Lots of sci fi shows and movies do this. This Joystick throttle combo (HOTAS) or its Pro variant show up in so many lower budget sci fi movies and shows. Even some higher budget stuff like the Riddick movies. As I have one on my desk it yanks me out of the immersion all the time, but its still funny. I just watched the last Resident Evil movie and it showed up there too.
Obligatory The Churn recommendation. It's a novella focused on this character's backstory. It's all set well before the TV series and the full-length novels, so you can go into it having read nothing else.
Here are the specs. Brand: EMSA. 504843 City cup insulated drinking cup. 0.2 liters, translucent red. Currently unavailable on Amazon. I purchased one years ago and it’s still my favorite mug!

The roci's control stick is a CAD drawing input device. Pretty sure it's this one, but I'm not looking at a screen grab or anything.
Chris Hadfield is my favorite astronaut from recent times. I HIGHLY recommend his book An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth. It's one of my favorite reads from recent years.
The tackle was mostly vertical, so the vast majority of the force of impact would have been the result of gravity, of which Io apparently only has 0.183G, slightly more than our moon at 0.16G.
Bobby falls for 4.6 seconds in that clip, on Io falling for 4.6 seconds would cover a distance of 19 meters. At the moment you hit the surface you would be traveling at 8.26m/s (using https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/free-fall).
Being hit with a car at 20mph (8.94 m/s) yields a 90% survival rate for someone not wearing any sort of protection. Bobby's 8.26m/s translates to 18.47mph.
Bobby given the data we are shown would almost always survive that fall.
Basically the fall in the show is stylized to look more exciting and dangerous than it really would have been, the footage makes it look like far more than a 19 metre drop is taking place and that she is hitting at way more than 18.47mph.
I make no claims about Diogo surviving or not, but the clip from the show is not really proof that the armour can allow people to suffer huge fall damage, when a regular person without armour would stand a good chance of surviving the same fall conditions.
I think maybe they are a species of chanterelle, many of which are edible.

Amazon Product Description: The Earth's leaders have drawn a line in the interstellar sand--despite the fact that the fierce alien enemy they would oppose is inscrutable, unconquerable, and very far away. A reluctant conscript drafted into an elite Military unit, Private William Mandella has been propelled through space and time to fight in the distant thousand-year conflict; to perform his duties and do whatever it takes to survive the ordeal and return home. But "home" may be even more terrifying than battle, because, thanks to the time dilation caused by space travel, Mandella is aging months while the Earth he left behind is aging centuries...
So far, based on the Amazon listings for S3, the episodes have been 43.2 minutes long, on average. Over 13 episodes, that gives us less than 562 minutes long, total.
If S4 episodes are at least 56m12s long, then S4 will have more total runtime... and that's not even considering the difference between 13 sets of credits and 10 sets of credits, which would be included in this runtime.
Besides the good books others recommended, there's an interesting little text-based Android game called "Seedship." You play as an AI tasked with guiding a sleeper colony ship of humans to a new home. It is really hard to decide on a planet because something is wrong with literally every potential planet you find around every single star, and the longer you travel looking the more things go wrong on the ship as it (and you the AI) slowly decay/get damaged over time.
Once you do choose wisely/poorly a planet to settle on, you then guide the colonists in settling down given the resources, atmosphere, etc at hand and see how the colony ends up.... can get some pretty wild societies depending on how horrible of a planet you had to settle on because your ship was falling apart. :D
Pretty entertaining, IMO.
I was wondering which 'super automatic espresso machine' that was, found an old thread saying it was a Jura S9 (which are out of stock on Amazon but of course you can get the S8 for a mere $2700).
Anyway, figured I'd share here in case anyone's in the market to redesign their kitchen as a Martian Corvette class galley.

Here are few steps for non-US users to stream The Expanse, although they'd be still breaking the Amazon's T&C.
Step 1: Get an amazon.com account.
Step 2: Load balance through your credit or debit card - https://www.amazon.com/asv/reload/order?_encoding=UTF8&ref_=asv_gclp_bwd_pd
Step 3: Use a fake US address and set that as your default address.
Step 4: Buy the episodes & season pass - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018BZ3SCM/ref=nav_timeline_asin?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Now that you're done, you can watch the series without a VPN. Increase in digital sales, DVDs & Blu-rays are probably the only real ways to get Amazon on board. So do what you can.
Here is the preview on amazon
I don't know if there's another way?
This is available at amazon with prime shipping! Just found out and bought two. Need to paint one of them back in MCRN paint job once I get them.

Edit: lol out of stock now ... “No.1 best seller in spacecraft models” atm
That's very cool! I work on the show. You may notice that there's a significant difference between Belter language in the show and that in the book - that's because we hired a linguist fluent in something like 24 languages to create a consistent language with established grammatical structure for the show.
For more good background on the logistics of the adaptation process be sure to check out Andrew Liptak's fantastic and in-depth feature. And if you have other questions feel free to PM me - I'm attending the premiere in Santa Fe but I'll respond if I can!

Few weeks ago, /u/it-reaches-out made some stickers to recreate our favorite crew's mugs (see here). She was kind enough to send me a few here in France. I receveid it few days ago and here's the results.

Shameless plug, The High Frontier: Human Colonies in Space by Gerard K. O'Neill. It's available many places, but here it is on Amazon.
The book is sort of a spinoff of O'Neill's proposal to the blue sky research groups in NASA post-Apollo. His focus was how to achieve space colonization with the technology available in the 1970s, and to provide an economic rationalization to keep it going.
The product of such colonies was simple and quite achievable: orbital solar power beamed to earth in diffuse microwave beams (the most anyone walking under one such beam would be a few degrees elevated local temperatures, because the beam would be quite broad. Plus, the transmission efficiency was as good as long-distance power cables, a bit more than 80% efficient.).
The critical unsolved problem with his plan was the cost of spacecraft launches from Earth. He had hoped the Space Shuttle and its potential spin-offs would be cheap enough, but that was impossible. Fortunately, if SpaceX's BFR holds up to expectations, his plan's financial bounds will be met.
edit: fun fact - with 1970's engineering practices and materials, the largest habitat possible at the time had the same habitable internal surface area as the entirety of Switzerland. These days, our materials are at least good enough to create something the size of Texas, with the theoretical limits going up to the land area of Russia (Siberia included).
> ... what's up with three ... ?
My understanding is as follows. (I'm literally half-asleep right now, but I'm sure someone will correct any errors or omissions here.)
Currently, in the U.S., the third season remains available for purchase from Amazon.com (and other U.S. outlets e.g. iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, and the Microsoft store). — [Edit: Also in Canada from iTunes and Google Play, if I'm not mistaken.]
The first two seasons are available to U.S. Prime members at no extra charge, but not yet the third season. At some point during "winter", the third season should become available for U.S. Prime members (without requiring them to pay extra for it).
I'm not aware of any announcements about future availability to Prime members in various countries outside the U.S. — (Some recent reply-tweets from Prime Video support accounts have said they don't yet have any information to announce about that.)
For viewers outside the U.S., one current option for viewing Season 3 is to purchase the U.S. Blu-rays. According to some reports by users and a third-party reference source, those Blu-rays are region-free (even though Amazon lists them as Region A/1).
It was originally developed as an MMORPG, which never took off. Then Ty turned it in to a tabletop game game that he played with other sci-fi and fantasy writers in the area.
Im in the middle of making a game on the Expanse. It will be a combat sim that is similar to Command Air Naval Operations https://store.steampowered.com/app/321410/Command_Modern_Air__Naval_Operations_WOTY/. It will have the whole expanse solar system as we know it. I will keep people updated if you're interested.
~~We are not sure if Sling counts!~~ Edit: I had outdated information! This seems to be correct, just make sure you don't opt out!
Article here. Better to do YouTube TV or Hulu TV, we know they count.
In US it is in Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Microsoft Store, Vudu and others.
Very different to UK (and other non-US/CA/NZ countries) where it is not available at all.
This Archive.org snapshot from mid-May positively confirms
that the Amazon product page originally said "+ Digital HD with Ultraviolet":

I also work in the TV industry and I have to say subtitles is a lot harder than you think. If you think I'm wrong take the first 10 mins of any show that doesn't have a laugh track and try to type what everyone is saying. You also need to make sure you label who is speaking and between what time they speak.
Here is a website that you can practice with, but trust me it's WAY more time consuming you are making out to be.
Memrise baratna ;) https://www.memrise.com/course/1476694/lang-belta-belter-creole-phrasebook/ Loads of phrases. Also sub to r/langbelta theres some per episode analysis on there that helps. Honestly, i'd kill for a proper book on Lang Belta.

FYI, if your local B&N are being sketchy about it, show them this: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/blog/sci-fi-fantasy/read-a-preview-of-drive-a-prequel-story-to-the-expanse-available-exclusively-at-barnes-noble/
Mine had no idea what I was talking about until I showed that link to them, and then they dug into the computer to find that they weren't scheduled to get the delivery until later in the month. I have to wait until the 24th here.
But make sure your local B&N people are told about it, otherwise they seem to have no clue.
There is also the much cheaper international subscription ($2.99/mo for 6 months, $5.99/mo afterwards) to Prime Video via www.primevideo.com.
The international site also has more content, including non-Original titles, than is available via the Amazon US site to international visitors without VPN.
The whole underlying theme of the show is if humans can get their shit together to face an existential threat.
(Also, maybe you don’t understand what a theme is? https://www.masterclass.com/articles/the-complete-guide-to-narrative-theme-in-literature-definition-examples-and-writing-how-to
The protomolecule is just a plot device to show how humans really can’t work together even when their very existence depends on it. And how tragically, painfully understandable it all is.
Seasons 4 and 5 are about how humanity’s greed will leave the Belters even worse off than they are now — and the revolution that ensues when the poorest people feel they have no hope of survival. It’s a very clever way to tell the story of how humans have behaved for millennia (and appears will continue to act.)
I always thought bosmang was creole for boss man, used to refer to the leader/captain. Diogo uses it when talking to Ashford for example.

<strong>Limit</strong> (amazon) >In 2025, entrepreneur Julian Orley opens the first-ever hotel on the moon. But Orley Enterprises deals in more than space tourism--it also operates the world's only space elevator, which in addition to allowing the very wealthy to play tennis on the lunar surface connects Earth with the moon and enables the transportation of helium-3, the fuel of the future, back to the planet. Julian has invited twenty-one of the world's richest and most powerful individuals to sample his brand-new lunar accommodation, hoping to secure the finances for a second elevator.
Was a nice read. Naturally space colonization has not evolved as far as in The Expanse but you get the evil master plan, James Bond like terrorist/assassins and mercenaries and a lot of suspense. It has 960 pages and I made it through in 3 days.
It has more a James Bond: Moonraker feel to it.
I'm all for physical sales, I still collect tons of movie and shows on DVD and Blu Ray, but this just seems to be some random twitter account with a url shortener that hides the fact the amazon link has an affiliate code. Another "free" option:
If you start a 30-day free trial of Amazon Music Unlimited
(or of course if you already subscribe), you can listen here:
S2 — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V6TDL8L/
S3 — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V8NH1KH/
If you want to help save it and you're in the US and you can watch it live via YouTube TV, Hulu Live or Direct TV Now but Direct TV NOW's service is at best unreliable IMO. Sadly these are the only way to directly support SyFy. YouTube TV has a free 7 day trial: https://tv.youtube.com/welcome/
After that or if you're not in the US - You can buy it via Amazon with u/evil-prince 's method.
Lastly you can buy it via iTunes or Google Play but it has much less of an effect.
E.g. any VISA Debit and Mastercard Debit cards also work fine, no need for a credit card. Not sure if those are common in Netherlands, though (here in Finland all debit cards are VISA or Mastercard).
The international Prime Video site is www.primevideo.com. It should show the cost on the front page (for Netherlands, €2.99/mo for first 6 months, €5.99/mo after that).
Wow, thank you for being open-minded with your question. We were happy to answer, and genuinely glad to have you in the community - you wouldn't have been downvoted into oblivion in /r/LangBelta. Do you have Twitter? If not get twitter and make sure your account is public (is by default). Tweet @JeffBezos, @AmazonStudios, @Netflix, and other people as mentioned in the megathread. Use hashtag #SaveTheExpanse. Follow the cast and crew. Retweet stuff with #SaveTheExpanse. Do this a lot- more the hashtag is used the better.
Buzz about it on social media. Get your friends to sign the petition and do the above actions.
You can buy season 3 here from Amazon US, they ship anywhere in Europe and the The Expanse US blu-rays are all region-free (despite what Amazon says).
AFAIK, Prime international release dates have not yet been announced.
One option is to buy the US Blu-rays from Amazon.com.
(Although Amazon labels them as "Region A/1", some reports say they are region-free.)

True. Those games are a favorite of my childhood, epic as hell.
However for something Expanse-like, I recommend Jupiter: The Nexus Incident. It was recently remastered, and starts out in a similar type of solar-system-only sci-fi setting featuring real-time Newtonian space combat between ships that will switch between a primary drive/braking emgines and combat maneuvering thrusters as they burn between points in space and then flip and spin to present firing arcs and protect damaged components. It was a masterpiece that was poorly marketed and largely overlooked.

If you are into videogames at all, try DEFCON for a bit (there should be demos available) the graphics are simple and as cold as the goal: Inflict casualties on them and prevent them on yourself. Highest score wins the match.
Melba uses a Saitek X-55 to pilot the Seung Un
Cowboy Bebop didn't do it for me. Not that it was bad, but it didn't live up to the expectations as I heard it was extremely good, but ended up being just ok, at least for me.
This one on the other hand, Space Adventure Cobra - https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1091, I could rewatch (and already did).
edit: typos.
If you want something keychain sized then you'll need to grab one of the existing models (I'd recommend the less detailed SyFy one) and scale it down. You'll also need to merge it into one part and remove any details which become too small (<1mm dimension) after the scaling. You could do it in an hour or two in TinkerCAD.
You might keep watching TuneFind, but I don't think anyone's found anything significant yet. Many of us are wondering too, though - the music in the last episode was so good.
No VPN needed. The Expanse is on Prime Video worldwide except for U.S. sanctioned regions, mainland China, and New Zealand.
Countries without a local Amazon site need to use the international Prime Video site (which is poorly advertised by Amazon).
> ... using a VPN ...
(FWIW, just to state the obvious, using a VPN for that purpose would conflict with probably every legal US streaming platform's terms-of-use. For example Amazon's video ToU says "...you may not use any technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location.")
Oh, io9 just linked a list of all the notables coming and going for the US Netflix - no Expanse, since they don't run it.

Here's the Amazon product page for the brownie pan..
$35 USD hrm
Maybe one brownie tray per person?

Weird... This is the one that comes up through search for me: https://www.audible.com/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/Leviathan-Wakes-Audiobook/B00P9XDQFY
Has every indication of being available in the US (shown on Audible.com, price in USD, separate section for .com and .co.uk reviews, buy button for my credit or with money)... but then it just doesn't work.
If I try to buy via Amazon (link) I get an error saying "I already tried to order this title" (no shit), and that I should wait ten minutes for the book to appear, or try again later. Has been happening since Saturday...
EDIT: re your edit: yeah, that's the amazon link I mentioned. So that's the one that tells me I already tried to buy it..
Hey OP, pro tip: you can order the paperback Persepolis off the German amazon store right now (and preorder Tiamat for delivery in December while you’re at it)
It's how I've been reading the books with everyone else since I refuse to change format halfway through a series and the books started in paperback. You'll get Tiamat around mid-December to early January, which isn't quite inline with the US hardcover release, but it's still much better than waiting till the next November.
Did you buy the one off amazon and screenprint the MCRN logo on it?
I've had my eye on it for awhile, and it has decreased in price steadily, but it's still a little rich for my blood.
Edit: Behold, the 30 dollar coffee cup.
In the U.S., Amazon/Audible's current trial promo gives "2 free audiobooks" according to what I see in the sidebar notes on this page:
https://www.amazon.com/Leviathan-Wakes/dp/B073HBQXMT/
If you decide to go for that, save a screenshot of that page as evidence for complaint in case they fail to give you the 2nd free book. ~~(I'd be cautious because another page said they only give one book free.)~~ [Edit]: The 2-book deal is apparently a limited-time "holiday offer".
(Oops, for clarity my thread title should've said "Amazon's US TV bestsellers".)
...
FWIW, the US Blu-rays are reportedly "region-free" (even though Amazon lists them as region A/1) ... so if you have a player, and if you can order an import (either from the Amazon site nearest you, if they offer it, or else by international order from Amazon.com), that may be one option to consider.
"The Art And Making Of The Expanse" has some good ship stuff
~~You can subscribe to Amazon Prime (has 1 month free trial, 6 months if you're a student)~~ ~~Then you need to subscribe to a VPN. (ExpressVPN and NordVPN works with Amazon/Netflix etc.)~~
~~Connect to a US Server and watch it on Amazon.~~
You can create an account and buy the episodes there.

Aside from the resources Oaktown Pirate posted, /r/LangBelta and /r/TheExpanse co-moderator /u/it-reaches-out built a quick lookup tool that's really handy: quickref.langbelta.org/. There's also a Memrise course that she and I collaborated on, but that's more a phrasebook, aimed at Inners who are visiting or moving to the Belt, not a dictionary.
download it from any abandonware page, here's one option:
http://www.old-games.com/download/1456/mission-critical
there are some version that don't have the cutscene movies with live action, they aren't terribly crucial to the games story but its a nice touch, also some famous guy from star trek played a role in them
This shit is fucking lit for writing anything really. It's not even hard or anything, just requires some reading like this
~~I mean look at this fancy ass markup who needs LateX right?~~
Markdown is awesome
And so are you
Fuck yeah Expanse is renewed!
Pandoc can be used to convert a normal text file on your computer to a proper pdf if you use markdown.
It's fairly simple to strip the drm from ebooks with Calibre and the DeDRM plugin.
Yeah the YouTube videos can really help. If you're looking at doing any kind of human figure modeling check out MakeHuman, it's a lot easier to generate a figure that you can then import into Blender
I was travelling for work when the series first aired, so I DL'ed it from here:
http://www.vudu.com/movies/#!content/729207/The-Expanse-Season-1
I agree that it really deserves the exposure it would enjoy on netflix streaming. (you can get the dvd's from netflix if you have that service)
Watching the first season got me to buy all the books and now I'm waiting for season 2. (and the announcement for seasons 3+)
Of course it helps, unless you opt out.
https://www.sling.com/privacy/opt-out
I didnt realize Syfy would reair this weeks episode. And wasnt positive if they would take viewers of reaired episodes into consideration. Typically I would watch using Sling but not live, as they have several Syfy shows and movies available on demand. Just the current season of the Expanse. There are still commercials, more limited but pretty much only Syfy promos. So I'm not sure if that helps.
But for the foreseeable future Ill have Syfy on at least one of my tv's anytime they air the Expanse. They should do like AMC air the current show several times a week. And a current season marathon before new episodes. And a weekend marathon.
I found this track listing site but it has no music for the final two episodes. http://www.tunefind.com/show/the-expanse/season-1

Are you sure? While Amazon Prime (which is more than just the streaming service) isn't everywhere, Prime Video (just the streaming) is AFAIK available in almost every country with very few rare exceptions.
Edit: Wiki says "Prime Video is available worldwide (except for Mainland China, Iran, North Korea, and Syria)." Are you in one of those four countries?

... realizing of course that it's a breach of their terms-of-use. ("You may not use any technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location," etc. ... "If you violate any of the terms of this Agreement, your rights under this Agreement will automatically terminate without notice" etc.) ... not that anyone really reads those things lol.
Definitely. Do you think Persepolis would be [NG/BA](/s "Earth or Mars? I'm leaning towards Earth, but something interesting seems to be that Alexander allegedly regretted his destruction of the city (ie-rock bombs)... There is also conflict over if it truly was an act of revenge, or just alcohol (intoxication with a cause, eh?)")You're on to something! Source

Here is a graph I made for flip and burn calculations. v3 at the bottom is the maximum speed, its currently set to burn at 0.3g, and the distance is the shortest direct distance to mars. Its not quite that simple but its a good estimate. The x axis is currently set to time in days, where t0 is 1 days worth of seconds squared.
You can see the max velocity relative to mars's perpendicular is ~480,000m/s. If you accelerated until almost there, it would be almost twice that. Imagine breaking 1,000,000m/s in a few hours, you will have to burn at really high G to do so.
Of course, if you decided to burn at 1g backwards or something else bareable than yes you will get there faster but it will cost considerably more fuel. Actually stopping quickly would squish you.
Technically speaking, it's a very easy simulation, and holding on to it would be even easier. Considering how good science is in the Expanse, that would've been a piece of cake for them. All it requires is the initial positions of all the relevant objects that they'd need (or use), and just simulate positions for 400 years.
I forgot an application i used more then a decade ago, it was literary similar to Google Earth and Nasa's Globe one, for the whole solar system, you could input the time, and it would show the correct positions of objects in the solar system.
I'm not sure if you can do it with Stellarium, but i think it's doable.
EDIT: found it, Celestia
The book is Cibola Burn by James S.A. Corey.
You could try your local bookstore or library. Amazon also has it for purchase in either ebook or hard copy format.
It's available as an audiobook as well if that's your preference.

Go read. As somebody that works for the company, I'm most of the way thru it, and it's a really fair, level-headed look inside the company from an independent reporter that doesn't have a stake.
It's neat that you say "Upper Management should be in jail" (for...breaking...what laws?) when I doubt you can name anybody without googling. Who are you proposing to put in jail? Moses? Whitesides? What for?
Go read, instead of - I'm stabbing a guess here - losing a bunch of money on a speculative stock?
Because if you think that there wasn't hype before the company went public, you were not paying attention.

it's only a marginal increase in cost, and works just like any other ballpoint pen: https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Space-Pen-Retractable-ECL/dp/B01MT1WV6T/ref=sr\_1\_8?dchild=1&keywords=space+pen&qid=1621371209&sr=8-8
Gateway by Frederik Pohl is a classic, personally I think it holds up really well in spite of being written in 1977.
I also highly recommend the Probability series by Nancy Kress, from the early 2000's.
Both are about humans discovering and trying to use technology left behind by ancient, advanced alien civilizations, that we don't fully understand. Good stuff.
You should listen to the authors talk about it; they're not precious at all about the difference between the books and the show, do why should anything else be?
/u/ThatOneIKnow seems to have found it!
It comes in red and silver too! Just like the ones on the show, also saw some blue ones on Amazon.
I got all the books from Amazon directly, actually.

Edit 2: Actually, this one came from another Amazon Seller. I just noticed the release date isn't until October this year?
Edit 3: Here's the listing I got the paperback version from: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0356504271
Dude, please don't steal...support the show so we get more content like this in the future. You can buy a season pass from Amazon, and you get the episodes as they are released. Link I'm going to buy the next season myself some time soon.
