This is what I’ve used and I LOVE it. Exact measurements, hex for paint colours, and it’s so easy. I’m not great with computer things but this saved me so so much time vs graph paper. You don’t have to get all crazy with it and fully design like the examples, but it was very helpful to be able to move around squares representing furniture instead of actual furniture.
I think a good place to start would be to measure all the walls, all the furniture, all the windows and doorways and then put it all in here. That will allow you to move the furniture around and see which way you like it best.
I know this isnt the place for this topic, but you openly showed us your home and I have to mention it! The cage and the "fish tank" are too small for the animals. Especially the fishes! There needs to be at least one none-transparent side of the aquarium and hiding spots (plants/ stones)! I guess (hope) you let the rats play around in your appartment every now and then, but even though they really need more space! I dont want to offend you...but this situation isnt okay imo. PS nice appartment,^needs ^more ^color ^and ^structure, ^maybe ^make ^a ^floorplan ^and ^we ^could ^help ^more :)
thanks so much! That self-esteem will be definitely helpful in making me finally purchase these items. I've thought a lot about it and I've been second guessing myself a lot since I don't have experience in this stuff. The tool that I used is a free online website that I came across on here https://planner5d.com I hope that will be helpful for you. (Also the pillows are from fab.com if you want some unique accessories for the house like that!)
I played around with it on 5dand the furniture on 5d you don't have much choice with but just fr example:
I moved the cabinets to the opposite wall between the windows.
I gave you two back to back desks in the center of the room
Shelving and storage around the room perimeter
A drawing table under a window
An uphholstered rocker/glider..
A dog bed in the corner by the door and bookcases
A keyboard in front of the window shelves...
Had trouble fitting a sofa, but was limited in 5d to what sizes they had! You might be able to find something to fit!
It's possible you could squeeze more room if you don't move the ikea cabinets and then you could have the desks butt up completely to the shelves on the other side...
You could also add large baskets for storage for crochet and other items...
Edit: I futzed with it a bit more...
I have found an amazing and interactive tool to teach your class basics of architecture and interior design. Also these guys are providing free licenses now for the whole class: https://planner5d.com/education/
I am moving into a shared apartment so I would like my bedroom to also serve as a small social space for hanging out and watching TV. I also will be working from home part-time, so I need some kind of desk. I played around with many different arrangements and this is what I came up with to try to squeeze in all of the elements I want. Can I make this work or will it feel too cramped? All of the furniture in the model is placeholder (I don't own any furniture yet), but for the final room, I want a cozy modern aesthetic. Here is a link to the Planner5D model. I would appreciate any feedback!
This is a color of class superiority, true. I have googled for some inspirations and most of them - purple designs imitate medieval interiors. Like here
In a modern interior, I can hardly imagine smth like that. I have lived once in a bedroom with purple curtains. It was hard to sleep. To my mind, modern interior tendencies is more light
Hey I'm going to create a Mega Thread with all the pictures and layouts of the home once I figure it out. I'll definitely give you credit for it. Just let me know if you can figure it out yourself.
SketchUp is a great software, but its more of a 3D modeling software, not quite a home and interior design app. I would recommend trying out one of the below ones: • Live Home 3D https://www.livehome3d.com • Sweet Home http://www.sweethome3d.com • Planner 5D https://planner5d.com
Wow! Thank you. That's starting to come together now. I attempted to (poorly) render that in 3D - is this what you were going for?
The closest and probably only app that lets you produce and view content for cardboard is planner5d though it wont let you hand your pictures on the walls or watch your movies, you could maybe mess around with the files and switch some textures for your own images, but interaction will be limited as with all cardboard apps. Wait for Daydream.
Hey! You can use this free software and play around with your furniture setup. If you have already made floor plans you can import them directly into the software. It's really easy and you won't need to bend your back moving furniture. https://planner5d.com/
Thanks for that! I really like the idea of the "behind the couch" table. I got some measurements from the management company and threw them into this modeling software to play with.
Mine ended up being a lot busier than yours, but I think yours is a lot more simple and might work better when I actually get stuff in there.
The architect made the same problem with the layout for no tv, it also doesn't let you layout and focus on the view!
I moved things around a bit. Sofa facing the bedroom. Nice tall, wall size bookshelves behind the sofa and on the bedroom wall...
Standing floor lamps beside the sofa and a chair and pendant lamp and round table across from the sofa... See if that works on your planner...

Hello! I’m in my mid-twenties and I share this apartment with my cat & dog. I’ve been in this apartment for over a year now and have never been able to get the layout quite right. The building was really never meant to be lived in (renovated from commercial use), plus I have an odd mix of college furniture (the two futons lol) and stuff I’ve bought specifically for here. I don’t want to spend more than $500 to get this layout right, but if I can sell some furniture instead of just donating it that may help recoup some costs.
A couple of caveats: The measurements are not exact but very close. The Christmas tree is really a cat tree. I can get rid of all the furniture except for the kitchen cart and the black console table. (Also the mirror in the middle room, but I’ve evened it out with a gallery-style-esque layout of small-medium mirrors along that wall.) I really don’t want to move the bed into the back room because it isn’t well insulated, but I will if it absolutely makes sense. The purple door is the main entrance, the green door goes onto a back porch but I don’t really use that door at all in the winter.
My biggest issue is the placement of the TV in the far room. I just don’t understand where to put it because 3 walls have windows or the door. I think that getting rid of the brown futon and just having the gray as the Netflix seating is a step in the right direction? I’m also confused as what to do with the front room as the table just doesn’t fill the space but putting any other furniture in there (like the cursed brown futon) makes it feel cramped. I also have really no decor or things on the wall besides the mirrors in the middle room, so any tips on how to pick out art that doesn’t feel college-y would be super appreciated.
In conclusion: help!! I’ll take a shot at any ideas because I’ve completely run out of my own.

The easiest would be using online house design software such as this https://planner5d.com/. if however you want to design It in standard CAD software, depending on where you live i recommend you visit local city/county hall or planning office and ask if they have any planning designs for the house, you might get useful data
I totally agree for 100%!! interior designer is a must! You can find an affordable expert here: https://planner5d.com/gallery
In the bottom of this page there is a list of designers and it is possible to click 'hire me button'. I found my dream designer there!
I totally advice https://planner5d.com/gallery

I want one of the rooms of this color, but I'm afraid I'll get tired of it, it's too bright. Guys, I was advised to work with a designer from this site: https://planner5d.com/gallery What do you think?
This is a great overall! my congrats to you with the first project! can i ask your opinion about this software: planner5d.com
What do you think? is it easier\harder than roomle?
I think that you don't have good enough lighting. Because of this, the room does not look very cozy. Try changing the chandeliers. You can make a project in this application to see how a room with different lighting will look: https://planner5d.com/
I Also need help with this. I want to create kind of a blueprint/floorplan designer for homes but more user oriented. Something like https://floorplanner.com/ or https://planner5d.com/. I know I can use webgl for the designer module, but I would like to know what technologies/APIs these websites are using.
For creating the floor plans, I use floorplancreator.net. For the actual virtual building, decorating, finishing, etc., I use Planner5D.com. (They also have an app, but I usually use the web version.)
What a bed! I strongly jealous of you :) But it is hard to advise smth without knowing your taste... I would go for some large black&white photos like Helmuth Newton ones'...
And what about checking some inspirations? Pinterest or so? I'm using these guys...might give you some idea either https://planner5d.com/gallery/floorplans/bedroom/
I just found on their site the article, which might help... https://planner5d.com/blog/cScZ/how-to-become-an-interior-designer-from-home
I really don't think so. This area is too changing and there is always a huge risk that while you are studying, the trends and rules are already changed. I believe that such professions as artists, designers need more practice than education. As. I know interior design has 7 basic terms to learn (light, texture, space etc)... I understand that it is hard to find a job when you are a complete newbie, but maybe online courses + renders should start to help you.
Try these guys https://planner5d.com/
they have a short course (free and paid one), battles, and contests
I agree about lightning and bright colors totally. To my mind, before plan your next repair - all of us - non-pro designers, should go online. Like Sims but for adults which help to save some money and cut off your spending: https://planner5d.com/
If you like to try youtself as a designer for the cave - check this site https://planner5d.com/
I made several designs here, after my Pinterest "stage", to understand if all my things match each other.
oh wow! that's a reply. looks like....I think you are a prof of design in some school or university? Cuz your language and the thing, how do you structure the answer...
Anyway, what do you think about online courses - like Design School these guys have? Can it help an amateur or it should be 100% offline? Does the online work count as a practice and comfort zone path?
I've made my intro with these guys and still absolutely in love -
check, maybe you will enjoy it too! there are also some free battles here with the other amateurs!

The Exterior does not impact the interior, inside the frame is rectangular, the outer shell is designed to look this way, as a shell carapace that gives it some armor, as well as an aesthetically different exterior
It may be fair to critique design on a particular project, but my design skills and knowledge are not 0, I know plenty of design skill, and I know to have an open mind to take what you say into consideration, even if It is somewhat undeserved.
I may design a second proposed design based on this input, but I will compare both by a first and second prototype, If I knew nothing about designing living spaces, This would not be a thing.
our biggest strength however,is that even if we are flawed, we improve. Evolve. Overcome.
You can check the floorplans in this article by the way! There's a link inside https://planner5d.com/blog/cHbZ/how-to-build-the-iron-man-garage-in-planner-5d
I found this in the Planner 5D Ideas Gallery. There are only 3 renders
https://planner5d.com/gallery/ideas/SZ1N6/photos-furniture-decor-bedroom-lighting-architecture-ideas
It's an app called Planner 5D - it's used to create 2D and 3D interiors, and reminds The Sims game a bit. I found a tutorial on their website https://planner5d.com/blog/cHaG/how-to-make-the-smith-family-house-from-rick-and-morty-cartoon-on-planner-5d
I have recently found it on Planner 5D’s blog – it’s an app where you can create interiors in 2D and 3D, looks a bit like The Sims game, tbh. I think it’s a great idea to recreate the houses from popular cartoons and movies, such a great fan art! They even have a whole video tutorial, so you can do it yourself: https://planner5d.com/blog/cHaG/how-to-make-the-smith-family-house-from-rick-and-morty-cartoon-on-planner-5d
Here’s a floor plan and more renders

You can try the online interior design course from Planner 5D. It includes an introduction to interior design and basic concepts such as zoning, ergonomics and styles.
You should not place the TV near the window. You won't be able to see anything because sunlight will reflect and create glare. It’s more convenient to put the dining table closer to the kitchen. Also, do a cozy corner near the fireplace. I would start with something like this:
You can try uploading your floor plan to Planner 5d. You can add furniture and see different options more clearly.
Agree with you. Try Planner 5D, it has become quite popular recently due to its simplicity and good functionality. It might be a good solution for you.
Thanks for the advice. I moved my desk in front of the window, and sketched out my room here in Planner 5D
I think this and this are what I want to aim for. I spray painted my bookshelf black to match my desk.
I saw it on the Planner 5D blog which I sometimes read. They recreate famous houses/apartments and share the process
https://planner5d.com/blog/cHTG/how-to-recreate-the-parasite-house-with-planner-5d
Thanks for the feedback! I will discuss this possibility with the team. Anyway, you can look at 3D renders of other authors in our gallery to evaluate the possibilities of 3D rendering in Planner 5D
I found this palette in Planner5D - an app where you can create 2D and 3D interiors. That includes Monica's apartment - they even have a YouTube tutorial!
Have a look https://planner5d.com/blog/cHGa/how-to-recreate-the-friends-apartment-with-planner-5d?utm_source=fb&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=friends_rooms
Thanks so much for replying! Here’s a 2D and 3D of what it’s supposed to look like. The furniture in it are not the exact furniture I will use cause I’m limited to the free trial stuff 😂 anyways here it is! https://planner5d.com/view/?key=bf653018444ca6c15a346898bb149495
It actually is a loft bed. I can tell it’s kind of hard to see in the picture. But here is the project on planner 5d. I have it set with a dresser with a tv on top, and a small couch under the bed.

We’ve recently moved to a new rental apartment and have experimented with other layouts before finalizing on this because:

What we want to add:

This is what I have come up with so far. The things I find most important are my TV and my PC/ Desk / gaming set up. I don't think I want my desk in the bedroom so thinking either where the dining table should be near the kitchen or in the corner when you enter the apartment. Any help or ideas are appreciated.
Hey Tom, funny thing is that I had pretty much the same question a few weeks ago - where to get some practice and create a kind of portfolio to showcase my ideas. I ended up by a decision to use online service to create digital interior/exterior designs (I use Planner5d but they are many on the market). I choose a room and some average size and then design it as I see it. Cant say I have a huge progress but friends say that some of them are okay-ish.
Why not try Pantone's color of the year - classic blue! It may seem too risky or idk, a bit bright, but it can look sooo pretty. Recently I found a short article about incorporating this color in interior design and I can't stop thinking about painting my walls blue... You can read it here if interested: https://planner5d.com/blog/cSLa/pantone's-color-of-the-year-2020:-why-you'll-love-classic-blue
Hello,
I'm currently owning a pair of Kef Q100 and an old Denon AVR, my sound is coming from a Raspberry Pi 4 with a Hifiberry DAC. I really liked this setup during university, bus as I'm now earning quite some money I'd like to upgrade (my budget is around 2500€). My listening room isn't big (around 16 square metres), so I guess I stick to bookshelf speaker. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the KEF LS50, maybe in combination with a Schiit Freya and Schiit Vidar? Or would you recommend to buy the LS50 Wireless, they're almost the same as the LS50+a nice Schiit Amp?
I've got a question regarding the optimal speaker placement. I own a pair of KEF Q100, but will probably at some point in the future upgrade to something more expensive. I've got kind of a weird wall separating my studio apartment, and my questions is which of these two versions of speaker placements make soundwise more sense:
Version 1 (back of speakers is bedroom, couch in front of wall) or Version 2 (speaker in front of wall, couch in the middle of room). What do you think?
This looks like it! Not sure what the difference is Andoid has the app for free and I think the website is free as well.
The only thing you have to pay for is if you want more furniture objects available to you. But if you just want to build your home and have generic sizes it's free...I pay like $11/yearto have access to all the furniture but I don't think it's a must.
I think you want an app like https://planner5d.com/vr/
have you tried Microsoft https://www.maquette.ms
The architecture apps like iris vr probably arent suitable, gravity sketch has no good way of measuring and getting a copy of Microsoft Layout is so hard I dont have a copy despite trying to get one.

What about here, moving the couch and table forward and more center in the room, leaving space on either side for foot traffic? Do you think the coffee table blocks dining room entrance too much? Then I can use a low, wide bookcase behind the couch as a catch-all.
I used planner5d.com The free version is pretty limited, but if you can use your imagination a bit with colors, textures, etc, it's helpful for visualizing furniture layout, if not for anything else(: For example, my coffee table is oval-shaped, but the free version offers only rectangle.
Good luck with your first home purchase!! My fiance and I are looking to do the same shortly too.
https://planner5d.com/editor/?key=a3a9bc2c0a4fa369b71b55885e7fa581
I think that link will go to a floor plan. That arrangement of furniture is the best that I could come up with. The brown child bed that is outside the room is a stand in for this chair that is officially a yoga chair, actually a sex chair, but I just want it to read in because it looks comfortable. It might be impossible to fit nicely in the room, would probably need to be raised, and also it might be weird to have a sex chair for reading.
Kind of a hard space to work with. Consider using the "thing" as a bedside table and getting rid of the current one? As far as change... Maybe this layout? I like it because it allows an open walkway from the door to the closet to the window and opens up a light space around the window.
Are you talking about something like this: http://www.roomarranger.com/ or this: https://planner5d.com/
If so, this is a very complex piece of software. You'd probably have better luck to try to negotiate with a software vendor like of of these to license/white label their existing software, and then hire someone to help you create whatever custom objects you need.
If you're just wanting to use it for clients, and not planning on selling it, then another option that could work is to use an open source project like: http://www.sweethome3d.com/gallery.jsp Hire someone to customize as you wish, and as long as you abide by the terms of the GPL license (ie, you must open source your customizations), you're fine.
But building something like this from scratch would be many thousands of dollars. I've not written any software like this before, but I'd guess that $10,000 to build a piece of software like the ones above would be a great deal. You'll find people on upwork.com promising to do it for $1000-$2000, but at best they'll produce a visually unattractive, badly buggy piece of software.
Planner 5D is a good one. There's also MyVirtualHome, Sweet Home 3D, Space Designer 3D and FloorPlanner.
This site lists 25 different types of free/paid design software
Try this link. Hopefully this one works...
Assume you need to pay for delivery for the mattress. I would plan to spend maybe $300-$400 on a new mattress / frame / delivery and use any spare cash for small items or paint, if you can paint the walls.
I also like having a wall that is not white, I just don't like the paint swatch look. The red also doesn't match your bedspread. Could you maybe choose an accent color that you already have in your room and paint over the red with it?
edit: if you can't paint the wall, maybe invest in some wall art to cover up some of the stripes.
There's a link on the side bar for a free room planner or even just a quick drawing with dimensions would help! And maybe the dimensions of the main pieces of furniture in your room, such as the bed, dresser, desk.
OK, I got a bit carried away. :P
Also, the couch and table are fine. If you want a new couch cover, you can get them, but I don't think you need to.
I'm not sure how to improve the layout of the room. Could you do a bit of measuring? You can put together a simple plan view of your room here, and that will probably help visualising where things might go.
Each area doesn't have to be big - I'm just talking about how you'll spend most of your time in three specific places in the room: at the desk, on the couch, or in bed. Because of that, you'll need certain things to hand, and a light suited to the task you are doing there.
I have quite a large room myself, Im not expert decorator or anything but try to divide it by activities and imagine what you would need, then think of a nice lighting you like and go with it, buy lamps and directional lights.
For general purpose decoration I think a carpet would be nice, try to color match your stuff, and remember this rule 20/20/60 try to make it feel like is 20% some dark color, 20% some light one and 60% some material/color normally the 60% color is the color of either your wall or floor good luck.
P.D: Also try using this https://planner5d.com/ it helped me a lot :D, maybe posting a screenshot of your floor plan could help to improve the feedback.
You can try to play with this program https://planner5d.com/ where you can design your room in 2D or 3D. It's like minecraft for designers and maybe it will inspire you to some new ideas or possibilities. They also have a gallery of other people's creations. That might be helpful too.
I think the tv would work best in the upper left, with the sofa against the opposite wall, and the loveseat in the middle. This would only work out if you don't mind having the sofa against a wall or having the loveseat be in front of the fireplace.
I created this plan on Planner 5D. You can view it in 3D and change the metric unit under Settings.
Yes! It would be so totally AWESOME! I could live in that for like ever, and that would be just one room. I have like the whole thing planned out.
STEAMPUNK! THAT'S AWESOME! A game room is cool too.
Oh, and you might like this website for designing stuff- https://planner5d.com/

A better (and to scale) image gallery is here. http://imgur.com/a/ax0BK
The first ones are using Planyourroom and the scale ones are using Planner5D. Planner 5d is easier to make scale properly, but PlanYourRoom is better as far as furniture options, and it's completely free. (5D requires you to pay for certain color combos/furniture combinations).
https://planner5d.com/editor/?key=d12f62db0476fa2e26bb42c570e4fd55 is a version of my apartment you can play around with. By pushing the couch against the window, are you thinking something like this? (new image gallery with couch pressed against the wall)
Hi! Thanks for the welcome, although I am a lifelong NYer. I am moving from a 1 bedroom to my first studio apartment but I am certainly not new to the city :)
I did consider turning my bed that way at first. but I was afraid that it may be too close to the couch. I have closets and dressers in the main entrance/foyer of the studio (L shaped) so i'm not too worried about dresser space, although I will probably pick one up in the future to free up the closet space for other things like tools.
How do you feel about this arrangement? I added what could be a set of dressers behind the couch. The only thing I don't like about this is that the tv is now blocking part of the window but I don't know how to set it up so it would be centered with the sofa or have a comfortable viewing angle.

A console is a great idea! Take a look at /r/interiordesign for midcentury furniture. I made 3 examples for you. I hope Im helpful :)
I tried to use your furniture for this example, but I would recommend you throw some of the stuff out. I think 3 sofas are one to much. The Mirror is in the bedroom, also the desk. The dark shelves are next to the glasdoor. You should put a Painting above the fireplace. And move the nice Paper lamp to the livingroom. For a cleaner style you should put away the decorations that are not modern. And try something new : New curtains and shower curtain are a good idea! Dont forget some niceThrow pillows Have fun!
Shelves. They're horribly ugly things my wife recovered from a Federal office closing, so I may scrap them.
I already have the table and it's a wedding gift from my parents. It'll be hard to stick it in the basement ;)
With the latest layout I'm thinking of hanging our bikes on the long wall in the kitchen between the cart and the can, but can't represent that in planner.
Edit: https://planner5d.com/view/?key=22b8e5ae32647159bb1d337454c35313 is my latest update. Need to get to other things, but will try to keep the layout going while I'm picking hangings, etc...
Thanks. Played with it, ending up with this:
https://planner5d.com/view/?key=36de80446999082bdd29390a242cea1b
Major issue here is that the table can't be easily configured to 4 people, but I think it uses the space better and the kitchen is still open enough to accept the table.
Miles,
I really like the plan that you proposed--thanks for putting that together. I didn't give you dimensions for the room, which I should have done, and unfortunately the ones that you chose are a tad...optimistic :-) Here's a scaled plan of my living room with the sofa in the position that you suggest:
https://planner5d.com/editor/?key=17abe69abb8518532b937ed4be397ee0
As you can see, the sofa (76" wide) is fairly large relative to the width of the room, leaving little room for the blue chair and end table. I really like this plan, because it gives me a nice area for entertaining and also a reasonable amount of space to use as a little work area. I'm still a little unsure about the sofa, though. I wonder if it would be worth getting rid of it in favor of a narrower (~60") love seat.
Thanks!
Thanks. So you would go with something a bit more like: https://planner5d.com/view/?key=ede4f593b0765d7c33659b7468acb690
Where I have a four seater in the space and then an arm on the opposite wall? The TV will be facing the four seater. Would I need a side table next to the arm? I was going with a glass coffee table in the middle on top of a rug.
Funny you bring that up, I was just at Ikea not even 4 hours ago looking at some other possibilities for desk options. I agree, and am really quite keen on getting rid of one of the desks! The L-shaped alternative would be absolutely perfect, if the mac got used as often as the PC.
If it were up to me, I'd get a tiny little desk to stick in my closet with the Mac on it (as it gets used for about a day a month, and technically has no reason to be out all the time) If I were to move the mac into the closet though, then the dresser which is in there would have to come out; so wouldn't be a pure gain of space in the room.
I'm currently mocking some options up in Planner 5D. looking for a solution :)
