Frankly, I would NOT hold out for a neopets-like site, most of them are... like you say, bad or unpolished.

So, I'm going to push a game I found on reddit via some askreddit "What's your favorite browser game" thing - it is very unlike neopets, more like a browser RPG that's awesomely punny and lampshades things and reminds me of xkcd - http://www.kingdomofloathing.com/static.php?id=whatiskol

None of these pets actually exist yet-- I have their names on sides (all of them courtesy of Lost & Pound), but I am waiting on the last of trades to go through so I can morph/paint + make everyone wear wear their gear at the same time. Also got to wait out the next four days or so deleveling pets (my main's under 4 months) and moving pets to the accounts I want them to stay on... heh.

I haven't had the chance to do the whole make-characters-and-petpages thing as a kid-- I totally had the motivation and time, but not the skill. But I'm older now, and totally making up for it.

I'm so excited. Their story is that they are the emergency ambulance team during the biggest war waged between Dr. Sloth and Neopia, where battles are being taken place in space. Krisk (Pirate Aisha), Goswald (Alien Aisha), and Coifon (Royalgirl Pteri) form the Away team-- they retrieve the injured, avoiding firefight all the way. Poltra (Korbat) the Doctor, Boddle the engineer (Ghost Grundo), and Arovi who runs communications down to Neopia/the away team (Brown Ruki) form the Support team, who help make sure the away team and injured come back safely, as well as keeping the ship running in top shape. Finally, Vatari the biologist (White Kacheek, who I am applying to adopt), and Stayer the chemist/physicist form the Science team. They're constantly making new technologies to hopefully get an upper hand on Sloth. I would really, really like to submit a NT series about this team as well, but that will require some extensive planning on my part, haha.

I think they chose TwoX because it's the biggest female-oriented subreddit and it's something all women could be into, whereas /r/makeupaddiction and /r/redditlaqueristas would only appeal to some women.

The safe space thing sucks, but I don't know, I think the sub will evolve and it'll be fine. I mean, for what it's worth, the whole safe space thing really only happened with the last 2ish years (whenever the mods stopped allowing ~~link~~ image posts except on Fridays) and the sub is already way different than what it was originally.

If you folks haven't tried Kingdom of Loathing yet, I recommend it. It's a text-based parody of adventure games. You go on quests, building up to saving King Ralph from the Naughty Sorceress, then you ascend to Valhalla and get reincarnated as a different class with new skills.

The art is terrible, but you should definitely take the time to read adventures. KoL doesn't have the draconian rules Neopets does. No filters in chat, you can buy premium content with meat (the in-game currency), and you can trade premium items for meat, and you won't get frozen if you play on more than one account, though you can't use one account to farm items/meat for your main account.

If you sign up and message me in-game (AlaskanWeirdo), I'll hook you up with some stuff once I have access to my stash again (you lose access to your old items for 1000 turns after reincarnation). The community over at /r/KoL is also pretty great.

I'm REALLY tempted to grab Sekkaiko. It can be interpreted as a misspell of "sekai" + "ko", which would translate into "world-child" or "child of the world". So pretty.

EDIT: On the other names, I spotted two that sounded interesting too - Asukima and Sheduzi.
Asuki is a Japanese female name, apparently, that roughly translates into "tomorrow-joy" or "Joy of Tomorrow" (for 明日喜). For the others, "明日姫" translates into "Princess of Tomorrow".
Sheduzi just sounds funny because I'm reading it as "shi-du-zi" in Chinese, which translates into "I am a stomach." So. Have fun. XD

I'll be playing Kingdom of Loathing (an adventurer is you!) which is crazy awesome. About as different from Neopets as you can get, but... still fun! is the password you were using when it was hacked something that you use on other sites? or one that you've previously used before? if you've been affected by other breaches since 2012, someone might have been able to match your email up. try typing your email into https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and seeing if you've been included in any other breaches, because at least then you'll know how it happened and have some more peace of mind about it, even though it sucks to know your information is out there :(

I've only started betting the last few days and so far the chances of busting given have been around 20-35% lately from memory?

I'm way bad with maths but out of curiosity I asked this calculator what the chances are of worst case scenario losing 8 times in a row (if the chances of losing/winning are hypothetically 35%/65% which is going to vary day to day too) and it spat out 0.02% chance (that looks way too low tho, I've probably put it in wrong lol).

I don't have a scanner, so I take a picture of the sketch on my phone, mail it to myself, then redo the lines and color the whole thing in photoshop. You can save files as .png for transparency, while still keeping color integrity.

Firealpaca (http://firealpaca.com/en) is a nice free program that is good for painting. It takes a while to get used to the controls, but it's a bit like photoshop and paint tool sai's lovechild, and, again, free.

Thanks for putting together a guide, password security awareness is definitely sorely needed in every community!

A few notes on how to make even more secure passwords/points I want to emphasize:

• Length is really key—no matter what your password, aim for a minimum of 16 characters.
• Avoid common phrases. Just like you wouldn't create a password that's just 'password,' don't create one that's as simple as 'iloveyou'—which is actually one of the most common passwords!
• Avoid common character placement. Numbers at the end, capital letters at the beginning, etc. all make a password more guessable.
• Avoid '133t'-speak style substitutions. These days, they're totally expected, and 'P@ssw0rd' is just as easily guessable as 'password,' especially with an attacker who is tailoring guesses to the site's password composition policy.
• Also, consider that one of the more likely attacker models for Neopets is an acquaintance or friend breaking into your account. So if you're Joanie, and your husband is Chachi, a password like 'joanieLOVES82chachi' would be super easy to guess for somebody that knows a little about your personal life.

My knowledge is mostly geared toward offline attacks, which hasn't been an issue for Neo as far as I'm aware (someone correct me if I'm wrong?), but it's all still relevant to making stronger passwords. And finally, if you're not confident in your ability to remember these passwords, use a password manager! LastPass is a good place to start.

Neopets just feels so old. The layout is old and cluttered compared to the minimalistic style that seems to be popular lately. I feel like the amount of dailies/shops/games/things to do in general has piled up over the years, making it hard to learn how to get started effectively. Plus, in general, I feel the appeal has died down a little. When I was growing up, there wasn't a lot to do on the web. I pretty much remember just playing shockwave games on Nickelodeon's or Cartoon Network's websites aside from playing Neopets and talking with friends on AIM/MSN. Now, there's so much more to do online as the web/mobile game market is so prominent and social media is everywhere. There are also more convincing pet simulators out there (Nintendogs/cats, Petz, etc). I'd be fairly surprised if something like Neopets got the same amount of traction Neopets had in the early 2000s again anytime soon.

I think there are things out there now that, in the future, will cause people to look back on as inspiration. I really want to see how many engineers/architects/programmers/artists cite Minecraft as being an inspiration to them as a child. It's been such a huge hit I can't see it not being influential in some way.

I attended a small convention a few years back where teachers from around the area came to talk about how they use games in the classroom. It varied from using Minecraft to teach about history (e.g.: talking about ancient Egypt then building a pyramid) to using World of Warcraft as a writing/character building exercise to a group of students who performed Shakespeare play snippets in Halo. I also had the opportunity in college to work with a group of Girl Scouts who came to learn how to make a very simple game (using Scratch ) to earn a badge. I think games will continue to be an inspiration for kids as time goes on, though it's different than when I was growing up.

Did you know there's a fan-run game called Toontown Rewritten? :D Super legit and dedicated, you should give it a try sometime! It's literally the same game (or at least 99% the same), they pulled everything they could from the original game and then coded the rest themselves. Quite the achievement! I haven't kept up with it for a month or so but I believe they just added Bossbot HQ. They're doing some cool new stuff too like HD textures and adding to the story line.

I have heard good things about Procreate, but I don't own Apple products, so I've never personally used it.

Krita is free and works on Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android and ChromeOS.

It's a powerhouse in terms of utility, but the UI is not intuitive. Of the graphics software I've used, I would say it most resembles Photoshop. Its line stabilization is about on par with Photoshop. I make these comments having not used Photoshop since CS2.

I generally only use Krita for art with bilateral or radial symmetry due to the clunky UI. I honestly never bothered to learn how to do most other things with it.

I use PaintTool Sai 2 (Windows Only. Not free, but a lower-end one time license fee) for most of my composition, including the foreground characters in this picture.

I use FireAlpaca (OS and Windows. Another free software) for certain text effects, but it wasn't used for this particular piece.

I pretty much live in photoshop, haha. It's fun times! I'm the creative lead of my company but also a front-end developer. Often, you tend to be either a developer or designer but I'm a magical unicorn that happens to be both. At least where I live they are called the 'unicorn' of my field haha.

I personally went into a digital media program at a tech college/university where I live. It was two years, majored in web development and design but also studied video/cinematography/3d/graphic design/motion graphics and tons of other random things related to digital media. In Canada they have a couple of colleges/university's that offer a robust program where you can learn a lot of things and find what you're interested in. (Hilariously enough, I went into it for Graphic Design but fell in love with coding/web) I highly suggest it! It's the forever career for me. Once you’ve downloaded it, just go to the big list of games, sort by publisher, and scroll down until you find Neopets. They also have all the old shockwave games that haven’t worked on Neo in a while (like the Hannah games) and some retired games (like the original Meerca Chase).

BlueMaxima's Flashpoint project has most (maybe all?) of the Neopets games in it's archives and also several of the plot comics. So hopefully they won't be gone forever, no matter what happens to the site down the line. Highly recommend it!

I know this is kind of late, but I have a solution for installing shockwave on your XP VM. The issue with old internet explorer is it wouldn't allow download redirects, so the simplest solution is to drag and drop the shockwave download file from your main machine to the virtual one. lolyeah, It's a newish game, the demo's been out for a while but the full game only came out recently. The guy who made it also made a pretty popular Earthbound hack, and you can tell it draws a lot of influence from the series. It's got a pretty kickass sountrack too.

Just to make sure no one can get into it again, I would double check that the email account linked to it is indeed yours - and if it is an email account you don't use often, make sure you can still log into it yourself! If you are thinking it's a PITA to have to memorize a new password so you won't change it today, maybe next week or next month: please consider using a password manager like KeePass or LastPass. When you want to login, you just need to double-click on your entry and paste it on the password field - and there are even browser add-ons that automatically do this job for you! You can automatically generate big, complex passwords and change them often, and use a different password for every site you use, all with no effort at all.

okay this might be a long shot, but does anybody else use a VPN proxy like Zenmate when you use trudy's surprise? it was working all week for me, but this morning i went to the page and clicked spin, then realized half way through the spin that my VPN was still on from when I was watching stuff on putlockers. I let the wheel stop but it just had a loading screen, so i turned off the VPN and then refreshed the page back to my normal IP and it said i'd already won something - but I didn't. Nothing in my inventory or my NP's. i'm thinking that having a VPN on might mess with it - would like to see if anyone else had a similar experience.

Actually, I loathe optimists.

As far as I can tell, optimists aren't always happy because they're just naturally positive thinkers. Every single optimist I've met was an asshole who just disregarded anything bad that happened as 'expected' and was rude and/or insensitive to other people and their problems. In one particular case, a friend of mine admitted his parents had been abusive and said optimistic guy was like "Lol,well..parenting is hard cut them some slack. Look at the bright side"

As if there is one in that kind of situation.

And while that's probably the worst thing I've heard it's not like the rest were great either. At least pessimists admit the world isn't a magical fairyland full of rainbows unicorns and lollipops.

Though if becoming an optimist gave me complete control over the entire universe, I'd definitely join the club. LOL
