I had this and found a workaround to solve it. Download an app from the playstore called MultiPicture Live. It's a live wallpaper that just cycles through still wallpapers on a timer.
Set up a folder and put a single wallpaper that you want to use in it, then set this folder as the source. This will mean it won't cycle and will basically just act as a single wallpaper. This also has no negative affect on battery consumption, as far as I can tell.
The weird gradient over the status bar area should be gone as it doesn't display on live wallpapers.

There is a workaround to fix this. Download an app called MultiPicture Live Wallpaper. It's a live wallpaper app that cycles wallpapers at set time intervals. But if you have it link to a folder with a single wallpaper in then you fix the grey status bar issue as it doesn't happen on live wallpapers.
Like I said, it's a workaround not a fix, but it solves the problem until Samsung issues a proper fix.

I reccomend this app, Just make a folder of your favourite Babymetal pics (Preferably portrait), Use the folder as the source and tweak the settings to your liking. It won't appear as a app it will appear in Live Wallpapers when changing it :). This is what i have done and i get a new picture everytime i swipe, its great :)

I've never heard of it, but a quick 30 second look gave the answer.
Literally the first thing written on the app page is instructions on how to use it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture
You need to open the wallpaper picker then choose ""MultiPicture Live Wallpaper Setting"".
MultiPicture Live Wallpaper has been my top-choice for this for years. Just recently have I started to use a combination of Tasker + Muzei + Folder for Muzei because I like the blur effect, but I still use MPLW frequently because of how simple it is, and it also centers and crops images.
I love this app. I have used it since a switch from my palm smart phone to my first android droid incredible. . . It has been reliable on more than a few phones.
I highly recommend it.
There's a way round this. Use a live wallpaper app called Multipicture Live Wallpaper within which there is a setting to have a different wallpaper on your lock screen.
MultiPicture Live Wallpaper can do it but instead it's a unique wallpaper for each home screen.
This app may also work, I haven't tried it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ubeecube.slideshowwallpaper
been using this forever and it works great. You can pick the number of screens and have it change each wallpaper individually. You can even specify different folders for different screens. Very customizable.
I have a fix for this issue. It's more of a workaround but it does solve it.
I use a live wallpaper app called MultiPicture Live. It allows you to set a folder as a source and it then cycles wallpapers from that folder on a timer, or on double tap of the screen.
Just set MultiPicture Live as your wallpaper and the set up a folder as the source and put a single wallpaper in the folder that you wish to use.
For some reason this problem doesn't seem to persist with live wallpapers.
I can also confirm that I have noticed zero affect on battery life since doing this.

EDIT: I can also confirm this is nothing to do with the June update as I am still on the April security patch and have the problem.
I had this problem and found a workaround. Install an app called MultiPicture Live. It's a live wallpaper that uses a folder of your choice to cycle through wallpapers on a timer. Just set up a folder with a single image in it.
It does mean you have too mess around a bit when you want to change your wallpaper, but it works great for getting rid of that horrible gradient on AMOLED backgrounds.

This has been driving me crazy for a very long time. I think i first noticed it on my Note 4. And ever since, every phone i've owned had it. Payed less and less attention to it, though. Now I'm using a Galaxy S8+ and its becoming an annoyance again :(
I do know a sollution though, that has served me well in the past, though. Find a live-wallpaper with which you can set a static image (your wallpaper) and the issue should be gone. And you should have a solid black looking screen. This one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture&hl=nl works But is pretty old.
I really hope , either theres a simple solution, which i doubt. Or that Google finally gets wind of this and can and will solve / fix it very soon.
This has been posted about before with workarounds.
If you download this app for free from the playstore, set up a folder and put your wallpaper(s) in it, it will not show the grey bar/gradient.

Not sure if there is a way to change with a swipe, but I use a live wallpaper to change home and lock screen backgrounds. Just make a folder a put a selection of background images you want to use.

Omg ! Was about to post about this. I've been having / noticing this since my Note 4 , i think. I also think its an Android issue It's been driving me crazy ever since. Here's two links about the same issue https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/5nmuzg/pixel_launcher_with_black_wallpaper_grey_bar_at/ https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Galaxy-S-Phones/Grey-notification-bar-on-home-screen/td-p/97288 There's more to be found on it on the net though. The one only solution i know of is to use a live wallpaper like this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture&hl=nl and set just one static picture (simply the wallpaper you want) as the wall.
I use this live wallpaper: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture
I used to use this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture&hl=en
I was pretty content with this wallpaper I made till I saw your vid.
Then I made this opened version and used Multipicture to transition between open and closed
I think now I'll be using yours tho
I think you are thinking of this which i am still using.
It's old and I don't know if it still works, but I've used this in 2.3 times: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture
I don't know if Nova supports this by default, but I have used this app in the past and it worked well
Use Multipicture Live Wallpaper: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture it'll allow you to set different home and lock screen walls.
Yes to your edit. This app is pretty good in my experience.
