I've used these for years now. I prefer them because the plastic locking mechanism, while bulkier, grips tighter on your sock/shirt when you pull whatever the clamp is hooked onto. The regular clamping style, in my experience, comes undone as you move around.

I was taught to take the clip and go from outside to the inside of your ankles rather than just straight down. There's also a thing called "collar stays" which keep your shirt collar from curling up.

That would be bulky and unnecessary - the loops work well and don’t slip because they’re secured onto your foot by your shoe. Having it sewn to a sock would mean you need to carry multiple sets of shirt stays, since you change your socks every day.
