I'm really looking forward to Homeworld Remastered Collection.
I dont care what anyone says this is one of my top 5 games ever.
I know Homeworld is getting remastered

>Crafted with the assistance and guidance of the original creators as well as the help of a passionate fan community, Homeworld Remastered Collection introduces Relic's acclaimed space strategy games Homeworld and Homeworld 2 to modern players and operating systems using modern advances in graphics rendering technology. Homeworld Remastered Collection includes updated high-res textures and models, new graphical effects, and support for HD, UHD, and 4K resolutions. Homeworld’s original audio and video artists have also recreated cinematic scenes in beautiful high fidelity.
>Homeworld Remastered Collection uses Homeworld and Homeworld 2’s original source audio to create a stunning new mix of effects and music. On top of that, multiplayer for both games has been combined into one centralized mode that will allow you to interact with other players like never before. This collection also includes archival versions of Homeworld Classic and Homeworld 2 Classic, preserving the purest form of the original releases with compatibility for modern operating systems.
>The Homeworld Remastered Collection will soon be available for pre-order on leading PC digital platforms -- keep checking back for more updates and media!
I am a huge Homeworld fan, and when I first heard Gearbox bought the IP, I was extremely skeptical. However, I've noticed that since the acquisition, it seems that they're really trying to prove that they aren't half-assing this. The guys at Gearbox have repeatedly expressed that they huge respect for the IP, which is why they bought it in the first place. Moreover, by what could be called a stroke of luck, they are working with the former Relic devs who worked on Homeworld and have even given them financial assistance to work on Homeworld: Shipbreakers (originally called Hardware: Shipbreakers, before Gearbox gave them permission to use the IP) and will likely be working on Homeworld 3 together as well. The Collector's Edition of Homeworld Remastered is also shaping up nicely. You'll just have to take my word for it when I say that I'm not one for hype, but this might actually be shaping up to be awesome.
Moreover, they're also re-releasing the original games (which you get for free if you get the Remastered Edition), so even if for some reason the remaster does suck, you can just get the original, but optimized to run properly on newer systems.
(Side note: There's really nothing new revealed in OP's post. Basically just an additional confirmation that they were targeting 2014, which we've known for a while now.)
I love homeworld. It's getting an HD update which should generate some interest in an android port. The camera controls are really important - those look to be pretty good in the demo. pinch to zoom, swipe to rotate both good.
Box selection is not 100% necessary - i honestly think you could play the game without it.
The most useful selection tools would be:
- double-tap to select all similar units (e.g. double tap a scout to select all scouts),
- have the ability to assign groups/hotkeys (e.g. group 1, group 2)
- equivalent of shift-clicking to pick individual units and add them to a selection
- combine the above to add groups of units together
that would be good enough for most purposes. That would require a UI adaptation but it would make it playable imo.
Higher level play would require the ability to mess about with formations and stances quickly, and also to be able to assign units to "guard" other units (e.g. repair frigate to follow a corvette wall, or resource controller to follow 2x harvesters). That could be fiddly.
Some units have special commands, such as salvage corvettes and minelayers. There might be some kind of catch-all command that you could use for all of these.

FYI, near the end of this month, Homeworld Remastered Edition is coming out! Pre-order on Steam for a small sale. I'm super excited to replay this game, the soundtrack is amazing, and of course so is the gameplay.
Gearbox brought the rights 6 months ago.. maybe more. and said before they made a homeworld 3 or restarted the franchise, they were gonna just do 1 and 2 again with the latest tech and graphics.
they have a website for it
I scoured the entire source code of the website looking for some way to subscribe to email list updates for pre-orders! Nothing but the generic feedback email (which I emailed, asking for mailing list or preorders, and they haven't responded). Gah - want that 12" so bad.
The Homeworld games are very highly regarded and got a nice remastered collection release a couple of years ago http://www.homeworldremastered.com/ they're quite accessible games with excellent presentation and amazing stories.
My wishlist includes some older games:
World in Conflict http://worldinconflict.uk.ubi.com/ Absolutely incredible game at the time, and I can only dream what it would be like to play in VR with enough room to move about in.
Test Drive Unlimited 2 http://www.testdriveunlimited2.com/ Open world driving with challenges and drop-in races, set on sunny Ibiza
Homeworld Remastered http://www.homeworldremastered.com/ True 3D RTS, as in your units move through all 3 dimensions. Would be incredible with pinch grab zoom move and rotate controls.
For those not in the know, over the last year we've had the release of Homeworld Remastered Collection and the unofficial prequel Shipbreakers became Homeworld: Shipbreakers as they were granted the use of the IP by Gearbox.
They just announced this was available for preorder on Steam today. http://www.homeworldremastered.com They've also got a new IP called Battleborn coming and I know they were working on a new BIA game called Furious Four. Personally I think game companies do best when they focus on one or two franchises at a time.
I believe it would have been the other way, my friend.
i.e. The Naglfar was likely inspired by the Homeworld mothership.
Homeworld release: 1999
Eve Online release: 2003
Can't wait for the Homeworld Remastered Edition
For the day the graphics were spectacular. But now, yeah, they don't hold up. I even find it difficult to play due to the graphics. It's a lot easier to just watch the walkthrough videos anymore if you want the Homeworld experience.
However they are making a Homeworld remastered edition which should be awesome. :)
You seem to be looking for an action game, but I'll just throw in the Homeworld series. It's an RTS game, but you can move your units in 3D space, you can easily be flanked from above or below which adds an interesting element to the game.
Both Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2 has recently been remastered: http://www.homeworldremastered.com
Thanks for writing this. I've been obsessed with spaceship classes ever since Homeworld. If anybody else finds this article interesting, play Homeworld. Not only is it considered one of the best PC strategy games ever made, but a remastered version of the game was just released.
Wonderful story, too.
Homeworld was the shit though, I always thought of EVE to be a spiritual successor to that game. Even the Minmatar dread looks like the Mothership, and some Caldari designs look very Vagyr from HW2.
For those that don't know, there is a remastered edition coming up http://www.homeworldremastered.com/. It looks a lot like EVE
Homeworld is amazing! They're sorta remaking it (same game, better graphics): http://www.homeworldremastered.com/
Apparently they won't be re-mastering Cataclysm (which I actually enjoyed more, mainly just due to the interface improvements, but I liked the creepy story, too). Apparently they lost the source code.......
They're working on that new release of the Homeworld franchise I guess.
(BTW, I'm an Eagle Scout, but red lightsabers are the coolest and everyone knows it, deep down inside).
