I made this by first scraping the first 10000 user ids of the forum (and their friends list) and using these unique user names downloaded their display image thumbnails using python scripts that I hacked together. I then used <strong>AndreaMosaic</strong> to create the mosaic and made sure each user was used once for the final photo.
In total I downloaded 41k unique thumbnails and could potential download hundreds and thousands more for a bigger Photomosaic.
I have included <strong>a list of users - file</strong> for this mosaic so you are able to search for your own name and find your own photo using the pixel coordinates given.
If you have and photo recommendations for a future RT Community Photomosaic please message me here and I'll whip one up.
He (the original author) used AndreaMosaic
{Kimetsu no yaiba}

Sadly you cant resolve all 10,000,000 of her. It has 10k tiles, each tile is made of a smaller mosaic with 10k tiles as well. if anyone wants make your own waifu mosaic heres the program

This will compile a set of images to match another image in a large mosaic.
Now the only task is the arduous one of downloading the thumbnails.
(Note that if everyone who upvoted this comment's parent comment took part in the task it's time taken would be significantly reduced.)
AndreaMosaic. The interface is sort of old and funky, but it's got plenty of parameters to mess around with, and it does a great job once you've got the hang of it.
Edit: And I just used good ol' Photoshop to edit all the little images before feeding them to AndreaMosaic.
For anyone interested in making one of these then you can use this neat free program AndreaMosaic from here
http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/
I have used it to make a few cool pictures for around my house
I used AndreaMosaic.
And the images are preselected. As well as making the mosaics, AndreaMosaic can extract frames from videos, so I took 5,000 from Super Mario 64 and Yoshi's Island, and 7,500 from Banjo-Kazooie (roughly one every 1.2 seconds), and used the 17,500 frames to make the mosaics.
Disclaimer: I didn't create the image, I just thought it would be funny to send it to space. It's from an older PCMR post and the original author is /u/Qaest. The best version of the photo I could find has 53 MB and can be downloaded here. The program he used was AndreaMosaic.
Photoshop has no tool for creating photomosaics, but there is software out there that does it.
Last time someone asked these two were linked:
http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/
http://www.mazaika.com/
(Have a look, I have not tested them).
Thanks! I tried out a free program called AndreaMosaic
I noticed that the subreddit only keeps up to 1000 posts so I wanted to save some of the images before they fell off the edge of the internet
Thanks
I googled free mosaic pc and looked at a few but ended up settling on this 1 It didn't put water marks or other stuff like another trial I tried and seemed pretty easy to use . Messed around with settings a bit until I ended up with what you see posted .
Hey, I made one of these last week. I used Photo Grabber to download tagged photos from Facebook, and Andrea Mosaic to put the mosaic together. Yours looks nice :)
Yes, you are right, that linked algo is just a cheating way of solving that problem. I suddenly didn't find a better one, I just remembered that such a tool exists. Now I found a better one called AndreaMosaic which is free for personal usage for a limited picture size.

What you want is a mosiac creator - google for "open source mosaic software". This was one of the results: http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/
See other responses about issues you may have with memory, in addition, you may have to try various programs - not all of them may work with such a large image selection.
There is software that will allow you to download from a list - again google is your friend. This seems to do the job (not free); https://pictureripper.com/
If your progamming inclined, have a look at https://openseadragon.github.io/examples/creating-zooming-images/ - this is a little more manual. PM me if you need help with this one.
I used "AndreaMosaic" to make this. There are quite a lot of similar programs. There's even a way to do it with Photoshop, but that way takes quite a lot of work.
Additional software that I use and recommend is Andrea Mosaic. It's free for personal use as long as you keep the resulting file under 210Mb.
There are download builds for Mac, PC, Linux...
Details in this image lead me to believe it was composed using AndreaMosaic before the creator cropped out the credit due to that software which they kindly ask be included in the images people produce with their free software.
Yay! We did it reddit. Thanks for the support.
I figure I should explain how this came about, seeing as there have been several people wondering. First, to clarify, I did indeed use a tool to generate this image, called AndreaMosaic. It's free to use for personal use, and although it hasn't seen updates in a while it still works great. What actually took quite a bit of effort was obtaining all the thumbnails. As there are over 4500 videos on the main CaptainSparklez youtube channel, I elected to automate the process to get them. I used the YouTube APIs to get the IDs of every video, then wrote a script to download the thumbnails for each (took me several hours to accomplish this). To get the best results, I chose an image with a lot of variety in terms of colours and contrast (hence the rainbow car image). After this it was a simple matter of giving the parent image to the program, giving it the folder of thumbnails, and let the magic happen. There are over 10,000 images in this mosaic, and if I had elected to try and only use one of every thumbnail, the quality would have been greatly reduced. If there is interest though, I can attempt to make this none the less.
Source of images was this great video of matt eating: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NpzIyLL-ZI
And the free Mosaic software: http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/ which allows you to add some photos and it takes care of laying it all out.
That's a GREAT idea! I love that it can be added to ad infinitum.
What do you think is the best way to put the cap on the wood with the glue gun? Little spacers of wood the depth of the cap?
A mosaic also sounds super cool. I made a mosaic poster a few years ago and used this program (http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/) to make it (fyi). Good luck with that!
It was made with a program, so I didn't work very long. And I let the program choose between 116 images. I think it's possible that it didn't use all of them though.
It is called a Phoographic Mosaic and there are a bunch of free programs out there such as AndreaMosaic.
You can even use Photoshop, here is a tutorial I quickly found
Ultimately google is your friend so hopefully you find what you are looking for. Personally I wouldn't shell out cash for this particular program as it can be done in an already powerful photoediting program such as Photoshop.
download AndreaMosaic - it's a program that creates a mosaic and you can input any images you want, and fine tune the settings. So easy to use and very userfriendly.
152 source videos taken 03/25/12 on my HTC Arrive. Images preprocessed by Windows Movie Maker then Blender Mosaic made by AndreaMosaic
Not really art but I had fun making it. I hope to make more soon, maybe Downtown and Hydepark.
I've made a few using freeware called Andrea Mosaic and have really liked the results. MIght give this one a try though as well - why not.
I recommend AndreaMosaic for the amount of options and that it can produce something like this (which I will print out at higher quality and frame sooner or later).
I'm a fan of the mosaic idea. If you're wanting to create an actual picture with the mosaic, check out AndreaMosaic. I plan on making a 3'x5' large mosaic to hang on the wall using a design I made with this program. I'm currently just biding my time and drinking beers with the color caps I need. :)
Here's one I did for my gf a few years ago. I used AndreaMosaic. I first heard about it on lifehacker or something. People at Kinkos were watching as it slowly slid out of the big ass printer. Some of them were reminding me that this will have me laid that night. Edit: Sorry for the bad image quality, I used my phone camera under terrible lighting conditions.
Give this a try: Andrea Mosaic. I've used it a bunch and love it! It does take some finagling to get it to work on your Mac (there are directions) and you have a lot of control over how your final image looks (tons of settings). The guy who wrote the program is really good about answering any questions you might have as well.
"The Cloud Is Just Someone Else's Computer" comme dirait l'autre :P
Non mais sérieusement, j'ai utilisé ce logiciel: http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/
Have you tried AndreaMosaic? I haven’t used it for years so I can’t vouch for the current iteration. It’s actually intended for photo mosaics but with some setting tweaks I think it will do what you’re wanting
I suggest you google " create a photo mosaic" to find a plethora of tutorials and software. Add "open source" to the search to find free ones such as http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/
I've made one of these before using this software and the time-consuming part is coming up with a collection of images to use as source material. If that work is already done, these can be made in a few minutes.
Andreamosaic? Im guessing.

Anyways, a fantastic idea for a gift is to create a family picture for your spouse using all those camera phone pics over the years and make a mosaic of that. Easy to do. Wife was super happy with the one I created for her.
I just found one called AndreaMosaic which seems to be free software that does that. Haven't tested it yet
I hope it works with massive amounts of images, because I have a lot to use
There's a piece of stand alone software that does this automatically if I understand you correctly.
http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/
I have used this a couple of times. Basically you import the background image then give it a set of images to use for the mosaic and it does the rest.
Made by /u/NiGGlDa0ne using this program:
http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/download/
Based off of a post on /r/DotA2 http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/28gf4t/to_the_guy_who_made_the_ability_icon_picture/ http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img829/4941/czm8.png
Andrea mosaic is software that will let you merge a set of images into a mosaic of a target image.
If you just want to make one long print with a ton of pictures side by side, your best bet would be to lay it out in photoshop or gimp, then hand the .tif of to a printer. Most places should be able to accommodate up to 50ft long. Although its really hard/expensive to frame super long prints.
I used a program to make it. I used cards from Ygo-Pro, give or take a few~ I just thought it looked kinda cool~ and someone is bound to get a kick out of it. You can get the program at: http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/
This all used up heaps of RAM while I did all this...
The end picture was 183 megapixels.
It took awhile/effort, but it gave me something to do. Glad you liked it. Think of it as a prize for you.
'
For the record, I did all this on a netbook as it's all I had available to me, so it took twice as long.
edit: this'll be my last cake day comment for a year... GOODNIGHT
Of course it's a mosiac maker*, that's why he has a copper coloured tooth. If it was done manually that wouldn't have happened.
Not sure it's changed the brightness levels though. Dark parts are night shots, and light parts are scenes with large amounts of light like outdoor scenes or up against well lit things pandorica alliance(whatever they were called), lens flares and titles.
Not gonna knock it though. If the dude is up for gathering a ton more screenshots for 9 n 10 that'd be grand.
*I use "Andrea Mosiac" if anyone is interested in their own. I'd be happy to hear of other suggestions
The final product was 20 x 30" on poster board as a proof-of-concept before stepping up to the much more expensive canvas print at 40 x 60".
The image size linked is reduced so as to not stress out imgur. The size I sent to Costco for printing was 14Mb. The final size I'm looking to have printed will be about about 200Mb. The software I used was Andrea Mosaic.
These are the better images of years and years of Dalmatian rescue. Lots of memories... The look on her face when she saw this was priceless!
