I no longer travel without foam earplugs. They have got me to sleep in environments where I could not without them. Screaming weans....no problems. "Naaaaa naaa naaa naaa" hen party groups....blocked. Groups of wee dicks drinking buckfast....ignored.
I have them in every bag I am likely to travel with including my laptop bag and holdall.
I buy these fuckers in bulk... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Macks-Ultra-Ear-Plugs-Pair/dp/B0051U7W32/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=mack+earplugs&qid=1562693184&s=gateway&sr=8-4
There's no magic fix, you're looking for a flat at peak student time. All you can do is go on Rightmove and Gumtree filter by recently added and keep going on every day to see what's new. If you get a viewing (most professional letting agent require you view it), decide right and there if you want it and contact the letting agency, I've lost out on a flat because we took 30 minutes to talk about it.
Seriously this is good advice in the short term.
I snore like a freight train. My partner wears these earplugs every night for about 10 years now and has not had one problem with ear infections or my snoring. I am a very big dude, I can apparently make a lot of noise while snoring and now my partner enjoys uninterrupted sleep.
I also wear these earplugs when travelling. No other earplugs come close to the quiet. One evening a car was set on fire not 20 feet from my hotel window. Fire engines, with sirens etc. Apparently the owner was running around screaming in his underwear. I slept through the entire spectacle thanks to these babies.
Your story sucks. I feel sorry for you and those dugs.
Haha, how can anyone not?! :)
For stuff like this though, I only really use Excel (or LibreOffice) to prettify the output. All the number crunching and everything else is done in Jupyter notebooks.
Sometimes the local dump has them in their electrical section - might be worth checking with them or giving them a phone. I only spotted 1 on gumtree: https://www.gumtree.com/p/televisions-plasma-lcd-tvs/philips-24-inch-crt-tv-retro-vintage/1333736347
This place charges £9 for a bag of Cheetos
Not sure if it'd be any help, but I've been using the 'mynoise' website during lockdown and working from home. Especially the cafe noises one : https://mynoise.net/NoiseMachines/cafeRestaurantNoiseGenerator.php just a bit of babble in the background that seems to help with focus and the general emptiness without distracting me.
I moved here last weekend and am in a similar position (except my wife/dog aren't joining me for another 4 weeks!).
Have you thought about joining a club or (if you're into sports) team? I'm a keen cyclist so am trying to get into that up here even if riding in groups isn't something I'm massively into. Meetup.com seems to be a decent place to find sort of likeminded people.
I'm trying to be positive too and see it as an opportunity to read more widely/get to know the city/try different pubs. Does help that Glaswegians seem - on the whole anyway - to be pretty friendly.
Interesting vaccine calculator for Scotland here: https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/vaccine-queue-scotland. Not sure how accurate it is but has me down (30 year old with no health conditions) for start of April.
You'll probably struggle to get anything through an agency (and they're mostly arseholes anyway). Might be easier looking for rooms in flatshares, SpareRoom and Gumtree would be good places to start looking. I don't know how easy it'll be to find two rooms in the same flat though if that's what you're looking for.
Welcome!
Don't be put off by this rabble - we drink a lot. Mainly to cope with the shitty climate.
A wee bit of profile stalking tells me you're an Aussie looking for your relos. So first off, head to the Family History at The Mitchell Library and track them down.
If you want to make friends quickly then I'd recommend joining a sports team. I don't know if you play AFL but if you do, or fancy giving it a go anyway, then check out: https://www.gumtree.com/p/sports-teams-partners/glasgow-sharks-australian-rules-womens-team-recruitment./1143955559
Have you tried freelancing? I've done a little bit of data work on fiverr.com. With your skills you'd probably pick up work pretty easily. It would all be done from home (or wherever) and you set your own schedule. Only downside is you'd be self employed. But if you're only doing it part time you'd be unlikely to earn enough to need to pay tax.
Haha, yeah. Download Draftsight for free. It's an almost direct port of AutoCad and is very user friendly assuming you know how to use it. Just import an External Reference / Image, change the Transparency for ease of tracing, then scale to OP's fit. Start tracing and when done in around 80 minutes, save as a suitable file type (OP - is PDF acceptable?!). If you don't have a PDF writer, I would suggest Cute PDF as a great option.
I vaguely knew there was an app, but I didn't realise people actually paid attention to it. I'll download it now!
ETA: I assume it's this one? (Android.)
Haha, fuck knows. Looks like a glitch on the website I use for the gigs.
Either that or he's our resident /r/glasgow one-man band and wrote our as yet unnamed subreddit anthem.

This is an agency so they should take calls, but it says "students only" so I'm not sure about being a couple. Doesn't hurt to ask though.
Not ideal, but: https://www.gumtree.com/p/other-household-goods/wheelie-bins-/1384477130
Of course if there's no wheelie bins where you are yet, will the bin lorry even come? If it's just your place that doesn't have them, can you sneak stuff into the neighbours' bins under cover of darkness? There's always one wee old lady who never fills hers.
WeatherSpark will let you compare Glasgow to somewhere you know.
Here's Glasgow vs New York
While there is a high number of days with rain, on many of those there is not enough rain to interfere with anything you might be doing.
http://www.songkick.com/concerts/30385384-roots-at-jazz-cafe
Pricey ticket, but The Roots are some live band! (There is an early show and a late one.) Not exactly Adele but hey ho, you could always go see Justin Beiber?
You would have to pay the council tax which with the single person's discount is upwards of £85/month (and those big West End flats you're going to be looking at £130ish). You're going to struggle to find somewhere on your budget, although it does depend on where you're looking to live. There's this place, or this place, both in the south side.
Do you only work part time or something? I'm with the guy that said stop freaking out and start looking. Flats are out there but you're probably going to have to up your budget.

but i'd recommend having a look on facebook marketplace or gumtree first
here's a belter for 50 quid
They're in very short supply everywhere. Best bet is to keep an eye on Stock Informer.
Looks like they're in stock on Amazon at a premium from weirdo sellers.
Don't think you'll find it in town.
Try the app? Otherwise, I heard if you mention them on twitter, they normally get stuff sorted quickly - @theenvtaskforce
If you don't mind paying to take your car on the ferry, on the outer hebrides you can pretty much camp anywhere without anyone minding (although it doesn't hurt to check with the nearest croft to be polite).
2 of my favourite spots were the beaches on Harris opposite Taransay https://www.flickr.com/photos/24327853@N06/3853332709/ and out by the abandoned Eilean Glas lighthouse on Scalpaigh http://www.photographers-resource.co.uk/images/A_heritage/lighthouses/LG_SCT/eileanglas.jpg although that's a mile or so walk from a road -but that meant the evening was just me, some dolphins and a family of otters hunting in the cove.
Amazing islands, hard to believe you're still in the UK when you're there.
To a weather service, rain is measured in inches or centimetres. They put a rain gauge out and see if it fills up. If it goes up by a certain number of inches or centimetres in a day, then it rained that day. I’ve no idea what the threshold is.
But you know how they say the Inuit have so many words for snow? The Scots have so many for rain. From driech to pishin’ it, depending on the velocity, angle and size of the raindrops. “Rain” doesn’t cover it.
Hello there, people of Glasgow. Long story short, I'm at college and have a business plan as 1 of my modules. So I've to come up with my primary research based on a questionnaire I made. It's just about as short as this post, and I require a few rapid responses from Glasgow's finest, so I can type up a report. Cheers!
I loving this app as it has recordings of other peoples journeys and comments so it gives you a better idea of how long a hike will take.
It's free
Check out this trail on AllTrails. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/scotland/argyll-and-bute/the-cobbler-ben-arthur
Not exactly in Glasgow but Dunaskin near Dalmellington has plenty of track and some old abandoned trains to check out.

Example of what's there: http://imgur.com/WyRaKTu
You mean Pollokshields West/East? That's not Govanhill. Or do you mean Queens Park? Which many call Govanhill.
Either way, you are close to the exchange here.
If it were me (and it isn't) I'd get a decent ISP and switch to the cheapest mobile tariff I could (I'm £7.50 on GiffGaff and still paying for more than I use).
Go to clubs revolved around what you are into (there are sites with meetup.com outside your own uni clubs). If you're no sure what you're intae then pick something at random and give it a go. Judo, boardgaming, rowing, whatever.
I’m a bit late here, but I suggest buying a hygrometer . Try it out in a few rooms to see what your humidity level actually is. I run a humidifier in my bedroom at night during winter because it stays at about 35% without one. For me, I prefer indoor humidity around 50%, but I would consider anything less than 40% to be arid.
This is a pretty fascinating tale about a poisoning by a woman of her lover. The author includes excerpts of their letters as well.
This'll be what you want.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Second-City-Charles-Allen-Oakley/dp/0216929946
Thorough history of the city from medieval times up to the 1950/60s. Tonnes of photos, sketches, newspaper cuttings etc. Really has a lot to say especially about the development of the city from around 1800 on. You can pick up second hand copies on Amazon for about £3, but I got one in Voltaire and Rousseau in the west end for a quid one day. I'd recommend popping in there as they usually have a lot of similar themed second hand books lying around.
In terms of more recent books, I'd strongly recommend Glasgow: Mapping The City.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Glasgow-Mapping-City-Cities/dp/1780273193
Big coffee table book basically running through 400+ years of the city in maps. Fantastic book.
You won’t get a bean to cup machine for less than £300 even then it would be the lower quality end of the market. but you can buy coffee from all the local roasters already ground or get a grinder for about £20 on amazon. If you want the cheapest way to get good coffee I’d go with this AeroPress The Better Coffee Press |, Black, 1 Pack https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000GXZ2GS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_tVxLEbE0HBY67 And a couple of bags from dear green, Thompson’s, canary girl or artisan roast And a separate milk frother
Or I have the older version of this VonShef Espresso Machine, 15 Bar Pressure Pump – Barista Coffee Maker with Milk Frother for Latte, Cappuccino, Americano, Flat White and More – Black/Silver https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07WNJ7FLM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_P1xLEbY49W2MA
Does the milk as well. It’s good but I need a choice between espresso and full size and it being a cheap machine the espresso isn’t strong enough to make into americano by adding water.
IT said I've legimate reason get those ports open for courses /research, just have to talk to the head of studies. Meanwhile unblock Steam MP for research.. Was thinking about buying Hotspot Shield. It unblocks console MP games apparently so maybe pc too.
On Android, the Scotrail app can read the card details. You can also use Smart Ticket Checker to view a more detailed listing of what's on your card.
I find it's handy to have that when the Ticket Inspector's phone doesn't work, it's also nice to see if the ticket has been loaded onto the card correctly myself.
Sometimes when you have to transition from one part of the station to the other. IE: Queen Street Low Level to Queen Street Upper Level it closes the journey. At least it used to, it's been a while since I've used it. So maybe they've fixed it, I wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't though.
Straight up, Visual Studio is the best IDE out there regardless of language. Even Java guys will tell you it's the best and they can't make use of it! Of course that locks you into the .Net framework, but IMO that's not a bad thing. .Net is in high demand right now in the workplace and its only going to get more in demand with it having gone open source recently and with it being ported to work on the *nix platforms. ASP.Net MVC is hot also in terms of web right now and highly in demand.
VS community edition is free and has everything you could want right in there.
I'm a solution architect and I work with C# daily and I can tell you it's a really really nice language to work with. Also, if you can write C# you can easily move over to Java and vice versa.
If you're serious about coding, read that code complete book which is language agnostic. It will teach you how to write good quality, maintainable code. Also, I can recommend watching the Clean Code videos by Uncle Bob. He knows his shit and you will come away with a lot of knowledge. You can find them online for free if you know where to look.
As for what to slap on your laptop OS wise, it doesn't really matter as you can easily install some virtualisation software and then create a VM to install another OS for a particular requirement.
Happy to answer any other queries if you so wish.
Not urgent, but last minute decided I would really like a disco ball (basically this) for tomorrow. Anyone have an idea where I could get something like that in town tonight or tomorrow morning? Argos was my first guess but they only have one that looks pretty bad
In other countries radiators are placed under the windows. That way there much less of a chance of water condensing on the windows due to warm air flowing over them. Switching to triple glazing would help too. But as you are renting, neither of those are helpful.
The reason for condensation, other than misplaced radiators is inadequate ventilation leading to high humidity.
Get yourself one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ThermoPro-TP50-Digital-Thermometer-Temperature/dp/B01H1R0K68
and you want to keep your house humidity at min 40% and max 55%. Meaco dehumidifier digital display is not very accurate, so don't rely on that. (I have one too).
All that is left for you is to ventilate, dehumidify and heat.
Some people might suggest you put a foil of some sort on the windows, but I'm afraid that will only make things worse, humidity that would normally condense on the windows is going to condense on the next coldest thing, think corners of the walls, behind furniture, inside flooring. Don't do that/ If you want you can put a strip of toilet paper on the bottom bit of the glass and replace that every morning along with wiping the windows dry (and flushing that paper down the toilet rather than binning it - this removes the moisture out of the house).
All I can say is good luck and start looking at/working towards moving out of that place as that mold is not healthy.
I bought 2 of these in the black Friday sale and they're doing the same job as one of the £300 ones as I've bought them before for another flat. Works out about £100 all in
CONOPU Dehumidifier 1200ml,... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BFRLFFPR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
The men's leopard print thong shop. Otherwise known as Amazon.
Apparently the new version is in the black friday sale, but I can't get the discount price to show up for me. The older style is still sub-£100 though. 3-in-1 jackets just give you a lot more flexibility, so you don't end up roasting if it rains during summer or freezing if it rains in winter
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Berghaus-Alpha-Gemni-Waterproof-Jacket/dp/B00FPMWRG8/
Aye, it's £120, but it doesn't take up that much space and definitely works.
https://smile.amazon.co.uk/FOLA-Portable-Electric-Clothes-Wardrobe/dp/B0BJ8QNMG8/
I use this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07LBJWLZT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's great and last a long time
Wouldn’t say so. If you were to buy, it would be pricy.

Razer Basilisk X Hyperspeed -... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07Y8QWZDW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Cheaper - light but a bit bigger
I recently switched from 3 to o2 to get the volt benefits with virgin media (broadband speed boost and double mobile data). I've found the 4G data speed on o2 is about a 10th of what I was getting through 3 and a lot more patchy. It will depend on how close you are to a mast and how saturated the network is in the area however if you have an android phone then try the Mastdata app that includes network coverage maps.
You could check out codecademy for some interactive courses. I'd try python if you're staying from scratch. You might find something on Coursera as well, something like this? But no idea what Glasgow Uni's like for comp sci.
Their core offering is awesome, best in the UK for most people who can't get an independent like Hyperoptic, but their website & customer service has a lot to answer for. Also the routers they give you are pretty meh.
Most people complaining their 'wifi is shit' is because they use the modem-router that VM give you which because they're giving to everyone is a budget conscious offering.
Put it in modem mode, get a decent WiFi router from Amazon or wherever and use Ethernet when possible.
Here's a speedtest I did a few hours ago: https://www.speedtest.net/result/9939140619.png
Over here again for the Meaco - I got this one.
It's amazing, and I have it in the doorway of the living room and hallway. This makes sure it reaches all the rooms in my tiny flat. (It does up to 5 rooms). The weird thing about it is that it actually heats up the living room enough to not need heating on, which is a cool money saving tip. Laundry dries quicker too!
You can get 10m of cat6 for £9 off Amazon, but if OP desperately needs it today Screwfix might be the better option.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07ML45FCQ/ref=pe_3187911_189395841_TE_dp_1
Are the ones I bought for my kids, 3+ years at this point every night and havent had a problem
Well, if you had one of these cheap locks , no wonder. Buy a proper lock
On the one hand I think anyone attempting to create this for Shawlands would be lucky to end up with an 8-page zine :-
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bands-BK-Guide-Brooklyn-Everyone/dp/1735145858
On the other hand as someone much happier living Southside than where I grew up in East Kilbride, and aware of the jaw-dropping amounts people pay in the US/Canada to live in a walkable metro area without needing a car, I feel I hit it lucky moving here in 2015. I can think of plenty of cooler places I could never afford to live in, and plenty of places so hip the locals wouldn't deign to speak to the likes of me, but I could do a lot worse. Of course, I'd like to set a time machine and live somewhere both cheap and cool, like Prague in 2003 with Staropramen 40p a pint, but I'd probably make a lousy English teacher and can't think of any other kind of job I could do there.
I did it, I have a foldable cat carrier kinda like a duffel bag with mesh windows.
You can get powdered dashi, miso and wakame in most asian places. Chung Yings does daikon (mooli in Chinese). Not the south side tho the city centre. the best miso I’ve tries was on amazon you can’t get it in the shops link here

Assuming you don't want privacy, consider open-backed headphones for that bigger sound that's closer to sounding like a set of speakers. Somebody mentioned Grados, which I adore, but now prefer the Fidelio X2's as they have a better low end and are by far the most comfortable headphones to put on my head.
If your looking for a stud I would recommend a bog standard magnet. I ended up buying one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/The-StudBuddy-Magnetic-Stud-Finder/dp/B00E4690X after giving up with the electronic ones
If they actually are plasterboard, consider using something like Grip-Its - but as it is a tenement, I'd be surprised if there were an abundance of stud walls in it. I live in a 1bed tenement and have got about 3 stud walls in the place, everything else is either old plaster over brick, or new dot-dabbed plasterboard and plaster in places that I had to pull the walls back to brick and re-plaster cos the old plaster was totally fucked.
Sounds like they might be fungus gnats, I had a tonne of em in the last house.
Was because of houseplants being overwatered. If you've got houseplants get the soil covered up with these bad boys https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CHJO7I8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
Might seem daft but they let water through, the wee flies can get in under it but the new ones cannae make it back out.
Give it a few days and there'll be way less and eventually you'll just see the odd one
I had this problem last year, and eventually found some on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Viceroybedding-Curtains-INCLUDING-MATCHING-VICEROY/dp/B01FWF55DE/
These ones aren't blackout, if that's a concern.
My mate runs a couple of vans, I've also done a couple of shifts in them.
So there is a big difference between your hipster upmarket food trucks and your greasy-cheap food trucks here in Scotland. The hipster, upmarket trucks, which I assume is what your referring too are mainly operated at events like beer gardens, festivals and street parties under invitation / application of the event organiser.
Go to the Fringe in August in edinburgh if you'd like to do a bit of research. Markets/Streetfood hubs like the Pitt in Edinburgh or platform in Glasgow have some rotating and some permenant vendors. They are essentially permenant mini festivals. Vendors might have a mobile truck they park there or get a residency at venues with a unit.
Someone also published a book about the trucks in Scotland here...
I'm not an expert on the licenses, but I'm 99% sure you can't just pull up a truck and start serving food like you might be able to in the states.
From working with these guys across the fringe and also being mates with them it's a tight knit community but it's hard fucking work. Staffing seems to be a constant issue for them as it's odd shifts obviously!
I used one of these makes storage much easier.
grab a Hyper X Cloud 2 from Currys, then can pair them with Brainwavz Earpads For ATH M50X, M50XBT, M40X, M30X, HyperX, SHURE, Turtle Beach, AKG, ATH, Philips, JBL, Fostex Replacement Memory Foam Ear Pads & Fits Many Headphones (see list), Black Oval https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MFDT894/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ANKR7SZYH8KB293HDWGX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Popular choice for gamers is between hyperx cloud 2 or the gpro that I linked above. GPRO is better than hyperx in terms of mic quality and is currently on 43% discount on amazon, so if I was looking to buy headphones I'd go for that one.
I’ve got an indoor one and it’s superior to any fixed one I’ve ever had, HD channels and everything. I’ll link the one I bought below (piece of piss to set up) TV https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B081T6HQ2L?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Offline, there is a whole range of books with old photos. This is one I found for Shawlands:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Old-Shawlands-Newlands-Sandra-Malcolm/dp/1840337648
Amazon probably isn't the best for these, there's a whole pile of them in Waterstones covering different areas.

If it is the handset in your flat they are easy to swap out. I've replaced old handsets in my last two flats. You can buy replacements online. New for old will be fine too.

This is the last one I bought.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004ULLVM6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Just take a photo of the wiring when you open it so you know what colours go where.
If you can get a manual online for the old handset that'll help but isnt essential.
Don't bother with Mr Muscle, that stuff doesn't do anything, if it's a shower it's probably hair and you want the proper shit to deal with it: https://www.amazon.co.uk/HG-Liquid-Drain-Unblocker-1L/dp/B000IU3VS0/
Available from all good hardware stores
(if it's not hair, then a couple of kettles of hot water and a good go with a plunger will normally suffice)
I used to have two cats and actually had them using this lol believe it or not . You never know might like the grass sensation on paws
If this ever comes back in stock (or you want to take my toaster)
It claims to be a 4-slice toaster, but it's far too shallow to take anything but four half-loaf slices of regular bread. Full-size slices always poke out of the top.
But it's a great 2-slice Mother's Pride toaster.
Toasters are a life lesson - either buy a cheap one that can be replaced often or go large and by a Dualit as it can be repaired. Do no spend money on a mid range semi expensive toaster (or even a smeg one) as they will not last any longer.
I can recommend the Dualit, but I'd be equally happy with the long slice toaster from Amazon.

It's not quite the same thing, but if she's interested in space in general, maybe buy her the game Kerbal Space Program (you design and fly rockets for little green aliens). It can often be found discounted now they're developing version 2.
An app I've found is quite good at identifying stuff in the sky: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lavadip.skeye
> I also bought her a star - but I've no clue where to start with that.
First things first, do you have somewhere to put it?
I don’t as it was a cheap one bought off eBay many, many years ago. Speed triples might have fancier computers than Bonnies but if it has an obd2 port then any cheap reader should work.
This one is similar:
WOHOOH Universal OBD2 Scanner Engine Fault Reader, Read Clear Codes with LCD Display, View Freeze Frame Data, I/M Readiness Smog Check CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool, 5 Language Support (Red) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B089LWYLQP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_NZSVRSZJPDFA14B9AE8B
Great idea! If you end up needing to get one, and the cat won’t give theirs up, here’s the one I use.
Terrible idea. OP is afraid of Mice. They hate meeces to pieces. Cats often bring home small gifts for their owners.
Best solution is be sure not to give them anything to scavenge for Make sure all bins are carefully disposed of. Use peppermint and clove scented defuses or but the sprays and spray them around areas particularly where they might gather for food.
get the openstreetmaps app and switch base profile to cycling and turn on cycle routes.
or this link should bring it up for you..

Look for the outlined routes like the 7,75,74,756
I've found a nice loop to follow the 75 out to newton, there is an unnumbered path that connects to the 756 and loops back into the city near the police station. There are some major climbs, but it gives you some fantastic views and any of the on-road bits are super quiet.
You've mentioned that you have poor mobile signal in your house and that's going to be your problem with any kind of mobile / 4g /5g routers; they need a decent mobile signal.
Do your housemates use different mobile networks? Pick the one with the strongest signal and turn on wi-fi hotspot. Beware, if they have a small data allowance then don't run a speed test (fast.com) as this can burn a lot of MB but be good to know if you can get a decent speed (say 20MB/sec minimum) .
If signal useable then you can look at mobile solutions (unlimited PAYG sim, cheap mobile router). Not a good idea to run hotspot on mobile for extended periods, it'll get hot and might get fucked.
If money is an issue, maybe you could create an Amazon wishlist with a blender like this one so that I can buy you it. Then you can just buy ingredients and make drinks tailored to your mum's tastes.
Sorry if the offer is insulting, it's just something I went through when my nan first had dementia and my mum had cancer so it breaks my heart when loved ones suffer unnecessarily. Hope things get better for you and your family.
I got one of these laptop bags from Amazon about 6 years ago and it's still going strong - link
Like others have said, for basic office wear, the bigger supermarkets like Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's all do decent enough stuff that won't break the bank
I was in similar situation, though in my case it was Vodafone's fault so they gave me a mobile wi-fi router until they actually installed the router.
It was ok-ish for 2 weeks or so, but anything more than that would be a stretch. I mean it is fine for general work, but video calls were quite choppy. They gave me this thing:

There's one at Bellahouston park. There's an unofficial one in Glasgow Green too.
Unfortunately dog parks really aren't a thing in the UK.
At the cost of a clone (~£1.50) this sounds good, at ~£20 for an 'official' Arduino it seems like overkill.
Arduino has been a real shit show for years now. Taking one another to court, infighting and the fact that they talk up their work while barely acknowledging the fact the essentially (more to the point needlessly) forked wiring, which did all the ground work and even paid some of team Arduino to work on wiring. Then they make claims they belted Arduino out in 3days.....
Its open hardware, get a clone. Supporting either camp of team Arduino (oh yeah, they split) seems like an expensive waste of time. They have not inovated and the marketplace is chock full of better cheaper alternatives ( see ESP8266 for a cheap replacement the Teensy boards blow Arduino out of the water in every respect)

I got this stuff from B and M - it's great. I've stuck the battery boxes to the top of the window frame with the lights hanging.

Unless you are living in a faraday cage.
You will get around 250 to 350 mb using these.
Easy to set up and you can control via app
Mesh network is your answer. They just plug in to normal outlets.
Where you have a shortage of outlets get an extension with USB sockets like this:
Gumtree search for "flat to rent" in Glasgow
There are cheaper ones in southside or East End, which will take longer to travel but within 45 min. Have a wee browse and good luck!
