One of my favorite menubar apps:
<strong>Caffeine</strong> is a tiny program that puts an icon in the right side of your menubar. Click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers
I've had the same problem with my Mac and had it checked out and they couldn't find any issues that would cause it to overheat. Installed smcFanControl and no longer have the overheating problem. Used to be hot to touch with minimal programs running. Brings down the temperature in a few minutes.
It's because mail apps on OS X don't use a background helper app to check for email -- they just check for email themselves. If you shut down the app, email checking stops. This app might do what you need, but it looks a bit stale: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32217/notify-pro
The touchpad will be your new best friend. Might i suggest BetterTouchTool. It will allow you to create custom gestures for specific programs.
Ran a google search for you, and this might interest you:
SoundSource app or PTHVolume app for software solutions. Also read this:
>Also in Snow Leopard if you hold option and click the sound icon in the upper Right of the Mac it will bring down a menu similar to what the above mentioned 3rd party plugins do.
Hope this helps...
I'm not sure if it would help those with the issue, but smcFanControl allows for more aggressive fan settings. I've used it on my 2009 MBP 15" to keep things cool.
There are apps for that™. No hardware modification needed.
First, on your old installation, if you have any drm enabled purchases from iTunes, go ahead and deauthorize that computer from your account. (this way, you don't waste one of the five authorizations on a system that "technically" won't exist anymore)
Next, use Super Duper (free to do what you need to do) to clone your internal drive to an external drive. (having a clone of your old system is vital to a reinstall, because without one you will always lose a few things in the transition that you didn't think you needed to keep, but wish you had, and things you simply forgot about)
Next, reformat the internal (or system, whatever you're calling it) hard drive (you'll do this from disk utility somewhere in the menu bar (I think in the utilities menu) when running off the install disk).
Next, reinstall the OS. Once that is done, and before you do anything else, run the software update over and over until everything is updated.
At this point, you will reinstall any software you want to have, like you said.
Next, activate this computer in iTunes to play any DRM protected music or video.
Finally, copy the things you know you want to keep like documents and your music and video library.
Keep that external drive around for a few months. You'll come across a few things you'll need that you would have forgotten about otherwise, like maybe saved games that are stored in weird places, or Slide Pad notes, things like that.
After this, you should be pretty well set up.
Actually Caffeine does not prevent the computer from sleeping when the lid is closed. Caffeine is meant to be a way to temporarily disable automatic sleeping without messing with your settings in System Preferences. It cannot prevent sleeping caused by closing the lid.
Either NoSleep (Simpler) or InsomniaX (More Advanced) are what you need. These applications actually use kexts to modify the kernel, which is the only way to accomplish what you are after.
How is this different from the free alternative, Fluid?
edit: I'd like to bring the attention to an app that /u/bzgoldman "created": Sunlight
It's a direct copy (with strings and graphics changed) of the free app, Spectacle. If you don't believe me, check out the app on MacUpdate.
I have 10+ years owning a mac tech support business. Here's what you need to know. These steps will solve 90% of the problems you will encounter.
Repair disk permissions using Disk Utility.
Start up with a safe boot by holding the shift key. (checks filesystem, rebuilds some caches, etc...)
Clear user caches at ~/library/cache
Use console.app to check log files for any errors.
Use Activity monitor to track down apps using up too much processor/memory.
Use DiskWarrior to rebuild and optimize HFS+ directory.
Use iDefrag to defrag, with Metadata only algorithm selected.
Onyx is great for solving some of the more obscure issues.
I'm a non-programmer but not computer illiterate.
I know I can execute UNIX commands in Terminal.
Also, I believe you can install things (like Python or Ruby), and then execute commands using that "language".
Finally, I know some programs are also able to be controlled from the Terminal. Then you can give those programs commands without having to navigate the UI (which is handy when you want to give a program many commands, or you want to give it commands automatically without user input).
If there's any option, I prefer not to use the Terminal (for example, I know I can batch encode in Handbrake using the Terminal, but I rather use a no-longer-supported piece of software named HandBrakeBatch).
Same name for the app, same subreddit name, if you did a Google search for "orangered mac os x" his site is the first thing that pops up, he's already listed in MacUpdate under this name, and his is open source.
You have to admit, it doesn't look so great. I think you should at the very least consider changing the name of your app. I know it's not like anyone owns "Orangered" but someone has the exact same app as you with the same name made a year earlier that he's trying to monetize right now. You sort of screw over his existing userbase by taking that name.
> I'm just doing this the way I envisioned it.
Right, and that's fine if it's just a hobby. Once you start trying to sell something though you should do a little due diligence to see if the app already exists or if the name is already used.
If you launched a video player called VLC, I would say the same thing.
Listen, I know engineering isn't computer science, but in the real world you're going to have to know have to deal with files you're sent. You should also install a flipside or whatever the retarded mac name for a dual boot is, so that you can run windows programs on windows in case of compatibility issues. I guarantee you've got at least one classmate that can help you with that, find them. In the meantime, this download should allow you to open RAR archives. The link is in the comma after "meantime" so that you'll actually read this post instead of just jumping to the link. Inside the rar are the pdfs of each individual problem.
It would probably by easier if you told us why you suspect this. Then launch Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal. Enter the following:
launchctl list
This will give you a list of everything that OS X starts up on boot. Anything you don't recognize or suspicious looking?
Next, System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Login Items tab. Look for anything suspicious or anything you didn't install.
Finally, Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor. Make sure to select All Processes in the drop down menu beside the search box. Check there for processes for apps that you don't appear to be running in Finder. There aren't many Mac keyloggers so finding one shouldn't be too difficult if there is one.
Then they quietly dropped Silverlight, which was their competing not-invented-here browser technology (and which of course only works on Windows).
Perform a DDoS on /r/circlejerk.
The easiest way to do this is to go out and buy a 27 inch iMac from your local Apple Store. Once you have the iMac in your home, connect it directly into your home's fuse box (we want this to have MAXIMUM POWER). Once you're all powered up and ready to take on the /r/circlejerk servers, download and install Netscape Navigator for Mac and head on over to /r/circlejerk with it. The mere presence of your supercharged Macscape Navigator machine will blow up the part of the internet that is connected to /r/circlejerk. They'll think twice before messing with you again.
Get Lyrical works like a charm for me. It has an active tagging option, or you can tag selection, or tag current. Here's a link if you want to check it out.
Well, mono managed to do it with winforms. I would imagine that WPF has more of a hard dependence on DirectX.
However, something to take away is that silverlight was never just an option for windows. They also maintain it for OSX.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26623/silverlight
While the technology isn't identical, the XAML rendering engine is already available on non-windows based targets.
Here is a description of some of the differences.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc917841(v=vs.95).aspx
If they open source it, I will work on it myself to get it ported.
Oh, BUT IT CAN!
With ControllerMate, although I'm sure there are free options.
Although I think the game should be put out with correct controller support, but it doesn't seem like that will ever happen. :|
People are saying Handbrake, which is the best for converting stuff... but if you ever want to just stream, you should totally check out PS3 Media Server. It's free and once you do some super basic configuration (basically just telling it which folder to share), it's literally one click and then you're streaming. I haven't used a flash drive for months now.
Best part is, if the file in question isn't compatible with the PS3, it automatically converts it as it streams with zero lag. It can also attach subtitles, something the PS3 sucks at by itself.
EDIT: Also it works for more than just video. For example, now when I wanna change my wallpaper on the PS3, I can just navigate to my wallpaper folder on my computer and copy it over. Works great for streaming music too.
I've been using BetterSnapTool for a few months now. It's great and cheap in the App Store. BetterSnapTool lives in the menubar, has global hotkeys, and can be disabled or customized on a per-app basis. Wonderful support for external monitors. There's even a keyboard shortcut to Maximize a window on the next monitor. I love it and use it every day.
np, looks like PeerGuardian might be what I'm after. However it doesn't appear to have an http exception like the windows version, so one has to enable during P2P activity, and disable for browsing/IM/etc lest legit connections be blocked.
There are a lot of reasons not to use Chrome, but that complaint about Safari is a common one. Try the AllPagesZoom extension.
I think your best bet is Scid vs. Mac. It's what I use to store/comment/analyze all of my OTB games after the fact. It can be slightly painful to learn how to use some of the functions, but it comes with some built in engines and it's not too hard to download a free copy of the stockfish binary and plug it in to use.
You could try LiteIcon to change the icons or change them manually. (Select App, Ctrl+I, select Icon in the upper left, Paste previously copied Mavericks-icon from Clipboard with Ctrl-V, or just drag and drop it onto it)
On a Mac, I'd say the same thing. Actually, more likely a bad GPU.
Apple likes to keep the fans very very low to keep your Mac quiet and unobtrusive. Unfortunately, the fans often don't kick on soon enough to prevent overheating. Prolonged overheating can cause issues with the GPU, in my experience (had the same problem with my iMac).
You can try to cool it by cranking up the fans using a tool like SMCcontrol. If your Mac stops having issues, you know it's a heat problem. Only thing is Apple really don't acknowledge the problem, and of time it'll just get worse. And of course you're wearing out the fans by running them high. Cranking up the fan gave me an extra year before it started crashing left and right regardless of how fast I had the fans going.
Onyx is freeware that can run a whole bunch of scripts to clear caches and maintain the OSX system. It's not the most glamorous piece of software tho.
Cocktail is Onyx in a pretty bow, plus a little more, for the tiny price of $20, does the job, and looks good while doing it.
Mackeeper is not good software and should be avoided at all costs. It is harshly criticised for its shady business practices and doubtful benefits to overall system health.
I'd recommend The Unarchiver over Stuffit Expander. No one uses Stuffit format anymore and Unarchiver can unpack pretty much anything out there.
Side note: I found Boot Champ to be a very handy little utility that allows you to boot fast into Windows in an easy way on the fly, without re-configuring your boot options in System Prefs or using keyboard options.....
It looks like you have corrupt font caches.
Download this app, read the instructions and nuke your font caches. The OS will rebuild new font caches after your Mac reboots.
FontNuke for Mac - Removes font cache files. MacUpdate.com
Well I could be that asshole and say it's because you have a Mac, but that's obvious. You will need to install drivers for reading from the NTFS file system format. This was the first result on Google: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
There is an app called InsomniaX that does this. Not sure if it is compatible with Lion however.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22211/insomniax
Thats a download link. It says support for Snow Leopard nothing about Lion.
Winclone is no longer being developed, http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/25932/winclone. There is no lion compatible version. This thread discusses some hacks, http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1030012
Even though it's not abnormal if you want to be able to control your fan speed and cool it down a bit more than it would automatically then i suggest installing SMC Fan Control:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol
Basically you can make some presets with higher fan speeds and then use those settings for a while and then switch back to default mode whenever the extra fan speed is not needed.
You can download BetterTouchTool and completely change your gesture preferences. It's a pretty powerful little program. I have four finger swipe-up set back to 'Show Desktop'.
I'm not sure why it happens, but I do know how to fix it. Open a Terminal window and paste the following: /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
EDIT: Or, if you're not comfortable with the command line, use Onyx to rebuild launchservices (Maintenance > Rebuild > launchservices).
Try Waltr : drag and drop. That's it! Otherwise, I also use the free software FLV Crunch which lets you convert any type of file in the desired format: MP4, AVI, MP3, FLV, M4A, MOV etc.
You can use a free app called insomnia X and it won't go to sleep. I use it all the time to use external when not plugged in.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22211/insomniax
Edit: added link to app
There is a technique of mapping sites to local host, using the hosts file. Hosts preference pane can allow you to fix it. Just delete those entries you don't want mapped to local host.
My 13" mid-2012 MacBook Pro gets regularly hot when running excessive tasks. It once shut down whilst playing on The Walking Dead Season One through Steam and after that I installed smcFanControl. I boost the fans to 6000rpm when playing games or converting heavy files.
The way I see it, Apple wouldn't allow these things to get up to 98degrees C if they couldn't take it, but after that one shut down, I just wanted to be on the safe side.
This one is supposedly great for Windows, soon to be released for Mac, atleast thats what it says on the website. I dont personally use it (since I only have a Mac) but from the looks of it, it seems very good!
This one is exclusively for Mac, and it is the one that I use. It is really awesome to be completely honest. Easy downloading and great features for importing into iTunes. Only annoying thing is that when you go to quit the app itself, it displays a message to donate to the developer for his hard work (which is warrarnted, I'm not saying it isn't), but this can be disabled by entering a code that you receive from him after you donate!
I don't know which one you have (in regards to Windows or Mac) so I listed both here for you. From what I've heard, these two are good (and I can personally vouch for the second, thing is greaattttt). Hope this helps you and everyone else out a bit!
Just a reminder, these are applications that you download to your computer, as opposed to plugins that you install to your web browser. I dont know if you were specifically looking for add ons but if you were I apologize!
i use Afloat. the website says it's for 10.7 but it's been working fine on mavericks. you can even set a shortcut to keep things "afloat." i would say the only downside to it is that it doesn't work with a lot of programs
Welcome to the Mac Party! If you can understand Win 7, you will understand OSX... I had the same fear when I switched ~7 years ago and I have yet to look back.
Things you should install the instant you get it home:
Prey - A free, open source tracking software that can track the location, IP addresses, and takes a webcam snapshot of whoever is using your computer if it's stolen/lost. My roommate had his MBP stolen last month and the police we able to track down the culprit with Prey and return his laptop.
Sophos Anti-Virus Although Macs aren't prone to PC viruses, there is still plenty of malware out there!
Deeper allows you to fine tune the settings and controls in ways that OSX won't allow you to out of the box (things like log-in screen background, appearance, etc.)
Other than that, enjoy!
try resetting NVRAM ? see : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
kernel panics can also be brought on by bad / failing ram... you can try installing applejack and using the optional memtest install (read, then follow the directions included re memtest).
Does the Wacom you have use RS232 or ADB?
I doubt your Mac has a serial port and it definitely doesn't have ADB if it's from 2010.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/14661/tabletmagic might make it work if the Wacom is serial and your Mac has the right port.
I use Enqueue
It's fast, reliable, and supports FLAC. Also, the developer actively updates the UI and features.
Edit: If you prefer a different taste, check out Clementine
If you like Chrome but don't "trust Google". Try Chromium, the true open source version of Chrome. All of the functionality without the "shadiness" some people associate with Google products.
Most useful and simple app hands down. It stays on your menubar and whenever you need to boot into windows, just hit the option in the drop-down menu. You can even choose whether you want to always boot into Windows.
http://www.macworld.com/article/142379/2009/08/snow_leopard_64_bit.html
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4287
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32252/32--or-64-bit-kernel-startup-mode-selector
Those links should help explain 64 bit mode and let you decide if you want to go into that mode.
I will give you some pointers and help you to solve the problem, however first, I must point out the reason nobody is answering you.
The reason nobody is answering your question, is not because nobody "will" answer it, rather it is because your question is titled very poorly and screams "don't look at me – I am spam!"
Not a good title: CAN A REDDITOR PLEASE HELP TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION?
This title is bad because it is written in capitals. Do not use capitals. It is also bad because I have no idea what the contents of the post are.
Not a good title: Can someone help answer this question? Nobody either can or will.
This title is bad because I still have no idea about the contents of the post.
Good title: [self] Chrome on OSX: Youtube will not load, help?
Note how the good title introduces the subject of the post in the title, so I know exactly what to expect, and know immediately whether I am able to help or not.
To be honest, the only reason I am reading this at the moment is because it is posted in the correct subreddit and I was curious.
Now to your question. A few things you can try:
Update Google Chrome
If you have the AdBlock extension installed, ensure that the option to "Block Ads Inside Youtube Videos" is DISABLED
Turn off the reddit toolbar through the reddit options. Does it work now?
What happens if you go to www.youtube.com ? Can you browse and watch videos now?
Try Chromium, the open source project upon which Chrome is based. You can download an updater from: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32856/chromatic/
These are some steps you should take to help diagnose the problem.
Cheers.
EDIT: Added option 5 and changed to an unordered list to imply options rather than sequence
It looks like the guy who made the original screensaver has been MIA since 2006 and hasn't updated it, but some awesome people have taken it upon themselves to make updates for it and it just keeps getting better apparently. It's one of the few really good TNG screensavers out there that I have found. Either way, thought you guys would appreciate it probably more than anyone.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx
Great little utility thats been around for ages. Freeware that enables you to run UNIX commands for the not-so- Unix inclined.
Its good to run most of the scripts and cleaning utilities before major OS updates. Hopefully this will help you reset any inconsistencies you have in your system. Be aware there are different rev.'s for each OS build at the bottom of the link there. Good luck.
Another suggestion I have is to try http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/50723/smbconf This will switch your SMB3 to 1or2
I use Subler to embed metadata to .mp4 files for my home media server. However, I don't use social media so I don't know how such metadata integrates with those platforms.
Premiere supports metadata, but I believe it's in the form of .xml attachments and not embedded in the file. Once again, though, I don't know how that that might integrate with social media.
Use SymbolicLinker to create easy symlinks to Logic's required folders. You'll need to figure out which folders though; your plugins and the app itself won't take up much room, but any samples will. I suggest you keep the app in applications.
SymbolicLinker hasn't been updated for years but still works on my El Cap installation.
howdy dylanthepiguy2,
i found the items below via a web search for "mac osx merge aac tracks". they look like what you are seeking.
iTunesJoin
- http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/17999/itunesjoin
Join Together
- http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/21391/join-together
hope that helps,
lee
There is a neat program I use on my Retina 15": Switch Res X http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/8355/switchresx Its nice to be able to use full retina, and even simulate higher rez.
Although Ive found that full retina is the only useful resolution past the default scaled ones, and resolutions in between do not scale evenly (hence OSX leaving them out)
I would go with a cheap time lapse cam, which you can program and leave somewhere for an extended period of time. I use the Wingscapes cameras (the old version here works better than the new version, but both work) at a remote site in the arctic year-round and they hold up pretty well. Not super expensive, and you won't have the absurd amount of data you're talking about here. Usually a year of pictures captured during peak light hours turns into a 2-minute video by the time things are said and done with. If you're on a mac, check out the TimeLapse Assembler for putting everything together at the end.
Options:
Install Google Chrome (the browser) + Google Cast Extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast/boadgeojelhgndaghljhdicfkmllpafd?hl=en
borrow a friend's smartphone or tablet and install the Chromecast app (iOS or Android)
try with the old one: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/54736/chromecast
install Windows in a VM (e.g. VirtualBox) and use the installer for Windows
ask Google for a workaround: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/chromecast
I think caffeine keeps the screen from falling asleep, while the lid is up only. But
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22211/insomniax
keeps it on while lid is down (though I've never tried it).
I used TimeLapse Assembler for Mac... There are a bunch of options and even more for Windows but this runs light and is really good when up/downscaling.
As for the process, I processed the first RAW image, copied the adjustments to all the images I had taken, exported to jpeg and fed them all into the timelapse assembler. Once you set the frame rate (this is 20fps - each image is treated as a frame) & required output resolution, it stitches them all together and spits out a .mov file. I then used Gifrocket to make that .mov into a .gif.
Had the same problem, fan didn't increase in speed until the cpu hit 90-100C. So I got Macs Fan Control and get the fan to follow the cpu temp. This makes the fan increase at whatever temp you like, obviously the computer make a bit more noise when under heavy load, but to me I rather keep my cpu under 80C.
I don't use Photos but there's a a few tools out there for you to edit EXIF metadata in yor files. My personal choice is http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/45375/photo-meta-edit because it allows for bulk edits. It also allows you roll the timestamp forward or backward (e.g. + 8 hours) rather that setting it to static value.
I think the fact that it is prerendered does it immense favors, and in that respect it looks less aged than even RealMyst Masterpiece. It is still incredibly beautiful. It all depends on if you can get passed the fact that it is a slideshow.
AFAIK it runs fine in Windows (Steam and GoG are selling it, after all) but yes it's small––640x480. It's also on iOS, which would make this fact less apparent. You can also play it on the Mac with Riven X here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/49024/riven-x
I really, really hope The Starry Expanse comes out one day...
You need an application called Syngo Fastview, see if you can find a copy of it for Mac! If not you'll need to get Windows and put it on your Mac.
Edit: apparently there is no such thing as Syngo Fastview for Mac, but this app Osirix can open the same files and is native to the Mac:
if you're a graphic designer and use QuickLook a lot, get SneakPeek Pro http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26379/sneakpeek-pro . It is great for stuff like Indesign documents and even shows Pantone plates used in the document
Get used to running *nix commands, learn Bash ASAP. Invest in a USB-> Serial converter and learn how to use Screen, unless you just never touch networking devices.
I recommend grabbing BBEdit for config/text editing. If you do configure network devices, do yourself a favor and grab http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11116/tftpserver - You can set up a TFTP server out of the box but this just simplifies the process for you.
Take advantage of swiping left/right through multiple desktops. Additionally, set up a Windows VM. I recommend VirtualBox as it's free and works fine. Already mentioned in the thread, but get Microsoft Remote Desktop over in the AppStore, it's pretty much the only RDP worth mentioning.
That really depends on what type of app you want to run your cam through.
My suggestion would be to find a web cam widget for Dashboard (and enable Dashboard in System Preferences > Mission Control) or even better - for the Today pane of the Notifications panel. If you can't do the latter, you can make the Dashboard widget show on the Desktop by following this guide.
Here's a web cam Dashboard widget: https://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/webcams/webcams.html I haven't tested it to see if it can do local cams or just web cams, I'll leave that to you.
Otherwise, a free app like IP Camera Viewer would work fine, assuming your web cam has an IP. If not, have a look around that linked site for a webcam equivalent. I've linked to this one as it's the first free one I found.
This feature is built into Logic. In Pro Tools or other DAWs there are third party apps like MidiKeys.
There's Scid vs. Mac, a Mac version of Scid vs. PC. A bit clunky but does everything and is free.
You can download the Stockfish engine binary to stick into Scid vs Mac, but Stockfish also has its own standalone Mac app. I haven't tried that one.
There's also Shredder, which is not free. It's nice for playing against, because it can automatically adjust to your level and many people have commented on its "human-like" moves relative to other engines.
It's not as powerful as Gibbed, but Bordertool 2 is a fully-functional save editor for Borderlands that you can use on a Mac. That's what I've used before. You lose a lot of functionality, however. It becomes pretty much only good for gear and quickly finishing a quest you already started.
Which means that even though you can instantly put yourself in UVHM as a level 72 Psycho, you'll still start at the beginning of the game and have to run through it once. If you don't mind that, then there's your solution. Otherwise, you'll probably have to search online for someone's completed save file, edit that into your save files folder, and then toss out whatever gear you don't want to gift yourself.
Windows? Try DeskScapes. Unfortunately it is not free. 9.99. Not sure what filetypes will work, but converters are easy to find.
If you want a free alternative and are on Win7 or Win8 (not 8.1), you may be able to get DreamScene working. DreamScene was made by Microsoft for Vista Ultimate and I have seen where some have gotten it working on 7 and 8.
On Mac, you would need to convert the file to Quartz with Apple's quartzcomposer and use something like NerdTool.
edit: wrong program name
I just found this one that works well enough: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/25390/get-lyrical
Grabbed an album of Johnny Cash lyrics for me with no problem.
edit: best for very popular stuff. Couldn't find but 2 out of 12 Allen Toussaint tracks, while the first google link for "song artist lyrics" gives me a hit. It must be using a specific site.
You can use automator, but the easiest way is using one of those renaming apps. This is the one I have been using for the last years. It's free and it does the job.
Use ddrescue! So much better than dd for this. You'll need the gddrescue
package -- this is the name given to it on Debian-based systems, but it may be different based on your linux distro.
Install it then use the following options:
ddrescue -Sv infile outfile
Where infile
is the /dev/sd_drive
. The -S
flag will store the free, unused space on your sdcard as 'sparse' space on the filesystem (assuming your filesystem supports it), saving a lot of space in the process.
Edit: I now see you're on a Mac. Try the GUI! http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/47536/ddrescue-gui/
Ah ha! You've replaced your hard drive, haven't you?
That item "M4-[...]" is a hard drive serial number, and 32°F is clearly a failed reading. The SMC's failsafe in the event of failed temperature readings such as this is to blast the fan at full capacity.
Best you can do is use third party software to keep the SMC in check. Personally I recommend smcFanControl.
Or... You know.... call me a fucktard for wanting the window buttons in OSX to behave predictably (ie: green = maximise) but RightZoom is a happy solution.
Thank you for posting, I totally forgot to do that :P Last week I configured my own home server, here there are two apps that proved to be really useful:
iOS:
Prompt 6,99 €
Beautiful SSH client by Panic (still with iOS 6 graphic, but they said that they will update it soon). It supports ssh keys, too!
OS X:
Bar Magnet, free
It allows you to send torrent files and magnet links to remote or local torrent server front-ends just by opening them. Must have if you've got a torrent server.
You could try iTunification. It displays the current song as a notification.
Searching and skipping tracks from the Notification Center is not possible, since a notification cannot have buttons.
I came across an application called RightZoom that supposedly makes the useless green button into a useful maximize button. I haven't had time to check it out yet, though, so it could do nothing at all for all I know! But I thought I'd throw it out there.
I've encoutnered this a few times here at work. In fact I know one machine which I will proably be forced to take it into service soon. The video card is indeed crapping out, probably because of overheating. What happends is, when the computer heats up, both components, the CPU and GPU will get hot. There is only a temperature sensor on the CPU, or at least that's all OSX cares about. It auto adjust the fan of hte computer based on the CPU, not the GPU, leaving the GPU to cook itself if it gets stressed without the fan increasing.
You can probably temporarily alleviate the issue by using this program here and cranking the fan speed to a bit above audiable levels. This has worked for me as a temporary fix, although eventually the computer will have to have the graphics card placed, which last time I did it was a little under $200 (part and labor) from a certified 3rd party apple repair shop.
.rar is a compressed archive file like .zip. You need a program that can unzip it. My cursory research into this brings this up. It's an offshoot of 7-Zip for Windows that works for Mac. It should be able to handle most archive files. Just unzip the .rar and put it in your saves folder.
For those who are terminal illiterate, you can use Onyx.
Go to the General tab in the Parameters window. There you can change the format of the screen capture as well as the destination.
You can follow the instructions in this link to be able to download any soundcloud song or you can use this mac application
You can get smc-fancontrol, which lets you set a manual minimum fanspeed. It might harm your fans if you constantly keep it very high, but at least it will prevent your macbook from overheating.
MacUpdate is a Mac software listing site that's updated multiple times daily. They also state the requirements for each app listed.
Is there something you're looking for in particular? Also, which version of OS X are you running? You can find that by going to the menu and choosing "About This Mac".
BTW, TenFourFox is a fork of Firefox for PowerPC Macs.
For both Windows and Mac, YouTube to MP3 is the highest-rated app out there. And for very good reasons: Small, efficient, does what it says, no crap. Great independent developer.
Check out the scores and comments on MacUpdate.
Here is a link to FontNuke. This is a free app that you can use to delete your font cache files (the OS will rebuild them afterwards).
Download the app, read the instructions and run the app. This should fix your problem.

If you're just bouncing back and forth between Windows and OSX, I recommend BootChamp. Lets you directly boot into Windows from the menubar. Then just use the Boot Camp icon in Window's system tray to boot back.
Restart would be first if you haven't. Maybe setup browsers to delete cache/cookies more often, or do it manually.
You could uninstall programs she no longer uses, as well as check for software updates...These two are my first weapons in the war:

This one costs money, but its sound:
If you're on a Mac, try Genius. Helped me learn over 1000 Latin words in a long weekend, it is brilliant and the only reason I hang on to my nearly dead Mac
If you always carry your iPhone, you could install a route tracker app to watch your mileage. I don't have a preference because I have no need for one, but this one tracks mileage and time. Any GPS-based running trackers would probably be fine.
As for the other things you're looking for, try searching MacUpdate for more Mac specific apps. I know Billings has an iOS app you can sync with the desktop one.
Perdonatemi for stepping on your toes white night. I was hoping pxi would reply so I could help him/her. pxi, if you do come back to your post and libcrypto is right, take a look here. I don't think there's a transparent screensaver or screen locker, but if there is one I'm sure libcrypto can help.
Two programs that may be of use:
Runs while your machine is on. Does cleaning and maintenance. Also does permissions, but I'd run some of the cleaning operations first.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15667/applejack
This runs in single user mode when you are not logged in. Restart the computer holding CMD +S. Once it loads, type in the prompt "applejack AUTO restart". This could help since you won't be logged in so it can do a deep clean and will be less likely to crash.
I'd also add Applejack to your list for troubleshooting. Install this:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15667/applejack
Restart the computer into single user mode (Holding CMD +S immediately on power up). It should boot into a black screen with a bunch of terminal text. Once its done, type "applejack AUTO restart". Auto in caps, no quotations.
It does fixes most other programs won't get to, a deep clean, and restarts your machine when it is done. It's free and effective.
Edit: better link for download
Well, there is no need for standard "uninstallers" like in Windows because you don't need to reverse edits to the registry or anything like that in OS X. However once you run an .app package it needs somewhere to store its associated data, and Apple's dev guidelines say that you shouldn't store that in the .app package. You should put user-specific files in ~/Library/Application Support/, preference files in ~/Library/Preferences, etc... and those files aren't deleted when you just delete the .app package.
This is why programs like AppZapper, TrashMe, and AppCleaner exist, to clear out this leftover cruft without forcing you to dig around your Library folder. I'm hoping that pressing the "x" in Launchpad does something closer to what those programs do. Especially because Apple's own pro applications are notorious for this problem.
