Even if you don't upgrade, Microsoft has back-ported some of the updates. (Including that little advertisement for Windows 10 which keeps bugging you to update.) If you do decide to install Windows 10, make sure to uncheck all of the sync options (especially the browser history, and voice profiling features), and run this tool: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases
I happily disabled that and uninstalled a ton of built in apps with a handy, open-source tool. https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
Edit: Windows Updates tend to want to re-enable things and reinstall things, happened a couple times so far. So I keep this tool updated and in an easy location so I can rerun it after updates to ensure everything stays disabled/deleted.
Honestly, it's safer to let Microsoft gather your information than install some sketchy-looking tool from a random company registered as a shell in Ireland.
Use an open-source solution like DisableWinTracking if you're worried about safety. Microsoft is a lot less likely to screw you than "Safer-Networking Ltd."
Windows 10 LTSB (long term service branch) cuts a lot of crap (including cortana) and you can use that to remove the remaining spyware.
The guide to install LTSB has been removed so here is the archive.
It's not ideal but it works. I wish Linux would be more gaming-friendly but the wintelvidia thrust won't allow that before long.
YSAK how to disable all of the junk that comes with Windows 10 if you choose to (or accidentally) install it. The easiest method I found is to use DisableWinTracking. Get the EXE, check the top section of boxes, click "Go," restart.
Thanks for the gold kind stranger!
Hey everyone,
A couple days ago I saw the program written by /u/AeroXbird to disable the telemetry and diagnostic services in Windows 10 and I wanted to create something similar in Python that did something similar and a little bit more.
To download, go to the tabs at the top and press on the "Releases" tab, and read the instructions at the top post.
The methods used:
Set the "AllowTelemetry" string in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection" to 0
Clears and disables writing to the log located in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\ETLLogs\AutoLogger"
Append known tracking domains to the HOSTS file located in "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc"
(Repost because AutoMod)
First get all your drivers and install those. Then run Disable Win Tracking to increase your privacy and uninstall bullshit windows store apps that are just bloat. Then use Ninite to mass install some commonly used applications. Then I recommend getting antivirus (either a free one or ESET NOD32) and ccleaner. Then install any other programs you want. Then uninstall Cortana if desired (you have to do some registry edits). Then run ccleaner to clean up your memory and registry.
Your computer isn’t limited in resource. Your processor is from 2014 and you have plenty of ram. There video online of 10 years processor that run Win10 better than they ran Vista. Your computer will have no problem running Win 10.
As for the tinfoil hat, if your only concern was because of performance, you can leave them on. Otherwise, here is a small program that will disable most of it.
If you pay attention during the upgrade and not click next without paying attention, you can disabled most of the tracking feature in the install.
Unfortunately most of the people using Windows 10 are quite aware of it's privacy issues and simply do not care. When the whole world is a panopticon, they being to feel comfortable.
Trying to secure Windows 10 is like trying to patch a hole in a broken dam. You might fix one, but there's 50 more places it's seeping in. There's already projects such that attempt to help.
etc.
1) Do custom install and uncheck everything.
2) Go into privacy settings and uncheck everything
3) Do not use Cortana
4) Do not log in with Microsoft account anywhere, use a local account.
5) Run "run.exe," select all 4 boxes press disable, then delete.
I did this all manually as I found out about it but it doesn't take that long once you know what to do.
The github tool posted in this subreddit a while back also does the hosts file mod, without the hacky complexity. Did you try it?
Edit - https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking this one, it's open source and safe.
I would recommend downloading this. It might not be perfect but it helps a lot.
https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
Edit: If you also want to use Spybot Anti Beacon then I would suggest running DisableWinTracking first and then the Anti Beacon.
I found another tool for the same purpose, which also allows you to uninstall all (or much) of the W10 bloat.
DisableWinTracking on GitHub. Open, so it should be easy for those who knows how to check the code.
Edits some registry keys, disables some services, removes One Drive, and blocks some domains and IPs via the hosts file and Windows Firewall. https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking#methods-used
The thing is, those are most likely not issues from Microsoft's perspective, they're intentional, therefore they are probably never going away. The fact that some recent Win7 and Win8.1 updates have brought the same concerns with them is even more evidence to that.
A couple of people have come up with ways to disable Microsoft's tracking, though. Check out this github repo.
https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking -- if you're concerned about mostly routine tracking ("spying") on how you use your computer. It's benign to the average user but it's easy to turn it off.
There are a ton of ways of getting rid of the ads and telemetry data gathering in Windows 10.
Remove Ads: https://www.howtogeek.com/269331/how-to-disable-all-of-windows-10s-built-in-advertising/
Remove/Stop Telemetry: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
There are others, but these will suffice.
Lastly, you can... erm... use Windows 10 LTSB. It is basically Windows 10 Enterprise w/o ANY of the BS. IMO this is what Windows 10 should have been by default.
> Automatic restarts can't be stopped.
Wrong
> For the spyware, you either waste a lot of time turning off settings and googling, or you download something like
If you're that allergic to telemetry, you might as well stop using all technology.
Yea, if you run that script you'll break the OS. Then you'll probably complain when you get crashes.
There's a simple all-in-one program called DisableWinTracking that can do it for you. It's a single .exe that works pretty well.
The author is a brother as well, /u/10se1ucgo.
As someone who runs Linux and Windows side by side, it's far easier to protect your privacy on Windows 10 than it is to do some of the most simple things on Linux. i.e. map network drives on startup, and setup firewall permissions come to mind.
BTW I recommend OOSU10 https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10
and for the super paranoid DWT https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases/
I use both. OOSU10 first to setup registry policies and what-not, then DWT to rip out everything that it can.
It technically shouldn't, as the license would be bound to the hardware. However, it doesn't strictly matter if it will get rid of the license. You can use this method to permemantly activate your hardware to Microsoft servers, so the license is bound to the hardware, or use some activation method over at /r/MSToolkit. I've done both methods and each one is absolutely fine.
If you're worried about losing your license, use the MSToolkit to backup your Windows 8.1 License somewhere, so you can use it again.
I just gotta say that LTSB is a dream. It is the way Windows should be... No Cortana, no updates messing with your entire system, fast and responsive, and no bloatware (Candy Crush and the like) installed. Heck, it doesn't even have the Microsoft Store, but that can be added with a quick PowerShell command. Some people may downvote, but I think the stability is better than Linux distros as well... I honestly haven't had any problems and have been running it on two machines for over a year. I don't do any gaming, though, so I can't help you there.
One more thing, if you're going to use LTSB, you might want to Disable Win Tracking to stop unnecessary tracking of your system. There's also a registry tweak that enables Photo Viewer (as, by default, it is switched off), but that's easily searched for online.
Depending on your system, I would also watch out for some of the drivers that Windows Update likes to install; one display driver messed up my Lenovo laptop, but that was rectified by uninstalling that driver and blocking it from installing again. Obviously, your mileage may vary, so don't worry about that!
Yes, more or less.
Run this: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases/ It should disable all tracking/telemetry data. You might want to tinker around in the settings, too, to get rid of Ads.
Then, remove all shitty apps nobody uses anyways via Powershell commands:
https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/uninstall-restore-windows-10-builtin-apps
> Microsoft also tends to ignore firewall rules and hosts entries when it's convenient for them
I don't think they ignore firewall rules (yet) but every application can ignore the hosts file. This is an officially supported flag in the DNS lookup API.
To stop telemetry, you can use https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
The only thing you can't easily stop is the uncontrolled updates and restarts, but I'm in the progress of writing an application that gives you back the manual update control as you had it in earlier Windows versions.
>If you are concerned about this privacy issues, but still have to use win10, then check W10 Privacy.
Or: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases
I use Win10 on my personal computer. There are some things I really like about it:
I think the start menu is still worse than windows 7, but over 8 its loads better.
Really coming from 8, I think there's no reason not to upgrade, except privacy concerns. I used this popular program to disable the tracking where I can and try not to think about it much, especially now that Microsoft has pretty much said they're not changing their minds on this.
>EDIT: For those of you that have been afflicted by the upgrade, and have concerns about privacy. You can use this to disable (most of?) Windows 10 user tracking.
LOL. "You have no idea who I am, but here, run this binary I wrote, and be sure to give it all of the permissions."
The wording implies it just runs shit at the command prompt, so why not just give people the commands needed?
Don't worry about performance. The process scheduling tweaks that MS made from 8.1 -> 10 won't really affect games unless your build is absolutely ancient, in which case it will improve. And you should be trying to stay up to date with operating systems anyways due to better designs of various systems within the OS that helps you stay secure. Especially against 0-day threats. Related to that, UAC is significantly more effective and less annoying in 10 than it was in Windows 7.
The return of the start menu is another nice touch removing the need for Classic Start.
The only tweak I might make, is device manager or system properties, set driver installation to be entirely manual. Windows 10 now tries to automatically handle display driver updates. Usually it does a good job of this. Sometimes it breaks some things due to a bug in the released drivers, and unless you disable this, rolling back to previous drivers will just keep getting overwritten by Windows update.
Source: Dolphin developer. We had a lot of headaches with Intel GPUs having broken drivers in 10 for awhile.
EDIT: Additionally, there are some privacy concerns that you can forcibly patch with this open source app:
https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
EDIT2: You should also know that if you're going to upgrade, do it sooner rather than later. Microsoft's free upgrade to 10 only lasts for a year after 10's release.
Win 10 is not as bad as its reputation implies. But that doesn't mean it's great. Reeks of 'designed for tablets' UI elements which bugs me.
The amount of telemetry it sends to MS is astronomical. You can use this to turn it off (needs the 2010 C++ redistributable to run).
What Open Source programs do you use? Maybe there's a small utility you'd like to improve?
You can find some "trending" Windows FOSS on alternativeto.net.
I for one would really like to see a FLOSS alternative to ShutUp10 as I don't trust O&O software. There's DisableWinTracking but it starts really slowly and seems to be badly optimized – Written in Python, though.
>but it's full of mobile phone levels of bullshit software that's difficult to remove
Which you basically never have to interact with if you don't want to and is easy to remove with a countless number of tools.
https://github.com/W4RH4WK/Debloat-Windows-10
>and sends tons more telemetry about what you're doing back to Microsoft than previous Windows versions
That's a bit of an illusion. More than Windows XP maybe, but you're kidding yourself if you think there's significantly less telemetry in Windows 7 and 8.
And again something pretty easy to mostly take care of.
Take a look at this guide.
Please don't follow it blindly and only do the steps you really want/need/know you can live without. Also I do not recommend doing it on an existing installation, use a clean install if possible. Also backups.
There's a section "No more forced updates".
That alone won't persist without some of the other steps, so read the guide.
Not entirely related but regardless something I recommend is running this.
If you must use Windows for something and privacy is a concern, run the DisableWindowsTracking tool and you'll be decent. It's still windows however.
Newke is pretty bad for me too, often drops below 250. I play on a pretty low res (1366x768) with everything set to low.
Overclocking my cpu had the most impact on my performance, gpu not that much.
I have done all these so far
cl_forcepreload 1
mat_queue_mode 2
fps_max 350
Use r_drawtracers_firstperson "0" if you can get used to it.
I didn't get any improvement from -high / -threads x / -nod3d9ex / -processheap launch commands.
I'm not familiar with your cpu so no idea if you should get better fps than me, good luck.
This guide was pretty helpful.
If you want to get rid of it, use DisableWinTracking and Spybot Anti-Beacon. Also you can find tutorials on how to disable automatic updates or set to update when you want to.
nowhere near as complete of feature set but heres and Open source win 10 blocker -- https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases
Edit : heres another open source prog, this one is a python script. https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
Non open source alternatives :
Here’s a screenshot I took of the Settings app's feedback & diagnostics options. As you can see there is not an option to provide Microsoft with no telemetry/device data (“Basic” is presumably the closest to none). The toggle-box is greyed out on my account simply because I'm using third-party software to block Microsoft data collection, although I have read — and been disappointed upon so doing — that data-mining is hard-coded into the OS.
This also means that Windows 10 will be a requirement.
If you're concerned about the privacy issues there are a number of ways to solve this in Windows 10 using some programs
Use either this open sourced program
https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking (click on releases for an .exe download)
Or this
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-4-windows-10
Or this
You should also note that Windows 10 (At least in the insider preview) had forced automatic driver updates, so if a GPU driver upgrade broke stuff, too bad. (Even if you installed GPU drivers through your manufacturer's website) I don't know if anybody has found a way to turn that off yet.
As for how it runs. I found it to run remarkably well. No noticeable regressions as far as I could tell (Other than being entirely out of control of driver stuff which has given us many headaches over at Dolphin Emulator). The UI is nice on desktops and laptops, and scales well on a tablet (You can make the start menu turn into "metro" if you need that). Ultimately I'm still using Windows 8.1 as my daily OS but I'll likely be tri-booting Windows 10 for Deus Ex and Mass Effect
I will look for the post (edit.. here: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking) but I think someone just released an open source tool to help kill a lot of the intrusive 'features' of Windows 10.
With that said, you need to threat model, and gauge risk according to the assets you want to protect... If you are okay with the constant possibility that Microsoft is collecting your information, then you've accepted that risk and you can move on.
However, if privacy is a big concern for you and your digital assets are worth protecting from Microsoft (again, understand your threat and the associated risk), I recommend simply not using Windows.
Another alternative may be to find and block all Microsoft IP addresses at the firewall level to disallow any outbound traffic to them, but again I cant really guarantee that this is effective. IP addresses change, MS is a big enough company to be able to go out an buy a new network block.
Additionally, consider the other threats. Most malware attacks are targeted toward Windows based platforms. Even it you aren't stupid enough to download a .zip.exe file, there is always the possibility of drive-by attacks and other browser based 0-days. That's the shit that scares me.
My solution is to simply not use Windows... The day I learned about the intrusive Win10 bullshit, I happily switched to debain desktop. My only Windows box on my network is a 2012 server (domain contoller) with NO internet access.. Even that will be replaced very soon.
Not sure what sense Wireshark makes when a lot of the telemetry send back is encrypted...
But because I am not a sheep I disabled most of it:
https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
If you are super paranoid you can also just block the connections in your router's firewall or a million other things.
But we are full circle to you claiming that Windows 10 is spyware while at the same time using both Google Assistant and Android which in turn collect way more data about you (and more sensitive ones) and have the potential of collecting even more sensitive private conversations on accident.
You can strip most of the bloatware and telemetry using tools like DisableWinTracking. LTSC and LTSB skip many non-security updates, if I'm not wrong.
I'm not a huge fan of SU O&O. It's closed source and requires admin permissions while making registry level changes to your machine. Nobody has any idea what it's actually doing to your machine.
I know Bazzell recommends it but it's one of the few recommendations from him that I'm not on board with. Even with software like this, telemetry isn't fully disabled anyway.
If you have to use something, use an open source application such as debotnet or the older DisableWinTracking
Vivaldi or Brave are better browsers in my opinion. Vivaldi can use Chrome extensions (adblockers) and Brave has a built in adblocker.
Also download an app on your laptop/computer to disable windows 10 tracking as well as any other "features" you don't like of theirs here:
In the event log I get the error
>Activation of app Microsoft.MSEsper_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.
I've tried:
I know DisableWinTracking gave issues with other Play Anywhere titles such as Forza Horizons 3 and Gears of War 4. I've reverted changed but there might be some lingering stuff. https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases
I have done all these so far
cl_forcepreload 1
mat_queue_mode 2
fps_max 400
Use r_drawtracers_firstperson "0" if you can get used to it.
I didn't get any improvement from -high / -threads x / -nod3d9ex / -processheap launch commands.
Remember that every setup is different and results may vary.
I'm not familiar with your cpu so no idea if you should get better fps than me, good luck.
This guide was pretty helpful.
It's really disrespectful the way it keeps installing apps and stuff you uninstall and disable after each update. You have to go back and make sure they didn't sneak some feature or telemetry in again. There was a really good disabler which someone had made that I have been using but it has not been updated for months and some of the features don't work anymore.
The other issue which I am not the only one to suffer from is "100% disk usage" problem which is very common. You can temporarily fix it but it keeps happening again once in a while. Windows 7 never had this problem.
I do like the interface and it's easy to use and navigate but the way MS treats people as inferior idiots who need every decision made for them is a mistake.
No problem, it is also advised if you are concerned with your privacy and the data that gets send to Microsoft to run tools like this for example.
https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
However take it as an advise and nothing more and be wise if you are wanting to run it. It can help in some occasions with your data usage :).
If you're stressed about your new build, install monitoring tools like MSI afterburner and something similar for your CPU while you run games.
Every new PC I get the first thing I do is remove the windows bloatwares, on W10 there's many but you can use this to do most of the job for you. Just don't block IP addresses if you use skype.
Second thing I do is run msconfig and disable most of automatic startups programs, steam, google, etc all have stuff that start with windows that I don't want to start with my PC
Well, if you're talking about OEM installed software, then there's decrap my computer.
If you want to remove a bunch of the preinstalled windows apps, then DisableWinTracking has you covered.
I mean, the source code is right there. You could also run that .py-file directly with the Python-interpreter, if you doubt the compiled binary.
And well, there's not much difference to just the commands, as most people won't understand the commands either. Might as well put it into a nicer package, which then some of the more knowledgeable people can look over and confirm that everything is alright...
I use DisableWinTracking. It removes those silly trackers as well as removes some default applications if you don't use them. I personally don't use OneDrive, Xbox etc. so it removes the applications and simplified the device.
My upgrade from 8.1 to 10 on my computer was fine. I followed that up with using this - https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases
Because I don't like tracking.
BUT my co-worker bought 5 laptops (cheap ones for his kids), all running 8.1 He tried to do the upgrade to 10 on 2 of them. Both of them bricked the computer and failed to finish the install. He had to reformat and purchase a windows 10 key (Microsoft and ASUS would not help). So failing to upgrade can cause serious issues. My understanding is that this happens rarely.
Hey, i wouldn't recommend using closed-source software that "stops windows 10 tracking". Try this one : https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases
You can look for others as well but this one covers most of Windows updates to telemetry etc..
Haha, I refuse to use Cortana because it always tells me about all this tracking information before I can use it.
I also disabled all the privacy and tracking settings in the menu for Windows 10. I use Tor religiously when browsing online.
I like this program. I'm always worried about what random programs do also but you can look at the sourcecode since it is github.
There's a way to block all incoming/outgoing traffic to specific locations with your router, I'm sure there's a guide somewhere if you Google...
Edit: here's a simple program to do the trick https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
>How are you?..
better, yeah. quite a bit actually. a few months back i hit the point where i was thinking about jumping in front of a train, im kinda past that, so i guess that counts for better, right? :)
this is the tool my buddy linked me. works like a charm.
Windows 10 collects telemetry data.
Basically, it collects stuff about what you generally do with Windows (for example, Cortana, pretty much probably the same with other personal assistants, too.), and uses it to improve their services. (That's what they say about it, not me.)
Google also collects telemetry data.
Windows 7 also collects telemetry data. (Tabloid journalists, where were you?)
Almost all companies do it.
It's mostly anonymous, non-personal stuff that's collected, but the thing is that, in most cases, you can't fully turn it off. (For Windows 10, I would recommend to download this little application.)
Yes, companies, we understand that it's anonymous information, but we still don't want you to collect it.
But those companies don't understand that, do they?
The Microsoft privacy policy is written in a very bad and confusing way. (Aren't most privacy policies like that? I mean, take a look at this. You can't really understand fully what it actually means, and you'd probably resort to all sorts of conspiracy theories to explain it, right?)
Or maybe people just don't bother reading the whole of it. (Almost nobody reads EULAs, right?)
Here's a portion of the privacy policy :
"We collect content of your files and communications when necessary to provide you with the services you use. This includes: the content of your documents, photos, music or video you upload to a Microsoft service such as OneDrive. It also includes the content of your communications sent or received using Microsoft services..." (emphasis mine)
Basically, like almost all companies do, Microsoft collects data about stuff you store in Microsoft online services.
So it doesn't access your local files, like all the tabloid journalists made you think.
The scripts are target at advanced users and are still in beta state. Generally speaking I wish we wouldn't need anything like it and could just tweak the settings in a reasonable manner in windows itself.
I recommend checking out https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking . This should not break anything.
You may find this useful: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
It can uninstall a lot of the apps that you may not want, as well as disabling all privacy related things. I've used it myself many times.
Now i' know i'm going to get some down votes for this but i love this tool. Even though its free/third party it does a great job and has explanations for what it does. http://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10
This is also a good one. https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
We don't use the app store. Users can download programs that are business approved/have good trust rating with out us. We turned removed onedrive "as far as we can tell" i say that because you never know how baked in it is. But in the end windows 7/8 does same thing as 10 whatever.
If you're tech savvy enough to find and uninstall specific updates, you're tech savvy enough to run any number of batch scripts that disable that stuff in Windows 10.
One example: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
In short, they're using Cortana and the whole OS to "collect data from you for things like advertisements and shit", but there's more to that than meets the eye. They also "got full permission to delete any 'suspicious' programs form your PC aka pirated programs", among other things.
Sure, there's some guys who are making scripts to delete these things from the system, but I don't trust MS anymore. I can even go to Windows 8.1, but I won't go to W10.
This one did it for me:
https://github.com/W4RH4WK/Debloat-Windows-10
Adds the domains to HOSTS and firewall, just in case. Plus a TON of other nice features. And it's open source. Seriously if you want Win10 but hate the privacy stuff (like me) check it out.
This one's nice too: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
Looks rather questionable to me... and what about this? http://prntscr.com/8a9psr I don't know, doesn't seem all that legit :// The most legit alternative that exists as of now is this : https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases/ It's free and open source, so you can check the code if you don't think it's trustworthy.
I suspect the OP on pastebin ripped off from https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking , or he ripped it off from someone else :-P
Edit: clarify who ripped off whom
Oh man you didn't actually have to do that haha
Go here: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases/
It's an EXE file you can use anywhere. Just right click and run as administrator.
Tell him not to worry too much about such things. Windows 10 is sending more information about your computer usage to Microsoft servers than Windows 7 does but you can deactivate that pretty easily.
https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
https://github.com/builtbybel/debotnet
Windows 10 has better performance than Windows 7 and in 2 years Windows 7 will receive no security updates no more.
Try this Script:https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/issues/48#issuecomment-228178072
Edit the $packageBase variable to the name of your game.
If you don't know the exact package name, then open a powershell prompt and try to get it with:
"Get-AppxPackage *Forza*"
I had a similiar problem with MSFS (same error code) because of a broken install and this was the only way to remove it for me.
Try this Script:
https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/issues/48#issuecomment-228178072
Edit the $packageBase variable to "Microsoft.FlightSimulator".
I had a similiar problem with MSFS (same error code) because of a broken install and this was the only way to remove it for me.
I use this: DisableWinTracking
It isn't perfect, and it's bs that we even need tools like this; but it is better than nothing.
Every time I boot into windows I die a little bit.
LOL. There are good tools for blocking win10 spying. Spybot antibeacon 1.6 (make sure to use 1.6, not the newer ones) and ucgo win10 spy blocker https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases
http://www.security-projects.com/?Patriot_NG this is good for catching everything, including buffer overflow attacks and kali/backtrack 5 attacks (Metasploit)
Personally, the first thing I do when I install Windows.
1) I disable all hidden tracking services and apps https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases
2) using a custom host file to manually block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, counters, hijackers
3) Windows 10 debloater https://github.com/Sycnex/Windows10Debloater
I had this issue. Not sure if it's the same for everyone, but did you by chance ever use the disable windows tracking program? I re-downloaded it and ran the "revert" option. That fixed my issue.
When you're installing Windows it'll give you the option to wipe everything. You can delete everything with Linux, but there's no need.

When installing Windows, just make sure to press "No" to as many features as possible. Make sure to disable Cortana.

You can download DisableWinTracking from here. On it you can tick:
Then click "Go!". Telemetry uses a lot of processing power when installing new programs, so it's worth getting rid of.

The whole thing is no problem for me at all, by the way. I don't have much going on at the moment :)
This is a tool claiming to deactivate the tracking (I used another script I think, but I have to figure out where I got it from as it is on another computer): https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
And uninstall everything you don't want on your computer.
>Wird sicher sehr nervig da allen Telemetrieramsch rauszurupfen.
Hab selbst kein Windows 10 und es daher noch nicht selbst machen müssen, aber es gibt da ein paar vielversprechende Tools:
Windows 10's telemetry is pretty stupid; they're easily blockable with the help of tools, but if you want to completely block it, you can't really use any Microsoft apps like Windows or Outlook as the requests will get blocked.
There's for example this if you want libre software: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
I don't recommend changing the bios stuff unless you decide later that you need to.
I do recommend getting these two links and disable some of the windows 10 stuff. https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases https://www.howtogeek.com/265027/how-to-disable-cortana-in-windows-10/
I recommend buying Controller Companion on Steam and have it start with Windows.
I recommend setting up the save folder settings of whatever emulator you use with a cloud drive like Onedrive or Dropbox so you can have cloud saving of emulated games. Very easy to do with Retroarch.
I recommend getting an 8 foot long usb-c cord. Some people are afraid to play while it's charging, but mine's been fine for 9 months.
Dishonored is playable, but the performance isn't great. You might be able to find ways to tweak config files or put in lower quality textures to make it run better. https://youtu.be/smwZMxRVw6E
An easy way to install some common software all at once: https://ninite.com/ (has options for Steam, Chrome, Skype, 7-Zip, and loads more)
PC Decrapifier is alright at getting rid of OEM bloatware (although full reinstall is better imo)
Disable Windows 10 Tracking if you want to remove the telemetry, preinstalled UWP apps etc
Now you have deleted one thing you know of. What about the other 20 things?
People developed a github tool dedicated to deactivate Windows 10 tracking:
i played blitz beta - it was literally unplayable for me - like it crashed on 50% of the matches.
I too own Halo Wars 2 and so far the game works good. The big negatives: Terrible FPS in Multiplayer; You cannot change the Language (Game is tied to System language).
Of the two problems the most annoying one for me is the language thing.
Specs: i7 5820K; 32GB RAM; GTX 1080; Game is installed on SSD; Windows 10 Professional
"Dont spy on me Microsoft"-Stuff i used: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases
to disable everything except Calendar, XBOX(you need this to play the game and to disable windows DVR), "Alarm and Clock". Additionally I disabled Cortana and Web Searches via GPO.
Still don't want to be low hanging fruit! There is a good app someone made on disabling all of win10s tracking stuff - https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases I recommend downloading and using this whether or not your using dnms!!
But tails is very easy to use, the hardest but one of the more important parts is probably setting up a persistence volume, it's ideal for the dnms because it already has tor, a pgp client and electrum for your bitcoin wallet. Honestly, spend as much time as you need to figure tails out because it could be the thing between you and someone running tor on win10.
I somewhat agree that tails for personal buyers may be a lot but you cannot overkill opsec. And anytime there is an upgrade it will prompt you and you can download it straight away and keep all your previous data.
>Get-AppxPackage *xboxapp* | Remove-AppxPackage
alternatively, you can use DisableWinTracking.
https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
Well, first off it doesnt mean that W7 and W8 wont work. It just means if you do not have W10, you wont get the full benefit of either of the CPUs. W10 feels just like W7 with a Metro style to it. And you can disable all the "spying shit" that W10 has.
> Many of the privacy and cost concerns can be disabled, including predictive browsing, searching by voice with Cortana, certain types of usage/bug reporting, and update sharing.
All of these 'features' can be disabled through third party software such as Spybot anti-beacon which simply blocks the domains that windows connects to, and an open source utility creatively named Disable Windows Tracking
I use disablewintracking for disabling all the Win10 tracking stuff.
Works well. But if you select all the 'block even more domains' option, you'll have to go to your hosts file and delete the skype entries to allow picture sending to work. (You can exclude them in the app, but I haven't got it to work properly).
I have been using Win 10 for more than 5 months now. I would say its its better than Win 8, especially for gaming. bcoz win 8 will show a warning saying "Low on memory" when playing games in fullscreen with resolution set to lower than the native resolution, Win 10 doesn't have that problem. I like it more than win 7 for some reasons like "Win + x menu".
You can also turn off the updates with applications like "Shutup10", Disable Tracking.
But to be honest i have formatted by pc more times in this past 5 months, i don't know why but win 10 have crashed many times, sometimes after hard restart, one time after uninstalling metro apps, one time for disable telemetry. But, i am still using win 10.
For Windows 10? That depends on how much you want Microsoft tracking you :)
There are a bunch of tools that disable this stuff for you, such as: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
Generally, I prefer not to disable too much stuff as these days Windows is pretty good at not using resources for things you actually don't use - but the tracking is safe to disable.
>I mean, the source code is right there. You could also run that .py-file directly with the Python-interpreter, if you doubt the compiled binary.
You have no way of knowing if that version of the source was used to build that binary.
>And well, there's not much difference to just the commands, as most people won't understand the commands either. Might as well put it into a nicer package, which then some of the more knowledgeable people can look over and confirm that everything is alright...
So then dump them into a batch file, which is easy to verify.
If you're concerned about privacy I would recommend checking out this nifty open-source application called DisableWinTracking on GitHub. The tool makes it easy to block most of the more concerning privacy issues. If you're really down the tin-foil hat route you would probably need to manually block everything though. DisableWinTracking doesn't cover all privacy aspects of Windows 10 that some people discuss.
Common sense + the built in Windows antivirus are all you really need. Although having the active monitoring that comes with a better AV won't hurt if you're unsure. As for Win 10 BS, I use Disable Win Tracking.
There are a number of services that attempt to disable/block the various tracking features. I'm not using Windows 10 so I can't suggest any of them from experience, but privacytools.io links to this one, so it is probably good.
I'm a Mac user, and I set up a Windows 8 PC for my son. There may be other apps, but I found this one; http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/destroy_windows_10_spying.html
There is also; https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases to be helpful
Just remember to revert these changes before running any updates for the OS.
Yep, im not sure if I am allowed to link this here
Disablewintracking is a program that uninstalls all pre-installed windows apps that you can't uninstall yourself, also turns of all tracking options.
I think you're talking about this handy little program: https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking
.exe here
The biggest problem I have with virtual desktops on win10 is that you can't make a grid. You can only switch desktops left and right, this doesn't work very well with 9 desktops.
Also dissapointing how Powershell isn't the main CLI yet, no native package manager and no native SSH.
Also check this out for privacy settings.
If you value your privacy, don't install Windows 10. Failing that, if for some bizarre reason you 'must' install it, DisableWinTracking is as good as any.
You might find Comparison of Windows 10 Privacy tools useful and don't forget to check the Windows 10 forum at my digital life.
Honestly, just update to Windows 10 and use this tool called DisableWinTracking to disable or block all the tracking along with a few other options available. This is the same tool that was posted on here (Reddit) by the creator a few months back.
Remember though, all companies are tracking or collecting data from you in one way or another. Google does this too just like anyone else, Facebook and so forth.
This one's pretty solid, recommended it to a few friends and used it myself in a VM. Can't comment on long term effects as my primary OS is RHEL I just use Windows for video games and that's it. I read removing some of the Windows apps will cause certain updates to fail YMMV.
I installed Win 10 for testing yesterday and it is seriously not even half as bad as I thought. It is not anywhere close to being as bad as Windows 8, and you seriously won't see any of the tablet UI unless you open it up yourself. Also, you can uninstall most apps, just use this little program, which also disables tracking. https://github.com/10se1ucgo/DisableWinTracking/releases Then just install Start10 or Classicshell and it is completely usable.
