>This year’s top-rated cities are Colorado Springs, Boise, Houston, Austin and Louisville, Ky.
Of those cities the only one I'd consider living in over Sacramento is Austin.
Also this was a survey of 12,500 small-businesses owners nationwide. So it isn't like it can be said to be objective.
Also the title is a lie.
thanks for /u/undeadbill for the link http://www.thumbtack.com/ca/sacramento/#/2014/1
Cities that they are counting as "Sacramento" of the people the surveyed for "Sacramento"
So more not Sacramento than actual Sacramento.
Take a look at Thumbtack. I've hired a few people through that site and have been happy with the work. It's just a good way to connect with customers for small jobs. It's growing slowly, but there aren't many service providers on it yet, so it might be a good chance to get in on the ground floor.
If you're not already using the app Nextdoor, I would sign up. People in my neighborhood are constantly looking for people to do small projects.
You might want to offer a "new home" package where you would change the locks, toilet seats, hang any new bathroom fixtures (towel bars, mirrors, etc), fix light switches/plugs. . .stuff like that so the place is spruced up before moving in. Like, that stuff is easy to do, but a lot of people don't have time to get that stuff done AND move.
Just off the top of my head some good things to think about might be laying/repairing bathroom tile; installing new faucets, ceiling fans, garbage disposals, etc; wall mounting TVs; hanging cabinets; replacing light switches and plugs; installing security cameras or video doorbells; hanging cabinets and shelves; building simple closet systems; building fences; assembling furniture; and removing wall paper.
If you decide to do it, let me know! Clearly, I've been thinking about this and have some projects that need to be done around the house.
Well, the title of the post from the blog is "These 4+ Startup Copywriting Mistakes Will Kill Your Page". That seems to me like it is advice.
You also have no idea if the new version is better until you try it. When people do marketing for a living they quickly learn that it is difficult to predict what works and what doesn't until you test it. What happens if version 2 isn't as good as you thought it was? Are you going to write another blog post as an addendum to this one?
If you want to blog about how exciting your startup is, I wont get on your case. Startups can be fun and exciting and if you want to share that with the world, go for it. Just don't write blog posts giving advice to other people, especially if it's essentially off the cuff. It's a double crime: The advice is probably bad for the reader and you wasted a bunch of time writing it.
If you still want to give advice, then at least give me data. Write something like this:
> We used to have an older version that converted at 5%. Then we a/b tested version 2 and the conversion rate was 10%. Using an a/b testing calculator, I've verified the results are significant. Here are major differences between the versions that I believed accounted for the improvement.
I would contact Nick Fowler:
http://www.thumbtack.com/ca/venice/surf-lessons/surf-instructor
I just started working with him. He works out of Venice beach. He's an awesome dude, grew up surfing in Hawaii, he's absolutely what you're looking for. He provides the board, wetsuit and will get you up your first time out, highly recommended. Tell him Tyler sent you.
I was researching catering/private chefs today and found this website. http://www.thumbtack.com You can fill out the questionnaire of what you are looking for and they will match you with catering companies and personal chefs with wedding experience. I didn't personally get any quotes but I read the reviews on some people that seemed promising and made mental notes . My original plan was making everything myself, I'm going with a more tapas style party (crudité, meat and cheese platters, salads, bruschetta, stuff like that) instead of the full blown formal dinner thing. Then the more I though about it the more I was thinking it could be cheaper and easier getting someone else to do it and just work with them explaining what I was envisioning. Plus I don't think me or my family will have time to prepare food for about 70 ppl, on top of decorating and setting up. :]
THIS person has it correct.
This isn't just a matter of money. Contracts are meant to protect BOTH parties. If you hire them for their time, that means they don't have to release the photos. They can put any of their work on their website or sell it if you don't explicitly say they cannot in writing.
I know how expensive wedding planning can be - we ALL know. But honestly, hear me out: Ten years from now, your dress will be outdated and likely won't fit. Your cake will be long-gone. Your food from your reception will be way long gone. You might have a centerpiece saved, somewhere in a box in an attic. Your programs/invites MIGHT be framed, but otherwise will be in that same box.
Your photos are the ONLY thing you'll really "use" on a daily basis in ten years. They are WORTH the investment. Anyone who invested will tell you that, and most who didn't will tell you they wish they had.
Good luck, OP. Be careful.
ALSO: Try this site. http://www.thumbtack.com
iPhone Steve, I'll dig up his card. Mobile guy but cool and pretty sure he is a redditor. Replaced my batt, fixed my home button, replaced two screens on my brothers phone. He comes to you, quick and priced fair.
Ok this should get you to him; http://www.thumbtack.com/or/portland/iphone-repair/iphone-ipod-touch-upgrades-repairs
My Fiancée does wedding photography/videography, here is a link to her thumbtack profile:
I will say that we may not be still living in the area in September but if we are I know she should be available.
Links for the lazy...
Reddit threads for this site...
I think your best bet is to find them online, a lot of studios are well represented on youtube, and get an idea about them, and see which you can access IRL. A Google search for "los angeles vocaloach" or "voice studio" will get you a good list, too. I found this, too. Other than that, I cannot help with particular suggestions, I'm afraid.
Bear in mind that there are many schools of singing, most proeminent nowadays is the Speech Level Singing (SLS) school, with teachers such as Brett Manning (he has a self-studying DVD course I think). It is used a lot and with great success in pop genres, where you always sing with sound reinforcement (amplification), and thus you don't have to project acoustically over a full orchestra. For pop music, this is healthy and sufficient.
The other is bel canto (what's left of it), literally "beautiful singing", an older system that trains for classical genres but can be applied to anything, including metal vocals. Properly done it takes years, but will take your voice to its complete and full potential, in a healthy way.
I do stuff like this -- my favorite thing to do is this:
Backstory: I drive a saab. I found that one of the best saab mechanics in the US is about 45 min away in his barn..fixing saabs. thats all he does. he's 50 bucks an hour, and amazing. There was a saab that got 1 million miles -anyone remember? -- it got 1 million miles cause this was the guy's mechanic. (story here: A million miles) I got a huge stack of business cards from him and anytime i see a slightly older saab - i put a little note on the back of the card and put it on their windshield.
sometimes the greatest help you can give someone is reliable information on experts that they may need sometime later...
When I go see Larry now (the mechanic) he tells me stories of people coming in who found out about him through a little note on their car - and how happy they are to have found a great honest mechanic. makes me smile every time.
And for those that would like to know- The man in question:

Not perfect, but you can use this site to get a ball park idea. But it's ultimately going to vary widely based on what you wind up getting.

The one thing I would suggest though is the site http://www.Thumbtack.com as a place to start getting a variety of quotes. We've been using that site for just about anything we've needed for years (contractor, plumber, movers, electrician, etc) and it's made life so much easier when it comes to getting quotes together.
I have been remodeling my house/es for the last 20 years. Most good contractors are booked with the current market in Austin and want to do a full remodel (gut the room, new electrical, new plumbing, new sheet rock, trim, paint, etc.) and the going rate is probably $20-40k for a bathroom and $25-50k for a kitchen. Sounds like you don't need a full remodel though. I had good success with http://www.thumbtack.com for smaller/odd jobs than with angies list. You can ask for something specific on thumbtack like your floor project, tell them you already have the material and just need an installer and square footage. You will get a couple quotes pretty quick. Same for the cabinets. If you know what you are doing, pick the cabinets, get them delivered, then ask for a quote to install them. Once the cabinets are in, call http://www.austingranitedirect.com/ to do the granite counter tops. They will measure, deliver and install the counter tops, you don't need a separate installer (that's true for the cabinets as well if you buy something higher end). Your tub may be tricky. Does it have tile on the walls? That is probably going to need to be replaced, what about the faucets and plumbing? You could easily end up doing $5k just for the tub.
If you ask for one crew to do everything you want, you are going to pay a GC to coordinate all of it and add 20% to the price and it may be hard to find someone that wants to take on all the small projects.
Edit: if you do decide to get custom cabinets, I recommend http://ajwoodworks.com/. I have used him twice. He doesn't finish (paint/poly) though, so you would need a painter or someone for that. I finished my own by hand (2+ weeks of work), but I doubt you want to do that.
Thumbtack has a lot of people looking for work but unfortunately i've yet to catch any jobs. works on a token system, you start out with a free bundle, pay for more if you wish, they are returned if the client does not view your quote details within 48 hours. unfortunately i have no way of knowing how the following through process works. but it could work for you!
I suggest using thumbtack.com. You set your own rate range and photographers send you quotes. You could choose "portrait photography" and do a couples' shoot or you can choose "engagement shoot" or even post to both. There is a section for extra details where you can explain your situation. I found my caterer this way.
Just had Kristi from All the Above Cleaning come to the house today. Can't comment on the price (her service today was a Christmas gift) but she did an excellent job on cleaning and is a really nice lady to talk to.
I don't think she has a website, but you can find some reviews and contact here
First and second point:
> (10:29am) 1/17/2015: People calling this fake, divorce attorneys are open on Friday evenings, you can find one through online databases. Also, PIs have flexible hours just because of the type of work they do so I hired one quickly since it was urgent. If you still think it's fake, fuck off, I don't need your shit when I'm going through this tough time.
As further evidence (though since I don't have proof you might call it fake!), my dad handles divorces, and either he or his secretary are in the office every friday until 5pm. He'd absolutely take your call on a Friday evening.
Third point:
PI agency that provides real-time photo and video evidence to their clients
it was also addressed somewhere in the posts
Fourth point:
> (9:55am) 1/17/2015: As I go through the replies, a few people have told me why I included the sexual details, as if I'm bragging. I included them because that is one of the most common reasons people cheat. They aren't getting satisfied, partner is too small, different sex drive levels, etc. Hint Hint: /r/deadbedrooms[1]
Embedded fifth point:
> Additionally, I won't be posting any proof, since anything I post will be an obvious giveaway if they come across this post. I've changed many details so they won't be able to connect the dots just through the posts, the proof will give it away, so I'm sorry if you don't believe me but I'm not posting any pictures.
Once again:
Does that make all of it true? No. But it doesn't make it fake, either. You don't know.
Literally all of those issues were addressed in the posts.
Literally every one.
Does that make it all true?
No.
Does it make it fake?
Also no.
edit: by the way like five minutes of googling found a private investigation agency who updates their client in real-time with photos and video evidence
Pushkin's occasionally has a Nutella cupcake (but they get rotated out every so often). I'm sure you could find some freelance bakers who work from home and request one? Something like this.
If you want some pictures of the game atmosphere (crowd, tailgating, cheerleaders, etc.) then you can probably just browse a site like Flickr for "Minnesota Vikings" and start finding some candidates. If you message them, they may be interested in giving you rights to their pictures for a fee.
I would also search something like "Minnesota Sports Photographer" or "Minneapolis Sports Photographer" and start a conversation with those folks.
You might want to check out ThumbTack. Never used it before, but it could be helpful.
If you're looking for high quality, on-field pictures, this gets exponentially harder. There are few folks who can secure a media pass that gets them close enough to take the action shots. Here are a couple of ideas:
Do some research into Minnesota print news sources. Try to find their Sports writers/editors and track down who they are using for their photography. The trick here is to find a way to contact the photographer directly and see if they are interested in making some extra cash doing a gig they are already going to be doing anyways.
Find a blog similar to yours that covers another NFL team. See where they are getting their images from and start there. Odds are you can probably email their editor or fill out a contact form and they would be happy to discuss where they get their images from.
I haven't used it for plumbing but you should also try posting your call for help on Thumbtack. I haven't used it in an emergency situation before but you basically tell the site what kind of work you need done and it sends the request out to contractors that fire back at you with email quotes. No obligations and last I checked you didn't even need to sign up for an account to post a request.
We're using Debbie Laughlin but we booked her through the Thumbtack site. I had to sift through quite a few quotes before I found her (some were obviously just folks who bought an expensive camera and thought that made them a photographer lol), but she apparently goes on there sometimes and offers discounted packages for couples with smaller budgets.
I think Tess at 7 Sisters & 7 Suns makes some amazing food, vegan, veggie and carnivore. She cooks at Riverwest Food Co-op and Cafe, a vegan and veggie cafe.
http://www.thumbtack.com/7-Sisters-7-Suns-Catering-Milwaukee-WI/service/768328
Edit: Couldn't really find good contact information as it's a small, new business, but you might just call Riverwest Food Co-op and Cafe and ask for Tess.
We use Bloomingvert Cleaners and I can't recommend them highly enough.
We found them through Thumbtack.com and there's more reviews of them available there.
http://www.thumbtack.com/wi/madison/house-cleaning/house-cleaning-services
Pricing should be around $50. Depends if you want service weekly, biweekly, or something else. We found 3 weeks to be the best duration for us.
Thumbtack might be a good service to use. A quick google search for "Drum lessons in <area>" usually brings up the 'Looking for music lessons' page for that area. For example.
I received a few offers from local shops, and a few from freelance guys looking to teach. It seems like a pretty good platform, but I've never used it from the service side.
I know of a great dog walking service run by a young man with special needs. He has good rates and good recommendations from other customers. He also gets accompanied by a professional job coach every time as part of his job development program, so it's almost like two walkers for the price of one. You can check out more info on his business here: http://www.thumbtack.com/pa/pittsburgh/dog-walking/dog-walking-services
It says North Hills but he'll definitely go down to Mt. Washington. Message me if you want more info (I work with his job coach).
My surfing teacher is AWESOME. You'll catch your first wave on the first lesson for sure. He lives in Venice, has gear you can use, and has a great spot with bunny waves to get you started. He's super nice, originally from Hawaii, and has surfed all over the world
Nick Fowler http://www.thumbtack.com/ca/venice/surf-lessons/surf-instructor
Call email/him. Tell him Verona sent you.
Hi, I'm a freelance photographer in New York. I've been doing it for roughly six years and use a variety of Canon gear. I shoot a pretty broad spectrum of stuff: events, commercial stuff, fashion portraits, boudoir, and some product photography. I'm almost entirely self-taught and photography is my business and my life.
I'd be happy to write some tutorials or do a Q&A or just write about specific things if you guys are interested. You can check out my work here:

I have great instructor who gives lessons for $60/90mins (+$10 board/wetsuit rental if you need it). He isn't a stickler for time so will probably go over. He's super cool and I got up and caught my first wave on my own on my first lesson.
I have never skateboarded in my life.

Just started my website Intuitive Tutors !
I am an MD/PhD student at UCLA. I majored in Physics and Chemistry with a math minor undergrad and now am doing a PhD in Pharmacology / Biochemistry / Biomedical Physics (along with Medical School). I can tutor pretty much any high school or college science you've got and my students have done really well with the MCAT / GRE / AP tests.
I do most of my tutoring in Los Angeles / Santa Monica / Brentwood / around UCLA but am open to other setups in Southern California or online.
I'm trying to build my online rep... so am willing to do some tutoring for free if in exchange the student would just honestly review my work on Yelp or Thumbtack.
I recommend using Thumbtack to find what you need. I've used it a few times to find contractors and have been really pleased.
Protip, find someone that is licensed and insured.
I used Scotts Discount Movers recently - they were really good. Priced very well, and the movers themselves were very friendly. Local movers, and the owners were very responsive to emails.
I used Thumbtack.com to find them. Highly recommend using that website, as well. If you mention me, because I was a previous customer, they might give you a discount.
SDM used a flat rate of $90/hr which is pretty cheap, but they do have a three hour minimum charge @ $270 total. I felt it was a great value.
I'll third, second and fourth this, my heat pump water heater has been a beast in this hot weather running mostly on the heat pump and little to no electricic. I ended up getting a Rheem model from Home Depot. This is similar to what I got Rheem 50. Gal except my model is now discontinued.
I found my contractor to install the heat pump on Thumbtack.
*edited because dumb
Will Galbraith, this guy: http://www.thumbtack.com/ok/oklahoma-city/guitar-lessons/guitar-lessons
Has taught my son to play everything from the Fez soundtrack to AC/DC. Excellent and patient teacher plus Bad Ass Guitarist all in one package.
Ok, let me try again.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryogenics
As for chores, might I offer something different?
Edit: My bad, didn't read the minus diet and exercise bit.
Used Thumbtack recently for cleaners, they seem like they'd be a good option for finding affordable movers as well. Companies message you with a quote and you take it from there!
>It's true, no matter how much Democrats bend over backwards to appease Republicans, it is doing nothing but earning their contempt.
NY has the single highest tax burden in the entire country, and received the 4th worst results from a small business survey on small biz conditions. The only backbending the Dems are doing, is bending over the taxpayer and anyone who desires to make something of themselves. Do you think the Dems should stick their ground and attempt to fuck the citizenry with a 30% tax rate on top of federal taxes? We should be lucky that you're here tirelessly fighting until the taxpayers can't afford to feed their families.
http://taxfoundation.org/article/annual-state-local-tax-burden-ranking-fy-2011
http://www.thumbtack.com/survey#/2014/1/states
NY may have the most liberal government in the entire country.
Additionally, the very first result in Google when searching for a designer in MY city is Thumbtack.com; which I, in my never ending quest for more knowledge, signed up for and tried out. Within 30 minutes of submitted a work request, I received messages from 5 designers, all with nice looking websites and work samples, with prices ranging from $99-$140 for a logo design (between 3 of them, 2 others sent messages with requests for more information).
The entire world is literally at your fingertips.
I started my own about a year ago and got some good business from Thumbtack. They charge $3/quote, but I always made most out of asking the client questions before putting a quote out for a job that my competitors might charge less for (Virus Removal vs. Data Backup and OS Re-install).
Putting business cards or fliers printed on decent cardstock are cheap and a great way to get exposure by posting at college campuses, libraries or handing out at local events like the farmers market (its a goldmine). Walking around with my daughter and talking to people about my new local business was a great opener and everyone usually has something to ask you about computers whether they know a lot or nothing. I even got into helping people purchase and setup their new computer or router and give hourly training (something I wasnt originally going for).
Also, you should check out this site: http://www.thumbtack.com/request#Wedding+Makeup/-
You can put in a request for makeup artists in the area, and you might be able to find someone (or a few people) who are convenient, and try them out!
I recently moved from Manayunk to Center City and used Thumbtack to find a mover. You tell them how long (distance-wise) the move is and then different companies will send you quotes. There are even reviews and stuff from people that found their mover this way.
I highly doubt you can get it done for under 100, though. Maybe call up a buddy with a truck to help you out?
What is "Thumbtack.com"? From their front page, they look like some kind of business-oriented social network site.
I'm skeptical of the validity of the poll without more information on their methodology (which is, apparently, available only on request). This page says that they conducted a survey of "over 12,000 small business owners" across the country, but doesn't say how many of them were from Pittsburgh or how they were selected, or specify the questions that were asked.
I'm certainly open to the idea that Pittsburgh might be bad at dealing with small businesses, but I would have appreciated more data and less spin.
Great website on a budget is Thumbtack
You can place an ad and people bid for your business. We used this for our DJ, cake person, and our florist. the one thing we did not cut corners on was the photographer.
Also any money that was not accounted for we put towards the wedding. You can also open a savings account and dump in some of your money (5-10%) from you paycheck via direct deposit this way you wont even look at it. it takes some of the pain away.
Note: 2 weeks prior to the wedding the vendors are going to be asking for their money. My advice is pay it off as you go and it's less painful at the end.
I used Household Heroics through Thumbtack to do my moving out cleaning. I think I called them two or three days before, and they were able to make an appointment for the day I asked for. They did a great job and I got my full deposit back.
Check out thumbtack.com
Vendors purchase leads with credits, price per lead varies based on the service customer is requesting. e.g. one-time cleaning of studio apartment vs weekly-cleaning of four bedroom home
They are super-optimized and have landing pages for almost any local service business you could think of.
Check out pinterest. Figure out what you like and plan from there. Also, check out thumbtack . There you can put out what services you need ex-floral, catering, Dj, etc. and people will contact you. Then you can read their reviews and see if they are the right fit for you. Also, if your city has a bridal fair, GO. Several venues, vendors, officiants, cakes, wedding dress places and more will be there. It was a big help for me.
Ron Billings, if he cant fix your Macbook air he knows someone that will. I used him and couldn't recommend him more.
http://www.thumbtack.com/or/portland/computer-repair/affordable-computer-repair
this place will give a free quote. Not sure on quality. this guy looks like he only works on saturday, lol. But $40 an hour isn't bad.
I live in southern california, and a tech here charges $100 to diagnose what is wrong with an amplifier. You should start with trying to find out if a diagnostic has a flat rate. The guy who does this in my town is one of the more highly respected amp guys in California.
If you can figure out what you need, you can take the time to get the parts slowly over ebay or something. Ultimately, if it really needs a new OT it's not gonna be cheap. You might want to consider getting a decent practice amp to play around with first, then doing this in stages.
Here is a blues JR that is $200 right now
They are decent sounding, and it is definitely cheaper than the cost of amp repairs.
check out thumbtack You can request what you want and the businesses will contact you. I found my photobooth by researching on yelp, but found my florist and make-up person on thumbtack.
I also advise against using groupon deals for photo booths. They get overwhelmed and often don't have the manpower to work all of the weddings they book. I've seen tons of negative reviews/experiences all from people who used groupon photobooth deals.
