Tough situation, and I feel for ya. I think it's also part of being a grown-up. I don't know how old you are, but once people establish lives with certain sets of friends and activities, not to mention jobs and kids and homeownership stuff, there's less time for the effort it takes to cultivate new friendships.
u/ShittyShittyNameName mentioned meetup.com, and it was a great place for me to meet people when I needed to. A lot of the interactions were more superficial, but through those, I met people I felt closer to and eventually developed friendships with.
Volunteering is another good way to meet people, especially if you're into doing a river cleanup or pouring beer for Downtown After 5 or something. Again, the initial interaction is a little superficial, but with some time it might become something deeper.
Maybe you've tried all these things, I dunno. Hang in there.
Textured ceiling removal is overhead work with elevated risk of exposure due to the nature of the work and the friability of the texture. Removal would usually be done with controls like a PAPR (powered air purifying respirator), negative air machine, material saturation procedures and a three stage decontamination facility. Total removal is not a safe DIY.
Buncombe County does not have homeowner friendly asbestos removal regulations though a homeowner is entitled to remove their own asbestos in the USA. In fact, compared to other states there is very little information for homeowners wishing to do their own removal. It seems like they guide any visitor to a process that requires an abatement contractor.
https://www.buncombecounty.org/governing/depts/wncair/regulations/asbestos.aspx
Even on the NC gov website, there is limited information and while I did not dig, even finding a list of landfills that accept asbestos in the state could not readily be found.
What I would advise you to consider is boarding over the existing texture with a new drywall layer. There will be a small amount of disturbance but much less than tearing it all down. Ceiling texture scraping is tedious work and full drywall or other removal that the texture is on requires many controls to safely do the work.
If you only have repairs or electrical work and just want to cut holes, this can also be achieved with a lower risk profile and with abatement techniques like a glove bag or mini containment while disturbing the material then encapsulation before removing the bag/containment and of course allowing your selected encapsulant to dry, locking down any asbestos debris/fibres.
If you are interested in learning more about asbestos please read my ebook it's free for Amazon Kindle Unlimited members or a low cost educational guide for non-members.

You can use The Asheville App to report potholes or other road issues, such as missing street signs. They have been very responsive in my experience, and will even message you back with updates. As they say on the app, "if you don't report it, we may not know about it."

(Sorry, don't have the iTunes link).
Asheville itself is in more of a valley, so getting to higher elevations usually requires a vehicle. One thought, if time and proximity are issues, is to take an Uber to the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge (it's less than 6 miles). That will give you an identifiable place to be picked up later as well, plus the Center has some nice small exhibits of folk art (old and modern). But the Mountains to Sea trail goes right through there, and the hike to Haw Creek Overlook should be pretty manageable. You won't feel remote and it hugs the parkway in places, but it's close to town and ground transportation should be pretty easy from where you are staying.

There really isn't thing we can tell you that the weather sites don't already say other than "it's a spring storm", you don't need to worry about tornadoes, and if you stay inside your Faraday cage you won't have to worry about lightning.
Thank you so much for taking care of this one in need. You can put up some signs in the area if you feel up to it, letting any possible owner know the animal is at the shelter. Otherwise, maybe putting up a post on Nextdoor.com in yours and the surrounding neighborhoods may help too. Either way, this little guy will get all the help he needs to get better. I'm sure he'll be available for foster in a bit, if you guys are interested in that. PM me if you want details. (I'm a foster and volunteer at AHS.)

I try to defend the City , but feels like a pretty damning level of incompetence on the City's part.
Also, check out the city's page for boil water advisories: https://zapier.com/engine/rss/2261627/AVL-Water-Boil-Advisories
One of the best mattresses I have ever slept on. A fraction of the price of other memory foam mattresses. Comes to your doorstep in a box.
I live next to and go to the Moth all the time. You can park in the church lot next to the Moth or in the bank lot at night with no problem. Also, like all of West Asheville, on street parking is 100% legit unless marked otherwise.
For a cheap stay check out Bon Paul's like others have suggested or this Airbnb that is very close and fine with people going to shows https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/7895827?s=4UROxoog&sug=50
there's lots of trails in Pisgah National Forest that are pretty cool and not super known
for example, heartbreak ridge. you can access it in montreat, or on graphite road down the mountain (closer to old fort)
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/north-carolina/heartbreak-ridge-trail
or snooks nose: https://www.hikingproject.com/trail/7029509/snooks-nose-trail
Sorry...
For ur next build.... Unsure if worth it but it would be stealthy sound wise
A buddy of mine out in Leicester was having an issue with birds, so he taped up a picture of a hawk to keep them away. He swore it worked, and I was skeptical, but a quick search seems to support the idea.
is this a reference to the perils of mountain biking in the fall due to leaf cover/rock hiding?
there is a heartbreak trail down sorta inbetween old fort and montreat

I've found the Khan Academy stuff to be really useful. I also have a college Algebra (also covers a bit of pre calc) textbook you could use, but it's the driest thing you'll ever read.
downtown, to the right of the fire station is an alley. walk through the alley and you'll find it.
edit: I'm proud of my 3 upvotes for this. I did it! ;]
Ian Moore is a great musician and showman. Over the years, I've talked to him numerous times and he has always been a pleasure to converse with.
He's probably my favorite that I can remember by name, but there have been so many, it's hard to remember them all.
If you haven't already, post to WAX and your local Nextdoor.com, plus tell the Buncombe County Animal Shelter she's lost. She looks like part hound, so maybe, she ran off after a critter? Can she put out Penny's bed and/or other things that smell like "home"? (I don't have any idea if that works for dogs, but it can work for cats, so everything is worth trying.)
The Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center opens for the season on Saturday April 8 at 10 am featuring an exhibition on the life and work of Rafael Guastavino (Basillica of St. Lawrence). https://tinyurl.com/guastavino
And on Sunday April 9, at 7 pm, the SVM is partnering with the White Horse Black Mountain to host a screening of the film "Upwardly Mobile" which seeks to answer the question, "What does it mean to be young, black and male in America and in Asheville?" https://tinyurl.com/upmobilesvm
Good question — I don't necessarily know, either (hence a follow-up story down the road).
Effectively, it's a partial dam, with a lot of concrete and adjustable gates going all the way across the river (see Page 40 of the plan ). It might not be a problem at all — I'm just surprised that there are so few questions from folks who appreciate the river in a natural state.
>I'm not sure which trailhead you're thinking of.
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/north-carolina/mount-mitchell-trail
I was up there a week ago. Went in Big East Fork, up Old Butt and camped at Deep Gap the first night. The camp sights closer to Stairs Mountain are nicer but have no water. The Deep Gap water source is only a trickle a few hundred yards down towards the Boy Scout Camp. Weather conditions have gotten colder since then, but there were only a few points with frozen pools on the trail when I went. Those are dangerous and I recommend hiking poles. You might see more ice on trees... I really recommend Outdooractive. https://www.outdooractive.com/mobile/en/. You can create your own tours and plan routes with drag and drop and it actually recognizes the trails. The GPS functions in airplane mode so you can see exactly where you are, how far you've gone and how much elevation change there is on your route.
(Shameless plug) Make sure to come out to the Fanaticon Pre-Party event! We'll have drinks, costume contests, and regional DJ's spinning comic/geek themed electronica, including myself. :) Come say hi!
(Yes, I will also be at Fanaticon. I'm really looking forward to it.)
Sylva or wolf laurel (doubtful) if I had my druthers. Burnsville near Celo is pretty decent. Otherwise the wooded areas of Cali or try to find a space in Montana or Colorado.
My degree travels. I would consider overseas. I have not thought of specifics, I just know it would be good to be out of the states moving into the future.
I've got the amazon basics 50 mile range antenna. It took some positioning to find the best window to hang it in, but I get NBC, ABC, Fox, CBS, PBS, and all their associated channels.
Wouldn't hurt to check antennaweb.org to find out the best place for your house.
I bought myself an Amazon Echo Dot the other day and am really enjoying it. Fun cheap ($50) little gadget.

EDIT: Also, if he likes socks then I definitely have to plug darn tough socks. Lifetime warranty (for reals) and one of the best sock I've ever own. A bit pricey though ($20ish per pair) but very much worth it.
I'm not normally on Haywood Rd, but when I am Fi usually can't find signal.
Everywhere else is fine. The addition of US Cellular really did help. I've had Fi since it came out and US Cellular really fills in a good amount of gaps. Coverage isn't near Verizon's out in the hollers, but also not as congested as Verizon sometimes gets around here.
If you have WiFi in the majority of places you are, it will prefer/use that.
Get the Signal Info app, or any similar ones geared towards Fi subscribers and you can get a widget that will show which network you're currently on. The app also allows you to paste codes into the phone dialer to "repair" or choose a specific carrier if Fi is being stubborn and putting you on a crap Sprint cell instead of a decent Tmo cell. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mbmc.fiinfo
Overall, for MVNO, I like it, but you need a compatible device to get the most out of it, which is a barrier for lots of people.
> The other just doesn't care. Parties outside at 3am, parking in my driveway, etc. I had 2 people towed within the past 2 weeks for parking in my driveway - "we didn't want to park on the street".
Report them. I don't know if they'll do anything about it or not, but I doubt they want to be represented by someone that is allowing that kind of behavior, especially in a place they are trying to "win over" residents. My experience as a guest has been that they are responsive to complaints.
https://www.airbnb.com/neighbors
Might ask guests next time who they booked through, it could be vrbo too. Might also get the other neighbors to report them, also.
A friend of mine had all of his slashed on Hill St. Asheville is getting a little bit rougher by the day folks. Be careful out there. Also, I live on the Westside, where similar things have been going on. WOuld anybody else like to join this with me? Warning: it's a facebook link.

This is my neck of the woods... light traffic, steady uphill and killer downhill!
Most of the activities are for older kids, but the Macaroni Kid Asheville newsletter lists weekly kid events. I quit Facebook many moons ago, but the Asheville Mamas FB page was always very active; try there for baby activity suggestions. Meetup.com also has some options available iirc.

Edit: As previously mentioned by others, Buncombe County libraries and Play & Learn were lifesavers when my kids were that age.

If you are on an android phone you can install an app called "Google Opinion Rewards" which gives you occasional 2 question surveys mostly reviewing places you have visited recently. each survey gives you between .11 cents and 1.00 and what you earn is only redeemable in google play credits. Moral of the story, there is normally enough money in your google play account to pay for those pesky paid apps and upgrades.
Sorry, I haven't heard of an app for iphone.
I've been using Project Fi for about 1.5 yrs now (on Pixel XL)... still very happy with it. I haven't had any problems around Asheville or traveling. A couple people already mentioned FiSwitch (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cheekydevs.fiswitch&hl=en_US) - I would recommend it, has been invaluable.
Ray's Weather is great and there are phone apps for it. Here's Android's: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.raysweather.mobile and here's Apple's https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/raysweather.com-app/id904822956?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4
It is the older (2019) version of this dashcam. I am mostly happy with it, and I have 3 of them in different vehicles. They all have a problem with the internal clocks running fast and needing to be manually adjusted every so often.
From the Celo list today:

I have many fresh deer skins all obtained using the fisting method to ensure little to no knife marks. I have way more than I can use myself and will have more coming in the next few weeks. Making buckskin and leather are great winter projects! Get some skins before deer season is over! $5 each, buy one get one free. I have about 30 available.
You could try a wild animal trap for about $20 to $40 bucks on Amazon (and that's for a new one - find one to borrow if you can). The trick is to set it up in a place where it doesn't just attract and trap critters other than the ones you want to catch. Then release them in a more remote area and seal up the entrance. Over the years, I have done this with racoons, possum, and a pesky feral cat (although the cat went to the humane society). https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BQQMJQ?th=1
I have it listed at $250 at this point. Here is the link on the pictures from facebook.

If you are unable to see it, perhaps you could give me an email address and I can send the ad and pictures. A really nice heirloom st. thanks.
Kinda the wrong time of year for this, but I used to take my heeler swimming when he was young and crazy. It seemed to burn more energy than just running did, and he had an absolute blast every time that we went. He also loved spending hours "herding" the Irish Wolfhound that was always at our local dog park (I realize that your boy is a rescue, as well, and may not fare well in that environment).
Another suggestion would be to check out meetup.com; there are a ton of local hiking groups that you could join, and most would be fine with you bringing your pup. That way, you'd be able to check out new trails with a group of people versus hiking alone.
I've never used it, but you can try a website like meetup.com to find a group with similar interests/hobbies. You into any sports/outdoor activities (like hiking) or motorcycles or video games or anything? Asking so I can (hopefully) refer you to a group.
One of my favorite rides - sorry I don't have more rd #s, going from memory here- is to head out toward Max Patch out Leicester HWY and into Spring Creek when you can take a left on a paved road. I think its the only one that comes in at a 90 degree. There is a boxy blue 2 story bldg on the right. It will turn to dirt and lead up to the FS road Max Patch is on. Turn right when it ends. You can follow that road past Max Patch and out into Del Rio, then back to Hot Springs and follow the river home, OR Turn left at Harmon Den, ride down under I-40, across the Pigeon and up toward Mt Sterling, Cataloochee. Get a Gazateer and map it!
AllTrails is a pretty fantastic resource for finding trails.
You can perform a search that dictates overall difficulty, length and elevation.
If you wanted a list of all 5 mile long trails with 1k in elevation gain it will vomit a list out for you :D
Visiting the 1st week of November. Was curious if anyone had used the Alltrails app to hike the Shinning Rock loop? Specifically this one:
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/north-carolina/shining-creek-old-butt-knob-loop-trail
I know it's not a blazed trail and some of the junctions can be tricky from what I've read, so just wondering if anyone has use Alltrails as an effective way to navigate it.
Thanks!
You want hard and rewarding? Short off Mountain at Linville gorge. Thank me later

Don't go if it's foggy or very low cloud cover though.
For real though, Weather Underground is the only place I can find calling for 10+ inches while everyone else is talking it down. Winter is coming.
Just saw a post on the, "You know you grew up in Asheville..." Facebook page, which referred to a 2008 Asheville cookbook featuring recipes from local restaurants of the time. Interesting to see how many are gone, but I recall most of them, including: Mack Kells, Vincenzo’s, Spirits on the River, The Grovewood Cafe, Bistro 1896, Amici Trattoria, etc.
The title is, "Chef's Table: Mountain Flavors from Asheville's Most Celebrated Chefs," and although probably long out of print, there are some used or new copies to be had through Amazon if anyone is interested, for as low as $5 to $10. Thought I might pick one up.
Did you know the CIA provided kill lists of leftists to a right-wing military junta in 1965 Indonesia, resulting in a million dead Indonesians? Did you know that was only the start of a worldwide mass-murder program orchestrated by our government, which also helped disappear and kill hundreds of thousands of communists even throughout allied European countries?

Check the blurbs if you think it’s just some wacky conspiracy shit. Fans include Noam Chomsky, a former NYT bureau chief, a former attorney general of the US, Gore Vidal, Oliver Stone. I sure didn’t learn this stuff in history class!
My tally is eight nests this year. Eight! So far already this year.
In the past I've burned, drowned, and even shopvac'ed them. This year I've got a new weapon in the arsenal, and it has been fantastic.
Permethrin dust. Shit's fantastic.
Since MOGE Tee closed downtown, I just got to YZ Asian Market on Leicester and get a 12-pack of DeDe Milk Tea packets for $5 and a package of uncooked black sugar tapioca pearls for $3, which is enough for all 12. But it can take a long time to cook the pearls, and then chill them, so they also have pouches of precooked pearls that are probably $5 for 2 servings.
This one. So far, the battery life is insane with lithium batteries. I'm at 2+ months and counting.

All I know is:
But I DO defer to you, because you've lived there for 6 years. I usually only go up there a few times a year. Also, we may be at a misunderstanding because you might be specifically referring to the downtown of Burnsville, while I'm talking about the general population of people around Burnsville.
I would just avoid being too far into the styx. Don't know where you're moving from, but I talked to a Black girl who was from a bigger city in NC and her mom up and moved her into Celo (east of Burnsville) for high school, and it was a really bad decision in her opinion, because she felt completely isolated and tokenized. So yeah, basically anything in Madison County, Yancey County, Haywood County, even the North side of Buncombe, are going to be like extremely, (like 95% +) white. There are pockets that are getting more diverse, like Mars Hill, or Marshall, but on the whole, it's going to be relevant. But again, that doesn't mean that everyone is of a certain mindset. I actually think the girl I talked to was placing a lot of her frustrations with her mom moving her out of her built friendgroups and blaming it on a race-relations issue, but at the same time, there is definitely a certain way to 'act' (read: country livin') if you're going to be that far out.
There's also a lot of
My theory is that there really isn't that much racism in WNC these days, as much as xenophobia, which can be helped by chatting with neighbors. But trust takes a long time to earn for anyone in a holler.
My best bets would be: Black Mountain, Mars Hill, or Brevard; in that order. Also Fairview, Edneyville, or Mills River.

New~ish to the area myself, but I've been loitering and have found some (not hidden) gems.
Medina's Bistro across from CR Park entrance is great for breakfast & lunch, never had the dinner but the ever-changing dinner menu sounds delish.
You have Rumbling Bald park for a short 1.5 mile hike, good grade up & down. Short, but you can scramble & cling to many nice boulders, or watch folks bouldering/climbing.

Happy belated birthday!
Also, thanks for the recommendation, looks a lot like the top of Little Bearwallow Mountain (AllTrails)

Brevard super nice and not as much elevation gain. Start at Oscar Blues and do any of the “Fletcher Flyer” routes. Link below to 30 mile route. Google Fletcher Flyer for other routes in same area
I do this 3x a week. I wouldn't do the middle spur or going under 40; just keep going through veteran's park then take a right at blur ridge road. Very scenic route. Minimal cars most of the route.

May I suggest that next time you try a float down the French Broad? You can put in at Carrier Park and end up at the Bywater. Lots closer than the Green.
And there's plenty of us Ents that float the French Broad as well ; )
yeah sorry, our website is coming up soon. The two best resources I can offer you right now are Facebook and Patreon.
I recently moved from E AVL to Fletcher it every quote was higher than the last! I ended up going to Nextdoor.com in my area and asked if anyone wanted to make $100 for one day's work moving and I had a TON of replies. Your situation is a little different because the drive is further but it may be worth a try - you could rent a Uhaul and find two guys that would help - I figured Nextdoor would be WAAY safer because people use their full names, have a post history, photos, etc., Good luck! It's crazy expensive.
I don’t know if you’re on Nextdoor or not (I wouldn’t blame you if you aren’t) but there’s an older thread about this there: https://nextdoor.com/post/158606049?init_source=copy_link_share
Looks like the latest comment references something happening with the hospital and traffic control.
Check out this apartment finder app that is available on google play. The app is very easy to navigate and it's a very helpful tool in finding a place to live.
You might be thinking of Sandy, 2012, when it snowed a little on the 29th and 30th of October. It was mostly over by the 31st, although the higher mountains still had snow.
The 2014 snow was just a regular 'ol low pressure system.
too late. kansas city got it. i mean, it's not too late to continue fighting the 'anti-fiber' bill but we didn't get google fiber as soon as we'd like.
If you add outline.com/
to the URL for Citizen Times articles you can bypass all the ads and various junk. For example:
If you make less than $31k you can get free federal and NC filing with TurboTax. If your return is straight-froward, TurboTax is darn easy and fast to use.
If your taxes aren't simple or you want to interact with someone in person, I used AVL Tax Pros this year (my first time not doing it myself) and they were super nice and knowledgeable and fast. I was satisfied.
You ought to be able to get some quality time on the Blue Ridge Parkway then. Cars are pretty well behaved on it, mostly.
I think the descents are scary, but I'm the nervous type and not a confident bike handler on descents.
If you want to stuff your face with elevation change you might try something based on the Town Mountain / Elk mountain loop http://www.mapmyride.com/us/asheville-nc/town-mountain-elk-mountain-loop-route-213777457
Riverside drive is a lot of flat riding (by asheville standards) if you want to mix in some flat.
I'd try to stay off Tunnel Road in E. Asheville, which is pretty bike unfriendly due to traffic.
Coffee Pot Mtn Loop I did this last week and really enjoyed the scenery. I think this is similar or exactly to what avl_sup mentioned.
There's also Johns Hopkins' COVID-19 map (highly-respected research university and hospital), and somehow the Asheville Citizen-Times also has a pretty good COVID-19 map using data from authoritative sources.
The one above allows you to select the state as well as the source article and city/county where the person was infected.
Here's some more trackers: - (World Map)
If I'm not mistaken, it's right here.
If you haven't, please check with the Buncombe County Animal Shelter to see if anyone has turned him in as a stray. And also post to your local Nextdoor.com because that has been helpful for a lot of lost pets.
I saw one at Barnes and Noble called Pok Pok that looked amazingly detailed.

This is the dashcam I use:

And I only edited the video to make it seem like it is automatically switching, it actually records the front and back cameras simultaneously but on separate files
"Met Her on the Mountain: The Murder of Nancy Morgan," by Mark Pinsky
I have only read one such book involving a case in this area, so I guess that makes it a "favorite" by default. The story is about a young woman who was assigned to the Marshall area to work as a VISTA volunteer (the old LBJ/Great Society program which was to be the domestic equivalent of the Peace Corps). She was raped and murdered in 1970 while serving there, and the case remains unsolved.
The story itself I found fascinating; the book taken as a whole was OK. Still recommend it though, if only for some of the insights into the long time mountain residents of Madison County and the Marshall area, including some of their cultural and political machinations, and the occasional glimpses it provides into how Asheville was (is?) viewed by some of the folks living further out.
It looks like it fell out of print, but is to be republished next year. But used copies are available for cheap, and a local source or the library probably has it as well.

Edit: Have not read it yet, but this was just published -- "Murder at Asheville's Battery Park Hotel: The Search for Helen Clevenger's Killer."
