>There's room for more than one block-building game
You can absolutely make block building games, but they don't have to be Minecraft clones. Good examples of that would be Terraria, or Blockland. Hell, I enjoyed StarMade! When I said "copying Minecraft", I was commenting more on games like Worldcraft.
Firstly, Starmadepedia is without a doubt official. If you didn't notice when they announced it's launch, the official site links to it. This subreddit doesn't define what is and isn't official.
You can download it for free from the website.
Personally, I get bored playing solo, but I run a small server for me and some good friends, and that's a lot of fun.
I used to have fun playing on a larger server, but then it went down for a really long time, so I got disheartened. But if you start on a larger server that's stable, it can be really, really fun!
Check out Starmade. You build a spaceship, fight pirates, mine planets and travel through space. It's currently free during alpha, though it will cost in the future.
It should work to play, but you might want to avoid landing on large planets. Those are quite demanding
> next payday
You can download the game without buying it. There are plans to transfer to a paid model some time in the future. StarMade can also be optionally purchased, in return your profiles are linked to your Registry account and cannot be taken by other players.
In addition to this, you may want to change your weapons entirely since there's a new system with them.

Starmade it's pretty cool too. It's like a Mincraft Space Game. http://star-made.org/
Like say crimsonochre, No man's Sky will be very cool!
But the main main main space game of all time will be (for sure) Space Citizen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TWQFSzQyeM
This game it's in fact a Space life simulator and want to be very realistic. The video I juste send it's a very small part of what the game will be and talking of this game can take a lot of time, but this game will be great, one day, far away from now =(
Starmade. Currently free to download on their site, will cost when they go out of alpha. You build ships & space stations, trade, mine, fight pirates and explore space. It's a fantastic game http://star-made.org/download
The patch is here! go get it

You can get the latest available version simply from the launcher, if you don't have the launcher, you can download it at http://star-made.org. There is no set 'creative' mode, but if you are in SP you can use the command /giveid (your in game name) (Block-ids (number of blocks that you want.) Having massive ships comes from wanting better ships, the more shields you can cram into it, the more AMC's, the more missiles, the better. Having a small ship is a disadvantage because you will be destroyed by larger ships, the only advantage to a smaller ship is its turning speed. Buying the game is advantageous because you are supporting the development of this game, you also get it at a lower price than it will be offered in the future.
This is one of the posts I was reading. If you scroll down past the nonsense of the original post here, you'll come across what I was leading to believe. Also as the guy mentions (Comrad), look through the old forums.
This originial post though just made me laugh. I just sat back thinking "This isn't at all the Space Engineers I've come to love"
http://star-made.org/content/games-and-theory-strategy-3-dimensional-warfare-pt1
http://star-made.org/content/games-and-theory-strategy-3-dimensional-warfare-pt-2
I wrote both of them based around 3d combat and strategy and tactics when there is terrain in which to constrain an enemy.
they don't cover everything, but have some merit to this discussion.
> One general rule is that you are not permitted to distribute anything made by the creator of StarMade and his partners. You are not allowed to give copies away without permission, make commercial use of, try to make money from, or let people get access to StarMade and its content in a way that is not fair or unreasonable.
> This especially includes, but is not limited to, the client and server software of StarMade of official versions, as well as modified versions.
If you allow other voxels than cubes you could build dodecahedra or other polyhedra. Starmade does this and it looks pretty sweet.
Starmade. It's this awesome little voxel shipbuilding game. Isn't as pretty as space engineers, nor does it have the great destruction physics, but it makes up for it in that the multiplayer is much larger scale, and the ships you can make are exponentially bigger. If anyone's interested: http://star-made.org/
Okay so I got in contact with someone from customer experience director. And he basically told me to download the launcher from the main site: http://star-made.org/download . And place it in a new folder anywhere on my harddrive. Install the game inside that folder, and it will work again. At least for my pc, and it's also working again through steam.
Thanks to all of you for taking the time to help me.
Starmade is very similar to Space Engineers (came out a lot earlier too) but its more Minecraft Voxel style gameplay. It has very indepth gameplay though and people have made amazing things in it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YyxsW_2xmo
You will see any sort of patch notes released here: http://star-made.org/news
You will also see it posted here on the main site: http://starmadedock.net/

Generally dev build updates do not get covered by the dev team. They reveal subtle bits of information to people that can get out the news in a reliable way. I post updates to the builds on my Youtube channel. Mushroomfleet also does this.
Stable releases always get a full list of the changes but they happen less frequently. Expect dev build updates AT LEAST twice a week even if the changes are minute.
My attempt at the shiniest boat in the verse. Not done, but close. I need to add:
-shuttles
-more detailed internals
-some external tweaking
-wobbly-headed dolls
-crazy preacher hair
-sponge baths
-the special hell
I outfitted it with minimal shields and lots of thrust and power, as well as a jammer. no weapons, but I left room for warp if Schema adds it, which has essentially been confirmed. ( http://star-made.org/news/patch-day-starmade-0-15#disqus_thread ) <-- go to the Whats to Come Next section.
Tell me what you think!
EDIT: formatting fix EDIT EDIT: grammar fix
>You need MODS to get what Starmade has
Yeah, but you have the option to use them in MC. What if I dont want spaceships? Pretty much fucked if you play Starmade and you like options.
>Started as a Flash game
No it was a java applet. It still uses Java.
>Starmade has been in development since Minecraft has, if not longer.
It says on the official website "Inspired by Minecraft", right on the front... http://star-made.org/ Also, release was in 2013...
I already knew about this new piece of information but had forgotten.
"The color of weapons (only cannons so far) can now be modified by placing any light source block directly under the output block of a weapon group."
http://star-made.org/news/weapon-balance-changes
Only other games I can think of that is similar to Space Engineers are: Star-Made http://star-made.org/) Blockade Runner http://blockaderunnergame.com/
Dysis http://dysis.net/ is more RTS though and usually more geared towards third person type of play although it does have first person.

So many features
I don't get the downvote pattern in this sub... It's like there are a couple people that downvote every comment in every thread.
Anyway, back on topic. I've looked into Empyrion and it looks pretty great. I've dabbled a bit with Star-Made which is a game that is basically in the same vein. Star-Made is kinda clunky and obtuse though and nowhere near as polished.
Zerahypt is a excellent game, and it's single player (amazingly enough), though in very early development is needs a decent computer. (http://zerahypt.net/)
Starmade is free right now, but there's already premium options available, it doesn't require a beefy computer but again is still in development. (http://star-made.org/download.starmade)
I'm gonna throw my hat in and suggest starmade
Like NMS it has a procedurally generated universe, but is completely random. It doesn't have wildlife, but it does have building (space stations, ships, warp gates, planets). The ship building is very simple, but it can get get very complicated, very quickly. The whole game is free atm, but in the future it will be pay to play.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that there are NPC traders and space pirates.
Starmade is essentially Minecraft in space, allowing you to build your own ship to explore space. Last time I played it was around a month ago and the game still had quite a bit to go in terms of completion, but theres still a lot there to do if you enjoy the building and crafting aspects of those games.
You might as well check out StarMade if you can't get into Space Engineers. It's more blocky, so more similar to Minecraft, it's still in free alpha right now and it got a rail system added recently which effectively allows you to have moving and rotating parts on your ship/station. And it has dodecahedral planets!
Wait, that'll get ripped to shreds. And it's still very alpha.
Still, it would be an interesting video, watching his team build a fleet and get destroyed by modded minecrafters.
Check out Starmade. It's currently free until it goes out of beta to download on their site. and you can check out the sub here /r/Starmade/
You construct ships, explore space, kill space pirates, raid stations and mine planets. It's quite amazing, even though it's still not finished.
You can get it free from their website http://star-made.org/ I think it is free till the game is released. There are a few features SE should steal. Cloak , Shield and money system with shops. Also star systems with jump drives.
I realized one of the questions wasn't answered:
To download go here:
Just click download on your computer type to download the free version.
The buy thing is kinda odd if you decide to buy the game in the end. You don't really get any real confirmation that you now have the full licensed version but I suspect that comes later.
Yeah I saw it, but i don't like the incoherent graphics. buildings/ spaceships are blocky. but then the models are sort of realistic and then the planets are procedually generated with fractals and suchs. Personally I like Star-Made more.
I like the cockpit view of EG though, it gives a nice immersive look while flying. I miss that with SM. Also the planets are really nice and big.
Know what you mean. Painful to find information when you're been away from the game. http://star-made.org/news/balance-and-effects
With all the outdated wikis and sites out there I recommend checking the news for info. It is at least probably accurate ;) http://star-made.org/news
I agree with all your choices except StarMade... Have you seen the latest trailer? Everything featured in it is player made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YyxsW_2xmo
There are some basic tutorials on the official website, but you have to remember this game is still in Early Access and usually tutorials are made after core mechanics have been finalized.
I think Star-made is by far the closest i've seen to no man's sky. it's still lacking a bunch of features but it has also more customization. It has a procedural galaxy with proc. planets and ships. in this game you build everything yourself. ships, weapons, bases etc.
I like the game but it's more an action shooter with a bit of trading than an exploration game right?
It reminds me mostly of Star-Made which is pretty much the same game but without the cool visuals and exploring
you can however create everything you want though
There is plenty of really creative mine-craft like games out there:
First of all, OP, thanks for the giveaway. Here's my Steam ID.
I've actually got two games that I'd love to recommend:
1) It's not quite a Steam game, but StarMade is free (for now) and absolutely amazing. It's been Greenlit for a while, and I've not heard anything about it being released on Steam, but I'd keep an eye out. StarMade is, simply put, Minecraft in space. But really, it's so much more. You're not limited to a planet; you can explore solar systems, build stations, and even construct and do battle with ships made with millions of blocks. Conquer solar systems and rebuild planets. The last time I checked, the game is in alpha, and has an awesome and active lead developer and an unofficial team of other devs; most of the game has, incredibly, been created by a single person. There's no pain in trying out the game, as it's free. I hope you find it enjoyable.
2) If you insist on having a Steam game, I'd recommend E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy to everyone. It's often on sale for $2.50. The gameplay is fantastic, and very open; there's a feeling of absolute freedom, with a cryptic storyline on the side. Combat is insane and unlimited; use stealth, spawn armed clones, deploy turrets and drones, or rush into combat with a big-ass hammer. It's one of the few games in which your body armor can actually make bullets useless. If you're in the mood for a fantastically well-done indie RPG/FPS, give it a shot.
I'd love to give Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition a try.
Thanks for bearing with my spiel on my favorite games.

I think I'll sign up for the PC & Android 9 bundle.
Side note: If you insist on having a Steam-only game, I'd recommend E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy ( http://store.steampowered.com/app/91700/ ) to everyone. It's almost always on sale for $2.50. The gameplay is fantastic, and very open; there's a feeling of absolute freedom, with a cryptic storyline on the side. If you're in the mood for a fantastically well-done indie FPS, give it a shot.
I agree with the above. I backed this game quite a while ago and there's only recently been any real progress, but there still isn't a whole lot to do. It gets boring really fast at the moment. Essentially it's a glorified custom ship collision simulator.
The game has a ton of potential, but at the moment I'd hold off.
OTOH, if anyone is looking for a similar game, check out Starmade. It's making progress much faster, actually has planets, asteroids, and functioning AI. It's more minecraft-esq and still has a ways to go as well but way more to do in it than Space Engineers. I've already built a Kergen Gunship from Starlancer (small groups of them protect my shipyards), an F7C Hornet, and I'm builing a TOG destroyer from Renegade Legion. It also fully supports multiplayer (I've been running a server for 4 months).
I don't want this post to sound like I'm shitting all over Space Engineers or trumpeting Starmade too much, but there's just an absolute ton of stuff SE is still missing before I'd consider it a viable game. At the moment I'd consider it an early- or mid- Alpha.
Try Starmade. Basically minecraft in space, where you build your ship block by block, and fly around to blocky planets. It's still heavily under development, but you can play it for free at the moment and the forums give indication of where it is headed.
Spergs are obsessed with things like, building city planet stations in an autism space simulator. The texture pack I'm using is pretty motivating as well because it adds to my immersion. Also a little bit of time spent throughout a couple months. This project is probably my 5th (and by far largest) big project. The others were learning experiences.
http://analpoundtownandassociates.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=23 is a topic with a few images of the texture pack being used, and http://star-made.org/content/texture-pack-%E2%80%93-low-res-minecraft-style-clean-gui is the thread made by the guy who created the pack. If he's not around for the next update, I'll probably expand the pack to include any new blocks or GUI elements.
Here you go: http://star-made.org/forums/servers
This is the official test server. It's not very fast though, but that's ok since we are testing the limits of the game.
There are people online most of the time.
There is also http://star-made.org which is already out in Alpha, free to play, and open to buy at extreme discount.
Its not as well known but I run a gaming community at BinaryChaos.net you can find a dedicated server and some people to play with. :)
There is also Star-Made, which is updated extremely frequently and showing promise. The developer also takes any constructive criticism and suggestions seriously and is always adding new features at the suggestion of his current fans =D
I just updated the server version. Got rid of some lag issues when people with 200+ pings are in the game, but there still is some lag when players with high latency join. We might need another server in the USA, since I can't reach Lupich at the moment, so that he updates the server version.
There is a guide online on how to start the starmade dedicated server at: http://star-made.org/help
