Nitronic Rush, an action racing game with a kick-ass procedural soundtrack and a tron-esqe art style. Built from the ground up in C++. Your car can change angles midair, boost with a litteral rocket on the back (No joke, if you get the angle right you can fly with it), and on the non-hardcore levels you have WINGS. They're trying to fund a spiritual successor on kickstarter, and I don't usually advertise, but they need to get funded. Please.
Also, if you weren't sure about if you want to play/spend money on this game yet please play the original (student project). It can be a little buggy on some people's systems, but it's a great game.
Nitronic Rush is a pretty fun indie racing game, gameplay is reminiscent of the rush games, and can be pretty fun for a while.
As garyyo pointed out though, Trackmania is probably my favorite multiplayer racing game, I love the idea of all cars being the same and the only way to beat someone is by simply outperforming them.
Distance and Talos Principle at those prices are an absolute steal.
Both games have unique and memorable settings and music that fits both universes perfectly. These games are worth saying "fuck it" and buying them (at full price) even if you're relunctant.
Also Distance has a completely free predecessor called Nitronic Rush which is incredibly good in its own right and worth checking out. Here's a link to the download page - http://nitronic-rush.com/download-game/
As an extension to this, if you want to get a feel for it, download Nitronic Rush, it's a student game from the developers of Distance before they made it, its got all the core gameplay from Distance with an awesome soundtrack. (its free too)

Have you ever played Nitronic Rush? If you haven't, do that. It's free and so much fun. And the music is just awesome, too (and also free).
Could I suggest Nitronic Rush? It's a free futuristic race/survival game very much in the spirit of F-Zero and the like, with excellent Tron-style visuals and a great soundtrack.
It's not anything new and revolutionary, but if you want a fresh and updated take on the race games of old, it should be right up your alley.
My case for those of you still on the fence about backing this kickstarter: Nitronic Rush, the student project that inspired Distance. It is unbelievably fun to play!
Distance. It's in alpha right now but you can preorder the beta here: http://survivethedistance.com/
It is basically a "spiritual successor" to Nitronic Rush. It was one of their college projects I believe. Free game you can download here: http://nitronic-rush.com/
Anyway, I think your biggest mistake is assuming Kickstarter is a store. It's not. It's a cultural investment. It's saying "I really want you to make this exist, here's funding."
Calling it a scam is just stupid. You can only feel scammed by it if you foolishly assume it's a place to buy things.
It isn't a scam in the same way Pope Julius II wouldn't have been "scammed" if Michelangelo decided to get lazy painting the Sistine Chapel.
However, I do see Kickstarter-style funding as a potential alternative to intellectual property.
My case for those of you still on the fence about backing this kickstarter: Nitronic Rush, the student project that inspired Distance. It is unbelievably fun to play!
Distance! It sounds perfect for you. I couldn't think of the name, eventually I found a free Digipen student game called Nitronic Rush, which looked very similar to what I remembered, turns out the team went on to make Distance.
Also, perhaps Drift Stage? Not quite as on the nose as Distance is, but it has that old school FZero stylings.
Try Nitronic Rush
Steam not required. Free. It is developed by students at DigiPen. Pretty cool & satisfying driving visuals.
IMO, yes. Even if it's in Early Access at the moment, it's definitly worth trying out for the price it's at right now.
If you're still skeptical, try it's spiritual predecessor, Nitronic Rush, which is fantastic in it's own right, first, and then buy Distance if you want more.
Just a head's up: Not providing any info on what game you're referring to until you click through is kind of bad form.
From the site:
>Survival driving game developed by students at DigiPen
>Nitronic Rush is an experimental survival driving game. Using the car’s many abilities (including boost, wings, and jump), avoid obstacles that the city throws at you. In many ways the game is a tribute to racing games of the 1990s but with fresh graphics, audio, and gameplay.
It's a student indie game from late 2011 with quite a few downloads and awards. A commentor on Destructoid called it "Rush 2049 meets Tron". It's free, so why not.
Do you mean Nitronic Rush? http://nitronic-rush.com/
If so, these are the same devs, Distance is their follow-up game, polished and touched-up.
Unfortunately, the team has disbanded a while ago and everyone is going to go their own way :(
/r/AM2R
GZDoom (the original Doom 1 and 2 game files are not freeware, but the demo for Doom 1 is)
I've also been hoarding games on Twitch Prime (included if you have an Amazon Prime membership, which many people do), Epic Games Store (giving away a free game every 1-2 weeks for the past several months), GOG (occasional giveaways), and Humble Store (occasional giveaways redeemable on Steam). These are not freeware games per se as they revert back to paid status once the giveaways are over, but I've gotten a lot of mileage out of them.
I'm big into emulating old games, which are generally not freeware (although it's rare for most people to acquire games by buying and dumping cartridges). But if you want to keep it on the legal straight and narrow, there are a lot of free homebrew games for various old platforms that can be played in emulation. If you get the PPSSPP emulator (free), it has a built in interface to download homebrew PSP games.
If this is your kind of game, go checkout Nitronic Rush - They have released a Nitronic Rush 1 which is super great and well done(also free on the site), with Tron like colors and boosters kinda like rocket league. Their new game they are also are showing off on their website is not yet done, so don't buy it as there is no where near as many maps as there should be for the price.
Distance is amazing. If you want to give it a try before buying download Nitronic Rush, its spiritual predecessor. Distance plays almost the same as Nitronic Rush but with a lot more polish.
This is incredible news! I've been waiting for Distance since it's announcement (that was a long time ago, wasn't it?).
I remember playing Nitronic Rush for the first time and thinking "Woah, this could be pretty fun". Then days later I realized it's one of those games where when you play it enough, you get on another level.
Like Rhythm games, where you start on Easy and think "This is cool" then weeks later when you're playing on Expert you think "I knew nothing! Easy was hardly even a game!"
It's the first time a racing game has ever done that to me. I even have a hard time calling it a racing game because it's something else. I just don't know what that "something else" is called.
Ninjaedit: For anyone that wants to play Nitronic Rush, the (free) ancestor of this game:
It's free, just a small arcade-like racing game with scoreboards and such. There's no Multiplayer (but IIRC they patched in a multiplayer-ghost-thing), but it's fun enough alone. Once you beat the normal levels, please try the advanced ones. That is when the real game starts.
> How fleshed out are the driving mechanics? Is it just accelerate, brake and steer or can you drift, attack your opponents in some way, etc.?
You can accelerate, boost, jump, roll in the air (which is needed to reach walls to ride in the more complex levels), and even fly. No drifting though.
Check out Nitronic Rush, Distance is pretty much a much more complete and (to be) polished version of it.
For something more unconventional, try Nitronic Rush. To describe it in one sentence: Tron-inspired over-the-top obstacle course time trials in a flying car. It was made as a student project, and is completely free.
Unfortunately at this rate it appears the kickstarter will not be funded! This kickstarter needs reddit's help. If the video isn't enough to convince you, I'd highly recommend playing Nitronic Rush (its free!) Even if you're not interested in funding Distance, its a blast to play.
You can find Nitronic Rush here: http://nitronic-rush.com/
Be it BlitzMax, GameMaker, Multimedia Fusion... you name it, I agree with the general sentiment in this post and I believe the problem is simple: ego.
For some reason, it seems it's not really programming, you are "cheating" if you use such tools. Like: "You use that drag and drop GameMaker thing? shame on you for not doing the real thing and learning proper C++".
Fun fact is: those tools are perfectly adequate for the 90% of 2D games out there and have quite good performance. And I care more about having fun with your game than how many lines of code you wrote for that great memory allocator.
Random trivia: The latest game I played (which is free btw) is Nitronic Rush. When the game starts there is a prominent screen with a message that goes something along the lines: "And we made our own 3D engine for this all by ourselves".
While impressive, all I care is: is the game fun?
Nitronic Rush is free and DRM Free. Can't really go wrong, and I had a blast with it. It's more of a time-trials obstacle course racing game than a competitive one, but it's definitely worth taking a look at.
I just remembered, there is a free game that you might consider to be cyberpunk: 404Sight
And there's the free racing game Nitronic Rush which has become Distance (not free).
Awesome. I'm excited to pick it up if it goes on sale for a good price. What would you pay for it? Also, if you haven't played Nitronic Rush you can download it here. It's totally worth playing and it might be cool to see this game's roots. The Devs made this at DigiPen and Distance is their finalized version of the concept.
Check out Nitronic Rush, a free racing game that is a ton of fun. The 'hardcore' tracks in the game require flipping, riding walls, and other tricks to get to the end, and when you're nailing every maneuver it feels great. They are also making a spiritual sequel 'Distance' that I hope will live up to the original when it comes out.
Distance. It's still in early access, so if you're not sure try out the prototype, Nitronic Rush - it's free and it'll give you an idea of what to expect.
Speaking of racing games, Distance is time attack based and has split screen! (Just make sure you have 4 XBox controllers)
Edit: Nitronic Rush is the predecessor of distance, and its free! No MP though...
And for the fans of the Rush series there is a spiritual successor called Distance that is in Early Access but looks like it has potential. If you want to try their previous game check out Nitronic Rush for free.
You're going to want to take a look at the free rocket-car racing game Nitronic Rush: http://nitronic-rush.com/
Here's a video to see what it's all about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPkFXO7tumk&t=1m31s
You might like the free game Nitronic Rush then. There's also a new version out on Steam called Distance. You should definitely check those out
Have you played Nitronic Rush?
I think you'd appreciate it. It's free. It's an audio/visual stunt racing game - the music is based on what you're doing in game and it's one hell of a soundtrack. If you've got a controller + PC give it a spin.
If you want to get a feel of this game, try the free predecessor, http://nitronic-rush.com/
I loved nitronic and backed Distance on kickstarter, I am in the credits :D
Distance is amazing despite being unfinished. If you played and enjoyed the free original version of the game (http://nitronic-rush.com/ ) Then distance is a no brainer, so much upcoming content and user created content. Most of all just a fun game with a interesting concept.
After my second PS3 broke and I gave up on consoles, I've been getting my fill with a PSP emulator and wipeout pulse. Looks pretty damn glorious at 1080p considering the target platform but I agree, it's been too long. I've got my eye on Distance (by the guys who made who made Nitronic Rush at Digipen, well worth a play!) but I've not played it yet.
Here are some neat free ones!
Hearthstone is very fun, and very easy to get into.
Super Crate Box is also a blast, and quite simple.
Nitronic Rush is fan-damn-tastic.
If you want to download Steam, there are more free games than you can shake a stick at on there.
If you liked some of racers of the 90's like rollcage and wipeout this may be of interest to you. http://survivethedistance.com/
Its a spiritual successor to a university project called nitronic rush. You can download that for free here http://nitronic-rush.com/download-game/
Nitronic Rush, what with all the techno-dubstep dynamic soundtrack and whatnot.
Download the game (Free, includes a feakin' flying Delorean).
Soundtrack Playlist (Neon Skyway is my favourite, but the 6 first ones are the most representative of the style).
want free games? here (non-steam)
its a breaking bad game. dont play it unless you've seen the show
http://www.mediafire.com/?t2zu8bw4n2tlq2b
here's a free racing game:
weird skating game:
Looks good, but I hope the soundtrack isn't so "trance"y like the one in the video.
For games this type of game, the music is so much of the game, like in the Wipeout series. In Wipeout they generally stuck to "big beat" house and oftentimes "Jungle", then getting more progressive as the series aged. I still think Wipeout II had one of the best game soundtracks ever put together, it had so many big name dj's/songs it was crazy..
I'm only saying this because I've played a number of Wipeout clones and it was really hard to get mindlessly deep into the game because the music was sub par (they use techno, but way too trance-y techno, put's you to sleep).
On another note, here's one game I thought was pretty cool, not exactly wipeout (more like Rush 2049) but the music was pretty damn good, and it's free!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNuSvuzPL10&feature=player_embedded
I'm sure someone else could do better (I'm just a student) but to start you could take a look at Nitronic Rush. Student game, made from scratch (engine, tools, levels, art, music etc.)
Slightly unrelated question, how much per copy would you save if you make your game available for download via BitTorrent instead of, say, Steam or Epic? The only game I know which offered this as a main means for downloading is a 2011 game named Nitronic Rush (BTW it later become Distance by Refract Studios, which is still my favorite game) http://nitronic-rush.com/download-game/
The game you're looking for is Nitronic Rush. This game is something of a masterpiece, and the developers were kind enough to release it for free.
It's somewhat old, so don't expect any fancy graphics, but the gameplay and soundtrack are absolutely bonkers.
Let's reverse the formula. Some other sport, but rocket cars.
Pentathlon, but rocket cars.
Curling, but rocket cars.
Parkour, but rocket cars. Wait, that's Nitronic Rush/Distance. Fuck, Nitronic Rush was such a blast. I need to actually play Distance.
Another free arcade style racer is Nitronic Rush. This is more like Rush but with Tron style graphics and music. Only one enemy, a computer that creates deadly obstacles which you must fly or jump through. Also there is a stunt mode.
It's successor is sold on Steam: Distance
You could check out Distance if you want another driving game, although that's more of a survival style game. It's still in early access, and if you're unsure about it you can play their free previous game Nitronic Rush. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a fun kart racer as well.
For other casual platformers Splasher, Shovel Knight, Guacamelee, others. If you want I can link you my steam library so you can see if anything catches your eye. I play a lot of single player games in general.
You're probably thinking of Distance, which is the successor to the free game Nitronic Rush.
I haven't played Distance yet, but Nitronic is one of my all-time favorites and I don't even like racing games. It's amazing. Parkour at 300MPH.
Nitronic Rush was a student project at Digipen. It's basically a racing survival/time trial game. It had a short campaign and then a lot of extra tracks for you to race through but it was all single player. Some of the team that made that game went on after they graduated to make Distance. It's still in development but is pretty much done. It has multiplayer and all the other bells and whistles. Both are heavily inspired by SF Rush 2049 with wings for flying and a lot of aerial sections and shortcuts everywhere. Amazing music in both games. I love just putting on my headphones and jamming out while playing some Distance.
You should play Nitronic Rush and/or Distance. Nitronic Rush is free, Distance is EA on Steam and is the spiritual successor to Nitronic Rush. They're more traditional racing games that have similar car physics to Rocket League, and may help you transition your skills over a bit easier.
It's free too....I have soooo many hours into that game stays challenging no matter.
It's spiritual Sequel Distance is good too but not as good as the first one in my opinion.
Nitronic Rush (free btw) and it's sequel Distance
Music changes with your driving, has a procedural track generator, stunt mode reminiscent of Rush, and amazing graphics. Has a quick story mode too.
Nitronic Rush, by a mile. The creators built the game (including developing their own engine) from the ground up. They made a follow-up called Distance which you can purchase on Steam, but Nitronic Rush remains free and full of content.
I'm not a fan of car/racing games, nor am I usually one to go for games with high difficulty, but this game has all those things and I still love the heck out of it.
A close second would be Geoguessr, which you play in-browser. It's a really cool idea that implements Google Maps and Google StreetView in a neat way. I've played puzzle/mystery games before, but nothing made me feel like a bonafide detective as much as Geoguessr.
I've built games from scratch in 6 months with a team of 5 people in college. I mean it wasn't great but if it was 10 people with more experience and we had a year we'd be fine.
It doesn't take decades to build a game from scratch it just depends on what you want to make.
I'm not counting drivers of course but I'm even counting libraries since we weren't allowed to use any.
In fact a team of 10 or so people from my school did make a game in about a year from scratch and it was pretty great:
They ended up making a spiritual successor called Distance.
Check out Nitronic Rush, it's in fact a school project (created from scratch, game engine and everything) and the precursor to Distance (your second edit, the first commercial game by those guys), and at least as fun to play, if not even better!
This is one of the most exciting and fun racing games, I'd even argue one of the best games out there! And it's free!
Tell me if you like it! I loved it so much, I even threw money at their Kickstarter for Distance (I belive the only time I've ever done so)
It seems I might be a little late to the party, but, Nitronic Rush is an absolutely top notch racing game. Completely free with no ads and a quality experience. Even if you're not a huge fan of racing, try it out, it's free.
Yeah, Im going to attend it next year, so I can only hope to reach that level of design.
By the way, nitronic rush can be considered an Alpha version of Distance, and its a free download, so you might wanna play it.
You can download it on their official page: http://nitronic-rush.com/download-game/
I've been playing Distance, which is the sequel to Nitronic Rush. It's a survival racing game, where your main goal is just to make it to the finish line. Super fun. Got a whole tron vibe going on, but it really reminds me of Extreme G from the N64.
At the very least, I recommend trying Nitronic Rush, as it is completely free.
Note that several of these requires at least one gamepad to play two players:
I'm not sure if Trine and/or Trine 2 has Local Co-op, but it has a heavy focus on co-op gameplay.
Distance (futuristic racing, spiritual successor to the free Nitronic Rush which also support split-screen I believe)
Dunegon Defenders is supposed to have split-screen, but it appears to be different opinions on that.
Dungeon Siege 3 is supposed to have couch co-op at least on consoles. Not certain about PC.
Serious Sam 3 has couch co-op in split screen. (I think all of them has it, they have had heavy focus on co-op since the start, but I can't say for sure)
Magicka has local co-op, but I'm not sure how well it works.
Painkiller: Hell & Damnation has split-screen co-op.
Portal 2 has split-screen co-op on PC.
Shank has a 2-player local co-op campaign, Shank 2 has a 2-player local/online co-op survival mode.
Can't help you with that, but I would like to plug Nitronic Rush and its spiritual sequel, Distance.
Closest to SanFran2049 I've found.
Try http://nitronic-rush.com/ This was made by some university students for a project so they aren't allowed to sell it but they've remade the game and released it early access on steam where it is called distance . http://store.steampowered.com/app/233610
While it is early access, this isn't the developer's first game with these mechanics. Distance is, basically, a super polished and improved version of Nitronic Rush which was, originally, a college project that was released online for people to download and play for free.
I'm biased, but Nitronic Rush is a really good PC speedrun that isn't hugely popular. Categories range from 6 minutes to a bit under an hour, depending on which level sets you run. You can ask us about it on the SpeedRunsLive IRC, #nrush, or check out our leaderboards here: http://bombch.us/QVW
Also the game is free. http://nitronic-rush.com
Let me list 3 Windows base games that are free to download and use.
All three might work in wine for Linux. I know for a fact Choplifter 2nd Sortie does.
I'll just keep throwing stuff at you. To add to your wordpress page.
Nitronic Rush is an amazing and free game, fun mechanics and awesome features, not supported by steam though
They are making a sequel on steam called Distance, not out yet though
Ohkay, so, easy to learn games. With Mega Man you picked a game that isn't easy to begin with, let alone speedrunning it. You already have good advice from /u/Flotsa nad /u/AbernathyJackson, but if you're still looking for games that are easy to learn you should probably start out with cheap / free games; don't wanna waste money on "easy to speedrun" games you might not find fun.
Some free good speedrunning games for PC include Eternal Daughter, Nitronic Rush, TeleporTower plus and the "I wanna be the"-series, tho some of the stuff I mentioned is not exactly what I'd call easy. Just try 'em and see what you think
Hacking the SHARK is an incredible idea, I can't wait!
The fallout mine system was very basic, place them, they only blow your enemies. You can pick them up, and pick the enemies' with a high-enough explosive perk, they stay as long as you want.
I feel like the whole RAM draining isn't appropriate. Something you shot or did a few moments earlier shouldn't not paralyze you, and if you want to nerf mines, use a coldown system, and a maximum amount.
Remember to play Nitronic rush: http://nitronic-rush.com/
Completely agreed, Trackmania Nations Forever is free on Steam, fully loaded with multiplayer, a track editor and a somewhat large single player that is quite difficult to beat.
I would also highly recommend Nitronic Rush. It is a free future-techno racer with some very cool features that makes it different while staying simple at the same time.
It's actually the sequel to Nitronic Rush. You can play that for free right here. If you enjoy if, be sure to check out their kickstarter.
It depends on what your looking for.
Probably my favorite free game is http://nitronic-rush.com/ (I can't seem to put a link?). It's a crazy fun racing game that's not like normal racing games. I personally don't usually like racing games but this one is fantastic.
Also, the game is completely free, and it's called Nitronic Rush.
And, they're making a successor called Distance.
Just thought this team needs a little more recognition.
Wow, Nitronic Rush looks amazing, and apparently they have a kickstarter to fund its sequel.
Nitronic Rush, a survival arcade racing game that is ridiculous amounts of fun to play. Check it out, and also consider funding the kickstarter by the core members of the team here.
APB Reloaded, Vindictus and Dungeon Fighter Online are fun MMOs. You may also want to check out this though, it's not steam. Just a fun racing game an indie dev made for free.
So if a student from Digipen's team that made Nitronic Rush ( http://nitronic-rush.com/ ) applied for a job and someone else from one of those colleges applied with a significantly worse portfolio. Which person would you hire? What if the latter person did mediocre on technical questions and the Digipen student aced it? Assuming these are the only potential employees you can pick from.
