Pixel Dungeon. Great little roguelike.
Edit since this got more attention than I expected:
/r/pixeldungeon
Pixel Dungeon is a neat mobile game. You're a guy in a dungeon, kill stuff, get treasure, and death makes you restart from the beginning.
This is called a "roguelike" game, similar to NetHack or . . . Rogue
The game is free, has no ads, no premium version, and still gets updates occasionally.
.
EDIT: I've had some comments saying this game is not free. There's a desktop version on Steam that costs $2.99, but the mobile version (which is the original version) is free and always has been. Also, there are a few modifications and imitators - some of those mods might be worth trying actually.
EDIT2: ok, apparently not free for Apple devices. Well, sorry about your bad choice in smartphones and tablets.
Pixel Dungeon. It's free, it's open source, it's totally awesome.
Well, these days I don't have any time for phone games, but Pixel Dungeon and Border Siege (a cool Risk adaptation) will always have a dedicated place in my memory.
Pixel Dungeon for Android is fantastic and 100% free (as in beer and liberty).
If you like roguelike games, there's nothing better.
Hoplite was great!
Pixel Dungeon is also great! It's a super solid, retro-style dungeon crawly rougelike. Wonderful game for airplanes &c
I mostly played the vanilla version, though there are now a million remakes that have added a lot of new little details to the game
Check out Pixel Dungeon and its mod, Shattered Pixel Dungeon. Entirely free (on android, apple its a few dollars, but still worth it) with no microtransactions, or any other mobile bullshit that makes me hate mobile games. Not to mention that they are super good and you can spend hours and hours going through this remarkably challenging but rewarding game. You know what the best parts are? It has randomly generated dungeons, so tons of replayability, but its not even hard on your battery.
Seriously, I know i must sound like some paid shill for the game, but its really amazing. Not to mention its mod's and their developers. /u/00-evan is ShatteredPD's dev, and he is also great and active on reddit to answer any questions.
Have you tried Pixel Dungeon before? It's fucking good
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon
Open source, 100% free
Unfortunately, turn based and multiplayer are often mutually exclusive, it's rare to find such games
Not a space game, keep in mind, but a very punishing roguelike involving lots of caution, management, and luck.
Pixel Dungeon is pretty fun and good for multiple playthroughs, just like FTL. You play a character who must descend through a dungeon of monsters, acquiring items through mob drops or finds in randomly generated levels. There is very basic customization at the beginning (choosing between 3 classes who differ in stats, combat, and therefore general playstyle) and the occasional store, just like FTL, where you're likely to be ripped off if you aren't careful. Lots of exploration and general fun in this game.
EDIT: apparently there are 4 classes now, it's been a while since I've played.
Sounds good to me.
The only downside is that then the app would be listed as having In App Purchases. The original Pixel Dungeon for example, is completely free with an option to donate to the dev and it is listed as having IAP.
Just plain old Pixel Dungeon is the original and the guy open sourced it (I guess). It is quite hard and the others are either easier or slight variations on the original.
Original game: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon
C:DDA is a great game, but it doesn't have much in common with DoomRL. While DoomRL is very fast-paced (for a roguelike) C:DDA tends to be quite slow. OP would probably like something like Pixel Dungeon or one of its numerous variants. Or DoomRL for android, if they can make it work.
Definitely try Pixel Dungeon!. It's open source too, and there are a few different versions that have popped up with slightly different systems to suit your taste
I got addicted to Pixel Dungeon a while ago.
Hoplite is pretty cool too.
If you happen to be a fan of dungeon crawlers / roguelikes I recommend Pixel Dungeon. It's free and without any ads.
Every game is unique, as all potions, scrolls, weapons and levels are randomized on each start. The difficulty is quite high (as expected from a roguelike), in part because of perma-death (meaning there's no reloading after death, you have to start over).
Here's what you do.
Pixel Dungeon is a great tile-based design in search of immersion. Crystal Rift is a super immersive tile-based engine in search of a game.
Make them have a baby. Win all my money.
The best part: the author of Pixel Dungeon open sourced it, so the addictive heart of the game is already written for you.
As far as I understand the policy stay the same, but detection software got upgrade.
How this happens?
At first, I got this:
Your app was rejected because it violates our impersonation policy. We determined that your app may mislead users due to similarity between your app's title, icon, or other metadata elements and those of:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon
Then this:
I reviewed your app and had to reject it because it violates our metadata policy.
The app's full description mentions other brands: Pixel Dungeon.
And last objection was:
The app's full description mentions other apps: Pixel Dungeon.
Also, it seems like support do not read mails I send them and just keeps citing impersonation policy.
Don't know if written permission helps...
The exact reason was >Thanks for submitting Skillful Pixel Dungeon (com.bilboldev.pixeldungeonskills) to Google Play. Your app was rejected because it violates our impersonation policy. We determined that your app may mislead users due to similarity between your app's title, icon, or other metadata elements and those of:

An inquire about details lead to this
>I reviewed your app and had to reject it because it violates our metadata policy.
> The app's full description mentions other apps: Pixel Dungeon created by Watabou.
I am not sure removing the reference can violate the GPL as the source code is still given out and credit is given in about section of the app. Do we have to put something in store listing?
Agreed. Try Pixel Dungeon if you haven't heard of it. It's graphical and a somewhat simplified experience, but tries to keep with the spirit of Nethack: the difficulty, success is mostly luck, you die a lot, etc. Also, it's free and open-source just like Nethack. Also, there's several rehashes out there that add functionality.
If you have an android, you might be interested in Pixel Dungeon. It's the same genre (roguelike), so you should probably like it.
Pixel Dungeon (Android, free) (Play Store Link)
A really fun roguelike dungeon crawler. Turn-based. Difficult- you will die quite often and early until you get the hang of it. But it's a lot of fun and fills in time quite nicely. And it's free!
Pixelated Turn based rougelike, you try to reach floor ¿21? to retrieve the amulet of yonder.
Every playthrough everything is randomized, you have some starting classes and potions effect change with every playthrough. for example blue potion can be a healing pot in your first game but a fire or poison potion in your next character.
The shattered fork adds new items and twists and more dificulty to the base game ( was developed by another developer)
Pixel Dungeon or Shattered Pixel Dungeon which adds much to the original. There are many other builds out there too, probably something to suit everyone.
try Pixel dungeon
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon&hl=en
it's an easy roguelike with simple mechanics but still quite a lot of depth. it's a good intro to roguelikes because of its lower difficulty than others and good controls
i'd recommend Pixel Dungeon if you're into roguelikes, or maybe influence for a fun and simple strategy game.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon
I really like this game. It's about 4MB and you get a full rogue like experience. It is turn based so I think you don't really have to worry about the action or about the screen size. Also free offline and open source so you might be interested in it's alternatives.
samvest linked a bunch, but I didn't see Pixel Dungeon. It's hard a heck, with a pretty steep learning curve. Game is completely free, no ads, no timers/stamina limiting gameplay time, and the IAP is just if you want to optionally donate to the dev - so no IAPs.
The dev released the source code, so there's a bunch of spin offs if you want turn try some variations.
Another game Guild of Dungeoneering is a combination of roguelike, deck building, and turn based strategy.
The Pixel Dungeon Google Play store page says there are IAPs. Same with Shattered Pixel Dungeon. Are the IAPs annoying or something silly like an extra potion?
if you like roguelikes, Pixel Dungeon is a good game to get on board with, and the modified version Shattered Pixel Dungeon that adds more stuff to the base game.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon&hl=en_GB
infact, if you just do a search for pixel dungeon on the google play store, you can see there's a fair handful of different variations!
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=pixel%20dungeon&c=apps&hl=en_GB
Pixel Dungeon and it's sister project Shattered Pixel Dungeon are really fun roguelikes with no ads and the IAPs are completely optional "donation packages".
Pixel Dungeon. It's my "nothing to do" game, never leaves my phone. I would sit with you to play it if I could! Sitting alone sucks.
If you like dungeon crawling roguelikes Pixel Dungeon and the various alternatives (like Shattered Pixel Dungeon )are great.
Open source, free, no microtransactions, little to no ads, and enough difficulty, rng, and depth to last you a while.

Not sure if this is the exact game you're talking about, but if not, a pretty good game that's relatively similar to your description is Pixel Dungeon.
Thanks for sharing! I can tell you put a lot of time into it. My first thought is that it reminds me of another game, Pixel Dungeon, so I would try to sell what separates your game from all the others. Your trailer is also a bit long and contains no sound. I would cut it down to 30 seconds - 1 minute tops and highlight all the exciting action.
It's an android game, but Pixel Dungeon is one of my favourites. It's free and open-source so there are a lot of different versions of the game.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon&hl=en
Pixel dungeon. it's free, good mechanics but not a lot of depth, doesn't have a LOT of levels, but still challenging. a very nice intro that you can play on your down time
If you don't have a smartphone and only have a laptop, download Bluestacks the android emulator. It can download straight from the play store and mobile games are pretty much all one-hand/mouse.
Bunch of versions and difficulties of Pixel Dungeon rougelike for free.

I've always recommended Pixel Dungeon. It's a roguelike that I've sunk way too many hours into.
I'd also recommend a mod of it, Shattered Pixel Dungeon. More balanced mechanics and a greater gameplay experience. Sprouted PD is also good if you're into grinding.
Pixel Dungeon. It's a roguelike that I've sunk way too many hours into.
I'd also recommend a mod of it, Shattered Pixel Dungeon. More balanced mechanics and a greater gameplay experience.
So, basically you want a game like Super Mario Brothers, Super Meat Boy, FTL, Dwarf Fortress, Megaman, Contra, The Legend of Zelda (well, the first couple), etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
As others have stated, that is literally a description for the rogue-like and/or rogue-lite pseudo-genre. (I say pseudo-genre because a rogue-like can be any kind of game, from an FPS to an RPG).
Looking for a mobile game like this? Try Pixel Dungeon.
I recommend 'Pixel Dungeon' by Watabou. It's a real, traditional roguelike RPG that will consume your life. It's incredibly hard, but it's free, it's fun, it's constantly updated... Can you ask for more?
Pixel dungeon! It's a fantastic turn based dungeon crawler! With a great combat system and delightful art.

Pixel Dungeon is worth a look if you enjoy roguelikes.
And its derivatives which Reddit seems to love more....
And the are heaps more...
If you haven't seen/tried pixel dungeon, you should check it out.
Hi there! It looks like you're asking:
<em>What are the best free games for Android?</em>
The most-recommended option is <strong>Pixel Dungeon</strong>.

^(I am a bot! For safety, replies to this comment will be ignored. Direct messages will be checked by a human.)
Obvious Pixel Dungeon probably? It was an Android exclusive for quite a long time as well.
I've been circlejerking about the sorry state of mobile gaming for a while for this same reason. Games have gotten so disgusting with what they pull.
(Warning: Pixel Dungeon circlejerking below)
The one example of mobile gaming that still gives me hope is Pixel Dungeon (though it costs a buck on the IOS store) (plug for /r/pixeldungeon) (shilling follows). There is a reason that whenever someone makes an AskReddit thread about "the best mobile apps", this game is always up there. Self-published by Russian developer Watabou as a tribute to old Roguelikes, I've sunk more time than is healthy into this game. Additionally, because the game is open source, it's become a trend to mod the game, with popular ones such as Shattered Pixel Dungeon and Sprouted Pixel Dungeon leading the way as far as my all time favorites. I even programmed my own mod for a couple of months before abandoning it because I'm trash. While I understand that this is far and away the exception, Pixel Dungeon and it derivatives are games that are so full of content and updates that I wouldn't have minded paying $20 for the up front, hell maybe even $60 if I had known how much time I would get out of them (at least 600 hours over the last 5 years, and that's lowballing it). As a mobile game. A turn based pixel-based dungeon crawler game. About as far away from focus tested, generic AAA games as you can get.
I'm sure it would have been easy for Watabou to implement "Pay $1 to save your run," since I first got this game when Temple Run was popular. There may even have been a few times where I wished he had, simply due to my being bad at games. Or he could have paid expansion packs or something similar. But he hasn't. And that's why I'm still playing it to this day. Had a Rogue on Floor 14 before I started watching Jim's episode today. Going right back to it after I finish this sentence.
Also, fuck King. The EA of mobile games.
If you enjoy a rougelike, let me recommend (for Android, at least) Pixel Dungeon.
Pixeldungeon is a VERY solid mobile rogue-like RPG. Free also. Literally nothing to even pay for.
edit: Here's the subreddit, and here's a popular modified/remixed version called Shattered Pixel Dungeon which is even better (which is definitely saying something). You're gonna die, a lot, but it's immensely addicting.
Luckily most RLs are free.
Shiren the Wanderer (SNES/DS) (got your anime cartoony graphics right here! I think the SNES version is much better - I think I'm in the minority though.
OR
Azure Dreams (PS1) - which is a monster collecting roguelike.
Try ADOM (PC) (scroll down past the Buy on Steam link - there's a free download)
or if you have an android device
PIXEL DUNGEON - no IAP purchases (though you can upgrade as a donation it changes nothing about the game).
Or if you think you can handle text-based graphics (the classic ASCII look) try BROGUE. They also have a tiles-graphical version if you reaaaalllly hate ASCII.
Have fun!
Maybe you're looking at the wrong app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon
Pixel Dungeon is pretty good for a beginner and on mobile.
The player experience matters to me, not the developer experience.
As a player, distribution can absolutely impact my willingness to play a game. I really only tolerate three forms of distribution, described below with examples you can compare yourself to.
For a full-blown desktop PC game, my expectation is that I can go to a web page and download the binary to run it on my system. For example:
https://sites.google.com/site/broguegame/home
http://www.thegroundgivesway.com/download/
https://kitchsitch.itch.io/chomp
Worse than these but perhaps acceptable if I really want to try the game, could be an installer. But I have walked away from many games rather than run an installer.
Alternatively, it's okay if I can play right in my browser, for example:
https://ondras.github.io/sleeping-beauty/
(I might load the Unity player into firefox but that's a barrier that might lose me)
Finally, it's okay if it's a game for my phone, in which case I'll want to just go to the app store and install it, for example:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.magmafortress.sdq
But you can lose me on the phone by requiring a lot of permissions or a huge file size.
And all this is before I play the game; once I'm playing you can even more easily lose me in a wide variety of ways in just the first few minutes.
But as a player I don't care one bit what language these games are written in. As a dev, from time to time I might get curious. I've glanced at the code for Brogue, and for Pixel Dungeon, for instance. I know the dev of Sleeping Beauty wrote the ROT.js framework. But these didn't drive my decision to play or not play.
If a game wants me to do some other thing to get it up and running, it's extremely likely that I simply won't play it. I am not installing any python libs or compiling any code. I strongly prefer not to install anything.
I'm not sure if what you're describing would require any of these extra steps, I'm just giving you a sense of how a game can lose me before the play.
As /u/GreedCtrl has pointed out, this topic has been asked many times, so there are a lot of threads you can read. Still, I don't think there's anything wrong with asking it again, lol.
The sidebar here on the right side of /r/roguelikes has a lot of good ones listed, including a specific 'popular mobile roguelikes' section, but there are also quite a few PC ones that have Android versions, too.
<em>POWDER</em> is my personal favorite for gaming on the go, especially since it was NOT designed with keyboard input in mind (it was originally developed for the GameBoy Advance before being ported to everything else, so it has 4-directional movement instead of 8, and very few virtual buttons). As an added bonus, the Android version (and DS version) can also assign custom shortcut icons around the outside of the viewing area, so it's easy to add your most-commonly-used actions. Unfortunately, for some reason, POWDER's creator (Jeff Lait) still hasn't added the Android version to the downloads page. It's also not available on the Google Play Store, so you'll have to side-load it from the APK...
<em>Pixel Dungeon</em> is an Android mainstay that has been forked into many awesome variants, but the original game is brilliant as well. For a bit of added tactical depth and a lot more variety (without becoming ridiculous), my favorite variant of this game is <em>Shattered</em>.
<em>Pathos</em> basically aims to be a mobile equivalent to NetHack, and actually controls very well since its interface was designed from the ground up for smartphones. In my opinion, it's a lot nicer to play than the vanilla <em>NetHack</em> linked by /u/xxxssszzz, especially if you don't have a phone with a keyboard, but try both; your opinion may be different than mine.
<em>Ananias</em> is a game that seems like it was designed to feel simple while still having plenty of tactical depth, and it's quite easy to get started on a mobile device. The free version is a full game, but if you like it, you can also purchase <em>Ananias Fellowship Edition</em> for $2.99 to add 4 more classes (Barbarian, Slayer, Monk, and Sage) and to support the developer.
The WebTiles version of <em>DCSS</em> is available on the Play Store and has had a lot of work done to make it easier for keyboard-free play. It's still pretty easy to tell the game wasn't originally meant for touch screens, though, so it can be fairly clunky to play...
Many old MS-DOS roguelikes (and a few current ones, such as <em>ADOM</em>'s ASCII version) can be played on an Android version of DosBox. I recommend <em>Magic Dosbox Free</em> due to its virtual button feature and the ability to create custom shortcuts. Keep in mind, though, that the free version only supports a limited amount of different games being installed at a time (and I can't remember what the limit is, since I only use it for ADOM). The paid version is only $3.49 right now, though, so I'd say it's worth the money if you have any other DOS games you want to play...
^Edit: ^Forgot ^to ^add ^Pixel ^Dungeon
The creator released the source code for free to encourage modding. The original is by Watabou https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon
Pay-2-Win : This term held away lot of games from me (including Warframe). But then I saw the player count of Warframe and decided to download anyway. And this is the only F2P title that "clicked" with me. I was surprised! Well, I agree withe TB on retiring the term, but I'm still thinking of some way/ to describe games with astonishingly huge amount of grind (that the don't really show you when you first play them, or the paid features not available to free players in anyway, but done in a cheap way
Cinematic : In the video, TB is making the same arguments and points that were made by everyone when AC Unity got released, about the 30 fps excuse and constant use of the word in order to imply a Hollywood films-equse experience with cinematography being used in cut-scenes.
But what if cinematography helps games, instead of crippling them. How can we use camera angles, shot framing, prospective etc. to increase the immersion, or add to overall quality of the experience. Two games that I can think of, that have used this to improve their experience is Shadow of the Colossus and Uncharted (esp. 2,3). SotC had the best horse riding in any video game, thanks to the way camera was set that gave a proper view as well as the overwhleming emptiness of the Forbidden Lands (as well as the input delay in horse command). Also each way the Colossi were introduced, or how camera panned when traversing certain unique parts of the Lands. Not only the cut-scenes, but the way camera and levels were set to help to play game seamlessly without awkward interruptions (like how everything in Indiana Jones movies goes so smoothly, you call it "dumb luck").
I think the first two cannot be solved, however, we should engage in discussion on way to improve the third situation.
Anyways, I recommend everyone to try out Pixel Dungeon for a nice rogue-lite phone game. It's really well made.
www.choiceofgames.com has plenty of interesting apps.
Pixel Dungeon and various remakes and sequels.

Pixel Dungeon has good boss mechanics for a free open source game and follows these guidelines pretty well.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon
Definitely try Pixel Dungeon! Got a few alternative editions other people have made too that are cool too
Try out Pixel Dungeon
How much RP in the RPG do you want? There's stuff like Pixel Dungeon that's very RP lite and is fantasy themed rogue-like, so it's turn based strategy game. Free game, IAP is just if you want to donate to the dev. There's a bunch of spin offs of this after the dev open sourced it.
For a little bit of RP, there's something like Heroes of Steel, which is a top down, strategy rpg with a team of four. There's also a free demo. The demo has IAP to unlock the full version. Full version had optional IAP for something like extra classes. Neither has ads.
Another in a similar vein with more RP is 9th Dawn which has a pretty open world so you can wander around. Premium, no ads, no IAPs. Also a free demo. There's also a sequel out now.
Subreddit: /r/PixelDungeon
It's free on Android and free on Amazon, but it seems to cost $3 on iOS and $5 on Steam.
I wholeheartedly recommend <em>POWDER</em> (the Android version is not on the app store but can be downloaded as a bare apk to side-load). It's a great game, and I always recommend it to friends as a 'beginner' roguelike. It has some depth beneath the surface, but there's no race selection, class is entirely fluid, and focused around your deity (and you can choose to worship no gods, if you don't feel like limiting yourself in some way). It also has no diagonal movement, and since it was originally made for Gameboy Advance, most of the actions are menu-based instead of having all kinds of random buttons on the screen. Easy to figure out, but still has the unidentified loot, character levels, turn-based movement, and most of the other mainstays of roguelike design.
There's also <em>Pixel Dungeon</em>, which is pretty good as well. I personally prefer <em>Shattered Pixel Dungeon</em> to the original, as it has lots of balance tweaks, some interface redesign, and some added content (while sticking with the theme of the original). <em>Sprouted Pixel Dungeon</em> is also quite popular, but has more of a 'kitchen sink' feel to it. Not my taste, but you may like it.

There's always Pixel Dungeon. I don't always play games on my phone, but when I do, it's pixel dungeon.
Pixel Dungeon is open-source. It's actually free.
Pixel Dungeon thank me later.
The original's just called Pixel Dungeon. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon
Right? Pixel Dungeon and several variants (Shattered, Skillful, Moonshine) should be on the list.
Sounds like you want pixel dungeon
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon&hl=en
It's short, fast runs, challenging and turn based!
I got really into Pixel Dungeon but, unfortunately, I found it to be extremely difficult and unforgiving. I then found out about The Greedy Cave and played it for some time, although I ended up quitting due to the lack of interest.
I also played Summoners War and Dungeon Boss but found them both to be somewhat tediously grindy after a while.
I also jumped onto mostly anything with the Square Enix brand, and you can guess how that turned out. First game that I tried out was KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained χ and eventually joined up with a guild but, after a few months of commitment, it became extremely unbalanced and a tedious, time-consuming chore. Next up on the list was FINAL FANTASY Record Keeper and it was quite entertaining but, like with all Square Enix games, it was a grind. I also quit FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS after playing it for a few weeks, although it was what I was looking for in a Final Fantasy mobile game - a take on the old Final Fantasy games. Last but not least, MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY. I played it for a long while, took a long break, and jumped in when it was released on Steam recently, but I came down to the realization that it's just not entertaining.
I don't know what to play. I want something that can be played for a short period of time, while also entertaining if I'm ever stranded without nothing to do for a long time. I'm really into roguelike games at the moment but I also enjoy role-playing games the most.
Well, I think I did say this in the last post, but <em>POWDER</em> is still my go-to roguelike for Android. It's fairly shallow, but I feel it's basically a mix of DCSS and NetHack with a flexible class system (based on your deity) and no races. Anyways, I think most people don't even realize it has an Android version, since it's not on the main site's 'downloads' page for some reason (and has no Google Play release), but you can get it by scrolling down the main page until you get to the 'Ten Years of Development!' post (or by pressing Ctrl+f and searching for "Android", lol). Here's a link if you don't want to bother digging. It says 'beta', but it's been perfectly stable for me...
Edit: <em>Pixel Dungeon</em> is another decent option (especially the <em>Shattered Pixel Dungeon</em> fork), and <em>Ananias</em> is quite different but pretty good...
Pixel dungeon! It's a roguelike, so expect to die often. But it's free, no ads or anything. You can make a donation though.

This sounds like the wors description of pixel dungeon (or one of its derivates since its open source engine) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon

Definitely not a puzzle game but if you approach Pixel Dungeon ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon) with the right mindset, it has some of what you're looking for. Completing levels with one character unlocks other characters and provides specialization opportunities in future playthroughs. Badges function as puzzles. Time commitment is light but the game is deep enough to be interesting nearly any time. It's turn-based so you can pick it up, put it down, or look away at any time consequence free.

It's my go-to game when I'm looking for something more engaging than Candy Crush.

Along the same lines, Rymdkapsel ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grapefrukt.games.rymdkapsel1) is a casual meditative strategy game that scratches the same sort of itch. Like Pixel Dungeon there's no between game progression but it still fills that "not much time but bored to death of match three games" hole.
Yes, this is a tabletop rpg group, but to answer your question try Pixel Dungeon by watabou the creator of many wonderful online map generators like One Page Dungeon Generator and Medieval Fantasy City Generator
On what platform? It's free on Android, and you can donate if you feel like it. Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.watabou.pixeldungeon&hl=en
OP consider adding Pixel Dungeon to future lists.
Pixel Dungeon And or its variants Shattered Pixel Dungeon and Sprouted Pixel Dungeon are pretty good. Personally Sprouted is my favorite but many people like Shattered. They're Rogue likes that while you could last for awhile which I guarantee won't at first you can easily play in short bursts. There's also Hoplite which is also great for a quick play and it's very similar game Lamp & Vamp. Then there's Triple Town, Infinity Loop, Altos Adventure , Quadropus Rampage, Downwell, Ridiculous Fishing, 100000000 and it's sequel You Must Build A Boat
Maybe it's Pixel Dungeon, but you don't evolve your character, they're just other classes..
i don't even remember this one. lol but shit. now i gotta hear it back so as to observe my own evolution :)
hey, feel free to message me every time you upload a track, as i miss your uploads frequently, mostly due to self-centeredness/lack of focus/etc but I always never regret hitting your play button (if you know what i mean..lolol) yeah, but you are always so thorough and make up for the paranoia in my head insisting that my track is garbage to anyone but my own delusional self. i mean, i try so hard to take myself out of my person, but i just simply can't. i know exactly what every subtle line i deliver means, and i know all the other bits that i manage to roll out with that unless you happen to have all my exact interests, are gonna be hit and miss with most folks. like, it seems way more common now that the internet has made everyone normal, but it was always weird being a freestyling, heavy drug using, navy veteran introvert nerd who was only nerdy for very specific segments of nerdery. As if everyone who likes video games MUST like comic books and game of thrones and dungeons and dragons (which i actually always wanted to play but had never met anybody irl who played. most of my life i didn't even understand that it wasn't a typical board game with a board and such. as my closest experiences were d&d video games and board games like hero quest. and even hero quest i had to force my sister to play with me)(sidenote: that was the time when I asked my 10ish year old sister if she wanted to be the living or the undead, and she said, Shut Up. as she had never heard the word undead and thought i was fucking with her. lolol which in all fairness i was a monster child. i terrorized my sisters. ball sweat on the pillow, that was always a argument winner hahaha)
also i'm a fan of being myself at any cost, and while many people would allow this desire for individuality to oversway them into being a hipster, or a goth, or a non-conformist of some variety, i am also a mega-genius and a master of human behavior and foresaw this obstacle miles away. i go for ignoring all inputs from the outside until i'm sure of my self, at which point (speaking literally this would've been about 14-15 years old when i went from timid quiet observer virgin to now i'm sure of who i am and i'm gonna suddenly flip into pussy-wranglin' cocky as fuck, always right, even when i'm wrong, i do what i want something something. i forget how i started that sentence but i know i got my point in there. (lol like sex hahah) but yeah) i did, however, lack the sense of future self and have lived my whole life a day at a time, which i regret quite a whole shit bit lot at this point, now that I AM my future self, and i've squandered muliple journeys to success, self-reliance and happiness. Dropped out of school...got out of the navy at 6 years instead of hanging out another 14 for a lifelong pay check, quit my job at Samsung Austin Semiconductor which paid about 65,000 to start (and in Austin TX life was cheap as fuck. me and my ex had the nicest 2 bedroom apt i'd ever lived in for about 850 a month. we didn't even have furniture because we were spending 100 a day on the letter H...lol)
anyway... wowzers. maybe i'm high, or maybe, just maybe...i'm high. lol
I'm higher than hello. <=a simple and clever play on words i have yet to utilize on a track. (oh, i did say, "i'm high like shaking a hand" once. i loved that line lol)
anywho. I just discovered Terraria, and so it currently owns my soul. gotta get back to hunting for Tungsten Ore so I can make a full set of Tungsten Armor in order to get that sweet, sweet full set bonus defense.
It has everything that was missing from minecraft, which i couldn't really get into as an adult. too much like just drawing a picture or creating something from nothing, except that something has to be a visual display of blocks. I'd rather make music.
But terraria, has a full suite of RPG mechanics + randomization top to bottom so I can't accidently understand the game's algorithms inside and out before I have a chance to get into it. Which is the case with most games I play (outside of roguelikes and roguelites. which for the uninitiated, are a esoteric genre of video games stemming from the early 80's game "Rogue"... hence "roguelike". basically, every game is randomly generated in nearly every aspect, such as world map layout, what equipment you find, what enemies you fight, almost everything outside of the gameplay mechanics. which is where roguelikes shine brighter than a Gamma Ray Burst at arms length (and terraria being a roguelite, falls in line as well) as that is typically where about 99% of all game development fall at. Most traditional roguelikes don't have graphics at all, instead of settling for the "book was better than the movie" concept, in which your imagination gets full reign vs having the graphics drawn for you eliminating the need for your imagination to get involved much at all. Angband is the only game ever made that I have not found the ability to bore of. I've tried by playing the shit out of it, since the mid 90s, and I still play it at least a few times a year. It takes some effort to match the absurd learning curve, as roguelikes, (i failed to mention) are also infamously, torturously difficult. I've never beat Angband without cheating. Not in what must be like 20 fuckin years of the almost identical game, throwing the same tricks at me, and I can't beat it without save scumming. Oh yeah, another vital aspect of roguelikes is the permadeath. it seems too harsh for casuals, but once you understand the point, it's beautiful. It forces you to feel every mistake, and think hard about every button press. Because after getting 3/4s of the way through the game for the first time, only to be killed by a silly mistake made in haste, is gonna make you angry. and you actually end up caring about your choices and your character in general. I mean, who gives a fuck about dying when you just saved, amirite? 10 hours of careful gameplay being murdered before your eyes is a real twist in the senses. But it makes every little victory, so, so much more glorious.)
For a good introductory roguelike for either PC or Android, try Pixel Dungeon. It even has graphics! Another great common trait for your typical roguelike is that they are so unmarketable to the general public that they are almost always a labour of love, by people who want to make a game that they themselves can enjoy, or often a community of people, and this in turn means that these Champions of Gameplay are more often than not, free. But if you find one you love, it is always nice to tip the developers.
Tales of Maj'Eyal is another fan favorite that is more beginner friendly. Well, the game mechanics are quite deep and complicated, but compared to Angband or NetHack, Tome4 is a cake walk to get acquainted with. Another tip: don't play NetHack. It's too trial and errorry, imo. It likes to kill you for reasons that you could never see coming unless you've played it for years on years on years. Not worth it, at least I don't think so. Many people love the turds out of it. But I don't like the counterintuitiveness of it. All roguelikes require trial and error, but the good ones require you to adjust your combat strategies and turn-by-turn tactics, not force you to keep a mental list of what perfectly innocent looking foods may kill you without warning, or what every different statue requires you to do to manipulate it favorably. (honestly, i haven't even tried playing it in over a decade, so the specific shit stains may not match exactly, but those are the type of silliness you have to be watching for. I prefer intuitive concepts, such as, Oh! Turns out the Smeagol (the game is heavily JRR Tolkein influenced) steals your gold and teleports away! I guess I better avoid letting him near me instead shooting his face off with arrows or fireballs or whatever.) But that is something that falls into the order of idealistic lessons, in my mind/way of thinking. I don't like having to learn what every made up word means so that i can eventually know if i'm about to set off a trap or not.
anyway...........the world would be a better place if everyone took the time to read and understand me and my thoughts. my thoughts are better than most people's thoughts, and yes, I realize the arrogance that must seem to be erupting from my perceived egomania, aka my very own Mt. Narcissism, but I don't follow any sort of route of self servitude. I am just smart enough to know that I'm smart. To put it mildly. And I like to help and teach people, so I share my smart thoughts/unusual pov/abstract way of thinking with anybody who cares to hear me. And that leads to me seeming like a douche to folks who are insecure with there own mental faculties, so I in turn have become insecure, only insofar as I want peeps to hear and understand my words, not immediately shut me out because to the untrained ear I sound like every other prick who wants to feel superior. I reaize I sound as such, to most folks, which makes my brain discharges counter productive to that feeling of superiority. I know this. I realize this. I'm aware of this. I just pointed this out. Therefore, why would an arrogant fuck go out of his way to look like an asshole? If I did want to seem superior, I sure wouldn't ramble about things that most people don't care about. I would be a fuckin genius with my sociopathic ways. I'd say all the right things to make all the people like me. Because I could do that, if I wanted. But I couldn't live with myself. Being REAL is my modus operandi, and that will never change.
tldr thanks for hearing me spit yo :)
Only Pixel Dungeon. Nothing else is worth the time on stupidphones.
The original Pixel Dungeon
Here we go then ;)
I definitely have to recommend Pixel Dungeon. Its a permadeath roguelite. Each level is different, theres a tonne of skill involved, and the download is small. There are mods on the play store that change gameplay, if you somehow get bored of the original.
Sword and Glory is an excellent 2d swordfighting game. Again, its permadeath.
Does not Commute is a tricky and engaging driving game with extremely innovative mechanics.
Stunt Car Racing is the best real time multiplayer game i've played on android. Its about completing objectives in your stunt car before the other players.
Anything by Butterscotch shenanigans. They are great indie devs that make amazing humourous games.
Rivals at War: Firefight is a TPS/CCG where you collect cards that represent soldiers, kit them out with abilities, then fight alongside them in a King of the Hill type gamemode. It is very good.
Hoplite is honestly one of the best games on android. It is kind of a cross between Chess and a Roguelike, but that barely sums it up. Its very tricky, but you always feel like your deaths are caused by your mistakes.
Pixel dungeon has quite similar gameplay
Two Words: Pixel Dungeon
It's free on Android and can be played with one hand.

Just another vote for Pixel Dungeon. Always installed on my phone for when i'm out and about.
Here's some of my must-have games:

That's the one I played long ago. Buying things got me stuff in game, I remember because I spent $30 or $40 on it. Now, it might have been called donations, but when donations get you stuff...
For me it's been Pixel Dungeon for almost 2 years.

Just in case anyone hasn't heard about it, Pixel Dungeon is 100% free and it's awesome. There's also a very popular mod of it, and a subreddit to match (/r/pixeldungeon).
edit: I guess relevant and helpful comments are frowned upon in this subreddit. I'll keep that in mind.
