that system is now gone.
if there are commercial activities on beaches/in city parks, report it because it's likely unauthorized.
As soon as I read this, I knew this guy was one either a) one of the local "sovereign citizen" drones or b) one of our "you can't tell me what to do when its inconvenient to me, I'm free" MAGA asshats that we seem to be getting more and more of in this state recently.
And drumroll: https://nextdoor.com/events/hi/kailua/red-wave-regatta-on-kaneohe-bay-to-keep-america-great-3756547
But I bet she will sell a ton of books. That's what the lower tier candidates are doing. Like Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina and John Kasich and Mike Huckabee were doing in the 2016 Republican primaries. It was to sell books and get a job in the new administration. Ben Carson got hired at Housing and Urban Development even though he was a Neurosurgeon and Mike Huckabee got his daughter a job as Press secretary although she wasn't qualified to run a Cable Access talk show.
Tulsi is here to get name recognition, get campaign contributions to use both for her National Presidential run and also money for her Rep. Hawaii seat (and maybe get more money for her "daddy's" campaign war chest), and she has her book coming out in April https://www.amazon.com/Today-Day-Another-Political-Memoir/dp/1455542318
Just like Kamala Harris who announced on Colbert that she was running for President. Kamala released a Biography and a children's book.
Come April, Tulsi will be shilling her book non-stop and will be signing copies at the Ala Moana Barnes and Noble and at the Hawaii Book Fair in May. Unless she gets too busy doing her job as a Representative, but you know making money comes first, the people come second.
P.S. Please don't buy her book now, wait til 2020 after she loses and then you can find them in the bargin bin at Wal-Mart or at the Aloha Swap meet. Her book is currently $27 Dollars. The same amount Bernie Sanders asked his supporters to donate to his Presidential campaign. Tulsi might try to be a younger, less white version of Bernie Sanders. Meanwhile both Kamala Harris and Julian Castro's books are only 18 dollars. Tulsi thinks her story is worth 50% more??????
She should have waited until her book was available. Now her book won't sell when it releases her book April 25th https://www.amazon.com/Today-Day-Another-Political-Memoir/dp/1455542318
P.S. Please don't buy her book now, wait til 2020 after she loses and then you can find them in the bargin bin at Wal-Mart or at the Aloha Swap meet.
Carry some of these in your car. Little book of cards that tell people how shitty they park. $6 for 50, and always good fun to put on peoples cars.
When I go to Sam's Club, I use the Scan and Go app to totally bypass the cash register. While the line to get out of the door is usually longer at Sam's Club, not having to wait for the cashier more than makes up for it.
Edit: here are links to the Scan and Go apps: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsclub.sng and https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sams-club-scan-go/id1046684325?mt=8. Aside from wanting to make sure Sam's Club employees keep their jobs, I'm not sure why people don't use the app.
Filipinos in Hawai‘i had different struggles going on at the time, thus shaping their narrative and understanding of Filipino influence in American history.
That aside, I recommend this book to get acquainted with Filipino history in America: Filipinos: Forgotten Asian Americans https://www.amazon.com/dp/0840328974/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0SUbCbDJEVBMJ
That recipe looks good and authentic, but if the finished product tastes a little on the bland side, you can try this recipe, which is basically the same, but adds furikake.
Furikake turbo charged my musubi, and I've found myself putting it on all sorts of shit.
I pulled the cord 3 times, guess it was broken. I have an extra minute of nothing while I was waiting for it to say stop requested but I trimmed it for you. I can do another video tomorrow night if you'd like.
edit - not even a consolation thanks. Why did I even bother. I did something to help you and you wouldn't even take half a second out of your day to type thanks. Dick.
Kill it. It eats cardboard and paper and will seriously mess up your books and photos. They are especially fond of cardboard album sleeves and labels for some reason. Destroyed my LP collection.
I keep boric acid tablets anywhere that I have paper or cardboard, and they do the trick with keeping these things at bay. I linked to the ones I use; I get them at Ace Hardware.
I suggest you ~~read~~check out the last Constitution of the Kingdom: https://www.hawaiiankingdom.org/constitution.shtml
Then think about the way a monarchy works, at least in the form of the Kingdom. The Monarch was above the law, codified in the above Constitution. A Monarch could only be someone of Ali'i decent, which is comparable to the US Constitution saying if you were descended from a large Plantation owner with slaves, then you could run to be President. Then read a good book on the history of the Kingdom, I recommend Captive Paradise.
What you'll find is the Kingdom wasn't so great. It wasn't terrible and it had many external influences it couldn't control, but in the end it was still a full fledged monarchy based on a class structure from when Hawaii was a terrible place for the common man. By the time it failed, the Kingdom was on a steep decline due to years of mismanagement, much of that mismanagement because it didn't have a proper system of checks and balances. Having a democratic government isn't just about fairness, it also helps to have controls that prevent bad decisions.
This idea that a government is something you get to keep forever that shouldn't fall is wrong. The purpose of a government is to serve the people; it's a series of legal mechanisms to make everyone's life easier. It's reasonable to talk about the questionable nature of the annexation and how it went down, but right now, most of Hawaii's inhabitants want the US, and to force, what, 95% of the residents to change their government against their will is downright wrong. It doesn't matter what happened in the past. And assuming the reinvigorated Kingdom is in any way democratic, then the 95% would just take it over again. You just can't reverse stuff, even past wrongs, if the people, who are the essence of a government, don't want it.
If I had a kid growing up here now I'd make sure they got a chance to either be immersed or otherwise learn Hawaiian beyond the paltry words I learned growing up.
Heck, it'd be a blast to read Ka Hopita (The Hobbit).
> I loko o kekahi lua ma ka honua kahi i noho ai kekahi hopita. 'A'ole ia he lua i ho'opailua a lepo a pulu a piha i nā pāpākole o nā ko'e a me ke ea 'i'ī, a 'a'ole ho'i he lua malo'o i piha i ke one a nele i ka noho a me ka 'ai: he lua hopita ia, a no laila, he 'olu'olu nō.
> Ka Hopita, J.R.R Tolkien, translated by Dr Keao NeSmith
I hope the Hawaiian language continues to grow in prominence into becoming more of the island's living language again.
EDIT: Ka Hopita is for sale on Amazon here, and has the old school Hobbit cover.
darksky.net does pretty well for predicting rain patterns for the next few hours, which can be handy if you are stuck inside but if you have lived here long enough you can get a better sense just by looking at the sky.

Sadly, the jokes on me. I eat there a lot. Except on Sundays after the Sunday Morning Coffee Jam when we eat at the Kapolei location.
Have you tried: AirBNB
Yes, it is, although, it's ~6 miles and will take you some time.
Ninja edit - the first part along Nimitz is fairly pleasant, and mostly shaded. After that, you're in the sun the rest of the way. Continuing along Nimitz will put you close to the water (as opposed to walking down, say Dillingham). Once you cut off Nimitz to King street you're in downtown Honolulu, with shade from the buildings, but the heat of downtown.
Hope that helps.
>Both of us have great resumes. She was an Assistant General Manager at a Marriott property for 2.5 years, and has a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. I'm a licensed high school teacher with three years experience, and graduated with a degree in Communications Arts and Literature. I've also worked for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines for the past five summers as a Tour Director.
1) your friend should have stayed with Marriot and did a transfer. probably would have made it easier to land a job there.
2) Try applying with the State of Hawaii for a teachers position on line. They are always looking for qualified teachers here, so you are more likely to land a job. Even in mid-year. You should also search the local papers in Hawaii as private schools do hire qualified teachers.
Here is a website for you (http://doe.k12.hi.us/personnel/index.htm)
For both of you to job search
Housing I have no room, but you can search craigslist or the local papers for somethign of a hostel. Good luck but try to have an open ended ticket just in case it doesn't work.
I got these
It's still annoying, but at least it protects the cards without having to permanently laminate them.
I love Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell. It's light but delightful and a very easy read.
I'm down for that, too, and have spoken about it on this sub in the past.
It's a multi-faceted problem.
As for the dogs whose owners don't pick up their shit - I think this should all apply to them as well. It pisses me off when people don't pick up after their dogs or they'll pick it up and just drop the bag right back on the ground/in a bush. There are already so few beaches/parks where dogs are allowed and this kind of behavior does us no favors.
Dog bags are cheap - you can get 900 great quality bags for $15 on amazon. There's absolutely no excuse to not pick up after your dog.
Also, I don't hate people who feed these feral animals. But to claim they have compassion for them is disingenuous due to the serious medical issues many of them face which go ignored/untreated by those feeding them.
Modern culture?
There’s “Hell Bent”: https://www.amazon.com/Hell-Bent-Mans-Crusade-Crush-Hawaiian/dp/0762793031/ref=nodl_
It’s actually a very accurate recounting and a good read. Unfortunately, it is NOT about the happy stuff that Hawaii is known for.
GIS guy here - I can spit it out in just about any format if you need it. Give me a bit and I'll post something up.

> These are expensive homes that poor locals cannot afford anyway so whether they are occupied by the owner or a renter makes no difference to local housing.
This is incorrect as there are many "normal" houses and apartments that are being used exclusively for Airbnb. I would say the normal everyday residences outnumber the luxury ones as well if you just take a gander at these listings which are for entire homes and apartments in Honolulu. The majority of them are not luxurious by any standards but all have a good number of reviews and are obviously being used as vacation rentals and not regular housing.
>And those renting those homes are spending large amounts directly at local businesses where the local home owner will spend far less as they tend not to do all the tourist activities nor eat out as often.
I don't see why this should be taken into consideration in regards to housing. Should locals not have access to housing because they don't eat out or go on tours as much as visitors do?
On a side note, as someone who has worked in Hawaii tourism for 15 years now, one of the main reasons why locals don't do tours is the cost and if tour companies can afford to give commissions of 20%, 30% or more to third party activity companies (Viator, Concierge Desks, etc.) then they should offer something more than the usual 10% discount to locals.
Holiday Season is the worst time of the year to find a place now. Most vacation rentals are usually booked.
You can check Trip Advisor
(http://www.tripadvisor.com/VacationRentals-g29222-Reviews-Oahu_Hawaii-Vacation_Rentals.html)
If you came across a small room for less than $120 a night during the holidays. You are better off staying away.
I've been in a similar situation. As far as showing you have ties there isn't much else you can do on a resume beyond a local phone number and address. I think you can get an 808 number in Google Voice that ties to your current line (I have one out of state tied back to my 808): https://voice.google.com/about
I know other people will caution you against using a local address that isn't yours, but if you can be notified by family when something arrives you'd be good; alternatively, you can open a mailbox at a UPS store remotely (again, I've done this on the mainland coming from Hawai'i). Remember, you're not likely to receive any mail until you're hired. Just be ready to hop on an expensive flight on short notice if they want an interview.
With both of these I'd say the important thing is to not lie when asked by a potential employer. Of course, if they're asking then you have a chance to explain your ties in person.
Like a stand alone one? I happen to have one I've been trying to get rid of.
This is the one I have: Amazon Link
It is missing a single washer. It was missing that washer when I got it originally. Still works fine. I don't use it and I took it apart to save space, but still got all the pieces (aside from that 1 washer). And the instruction manual in pdf form somewhere I could print out for you.
You can have it for $50. I live in Waipahu.
edit: Proof
edit2: Whoops wrong piece of equipment. Apologies. Good luck on your search and I'll leave this up for anyone else who might be interested.
The NASA app has options where it'll notify you before ISS sightings based on locations you've saved/your gps data.
The app is free and pretty great. I have it set so that my phone background automatically and regularly changes based on which types of astronomy-based photos I want to see.
I definitely recommend looking into it. There's a wealth of info and many, many thousands of photos.
Edit: Here's the link from Google Play Store -
Not a downvoter but, I would say yes it is adding to the problem because AirBNB has made it easy for more people to advertise and it's not limited to expensive homes.
Here is one example of just a normal apartment. It is apparently a popular one too and as I am currently looking at it, "80 travelers saved this space" and has "been viewed 346 times in the past week".
So in an ideal situation let's say this person achieves occupancy in this listing 23 days out of a month. They're possibly getting anywhere from 20-50% more revenue than if they were renting it out as a longer term rental. If/when the landowners in the area become savvy about maximizing revenue this may put pressure on rental prices overall.
The easiest solution is regulation. Either through incentivizing the renting of such units to support longer term rentals with tax breaks or regulating and taxing AirBNBs at a higher rate. It's clear, penalties in the form of zoning violations are less effective whereas the suspicion of avoiding taxes gets state law enforcement with pump shotguns allover your property. Of course it's an extreme but my point is, if there is political will, they can just tax airbnbs and any reasonable owner knows not to skimp on taxes as the penalties for tax fraud are extreme. Don't pay your taxes? Ok, that's state property now until you pay your taxes.
I agree to your concept that more affordable homes need to be made available, but I'm also saying that this AirBNB issue is also a contributor to the housing problem. It is a complex and multifaceted issue and it's clear that, if a desired change is to be achieved, there needs to be multiple solutions. Therefore in my opinion the fair regulation and taxation of AirBNBs would be one small part of the solution. I wish I had the financial backing to be an AirBNB mogul. Oh the things I would do..........
I've been a Tor user for ages. Even went to a tordev meetup on the big i once and I manage or help manage a few nodes.
It's much more performant than it used to be but it's still not really practical for streaming or downloads as circuits are still prone to random disconnects. Latency is rough for interactive work.
I do know several people who use Tor for all of their browsing. I admire the dedication but I am an impatient man so that's not for me.
The best way for anonymity is to use tails and put noscript into default deny mode. The second best way is to use the TorBrowser Bundle. There's just too much of an attack surface, so I would not personally use a Tor browser plugin for anything but the most casual of experimentation. The TBB is very easy to install and use.
Expect a lot more captchas and a few sites that will outright refuse to talk to you if you're on a known exit IP. This can be worked around using bridges if it's important to you. To their credit, reddit doesn't make it annoying to browse while using Tor.
The state marketplace closed down and now uses the federal. Yes, it's beneficial to use the marketplace, especially if you don't have much income, at which point you will qualify for subsidized rates.
The federal marketplace's website was rewritten after launch and is now a great starting spot. It's literally one of the best online forms I've ever used. It helps you hone in on exactly what you need to do. The toughest part was when they had to hand me over to the private insurers who all basically suck at making insurance easy to parse, but even that part was less painful because of the Obamacare plans.
according to the comments here - https://www.alltrails.com/trail/hawaii/hawaii/kilauea-iki-trail-and-crater-rim-trail?u=i it's closed for good due to the recent eruption
This is a particularly good trail if it is really hot. It is almost completely shaded until you get close to the top. Where these girls ended up is on the ridge once you get to the top and you pass the end of trail signs. These ridges should only be attempted by experienced well equipped hikers. I'm not providing this link to scare you off, but only to demonstrate how completely ignorant these girls where. Check out the gallery of this Geocache. This is the ridge to the west of Kuliouou.

You could try AirBNB and get a house in Lanikai, Diamond Head, or the north shore. North shore will be further from shopping, but more out of the way.
Try these...

since no one said it yet, i'd look into soundproofing your apartment by adding a layer of soundproof material to the ceiling, walls and floors.
you wanted options, its an option. doesn't have to be permanently attached.
if the noise is solely coming in through your windows or sliding door balcony, you might consider putting some kind of sound proofing material on a folding room partition on both sides of your door at night. then simply fold them up during the day.
something like this https://www.amazon.com/Sorbus-Divider-Partition-Foldable-Dividers/dp/B08CBDHMKW/
but covered in sound proof material, like foam or mass loaded vinyl

$300 for a good night sleep i'd do it in a heartbeat. i dont understand so many people get up at 4am. i guess for mainland 10am? soooo early.
good luck man.
or since you already have curtains on one side, it might be worth it to try curtains on the outside too.

You'd better be a nerd, coming here and applying for a library job! From one nerd to another, there is probably enough nerdiness here to sate your nerd lust. The community isn't huge or anything, but it's close-knit enough that it'll feel bigger than it actually is. I've never found myself wanting for something to do.
Hawaii Geek Meet has a shortlist of the usual suspects, though I know there's more than that.
I guess the one thing is that all these groups are not super well-coordinated, so you gotta know people to keep up with them, but once you're in, you're in. For example, there's a fairly diverse punk/alt scene in Hawaii, but unless you wouldn't know it from walking around town. Not hard to get to know people in your interest range, though :)
The ECWMF model looks a little worrisome for Oahu next Monday morning. The GFS model looks much better.
anniversary is coming up mid-November. Budget: $1000-$1500.
List of needs:
Niceties:
TLDR; You can't get all that in one place.
A Hotel room with private Jacuzzi for adults only doesn't exist. The resorts have Jacuzzi, but they will be populated by families.
Massage/Spa: Keep an eye on Groupon for some half-off ones and schedule for the day.
Evening Show: Live music found in and around Waikiki. Or if you want to stay at Turtle Bay, they have a jazz festival coming up in november. http://www.turtlebayresort.com/hawaii_packages/
Again, they have pools, but no such thing as private night jacuzzis.

Obviously a bit more expensive than in Hawaii, but probably cheaper than buying it in Hawaii and shipping it to the mainland.
Yesterday in front of the Merrill Lynch Building on Kilauea St. We had 170 people show up and you can stay up to date right here
Nah, there's a Ruby Tuesday's at the Windward Mall in Kane`ohe.
Hey man, its not bad for being new at it. Everyone has their own style but personally I like to have more cutting on the beats. Check out these two that I did on separate trips.
Also I know you are trying to do this video all about snorkeling but its always nice to change up the scenery a little bit to keep things interesting. Maybe a shot of the ocean from above the water and a couple shots on the beach to change it up a bit.
I am not a lawyer, but my understanding is that failing to use a helmet (on a bike/moped/motorcycle) or use a seat belt in a car don't currently constitute evidence of contributory negligence under Hawaii law even if using either would have prevented some injury (i.e., the fact that a plaintiff did not use a helmet or seat belt can't be used against him/her at trial.) I'd recommend calling one of your state legislators on May 3 if you want to try change that.
Note: For helmets, I've seen <em>Kealoha v. County of Hawaii</em>, 74 Haw. 308, 844 P.2d 670 (1993), which found that no one has a duty to wear a helmet to prevent injury to oneself. There doesn't seem to be any case law specific to seat belts, but assuming the Kealoha holdings are still current, I think it would result in a similar ruling.
I start my day at http://news.google.com. It used to be Google Reader, but the use of RSS has changed and the volume is much higher, so I don't use Feedly as much as I used to use Reader.
Reddit is probably my next stop. Then social media and recommendations from friends. Facebook first, Twitter later, since the latter has become very noisy.
I don't really watch TV news or listen to broadcast radio.
While we're here, talking about how you're leaving for the Washington Post...can you give this lady a stern, very awkward talking-to? http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/12/12/this-is-what-an-obama-presidential-library-in-hawaii-would-look-like/
Hey Reddit...MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU! We're about to leave for the day...on our list today are some adventures inspired by you. As a thanks, here's a portrait of our astrodroid with our souvenir mugs from Germain's. Mahalo!
Update: We have a pretty decent backpack carrier for our kid; he's not huge, and we like to hike, though mountainous terrain might be a bit more of a challenge.
Our son also likes parks, playground equipment, stuff like that. Is there a good spot on the North Shore to get a photo of the mountains unimpeded? Or a sunrise / sunset spot?
Here's some photos of us for scale. :) https://www.flickr.com/photos/papatonepictures/

According to Julian Assange, who has read thousands of Hillary Clinton's secret (prior to Wikileaks) cables, "A vote today for Hillary Clinton is a vote for endless, stupid war".
Here's the link:

I would encourage everyone to read it (irregardless on your feelings for/against Julian Assange), because it's informative. Alternatively, you could read a couple thousand cables on Wikileaks ...
Yes. Pray. I wish you the very best. I am arriving on Oahu on Thursday morning.
According to the latest predictions, Hector should stay South of the smaller Islands - but the predictions have a lot of uncertainty right now. And the waters around Hawaii are very warm for early August. The NWS and everyone else is hoping that the Jetstream will again move slightly and push Hector further south but the latest maps are not very encouraging. It will probably be windy and maybe wet on Maui.

I visited the Big Island with my mom a few years ago, and it was amazing! I'm linking a (probably overly detailed) trip report I posted on Tripadvisor.
I'm definitely not a local, so please take all my suggestions with a grain of salt. I found Tripadvisor to be hugely helpful as I planned, if you're looking for more specifics.
I completely agree with /u/tattedspyder 's recommendations, especially the Kilauea Iki hike and the Thurston Lava tube (you can do them both as part of the same hike). And yes, see the sea arch and the petroglyphs. The scenery is so surreal and beautiful.
We loved the farmers market in Hilo, and if you come on the right day, there are also wonderful local crafts. If your mom likes shopping, she'll love it.
And we didn't make it to the summit of Mauna Kea (sadly!), but the trip to the visitors' center, along with the presentation outside of the stars after dark was one of our trip highlights. I have NEVER seen the stars look so bright and beautiful. Just be careful driving home; it is dark and foggy!
You will hardly find houses on the coast to rent on Big isle. You wi;; find condos. Especially Waikoloa area both there are two versions. Waikoloa at Kings Landing which has coastline. The Waikoloa village version is 6 miles up the highway away from the coast.
You can also go Craigslist Got to be careful of craigslist on scams though. If you need to know if it's legit. just PM with the ad to me and i'll tell you if it's bogus or not.
You should be aware though that Big island is geologically young. Most beaches are rocky form volcanic flows. the nice sandy ones are up in North Kohala District like Waikoloa area that i gave. Kona has a few and Hilo Puna side big fat zero. Though you can access the ocean not a sandy bottom.
Edit just so you are aware. Big Isle is has no night life either due to fewr tourists. It's geared toward quiet nights and outdoor activities. Nightlife is for heavy crowds like Oahu.
Yeah, I miss it. I recently picked up the Kirkland Islay single malt but it's not good. There's no subtlety at all and it is waaaaaaaaaay too sweet. Ah well, it'll work for the floater on a penicillin.
something like this would be good for you. capacitor not battery based because of the heat you're going to get year round in hawaii.
and what do you really mean by hardwired? they ship long ass USB cables with these things so you can easily tuck the wire behind the headliner and the a-pillar trim with an old credit card, then under the dash with the included wire clips.
the only thing you'd see is the dual port charger (with one port in use of course) in the cigarette lighter.
$58 installed (assuming they don't jack up the shipping price)
I assume you're interested in culture in general? OHA publishes Ka Wai Ola entirely for free and in English. You might appreciate it. I think it might be good to check out since OHA uses Hawaiian words a lot too :p

However... the Luaus for tourists are very touristy. Really not something I would recommend. If you want to try the food you will find plenty of local restaurants that serve hawaiian. If you want to enjoy hula, go to a REAL hula event (or attend Merrie Monarch festival in Hilo on the Big Island - already pau for this year... try next year).
A real luau is a family/friends event and makes the 'professional' luaus look silly.
Edit: as for things to do / see... look at the sidebar to the right (here, on the hawaii reddit page)
I agree. It sounds like OP wants to visit BI (volcanoes) and O'ahu (Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, more shopping choices). Approximately 10 days on each is a decent time. It will give you time to do some exploring, some relaxing and do a variety of other things without feeling rushed.
You may be disappointed in our reefs. They're not the same as you have back home. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of life/activity, but they're not the same.
As for Hotel/house. Have you thought about B&Bs?
Check out https://www.airbnb.com
Doesn't really give separate routes but here's a gigantic mapping of the routes: https://github.com/PasDeChocolat/LiveBus/blob/master/public/data/bus_topo.json
Github maps it out automatically, to map it yourself you'd have to use another mapping tool. I'd recommend Leaflet: http://leafletjs.com/
I would have to disagree that this meets the WHO definition. The quote you provided states altering of DNA in a way that could not occur naturally, hybridizing plants (especially of the same species, as your op quote mentions) can occur naturally, it's just that we are facilitating it happening faster. This method of genetic manipulation has been occurring since the first farmers existed. They say the GMO method is often called recombinant DNA technology. This is a test tube method where they introduce specifically constructed chemicals/enzymes to cleave DNA sequences and then add a specific DNA sequence to insert itself and manifest as a desired trait.
According to that same WHO FAQ: >Whenever novel varieties of organisms for food use are developed using the traditional breeding methods that had existed before the introduction of gene technology, some of the characteristics of organisms may be altered, either in a positive or a negative way. National food authorities may be called upon to examine the safety of such conventional foods obtained from novel varieties of organisms, but this is not always the case. In contrast, most national authorities consider that specific assessments are necessary for GM foods.
Implying that GM foods and foods genetically altered using conventional methods should not be defined together.
I just found this short video on cross breeding to create new types of fruit (with apples instead of grapes). It's more of an eli5 but I think it's pretty interesting still and explains well how fruits like these cotton candy grapes are created.
Make sure you get the partner tool for this:

Musubi Press for $8.56 on Amazon.
Buy a cheap non-contact infrared thermometer, like this one. Shoot it at everything in your house to figure out what parts of your house are the hottest and use that information to change things. Then, shoot the thermometer at everything outside your house to see what is cool. Next, shoot it at your neighbors' roofs, windows, walls, etc. and figure out who has the coolest house. Try to figure out what makes those houses cooler and what can you implement from those houses. Talk to your neighbors . . . but don't mention you checked the temperature of their house because that's weird.
best treatment IMO is something like boric acid or advion, where it takes out the nest. Versus sticky traps that just treat the symptom.
Note the recent amazon reviews are 1 stars, so the product in the link might be a knockoff. The real stuff works.... at least 6 months, probably a lot longer. I live in a condo which tend to be infested because they travel through the pipes and cracks between neighboring units.

You usually have to work a bit to find native birds on the islands. Most of what we see are relatively recent arrivals.
I recently read Wind, Wings, and Waves, published by UH Press. It gives a nice overview on this topic (among many others), and points you towards other resources if you want to learn more.

It's cute! I have no idea why it's so pricy on amazon though lol
Great comments on this thread. To add a bit more depth, I would suggest picking up the book "So you want to live in Hawaii". You can pick it up on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/So-You-Want-Live-Hawaii/dp/0966625307
If you can distribute Android and Windows devices there's a program called DroidCam that can do the same thing:

If you guys can wait can you get these from Best Buy?

TWC is well known for their packet shaping of certain types of traffic including youtube and bittorrent. You can bypass it by paying for a VPN service like BTGuard but keep in mind that doing this technically violates their terms of service.
Not sure if Alaska goes to the east coast, but if you can fit your dog into one of these you can take them in the cabin with you and put them under the seat. It was $100/dog from San Diego to Honolulu when we moved out here.
*Alaska airlines Honolulu -> Seattle -> NYC seems to be an option. You could keep your dog with you the whole time. And if by some chance they tell you when you get to the airport that the dog has to go in cargo Alaska is the only airline (I think) with temperature controlled cargo holds.
Woah, trippy, I literally just learned that while listening to Captive Paradise. Are you me?
Seriously, though, it's an excellent book and I've learned a ton reading/listening to it.
So you're saying you're neither right nor left, but a third position that will supersede both?
If you give me the make and model, my super secret supplier will have it for cheap. And I cannot see this taking more than 3 hours of work, I would normally charge $30 an hour, but the Reddit discount knocks that down to $20. PM me if you are interested.
Amazon, brah.

I wouldn't trust the bars that just suction to the wall.
There are already some great book recommendations in the comments, but here’s another: Nowhere Slow by Jonathan Gourlay
The author lived in Pohnpei for 11 years and married a local. It’s beautifully written, and even made me laugh out loud quite a bit. An interesting (and very entertaining) insight into the culture from an outsider’s point of view.
Neat! Who's organizing this? There's no contact information on the single-page site.
There's a monthly speaker series called Honolulu Science Cafe. I'm sure there's some complementary energy to be tapped.
Would also be good to set up on Meetup.com. A lot of people start there looking for meetups.
The Olowalu Massacre is worth looking up to understand the impact of foreign trade with Hawaii and the desperation with which Hawaiians sought foreign goods.
Beyond that, the audiobook Paradise of the Pacific by Susannah Moore concerning Hawaii's pre contact and post contact culture was a definite eye opener for me
Do you have a camera placed to watch where the UPS people are dropping off your items. Perhaps you're being porch pirated.
I haven't moved, but recently had a 145 pound "mistake" sent to my house. It was a full sized weight lifting squat rack.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N4I8FOY
UPS also had some girl, who must weight 85 pounds soaking wet, deliver it...and then she had to pick it up 4 days later (although I was able to help her with the pickup).
But beyond this mistake, Amazon service has still been pretty solid.
Gigi was 16# and her carrier was @ 2-3#. It was a soft sided carrier with an extra zipped section you could extend the sides a bit. The weight limit on Hawaiian was 25# total (pet and carrier). Months before we moved I had two older Shih Tzus but unfortunately we had to put them down two months apart. I tried to fit the 18# Shih Tzu mix in the carrier and it was so crowded. I doubt it would have been comfortable for the entire flight. No one measured or weighed the carrier. FYI, the carrier will stick out from under the seat. So the person sitting there won’t have much leg room and we bought the extra leg room seats too. We were fortunate as the flight wasn’t full and the gal at the check in blocked our 3 seat row so we put Gigi under the middle seat. If the wind doesn't blow much at night or at dusk / dawn, this sounds like a solution worth discussing.
Today, though, it seems like it's nice and steady day and night: https://weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/l/b1edd3596b219c38d8f4d6c2f5ccba7ca1a60f9ff165ddc572b596b27744e056
My husband and I spent about 5 days on Kauai this past spring and one thing I'd suggest is Kountry Kitchen in Kapaa (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g60616-d519119-Reviews-Kountry_Kitchen-Kapaa_Kauai_Hawaii.html) It looks a little 'hole in the wall'~y from the outside just driving by but it's really cute inside w/all the rooster artwork, the food was delicious and reasonably priced. I suggest the Portugese Sausage for breakfast and the pancakes. 1 pancake is quite enough; it's probably the size like a foot diameter plate? Maybe bigger? It was a cozy, relaxing breakfast we hit up a few times we were there.
I can't remember the EXACT location either, but there was this beautiful overlook on the north side of the island either near or on the way to Hanalei. http://i.imgur.com/FyID8DZ.jpg It's a fun thing to find driving around and exploring. We did a lot of that while we were there. Just drive about taking in how beautiful the mountains, forests and shores were.
No don't bug bomb. Just use Advion like the other person suggested. They have little bait stations if you don't want to use the gel. You will be amazed at how good this stuff works
I also got sharpening steels, one ceramic and a honing rod

I get this delivered every month. Once I recall it being mid lockdown and the mailman was rhe only visitor everyone got and I remember a mail carriers truck outside my house, on the side so it wasnt super obvious, and I could hear a lot of shuffling and the guy was exhausted. So I checked on him and he was a new guy that got stuck on the route because my regular guy was out sick and they were hella short staffed. He was a younger guy and his face all red from the heat and he was not in the mood to talk to me nor even really enunciate. Told the guy I was gonna grab him a drink and made this amino green apple flavor energy drink and made 2 glasses and brought out the pitcher with me. Understandably he was hesitant to drink it and declined twice even. Third time he finally accepted and he drank that thing in no time. Then after a little awkward silence and reflection, on his part, he asked “what was the name of that again?” And he mentioned “yea, not bad” then proceeded to ask for a refill! It’s funny because I swear that drink, specifically the green apple, will without a doubt every single time quench the thirst of whoever I’m sharing it with. Come by my house anytime and i’ll share a glass with you… and probably some food if you look hungry :P
I used the auger where I had to spin and push it by myself, like this one. After that didn't work, I bought the powered Ryobi one and I still couldn't get the spiral metal thing far enough down the drain.
When the plumber showed up, he said there was a bend in the pipe and you gotta push and spin at the same time, but you also have to "feel it" so you know when to push more and when to spin. Meanwhile I was thinking "that doesn't really help me." Fortunately, I haven't had a clogged drain since, so I haven't had a chance to try out the "feeling."
Do you have any tips on how to feel the bends in the pipe?
And about the Stingray, they have apps out there that tell you where the known cell towers are and how your signal should be relative to them. Wouldn't be hard to adapt one of those to an app that would tell you you're getting service from an unknown, and possible Stingray device.
Oops, someone already made one...

I really like the ones I got on Amazon, can also add the tension rod if needed:
How much do you want? This one ships to Hawaii
Just buy thisadapter, and get a 20lb tank. I use mine constantly, and only have to refill it once a year.
Paradise of the Pacific- Approaching Hawaii, by Susannah Moore. Have read Kalakaua's Myths and Legends of Hawaii, as well as parts of I'iwi Brown, David Malo, etc. Moore's book condenses text from a variety of Hawaiian scholars as well as extracts from ship's logs and missionary records. Utterly fascinating-https://www.amazon.com/Paradise-Pacific-Approaching-Hawaii/dp/B013VPYFVK/ref=sr\_1\_6?crid=3MBA2S8FWYY8I&keywords=susanna+moore+books&qid=1659045561&sprefix=sussana+moore%2Caps%2C252&sr=8-6
Dole Whip - buy the mix, mix it with water or milk, throw it into your ice cream maker, and enjoy. Not a traditional Hawaiian dessert by any measure, but very popular in Hawaii.
