Fleksy is my current favourite keyboard. It looks - to me anyway - much better than any other offering and the auto correct is decent. It won't help you if you completely mess up the word but if you just tend to miss letters then it is very good indeed. Also has a number row and the ability to hide the space bar.
Fleksy is my go-to keyboard for touch typing. (Except now, I'm on a Blackberry.)
The layout, animations, sound and gestures like swipe left to delete the whole last word just make typing so much easier and fluid for me.
It has predictions and extensions, but I never really use them. It's just there, hidden, waiting to be activated in the very rare occassion that I do need them.
EDIT: Screen size is a factor, yes, but personally, I have a harder time typing on smaller phones. Your experience may vary though.
Fleksy for my phone, and Hacker's Keyboard for my tablet.
Cool. Glad you mentioned your preferences. Also you can easily download that app without having to install another app store but you seem to be disinterested so no point talking about that.
Here are some more suggestions:
Try these and see for yourself.
I use Fleksy, and it has the option of hiding the space bar/enter key/other non-essentials aside from the delete key so you have more screen real estate. You swipe to insert spaces, line breaks and delete entire words. I never thought I'd get used to it, but I'm glad I did because it's incredibly intuitive now and I have troubles going back to Google Keyboard.
This is what it looks like on my 5.5" 1080p screen. I don't really need the space, but I go for minimalism in most everything with technology.
Can't stop recommending Fleksy. Simple, useful, fast.
Yes! I have this issue no matter which keyboard I use. I finally solved the problem by switching to Fleksy, which has a mode that allows you to remove the space bar (two finger swipe down) and use a swipe to the right for a space. My typing speed and accuracy has gone way up since then.
Something like this?

Or the same one you linked to?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riffsy.FBMGIFApp&hl=en
use Fleksy https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
long click on the spacebar let's you use the keyboard as a cursor swiping down on the whole keyboard corrects the last typed word, swiping left deletes one letter, holding after swiping left deletes a word + you can use little extension if you want to
Check out Fleksy. It's got all the usual stuff, but you can disable them all to pretty much have a normal keyboard. It also has some themes to match your phone's "theme" or your style.
I use Fleksy and it's the best minimalistic keyboard I've found. Even though its name says "emoji & gif" you can disable all of that crap and have a very minimal keyboard. The only thing it doesn't seem to have is the "select last word" function you're asking for. I believe that's something quite rare to find unless the word was mistyped, which Fleksy will underline it and if you tap on it, it will show the correct words/add to dictionary function, similar to how MS Office does it.
Fleksy also has a huge amount of themes, and dark/night is one of them.
Fleksy Keyboard is great and lets you add new words by just swiping up twice the first time it corrects you. It's one of my must have apps, and you can get it on android or ios.
Try the keyboard Fleksy. Every other keyboard I've used on this phone had lag and was annoying to use because of it. Fleksy for some reason is the only keyboard app that types as smoothly on this phone as an iPhone, in my experience.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
Flesky Keyboard also has a "chameleon" mode if thats your thing. Other than that it's a fantastic keyboard with some really cool features. No swipe, but the other gestures are intuitive enough to keep me using it.
Fleksy keyboard supports this! It's one of the in-app keyboard extensions, it features buttons for Copy, Cut, Paste, and Select All. I've tried dozens of keyboards over the years and Fleksy is still my favorite. And you couldn't have picked a better time to try it out, because the app recently went 100% free, including all themes and extensions. Try it out!
Weird... so now there's a brand new app (version 6.0.1) that doesn't update the previous app (version 5.7.x, I think)?
New App URL: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
Old App URL: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.kb (that I've had installed for a while, which I guess I'm uninstalling now and replacing with the new one?)
From your post I understood you want shortcuts. And that's why I use Fleksy.
I have been using it since ages. Their shortcut actions for deleting last word entirely just with a swipe, correcting spelling of last word just with a swipe, shortcut buttons on top of keyboard for selecting all, copy, cut, paste and scrolling over the text field, are very useful for me. Also nice and simple color themes.
You just try it for 10 minutes and decide whatever you want. If you think you know a better keyboard considering such shortcuts as priority, recommend and I'm ready to uninstall Fleksy now itself.
i'm still using Swiftkey no problem at all. but there are some other good keyboards out there like Fleksy , Chrooma Keyboard
It's a keyboard for android devices. It has a slight learning curve so if you give it a try (which I suggest you do) stick with it for a few days before giving up on it.

I use Fleksy.
Though it does not have a great prediction but the best auto-correct. I am basically typing this whole comment without even looking at the keyboard once, it just corrects every words.
i don't know if this would work but try Fleksy , for me its a nice keyboard but i did not continue using it because i wanted the swipe feature
Maybe an underrated app but I love flesky. Once you get used to the gesture control, it'll be a breeze typing with it.
Also tried out gboard and swiftkey, still came back to this one.
Good news! If you don't like the keyboard the phone comes with, you can install a different one. Swiftkey is popular. There's also Fleksy. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
You might want to try fleksy. We've got two extensions that might serve you: the Shortcuts extension replaces a shorthand code with a larger word/phrase as you type, while the Hotkeys extension adds a series of buttons to the top of the keyboard that can expand to anything you like (words, phrases, or emoji sequences).
Both of those request network permissions (which stock Play services doesn't include in modal).

If you're looking for keyboard customization, check out Fleksy
I personally like mine dark and flat but you can make separate keys and stuff too
Thanks, glad you like it. The keyboard can be found at the link below and you have to customize it yourself. I am not sure if it is a free feature. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
I use Fleksy and although it's known for having a learning curve, once you get it set up and learn how it works, you can type crazy fast. There are a lot of themes and options to make it your own, and it recently became free!
Like others pointed out this looks like to be a keyboard problem. If you don't mind spending some money I would go for Fleksy since it is a really barebones keyboard
Fleksy: I really like this keyboard for the gestures and themes but I switch back and forth with SwiftKey whenever there's an update. (I don't recommend if you swipe instead of type.)
FolderSync: honestly I shouldn't have needed this app to automatically sync files from my phone to cloud storage and vice versa but I did and it works great.
Moon+: my favorite eReader app.
Nova : I've really only tried three custom launchers gut between this and Apex, this is my absolute favorite.
Relay for Reddit: recently started trying this app out and I actually like it.
Sync for Reddit (dev): my first reddit client, it's missing some things which is why I'm trying other apps but I really like the design as well as the effort the developer puts in.
Shazam /Soundhound: I have both of these apps since it doesn't always work and when that happens I just use one of the other, but Google's option is good enough. (I prefer Soundhound)
SwipePad: I'm too lazy to go to my app drawer.
I'll update this post when I'm less sleepy. (probably)
Edit: gonna go ahead and add some stuff.
GoneMAD/PowerAMP: I started off with PowerAMP but I ended up with GoneMAD as my favorite but I do not regret either purchase.
Play Store link.
Have you tried out Fleksy?
Looks like Fleksy to me
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
If I didn't rely on Gboard particular features, I would be using Fleksy.
> Is there anyway to add emojis to someone's contact name?
~~I just now added emojis to someone's contact name via Fleksy keyboard and SwiftKey keyboard.~~
See /u/Ruby_Language/'s post below.
> What's the purpose of Daydream; should I even use it?
It's a screensaver; I personally have no use for it but some use/like it, when it was initially announced it made the battery life worse (for me) so I stopped bothering with it.
> I've noticed that my phone won't always light up when I get a notification, why is this? I have it set so it should work that way.
No idea, do you have any apps set to no peeking or maybe you're in "Do not disturb" mode and the app requires it be treated as priority?
> Is there anyway to edit my messaging setup i.e. the background colors, message bubble colors, etc?
~~The only way possible is with a 3rd party application like Textra.~~
See /u/Ruby_Language/'s post below.
> This question relates specifically to the eBay app, so not sure if anyone can help me on this one. On my iPhone, I would get a notification sound whenever someone messaged me or made me an offer. I would also get a chaching sound when I made a sale. On this phone, I get the notification for the message, but the chaching for both the offer and the sale, which is annoying since it makes me seem like I'm selling something when that isn't always the case. Any fix for this?
No clue. :c Have you sent the developers an email?
> Having used Android in the past, I'm used to the Gallery being the default photo app. Now it seems like it's all up to Google Photos? I'm getting used to it, but it doesn't seem to work the way I want it to all the time. For example, I went to open up a photo that was in my Google Photos in VSCOcam and it only showed me my device folders such as screenshots.
I personally gave up on Google Photos in lieu of Quickpic but I'm not sure I want to continue using the app now that they were bought.
> Any way to have a static colored status bar? I don't always want it to be the same as the background, for readability reasons.
Not sure what you mean, would you mind providing examples/screenshots?
> Lastly, this isn't directly Nexus 6P related, but what are some of the essential Android apps I should download?

I have been using Fleksy for years now. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
try fleksy. there is no flow or slide to write, but it's pretty good. the auto correction is solid.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard&hl=en
Fleksy is probably the closest alternative.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
also has extensions for the keyboard (I use the text expansion, GIF and text editor extensions personally)
Try Fleksy. It has 3 different sizes, so one of them might be convenient for you. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
Fleksy has a number row extension.

I think it depends on the keyboard. Fleksy keyboard on the playstore doesnt do this.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
I use Fleksy, it's awesome and I can switch languages by swiping on the space bar.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
give Fleksy a try, have been using it for 5 years
Fleksy You can configure the whole middle row as spacebar (right swipe action).
Fleksy and Multiling O Keyboard are keyboards I have used a lot and liked. Currently I am testing MessagEase, which does not have a QWERTY layout and takes some getting used to but to me seems to have the potential to be the most ergonomic of them all.
I use Fleksy, so...
Fleksy has this feature:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
you can set up buttons with shortcuts to a text of your choice.
Fleksy supports GIFs. I don't know if it works exactly the way you want it to, but it's worth a shot.
Here's the app, for those wondering.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard&hl=en
Fleksy keyboard does this and is way better
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntellia.fleksy.keyboard
Fleksy has an extension like that, ai.type Keyboard has something similar. There's a bunch of keyboard apps on the Play Store.
Fleksy with the Chameleon theme. It changes colors based on the app. It's pretty sweet.
How about this? Is that the paid version?
