Greetings.
I went to Settings Geral General Management》 Language & Input》 On-Screen Keyboard 》Samsung Keyboard》 Languages & Keyboards》 Input Language Management》》》 Selected Top Languages (4 in total).
Then I installed the EKH external keyboard app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper). When installing, start EKH Settings and select "auto detect").
Using DeX, go to > smartphone <, under Settings》 General Management》 Language and Input 》 Default Keyboard》》》 Select External Keyboard Helper (EKH). (If the EKH keyboard does not appear, persist by clicking the default keyboard; if it does not appear long, click language and click the Default keyboard again until the EKH appears).
For me only that solved. Good luck.
The remote's only flaw is that it sends a keycode_enter instead of keycode_dpad_center. 99% of the time these are interchangeable, but some apps are specifically looking for center, which is the default.
There is a half solution for this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
With this app you can remap the key to center, but you will lose the on screen keyboard in the process, since this app acts as a keyboard.
> The only issue I've run into with it, is that the select button is mapped to "enter" and not "dpad_center".
you can fix that with this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
As long as you don't need to rely on the actual letters printed on the keyboard, you can use any physical keyboard layout and remap it (provided there are enough keys).
For example, I have the UK Pixel C keyboard, but want to type in Bulgarian. There is no built-in way to type in Cyrillic, so I use External Keyboard Helper which lets you map any key to produce any letter. There aren't enough letter keys in the UK keyboard to cover all Cyrillic characters I need, so I also remap some of the symbol keys. I use Alt+Shift to switch between Cyrillic and English.
You could easily do something similar for Swedish - it will be even easier since you only need to remap a few of the symbols.
Years ago I used External Keyboard Helper, because it hid the soft keyboard and allowed to remap keys (handy for language layouts). But if you only want to hide the soft keyboard I suppose you could use Null Keyboard, it should work but I haven't tested it.
although i don't know if this app would be of any help to what you want to do i mention the app external keyboard helper because i also wanted to remap a few things and it helped me.

I had to (buy and) install External Keyboard Helper Pro to get my external keyboard to work. The issue I had were some characters not working, such as # and others. Maybe this can help you too.
I have a cheap rf and i use External Keyboard Helper
Read How-To configure it
I love application shortcuts , really useful if you don't have dedicated web , email ... etc buttons
Yea yea I get it. I used a physical keyboard on an Android TV box (Remix Mini) with dvorak and I think I eventually got it to work with Polish diacritics ąóśłćń using this (not sure if it was this app that eventually got it working, but I have it in my purchase history and I didn't return it, so I think it may be it)
> Has as anyone experienced this behaviour?
Yes, although i'm not sure if this intended or not. Honestly, the best remapping solution is to use a custom keyboard such like, External Keyboard Helper Pro, the only drawback is that you lose the on-screen keyboard.
I actually considered to recreate this app with only the remapping functionality and opening an on-screen keyboard when it's needed. Although i don't know if that's possible.
Problem with Button Mapper is that achieving all it's functionality without root is pretty difficult.
personally i'm using this app to remap the keys: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
To answer the question, i have binds for directly open Youtube, Kodi, Twitch, Spotify
Thanks. I ended up using this one but I'm going to give Button Mapper a try too. That last apk says it's unstable on newer android and development has stopped.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
It has a free version so you can test the app before buying. It's a custom keyboard, you can rebind buttons on you remote. I have a 3rd party remote, and some of its buttons didn't worked with android tv. With this app I can change that.
I have a comment on my remote, and talk about this app too :
Sweet. I might have to get one. Here's another app you can try to map the back button: External Keyboard Helper
I use this 3rd party rootless input method https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper with a minix a2 airmouse/keyboard that I usee with a minix STB, on my NP. It works great can remap just about anything. i also use it with a mid 2000s BT keyboard only mapping key combos to my six most commonly used apps on the NP minimizes ever seeing the homescreen, just go from app to app. that same mapping works on the minix a2 airmouse.
Like you I have a K700 lying around from a logitech revue, finally, gonna order a unifying receiver this week, the above input method even has scan codes for the k700's colored function keys on the top row.
I'm using an 8BITDO Gamepad bluetooth controller. I have an android phone and I use External Keyboard Helper It took some doing and it's not as good as I would like it.. but now its fine. I set up a custom Keyboard.
From that I programmed each button to do what I wanted. for "a" I changed it to be keycode "space". ( I'm not super familiar with the subtleties of this program, but it seems to come with some default commands, though no numbers)
For the numbers and Asterisk, I used Unicodes.
so
A (scancode 305) = "space" (keycode: space)
B (scancode 304) = "1" (unicode: 0x0031)
Y (scancode 306) = "2" (unicode: 0x0032)
X (scancode 307) = "4" (unicode: 0x0034)
To go back to deck view, I used: START (scancode 311) = "Back" (Keycode "Back")
To mark current card, I used the asterisk:
R (scancode 309) = "*" (unicode: 0x002a)
Hope this helps. let me know if you have any questions. I find this super convenient and I do most of my cards before going to bed. I have this swing out arm that can hold my phone/kindle and I just hold my gamepad and get it down before passing out. :D
I can share my solution, the question is how important the voice search to you.
I think it's kinda pathetic that in 2017 big brands are still selling remotes with a FUCKING IR as an only option. Meanwhile these fuckers are also selling soundbars that you should put in front of the TV, covering the TV's IR sensor in the process... sigh
/rant
So the solution that i found, it's not perfect, obviously involves a workaround, but here it is.
I tried a bunch of smart remotes from aliexpress/ebay, but i ended up using the MELE F10 Deluxe. You will also need this app (side load it to your TV): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
So overall the remote is really good, but lacks voice search, and some buttons doesn't work on Android as it should. That's why you need the app, which is a custom keyboard for Android, and with that app, you can rebind keys, so they will do what you want them to do.
For example, the home button doesn't work, it doesn't sends the BROWSERHOME command, but with the app you can fix that. Also, you have extra buttons on the remote, like the media control buttons. I don't use those, so i rebinded them to open Youtube, Twitch and Spotify. So i can switch between these apps without going back to the Home screen.
The remote has 2 modes, IR and 2.4g, so you can do some layering. In IR mode the remote can be taught, so you can copy some functionality over from the original remote.
Exp.: The 'Menu button' (next to the Home) has two functions in my setup.
In IR mode: it works as the Display Menu (copied from the Sony remote)
In 2.4g mode: it opens HAL launcher (to have a recent apps functionality, i'm on Marshmallow)
Normally i use the 2.4g, but if i want to turn the display off (just listening to music), i can switch to IR and access the Display menu.
It's hacky, but works. Also on voice search... i bought a external usb microphone, but it is horrible, i had to stand next to the tv so it could pick up my voice. But... with the magic of Google Assistant, it was able to pick up my voice sitting on my couch, 3 meters away from the tv, with a normal speaking voice.
My point is, with Google Assistant officially pushed to the TV by Sony, a cheap usb mic next your tv will be enough, if you want voice search functionality. But you need GA's magic for that.
I played around with Android + ssh/tmux/vim on my Boox Onyx Max2.
From that, I've found solutions for an issue you've mentioned:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper&hl=enwas able to re-map keys:
Regarding distraction free Emacs:
I was following https://gist.github.com/bzg/8578998 as a guide line and came up with:
my-toggle-naked-emacs: https://github.com/novoid/dot-emacs/blob/master/config.org#naked-full-screen-emacs--f12
I do it regularly, and it works fantastic.
The trick is to find the right keyboard. I personally can't find a better one than the Think Outside Stowaway. Even though it's a decade old, it's still the best keyboard for phones that's been made. Here's a video of the keyboard in action.
The stand attaches to the keyboard and the keyboard is rigid, resulting in you being able to move your phone and keyboard as one unit. This is the crucial part I discovered, as I often didn't have room for setting up other phone stands and keyboards on desks, and setting it up on your lap is hard when they're separate pieces.
I've found that I prefer not using a mouse (though you could connect a bluetooth mouse if you wanted); the android touch interface is great, and when you're typing on this keyboard, your hands are close enough that you can easily flit your fingers over the screen and then return to typing.
Most of the usual keyboard shortcuts - copy-paste, select all, tab, etc. - work just fine with this keyboard naturally (I suspect that's more a function of Android though). If you need to add more, buy the External Keyboard Helper Pro; you can add your own keyboard shortcuts and remap keys. The only downside to this is you have to manually select the input method manually each time thanks to Android's limitations. If you are rooted though, you can just set up Tasker to switch the input method automatically whenever you connect to your keyboard.
I use OneNote as my primary note-taking app, and it's pretty great. It syncs well with my laptop via OneDrive, and I love that I can just pick up my phone to snap a picture of the whiteboard or powerpoint, or to draw a diagram, and then just plop it back down and resume typing.
I also am writing a novel, and do all of my typing on the phone on Jotterpad. No distractions, excellent markup support, and the smaller screen allows me to focus better on what I am writing, I find.
I thought at first that I'd have trouble getting distracted working on my phone with all the Android notifications. In practice however, I've discovered that the opposite has been true: since the notifications pop up at the top, then disappear, I find I'm better able to keep going when working on my phone vs. my laptop, since on my laptop my phone was constantly vying for my attentions. Even with Pushbullet pushing my notifications to my laptop, I find the phone experience to be oddly less distracting.
Battery life is fantasic; even with the screen on a lot and bluetooth enabled, I still get a good 6 hrs of life out of my phone. Yay for a 3220 mAh battery! I do usually bring an extra battery, or battery pack, just to be safe, but that's nothing compared to an extra laptop battery, or laptop charger. The Stowaway uses a AAA, but I've had it for months, and have yet to replace it.
Things the Note 4 doesn't do so well with a keyboard:
Multitask - I can make split screen work for a short time, which is awesome. Unfortunately however, many apps still don't support it. If you get an app to force split screen for those apps (like MW-PEN App enabler) it works ok.
DPI Woes - Note 4 default screen resolution isn't awesome, especially for all those pixels on that big screen. Try this hack to improve it if you don't have root; otherwise you're forced to rely on changing the system font size. Why bring this up? Well, some of the default Samsung apps don't work right after you do this, like Messenger, especially in Landscape mode, which you'll have to deal with a lot when using the keyboard.
Stock Launcher - If you're going to go with a keyboard option, you probably want the phone in landscape, and the stock Touchwiz launcher doesn't allow your homescreen to rotate to Landscape. So go with another launcher. I personally use Nova Prime with Landscape mode enabled, and I love it.
All in all, I highly recommend using the Note 4 for work, especially in conjunction with the Think Outside Stowaway. Let me know if you find another keyboard that works as well. If you do find one that works well for you, I think using the Note 4 in lieu of a laptop is totally feasible, and in some places preferable. Give it a shot; I think you'll find it works surprisingly well, and you may find yourself using it (like me) in situations where you would normally use a laptop computer. Good luck!
This app works for me: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
Keep in mind that you will lose the on-screen keyboard if you use this app for remapping.
External Keyboard Helper Pro is the one I use.
Advanced layouts allows you to map key bindings.
Check out External Keyboard Helper Pro
P.S. This looks like it does everything I want... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
Try this app to reassign the back button:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper&hl=en
Works well for my 3rd party remote.
this app requires no root and works great for several controllers i use with my nnexus player https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
Might be overkill for what you need but this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper will let you create a custom mapping pretty easily
