Lastly, here's a few tips: AdBlock is awesome for hiding fake download links. Deluge is an excellent open-source client that isn't in close cooperation with the MPAA (unlike uTorrent, uninstall it as soon as possible). Oh, and remember: torrenting in itself isn't illegal, and it's definitely not piracy! It's simply a method of transferring files.

Can we talk about using uTorrent? Please consider using Transmission, which was made for OSX *(edit, it works on almost every OS now)

It's just much cleaner UI and doesn't have ads..
Deluge. Feature-rich, incredibly light & small (unlike Vuze). Open-source, cross-platform. The only "hard" part of switching was that the "add" button (after you download a torrent) is on the opposite side of the dialogue window than uTorrent's, so I had to break the habit of where I click.

For Windows People: If you don't like this, you can still use qbittorrent (http://www.qbittorrent.org/), Deluge (http://deluge-torrent.org/) or other opensource clients.
BUT PLEASE don't use µtorrent. Yes everybody is using it, you don't have to - most of the parts are closed source, the client was taken away from the inventor and some mysterious devs are working on this tool now.

in an old gaming community we used to use Bittorrent Sync to share movie files, then get together at a scheduled time on our mumble server (you could also use ts3 or ventrillo). someone would give a count down and we would all start the video at a specified time and talk over the voice server. there were scheduled breaks for food/ bathroom where we would all pause and sync our times up in case someone got out of sync.
you could also rig up a multicast through VLC, but its hard and I dont have a lot of experience with it.
Well, Bittorrent the corporation is different than bittorrent the protocol that they made famous. Bittorrent is just a technology company that designed a method to share data, and I don't think they want to piss off the major networks.

Honestly you should have stopped using Bittorrent ages ago, use qBittorrent instead. It's ad free, works much better, and gives you more control in terms of options and settings than most other torrent clients (except maybe Deluge, which I can't get to work right without lagging to shit for the life of me but other people praise like it's Jesus himself). It's also open source on github so they won't do anything shady like uTorrent and use your PC to bitcoin mine or sell your info (and if they do you'll find out about it right away).

With the EpicScale/µTorrent clusterfuck, I switched to Deluge.
It's not as pretty, but once you get to know it it's quite flexible, especially if you want to make a torrent box.
Worried about privacy? Instead of Dropbox, use BTSync and just sync the folder containing your Keepass DB and Key across your devices.
I've been doing this across Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android without issue. It's been great.
You could use Deluge (open source, cross platform) or simply use an older version of uTorrent as many (including myself) do.

No, they're not. They're both for the users of those particular clients. #bittorrent & #transmission
Discussing obtaining Linux on those channels is no more appropriate than coming into ##linux and asking for help on advice on which movie to watch, simply because you'll be watching it on Linux.

This isn't the first time this has happened, and it won't be the last. The title of this post should be "Stay away from uTorrent." not "Stay away from uTorrent for now."
There are PLENTY of alternatives to uTorrent which are infinitely safer and more reliable. Transmission has been mentioned, I personally am akin to Deluge, it's a bit more complicated, but it's capable of doing a little more, and works better for how I use it personally.

uTorrent is riddled with with toolbars and crapware like Ask Toolbar among other things. Also, BitTorrent Inc. has been known to work with the RIAA to crack down on piracy. Get Deluge instead.

From the website:
"Your information stays yours. Sync never stores your files on servers, so they stay safe from data breaches and prying eyes."
http://www.bittorrent.com/sync
The good thing about Bittorrent Sync is that it doesn't use the cloud, which means that its much harder for prying eyes to see what you are syncing. The bad thing about Bittorrent Sync is that it doesn't use the cloud, and that means that at least one device with the file you need has to be on to sync it. This also means that there's no data limit because it's whatever your devices can hold, but this also means that it's kind of a good idea to dump your files on a dedicated machine that's always connected to a connection with unlimited data. That's kinda like a cloud, but not really and you don't have to use it that way.
Edit: Which basically means that it doesn't work like a cloud and more like a stripped down easy to use FTP share over BT protocol, which is honestly all I needed in the first place.

Again, this is just categorically false. You cannot realistically verify every single iteration/version of every single binary distribution of every single application on your system. Regardless of if its open source or not. See for example malware distribution via the Transmission project: https://transmissionbt.com/
Realistically it happens that binaries are modified before distribution
TL;DR: If you installed Transmission in the last few days, check if you've been infected. The infected executable was signed on the 28th and has already been replaced, so there should only be a small number of users affected.
You can check if your computer is infected by seeing if any of the following files exist: >/Applications/Transmission.app/Contents/Resources/License.rtf
>/Volumes/Transmission/Transmission.app/Contents/Resources/License.rtf

uTorrent is a used-to-be-light client. It's not any more, and while the ads may not bother you, there's really no reason why you should support them.
I would personally recommend Deluge. It's light, fast, extensible (Python!), and open source. Cross platform on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Screen shot: http://i.imgur.com/51msw5z.png
I wouldn't recommend anyone to use µTorrent anymore. Deluge or qBittorrent. Deluge's interface is very similar to µTorrent.
If you really want to use µTorrent, /u/still-improving's solution (µTorrent 2.2.1) is the way to go.

Sent. If anyone else wants it. Just search for havij pro on TPB, not allowed to link it.
Edit: Apparently some people don't know that TPB stands for The Pirate Bay, so to make it clear:
(0. Install an adblocker so the nasty ads don't spook you)
1. Install a torrent client. I suggest Deluge
2. Go to the piratebay.
3. Search for Havij Pro
4. There is only one torrent uploaded in 2013.
5. Download
6. ???
7. Profit

I'm guessing you're not big into piracy? The answer is torrents. You'll need to install a torrent client, then find a torrent file for the "Despecialized Editions". The best-known site for torrents is in the news frequently and has a Swedish political party named after it.
(Not sure of this sub's stance on piracy, so no links or site names.)

1.) download bittorrent or an equivalent. The legality here is like how, officially, you're only supposed to use bongs for tobacco. Officially, you're only supposed to share files that you have appropriate licensing for.
2.) download a .torrent file from somewhere. Magnet sites, as they are called, are also technically allowed a lot of places, since they're not hosting the files, just acting as signposts to guide people to other people who have the file. In the places they're not allowed, it just so happens that the servers are hosted in places where those laws don't apply. careful, though. Laws still apply to the end user.
3.) add the .torrent file to your torrent client. in bittorrent, navigate to 'file>add torrent'. The .torrent file doesn't actually contain the movie/book/etc that you're trying to download, it merely serves as a sort of ID that says 'Hey, guys! I'm looking for a file, does anyone have ______?'
4.) once the file has been added, you have become part of a network of peers. At this point, if you don't have the appropriate license, you've begun breaking the law. If the downloading hasn't begun, right click on it and make it start.
5.) You should see a number labeled 'Seeds/Peers'. this tells you how many people have the file you're looking for and are willing to share parts of it with you.
6.) now, just wait for the download to complete. depending on how many seeders there are, it might take a while.
7.) once you've finished downloading the file, don't forget to seed so other people can get it.
I'd go one of two routes.
Run a Plex Server and have your parents access that. But that only works so well if you have the upload speed for it. https://plex.tv/
Also your parents would need a Plex Player, but there are a lot of options for that.
Or setup BitTorrent Sync, that can easily and privately sync the data between two computers. http://www.bittorrent.com/sync
