xiaomi phones are usually pretty good at this (and will record internal audio without having to use mic)
the good thing about xiaomi phones is itll record any app
even youtube or other video apps
which is good because alot of rhythm games dont have a flag for it to be a "game" so it can record
afaik the xiaomi one is based off this which is also good but wont record internal audio unless you record externally (using mic and playing out loud)
recording with root alone isnt that good because you cant actually listen while it records unless you make modifications to play audio externally and for the recording
You can check out the game on the Play Store! Available US and Canada only.
For those interested in trying out the latest build (unreleased) and helping me better this game that we've worked hard on, I'd really appreciate if you sign up to be a playtester. I'll send you your copy of the latest build to start playing immediately!
I think Chinatown Fair is the best place in NYC for rhythm games. They have DDR 2014, PIU Prime 2, ITG, Sound Voltex, and Groove Coaster. Note that the place is really small so it gets crowded easily and sometimes they host birthday parties for kids. If you decide to check it out, here's a great Groupon to get $30 worth of credits for only $15:

Phase Shift it's a good alternative to Frets On Fire which stop developement a few years go. Sadly Phase Shift hasn't been update seens a year too, but it's basically an spiritual succesor to FoF, plus it has multiplayer.
Homepage to Phase Shift.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superb.pianista&hl=en is on android so you can try that too
Also look into touchbeat-j, it's a jubeat emulator with a ton of songs. You may have difficulty installing it however.
Or get something like this, which is $6 but I once got a comparable product for 2/$1 at a dollar store. It’s a more manageable size and more slip resistant.
I once made this game, it's a ~~rhythm~~ metronome game with some girl on games' avatar too (but not anime girl, unfortunately).
You can check us out on the Play Store.

the Pump Out app for android has a built in SSC viewer that lets you download converted official charts and view them with settings such as speedmod, speedrate, CMOD, etc.
Extremely useful for tourneys https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anyhowstep.pumpout
You can get it for android here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.taito.groovecoasterzero&hl=en
And on iOs here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/groove-coaster-2-original/id549050409?mt=8
And in arcade at your local Round 1
rhythm doctor (same devs as ADoFaI) might be worth checking into. it's still early access right now i believe, but it'll be released one of these days -- you can still find a free demo version of it on itch.io i think.
if you haven't discovered it yet, the ADoFaI discord has a ton of user created levels if you feel like you've just run out of content in that game
It is available - here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dreamvrstudiollc.DJArcade
Another game, which we'll test a bit later, uses AR-kit so it's only available on iOS. But we're working to get it on Android too.
We make VR games and recently we've decided to try and make mobile games which turn out to be an exciting experience.
It's a rhythm 2d platformer, and it was really fun to make :)
It will soon come to Steam: Mushroom Musical on Steam
It's on google playstore: Mushroom Musical on google playstore
Get finger sleeves they're stupid cheap, I use them for heavy flick/slide note heavy games.
These are the ones I bought 40 sleeves for only $9.

rhythm journey - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.melovity.rhythmjourney&hl=en&gl=US
it is a petty hard game to read btw (but still easier than ADOFAI)

I really enjoy this game and have never spent a dime on it. I don't know TOO much about it, I just play the dailies and do the season quests but I haven't really felt the need to spend money on it. There are music packs for bonus songs you can get that I've seen but you don't have to buy them to enjoy the game or progress. The aesthetics are so nice and the music is really good.
It's on Android. It should be in play store now, as it was recover back into GP. Here a link
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.PigeonGames.Phigros
But I will be honest with you. The dev is having a lot of trouble with GP. It has been remove multiple times, and it can be remove again in the future. That is unknown
My advice is to download in TapTap.
I’d suggest either an rk61 or an rk68 65 both are about $50 on Amazon right now.

Clone Hero (/r/clonehero) is fantastic for guitar! It will have drum support very soon, but it's not out just yet.
If you want a literal Guitar Hero game, GH3 and GHWT both have official PC versions as well. There are also various tools for GH3 to allow easy importing of customs, modding, etc.
I would still really reccomend a mech, even on a budget. This red dragon keyboard comes with oetemu red switches https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016MAK38U/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_09SSA7Z8QHM3M17H4RGK
I wouldn't blindly trust my advice though and you should definitely do your research about the keyboard because I don't know much about it. I have friends that have red dragons and I have typed on them briefly and they feel okay, those friends also don't play rhythm games though.
Or get something like this, which is $6 but I once got a comparable product for 2/$1 at a dollar store. It’s a more manageable size and more slip resistant.
Sad to see you're being downvoted for having an opinion...
There's BeatX on android which is an excellent stepmania clone.
You can load up your own beatmaps, so just pick songs or genres you enjoy! There are thousands of songs available for free on the internet so I'm sure there are songs for your favourite genre aswell!
I use these under my sdvx controller to keep it from slipping, I assume it would work on ur phone too.
For those who didn't know, Phigros is a laneless rhythm game developed by Pigeon Games. You can find out more here
Here's a link to some actual gameplay since the video on the play store makes the game look like your generic gacha game style nonsense. Which at heart it kind of is, but there's so much gameplay and rewards to be had it will be a loooong time before you ever feel like you have to spend money. I've been playing for months and haven't spent a penny.
That video is the first 16 minutes of gameplay, so you can click around and get an idea of what the UI and everything is like as well.
I actually really like the gameplay. It's just a bit fancier version of the drop down style. There's 2-6 buttons during a song, and that changes throughout the song with special slide notes. There's also a basic slide note, holds, which can slide to a different button, and a hold that you have to keep moving your finger around while holding.
The higher difficulties get quite complicated (I can't pass them) but the mid tier stuff is real fun to play.
And FWIW, I could not stand Deemo or Cytus either.
Ride Zero - iOS Store / Android Store - Meets your criteria as well, both. Interesting. I wouldn't say highest quality game, but I didn't get super far. Interesting for sure and meets your rules.
Well, it doesn't meet the Portait mode, but in terms of how Piano Tiles is:
VOEZ - iOS Store / Android Store
Hands down fav game of that style. I think it will fit your taste. :)
Maybe Pokerizu - Pocket Rhythm. A point worth mentioning is that it never have double note even in higher difficulties, instead it uses a lot of flicks, like a lot.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superb.pianista&hl=en This game is truly wonderful! It has excellent piano performances, the level designs are well made and with detail, the game's special effects look stunning, and it has a giant variety of classical songs. The league has recently been updated.
Update 1.3 is out:

Buy him the stuff so he can build a nice home play pad.

This is a good no latency controller board that can be the brain of his ddr/piu pad.
I ended up going with the UtechSmart Venus. It was a really tough choice between the two, but this one seemed to be more ergonomic while offering similar features
As for audiosurf, on AS2, my computer only hits 45-50 fps (old laptop). I was trying to find mods to make the game easier to run, as I'd like to be able to play ninja turbo (or your mod). Do you know if that's available? Otherwise, is there any way to make AS1's mono faster than elite ironmode [as-steep]?
Possibly worth noting, while the mobile version of jubeat is not available outside of Japan, there's a similar mobile app called SionsBeat. It's free, allows you to add your own music, and it's decent enough to play. I have some issues with randomly lagging notes, but it might be my device and not the game itself.
Link to app store for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sions.android.sionsbeat&hl=en
I've been playing a lot of SionsBeat lately. It's knockoff jubeat where it analyzes music you put on it. Will sometimes make really offbeat/dumpy maps, but is otherwise pretty fun if you don't have any compatability for jubeat plus. ;u;
Exactly right. Speaking of mobile rhythm games, I just found a really good one just last night called Hachi Hachi, which is mobile maimai.
The difficulty jump between a 1 and 2 was really surprising. I may put up a review of this game in the next week or two, for now I just want to play it until I see when I close my eyes.
Mobile rhythm games are fine. Just very few I've found worth playing, last night someone from Japan told me about Hachi Hachi. It's honestly the first mobile rhythm game I've found to be worth continuing to play. Has micro transactions, but they're avoidable.
