Well there is this page for minimal wallpapers, however I think I got this particular one off of some other site. This isn't the original though, it's edited by me to my liking. Here is the original., if you like that one better :)
I, too, am a fan of Freakazoid. I know it's not exactly what you were looking for (and I would love to see what blo0p can do with Freakazoid), but maybe this can tide you over:
http://simpledesktops.com/browse/desktops/2011/mar/08/freakazoid/
I also have a solarized variant that I use on my other machine.
OS: macOS Mojave WM: chunkwm Bar: Pecan Terminal: Terminal.app Shell: zsh Background: tree Dotfiles: not up yet, maybe someday I'll get my life together
I agree, but there are some exceptions. Look for some more simple backgrounds that are less busy and more geometric.
You can get some really cool looking designs from Simple Desktops.
I like Simple Desktops. There's quite a variety of designs.
Unless you're talking about physical desktops… In that case, I recommend using an old wooden door with a piece of glass on top. You can get legs for it from IKEA.
Try simpledesktops!
I know it's not specifically what you're looking for, but I do know they have quite a few character wallpapers similar to what you're looking for!
This is my desktop - http://simpledesktops.com/browse/desktops/2012/jan/30/eclipse/
And this is my phone - http://simpledesktops.com/browse/desktops/2012/oct/14/space/
Here's how it looks actually on the phone http://imgur.com/On5qTFC
I like simple desktops stuff, especially the space related ones. Nice and clean.
I was in a tipi where they were playing noise music in the style of static noise. All I could think about was diamonds falling down in endless caves, scratching against the stone walls on the way, making these sounds... When everybody was trying to get some sleep, I took my iPod and put on The Dark Side of the Moon. It was amazing. When I closed my eyes I saw these beautiful white background, and these lines appeared, looking like running tracks almost, but with different colors (kinda like this but more like running tracks), and they would turn when the music changed. And whenever a new tone played, a new track would appear, and then disappear as the note stopped. After a while there were a lot of these tracks going in different directions. It was beautiful.
I present you with my bright, custom(pr) Openbox inspired by Papercolor theme.
On the screenshot, you can see, left-to-right, top-to-bottom:
Panel - polybar
Openbox theme - ArkDarker Solid
Distro - Arch
Laptop - Thinkpad T25
Polybar contents, left-to-right:
Wallpaper, yes it is loss
Running arch with i3-gaps. Wallaper can be found Here.
Music player is ncmpcpp. I'll try and upload dotfiles in the near future, if anyone is interested.
Just a tip for when you post links, use [ text ] ( link ),without spaces, so that it looks better and your comment is easier to read.
Example:
"Stock elementary with this wallpaper and transparent plank."
I have my suspicions that @claimall didn't create that, but I haven't found a better source yet.
Edit: http://simpledesktops.com/browse/desktops/2015/may/10/escape-velocity/ was uploaded months earlier.
Oh wow!! That's a blast from the past! I'm the same artist. I submitted that to Simple Desktops ages ago and had forgotten about it until you just reminded me! I only recently added the fish to my design because I felt like the design needed a little something more to look good on a shirt.

.conkyrc, I took some Conky config from internet that I don't remember and just deleted stuff I didn't need.
Really have been digging my experience with the wm-utils project.
In the scrot is
this wall
tmux
some color script
cmus for music
modifed again env-info script
In addition, I leveraged my battery driven bash prompt script, slightly modifed, for bbdr. That will give a static border color for the various state/levels. I also modified rainbow which normally gives pulsing borders based on an array of colors, to use my current xcolors, with static border colors when battery state/level at [n], then pulse with red when critical.
Its been good partnering up with /u/ChefIronBelly for this excursion. Thanks Chef!
Find me on github or the linuxbqq forums
This site might be just up your alley OP! I have found a lot of lovely minimal/flat wallpapers here
This green one for example
Dotfiles are here
O hai! It's been a while since my last screenshot.

I am pretty obsessed Simple Desktops, with a preference for darker backgrounds. This has been my background for months.
I like to have a simple desktop. Here's the wallpaper in case you want it. Other info should be visible in the screenshot itself.
Background is from Simple Desktops, the clock widget is Onca, icons are Pop UI, used GravityBox to get the status bar icons looking the way I want and Aus Weather for the persistent weather icon.
GTK Theme and window decorations: Siva-Flat http://nale12.deviantart.com/art/Siva-Flat-1-3-0-353499016 Wallpaper source: http://simpledesktops.com/browse/desktops/2012/oct/14/space/ (Great site for cool minimal wallpapers by the way)
Yeah, I couldn't stand transparent terminals for that reason, then I found http://simpledesktops.com. Nice big swaths of color on most of them, you can pick and choose the darker ones (or invert some of the light ones). Readability and personality.
I was inspired by the wallpapers at http://simpledesktops.com/ and thought I'd try making something like that as a practice for learning Illustrator. I'd just choose some random stuffs and think how I could emulate the style prevalent on those wallpapers. Scribble the ideas roughly on my phone or a notebook. Then I'd try to make them on Illustrator and maybe even do a few more iterations. Unfortunately, I didn't do it for more than a few days, so I've made only a few of these.
No specific suggestions, but I like SimpleDesktops when I'm in a more minimalist mood. http://simpledesktops.com/browse/
I tend to prefer things that almost invite fingerprints on the screen, though.
A jersey that is minimalist (kind of like some of the fractal designs/ simple color combinations here: http://simpledesktops.com/) without any obvious logos or brand plastered across the front....
Also, nicely designed "state" jerseys. I'd love a nice "Live free or die" jersey for NH.
Credit goes to Catilin Wang from Simple Desktops
it's i3 on openbsd. the browser is midori. the GTK theme is oomox with a custom colour scheme. my thing is now to browse simple desktops and design themes around random wallpapers.
Simple i3 setup that goes well with the flattr icon theme.
Background: recolored simpledesktops.com
Feel free to ask if interested.
I've gone with solarized pretty much everywhere. Still a work in progress, will link dotfiles after I do a little bit of a cleanup.
Please note the images I have linked my be deemed NSFW, they're literally a pair of feminine legs in a vector art style. But your boss may be a dinosaur and I don't want you getting a warning.
I last used Linux about 15 years ago. When Mandrake was one of the more popular Distros and buying ISO's from the web and waiting for the post was quicker than downloading them.
I have recently got back into Linux and started customising my desktop. I started with Ubuntu, but it would not play nice with my GPU (Nvidia GTX 750) Debian was being a pain regarding my network card, so I went with Arch. Which was far less of a pain in the backside than I expected it to be.
The wallpaper is from http://simpledesktops.com/browse/desktops/2012/jun/28/signora/
The config files I have made can be found at https://github.com/0-8/Conky I have never used Github before so I hope I have done that right.
The icon theme in Plank is Numix Circle Icon Theme.
The task bar at the top is Tint2.
I am pretty much running on an Xfce base. The window borders are Numix Themes Arch Blue (On the AUR)
I do hope this is permitted here, I read through the rules, and was a little confused. If it isn't up to standard, I am sorry.
I change the bg color on one of the wallpapers in the website. Better for dual monitors. Not super bright.
For anyone interested.

I came over from the 4S a couple weeks ago.
Nova Launcher Prime, Zooper Widget Pro, any icon pack you fancy, Tasker is neat to play with but not entirely necessary IMO, set up the built in remote app with your TV.
I like PushBullet for texting from my computer, Morning Routine for alarm clock, Textra for SMS, Pocket Casts for podcasts (can sync across devices and platforms), Fotor for photo editing, Zedge for ringtones, and I just discovered http://simpledesktops.com for sweet minimalist wallpapers.
Sorry no links, I'm on my G3 and I'm lazy.
Thanks! The colorscheme is solarized dark; the squares are indeed just a background image which you can find here (similar backgrounds on this website).
Details!

Its installed in a virtual-box VM (still too much of a gamer to fully commit to Linux). My next project is to get this functional dual booting with windows. Just seeing all the beautiful posts here made me want to try and do my own.

Honestly, I can't think of anything to even put in the middle of this page. Everything important can already be accessed via App Dialer (using the "custom" button in the navigation bar or GravityBox's Pie) or exists in the notification shade (weather, recent calendar events and Gtasks).

This site has loads of simple colour designs: http://simpledesktops.com/browse/
There are quite a few similar to your example but you might have to scroll through quite a lot of them to find the ones you like :(
Hope I helped :)
Sorry that everything is in German!
I highly recommend http://simpledesktops.com/ for some good mousepad images.
EDIT: I decided to be witty and used http://simpledesktops.com/browse/desktops/2012/sep/11/readwrite-blk/.
Get it? It's a floppy disk. Dohoho.
I am too easily distracted to use most of the wallpapers I'm seeing here.
I usually just cycle through a lot of the wallpapers on http://simpledesktops.com/. Currently using this one.
Ack, the album shots were compressed to hell, please click "View full resolution" :3
GTK theme is CrazyMuthaFucker.
XFWM theme is Prelude Dark.
Wallpaper is a slightly colour corrected version of this.
I don't like the way firefox looks with dark themes... The bright-to-dark gradients everywhere make it look very bad... If anyone suggests a nice fix to this I'll reward as many upvotes as I can give to one post!
I guess I just like really minimal wallpapers with lots of negative space, which are quite hard to find.
A site for you:
Really loved the owl. It's now my desktop!
If you like minimalist wallpapers, there's simpledesktops.
EDIT: Since it's a bit annoying to download everything from there, here's a rar of them.
The Site has a load of sweet minimal desktops. They're made for Pc/Mac but work really well on phones.
It's a feature of Windows 7. Google "windows 7 rss wallpaper", there are plenty of how-to guides.
Then find yourself a suitable RSS feed. Flickr is a good source for photography. Personally I like more abstract vector art for desktops, here's what I use:

Widget 2 - Battery does nothing, just indicate if device is charging - Wifi area will toggle Wifi on/off and say either “nope” or “yeah”, and icon toggles as well - Signal area will display what type of connection is active (3G/4G/None) and icon somewhat reflects signal strength (it’s wonky af)
Widget 3 - If music is playing, it will show currently playing info in app of choice - If music is playing, tapping will open the app currently playing - If no music is playing, it’ll tell me to “play some funky music, white boy!” - If no music is playing, tapping will open the app last used

I couldn't figure out how to change the color of the title bar, some programs still have it gray.
All the art used in the designs came from simple desktops and the names of each design corresponds with the name of the original wallpaper/art (e.g. Zoo3 is from the wallpaper "zoo")
I'm running Arch Liniux with a LXDE desktop enviroment. My Icon Theme is Flat Remix and my lxde theme is Numix.

Similar, but I get dark images from Simple Desktops so the background has some personality, but is never distracting.
Currently it's a dark grey lotus
I fancied a cleaner desktop but still required some monitoring on my second screen for use when gaming. I modified the existing Google Now widgets created by SantiagoLP98 on Deviantart removing some redundant information. I also created my own widgets for the GPU and network monitoring .
GPU monitor is using the MSI Afterburner plugin, it has some faults such as the memory figure is hard coded because the plugin doesn't retrieve this information correctlty however the skin "should" change colour depending on the graphics card e.g. Red = AMD, Green = Nvidia and Blue = Intel.
Network monitor shows the current download/upload speeds as well as a ping to google.com which allows me to see how congested my tiny 1.5mb connection is.
Links below:
If anyone wants my GPU/Network widgets let me know and ill will upload them to my dropbox.

Simple Desktops is the best :P Also, here's what it looks like with a different icon theme:
I've been trying for days to get GNUstep to work, but apparently the apps don't exist. Also, I'm using Ubuntu and WindowMaker. I forget what theme I'm using under WindowMaker.
