test weight. You are not looking for a line that is geared to a specific fishing style (fly vs deep-sea vs ice etc,) or marketed as being best for a specific type of fish. The cheapest option you can find in a color that will contrast with most fabrics will usually work. Looking at the spool of fishing line I use for gridding it is an 8lb test weight in red. Specifically I have this fishing line in the 8lb 300yd spool. Grabbing a piece and testing it on a random piece of 18 count fabric there weren't any issues getting it through the holes in the fabric. I have used this same line to grid a 25 count fabric and a 28 count without any issues getting the line through the holes or the fabric being distorted due to the line being too thick. The 8lb line is just a bit thinner than two strands of regular cotton floss. For higher count fabric you may want to go down to a 4 or 6 weight or even 1 or 2 weight if you can find them. The red color doesn't show up too well against black or other very dark fabrics although it is still somewhat visible. One of the hi-vis or fluorescent fishing lines would probably work better for dark fabrics.
Do you have a sporting goods store near you like Sports Authority or Bass Pro Shop or even an independent sporting goods store? Or do any of your regular stores like Walmart or Kmart have a sporting goods section? If so you may find something that works in store.

Thank you. It does suck. I did have a lot of time to come to terms with the fact that his time was limited though, which I’ve gone back and forth on as looking at as a gift. In some ways it’s better than having them taken unexpectedly, but both are still awful.

Got this piece off a Chinese website (taobao) but after a quick search, Amazon also has it (just at a steeper price!). This is my first project that I started 2 years ago. After finishing 30-40%, I felt like this is an impossible task so I stopped for almost a year. When I picked it up again, I was more determined and needless to say, I'm quite proud of the work!
So Russia took me I think 10 x 2h evenings with TV! It felt like forever when so many other countries are quick wins. I thiiiink I've done an ok job with the Indonesian Islands but they are just so complex to cover on such a huge canvas like this. Hoping I haven't missed any small island countries and that I won't miss any in Oceania...
If you see anything weird/missing, please let me know! I want a complete, good lookin map!

I have one of these that I use. I also have three cats, so it helps that they run away from the area when I start swinging it around wildly near the floor 😂
You could also print them out and use one of those xyron sticker makers. You run the printout of your symbols through and it makes them into stickers you can apply to your bobbins. Same concept pretty much, just an easy machine to do it for you. It’s popular for kitting up for diamond paintings.
Ooh that’s a good question! Tbh I’m not totally sure as it’s my first time using it, but I’ve read a lot of posts from people on this sub who use it and it worked well for me! I followed this tutorial and used the same product as she did, which I found here on Amazon. It does say acid-free and that it’s meant for cross stitch, so I’m assuming it’s good to go!
I just went to Amazon and searched for "ball point hand needles" and got a bunch of hits. Dritz makes them as does John James. https://www.amazon.com/Dritz-Ball-Point-Sewing-Needles/dp/B002EZVY9A/ref=sr_1_5?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1492876182&sr=1-5&keywords=ballpoint+needle
This is a pattern I made myself and started last August, of a nebula with a Carl Sagan Cosmos quote over it. I've finally finished everything, including the metallic thread and beading! I'm really happy with the way it came out, but I'm not a great photographer.
I have the pattern up for sale on my etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/174587498/we-are-made-of-star-stuff-carl-sagan, coupon code REDDIT for $1 off.
I used DMC Stitch a Photo. You buy the pack from Amazon for about £15. Send them the pic and they post out a pattern. I can't find a non U.K link, but I guess it's stocked in the U.S somewhere
The kit is Firefox by Moohue. Ordered from China off of Amazon (US).
The final verdict: One of the best patterns I've ever done. I used 14-count oatmeal cotton fabric instead of the vinyl Aida that came with the kit. I wound up running out of 8 or 9 colors by the time I was done, but the chart was all in DMC so no biggie. I initially did the gold curlicues between the feathers as regular backstitching, but I didn't like how it looked so I frogged and re-did it as couching. A world of difference.
I haven't decided how to mat/frame it yet.

I wanted a magnifying lens for a new linen project that made me question my “nearly perfect” vision (thanks, lasik). Went searching for a mounted lens, which led to lighted lenses and, eventually with a (mostly joking) comment from my husband, I ended up searching for some headgear. Best. Purchase. Ever.
The good: $13 with interchangeable magnifying lenses, LED light with adjustable angles, and the option to wear as glasses or as a headband. The lenses clip in and out easily (and come in a snazzy case) and the light is powered by three AAA batteries. The lens sits far enough from your face that you can see around it when pulling new floss or fussing with something else outside of your work. I haven’t used the glasses option, since I’m usually looking down, but switching between glasses and headband is also just a quick click feature.
The bad: The nose piece, which could be slightly more comfortable, leaves tiny indents on my face after long uses.
The ugly: Just imagine yourself rocking that wonderful piece of equipment....you get the picture.
Star rating out of five: 5 stars for sure, can’t beat the price and I’m now a full-fledged nighttime linen-stitching ninja. Highly recommended! Happy stitching!
I had the hardest time finding an Android app that I liked, but I found Cross Stitch Thread Organizer and it's perfect. You don't have to manually input every color like the one I was using haha. It's $1.46 (In Canadian, probably less in USD.) but it's well worth it.
On the contrary, it looks like both theworldinstitches and littlepolishneedle produced similar patterns from this stock image: Shutterstock
Ok, so that's called 'Shopping' by Ekaterina Gafenko. You would have to PM her on vk.com and she would give instructions for payment. It sounds like a pain, but I have done it several times for other Russian artists, it's actually very easy :)
Register for vk.com, then go to her personal page and click Write a Message - https://vk.com/id50852546 Then ask if you can buy the PDF for this one https://vk.com/photo-71632161_341212448
There's no guarantee she'll speak English, so I usually send all messages through Google Translate first.
Patterns are usually very cheap, it looks like this one would be about $7 plus a few cents for PP fees.
I use that frame, and have purchased longer rods from Michael’s to use for larger projects. It allows you to turn the project over.
Set small goals instead of just one big final goal. Mini goals will feel better and are more easily reachable. Examples:
I’ll stitch 2 full squares tonight.
I’ll stitch 30 minutes (set a timer or put on a 30 minute podcast or show)
I’ll load 15 needles and complete those
I strongly recommend this item. If you have Pets you can store it in a cheap plastic pencil case: I load lots of needles with conditioned thread ready to stitch.

I love Amazon for craft kits and just randomly found this one. It’s so lovely!
To the Future, or "Champagne Lady" as designed by Barbara Hammet in her 1999 book Art Nouveau Cross Stitch. Stitched on 14 count aida using two full skeins of black and a whole bunch of Kreinik metallic thread. Watercolor paint was used after stitching to add just a bit of color, drawing (loosely) from Alphonse Mucha's original print. The cording around the edge of the banner was hand-made from another full skein of black, and the tassel was also hand-made using a full skein of DMC metallic pearl cotton. From beginning to end, the project took exactly 6 weeks to complete.
The moment I saw this project in the book on Amazon, I knew I HAD to make it. I've loved Art Nouveau and Mucha for quite some time, and I had been wanting to so something blackwork-ish for a while, so this was perfect. It was fun to work on, and went fairly quickly (for a project of its size, anyway), with only a few stitching and miscounting mistakes on my part. I wish my photos captured how sparkly the gold is - it's really lovely in person!
After I finished it, I thought it needed a bit of color, and decided to use watercolors to paint part of it - and almost ruined the whole darn thing! I'm not sure if I'll try that again. Then I used the right product in the wrong way for interfacing, nearly melting the whole project to the ironing board. It's like I was determined to ruin it after all of that work! But in the end, I think it turned out great, and I'm so happy. It's not often that the FO turns out exactly like I pictured it!
I bought this cable case off Amazon and use it to carry around all my supplies. It’s small enough to be able to stash almost anywhere, but has so many pockets and compartments that I can stay organized. And it’s super cheap!
Pattern is Colorful Deer on Amazon. Overall a decent pattern (and the kit came with everything!) but I felt like a lot of the detail was lost so I ended up adding some backstitching and French knots myself. It’s my first time cross stitching since I was a kid and I fell back in love with it!
I got them on Amazon! I don’t think these cases were meant for cross stitch, but I was able to glue this piece into the center part with some backing, and it turned out great.
I got mine on Amazon. The product description picture looks slightly different, but what arrived was exactly what OP posted.

I LOVE Thread Organizer!
I used quite a lot other stuff before (Excel, Access, Google Docs and other apps), but this one has everything I've ever wanted out of such an app: Thread-, fabric and project management, color matching, a shopping cart, fabric calculator, ... I haven't counted, but there must be at least 20 or so vendors supported at the moment. Once I've sent the developer a mail that I was missing a few lists and the developer updated the app on the same day. 11/10 would recommend.
I stitched u/wildvi0let's version of the iconic tapestry. Her pattern is here. I meant this as a gift for a friend, but now that it's finished, I'm not so sure. 😂
Hi, we have a list of designers who will do custom work in the Continuous Craft fair here. You should be able to find someone to work with you on this and maybe even point you to a designer who has a pattern like this ready! :)
Pattern here: https://gumroad.com/l/pumpkin-spice-latte Thanks so much for making this, u/wildvi0let!
Edit: I forgot to mention, I made a few alterations. I didn't have some thread colors so I improvised, and did half stitches for the liquids instead of full stitches. :)
This is the post where I got it from https://www.reddit.com/r/CrossStitch/comments/ac8ljl/fo_xpost_from_rdundermifflin_i_finally_get_to/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf and this is the link to the actual pattern https://www.docdroid.net/LMUvtwz/jim-and-pam-pattern-pdf :)
hm. were it me, I'd try to find another simpsons pattern anywhere that does list colors then sort of go from there... or maybe you can contact the author? barring that, I'd just wing it and get as close as possible. I found the official Simpsons Yellow in hexidecimal/rgb that you can probably then use to find a similar thread color?
Oh I hear you. I’m working on a fairly simple 6x8 mandalorian piece right now, but I messed up my gridding and didn’t realized until I was past the point where frogging made sense. So here we are.
Also, I clip this light on my lap frame and it’s made a huge difference:

They start out very faint but get really prominent when it dries. Just got them today, but I’m really happy with the results.
I already tried getting it out with heat and it works like a Charme.
This is actually a copy from Dimensions. Here's the actual/official Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Dimensions-Collection-Counted-Stitch-Japanese/dp/B00KHUL87C.
I've done one of their Gold pieces before and you'll lose out on a lot of details (half stitches, mixed color threads, french knots, backstiches, etc) with this copied one. I bought a similar one from Aliexpress for the same Dimensions project that I'm just going to end up donating to someone else.
Tea dyed this piece after stitching it!
I sprayed tea on it and left tea bags sitting on the fabric for an hour. I love how it turned out 🖤
This is my first "real" project - I had completed something tiny to learn the basics and then dove head first into this, totally unaware of what I was getting myself into. It took me ages and I had long bouts of wavering motivation, but I did it :) Now onto MUCH SMALLER projects so I can get some more FOs under my belt!
I can safely say that I learned a LOT about stitch consistency throughout this (and it shows a bit...)
My friend and I are huge fans of the My Favorite Murder podcast, so I just had to make this for her birthday. Still need to wash and frame it. Pattern by Wild Violet I made one edit and outlined the nameplate so it stood out a bit more.

Finally getting around to sharing this! Its hanging on our door so I get to see it every time I leave the apartment.
Thanks to u/dnana1, a few months ago I became obsessed with the podcast My Favorite Murder. I love how the two of them say “OK, Byee” and realized I was always saying it to my SO. Of course once something has taken over your life, you have to stitch it. 🤓
If you backstitch over the floss grid, you will absolutely never be able to remove the grid. I'd be very careful stitching regular stitches over it, too, as it's very easy to pierce it and then you'll never get it out.
For gridding, I always dot out a grid using washable blue embroidery marker. It looks like this and rinses out really easily. I prefer the blue pen over the purple variety that can also be found, because the purple isn't washable, it's supposed to fade with time, but all it does is turn yellow.
I use a Snag Nab It by Dritz (here's one on Amazon). It's longer than a needle so it's easier to hold and it has a sharp point which makes it easier to grab the threads you need to pull. Bonus: It's also useful for it's actual purpose of pulling random fibers to the back of the fabric. This is my most useful cross stitch accessory.
When you start your stitch, hold the thread so that you stitch it into place on the back. It will look like this.
|--|--|--|--|--|--|-
The |'s are what happens on the back when you make the X, the --'s are the end of the thread. Cut as needed.
When you finish a line you can sew it into the | | | | | that's been made, or you can hold it along with the new end piece and repeat what was done above.
When I have long lines from skipping several places, I also pay attention to what my back stitching is doing, so that I can stitch over them and hold them into place. Thread going through thread is what always made my backsides messy.
Also I HIGHLY recommend ditching the round aida holders, whatever the f they're called. I bought one of these recently and it's been a game changer. My hands don't hurt and it is way easier to manage the backside while stitching since I have something better to hold onto and can flip back and forth. I also got this, which helps me actually see better while I'm doing all of this.
Let me know if any of this didn't make sense, I'm happy to clarify.
Not OP but I have a daylight lamp that has really white light and you can adjust the brightness. It's often marketed as a sewing lamp. I also use it for jigsaw puzzles and well, just about any hobby project where I need to see what I'm doing.
edit: I think I have this one. One of the best gifts I ever got :)
One good way to finish edges is to first zigzag stitch and trim it just like you did, then fold ribbon or binding tape over the edge and sew it down. Pretty much like this, just picture aida instead of the quilting fabrics they're using in these instructions. Stuff like this in the 3/8 inch size would work really well I think.
I fell in love with this kit when I first saw it 2 years ago, and finally started on it around March last year. I had a 4 hour daily commute then, and it was a good way to kill time on the train. After I switched jobs, I'd only pick this up occasionally at nights and on weekends.
For the longest time, I thought I'd abandon this project, but I'm glad my stubbornness forced me to complete it. It was definitely a challenging one - my first time working with 28 count linen, petite stitches and too many French knots. Apart from miscounting and not leaving enough room on top, this actually turned out pretty wonderful.
The final piece measures around 14"x20" :)

My nan recently passed away and she LOVED robins, they were definitely her thing. I thought my mom would like this as a perfect reminder that she will always be with us. Hopefully she loves it, can't wait to give it to her for Christmas!
