From my understanding you can turn an iPad into a second monitor (like what Duet Display does), and also use it as a drawing tablet instead of something like a Wacom Cintiq.
Best thing I’ve found is Duet
It turns your iPad into a 2nd monitor.
I’ve also got a company issued huge ass HP thing but the screen is shitty and it weighs as much as my laptop.
> Apple did it for a few years back in the early 2010s with Target Display mode on their iMacs via the mini-DisplayPort/thunderbolt port, but removed it when the 5K iMacs dropped :(
The iPad actually works as a 2nd display using Apple’s built in Sidecar.
In fact using 3rd party solution called Duet Display, you can used any iPad or Android tablet as 2nd display (wired) along side any Windows desktop/laptop.
I use duet to make it part of the extended display. I also set the iPad and monitor to match my macbook's retina resolution.
Turbo Boost Switcher lock my macbook in "turbo mode" so it can handle having 3 retina screens and Parallels VM all running at once.
Mac Fan Control prevents Macplosions.
I have seen some software options todo this - but not with hardware and so seamless. I have tried https://www.duetdisplay.com which is software based and its not as smooth as they claim but it definitely works. This is claiming to be very smooth.
I haven't used it, but I've heard people talk positively about using an iPad as a second display (with the app Duet Display).

Seems to meet literally all of your requirements.
Not sure what you're in school for but I specifically bought an iPad mini 2 to compliment my Macbook Pro as a very portable second monitor and it's been so useful to have that second real estate.
Download duet and make the most out of it!
You can already use any Android (and iPad) as 2nd display to Windows or Mac devices via Duet Display.
If you’re a Mac user- there’s the built in Sidecar than enables iPad to be connected both wired and wirelessly to your Mac.
Two workarounds I use in this situation are:
For those who are wondering how this works, it's Duet Display; an app sits on the iPhone, you download a thing from the site onto either the Mac or the PC you're hooking to, and you get a display on the side.
The clip that attaches the two together is a Mountie by Ten One.
Both of these components cost money: Duet is $15, the clip is $20 (which is a little excessive, granted, but it does the job well). I'm very happy with it so far, I've got screen real estate that I would otherwise need a desk and monitors to obtain.
You can also get Duet, which turns an iOS device into an external monitor via USB3. You can then enable the touchbar as part of the touchscreen on the ipad/iphone.
Right now, I have my ipad mini running as a monitor on a 2012 MBPr and it has the touchbar across the bottom.
not sure about android but you definitely can with an ipad - https://www.duetdisplay.com/
edit: seems they've updated this since i've last used it, works on android now as well so in theory would work with an android tablet too.
There's a built in function on the Tab S7/+ called "Second Screen"
There are also apps like Duet Display and SuperDisplay that do the same thing.
Duet Display is a more polished solution, but itisn’t cheap. If you’re just looking for a free solution then there’s Splashtop Wired XDisplay.
I have a very small PC with no monitor. Usually I connected it to the HDMI port on the hotel Tv but just for fun and to give it a try, good to know I can use the iPad as a monitor if I ever need to lol
Edit: the app https://www.duetdisplay.com
Something like Duet Display might work for you. A lot of chromebooks came with this for free as a perk. It'll let you use your android/chrome or ios device as an extra monitor to mirror or extend your display from your PC/Mac. And I believe it runs over local Wifi. So if you're running Netflix in one room on a computer, you can mirror that to a chromebox in another room. I believe it can be used with multiple devices too, but haven't tried myself.
Have you try Duet with the USB-C cable connected? Looks like it supports wired mode now. See: https://www.duetdisplay.com/help-center/which-cable-do-i-use-to-connect I've not tried that, but, in theory, USB-C cable should give you a better experience.
Speaking of Luna, its price has gone up since April 2021. :(
At that time I paid $80 USD for it, but now it's $120. It is a lot of money to spend on a tiny little dongle. However, at the end of the day, my $80 investment has helped me get my work done efficiently, so it has more than paid for itself after almost 6 months of using it.
As a matter of fact, I'm typing this in Firefox that's in the iPad screen and in Retina resolution. No lag. Moving the window and mouse cursor around looks and feels just like on the MBP's screen.
The iPad or Android tablet would work better with Windows device if you want to use your tablet as a 2nd screen with zero latency (wired) via Duet Display. Maybe it would be possible with Windows 11 but not currently in 10.
Well, depending on the age of the iPad, Sidecar might not work for you. Check the requirements listed in this article to see if your iPad is supported.
If your iPad isn't supported by Sidecar, try using Duet Display. It basically does the same thing as Sidecar, but supports older iPads. Here is the link to that, and the getting started link as well.
I'm not sure of any other substitutes to Duet, however.
Duet Display is a more polished solution, but itisn’t cheap. If you’re just looking for a free solution then there’s Splashtop Wired XDisplay.
https://www.splashtop.com/wiredxdisplay
Mind you, I tried it on my iPad Mini 2 (iOS 12.5.1) too, on both a laptop and desktop, but after 34 minutes, it simply disconnects. Then it needs to be replugged.
On the iPad Air 2 (iOS 14.4) no such problems at all.
So I think depending what OS you're running, it's a hit or miss.
I also bought Duet Display for this purpose, but it's actually worse.
I've contacted their support who replied:
"After further investigation with our development team, we have determined that there is a change in iOS 14 background processes management that is affecting Duet's performance while running for a moment, causing it to freeze or stop responding.
An update is being worked on by our development team, and we're working around the clock to have it available on the Apple App Store as soon as possible. For the time being, I'm afraid all we can do is beg for your patience while the update is released; we truly apologize for the inconvenience."
Though Duet Display seems to be working fine on iOS 12.5.1.
The prospects for a native Apple solution don't look favorable. But third-party solutions from Astropad/Luna, EasyCanvas, and such could be viable alternatives.
It's an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil. Exactly which gen I can't say except it isn't the new one and looks to be a 12.9"
Edit: They can be used as a tablet on computer aswell using the Astropad app and a dual monitor using either Duet Display which is the mostly known dual display app for iPad or Luna Display, a pretty new kickstarted project from the creators of Astropad. Although this looks to be a native app on the iPad
If you are close enough to connect a USB cord to your computer you can play MTGA on an iOS device with zero lag using Duet Display.
I prefer this setup because it really helps prevent errant mouse clicks that can quickly cost you a game.
Several apps will do this:
Astropad - Mac only, and the best stylus features are only available in Astropad Studio, which is an expensive subscription.
Duet Pro - Works with Mac and Windows; requires subscription, iPad Pro only. The regular Duet (no subscription) can only make the iPad an external touch display without the Apple Pencil.
AirDisplay - the weakest of the three for this purpose
If you don't have an Apple Pencil (that is, if you have a lower level stylus) you probably don't need the subscription level features of Astropad Studio or Duet Pro. But if you do have an Apple Pencil, you must get the subscription to use the full Wacom-level capabilities of the Apple Pencil.
If a future person ends up here, everything worked until I installed Duet onto my computer again. I was using an old iPad as a second monitor, but apparently that makes DirectX freak out. Guess I won’t be using Duet anymore :/
I just did some research, is either go with Astropad or Duet Display
If you mean the limitations of iOS apps, you can get around them by using AstroPad and Duet Display, they will let you use the iPad as a drawing tablet and secondary screen for native Mac/Windows apps!
There is an app called Duet and that is what I use on the iPad. It basically turns your device into a external monitor. I then pop out the screen on XP11 that I want which is either the map or ATC and drag it onto my iPad. It is priced at 9.99 which is a bit cheaper than Remote Flight but with Duet, you are not restricted to what you can use on that screen so you could use any instrument or ATC or anything really. The website for Duet is here
Sounds like something like https://www.duetdisplay.com/ is more your speed. Personally, I bought a $100 USB-C Display on Amazon and went that route versus lugging my tablet around all the time.
I use an app called Duet Display to extend my screen in windows to my iPad. https://www.duetdisplay.com/ Works great! I only use the wired version and works both with USBC to USB or USB to USB. Some cords/computers do not charge, but on two of my laptops the device will charge while it’s plugged in as well.
I had the same question. Right now I use https://www.duetdisplay.com/ to connect my surface go as a 3rd wireless screen. If I didn't have the atem mini, I could also use any Surface as the MAIN device IF I wanted to draw.
When you make your Surface extend the desktop of your powerful computer, yes, the drawing input doesn't work well, but you could do it the other way around and have even a Surface Go as the main computer, and mirror your screen to a desktop for streaming purposes.
Since I have a Surface Go, I ended up using the Surface Go, Atem Mini, and Omen 16 with a 3070 as my main setup now. I returned the Macbook and SLS.
Sidecar is the only way to do it natively with macOS and iPadOS.
There may be some third-party products that will work with your older iPad. Check out Duet Display maybe?
Actually, the Lenovo android tablet with hdmi input.
https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/28/22458071/lenovo-yoga-pad-pro-android-tablet-external-monitor-hdmi
...
Else, PC tablet from any brand (dell, hp, asus, lenovo etc) with a usb hdmi video capture card. Simply start capture, full screen the live input.
..
Else, https://www.duetdisplay.com/ And similar software
For low latency wireless connection to a tablet as extended/mirrored display, the best is probably Luna Display. It only works with iPad as the 2nd tablet display to either Windows or Mac.
It’s pricey @$129 but you do get an adapter (USB or hdmi that goes into your PC) to ensure low latency (11ms) connection.
If you prefer using Android tablet- Duet Display which works with both Android and iPad as the 2nd display and Mac/PC as the main computer. It can still manage 60fps but the connection has a higher latency than Luna because it only uses Wifi.
I have used Duet Display to link an iPad to the Mac (like Sidecar).
It looks like it might support Mac to Mac now too although you may need to investigate this.
https://www.duetdisplay.com/help-center/about-duet
It's an app so will be cheaper.
I concur. Try Apple SideCar (Use your iPad as a second display for your Mac with Sidecar) if your equipment supports it or Duet (Duet website). Basically you set your iPad up as a secondary display. The other option is logging into Zoom as another client or co-host from your iPad.
Just tried it with Duet Desktop (https://www.duetdisplay.com/). I can use the duet as an extra monitor, but for me to use it with a stylus I need to use duet pro, which looks to be $29.99/year.
Just started a 1 week trial
it works but it's laggy. It may work better with a USB cable instead of over the network. I'll try that later
You mean like a Sidecar:
Use your iPad as a second display for your Mac with Sidecar - Apple Support
No.
If you have an Android or iPad, you can via 3rd party app called Duet. But it would work with Windows to Windows.
If you already have an ipad, one budget alternative for a touch-screen second screen would be to use Duet. Costs maybe $10 in the ios app store. Runs well on Windows machines. I've used it with my DAW and popped out the console onto the ipad screen for quick/easy access to make changes on the channel strips. Also used it as a multi-view display when running OBS. It's been pretty solid so far and the touch responds well.
Ενταξει το μειλ ειναι μια χαρα, και το word επισης οπως και το notes ή αλλες handwriting εφαρμογες που εχουν αλλα εξυπνα features που δουλευουν με το πεν. For whatever reason, Duet display will only work with Android or iPad as the 2nd display. It will work with Windows and Mac and it uses cable to connect to the tablets but with the Surface- it won’t work.
I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point MS will come up with its version of Sidecar. With Sidecar- the iPad will work Mac either as extended or mirrored mode. It will work wirelessly (PnP) or using cable.
There’s Miracast on Windows but compared to Sidecar which has pretty low latency even wirelessly- the difference in responsiveness or usability between the two is night and day.
Duet Display does exactly this using software that runs on both devices, and right now it’s free for Chromebook users. You will need to visit the Chrome Perks webpage using the Chromebook to claim it (you may also need to sign into the Chromebook using a personal Google account).
That’s not how DisplayLink works - it’s more like a USB video card. There being a Chromebook involved doesn’t change anything.
You can use software to extend a display to another device over the network. Duet Display is one such piece of software that also works with Chromebooks. You can actually claim it for free with some models via the Chromebook Perks program.
Hi. So a couple of things I missed first time. Duet only supports one iPad on PC or Mac (https://www.duetdisplay.com/help-center/does-duet-work-with-multiple-ipads) and the native iOS extend is only with a Mac. I play Prepar3d and have 2 apps which connect over WiFi, iFMS, to display the additional info so I no longer needed duet for that. For £90, I got a 13.1” HD monitor which sits under my main screen with my cougars perfectly Velcro’d to the front. Sorry for the confusion smh
Samsung will be adding a feature called "Second Screen" later this year that will let you use your Tab S7 as a wireless second display but I believe it will only work with Windows.
I use Duet to use my tablet as a second screen with my Mac and it works great. It's not free but totally worth the $9.99 I paid for it.
Some apps will give that message- usually when DRM is involved like Netflix, for example.
Not sure why you'd be getting an error like that but if you figure it out I would love to hear.
Another popular option, that is used more frequently between mobile device to laptop but can be used from pc to pc, is duet display.
You can use duetdisplay it’s works with windows 10 https://www.duetdisplay.com/help-center/does-duet-work-with-windows
Also this might help
What’s interesting is that the Lighting (and the USB -C) port on the iPad can also serve as a video input and will work with macOS via Sidecar or via 3rd party solution called Duet Display on Windows.
Try Duet Display. It’s supported on older devices and has always been smooth for me.
I’ve used it for years with a 2014 MacBook Pro and iPad Mini 2. Recently got the new iPad Pro 2020 and it works just as great.
Suggested upgrades:
For about $250-$300 she'll have a very quick machine for graphic design work. Mine is similarly equipped, and handles heavy workloads in Final Cut Pro X with ease.
Unfortunately, You cannot use an iMac as a secondary display. HOWEVER; If you have a tablet, you can get an app called "Duet Display". The desktop app is free but for android at least the app costs about $10, something I'd say is a pretty fair price to pay for this amazing app. All you need is a USB cable from your device to your laptop. You can check it out here.
Update to Catalina, but only works on certain newer iPads. For older iPads, spend $10 and use Duet Display. I'm about to do the latter now in fact.. :)
edit: err, and pay $20/year if you want it wirelessly..
Why yes :)
My favorite is Duet Display : https://www.duetdisplay.com/help-center/desktop-to-desktop-support (You'll have to subscribe to their premium "Air" product for desktop-desktop support) but it's a bit on the pricy side for apps and is a subscription model, but still beats buying a brand new external display and doubles up to convert your iPad to an optional travel display as well!
Does Duet Display (I could check it myself but in case OP is using the setup) allows the SP and MBP to work ala Sidecar. I know that it works if you’re running the iPad and Windows. If it does (Surface + Mac), does it work in both extended and mirror modes?
Pour les gens qui bossent de la maison sur un MacBook et pleurent des larmes de sang en devant bosser 8h sur 13 pouces : Duet! permet de transformer son iPad en deuxième écran !
Not that I disagree that subscriptions are annoying, but they revamped to the following:
-Wired connection: $9.99 (one time)
-Wireless connection: $19.99/year (~$1.60 per month?)
-wireless connection+Pencil support: $29.99/year (~$2.50 per month?)
https://www.duetdisplay.com/help-center/how-much-does-duet-cost
The main reason I have duet is because I have an old ipad3 (2012 model,30 pin connector) that doesn’t let me do anything else due to software restrictions for it. Duet works perfectly on it though so it’s the only reason I haven’t thrown it away.
I have never used it, but I think Duet Display does what you're seeking. Better still, the app is free as a perk of ChromeOS.
There’s Duet app but I think works only with iPad to PC.
There’s this: https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/turn-windows-10-pc-into-wirelss-display
But it might lack the responsiveness and you friend might not be able to get used to the lag (between what’s being drawn on the surface and the what began appearing on the other screen). Using newer CPU (when building the PC) can help reduce the lag/improve responsiveness (don’t use anything older than the 8th generation Intel).
What macOS are you running on the Mac Pro 5,1? Based on the card you mentioned, I’d guess Mojave or Catalina?
Is the graphics card third party (no boot screen?)
Catalina isn’t officially supported on this Mac model, so if you modified the installer to get it loaded, could also be a factor, in which case you could try dual booting Mojave and see if that works.
Nothing else, perhaps contact the vendor for support - they have a link to do so at the bottom of this page: https://www.duetdisplay.com/help-center/what-hardware-and-software-does-duet-support
Hope this helps!
It’s not going to be fun. You might as well just use the Surface itself. I’ve tried it with an iPad (to a desktop PC) using Duet and unless all you’re doing is mirroring and annotating documents on your desktop, the experience using a Photoshop, for example, is not worth the trouble.
The only instance where this type of implementation works is when it’s integrated into the OS like Sidecar is on Mac/iPadOS but even Apple has to set a very specific system requirements: only Mac with 7th Gen Intel and newer and iPad than can run the latest version of iPadOS- for Sidecar to work properly. And it does work well enough even wirelessly.
Here’s my iPad Pro mirroring Photoshop CC 2020 running on my 2018 MacBook Pro:
https://i.imgur.com/3U9buMQ.mp4
What MS needs to accomplish before anything else at this point is fix the behaviour of the pen- make it more predictable and responsive.
I haven't tried it in a bit, but there is an app https://www.duetdisplay.com/ that will allow your windows computer to use your ipad as an external display. probably not as seamless as Mac, but is still useful
If you ever feel like you need another screen or to have a touch capable screen, you should look into duet. Been magical for me. Runs well even on my old ipad 2, so it should be flawless on your ipad.
This only works with Apple iOS devices and Windows/OSX computers, but is what you are looking for. I have used it, and the results were surprisingly good - very little lag.
A hack to get TouchBar functionality on an external device (sadly not the keyboard) is to use Duet Display. Plug in your iPad or iPhone and Duet creates an extended desktop in it, and includes TouchBar functionality. Not ideal but it works.
Here’s a couple examples of it getting video through the lightning port -
https://petapixel.com/2015/04/13/manfrottos-digital-director-turns-your-ipad-air-into-a-display-and-remote-for-your-dslr/ (this mentions being able to connect through lightning, haven’t been able to find anything else about that, mostly wireless)
I’d personally love to see someone (Elgato?) make something like this with an HDMI input. I’d imagine the iPad Pro can possibly handle it.
There also used to be a TV tuner thing made by Elgato that connects to the iPad 30 pin port.
I use my iPad as a second display with an app called Duet Display. You simply open the app and plug your iPad into your computer through USB. It works pretty well and is worth it if you already have an iPad. https://www.duetdisplay.com
Not natively. There are some utilities available if your jailbreak it, but they honestly don't work very well. Alternatively, if you use the iPad as an extended display for a computer using Duet it adds a very nice and responsive touch interface for a mouse-based desktop workflow.
