Dunno if you're interested, OP, but another great way to do some RockBand/Guitar hero on pc is with Phase Shift. It's basically the Mugen of guitar rhythm games. It can be customized with different skins, is built natively for PC, and the coolest part is that it's compatible with any song that has been added to a rock band or guitar hero game, the only down side being that you have to go and download them manually from here and here.
IMO, massively worth the time to set up for someone who's really into those kinds of games, and would recommend to anyone who already has the controllers and interest.
I think it's mostly moved to phase shift. While the website looks terrible, the game is extremely well thought out and works great with all the instruments from rockband(360 wired versions) and even keyboard if you want.
You should look into some of the fan clones of the game for PCs
https://code.google.com/p/fofix/ Fofix - Loads of songs reasonable fan support to getting things working.
http://www.dwsk.co.uk/ Phase Shift - Even more songs, compatible as I understand with all the ones from Fofix and not as good a range of support.
Well worth it if you like to expand your collection. My other half has digitised 100s of their songs for both games to play on their eDrum.

Try going from there, it's fairly self explanatory. If you have any questions, just ask.
Get phase shift for the PC it's free updated regularly and you can download all of the guitar hero, Rockband, frets on fire and custom ones. (If you know where to look/torrent)
it's a staple at our parties. Also works with keyboards and drums runs at about 300fps on my old media centre pc
GH3 was the last game on PC that I know of but I'm pretty sure the port was awful. That said, there's a Rock Band/Guitar Hero clone for PC called Phase Shift that's free. You can use any usb controllers (or wireless 360 stuff if you have the dongle) or just hold your keyboard like a guitar.
Phase Shift is your answer people. It is already better than both GH and RB. And if you don't like the arcade style then we always have Rocksmith.
^^^Phase ^^^Shift ^^^and ^^^FoF ^^^is ^^^probably ^^^the ^^^reason ^^^why ^^^they ^^^don't ^^^want ^^^it ^^^on ^^^PC.
Its free and essentially is rock band without the flashy background, you can play any song you can find on the internet and allows you to create your own.
Plus it works with all controllers and even PC keyboard
Iv been using it since last summer to get use out of my 360 guitars and I love it, it runs at 400fps on my ageing media centre PC
Phase Shift is the best free Guitar Hero clone IMO. You could also try FoFiX, a fork of Frets on Fire with extra features, although you'll want to download a custom theme, and its performance isn't great. Phase Shift and FoFiX use the same song format.
Another alternative is Phase Shift although development has either slowed down immensely or stopped altogether.
It's pretty nice and is very flexible. I've had trouble with hit detection in FoFiX in the past but PS really feels like a proper rhythm game. It can also be modded to look almost 100% like any GH/RB game.
Guitar Hero as a game is pretty dead, but you can get Phase Shift and a few Aerosmith songs here: GH Songs for Phase Shift and here: Rock Band Songs for Phase Shift
I propose that instead of a markdown file, you use a midi file. One of the advantages is that almost all GH clones use it and you can make it compatible with the thousands of songs out there.

The most up to date, feature filled and open source clone at the moment is Phase Shift: http://www.dwsk.co.uk/index_phase_shift.html
Phase Shift it's a good alternative to Frets On Fire which stop developement a few years go. Sadly Phase Shift hasn't been update seens a year too, but it's basically an spiritual succesor to FoF, plus it has multiplayer.
Homepage to Phase Shift.
Phase Shift is a free Guitar Hero clone for PC (and the successor in some sense to Frets on Fire), and I'm pretty sure you can find all the charts from Rock Band and Guitar Hero.
For anyone curious this is Phaseshift with a Rockband 3 theme installed with all rockband songs and a ton of customs. Game is completely free and you can get it here.
This is actually not console exclusive, so you make a good point. You can convert any of those files into a playable track in PhaseShift (a PC Rock Band clone) by using the tool here.
You just need to be able to connect your Rock Band controllers to your PC or use your keyboard or whatever.
This took me a good 3 days to script up and finish. It wasn't designed for the traditional Guitar Hero and Rock Band games, but for a PC clone of them called Phase Shift, which you can get here. when you install it you can get the song from my google sheet here, and put it into the music folder in the phase shift install directory. I wish I could put the song on a console version of Rockband or Guitar hero, but I lack the knowledge to make that work at this point.
The PS3 Guitar controller is nothing more than a standard HID compliant gamepad. Plug in the USB and go.
Also, Phase Shift is a much better game, both graphically and mechanics-wise than FOF, and still plays FOF legacy songs. You can get songs for PS here, from C3, the group of modders who kept making customs for Rockband after Harmonix discontinued support.
I recommend you try out Phase Shift ! Supports almost all of the classic Rock Band and GH PS/Xbox peripherals and also has a tool that let's you use the setlists from the actual previous games. It hasn't been updated in years but nothing else I've tried comes close. It combines the visuals of Clone Hero with the functionality of FoF.
PS3 emulation is still very experimental so I doubt that it will run on an emulator. You can try running older Guitar Hero/Rock Band games on a PS2 emulator pretty decently if you just want to play guitar games.
You can also try playing Phase Shift. It's the best Guitar Hero clone right now and has a decent sized songlist.
I would kill for a new version, even though it'll never happen for many reasons. However, download http://www.dwsk.co.uk/ Phase Shift the guitar hero clone for PC, and search around on Google for downloadable songs (either Phase Shift or Frets on Fire versions will work). I've just recently got into it, and a few days ago found every Metallica album, including all of Hardwired and even Beyond Magnetic. It's really fun, even if it's not as good as GH Metallica was.
i was actually thinking about having a go at it, so yeah, i'll pm you if i end up finishing it i guess. i'll be doing it for phase shift because that's what i play on but you can convert it for gh3 easy enough
Phase Shift is the best one, it even supports playing online against other people. The included songs aren't very good though, and you'll have to download some songs from elsewhere. You can find nearly all guiar hero/rock band songs for it online, as well as custom songs made by the community.
It's funny you should mention those songs as C3 recently released all of Metropolis Part 2 and an Octavarium chart. If you want to play them, assuming you have a half decent PC, download Phase Shift (It's totally free) and install it. If you plug in your USB dongle for your Guitar, it should work right away. After that, go here and search for Dream Theater at the top. Make sure to download the Phase Shift versions (Clicking the box in the PSh column) and extract the rar files to the Phase Shift Music folder which should be in the Program Files folder for the game. You can even download a Rock Band 3 theme to make it look like Rock Band. The songs are charted really well, so it's almost as good as a proper DT Track Pack. C3 also put out all of Images and Words too, so if you're a DT fan, make sure to check those out too.
If you need any help, just ask.
If you want to create something similar, but yet individual and new, go on!
Yet, the best "Guitar Hero" like Game is Phase Shift - http://www.dwsk.co.uk/
You can add themes (Guitar Hero / Rock Band Themes) and add custom songs (Every GH , Every RB with DLC's and other custom songs) and even play online, if you own the same tracks as your opponents.
Check it out, it's really cool. It supports nearly every device made for GH/RB-Series
Oh, I didn't know it was coming to Steam! I've followed Phase Shift off and on since the early days of Frets on Fire, when you could import the songs from a Guitar Hero 1 or 2 disc. Phase Shift grew as an offshoot of FoF after the latter stopped receiving updates around 2010. The official site has a download if you don't want to wait for the Steam release. The creators only have a few songs listed on their page, but anyone can create content using the Editor on Fire tool and with how long the program's been around there are a ton of custom songs out there for it.
I dug around the forums a bit and I can't tell if real guitar's been added as a feature, but I know the game supported my old Rock Band drumset with the Pro Cymbal adapters, and there was a midi keyboard option but I lacked an adapter for my Rock Band 3 keyboard to try it.
When I eventually got my calibration perfect, what I had to do was download Phase Shift Lite (http://www.dwsk.co.uk/index_phase_shift_downloads.html) and play its calibration minigame. Input the number you get into Audio Lag on Clone Hero and it should be perfect. Was for me, anyway.
The single optical element also has substantial chromatic aberration http://www.dwsk.co.uk/Temp/Oculus/IPD64-ERin-CUPa.png that requires GPU effort to map out. They correct by shifting the pixels around to offset, but that means around the edges the MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) or resolution is about 1/4 or more lower than towards the center. Since the color shift is proportional to the angle (or Sin(angle), it's worse at the edges. This is done nicely by the GPU but still takes up cycles and lowers effective resolution.
Just get Phase Shift or FoFix and wait for someone to rip Gimme Chocolate from Rock Band. It'll be a lot cheaper to just buy the Rock Band guitar for Xbox than it will be to buy the whole console and Rock Band bundle.
I dunno, I won 3 local tournaments, and if it wasn't me, it would have probably been my brother. There's still super high level players on Youtube for it, so you got that going. Hopefully it will really pick back up when the next RB and GH get released. Also, if you want, there's a freeware game on PC called Phase Shift. I like playing that one mostly, cause the engine is good, and because of all of the custom songs you can easily put into it. If you have a guitar that can plug into the PC, then you can most-likely use it to play, and probably have built-in support for it already. Anyway, just wanted to make you aware that that existed.
You can actually play these songs on the computer using PhaseShift (a PC Rock Band clone) and then use the tool here to convert my file to the proper format.
Osu! Is nice, but I couldn't see myself getting too far into it either at this point. As for Stepmania, I think it's great for improving your precision. There are also ways to make the hit window even more strict. In fact, this guy even got AAAAA on a couple of songs, which wouldn't be possible without making the hit window more strict, or adding in "Ridiculous" timing, which is half the hit window of the normal "Marvelous" timing. That's hitting every note within about an 89th of a second. That's some crazy accuracy. I can get AAA's pretty well, but no way can I do that. Also, just in case you're interested, there's a freeware Guitar-Hero-esque game on PC called Phase Shift. If you can hook a guitar up to the PC, then you can probably play with that as well. If you're interested and would like to know any more about it, then don't hesitate to ask.
Phaseshift.. It is basically rock band for PC that borrows the huge library of custom song charts that Frets on Fire has. It accepts usb rock band and guitar hero equipment, along with midi drum kits, and keyboards.
IMO Phase Shift is a much better alternative. It has full drums support (including pro drums support), keyboard (the instrument) support, pro guitar support and from my experience ran smoother than FoF or FoFix ever did.
Try Phase Shift, a rhythm game that has most of the features from RB and GH (except vocals). I haven't tried pro guitar in Phase Shift, but pro keys works great.
I gave up on waiting for new rock band / guitar hero games and started playing the FREE game Phase Shift on the PC using all the old peripherals I had lying around.
Definitely try it, even on my old PC it runs smooth as silk (300fps) and can play all the songs from any/every guitar hero, rock band or frets on fire if you know where to look. Also people create custom songs - just google frets on fire songs
