I've used these for years now. I prefer them because the plastic locking mechanism, while bulkier, grips tighter on your sock/shirt when you pull whatever the clamp is hooked onto. The regular clamping style, in my experience, comes undone as you move around.

I was taught to take the clip and go from outside to the inside of your ankles rather than just straight down. There's also a thing called "collar stays" which keep your shirt collar from curling up.

Found this at Men's Wearhouse a few years back but I think any tailor can do it. That would be bulky and unnecessary - the loops work well and don’t slip because they’re secured onto your foot by your shoe. Having it sewn to a sock would mean you need to carry multiple sets of shirt stays, since you change your socks every day.

If you don’t want the loop or the sock clip styles, there are also garter / thigh strap designs out there. I don’t wear the sock clip style as they can detach from your sock and spring back to hit you in the crotch, but I’ve worn the loop and garter styles regularly and they both work without issue.
