Thanks! I bought a grabber on amazon months ago. Every time I go for a walk in my neighborhood I take my grabber and a couple of grocery store bags and pick up trash while I walk. Its incredibly easy and you might as well get something accomplished while you get your walk in...

More of us should be actively cleaning things up.
For a non-NSA alternative, I use Sweet Home to automatically copy photos to my server whenever I'm home. Then I back them up using borg to rsync.net (they offer a discount for borg users).
We should have a weekly cleanup thread. We have 70,000 users here but lets say 10% are active. Let's say 10% of those participate.
700 people filling up one bag of trash a week each would be huge.
Edit: As /u/reversering noted, these grabbers are helpful. If anyone is interested in one and doesn't have the money to buy one themselves, PM me. I'll buy one for up to 10 people.
5 takers so far!
Also just created /r/Cleanup_Philly . Happy to add people as Mods. I don't have the time to really build out the sidebar and all right now but will put more time into it in the fall after work calms down.

Normal precipitation (to date) 35.84"

> however the ride itself is quite stripped
This is the terminal mode of failure for these types of knobs.
The part you're looking for is called the "spindle," and if you take measurements you can order the appropriate size online. Measure the length and the diameter of the threaded section, and then make sure the cross section of the middle part (usually square) is the right size and shape.
Edit: if you'd like to pm me the measurements and your school address, I'm happy to order it for you along with whatever your favorite snacks are. Teachers get way too much shit to put up with this kind of petty stuff.

Hello Philadelphia, this map with the roads of Philly looks great and I thought that the community might like it as well. If you'd like to personalize yours you should definitely try Sphaera.
Yeah, Strawberry Mansion and Allegheny West were originally very very Jewish, at it's peak it was high 90% jewish, neighborhoods. Many of the churches in those neighborhoods were originally synagogues. You can read all about it here

This is good info, but I am also waaaay ahead of you.
There is a 311 app where you can take pictures and enter this info on the fly, which is super cool. You can also get notifications when they respond to the submission and you can look up your requests for a status update.
I was actually able to get L&I to come out and check some of the properties, mostly the dangerous buildings. They have been marked to be taken down, but that depends on L&I's time and budgeting.
I also got my neighbors to start using the 311 app, reporting stuff like illegal dumping or any other violations the city needs to know about.
There are cheaper beers, there are better beers, but there is no cheaper, better beer.
edit: source -
> I pretty much "grew up" drinking Yuengling - the friends who taught me to drink in college were beer snobs, just undergrad beer snobs without much spare cash. Where so many of our peers chugged vast quantities of Milwaukee's Best ("The Beast") or Keystone Light, we drank a lot of Yuengling lager alongside Iron City's offerings. When out of towners express curiosity about it, I reflexively recite the cliche:
>"There are cheaper beers than Yuengling. There are better beers. But there is no cheaper, better beer."

Between June 1st - September 10th there are 102 days.
If we consider Friday/Saturday/Sunday as weekend days, and exclude holidays there were:
45 weekend days in that time for 2018
47 weekend days in that time for 2017 and 2016
44 weekend days in 2015
42 weekend days in 2014.
PHILADELPHIA:
In 2018: 40% of those days rained. 47% of weekend days were rainy.
In 2017: 36% of those days rained. 38% of weekend days were rainy.
In 2016: 25% of those days rained. 13% of weekend days were rainy.
In 2015: 31% of those days rained. 18% of weekend days were rainy.
In 2014: 31% of those days rained. 29% of weekend days were rainy.
I did the math.

Hey Sean, I’ve been frequently attending R5 shows for 15 years. So first, THANK YOU for all you’ve done for the Philly music scene.
One of my favorite parts of the old R5 site was the old show archive. Any chance you’d ever bring that back to the new site?
I overheard some guys talking the other night that there aren’t any shows at FUC this summer because of some licensing issues. Any truth or additional details on that?

Data blocker. This one is for a computer, but they also have ones if you want to use a public charging stations.
For example, the charging station in the North Face store on Walnut has a disclosure on their site saying they do gather info and also shares it with the retailer.
If you are a history nerd like me, I recommend Philadelphia: A 300 Year History.
Pulpit and Pinnacle loop. Go very early as it gets super crowded, especially on the weekends (and this weekend might be the last non-freezing weekend!).
This Reddit has a weekly meet-up event every Thursday at Cooperage Wine and Whiskey. That might be to your liking. Meetup.com is another tool that I have used once, and met some interesting people--tailor it to your interests, and you may meet some like-minded individuals to build friendships from. Surprisingly, most of the pubs throughout the city are conducive to meeting people as well; most folks are largely outgoing, and more than happy to have a conversation. However, if you do not drink alcohol, there are plenty of recreational sports leagues out there, volunteer opportunities, or perhaps within your place of employment. Your future neighbors may be open to friendly banter as well, but everyone's mileage varies when it comes to neighbor disposition. Becoming a regular presence within your neighborhood is bound to introduce you to some people as well. The most important part is to try to break out of your comfort zone, and go out of your way to try to meet people. It's tough trying to make friends in a new environment. Local bars, and pubs have always helped me out--usually there are regular patrons who are more than happy to meet you, and have a conversation.
Yes, everything's fine, ignore the massive CO concentrations, all is well.
This made extremely sad. At heart, Governor Rendell is a good man and a great Philadelphian. I highly recommend A Prayer For The City if you have an interest in the City or politics.
You probably don't want to know this but they can get through just about anything including brick walls. I took down a section of wall on a rehab recently and in the loose mortar joints were hundreds of eggs, all through out. Wherever I repoint, i find eggs. Joist pockets, more roach eggs. They can squeeze into extremely small spaces, travel through out your house and breed that way.
My best advice is to use poison like Combat and to be careful how you store your food and garbage.
So the book in question that I linked is:

If you read the comments you’ll see that many if the reviewers agree with Purcell’s take on the situation and give their own experiences with violent intimidation at the time.
This blog post has plenty of relevant excerpts from the book:
http://devinhelton.com/lost-world-of-west-philadelphia
The most relevant:
“Even though all the black kids were still out on our front porch, Mom unlocked the front door and opened the storm door just wide enough to yell, “Get the hell out of here.” As soon as those words left her mouth, I saw a fist burst through the slightly opened storm door and make contact with the right side of Mom’s face.
Thank God the kid’s fist also hit part of the storm door, breaking the impact of the punch just enough so that Mom wasn’t seriously hurt. She was sore, but not nearly as sore as she would have been had the punch landed squarely. We got Mom out of the way, and the six of us kept pushing and pushing at the door until we finally got it shut and locked again. I’d never felt such a terrible combination of anger and helplessness.
Someone had just punched my mom in the face in our own house, and there was nothing I could do about it. The black kids on the porch were still trying to force their way in. If we had a gun in our house, I would have begun shooting out onto our front porch until I was out of bullets. As soon as the black kids heard police sirens getting closer, they took off running.”
Would you have stuck around in that neighborhood?
>Nope. Being a black nationalist, much like being a white nationalist, has no legal consequences, only social.
She's a wackjob and by all appearances harbors more racial animus than the subject of the story. Why they chose to interview her is anyone's guess.
Get a half dozen of these and patch them side-by-side.
It's just about preventing multiple patrons use/stealing/selling passes.
When I was growing up we used to pull all kinds of different tricks to get free rides on SEPTA, including passing passes back out (then going down a stop and using it at the next station) or just 'borrowing'. Also, people definitely get robbed for passes. And if you wound up with a F sticker you would have to hide it with your thumb when you swiped it - either that or take it off, but that would make employees suspicious.
It's just a preventative measure, not a great one, but valid enough to be a pain in the ass when you're trying to rip off SEPTA.
Paris imports a bunch of sand to create a beach experience on the Seine during the summer. They’re called Paris-Plages.
Kinda the fancy French version of dumpster pools.
weather.com has a dramatically different forecast...at most a 25% chance of rain tonight.
How can the same meteorological information be interpreted so differently?
Well, I look forward to your rant on Friday.
Has it ever occurred to you that these people target you because you respond to every single thing they say? They'd've had to have eaten a house full of paint chips to believe the things they purport to believe, but you continually act like they're arguing in good faith (start vid at 18m10s). Which, in turn, just makes it more fun for them.
I know none of that is going to change the way you act, so how about this - post a list of folks you'd like banned from /r/philadelphia on Friday and I'll ban all of them for a week. This will cause no issues and will totally get them to stop harassing you, both in other subreddits and via alt-accounts.
I'm willing to do it - what's the worst that can happen? I get double-banned from /r/philadelphiagoldclub?
Buffered, but if past Streets decisions are any prediction, it'll be all paint. Besides, even the bollards are a joke. They need an actual separation that physically prevents cars from entering the space, or people are going to die. It's not even a question of if, just when.

$63 for a brand new one on Amazon.
Reality is, it's better to just use it on your own car... what are they gonna do? Boot it again?
If you wanna be stealthy, just scratch it up, or if you're really hardcore spray a stenciled "PPA" on the side but that's not common.
No insurance, no fees, no info requested. They pass out a dish and people donate a few bucks if they want. It's an excellent organization that takes inspiration from Abraham Low's book "Mental Health Through Will Training," which I also recommend. Here's the meeting locator tool on their site:

I see on the website of the LiveWell group mentioned by OP that it is endorsed by Aaron Beck, who has been called the father of Cognitive Therapy, so I imagine the two groups share some characteristics.
Good q. It's tough with, what /u/hpliferaft just posted, there are almost 400k cats on the streets of Philly. It's a lot of cats for not a lot of rescuers.
If they're really itching your craw and you wanna do something about it. Go to your hardware store or amazon and get a cat trap . Not too expensive and you can catch em yourself. I know that PAWS sometimes has a $20 neuter service and I'm sure there are other low cost options around the city. Probably call around. I know this isn't much help ATM, but I'm busy with work and am having a hard time finding the free neuter services :/
This is gonna sound counter intuitive but I’d suggest posting in Facebook’s Roxborough Rants and Raves.. It can be a foul toxic swamp of rank stupidity and aggressive aberrant behavior BUT there’s a good counter current of anti-assholery as well.
The other place is Nextdoor. I’ve seen a fair number of Roommate wanted posts, for example.
So thats why it's purple on google maps
I remember my first time hitting the meadows on my bike. A few winters ago, I was out on a Wiss ride with a friend of mine, neither of us too familiar with the trails at that point, so none of our routes had managed to make it to the meadows. As the ride went on, the sky turned more and more grey and the temperature seemed to drop. We approached the climb on Mother and mashed our way up. As the inclined thankfully decreased, a few snowflakes began to fall. The closer to the meadows clearing we got, the heavier the snow came down. By the time the trees cleared and the singletrack started to flow, the snow quietly blanketed the trail as we laid down first tracks.
The Wiss has many rad spots, but the Houston Meadows are a gem.

Schlage is a VERY respected name in locks/mechanical security. It's no Medico, but it's a huge step up. I'm a former locksmith.
Everything is sold out so you aren’t going to find something readily available. I’d second buying a quality bar from Rogue or another premium brand depending on what you need.
Sign up for in-stock alerts for Walmart’s bumper plate set. I’m assuming you aren’t training for Oly so these are fine. I’ve also really liked the equipment from Fringe Sport. They have anticipated in-stock dates for next month, and their bumpers have been great even dropping from overhead. Metal plates are metal plates. If you don’t need calibrated, buy whatever you can find.
Adjustable benches are crazy expensive. Maybe start with a flat bench and prop it on plates to start. I’ve never been able to justify the cost of having one at home.
If you can find a rack or cage in stock, keep in mind that ones like this can often be assembled with the pull-up bar facing down to save on height. I’ve used that in a garage with a lower ceiling, and it’s fantastic for $200 if pandemic pricing and availability ever subsides.
The Wissahickon is a great place to take in the trees. They hit max color at the end of Octoboer. Try taking some of the trails near the top of the valley (enter near Bluebell circle ) and there is a series of cliffs and overviews that are awesome for viewing the whole valley. There is an entrance at Upsal and Park Line drive just past the circle.
Been there. There's always a line of cabs. Down in the baggage claim, walk out the side opposite of the "street" where people are getting picked up and hotel busses are shuttling folks. It's all cabs.
I remember the rings that had a circular magnet on the top.
I just looked it up, and they were around in 1986. Here is a news article about them: [(http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2209&dat=19860727&id=p5wrAAAAIBAJ&sjid=D_wFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3705,8272894)]

Yep, all of this. And don't get me wrong, I'm still happy to wear a mask when I know it'll help out. But being vaccinated, with the vaccination rate rising the R-value falling, the only reason I'm doing it right now is to follow the rules and for the comfort of others.
As far as fogging goes, these wipes were a game-changer for us. Not perfect in the winter, but when it's not freezing out these basically solved the problem. Not a referral link.
If this is an honest question, buy a mattress bag off amazon. As long as it's wrapped in one then the trash will just take it.
Just did it 2 weeks ago.
If not - I dunno just leave them on the street like everyone else then call 311 after a week and complain.
Make sure to make a reservation in advance for a party that big. It's a great bachelor party stop.

It's held at 6 local libraries and another 4 that are less local: http://www.worldcat.org/title/shame-of-a-city/oclc/212908775
You can visit one of them and watch or rip it to a laptop.
I'm familiar with a few of these libraries so:
Villanova library allows visitors 9am-5pm with photo ID.
UPenn libraries are closed to visitors until after finals (May 13th).
BM's Canaday is open to the public 8am-6pm weekdays.
Temple has it at their main library which is open 24 hours a day right now and visitors seems to be welcome anytime with a photo ID.
I suggest staying at home. Less stress on you and the kids. The Boston Market on Aramingo Avenue. delivers to Northern Liberties only throughGrub Hub.
You can also buy a small air compressor that you can keep in your trunk on Amazon for like 30 bucks. Can really come in handy and you won't have to find a pump.

I saw in some other comments that you've seen/heard him but too late. If you have an old Android device you could set up a DIY motion detector on the backyard.
>The fear is that any new regs could lead to more regs which lead to more regs...
Which is ironically what prevents any meaningful regulations, which is what leads to more preventable violence, which is what drives public opinion to stupid places like an AWB ban:
>Eight-in-10 Americans told the pollsters they favor bans on assault weapons, high-capacity ammunition magazines and "bump stocks," an accessory used by the Las Vegas shooter that allows a semi-automatic rifle to fire like an automatic weapon.
Try addressing the content of a proposed regulation without assuming the "slippery slope" BS that the NRA sells you. Universal Background Checks, federal investigations against straw purchasers, and a national gun registry would make it much more difficult for criminals to acquire guns, and wouldn't have any effect on the number or types of guns you own or the ways that you use them.
Without real federal reform, blue states are just going to keep passing laws that make it harder to own guns, and red states are going to do dumb shit like failing to update their background check databases.
When we moved in in December 2008, our patio looked like this (sorry for the low res photo).
By mid-summer, after we added hanging plants and realized he inherited grape vines and tiger lilys, it looked like this.
It's one of my favorite places in the world.
He's 15. He could be pissed at his best friend and angry he just got dumped and in a moment of stupidty he throws out something horrible that he doesn't understand from the headlines.
In the past, that may have gotten him in trouble with his parents, perhaps at worst the local police. Now he has a the fucking FBI on his ass.
And if you've been paying attention, there have been several instances of FBI "terrorism arrests" that seem paper thin or, even worse, show an agency basically providing the means for random crackpots to follow up on their threats.
Yeah, when ATMs were introduced in Philadelphia area in the late 70s/early 80s, they were called MAC, which stood for Money Access Center, and was the network they were on. So yeah a lot of us old folks still call them MAC machines out of habit. MAC merged with the Star network at some point.
There were commercials with Bill Bergey, who was an iconic tradition of middle linebacking for the Eagles, and the tagline was 'tap mac for a little cash' and he'd hit the machine and it would say OUCH on the screen. Here's a google newspaper from reading about it, from 1979.
Hickory Run State Park! Rented a cabin there back in May for my buddy's bachelor party. We did whitewater rafting and some hiking, really cool area.
Also, you can check out Boulder Field, which is surreal to see in person.
the code is written in a way that suggests it's to make sure you're always getting the most updated version (so you see edits or whatever?). In practice this pissed me off.
This will let you read in peace: https://www.instapaper.com/text?u=http://citypaper.net/uberdriver/
It's just a matter of time before they invade the walls and ceilings. You might not notice it for a while. Eventually, you'll hear skittering noises coming from the walls and you'll see big water stains appear on the ceilings where they have gathered to pee. This type of poison is good to use, but it's best to create your own traps with them using the hole in the middle of the poison. Run a string through the poison pellet and tie it to the inside of a water bottle or some plastic device that dogs and cat's can't access. You can also place pieces of denim and cloth soaked in ammonia outside to ward off rodents. But, please do trim back trees and brush. I dealt with my parents' rodent problem this way. https://www.amazon.com/Tomcat-All-Weather-Bait-Chunx/dp/B000HHOALG/ref=sr_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=rat+poison&qid=1600632598&sr=8-11

But its not the greatest. It's loose around the neck and shoulders and actually fits better if I put it on her backwards and angle it. But she's still able to wriggle out of it if she's really freaked out. I took her down to the stoop and when a garbage truck went by she freaked and was able to twist a out of it. Fortunately she freaked back into the apartment. I ordered another harness that's a strap around it the neck and belly and I'm going to try to use them together to see what happens. She's really good about wearing it; now that she knows what it means she starts purring when I take it out. I'm just afraid about her panicking and disappearing.
These are the ones I used, I wouldn't recommend hanging them inside though they stink pretty bad. I had 100 flies in the trap within a few hours of hanging it up.

We have the same kind of tub and couldn’t find one anywhere around here either. We just bought 2 of them from Amazon and have them both hanging and overlapping in the back. There’s enough overlap that you don’t get any gaps anywhere that let water out. But not enough that it gets in the way or anything.
Still wouldn’t help you until delivery next week but this is the one we have:

Lol
That’s like asking if you’re allowed to drink outside an Eagles game.
As for buying discs? Just buy a very stable, bright colored driver and a putter on amazon. You really only need 2-3 discs starting out.
When you learn to throw and place the discs where you want them then you’ll begin to notice how different discs have different flight paths, you’ll use that like you would a different club in golf for different situations. But buy a cheap set because you’ll beat up your discs (beat up discs become understable) and probably lose a couple in the time it takes to build up the skills you will need to utilize a good disc.
Don’t forget to write your number and an email on your disc, if you lose it then people typically reach out to try and get it back to you.
If you are on android, you could try Google Play: Septa Instant which has an alert notification feature on lines you select.
I use it for the bus live view on the lines which is entertaining, but im not sure how useful.
It's the season for it. Late fall through winter/early spring tends to be windy as hell. Part of it's the annual dip in the polar jet stream, which is pretty much right on top of us at the moment.
fwiw, grass and tree pollen are both high and very high today, probably have been for the past week or so, judging by weather.com and also the ungodly number of times i sneeze per day
Its a great view of Philly. If you go a little earlier you can get a nice view of the sunset I have gone a few times it is one of my favorite views
Got my Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 last week. All works well, got Sketchbook and just bought a Staedtler Stylus Pencil for drawing and sketching, but my Verizon WiFi right now on it is weird, keeps shutting off and a "Cannot confirm authentication" type message keeps coming up when trying to get back on, but again, may connect. May get an hour or two online but this keeps happening. My desktop, laptop, phone and even my older tablet never had issues with this. At an impasse as to why.
Philly Free Streets this Saturday, Sept. 24 from 8am to 1pm.
Won't be as epic as the Pope street closures, since this will be a lot more crowded and is only for 5 hours, but it still should be cool. Great way to start the morning and early afternoon, and the weather will be great.
Well, if some expert could explain why this huge amount of CO (carbon monoxide) has been present since the accident, that would be great.
Taken from realtime satellite data at Windy.com, with the CO concentration layer on.
You expect this to be prevalent over China, Africa or India, and it is, but Philadelphia?
Perhaps this will be a base of operations for Google Offers in Philadelphia. It would make sense to have an office in each city the program is, so that the deals are highly targeted and accurately reflect the demands of its citizens.
It's totally absurd. Not to mention that most people use the same passwords for everything...
More states need laws like this:

I'm not too into club riding, so I can't help you there. But, there are a lot of great routes around here for road biking if you don't mind hills. This is a basic route I like that is pretty low traffic and/or has good shoulders.
http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/20085164
You can build a lot of variations on this route. In my opinion, the best riding is in the northwest portion of the city and the suburbs around it.
>This dude is trying to rent out his one bedroom crib for $10,000 that weekend.
If you actually look at airbnb, you will see that there are pages upon pages of rentals still available under $200.
One idiot who thinks he can get $10k does not a trend make.
Shibe Park was at N 21st St & W Lehigh Ave and from Google Maps, I get the feeling that the street there is W. Somerset Street?
And yes, those are bleachers built on the rooftops.

I'm not a fan of facebook BUT the app I DO use is the Facebook 'Local' app. It will even recommend events just for you (like being a Philly visitor).
Please prove me wrong that it's the best all-events app.
The reality is: most event hosts put their event on facebook and the data is very structured and easy to navigate unlike: uwishunu, thephillycalendar, Philly.com, visitphilly etc...

There's an entire book written on Philadelphia's specific ghost stories
There's nowhere in the city that more fits an occult theme than Eastern State Penitentiary. A prison built in the 1800s that was only recently restored, with large parts still crumbling ruins. Lots of ghost stories associated (though I do want to caveat this with the fact that ESP is much more than ghosts, has a ton of great real history associated, and does a ton of great work regarding criminal justice and the inequities of America's prison system today)
The Mutter Museum definitely has occult vibes, an entire museum of medical grotesqueries
And finally, my favorite Philadelphia urban legend - the bus to nowhere
> and there's really nothing you can say or do, but yet he still is right there in front you and it's pretty annoying
Can report them on the SEPTA Transit Watch app. Probably not always effective but it's something.
After you visit Randy’s shop you should check out Riot on the Dance Floor the surprisingly interesting documentary about Randy and the punk scene in Trenton in the 80’s.
Such an unassuming picture.
Who would think such an innocent tree would attract something so evil?
Awesome. My wife absolutely loves stuff like this. I just bought one of the last two copies they had on Amazon, for her. Thank you, she's going to love it!

In the same boat and finally got a $15 wireless doorbell from Amazon, attached it to my mailbox and made a little sign that says "Deliveries" with an arrow, and it's worked perfectly.
Make sure you join and post to the Philadelphia Stolen Bikes Facebook page. There are occasional stolen bike recoveries, but it helps track where/when a lot of the thefts occur: https://www.facebook.com/groups/120319078000282/
search groupon, sometimes they exist, sometimes they don't. This is one is for a 30 minute flight, the $99 flight I took was for an hour. I should also mention, you get a chance to fly the plane as well. Check out Legacy Aviation and groupon for different options.
That's really impressive. Don't they film some of their scenes in Los Angeles though? The other day I found the intersection and building for outside Paddy's Pub. This is the location that was recently used in this scene here in Mac's Big Break. You can see they replaced the street signs to make it more "Philly."
How much do they film in Philly rather than LA? I find it hard to believe that they'll fly out there for each episode. But I'm pleasantly surprised that they do go to Philadelphia for a lot of locations that they don't really need to.

Whoa. Cool it. Waze is a GPS app that uses crowd-sourced data in addition to real-time traffic data to give you the best possible route. It's extremely convenient and always tells you the best route, which varies depending on the time of day. I'm sure you've had good experience with taking Callowhill and all of those other streets, but that won't be helpful if there's a crash, road work, or unusual backup, or if traffic patterns change and people start taking different routes and Callowhill is no longer viable. Plus it's totally unnecessary and annoying to have to memorize routes.
