Thanks for your question! The tech behind Brave search is based on many years of previous work at Cliqz, Tailcat and now, Brave. There is a blog post that is still relevant, it should be a very detailed introduction to our indexing techniques.
TLDR: We index a vast majority of the web worth visiting as people anonymously contribute good quality sites. This helps us filter out the noise, which is the biggest problem in search and machine learning in general. Our index is around 9 billion pages (and growing), only a small part of the Web, but a large part of the Web worth visiting. The traditional techniques used by Google/Bing are brute force and not cost-effective unless you are bigtech. We opted for this approach to bootstrap an independent index for web search. As we work towards increasing our independence, we will introduce more conventional crawling, which is needed for the long, long, long tail.
- Brave search is hosted on Amazon AWS so Amazon get your IP address, location, time
- DuckDuckGo is hosted on Microsoft Azure so Microsoft get your IP address, location, time
- Qwant has Huawei as major investor, which I don’t like personally. Hosted somewhere in France, but not sure
- Searx instances. Host your own instance you will stand out and won’t be good for privacy. Use someone else’s - could be ok, could be a hacker. There are breakdowns on instances but I would say you never really know who your are giving your data too
- MetaGer is hosted university of Hanover so they get your IP address, location, time
- Startpage i don’t know but was bought out by System1 which is an undesirable company
So you have to pick the lesser of evils really. Who knows what metadata these companies can also derive, but there is for sure leakage.
If you are just an average user like me trying to get away from sleazy ad companies I would say Brave if you don’t like DDG. They collect anonymous metrics though link
You will drive yourself crazy trying to find something that doesn’t have some sort of problem. There is no total privacy on the web. Just try to to find a good balance of what meets needs.
Yeah, if Jennifer Granick say to be worried ...... be worried. There's two creepy things here.
First, the government over-reach that was supposed to stay sealed is real bad. For decades, through all administrations, various orgs will push the boundaries of pulling data on citizens, but this is a new tack. Previously, the warrants would look like 'For this Google account, give us all the info (including what they searched)' and it's quietly morphed into 'Give us all the accounts and IP addresses who searched on this name.'
It's a fishing expedition. They are doing the same thing with GPS, demanding info on all users within a certain area at a time a crime as committed. Super creepy.
Second, and to your point, the fact Google, Microsoft and Yahoo HAS all this to give is starting to get more mainstream attention. Good.

I use duckduckgo and I love it. It also has a cool feature called bangs through which you can directly search on other websites. For example, if you can't find the answer on ddg, just add a !g at the beginning or the end of the query, this will search it on Google. Search !bangs on ddg.

You might also look at Brave's new search engine. They bought a smaller one and started tweaking it. I still use DDG all the time, but it based on Bing Seatch.

A lot of the big ones I can think of are in the finance/banking industries. Some of the ones that come immediately to mind are: -JP Morgan partnering with Alipay. Some are speculating that Alibaba will try to become the dominate online retail payment processor. -The SEC would allow Chinese stocks into US stock markets without them being transparent about their finances by simply claiming “state secrets” -If you do investing with firms such as Charles Schwab or others, they try to influence you to buy Chinese stocks or ETFs that are full of Chinese stocks.
I know they also have a lot of influence in the university systems as well. -Several years ago, I remember it was a huge controversy with my state that they changed the rules to admit more foreign students (mostly Chinese) to the state university because they pay higher tuition fees. -There have been documented cases to researchers and professors providing information to the Chinese government.
The big one that comes to mind is that they’re allies with a lot of our enemy countries, like North Korea and Iran but it’s still totally acceptable that our businesses send them money by the boat loads.
I’m sure there are others but they’re just not coming to mind.
Brave Browser just released their new privacy-heavy search engine, built with its own web index (ie not using Google on the backend) https://search.brave.com
idk how good it is though, only found out about it last night.

- Right-Click on the address box. (If you have search box enabled, then in that case it might be the search box)
- Now there shall be an option to add it as search engine. DO IT!
- Go to search engine settings to set it as default.
Edit: if this doesn't work, then open a search result page instead of homepage and try it.

Brave is only using Google and Bing for a small subset of queries where we do not have enough confidence (see our independence score in the "burger menu").

Even better: Brave Browser just released a beta of a search engine (not built on Bing like DuckDuckGo is) that is supposed to be even more private than DDG and by my first impression already has better results than DDG. search.brave.com if you want to try it out.
Just to clarify, when you get a list of businesses, the map should already be clickable to show a full-page map with all the places (e.g. https://search.brave.com/search?q=restaurants+sf). When we show a single business as an infobox, we do not allow to click the map (yet). This is something we are planning for future updates once we figure out the best UX and map integration.

But it's still brave, be aware of what they do.
Has to be brackish. You'd want to learn the salinity of the tank you buy from, and match that to start. Instant Ocean is readily available to add to distilled/RO water to achieve 1.01 specific gravity. Need a refrectometer or hydrometer. The former needs calibration via fluid and uses only a few drops of water. The latter needs a larger quantity of mixed water.
A substrate with plenty of surface area for beneficial bacteria would be good if you aren't going to run a traditional filter, which isn't required given their tiny size/waste output for few. But sand is probably the most common substrate I've seen.
They need water top offs depending on evaporation, less frequent water changes than other shrimp, and may live up to 20 years so plan who is going to care for the colony when you're gone.

Firefox uses Google as their default search engine. Of course Brave recently released Brave Search to the public as a beta, so that will certainly become the default Brave search engine in the near future.
they changed it. https://search.brave.com/default if you open this with firefox it will show the old way that doesnt work anymore.
in the new firefox you need to right click the brave search URL and then click "add search engine"

I believe it is because search.brave.com is a link to brave search, I think what needs to go there is a string or something for example if you put ;b and you went to the top search bar and prefixed your search with ;b it would search it with brave search. Hope this helps!!

i asked my (former) google engineer friend for help explaining why the behavior you're seeing is happening, and this is what they came up with.
what's going on here is that for searches containing the phrases pedo, pedophile, and pedophilia, all reddit results are removed. try it yourself, search for pedo site:reddit.com and you won't get any results, but search for, say, pedo site:cnn.com, and you will get tons of results. this is probably because, as you'll find on independent indexes like https://search.brave.com, the results for pedophile site:reddit.com specifically aren't something that advertisers would like very much. one of these less savory results probably bubbled up to the top of the list one day and they removed it to avoid a bad news article.

In addition to what the other person says it takes 24-72 hours to get into ketosis so yes after you get into ketosis you will be shredding more body fat as your body moves off of carbs. You can stay in ketosis by eating less than 20 carbs at your next refeed. Much easier to glide between fasts with less transition/discomfort and more satiety.

There does seem to be a lot of empty space on desktop, but I don't think it's any more than on Google results pages. The fact that Brave results are on "cards" with a slightly different background colour to the page itself makes the empty space more obvious, I think, than on Google results pages where the backgrounds are all the same colour.
I would like to see country and safe search settings in https://search.brave.com/settings rather than as a cookie, or at least some option to let them persist through "Clear browsing data".

It's pretty easy to gather data on people's voting history. And did you know that companies, like Facebook for example, have detailed profiles on people who aren't even Facebook users? Big tech makes their money off collecting your data and creating profiles that allow them to tailor their marketing to you personally.

I've been a longtime DuckDuckGo user. I still find the search results to be more tailored to my keywords than Google, though lately I've been sensing that certain topics and keywords are becoming omitted. I'm given to think that's inadvertently a result of its web crawler being aggregated from other engines. My current work around is to also use the Brave Search.
If you just want to configure its properties, maybe using a VM like Gnome Box or VirtualBox with Windoze and using pass-trough with the device may work. There are some native options, but you will have to build it yourself:

There are multiple options in Safari that allow you to choose the search engine you wish to use. By default that’s Google. There are A LOT of people especially in r/privacy that prefer not to use Google and many use DuckDuckGo (DDG) which is an option. Brave Search is another really good one that isn’t an option, my question was does anyone know if it ever will be.

Honestly I still have google set as my default search even though I use Brave obviously. I've only tested the Brave Search. It seems to work well. Pretty similar to google from my limited experience so far. May be better, may be worse but I haven't personally tested it yet enough to have a true opinion unfortunately. Sorry this didn't really answer your question, but I'd like to hear the feedback about it as well.

I agree. Most of these tech companies are woke. Companies like DDG start out like Google, but once they get big they throw away any values they claimed to have. I just switched to search.brave.com The owner of brave was forced to resign from Mozilla a few years back due to his unpopular (on the left coast) political beliefs, so I trust him (for now) more than DDG.
