Absolute legend for the drum corps world. There's a very, very short list of people who have had as much of an impact on the activity as him. Sending my thoughts to the entire Cavaliers family.
Related side note: there was a book written about 12-13 years ago that's about Mr. Warren and The Cavaliers history called "Building the Green Machine." I discovered and read it when I was first getting into drum corps and it's a fantastic history lesson about both The Cavaliers and the activity as a whole. Definitely recommend everyone here check it out.

Electricity is power.
Buy yourself one or two of these and revel in ~~the time you can spend on snapchat~~ the ability to avoid shackling yourself to the power strip warlords. It'll charge your phone 3-4 times so you only have to charge it every other day at worst.
Be careful who knows of your power. Someone will approach you every bus ride to try and mooch if your secret gets out. If you're feeling particularly heartless, you could probably charge snacks for time with your battery. The plight of the common pleb is of no concern to you, after all.
While we're on the topic of brains and drum corps, I read Smarter a few years ago. The premise: the author researched the leading theories of how to make someone smarter (defined by learning hard concepts easier, applying knowledge faster and retaining information longer) and went out and experimented with all of them for two years. His major finding (and he admits this is an unrealistic situation but the data suggests it is the best) is that the absolute best way to learn anything new is to learn it while simultaneously exercising and playing a musical instrument.
I wrote the author right after I read it, saying he needs to do a follow up study/book testing this theory with drum corps members. Hopefully the reason is obvious to the folks on this sub. I didn't get a reply. :(
These are possibly the greatest portable stands ever invented. I have one and I love it compared to a crappy wire one.
I use Google Flights for price comparisons.
Also, for whatever reason, Southwest does not publish its fares outside its website, so make sure to check their website as well.
Sorry. I'm going to chime in on this with the same thoughts as other people have. I'm beyond doubtful, but will gladly eat my words if this turns out to be a successful venture.
A good start would be to read Bill Cook's writeup about what he went through starting up Star of Indiana. A good person to connect with is Bob Jacobs with Jersey Surf. He truly understands the business side of drum corps.
Here are some questions. Can you answer these, OP?
How are you getting the word out to potential volunteers? You're asking for 22 volunteers for a 10 hour audition camp.
How many people have expressed interest?
Are you reaching out to local schools?
What is your administrative background? Fund raising?
Does the corps have any local officials that've bought in to the concept? Local companies that support?
What is the situation with equipment? Have the horns/drums been purchased? If so, how? I know you were looking at Schiller horns and building front ensemble equipment?
Touring...is there a schedule?
Has this corps been approved by DCI?
I've said in the past, simply being passionate about music/drum corps is not enough. You have to have a strong business sense as well. Passion, unfortunately, will not pay the bills.
Start SMALL. This is why DCI started the SoundSport competitions. Get everything running smoothly before you grow. I'm not trying to kill your dreams, just want to make sure that this won't be another corps that shows up, build a website, makes an announcement like this, and then disappears forever. We all want to grow drum corps, but also want it to grow in a healthy fashion.
I can definitely understand your point and I do agree that the opportunity may not be a good fit for everyone. It may, however, be a better fit for someone that requires such an internship as part of their studies, and we are able to support and fulfill such requirements for academic credit.
I am not sure if you are familiar with MuseScore, but it is a free open source music notation application paired with an online community. MuseScore, like many open source projects, is built for the community, by the community.
As a free community-driven open source product, even many aspects of software development, documentation, support, etc. are volunteer efforts of the community.
There are, however, some internship opportunities that are paid, but these are done exclusively in cooperation with supporting partners, for example, with Google Summer of Code - https://musescore.org/en/developers-handbook/google-summer-code
Regarding specifically our new efforts in marching percussion, our aim is to create the best solution in the market for marching percussion notation and make available absolutely free everyone. This opportunity is appropriate for those interested to participate in and support this community effort and goal.
That would be true if the judging system was tick based. The highest possible scores are "maximum", not "perfect". The rubric the judges work from uses descriptors of what each score range looks like (Box 1-5). The descriptors talk about what a show looks like in each box (consistency of execution, expected skills, frequency of errors and ability to correct). Box 5 doesn't mention that there should be no errors, just that there is consistent excellence. In other words, a small amount of errors doesn't necessarily mean that the performance can't reach the maximum amount of points.

The fans were similar to these: https://www.amazon.com/Max-Storm-Lightweight-Janitorial-Purple/dp/B007T01JJK
And the fabric was a very very thin and lightweight one. Probably nylon, it felt like a parachute
Have you ever seen a c corps performance? Many of them are that age, they had a cymbal kid in 2012 who couldn't look more than 4 years old.
https://gyazo.com/1772d90832693f3a28ab5c9bf76513f0 Here's a picture of them. Also fun fact, the girl on the left is a soloist I believe for A corps this year.

If you want an even bigger shock go to that page.
Seriously man, use Bittorrent Sync.
It's like cloud drives but is built on the bittorrent protocol but files and folders can be shared with links to folders just like with Cloud drives.
But, if you want to spring for unlimited cloud storage, I'd recommend Amazon's Unlimited everything for $59.99.
Oh, I understand. He was issued a paycheck, with pay stub and I assume an I-9 and such, but there was a mix up that lead to him being accused, charged, and arrested over a paycheck dispute? Then the DA dropped all charges and said nothing about a paycheck in their statement, just that he couldn't establish that it he didn't not have permission use the money he was accused of taking.
The police report says that the board of Horizon accused him of taking the funds for personal use. https://nextdoor.com/agency-post/tx/odessa/odessa-police-department/1-18-17-opds-recent-felony-arrests-40799248/
Regardless, the optics are bad especially with the proximity of Horizon, and Guardians Hub City. I hope that the org distances themselves from him otherwise Tall City might always be associated with someone accused, charged, and arrested for theft of funds from a similar non-profit in a nearby city even though the charges were dismissed with the DA essentially admitting he took the funds but wasn't told he wasn't allowed too.
Drum Corps Europe Finals are happening live NOW! The live stream is free and DCE would like to keep it that way. You can help by donating to their Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/drumcorpseurope?ty=h.
As promised - early season Devs 2002. This recording is from the Orlando show, on June 22. Oddly enough, I think I have recordings from Devs, Cavaliers, Cadets, and Magic from this show.
I think this may help:
http://issuu.com/drumcorpsinternational/docs/2012_judging_sheets_full_set?e=1376842/2992110
Take a look at the sheets. (these are older but still pretty much work). The content box on the back of the sheets is pretty descriptive.
Criminally underrated show. Especially the contra line, they had amazing sound. I particularly like them in the song at 3:20, that arrangement really shows off that full sound.
I’ve got a few; 2 you’ve probably heard of and one I had to read for a class:
Enders Game
Band Of Brothers
Begging For Change by Robert Egger.
Robert Egger the DC Central Kitchen and in the book he discusses how he went from owning a club to becoming aware of food insecurities in DC and the inefficiency of how the issue was being addressed. He then founded the DC Central Kitchen that attacked the problem in 2 ways. It trained people to become cooks which gave them a marketable skill and they also learned money management and other skills to help them once they have secured a job. They then used the food that the students made in class to donate to people who need it. The change in the title is a change to how problems are addressed for a more permanent solution as opposed to temporary ones.
It’s a fascinating read and not incredibly long. If anyone is interested in social work, nonprofit, or something similar I would recommend it. /u/druler you would probably enjoy it
https://www.amazon.com/Begging-Change-Nonprofits-Responsive-Efficient/dp/0060541717/ref=nodl_
Side note: if you use Amazon type the word “smile” before amazon in the url and amazon donates a small percent to the nonprofit of your choice. Many drum corps are listed. Ex: https://www.smile.amazon.com/Begging-Change-Nonprofits-Responsive-Efficient/dp/0060541717/ref=nodl_
Edit: my example doesn’t work on mobile. RIP
THIS IS THE BEST BACKPACK OF ALL TIME. The Speedo Teamster 2.0 35L is by far the most durable, utilitarian, slick looking, and quality bag I’ve ever used and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Mine has made it through 4 years of high school, 4 years of college, 3 seasons of drum corps, every vacation or travel situation I’ve had since 2015, and the only signs of wear are a small tear in the leather pad on the bottom, and a small hole in the mesh of the water bottle pouch.
The Speedo Teamster 35L is absolutely incredible, I recommend it so so SO highly. This backpack should come standard at everyone’s birth as far I’m concerned.
hi! i recently went to a colt cadets camp in march. here is what i would suggest. ( i play trumpet but still very similar)
some tips: - get up earlier then everyone to shower( wake up is at 8 i usually got up at 6:30.)saves a lot of time, you get the whole shower room to yourself and you can relax after your shower until wake up - socialize! people there are so so nice! sit with others at lunch don't eat alone - put in effort! the staff will take note of this
hope you have fun! dm me if you got any questions!
In the organization I’m in, this is what we were given and I think they’re pretty good. You just put them together (pick your size out of the silicone tips they give you and attach the ear plugs to the string they come with) and they even come with a case too! About $25
Lots of good advice in this thread. I will add one I didn't see below: Cooling Towels along these lines (there are a lot of options): https://www.amazon.com/YQXCC-Cooling-Microfiber-Camping-Football/dp/B082HNFVVZ/
I haven't marched in decades, but we use these a lot in the food truck (the one place that is often hotter than the field), and strongly recommend them for marching members. You'd be surprised how much they can help avoid overheating.
One piece of advice: Don't take anything you don't want to lose, or get trashed. Don't take expensive electronics, sentimental items, or anything with lots of moving, breakable or melt-able parts. Simple, cheap and functional are the best. The one thing drum corps is really good at is destroying stuff, no matter how much you try to take care of it.

>I'm not sure BD does have anything to learn from them since they two of those shows and were in spitting range of the other on finals night.
They have plenty to learn. Audience and judge look for two different things.
>Also https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/non%20sequitur
Very good. You know how to research! You must have watched some BD shows! But I was talking about the comic strip. Stop trying to change the subject.
here ya go. I'm not sure if it is a bad thing i'm showing this to other people but oh well. the hardest parts are the actual audition pieces. they're the last two tuba things. the "lyrical" and "technical" pieces.
I'd suggest having some hearing protection with you. I find the basic foam Hearos brand to be pretty solid and inexpensive and available at Wallgreens or CVS. With that said though you may find the levels not too loud and may not need them.
I also like the Hearos that is for Musicians but your need to order those.
Get a cot instead of an inflatable mattress: far more comfortable than any mattress.

You're welcome.
SOMEONE MAKE THE NOISES STOP
Jokes aside, I have a constant high pitched ringing in both ears. Sometimes my hearing will go out in one ear temporarily, and an audible ring will be all that I can hear for the next 30 sec.
My professor always taught us to protect our hearing with ear buds, especially as we get older or sit in front of brass in the pit lol. She's got the $400 customized prescription kind that let sound through, but these $20 will do the job for my poor man's wallet.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
i asked a well-respected brass instructor about this a while ago, and what he told me is that playing with ear-canal sealing ear protection creates a false inner pitch that's about ten cents higher than your natural pitch. he wouldn't let us wear any ear-canal sealing ear protection for this reason- stuff like earasers, those plugs you linked, and so on.
they honestly probably don't create that big of a difference in your personal practice, especially if you play with a tuner. just something to think about.
also fwiw the eargasms you're linking to are mega overpriced for what they are. etymotic research is the originator of the high-fidelity cone plug design, and you can get theirs on amazon for a little less than half the cost of those eargasm plugs plus a cord at no extra charge. check them out here. i wear them at most rehearsals i teach, now. they're indispensable.
Intex twin airbed. I got mine on Amazon for fifty bucks. Pump is built in and easy to use. Also puts you a little high off the ground so you can prop all of your other shit up around it. Definitely a bargain.
So sorry if the link doesn’t work, Google Play seems to be slowly rolling it out. I think it’s a safety thing since it’s a new app from a new developer account. Hoping it’s available to everyone soon!
I just checked and the new version is available on the play store. The latest version is 5.0.573. I'm not sure why you would not be receiving the update.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DrumScorps
This is what I used last year and I loved it, 10/9 would recommend https://www.amazon.com/Raised-Airbed-Built-Electric-Height/dp/B000M0MJU2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=d1a50877-312f-48b7-9d1a-8a8a5b6381f2&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-2&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=5550342011&pf_rd_m=ATVPD...
I used this thing to keep all my tiny loose stuff on the bus organized, super helpful
Related note for anyone that hates dealing with nasty tap water, I use one of these for hiking but you could easily take it on tour (it's the size of your palm) and always have safe and clean tasting water for $20.
I didn't and now my ears make crackling sounds when I hear certain frequencies/volumes. I did finally get these guys- https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-Protection-Earplugs-Standard/dp/B0044DEESS when I was in grad school and the wind ensemble rehearsal room was pretty loud.
The case I have for it is one of these -- not quite a traditional hard case, but rigid and thickly-padded unlike a gig bag. (The guy I bought the horn from had been carrying it around in a gym bag with towels in it.) I'm hoping this is protective enough because I'm having trouble finding any aftermarket hard cases that'd fit this horn.
Try and get the jack guy from the other comment to talk about this too because he is going to march with them. But for me, definitely LONG TONES, LIP SLURS AND BREATHING EXERCISES!!! Those are the keys to being a good brass player in general. Start working on finding/practicing your Technical and Lyrical Etudes. Also I have found these things to work well for finger dexterity. It helps with fast passages and things like that.
http://www.amazon.com/Hemiplegia-Exercise-Trainers-Rehabilitation-Equipment/dp/B00KW4ZVIU
For breathing do in 4 out 8, in 4 out 10 all the way out to 16. Then in 2 out 4, in 2 out 6 all the way to 10. The do the same but with in for 1. They will teach you more breathing exercises at the camps too.Try to get your hands on a marching euph... that'll be the best!
Honestly just bring a battery charger like this. Charge it at night and you'll be fine. I mostly used my phone on the bus to listen to music on tour and I was fine this way.
I use this one. I like that it is bright orange so it is easier to find on the bus or inside my bag.
This EC Technology power bank is probably the best I've ever had. Good for more than 5+ charges, and you can have multiple devices hooked up to it at once.
http://www.amazon.com/EC-Technology-22400mAh-External-Smartphones/dp/B00FDK2G2C
We have "Baby Banz" hearing protection for each of our kids. They wear them at drum corps shows and anytime they're in close proximity to the drumline I teach.
They work very well, and the kids like them: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SW3EZ6
I had an Aerobed PakMat which I highly recommend. The case doubles as a hand pump, so you dont have to worry about batteries or power outlets in the middle of the night. Yeah you look ridiculous pumping it but I was always one of the first ones in bed every night. The case is hard plastic too so you dont have to worry about it getting ripped under the bus. That and a thin sleeping bag and pillow filled the top half of my suitcase. I thought it worked out great.
