If you take the time to configure ePSXe correctly, you can play the Playstation disc on your computer, with the 3d models rendered in HD, and the original music.
You can also be a dirty pirate, download an iso, and skip the load times, which, personally, I'd recommend. But you do have the option of participating in the group hallucination that is intellectual property.
You can always link to emulators, they're just pieces of software. Console games/ROMs can be touchy:
Side A is mostly correct, but I (and many others) tend to ride closer to side B.

The Iso Zone has a copy. The ePSXe emulator runs it great for me, but you also need a copy of the PlayStation BIOS files and some graphics plugins to run it.
Running Digimon World you need the .ISO file. To run the ISO I suggest using ePSXe, as it's one of the best Playstation 1 emulators about. Link for the lazy As for using a Ps3 controller, just use the charging cable and plug it into your pc/laptop. you shall also need this This works as the six-axis driver, then it's just a case of setting the gamepad in the config menu on ePSXe and you're good to go. Need any help feel free to ask.
yeah and it was super slow on my PC at the time. For anyone interested in PSX emulation, check out epsxe@ http://www.epsxe.com/ You can play games vanilla, or set up some custom shaders to actually play the games better than the original PLaystation did!
According to this ePSXe FAQ, the interpreter core has not been functional since version 1.2.0 (14 years ago.) I doubt the program would corrupt itself... Maybe check your system logs in the Event Viewer, specifically looking for DEP (Data Execution Prevention) problems.
What? You don't have $579 laying around to buy it off amazon? Hee hee.
Emulator: http://www.epsxe.com/download.php
Rom: http://www.emuparadise.me/Sony_Playstation_ISOs/Suikoden_II_[NTSC-U]/37636
I'm fairly sure ePSXe can load ISOs without mounting.
Edited with source: Q: For VGS, I used Daemon Tools to play ISOs, What should I use for ePSXe? A: Nothing like that. ePSXe comes with a built in "Run ISO" function, which easily allows you to run a .bin (CDRWin format), or .iso file from your HDD! But, Daemon Tools can have a higher compatibility rate, so you may want to still try it.
epsxe is the arguably the best one out there: http://www.epsxe.com/
Some of my favorite games were: Einhander, Star Wars Jedi Power Battles, Jet Moto 2, Gran Turismo 3, Final Fantasy IX, Legend of Dragoon.
Idk how good your computer is, but I've heard it through the grapevine that ePSXe works very well even on mediocre computers, as does PCSX2; I've... heard of other people using those emulators for TRS and Berwick respectively. ePSXe does not require any BIOS; it's just plug-in-and-play. As for PCSX2, BIOS can be found very easily via a simple DuckDuckGo search. Setting up BIOS is easy; I'd argue that patching a JP rom is more involved than setting up BIOs for PCSX2.
Point 2 is valid though. Doing content creation for a living sounds like a real drag because of this; I'd much rather just do it as a side hobby and create content that I enjoy making, instead of being beholden to some mystical algorithm. You're in an unenviable position, but you do good work; keep it up.
If you're seriously getting warnings about ePSXe from AVG, you seem to have a major issue. Ask yourself this:
"Did I download it from the official website?"
If your answer is a no, download it from the official website over at http://www.epsxe.com/ .
If your answer is yes, something is screwed up on your computer, as AVG shouldn't be detecting any part of ePSXe as a virus. Try using a program such as Malwarebytes to see if there's any sort of malware AVG isn't picking up. Good luck!
Don't bother with either - get yourself an emulator and either an actual PSX copy of the game or an .iso and you're in business. It'll save you the hassle of dealing with memory cards and old hardware, plus it won't cost you a dime.
I recommend using a game pad of some sort as it really heightens the experience. You could either go with a 360 controller or a Logitech Dual Action, which you can pick up for about $10.
Your friend is right - it's a truly fantastic game, and although not my favourite, it's the one that hooked me on the series.
A Playstation emulator such as epsxe, a Playstation bios (legally provided by yourself), and then the game iso. Apply the appropriate patch to the iso and you should be good to go.
You can get the emulator from the epsxe site. Legally you have to provide your own bios from your own Playstation. I believe you can legally download the game iso's from various sites, or you can provide your own. You can get the patches from InsaneDifficulty or FFHacktics following /u/Firegod1385's links.
For PC go to http://www.epsxe.com/ or the Play store for Android(it has a small price tag but it's better than the free options). The rom is everywhere, a quick google will find a direct download but maybe a torrent would be more reliable.
Not promoting piracy here btw folks, I think we've probably all paid for this at least once.
http://www.epsxe.com - Emulator
You need to google the bios file "SCPH1001"
Then install the emulator afterwords
I use a 360 controller, it's easy to configure in the settings
The game - choose single archive
I use ePSXe. It's great. Just don't ask for any BIOS, you'll have to find those on your own.
Also, you can play PS1 games on a PS2 or download them through the PSN, oh wait, forget the latter.
I just installed ePSXe from here:
http://www.epsxe.com/download.php
and installed it on my Quest. I also installed my Diablo bin/cue on the Quest, then started ePSXe from Oculus TV. I am happy to report that the game plays fine using my bluetooth XBox controller.
You need to set a path to the .mcr file in the memcard folder. ^^
> There's a folder that says "games" and it's also empty.
Yes, when you download ePSXe there is a folder called "memcards" with an empty folder "games" in it.

When you open ePSXe, under Config - Memory Cards you should have the following settings:
1 memcards\epsxe000.mcr [x] Enable
2 memcards\epsxe001.mcr [x] Enable
Might want to try out the newest version of epsxe then. http://www.epsxe.com/download.php runs fine in 1080p resolution full screen & allows for some other features as well that can be useful for the emulation.
I have to get this out of the way, but first, get yourself a USB controller. It's no fun playing a console game on a laptop with keyboard controls. ;)
PlayStation emulators require a little bit of setup because they're mostly based on a "plugin" system, but once you have them set up, they work just fine.
I personally recommend using ePSXe because it's pretty straightforward to use once you know what you're doing, and it's compatible with most games and will run them smoothly. It will also play your PS1 discs right out of your CD drive. You will need to have a PlayStation 1 BIOS file, so google for that and you will find it.
Once you've downloaded everything, you will need to configure ePSXe. Go into the menu and select Config then Wizard Guide and follow the steps from there. If you need any specific instructions, I can help you out.
That sucks to hear. I've never had that problem, so I can't think of a way to fix it, other than to try different resolutions, or maybe try running the program as administrator.
Also, if you're using the latest version (2.0.5) of ePSXe, you could try using an older version like 1.9.25. Here's the download page with the older versions.
You're running the latest 2.0.5?
Try running as Administrator; right click > run as admin...
Make sure ePSXe is not located anywhere under the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folders, usually in the root of the C:\ drive or somewhere under your User folders.
Again just double checking your Video Card drivers are up-to-date? Only use stable drivers for now: NVIDIA | AMD
In the latest version you can show the Console Output, which might show you what's causing the crash:
I find it surprising that your macbook, albeit old, cannot handle ps1 emulation. I ran flawless ps1 emulation on an old imac, I mean the really old ones with g3 processors. Hell my android phone can run ps1 games at full speed with no issues.
I haven't dabbled in macs in a long time, but the problem may be the availability of quality emulators for the version of Mac OS you are on. Here's one consideration, that may take a lot of work to find out if it will work. Dual boot (or run from a flash drive) with a Linux distro and run epsxe, which apparently runs on everything but osx and ios. I have run epsxe on some absolute shit computers. I would be pretty shocked to find your issue is the capability of your hardware.
For Linux distros to try, try Mint with Mate desktop. It runs very light and and run from a flash drive just fine.
Could try ePSXe 1.9.25: > - New experimental dmachaincore that maybe can fix some graphic glitches in some games like Tomb Raider Chronicles or Metal Gear Solid. Usage execute epsxe.exe -dmachaincore
First of all, ePSXe is a better emulator. It's specifically designed for PS1 games and can run on any machine (as well as Android/iOS devices)
Secondly, after setting up ePSXe (I can help if you want, infact, here's the BIOS and Plugins for you), you can "tweak" graphics by going to "Config" "Video" then "Configure".
Then on the window that pops up, select "Nice" (as fast is designed for lower end machines)
Then click OK then play Spyro 2.
Remember though, if playing on the highest resolution, it will look like crap as no PS1 game is HD.
As for custom textures? Well, there's a tool called SpyroEdit, but at the moment, only accepts the "same" textures as the game.
I would recommend switching to Epsxe and trying to see if you can use any of these drivers from http://www.pbernert.com/html/gpu.htm#OGL2
Link to Epsxe: http://www.epsxe.com/download.php
I don't know of any guides and from personal experience, everyone's computers are different when it comes to setting up an emulator. My settings with one of Pete's OpenGL plugins crashed my sister's and friend's games. You are going to have to tinker around until you make it stable.
I also recommend finding a good sound driver because the audio gets glitchy sometime.
PS - Sometimes you will see gems through the ground because they are being rendered on the wrong layer. I have no idea how to fix this but it doesn't affect game play at all.
I have no idea if people here recommend this site or not, but when I became interested in emulators (long before I discovered this subreddit) I found this site: http://www.fantasyanime.com/emuhelp/ I knew absolutely nothing about how to find or set-up an emulator, especially since you need plug-ins and BIOS files and all kinds of things that I didn't understand. The site explained everything and I didn't get any viruses.
Here is the link to ePSXe's website, also: http://www.epsxe.com/download.php I wouldn't think you would get any viruses there, either.
The only emulator for PS1 that I use is ePSXe and the only game that doesn't work on it for me is Metal Gear Solid, so I can't suggest any others since I've never used any others.
As far as viruses go on CoolRom. They have two download links. One for their own downloader, which always gets blocked by my virus scanner whenever I accidentally click on it and then a second download link under that that lets you manually DL the file if you'll agree to watch an ad. Make sure you're not clicking on the bigger DL link that says something about using the faster downloader program. Picture of what I mean: http://imgur.com/2pmmzZf
Okay, here's my step-by-step directions. They are not complicated. I was just thorough.
Download and unzip ePSXe
Download a PS1 BIOS. (google is your friend.)
Put Bios file in Bios folder, use Config settings to tell the emulator that.
Configure controller settings. You can use a keyboard, I had success with a logitech controller, AND a SNES controller. Yeah, that's right. Playing a PS1 game on a PC with a SNES controller. That's how I roll.
Download a Monster Rancher ROM. But you have to be careful, some sites are shady. Don't use their downloaders.
Unzip the game file, but the .cue and .bin in the ISO folder within the emulator.
Configure the CD rom options - tell it to use your computer's CD rom.
Put a CD or DVD in your CD drive.
In the emulator, got to FILE > Run ISO, and select your monster rancher. Use the .Cue file YAY! NOSTALGIA. (My god, the pixels!)(and screen tearing)
WHen you get to the point where you can go to the shrine, do it!
When it says to remove the MOnster Rancher 2 disk and insert a CD, press escape. You should see the ePSXe window. Go to FILE>Change Disk> CDROM or ISO. If you use ISO, again, use the .cue files. I downloaded a bunch of PS1 games to generate monster with. After a couple of seconds, it should automatically re-fullscreen your game and give you the 'reading the disk' dialogue. I find that if I changed to a CD rom, it takes the program a few more seconds to re-load my monster rancher.
When it tells you to re-load the monster rancher disk, press escape again, go to FILE>Change Disk>ISO and re-select your Monster Rancher. Again, it will re-load the game for you.
PROFIT.
Why do DVDs work? The PS1 didn't know DVDs were a thing, and thus, didn't know how to read them. But of course, our computers know how to read DVDs, so the game doesn't care. It just looks for a table of contents, and DVDs have those.
HAVE FUN.
OK. It looks like there's a remastered version of FF1 and FF2 for Playstation. The best Playstation emulator that I know of is ePSXe and I personally use emuparadise for ROMs: here is an ISO of Final Fantasy Origins.
Next, it looks like the best version of FF3 is going to be on PSP, for which you want PPSSPP. For FF4-9, you're back to Playstation, then PS2 and PCSX2 for 10-12, at which point you have to get the Windows versions or wait until RPCS3 is playable (probably several years in the future).
Yes, although it was just called PCSX. Actually, there have been multiple PS1 emulators around, but ePSXe and PCSX-Reloaded are the only ones in active development, I think.
OldSchoolRPGs has the gist of it — (s)he oughta! — Playstation emulation is more involved than Nintendo consoles. You need a binary file of the Playstation BIOS for one, which is illegal to possess unless you own the console, as I understand it. And there are other things, like choosing and configuring plugins.
It's not too difficult to get things running reasonably well, though. The worst I've seen are some minor artifacts. Still, if you only want to play a few games and they have PC versions, best listen to OSRPGs.
That said, don't be too intimidated by Playstation emulation! It's not the kind of thing that'll keep you up at night wondering what you could be doing wrong.
Just download an emulator, like ePSXe and then buy a used copy of the PS1 game from eBay or your local game store.
It's not pirating, since you own the game, and it will play great.
I do this with SH1 and my European copy of SH2.
Then, if you buy a PS3 controller you can use the USB cable to connect to your computer and then you're golden! Just install MotionInJoy and you're all set!
Mega-Drive: Gens
The best mega drive/genesis emulator in the business in my opinion. Plays games in zip files, use the last of the video filters for the best looking screen.
PS1: ePSXe
I've found this to be quite good after I figured how to set it up. The Bios file needs to be downloaded separately as far as I remember, there are youtube vids showing how this is done. It works perfectly with my arcade stick and my wired xbox pad too which is a plus.
Best PS1 emulator for compatibility and easy use: Psx 1.13 -> http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/psx/psx_em.html
Best PS1 emulator for multiplayer and gfx upscaling: epsxe -> http://www.epsxe.com/
First you need a PS1 emulator. ePSXe is pretty much the best one. It allows you to play PS1 games on your PC by emulating the PS1 hardware. To get it running you will need a PS1 bios. You can rip it from your PS1 by yourself if you have the right hardware, or you can download it from the internet. Due to the fact that that isn't really legal, I'm not going to link to a PS1 bios. Download or rip a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics (also illegal, not going to link to it), and download the patch.
From there I'm not really sure what you need to do since I have never used patches with ePSXe, but I think you need to put the patch (the ppf file) in the /patches directory in your ePSXe install, and possibly rename it to the same name as your Final Fantasy Tactics ISO.
> Am I missing something?
Yes, DuckStation.
If you still prefer trying out ePSXe, here is the direct Windows link, just click it.
My "before you play" suggestion is to emulate on something other than ePSXe. It's a dead emulator as they are pretty much focused on their paid version for mobile. See for yourself as it hasn't been updated since 2016: http://www.epsxe.com/index.php
If you aren't comfortable with setting up something like Mednafen because of the CLI involved, there is a stand alone emulator called PCSX-R that I have used and recommend. It's available for windows and linux.
Obviously, use what you have available, but ePSXe still has plugin issues with a large portion of the PS1 library, for example DQVII won't boot past the loading screen, but has zero issues on PCSX-R.
Read about it on the emulation wiki from r/emulation: http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/PCSX-Reloaded
PCSX-R site: https://archive.codeplex.com/?p=pcsxr
Enjoy Xenogears. It's one of those of those games that I wish I could experience again with no memory for the first time.
Buy a PS1 (from online, thrift store, anywhere) or download a PS1 Emulator for your PC from the internet (i played the first PE on an emulator).
http://www.epsxe.com/download.php
there's one for linux
Epsxe is pretty much the standard as you can see by the other responses; even a laptop should be able to run it reasonably well.
It's not as easy as some other systems' emulators, it's based on plugins which may need some setup. Further, you will need a copy of a ps1 BIOS dump(don't ask for this file, sharing it is copyright infringement.)
You need three things to properly emulate a PlayStation on your computer or mobile device: an emulator, a PlayStation BIOS file, and a ROM.
http://www.epsxe.com/ is a really stable one that still works on windows 10
the help page has all further info
These are my ePSXe video settings. Should just have to change the fullscreen res to your monitor's. Mine is adjusted for my TV. Make sure you have the latest ePSXe. Adjusting the internal PS1 resolution can cause performance issues but you shouldn't really need to bump that up past double for it to look good.
Almost anything will do PS1. System requirements here.
There's no working PS2 emulator yet for Android, and no tablet on the market is powerful enough for full speed PS2 emulation in any case.
There's a new version of ePSXe out, you should give that one a try.
I don't know specifically what error message you're referring to, but with ePSXe, you shouldn't launch the .bin file, but the .cue file instead.
I'm not entirely following what exactly it is you want - something that can create shortcuts to emulators so that you don't need to load roms manually?
Based on my understanding, it sounds like you either want a frontend or just straight up shortcuts with command line switches. The latter of which can be found here, ctrl+f for "-adsrtrick" (without quotes) and there's a mostly complete list of commandline switches you can use in shortcuts.
Ever heard of emulators? You can play most oldskool games on Mac/PC that way. For PSx, use ePSXe. You can usually set the resolution of the console higher as well (since it runs on your PC) making the games slightly prettier :)
I mainly used this guide to set it up. I had the biggest problem with the sound drivers, but you can pretty much get it running with that guide.
I'm not an expert though and this was also my first try at playstation emulation so there might be some better guides out there.
I just remembered -- if you intend to play this on your phone, make sure you grab this plugin and drop it into your plugins folder. Enable it by choosing OpenGL Plugin for your GPU option.
If you don't mind emulators then music 2000 would fit your list perfectly.

BIOS to make emu work https://kat.cr/ps1-emulator-epsxe-v1-9-25-updated-with-all-plug-ins-t10225579.html#comment
I'm starting to sound like a broken record about this but.. there is a newer version than 1.9.0.
Not that Id say it would magically fix it, I don't believe this is a problem with ePSXe directly as others have played it fine even under 1.9.0.
Now when you say you lose controller input is that just the keys mapped to the controller in-game or an actual controller you are trying to use?
I recommend Epsxe at http://www.epsxe.com/ . It is what I used when recording two let's plays of the second and third Spyro games. I had to tinker around with some of Pete's OpenGL plugins because the default plugins broke parts of the game on my machine XD.
Oh seriously though, make sure you have a physical copy of the third game. It is unbeatable if you have a pirated version unless it was ripped perfectly to bypass a deliberate thing put on the disk to make the game realize it was copied which I have no idea if such a thing exists.
PSX is very good as is ePSXe.
So now to the legal discussion; Even if you own the game, downloading a ROM is technically illegal as you are operating on a license intended for someone else.
If you want to stay legal, you can try your Spyro disc with the emulator, you can put the disc into your PC and an emulator can read it.
You also need a BIOS image for the PS1, again to stay legal you need hardware to dump this.
I'm not sure this subreddit approves of discussing piracy methods, so this is the most that should be said for you.
Here's ePSXe: http://www.epsxe.com/download.php
please consult the emuation wiki that I linked in the topic.
me personally, I'd just use epsxe if you don't want to put up with any hassle although there are better ps1 emulators and epsxe is closed source and hasn't been updated in a year. still works well though.
You would need a PS1 emulator, I would recommend epsxe; it's pretty easy to set up. I tried playing RE2 with a keyboard and it was pretty hard, so yeah, I would think that you would need a controller. A friend of mine thinks he could manage to play Legend of Zelda: OoT with a mouse and keyboard though, so I guess it just depends on how skilled you are at playing certain games with a keyboard :/ There are people who run Silent Hill on PC with just a keyboard and they are very competent players. Resident Evil is really hard with a keyboard because aiming requires you to move along the y-axis (this is not the case in Silent Hill), and I found that to be pretty challenging. If you practiced enough you might be able to overcome it though.
Their windows emulator is still pretty good. I'd suggest finding a pack with all of the plugins.
You should definitely be able to run it, considering I could play it with integrated graphics on my 2 year old i3 laptop
Thought I'd make a second comment so you'd get a notification. The Emulator that I have used previously is http://www.epsxe.com/
And I usually get all my roms from Romulation (Make yourself a free account and you're good to go!) : http://www.romulation.net/downloads/search/PSX/digimon/
G'damn I miss those wonderful days of Digimon instead of homework! Might take it for a spin once again..
Using an emulator is 100% legal. It's only illegal if you were to download the game. If you buy the ps1 game somewhere you can just put it in your computer load it up in the emulator. Try http://www.epsxe.com/ or http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/psx/psx_em.html
Thats the official site, go take a look there.
EDIT: Did I quick search for the Android port, looks like the official way through google play will cost ya. Unless your willing to pirate it, its a small price to pay. That or just use your PC if it can handle it.
I used ePSXe to play PS1 games on the computer for ages. You may have to tinker around a bit with the video, sound, and CD settings, but once you find something that works, well, it just works. You will have to find a BIOS file elsewhere, though. It's a PS1 emulator that's been around for a very long time.
You will need an emulator (http://www.epsxe.com) and you will also need the Playstation BIOS. The BIOS can be obtained legally from a Playstation (tutorial), or illegally from P2P.
I once got pissed at my brother and deleted his harvest moon save. It still keeps me up at night. You should really check out this emulator though if you haven't yet. Bring back the memories.
For MGS I recomend ePSXe. and Pete's plugins for said emulator. Can be a bit of a pain to configure all the different plugins, but the custom shaders make your old PS1 games look awesome.
edit - Also. Invest in a USB gamepad if you don't already have one.
[edit: compatibility thread says FFT runs 100% perfectly.]
