A remarkable man. After his four minutes of fame, he retired from running and became a brain surgeon. He literally wrote the book on clinical neurology.
Because ESPN can dictate what news is.
7 AM: "Wilson wants to be best ever"
7:30 AM: have Mike and Mike discuss the chances
9 AM: Trot out Jaws with a contrarian opinion (say, Kaep will challenge him for title) using unnamed sources
12 PM: other media outlets pick up quotes used by Jaws
2 PM: Wilson goes on ESPN owned radio, is asked about being best ever and if Kaep can catch him
4 PM: breakdown of Wilson vs. Kaep
*edit: See what I mean? A Google News search of "Russell Wilson best ever" yields 123 articles that have picked this up so far.

Act like a smug prick because you now can watch ESPN 3 from any location, even if your ISP is too cheap to pay our ESPN overloards. (Will work for International douche bags as well!)
EDIT 1: Amazon EC2 provides 15 GB of transfer absolutely free. It's $.10 per extra gig. I've never hit the limit.
EDIT 2: Micro instance is free for 1 year. On-Demand Micro instances are .02 per hour after your free trial is up.
EDIT 3: You may need to allow inbound access to your chosen port. Click on Security Groups from the EC2 console and add your port. (Not sure if 80 is open by default. I've been using my instance for quite some time so I'm not sure what ports are there by default..)
EDIT 4: For Linux and Mac douche bags:
Quick Config
Start your ec2 instance
ssh -i <pem file> -D 5777 -f -N ec2-user@<your ec2 instance name>
Install FoxyProxy in Firefox
Set your host to localhost and your port to 5777 in Foxy Proxy.
And you are done.
Some background for those who aren't big baseball fans- Simmons is a once in a generation defensive player in his 3rd year who is already being compared to Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel (the best defensive shortstops in baseball history). No one else in the world makes this play.
Edit- here is a video with sound that also includes the play from last year. Credit to /u/icantsurf
when the red sox won in 2004, Doug Mientkiewicz was playing first and kept the ball after catching the final out. I remember reading that the red sox and MLB were pissed he didn't give it back, not sure what happened though
It was Ed Yourdon (https://www.flickr.com/people/72098626@N00) who originally took the picture.

Big ups to his brother for calling out the bullshit at his funeral.
The pass there was from Neymar. The match was a brutal one, Valencia was tremendous against Barcelona. The defender following Messi in the video there, Otamendi, was all over him and the rest of Barcelona and ran them ragged. Messi was going very slowly at the end there (for him), he was clearly running on fumes.
I'm not good at titles when I'm tired and posting late, it's true. Perhaps this is better? Messi is too exhausted to get up to celebrate his 400th Barça goal, scored in the last seconds of the match.
Now accepting alternative titles.....

Ali talked a lot of trash, but he was a genuinely good person outside of sports who was a caring father and who stood up for causes he believed in (civil rights, Vietnam, etc). Personally the guy is one of my heroes.
My favorite Ali quote says it all:
"I would like to be remembered as a man who won the heavyweight title three times, who was humorous, and who treated everyone right. As a man who never looked down on those who looked up to him, and who helped as many people as he could. As a man who tried to unite all humankind through faith and love. And if that's too much, then I guess I'd settle for being remembered only as a great boxer who became a leader and a champion of his people.
"And I wouldn't even mind if folks forgot how pretty I was."
A little background:
This is Aleksey Lovchev from Russia who competes in the super heavyweight division in weightlifting (+105kg). He weighed in at 140.46kg today at the World Weightlifting Championships in Houston, Texas.
After his team mate, Ruslan Albegov (another world champion), pulled out from the competition no one really expected anyone to catch Lovchev. Many people were hoping for a closer competition after seeing a competitor (Lasha Talakhadze) in the training halls snatch 200kg for two singles but Lovchev managed to win 3 golds with a lift to spare.
So he decided to increase the weight by 16kg to 264kg, 1kg over the old world record set by Hossein Rezazadeh at the 2004 Olympics, 3kg over the old total world record also set by Hossein Rezazadeh at the 2000 Olympics.
He's been pretty quiet on social media lately so I don't think anyone expected this; last year for example he posted a 220kg box snatch before worlds but unfortunately bombed out on the snatch - although he won a clean and jerk medal. The last we had really seen from him was an easy 200kg snatch plus 245kg clean and jerk from Russian Nationals and a little bit earlier in the year an attempt at snatching 215kg.
TL:DR - massive lift, absolutely crazy, snatched 211kg, set new clean and jerk plus total world record (264kg/475kg).
105kg = 231.49lbs | 140kg = 308.65lbs | 211kg = 465.18lbs | 264kg = 582.02lbs | 475kg = 1047.2lbs

I think this comment from Metafilter is very relevant:
"...It is well-documented that most people, when confronted with horrors, completely panic and blank out. I believe there was an article on Metafilter earlier discussing a plane crash where most crash survivors were so traumatized they remained on the plane and burned to death rather than escaping. On 9/11 there are numerous accounts of office workers not attempting to escape, instead remaining at their desks while the buildings fell. It is not uncommon in serious war zones to witness even soldiers acting completely irrationally in the face of death and destruction, trying to rescue a comerade even though they're completely blown in half.
If you read the grand jury report, you would know another eyewitness is a janitor who was a Korean war vet. He saw Sandusky performing oral sex on a boy in 2000. He didn't help either--he panicked, ran, and when he recounted the incident to coworkers and higher ups he was so traumatized they all thought he was having a heart attack. He directly stated that he had seen many awful things in the war, but nothing as terrible as that.
SO. We would all like to imagine that we would enact our terrible revenge fantasies on Sandusky if put in that position. But none of us have ever been in that position. McQueary was nearly 30 and he ran to his father. Is that evidence of his cowardice, or evidence that what he saw was so deeply traumatizing that in that moment a grown man turned back into a child?..."
EDIT: More about panic inaction.
He was the exception of several generations of pitchers. Odds are you'll never see anything like him again. There's just too much money on the line now and no manager/owner will risk a hundred million dollar contract on a pitcher throwing that fast for more than 100 pitches. If you haven't seen Fastball yet it's on Amazon Prime and it really speaks to how fast Nolan Ryan consistently threw. When they first started using radar it was measured at the plate and Ryan was throwing 104/105, I think Aroldis Chapman hit 106 or 107 as a closer but they were measuring at the release. They did some math figured Ryan would have been clocked at 108 or 108 by today's guns. And this is a guy that would go 9 innings doing that whereas chapman might throw 10 pitches. It's fucking insane.
John Lynch I submit for your viewing pleasure. Hardest hitting safety of all time.

Modern mostly refers to standardization of rules and regulations, stuff like what a strike zone is and how far the pitchers mound is from the home plate. All this stuff has been stable for the past 111 years or so. Here is a wiki answer about it.

Edit - apparently this video was possibly edited by Reebok to make it look like one continuous shot. The jury is still out. Regardless, it's impressive and Sid has moved over to CCM after hearing of Reeboks dishonest motives.
Edit 2 - Sid did not move to CCM because of this video. That was an attempt at a joke, albeit a poor one but who really would have believed that? Wow.
Edit 3 - This is getting out of hand but as /u/50mHz points out, the puck that appears next to Crosby is the puck he slapped, it bounces back clearly in the video. Still not sure about magical puck on the boards though.

I first learned about the climb from this children's book, which was published in 1993 and refers to both of them equally. Maybe in earlier years there was more focus on Hillary as you said.
Been a while since I read it, but I believe there are more details in Quidditch Through the Ages
> He was a decent QB, but nobody was willing to pay him because nobody wanted to deal with the locker room disruption.
Well, now you are getting a little crazy. The Jets and Eagles both gave him a chance and he failed in both places. Also, the only season Tebow had enough stats to calculate QBR, he was 28th in the league.
So you're saying that NCAA scholarships do not cover the cost of room and board? The NCAA says different
Also, in that same link, it states very clearly that athletes are still eligible for need-based aid, as well as a special fund the NCAA created just for them.
Im sorry but you're actually wrong: "Though we hate to ruin a good bit of lore with the facts, the truth is that although Mormons have been advised by church leaders to avoid caffeinated beverages, this suggestion has not been passed down as official church doctrine to which all members in good standing must adhere (unlike, say, the admonitions against coffee, tea, tobacco and alcohol, which are church doctrine). Mormons can swill Coca-Cola, eschew it and all other caffeinated beverages, or indulge in the occasional Coke and still be considered churchgoers in good standing." Source
Mormanism is inherently hypocritical, just like all religions.
Here's something I found on the evolution of spikes
the first 2 images in the presentation look really uncomfortable and stiff. Wearing such stiff spikes would definitely make a huge difference in how you run and thus alter your performance

ESPN says the ball was snapped at the 43 which makes sense considering punters stand 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage before taking the snap...
It depends how you look at it. NYC gets more rain in inches, but it rains more in Seattle. How does that make sense you say? Seattle gets light rain way more often.
https://weather.com/science/weather-explainers/news/seattle-rainy-reputation
If you want to maximize the amount of time you burn off the clock, you run the playclock down to 1 then call a timeout. You don't leave it up to your center to time the snap. Look at the box score, Michigan took timeouts after first and second down. The playclock is 40 seconds, Michigan got the ball with more than 2 minutes remaining. They had to burn every second they could or Wisconsin would have got the ball back.

My short list is:
It give corporations the ability to sue nations in private courts without an appeals process for the loss of projected profits. That means corporations can sue for our tax dollars. It also sets a precedent for private courts to supersede our nation's sovereign laws. Further it puts American tech industry in direct competition with Asian labor pools which basically use slave labor for production. It's the same old game. This allows corporations to extract profits without actually growing the areas they insert themselves in and then pull out when the pennies no longer add up.

Well, Simmons' is probably acceptable to most writers.
If pronunciation would be awkward with the added -’s, some writers use only the apostrophe. Either use is acceptable. (Diana Hacker, A Writer’s Reference)
Exceptions are the possessives of ancient proper names in -es and -is [such as Achilles' and Isis'], the possessive Jesus’, and such forms as for conscience’ sake, for righteousness’ sake. (Strunk and White, The Elements of Style)
With some singular nouns that end in -s, pronouncing the possessive ending as a separate syllable can sound awkward; in such cases, it is acceptable to use just an apostrophe. (Kirszner & Mandell, The Brief Holt Handbook)
Since writers vary in the use of the apostrophe, it is not possible to make a hard and fast rule about the apostrophe in singular words ending in s.… Punctuate according to pronunciation. (John E. Warriner, English Grammar and Composition)
Same play the University of Arkansas (Razorbacks) ran in 2006 against Auburn. Perhaps not coincidentally, Gus Malzahn was UofA's offensive coordinator at the time, and served as head coach of Arkansas State last year.

There was an article last year about a perceived decline in OL talent. There are several contributing factors mentioned:
The prevalence of the spread offense in high school and college.
Players may condition themselves to perform well at the combine, but those drills don't actually translate into relevant evaluations for OL talent.
The CBA limits the time available for player development.
I don't disagree with any of those points. In my own opinion with zero facts to back it up, I also believe more talent is shifting to the defensive side during high school and college. I think as a goal for pro-level athletes with the size to go to work on the line, the defensive side offers more opportunity for success.
Oh, piss off.
It is not dehumanizing to feel sorrow and compassion for those who are suffering. No one may deserve it, but I give it freely. When I have resources, I give more than just pity, but I always try to have compassion for the suffering of my fellow man and the struggles they face. I'm not the fucking Dalai Lama or anything, but it's the least I can do for those who are less fortunate than I.

Whoa whoa whoa hold on there cowboy. Yes the books have made billions of dollars, but most of that value is in the concept, the IDEA of the stories. The data itself is worth much much less. I can buy the complete set of Harry Potter ebooks for less than $58, complete with a full set of all the data contained therein. I think the horse has got this one.

So, I realize this is going to be a minority opinion that will get downvoted, but the actual scientific literature supporting CTE as a unique neurodegenerative process is pretty shaky. Here is a good article published in the Neuropsychology Review in 2013 that takes an objective look at all the neuropsychological and neuropathological evidence to date for CTE.
here's as brief a summary as I can make, although I highly recommend that you read the article: the neuropathological presentation that Dr. Mckee and Dr. Omalu are claiming as unique to CTE, such as tau protein aggregation, neurofibrillary tangles, astrocytic tangles, etc... are actually very prevalent in other neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's disease, frontal temporal dementia, mild cognitive impairment (a prodome for dementia, typically Alzheimer's), vascular dementia, strokes, other dementias, etc...). Tau protein aggregation is actually seen in healthy elderly adults with no clinical symptoms, too.
Furthermore the neuropsychiatric symptoms (e.g. mood, cognitive, and behavior changes) claimed to be unique to CTE are actually seen in many other types of brain injuries, such as hypoxia, all the dementias listed above, and also in healthy controls.
The authors, and basically all of the non-BU/Omalu scientific community, conclude that CTE is actually Alzheimer's disease, MCI, and a series of other dementias that are being misclassified by the BU/Omalu groups.
But there is an element of pressure -- its what they do in college football all the time. The standard is to play defense first cause it puts pressure on offense.
Typically, since defense is about playing fast and reacting, there is less pressure to execute, while on offense, timing is key, so coaches like to put pressure on offenses to perform.
There is actually an academic paper on it lol,https://www.researchgate.net/publication/4731867_An_Analysis_of_the_Defense_First_Strategy_in_College_Football_Overtime_Games
A big difference is NFL has to go full field, which actually makes the argument for defense first more compelling, but there is no touchdown wins on first possession rule in CFB.
I remember that play, it made the top 10 on SportCenter in Dec. 2009. I remember because Manu was pretty excited about it and gave Dejuan props over twitter:

Well said. Mark Cuban predicts the NFL is going to lose a lot of popularity soon. And even though I am a life long Broncos fan, I can see myself losing interest in the spectacle of the NFL and bloated advertising budgets. Little league participation is down and if the early talent isnt developed, there wont be a product to supply at the ridiculous demand from sponsors to concessions and $25 Sunday lots.

Found an article that misquoted something. You are correct regarding memberships. Where they goofed is they confused membership with participation. There are definitley millions of people who have played.
Heres a link to a sports participation study thats done yearly and is where the Millions number comes from. 5+ million people in the US played atleast once in a year in 2012. No clue what the latest numbers are.
That said the core group of players is more like 1.5 million (atleast 13 times a year). 1 in 300 people in the us play then. If you look at the data in the report core wise thats more popular than lacrosse by a ton.
So again its far from like the top sports in america but its still pretty popular. One of the most popular "fringe" sports.

Or look at Jesse Anthony, domestic level pro from the US: https://www.strava.com/pros/153266 An average of 13.5 hours per week. His longest week was 26 hours, when he was riding the Tour of California.
The fact is that professional road cyclists don't put in huge hours, and instead focus on intensity. That's not to say it's not hard, but it's more so the travel and injury that make it crazy.
If you are American: Watch ESPN, the bible of american sports. That channel sets the zeitgeist for what Americans like in sports, and what gets talked about.
If you are European: Get a copy of Football Manager. Year after year this game is one of the top selling games in Europe, and will teach you about the hundreds of teams and thousands of players involved in the global football market, as well as all the leagues, competitions...etc.

If you are Brazilian: All you need to know for any conversation is: Messi = bad, Neymar = good
Wrong again, most catchers are throwing out less than 25% of base stealers and only a couple ever throw out more than 40%.
Assuming you're in espndeportes.espn.com, click on the 9-dot grid next to "Fantasía". Under "Ediciones" select English. It redirected me to the American site. Or try this.
You've come to some really weird conclusions but you're stating outright lies as fact. He at no point shook hands with Hitler. He most certainly never said anything about shaking hands with Hitler being a happy point in his life. In fact he is rather famously quoted as having said "I wasn't invited to shake hands with Hitler, but I wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President, either."
It's actually easy to prove using the ideal gas law that the balls dropped a full .5 psi more than they should have given the weather conditions. Moreover, the Colts' football air pressure met the predicted range of pressure drop.
HOWEVER, it is very difficult to prove that the measuring protocol was scientific and that the pressure gages were properly used and calibrated.
(I don't have a particular bias, I just enjoy discussing the ideal gas law.)
Only if you take off the -tl at the end, here's some people saying it for proof.
Edit; oh, and as a cool fact it means flower in Nahuatl. I think the -tl sound is really fun personally, try saying; tomatl, ocelotl, chocolatl, atlatl, ahuacatl, coyotl, misquitl and peyotl and see if you can identify which English word comes from each one.
The best gambling game for the Super Bowl is squares. The whole party can get in on it and for a minimal investment, a couple people can get a decent pay out.
somehow I'm able to watch both Hardknocks, and 24/7 but I dont have HBO...ok? you're a fool. how are the shows vastly different? I'm not talking about boxing. I'm talking about hockey, and the way both shows delivered were very similar, if you fail to recognize this then you get an "F" at life. Whats different between following a hockey team for 3-4 weeks in the regular season, and a football team in the preseason for 3-4 weeks, the show is set up the same way, sorry you're brain can't comprehend that just because they have two different titles that the material is similar but thats ok, I know most Americans would fail 5th grade english if they re-took it later in life, so I'm guessing you're one of those arrogant fucks.
Since on the topic of Knuckleballs, if you’re into sports books and biographies, check out the one that R.A. Dickey wrote (at the time he played for the NY Mets [LGM!]). Arguably one of the best knuckleballers in the game and his story is amazing.
The book is called Wherever I Wind Up (amazon link)

If you're looking for writing tips I would start with On Writing Well by William Zinsser. If you're writing high school sports you're probably not going to have more than 5 or 6 inches per story, so you won't have much space outside of the major events of the game you're covering.
If your goal is to become a sports columnist or feature writer one day, I would start with the Best American Sportswriting of the Century and read it cover to cover. You get a great sense of different styles and different mediums. Also, just write. A lot. As often as you can, and you'll start to develop your own style and voice.
For someone new to sportswriting I think Jim Murray is a good one to emulate. Start with this one: http://www.alydar.com/03/jim-eye.html
I've been able to work the stream just using the website on mobile, though.
Are you a fan of any team sports then because I can absolutely 100% guarantee that embellishment happens in pretty much all of them.. It's not a simple issue; here's Gary Neville (who defended against the divers on the highest level for two decades) explaining the issue. It's almost 15 minutes but gives a great overview of why it happens, almost needs to happen and why I feel we'll always see some of it - but I agree with you in that officiating could be much much better.
And as for Pepe.. Diving is not the issue with Pepe. Pepe is a dirty player that does not respect anyone or anything. That's the issue.
He literally said he googled it. Generally you don't need to cite sources for believable claims, and it seems silly that he gave you the recipe for the information and you still can't find it. But hey, check any of the results here: https://tinyurl.com/Ryan-Shazier-Chance-To-Walk

Almost every country is, as far as I can tell, pretty accurate. The amazing junkets, the "gift baskets", the hookers and coke. It's all on for young and old.
