At first I thought it was from a 3rd party mod, but wow, this malware was spread from a Mojang domain.

Thank you /u/urielsalis
Mojang posted a article on there site.
It will be between
Switch Edition
Xbox One Edition
Windows 10 Edition
Pocket Edition
VR Editions
Mojangs site also says
> What’s more, any DLC you purchase will be accessible amongst the various devices at no extra charge. (For example: if you buy the Greek Mythology pack on Nintendo Switch, you’ll also own it on the mobile, Xbox One and Windows 10 Editions too - no extra charge).
That's cool.
Edit: it looks like PlayStation systems and the Wii U will not be getting crossplay unfortunately.
Edit 2: It also doesn't seem too have cross play with Java Edition.
The more I read about this, the more it seems this is just a vulnerability in PNG and it just so happens that Minecraft uses the PNG format for player skins. It could have been any other distribution method, including a website. Running MC is fine and won't get you infected...... unless you run a mod from a dubious source. That's the big security issue: only download mods from good sources!
(edit: even calling this a PNG vulnerability is stretching it, as it sounds like it's just inert code inserted into the file with no way of executing under normal circumstances; it just happens that AV flags this anyway)
(edit 2: since the above site isn't updating their article, here's a confirmation on what a lot of us were saying: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-java-edition-skins-issue-update)
> people will come in with a Raspberry Pi and say they want to play Minecraft on it
Ain't nothing wrong with a little PiCraft.
> "If it can run Minecraft, it can run Mass Effect!"
I- Is there even a Linux version of ME? Google tells me that there is... of sorts (WINE is not emulation, but it's not exactly like this version of ME was made with Linux in mind). That said, just because something runs on the 32-bit kernel, it's no guarantee that the ARM kernel will be so kind... As, it seems, someone has already found out.
Maybe, as OP's title suggests, it just needs more RAM... ^(and a complete kernel change.)
A lovely bit of classic r/Games rabble rousing. The marketplace, as they call it has been a part of the game since April. On sale there are packs of skins, texture packs, user created adventure maps and "mash-up packs", which tend to be a themed combination of the previous. It does use an obfuscated currency called Minecraft coins though.
Also added to the "bedrock" (ie. c++) versions of the game recently was the ability to download Add-Ons which are... user created mods. For free. Currently the system is very limited but it's also completely free and the FAQ states there's no marketplace for them at this current time.
Meanwhile the original Java edition of the game that everyone is familiar as the main moddable version will suffer no changes and straight from the mouth of Microsoft "We plan on actively supporting the Java Edition going forward with updates as we always have" so the option for players to continue playing and modding the original version on PC as always will remain open.
Posted this before, but it's again relevant;
Minecraft was released 6 years ago. But just today 17,398 people bought the game.
The world is really big. Remember how you stumbled across this? And how every 59/60 stumbled across and just hit it? That's happening constantly.
The numbers of people who are online at any one point aren't something we intuitively understand, like the distance to the moon. It's not how we're built. We deal with 'a crowd' of people being a few dozen. We literally aren't wired in a way to understand how many a million people really is.
I can't tell you 100% that the numbers you're seeing are real and not part of the joke, but they don't look unrealistic to me in the slightest. Just because you've known about it for a day doesn't mean everyone has. If anything I expect the counts to go up as weekend hits and more people finish their work week and stumble across the button.
TL:DR - Just because you know about this doesn't mean everyone else does, and large numbers aren't intuitive.
Official website with real time counter: https://minecraft.net/
Absolutely incredible. Three years ago, I thought the game would be well and truly dead by 2018. I thought people would lose interest, YouTubers would move on, and some kind of competition would replace it entirely. Some of these things are true, but Minecraft is far from dead.
It's truly incredible how much of an impact Minecraft has made. I'm so happy to see it still thriving. Here's to another million! =)
Edit: It's been 28 minutes since I posted this, and 300 more people have bought the game. Insane.
The official numbers are pretty clear. 106 Million total sales as of 2016. 26 Million PC (java) sales as of today.
I have just found a way to still have custom player heads however it is a very long way of doing it. Here goes
First of all make sure you have a backup of your current skin so you don't loose it
1) Go to the profile page on minecraft.net. Upload the texture you want the player head to have as your skin and then go into game.
2) stick this command in a command block, stick your player name in and run it.
give @p skull 1 3 {SkullOwner:<yourplayername>}
3) You should now have a skull with the texture you want. From here you can use this skull in your world and the texture won't change because it is based on a static url unique to that texture.
4) You can then go back to the profile page and change back to your original skin you had before this and when you go back to game your skin should be back to normal but the player head you made should still have the texture you want it to have
Edit: SkullOwner not CustomOwner
Well no, in a perfect world this should never happen. It really doesn't look professional.
That said, sometimes they move an update forward and it breaks the launcher or causes glitches like this, and the best they can do is fix it when it comes to their attention.
Report bugs here: https://minecraft.net/en-us/bugs/
The game got sold for 2 billion to Microsoft, not to mention the gains the company got since the start, over 17m people has bought the game
Sources:
https://mojang.com/2014/09/yes-were-being-bought-by-microsoft/
Edit: 17m+ people have bought it for mac and PC, don't know any numbers on pocket or xbox, but it adds up to even more
> Java players, we haven't forgotten you - the incredibly hard-working Java team are almost done putting together the Update Aquatic for your version – why not try the latest Java pre-release to experience some of the Aquatic features right now?
It’s mojang’s April fools joke!
https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/java-edition-textures-finally-perfected
This is the default textures for today. It will be back to normal tomorrow. You have to live with it for today.
And it’s not Notch’s problem because he has sold Minecraft to Microsoft.
Minecraft was released 6 years ago. But just today 13,184 people bought the game. ~~SIX PER SECOND~~

...
Have to admit though, this is a hell of a test for seeing a rough estimate on how many active users they have.
I've heard some people saying polar bears were a useless addition to the game, but wasn't aware of any backlash per say. Personally, I don't care if they have a use or not, they don't have to. I think they were a nice addition, and their backstory is awesome.
If you have a semi-decent PC, I'd recommend getting the PC edition. In terms of re-playability it'll last a lot longer than Pocket Edition. I've been playing the game for over 5 years now and haven't had enough of it yet!
https://minecraft.net/ is where you can buy the PC version of the game.
There's just so much to do in Minecraft, despite it's initial simplicity. A lot of people who have seen the game but never played it, just think it's a mining game with bad graphics, but it's so much more.
I can't really put the game into words, but it's community as well offers so much more than many other games.
Maybe worth noting that Wii U isn't getting cross-play but it is getting the rest of the Update Aquatic features. This is the last update for old consoles though.
>What’s next?
>We’ll be continuing to develop Add-Ons over the next year as we work towards a fully customizable Minecraft. In the coming months we’ll be working on unlocking behavior change for blocks, and even more ways you can modify gameplay. Let us know what you think about the Add-Ons system and what you’d like to see at feedback.minecraft.net.
I'm glad to know that they are planning to let the users modify not just mob entities, but also blocks and game mechanics.
Kind of curious about this. Doesn't he need Mojan's permission if he's making money off of what is essentially about 99% Mojang content?
IANAL, but glancing over their MINECRAFT NAME, BRAND AND ASSETS USAGE GUIDELINES it sounds like they would be okay if this guide was free rather it being sold for a fee (commercial use).
I didn't see any other comments regarding this. I guess I'm the only one wondering this because I sometimes work with logos and copyright projects.
Looks great though!
Ah, I think you got bit by the Microsoft branding stuff. There's actually two different versions of Minecraft involved here:
Minecraft Windows 10 edition - judging from what that page says to do (tie into xbox accounts, etc), this is the version you're trying to get and having the problems with. But there's also:
Just plain Minecraft This is Minecraft 1.8, and it requires you to jump through fewer hoops. You'd still have to link your Minecraft and Mojang accounts (that happened Pre-MS) but it sounds like you've already done that.
It only is code that will never be run because it is in a png file. Their definition of malware is having the code on your computer, not that it will do anything.
Edit: Proof: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-java-edition-skins-issue-update
When minecraft was in early stages, you could create an account with a username, and then not actually buy the game. Now of course, you can't get a username until you have paid for the game.
So a lot of cool usernames were taken by people who didn't actually purchase the game. Now those non-premium usernames will be put back into the system as unused usernames.
You can test if a name was taken and not paid for using this url : https://minecraft.net/haspaid.jsp?user=whatevernamegoeshere
replace the last section with the name you want to check, and it say true if the account has been bought, or false if its non premium. If its false, it means it's either taken and not paid for, or it was never taken at all(meaning you could create an account right now and take that name).
So a username like "lol" was taken, but not paid for, meaning when the names are released, someone will have the opportunity to take that name again, and they could use it or in this case, it would probably be worth a lot of money and could be resold for a profit
Is that what they're referring to here, or is this another relevant instance?
> On September 18th 2010, the Minecraft webserver crashed due to the sheer amount of players signing up. Markus made the game free to compensate, causing yet another spike in downloads.
This was before the beta in December 2010.

The Java dev team has just added about 10 blocks including a grindstone, a stonecutter & a blast furnace. It seems they finally realised not all things can be made by crafting or smelting.

> Q: When will the Better Together Update launch? > A: The Better Together Update will launch this Autumn, once it’s ready and we’ve satisfactorily evicted bugs from the premises.
It was originally slated for Summer. EDIT: Original source of Summer release
> So this Summer, all platforms receiving the Better Together Update...
Basically, Villages are now being updated to have different structures for each biome and are being added to new biomes such as jungle and their skins are being updated to be a bit more detailed and biome depended. Additonally, new mobs called Pillagers will attack villages along with Illager Beasts (not the final name yet) from time to time. You can read more about everything they announced at Minecon Earth here: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/everything-we-announced-minecon-earth-2018
>Correction: you can't add your own entity, you can only alter an already existing entity. Like on bukkit/spigot where you have to sacrifice something vanilla to get something new. Nether is anywhere near what Java Edition mods can do. They can actually add new stuff.
Indeed, my bad. I should've said latest Beta, not latest Release.
>Previously, add-ons only allowed you to modify existing mobs in the game, but with New Entities you can add more mobs. You can use Data Driven Spawning to control which mobs spawn in your worlds. Animations will give you more customisation options, so you’ll be able to craft the horrifying eight-legged mob of your dreams/our nightmares. Particles will let you pretty up your mobs with cool effects.
It's not a red panda, it's a Qinling Panda. Also, yes, foxes are being added, as taiga won the vote.
> As someone pointed out, Minecraft has nearly reached market saturation
I dunno, https://minecraft.net/stats has shown consistent sales day to day for years. It usually hovers around 10k/day. I think there are still a lot of people out there who haven't played, who might enjoy doing so.
if you have java you get windows 10 edition free, i cannot remember if there is a clause to it but if you go to your mojang account (not minecraft.net) you can redeem a code and put it into the Microsoft store, although i do not play windows 10 edition (other than making my render distance 200 and look in awe with how big it is) then i let my little brother at my mums house play it
He may mean this one. It's from this article.
I can't tell you anything about it other than what's been announced, but there are some tidbits released:
The trailer and more info is here: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/announcing-minecraft-dungeons
I have it on my computer at work, and I can't wait for the release so I can play it with my friends :)
Unfortunately, 1.12 is already feature-complete. Small things may still be changed (e.g. adding the "base" Shulker color jeb_ talked about), but something like seasons are almost certainly too big for this version. (To be honest, they probably won't come next version, either, as it sounds like they already have a vague idea of what 1.13 will be themed around, but it's always good to put the thought out there. Maybe 1.14?)
The basic steve skin is 1,350 bytes. 1,350 * 25,000,000 = 33,750,000,000 bytes which is 33.75GB.
Even if we assume the average custom skin is 4 times the size of the default giving us ~150GB of used space thats still an extremely small amount.
Edit: Changed my numbers to the official steve.png
While it doesn't surprise me how popular Minecraft still is, it boggles my mind how many copies of Minecraft still are being sold today. > In the last 24 hours, 12.857 people bought the game.
Who are these people? Children that suddenly are old enough to play Minecraft and get roped in by their friends?
this quote from jeb fits here:
"Whenever we discover we have a bug which is used by the community we just see it as 'undefined behaviour' - and ‘fix’ it by making it a feature."
I hope they'll do something.
The official site is minecraft.net. If you want to play with an Xbox user you need Minecraft for Windows 10. Minecraft: Java has no console cross play. The reason to get the Java edition is to have the old more open version of the game. The point of the new version was to lock down modding so they could curate them and have paid mods and paid cosmetics. So you pick between an open modding version or a cross platform multiplayer version. Both versions have both single player and multiplayer worlds.
That happened long before Mojang sold out. There's the Minecraft store, chock full of merchandise, the Minecraft Story Mode game by Telltale, and, of course, a movie. Most of that happened long before the buyout.
Hey, I'm reading all your thoughts and I'm very interested in what everyone thinks about the villagers. I've recognized this problem and made sure it wont be an issue, it might be hard to see from the video but I think the villagers are distinct enough. You'll notice when you play with them!
Before, some professions shared a texture like the butcher and librarian, they both had white aprons, which made it very hard to know on a glance which one was which, you'd have to walk to them and check it out. That's why we have decided to make all the profession textures unique. The profession textures will be the same across all biomes to keep this simplistic consistency to it - The player will only have to learn once which one is which and I hope It'll be intuitive enough to learn fast. It's been a challenge to translate certain professions in one skin, with no specific surroundings that can help build the character. It all had to be in the tiny skin. To help with this and make some of the silhouettes more distinct we decided to add hats. Most of the things you've already suggested are already applied! I wanted to keep some of the spirit of the old textures alive, that's why the cleric is purple. The butcher and librarian still wear white as well and the blacksmiths all have the same aprons with minor adjustments to show their profession.
To take a closer look, there are some nice images in here. They also have more stuff on their backs to show of their profession but you can't see that yet! https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/everything-we-announced-minecon-earth-2018
You could also start a LAN game if you and your girlfriend are on the same network. It works exactly the same as a single player world. The way you do this is start any single player world; press Esc and choose open to LAN. Then when player 2 wants to join they click on multi player and you should see at the bottom of the server list something like "Searching for LAN games" , wait a few seconds and a 'server' should appear allowing them to join your world.
If you have an anti-virus it could block the communication between the network so if you can't seem to get it to work it could be that. Most anti-virus have a gaming mode which will probably fix the issue.
Or alternatively you could just download and run a server yourself here. This however does require you to port forward, or (what me and my friends used to do) was download a program called evolve that allows your computers to communicate as if they were on one network.
They're not in any release yet, but pandas and some other upcoming features are in the beta for Bedrock Edition. See this article for more information.
Well, Mob B won! Hope you will enjoy that.
Update aquatic focusing on oceans! It includes a ton of new stuff, like tridents, dolphins, ect. More about it at the link at the bottom.
Some more news on 4K as well.
Adventure Time Minecraft themed episode is coming in 2018! I never have seen adventure time, but I'll have to watch a bit.
This is an overall view on the minecraft.net page: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/everything-announced-minecon-earth
You only have to buy it once, for life. No time limits, and no recurring payments.
Make sure you register with an email you can actually access. :P
Link to the official site. Click the big green button and it'll walk you through account creation and purchasing.
sounds like realms could be perfect for you and your gf.
It can do automated backups and you can download them too
edit: a more detailed guide about realms
Still Exists. Good luck getting Java to allow you to play it, though. It just throws security errors because the jar is outdated and now invalid. Sure there must be a way, though.
Funny. You seem to have perfectly reproduced their positions, colors, and exact pixels. It even has the same background with the same color, and even the same random orange spot (small sun?) above the bottom one's wing.
^(Seriously, if you want to copy something, at least try to make it look original. This is an exact copy. Even if you did "make" it, you just reproduced someone else's work.)
Link to where it was posted for those curious (scroll down to find it, it's in the story)
According to this MCF is an official Minecraft resource. Exactly what the hell that means nobody knows anymore since Mojang's legal team is as about as predictable as an eye floater.
Mojang releases development versions (called "snapshots") of upcoming updates every week. OP is playing on one of those versions.
There's instructions on how to get snapshot releases at the bottom of this page. Just remember that they're occasionally very buggy.
>Where do people get performance from
That would be from Mojang:
Should we interpret "run better than ever" to mean something other than performance?
If you are using a PC, and that PC is not Windows 10, you have one choice: "Minecraft: Java Edition". If you buy this (from here) you also get a free code for the Windows 10-only version.
IRL gatherings will be replaced by Official Minecraft Community Events.
In the last hour, the PC/Java version of the game sold 7431 copies. Then when you add the sales for the mobile, console and Win10 versions (which aren't publicly shown but are probably higher than the PC/Java version), you have enough proof to show that Minecraft isn't going to die for quite some time.
More info here. This is the long-promised modding system for the non-Java version of Minecraft, separating the core game logic from the editable variables. This is unlike the Java version, where modding delves into the code which is all mixed together, and where it is normal to use separate mod manager software in an attempt to stop mods conflicting with each other.
I think they did say something about improving how villages generate, not just changing the buildings, so it could work with difficult terrain better. They did specifically mention the jungle villagers on the website announcement. Though they don't say 'every' biome, so hard to say how many variations there will be.
If you buy Minecraft: Java Edition from minecraft.net, you get a free code for Minecraft for Windows 10 too. You can claim the free code from the Mojang Account. Your son can try them both out and decide which they prefer to play

> Anyone playing the game on Windows 10, iOS, Android, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and VR devices will be able to play online together. If you own Minecraft for your mobile or VR device, you'll get this as a free update this summer. If you own Minecraft: Xbox One Edition or Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, you’ll receive the brand new version of Minecraft for free, and your existing worlds and DLC will come along to the new version with you. What’s more, any DLC you purchase will be accessible amongst the various devices at no extra charge. (For example: if you buy the Greek Mythology pack on Nintendo Switch, you’ll also own it on the mobile, Xbox One and Windows 10 Editions too - no extra charge).
Coincidentally he might love the shit out of Minecraft if you've never given him that to try before. Apart from being your own simple world to explore, it's got rail stuff to move things around once you get yourself "set up".
Turns out I was wrong.
Q: Are there infinite worlds in Minecraft?
I'm very interested to find out how they managed to get around the console dev storage restrictions. I'm also interested to know how this will work on the Switch, with limited mobile storage space.
Probably you don't know about yesterday's announcements. This summer Xbox One and Nintendo Switch are getting the PE/Win10 version (Bedrock Codebase) as a replacement to the previous console versions. This version will be known as "Minecraft". This version will allow for cross-play, world transfer and DLC transfer across every supported device.
PS4 and old-gen consoles will keep the old console versions. Java will be officially named "Java Edition". Source
So it will be something like this:
>Instead of geological systems we get 7 ores with the same texture and new types of stone.
The current ores have been here for years. There's not a lot of reason to add more.
>Instead of fully developing villages we get ugly Squidwards, whose only purpose is selling apples and iron hoes for the rarest ore in the game.
Villagers can actually be really good for acquiring rare materials. Mending books, for example.
>Modding API? What's this shit?
No argument here.
>Instead, unneeded RPG elements are implemented: enchanting, brewing, new combat, dungeons and shit bosses - and of course, these features are poorly done too.
Enchanting and brewing have been in the game since version 1.0.0, which came out in 2011. Bit late to complain about those being added at this point.
The new combat actually makes the game a bit more of a challenge. It's a nice change, but it takes some getting used to.
The Woodland Mansion dungeon that was added recently looks neat, though it doesn't give a lot of great loot.
The last boss was added in 2012. They haven't been adding any for years.
Also, I don't think you can really say that its dying if its selling 5k copies of the PC/Java version per day and has been doing so for years.
Laterns seem to have come from Minecraft: Dungeons, so it could be that game is built off of regular minecraft and we'll see blocks and items from the new game.
I do agree that Bane of Arthropods should be more useful, but the "Meet the Shulker" article describes shulkers as being "mollusc-like" (and they are more like clams in my opinion).
In the original announcement they said only the winning mob would be added to the game.
From: Vote a New Mob Into Minecraft: >You'll be able to vote for your favourite mob during the show, with the least popular mobs knocked out until only one remains. This winning mob, as chosen by you, will be permanently added to Minecraft!
During MINECON Earth, they conducted three rounds of voting, with a least people’s mob from each round being eliminated.
Mob A was eliminated in the first round.
Unfortunately, it’s not available in the ~~Curse~~ Twitch launcher. You can download it from Minecraft.net, but be careful: since it’s a third-party site, it might contain malware, so be sure to scan any file you download with an anti-virus (or VirusTotal) before launching any executable.
Anyway, Minecraft is a fantastic mod. It offers a bunch of cool decorative blocks, storage blocks (e.g., chests, double chests, and shulker boxes), mobs, bosses, and more. It even features redstone, which is a power system that allows you to create very intricate machinery, such as mob farms and crop farms.
Minecraft is honestly one of my favourite mods. I highly recommend it. direwolf20 even made a mod spotlight on Minecraft a few years ago, although it’s a bit outdated now.
Almost. Currently, only Pocket Edition (iOS, Android, Windows 10 Mobile), Windows 10 Edition (Windows 10, Oculus Rift), Apple TV Edition, FireTV Edition and Gear VR Edition have cross-play. These editions are being renamed to just Minecraft.
This autumn, version 1.2 aka The Better Together Update will introduce cross-platform play for users on iOS, Android, Windows 10 Mobile, Gear VR, Apple TV, FireTV, Windows 10, Oculus Rift, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch playing Minecraft.
Minecraft: Java Edition runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. So all players running this version can cross-play via Realms or servers.
All other editions of the game can only play with players on the same platform. E.g. PS4 Edition with other PS4 Edition players, Xbox 360 Edition with other Xbox 360 Edition players.
Edit: Updated comment to include Apple TV, FireTV, Gear VR, Oculus Riff, and Windows 10 Mobile. Thanks to u/TheBdude and u/coip for the info.
the PC version is the most updated with all the latest features, and access to all multiplayer servers. 100% recommend it over PE or console edition.
https://minecraft.net/en/store/minecraft/
i would also recommend getting the mod "optifine" if the game does not run super well on the laptop.
Why not fucking buy it, you and everyone else who's been begging? It says the Java Edition costs £18, and the amount of hours you get out of it makes it probably the cheapest entertainment you can buy.
You'll need to purchase a license for Minecraft: Java Edition from minecraft.net, and then log in with a Mojang Account.
If you had you purchased Minecraft: Java Edition first, you would've got Minecraft for Windows 10 (the edition you already have) for free.
If you already own Minecraft: Java Edition, you can download it from minecraft.net/download
If you do not already own Minecraft: Java Edition, you will need to purchase it from minecraft.net.
After installing it, you can sign in with your Mojang Account to play.
Hey everyone, I found something else. I googled "Minecraft Marketplace" because I see them talk about that a lot.
That image for "Minecraft Coins" that you buy with real cash is actually already in use.
The whole UI looks very similar to what is showcased here. https://minecraft.net/en-us/marketplace/
Now, this could just be a really good fake still. Maybe someone was trolling us. I really hope /u/RobotPanthers sees this thread and lets us know where they got the album from.
I'm wondering if /u/jeb_ might be alluding at all to a statement /u/xNotch made on the Minecraft website, which was removed at some point towards the end of 2012.
>Once sales start dying and a minimum time has passed, I will release the game source code as some kind of open source. I'm not very happy with the draconian nature of (L)GPL, nor do I believe the other licenses have much merit other than to boost the egos of the original authors, so I might just possibly release it all as public domain.
Minecraft Windows 10 Beta can join Pocket Edition servers, but not yet normal Minecraft desktop servers (which is what the majority of servers are).
If you've got the normal desktop version of Minecraft, then you can still use that on Windows 10 computers. (Log in, press "Download")
MC:Win10E (Windows 10 Edition) is essentially MC:PE (Pocket Edition). The reason MC:Win10E is available on desktops is because it's on the Windows Store which is intended to be universal across all Windows 10 devices (tablets, phones, laptops, desktops, etc.).
I'm sure there are still 'classic' servers for version ~~0.0.23b~~ 0.0.30 or w/e Notch left it at before he announced survival mode.
Edit: https://minecraft.net/classic/list
Turns out quite a few actually
You don't have to buy minecraft again. You just need to log in into your account on minecraft.net and download official launcher for java version. If you want to play Bedrock version (with mobile/console cross-play) you can try this: https://github.com/minecraft-linux/mcpelauncher-manifest/wiki
The last update was "the last big effort to keep those editions up to date with our newer versions of the game." (probably specifically referring to bringing new features like mobs, biomes, and what not) according to the article on the official Minecraft website, It probably didn't take to much effort to bring the bug fixes and Mash up pack to the Wii U when compared to a major feature update like Update Aquatic what is probably why they decided to to bring this update to Wii U.
LAN means local area network. All players need to be on the same local network (e.g. wi-fi, ethernet) to connect to a LAN world. To play with others online, you can create a Realm, which is like a private always online server hosted by Mojang, or setup and host your own server.
As an alternative, owners of Minecraft: Java Edition can get a free redemption code for Minecraft (Bedrock) for Windows 10. Minecraft (Bedrock) has easy online play using a free Xbox Live account. It can also cross-play with Minecraft (Bedrock) on Windows 10, mobile, Xbox One, and Switch if that makes things easier for you.
It's listed as unofficial here.
However, "unofficial" on that page only means that Mojang doesn't run the site, so that doesn't mean much, especially since it's still listed.
The more important thing here is that the current devs don't really go there anymore, as shown by the recent lack of official answers and such on that site.

Q: Are there infinite worlds in Minecraft?
> A: Yes! And, if you play with a world from Minecraft: Xbox One Edition or Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition it will keep generating more world when you get to the old edge of your map.
Christ it seems like everyone is confused about this. This post is a misleading mess.
The new Bedrock Engine is not being created for the graphics update. It will improve performance, but given how poorly optimized Minecraft has been since its beginnings back as a side project in 2009, the game just needed it. It probably has something to do with enabling cross-play, as well, given as how it doesn't seem that the Playstation 4 is getting it. I could be wrong, as the official website doesn't actually specify it.
On top of that, the Super Duper Graphics pack, slated for a fall release, is not coming to the Switch. "The pack will be released on Xbox One and Windows 10, performing best on high-end PCs and Project Scorpio." (Source) It would be nice for screenshots but would run like crap, if at all, during actual gameplay on the Switch, and I doubt it would run at all on most phones.
Additionally, Better Together will include a server list for massive multiplayer servers (Which will probably consist of entirely minigames or creative plots as opposed to survival gameplay). Any DLC bought on Windows 10 Edition, Pocket Edition, XBox One Edition, or Switch Edition will be available on all of the listed platforms, and I assume any DLC you already have purchased will become available on those platforms, as well.
Another small change to note is that instead of being named "Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition" or "Minecraft: Pocket Edition," they will all just be called "Minecraft."
Also, OP, you don't even seem to know what HDR is, judging by some of the comments. After looking it up, I don't really think it would even matter for the Switch, given as how it's not getting the Super Duper Graphics pack. You are just as confused as everyone else, really.
60 million meters squared (The total surface area of a Minecraft world) is 3.6E15 square meters.
The most accurate figure for the amount of active players comes from https://minecraft.net/en-us/stats/. At the time of writing this comment, 25,614,914 people have bought the Java version of Minecraft.
3.6E15 / 25,614,914 is about 140,543,123, so everyone gets 140,543,123 m^2 to play around in, which is equivalent to a 11,855*11,855 m square. There is way more than enough space than what is needed for every single player of the game to have a happy survival experience.
There's no minecraft version for the wii, only for the wii u. The version with the most features is the pc version which can be bought on minecraft.net. I'r recommend it but it's pretty resource intensive so make sure to check the system requirements. There is also a windows 10 version which doesn't have as many features but runs better. It can be bought on xbox live.
The game can also be played on mobile. It can be bought in the app store. Feature wise it's exactly like the windows 10 version.
There's a "peaceful" difficulty mode without hostile monsters so scary monsters are no problem.

According to the blog when they were released, yes they are. It's just supposed to be rare.
>Can also generate out of the water, slightly underground or slightly above sea level.
I feel like this needs to be stated loudly:
From the 18w06a announcement:
> Customized Worlds > > ... don't work in this snapshot. Sorry. We have plans to re-add them in a much more extendible way, but unfortunately we were not able to have that ready yet. You will be unable to open any world of type "customized" in this snapshot, it will tell you to revert to an old version to play in those worlds.
The overhaul wasn't completed for the 1.13 launch, but there has been no indication that the work has been scrapped. Maybe they'll have further information about it at the next MineCon coming up on the 29th.
>why is there a store?
Money. For both Microsoft/Mojang and the content creators they partnered with. You don't have to use it if you don't want to.
>why are the servers not as fun?
That's kinda subjective, but I guess it can't be helped considering the Bedrock edition doesn't have a lot of available servers.
>Why do you have to pay a monthly subscription to play parts of the game?
You only need to pay for a subscription if you want to get a multiplayer world through the Realms service, which is completely optional. It's a much more user-friendly way to play multiplayer, as it takes away many of the technical aspects. But as hosting servers cost money, so does Realms.
I think they were working on releasing free dedicated server software though, so that you can host your own server if you want to (similar to what the Java Edition currently has). Haven't heard anything about when it's supposed to release though.
>why did this happen?
For the store; it's because content creators deserve some money for their work.
For Realms; it's because getting multiplayer working on the Java edition isn't user-friendly, and requires a decent amount of research and effort to get it working. Realms solves those problems by offering multiplayer worlds that have already been completely set up and ready to go.
>who caused this?
Well, Mojang is still in charge of everything Minecraft, so...
Incidentally, you know the original Java edition (the same one you played when you were 12) is still available, right? You can still buy and download it from minecraft.net, and it's still receiving updates. This edition is different in that it doesn't have a store and does have dedicated server software. Still has Realms though, but again that's optional.
It was literally in the change logs of the snapshot that removed them: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-snapshot-18w06a

Minecraft (Bedrock) will receive 4K HDR and enhanced graphics in an upcoming update.^[1]
Mojang has not announced similar plans for Minecraft: Java Edition.

This update marks the end of an era for a lot of us. I'm a linux player and it's really sad to see what's happening to a game that's been known for being supported on lots of platforms. Mac players are in the same boat.
The Java version is eventually going to stop being developed, I guarantee it. The only thing we have going for us, for now, is that there is a massive mod community out there for the Java version that may keep people from switching. But Microsoft is definitely trying to change that with the Minecraft Marketplace
Sad, but not surprising.
The bleeding box costs nearly $150. You can buy a lot more MC merch for that sort of money. Check out some of the suggestions from the official MC site:
https://minecraft.net/en/article/our-top-ten-stocking-stuffers
This data comes from unique players per month numbers for any game around. LoL is wildly more popular than Minecraft or Super Mario.
DATA:
Minecraft has been downloaded nearly 21 million times https://minecraft.net/stats
As of 2014 over 27 million UNIQUE people play LoL per DAY
As of 2014 over 67 million players play Lol per month http://www.riotgames.com/articles/20140711/1322/league-players-reach-new-heights-2014
A quick google would have found you any of that information :). Would have posted information about Super Smash Bros which is more than likely less popular than Minecraft, but couldn't find the stats for it.
I have a script set up with a cron job that runs:
curl -s https://minecraft.net/haspaid.jsp?user=USERNAME | grep false && curl -u PUSHBULLETAPIKEY: https://api.pushbullet.com/v2/pushes -d type=note -d title="Minecraft Username Availabilty" -d body="The username, USERNAME, is now available."
Sorry if the command is messed up, I'm on my phone and had to copy that from my mobile ssh client.
> Microsoft needs to make this money back, and they can't do it with Minecraft 1 because that version is already fairly saturated.
But it isn't! When I last checked this it said they sold 11,000 copies in the last 24 hours, for PC/Mac alone (not counted the Pocket Edition, which has actually sold the most copies). At $27 a game, that's like $300k a day. That's not counting merchandising, and all the other versions of the game on other devices. The costs of keeping this running are very low, so we're talking well over a hundred million dollars a year in direct revenue.
Plus the saturation is exactly what they're buying: like Penny-Arcade said, they are buying a generation. Even if they do nothing at all other than slapping their name on it (in addition than letting the current cash-flow continue), you're going to have eight-year-olds thinking of Microsoft as "those guys that make Minecraft", and that's huge image for their image. The most popular paid app on Android is now a Microsoft game. It's even in the top 25 on the PS3. This is Microsoft taking a major share in almost every platform that exists!
The recession, or rather it's length, is caused by employers improving the productivity of employees through automation. During the dot-com boom companies still needed all the same things done, but we didn't have the processing power or the software to do anything yet. Now?
Minecraft has nearly 15 million sales and consists of 39 employees. At $20, that's over $7.5 million in revenue per employee. This is the way of things now.
https://help.mojang.com/customer/portal/articles/331367
It is never again going to be an "employee's" market.
No, at least for the Java edition.
The Bedrock editions of the game have a "marketplace" where people can buy maps/skins/textures/whatever.
The marketplace items are limited by what the Bedrock edition can currently do. Bedrocks "api" is still very limited and has nowhere near the functionally Java edition mod developers have, which is basically only limited by the abilities of the developer.
Here's Mojangs official page on Bedrock Add-ons.
It's unlikely Mojang will ever have an official API or sell mods for the Java edition (which at this point is probably for the best).
Buffet is NOT replacing customized worlds. The customized option was removed temporarily because it needed to be fixed and updated. I assure you that there was never any intention to get rid of it.
Read here under the Customized Worlds heading, and here where Grum confirms that Customized will return at some point after 1.13.
You will be able to play your Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition (renamed to Minecraft) world on Xbox One with the new Minecraft when it is officially released.
This will be possible by uploading your world to a Realm from your PC and then downloading it on Xbox. During the beta this won't be possible as Realms are not currently supported.
They are also investigating the possibility of importing worlds and add-ons to Xbox via USB. They have also not stated whether the new Minecraft will support Xbox Live cloud saves.
Mojang/Microsoft really need to communicate this better. Here's the deal:
1.2 aka The Better Together Update is the next major version of Minecraft: Pocket and Windows 10 Edition. This update will unify the game on iOS, Android, Windows 10 Mobile, Gear VR, Apple TV, FireTV, Windows 10, Oculus Rift, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch under one version—Minecraft—and introduce cross-platform play.
The Better Together Update for Xbox One Edition and Nintendo Switch Edition isn’t a traditional update, but actually a whole new version of the game. Owners of Xbox One Edition and Nintendo Switch Edition will get Minecraft for free. This new version will allow cross-platform play between other Minecraft players.
Minecraft will be able to convert and import your existing Xbox One Edition and Nintendo Switch Edition worlds. Most DLC (with the exception of console exclusives) you previously purchased will be available in Minecraft and be available to use on all-platforms using a free Xbox Live account.
Xbox One Edition and Nintendo Switch Edition will no longer be available for purchase nor receive future updates. Owners of these editions will still be able to play their worlds and the included mini-games.
All other editions will also to continue to receive future updates, but can only play with other players on the same platform. E.g. PS4 Edition with other PS4 Edition players, Wii U Edition with other Wii U Edition players.
Better Together FAQ: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/better-together-faq
There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer.
Sales are still fairly strong; the game is still being developed. It's not useful to try to make a date.
