I’m not installing that.
The Reddit staff’s behavior around ignoring the majority outcry against the web redesign is still fresh in my mind.
i've tried a lot of the apps available in the app store and keep coming back to Apollo. really smooth scrolling, customizable gestures, full markdown editor, native UI design... it's a beautiful app, IMO. there is a small IAP in order to be able to post, but otherwise it's free and awesome.
Totally fair criticism, but it has the same permissions as the official Reddit app, Reddit just doesn't present it for their app and the wording for third party apps kinda sucks as you saw.
Here's Apollo's privacy policy: https://apolloapp.io/privacy/ and a specific quote:
> When signing into Apollo, it requests specific permissions from your Reddit account, such as the ability to upvote. This is very simply because in order for Apollo to do anything — something as simple as upvoting a link when you tap the upvote button — Reddit (rightly) requests that you give the client the ability to do these things. Apollo never performs any actions without you clearly requesting it to (such as by tapping a button). This is very simply required in order for the app to function whatsoever.
its a reddit client application for IOS users, way smoother than reddit app. you can also download videos on reddit with ease. u can read from their website regarding the app, its quite cool
It’s just better in literally every way. It depends on how you use it what you will value most.
I like swiping to vote, clear comment hierarchy, dark mode with tons of color options, and no ads ever. Those are my top few, plus it constantly improves as the dev keeps a pulse on the community and builds what is most requested.
Also check the subreddit you are in, the top post is the new update coming tomorrow. That change log list is just new features and he releases updates/fixes constantly.
I paid $25 for lifetime access to all pro features(notification servers cost money and he also has to live). Best deal ever, and I try to donate every time some new feature blows my mind as thanks.
Apollo Pro is “pay what you want” - the cheapest and most expensive are the same, you can just choose more or less if you want to support the developer.
Ultra is a monthly / yearly subscription (or $40 lifetime) because it enables things like notifications (which require paying a service like AWS monthly for a server instance). Monthly cost requires monthly payments.
This page explains the payment tiers in detail.
Buy a good reddit app, personally using Apollo on iOS because the developer is a super cool guy who listens a lot to the community based around the app, they even have a subreddit IIRC.
Edit: and apparently a website too now: https://apolloapp.io/
Apollo routes requests to imgur through its own caching server that acts as a proxy between the client (the app you are using) and Imgur (the API endpoint) because otherwise it would be too expensive for all those Imgur API calls. There’s a privacy policy page that you can read through if you have any concerns, but it‘s more for the app instead of the proxy server. The dev did a really good job in creating this app, so I would trust the Apollo proxy server not to mishandle my data.
Working on an 8 must be nice. I sadly lost it after installing one of the iOS 11 updates. I use Apollo now, which works well enough for the most part, but I do still miss AB. :(
If you're on an Apple device, there's a Reddit client called Apollo made by a former Apple employee. The app has many (many!) features, including the one you just described wherein if you accidentally tap the notification bar and it scrolls all the way up, you just tap it again and it takes back to where you were. It's freemium, so mostly free to use but you can purchase premium for additional perks. The app has its own subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/.
Haha fair question. In short it's a Reddit app for iOS (that's the Apple connection) that is an alternative to the official app, with a focus on a more iOS centric design with smoother navigation and some cool power features. https://apolloapp.io
Would love to know what you think!
Here’s the link to the site. The good markdown support, good performance, good design and an OwO icon sells it for me.
Plus it actually has decent mod tools if that’s something you care about.
You're wrong. Ultra includes Pro. Ultra is the top tier.
> Apollo Ultra, the highest tier, which includes everything in Apollo Pro plus additional features.
https://apolloapp.io/pro-ultra/
Edit: words
Apollo uses some of the Google analytics service to get automatic crash reports and also see which features within Apollo are used most frequently so that the developer knows what he needs to prioritize. So Christian himself is not making any extra money from tracking you, but Google may still be using the data coming from their services.
Here’s Apollo’s privacy policy (short read)
Here’s Google Firebase’s privacy policy
Edit: Also while Slide itself has no trackers, Reddit may have trackers built into their API that cannot be avoided even if you’re using 3rd party apps like Slide or Apollo.
That is the impact of connecting your account to the app, it needs that to work, for example reading your posts, well that is needed to view your posts within the app.
The privacy policy linked below provides some further info on what is collected and why.
Seems an easy solution is to use filters, filter out “stolen” and “dogs”. But you will miss out on discussions of breakout hits, such as Who let the dogs out and discussion of stolen elections, stolen hearts, and the popular hit movie, Stolen, featuring Nicholas Cage.
Apollo Reddit client makes this quite easy, so rather than expecting others to change your experience for you, why not just change your experience yourself?
You need to read the Apollo Privacy Policy and the links it contains.
The other commenter is correct with regards to the API’s. While Apollo doesn’t collect any data Reddit still does. They just get a tiny bit less data.
For iOS, I recommend Apollo.
The developer is constantly working to make it better based on feedback from the community, and it's a very nice app, with a user interface that I consider much better than the official app (like using touch gestures instead of tiny buttons). Take a look at /r/apolloapp.
The only major downside is that you need to pay for the ability to make posts from the app (commenting is free, of course). But most people don't need to make posts very much, and if you do, the in-app purchase also unlocks lots of customization options.
It also has a subscription service that you can use to get Reddit notifications as phone notifications (this costs money because the developer needs to pay for the notification server).
> 1. How is it different than the reddit app?
I'll let the dev speak for himself
> 2. Why was this made?
After reddit bought Alien Blue and shut it down, many users were unhappy with the official reddit app that was released as it was missing a lot of the things they liked about Alien Blue. The developer of this app was one of those people and made Apollo. Lots of people don't like the official reddit app for any number of reasons and chose to use a third party app.
> 3. Is it free?
You can download it for free to get a sense of the app and how it works. If it seems like an app you would want to use, the full functionality of the app is $3.
> 4. Why is it called Apollo app?
Why is your username -tenfours-?
Not OP, but Apollo's privacy policy states that: > Other than collecting anonymous statistics on feature usage (in order to prioritize which features to focus on), Apollo logs no information on you and has no interest in doing such.
Edit: private --> privacy
Have you tried Apollo? I totally agree with everything you're saying - I went through every Reddit app and returned to the official every time. Apollo is the only one I stuck with - frankly, I find it better than the official now. Lots of customization in swipes, gestures, etc. and packed with intuitive features. I think it's a choose-your-own-price to get the premium features, minimum $0.99usd. Totally worth it.
I have had use Apollo for one year. A few weeks ago I found out that you can wind/rewind GIFs (also Videos) by swiping on it. After this I watched the introducing video on apolloapp.io again and wondered I didn't notice this the last time. Such a brilliant feature - love this app. PS: can we get a video upload for Apollo!
> No it doesn't. It gets cut off by the notch. It doesn't magically stop there, that doesn't make any sense.
Looks like you’re the one that’s never used a notched iPhone.
Videos by default only use the space below the notch to render, effectively making the space around the notch a “bezel”.
> There’s no such thing. The apps get cut off by the notch. Are you dense?
https://apolloapp.io/assets/images/iphone-x.png
Care to mention what exactly got cut off in this app?
Here’s the FAQ page (found via going to settings->about->clicking the top where it has the logo thing)
General list:
Pro (one time payment of $5 or more):
Ultra (subscription of $1/month, $10/year, or $30 for lifetime (which is only for a short time before that option goes away apparently)):
Hey OP, I 100% recommend you to try the Apollo app on iOS. It's hands-down the best reddit experience I've ever had on any device (not just on iOS).
You can learn more about it at apolloapp.io or at r/apolloapp.
Sheesh, never thought about that! But well seeing as to how the countdown clock at Apollo’s Site points to exactly 6:30PM on 23rd, I guess I, living in India, will have to wait a lot more.
On mobile I use Apollo which is almost perfect, on desktop I'm juggling with premii and uforio.
I'm really trying to make Reddit usable and I've been trying for the past few months, I kinda enjoy the platform but if continues sucking this much I guess is farewell. In fact I opened this account just for a link and a few months later I started helping here, I've been for like 6/7 months.
The servers do not proxy your traffic to reddit, I 100% guarantee it.
The Apollo app is a thin client that makes network requests to reddit's API directly from your device. If you don't believe me how about the official privacy policy on the Apollo website?
> Apollo (obviously) uses the Reddit API to function, therefore Reddit is able to see requests made and use that information (such as, as with all Internet requests, your IP address, and if you sign in to Reddit within Apollo, your account ID, for instance) as they see fit (for advertising or something of the like, as an example). By using Apollo, you're (obviously) subject to Reddit's Privacy Policy as well as any other services/websites you visit/encounter/use within the app.
r/apolloapp on iOS has an ‘Ultra’ tier that that actually pushes instantly and ‘Boost’ on Android does this from what I understand (I have no experience with Boost, but that is the solution consistently mentioned for Android)
I've always heard Apollo talked about very highly for iPhone, made by a former apple employee and has a large following. Anything is better than the official app.
r/apolloapp
I explain that in the privacy policy here: https://apolloapp.io/privacy
It definitely sounds a little weird at first, I hear ya, but it's literally only so the app can function. Totally fair question.
My guess would be, the Reddit app is being bad. I've heard complaints about it before. If you're on iOS, I highly recommend Apollo.
And Markdown has, indeed, been around for ages, but Gruber's initial and only implementation is in Perl (a fine language but not conducive to embedding in other apps), and he left a lot of edge cases undefined and obvious extensions unimplemented, so many people have stepped up to fill in the gaps (and reimplement on other platforms/languages), and each has differing ideas of which direction to go. So there are hundreds of "flavors" of Markdown out there. And Gruber has resisted repeated pleas to step up and put his name behind an extended and more rigorous spec, always saying that it was sufficient for his needs as-is. So the closest thing to a current standard is GitHub Flavored Markdown (gfm) or CommonMark. But any app developer can use any library developer's implementation of Markdown (or roll their own), so, we get inconsistencies.
Two solutions:
The Apollo Reddit app opens Spotify links directly in the Spotify app (and is overall a significantly better Reddit client than the official iOS one.)
The iOS app Opener is a simple app that allows you to open URL in their native apps rather than the web. Spotify is one of their supported apps.
Here is their privacy policy they claim they care but it's up to you to trust them, they closed source and they also use non-open source telemetry and youtube api.
Try Slide for reddit it's open source, probably most privacy respecting option for iOS.
>Tens alguma coisa em mente?
Pela adoção que o projeto está a ter acho que fazer algo tipo a Apollo App seria o melhor. Basicamente vai ser o feed do reddit com melhor design. Neste caso o Tal Canal seria numa página em vez de app.
I understand what you’re saying
But if a developer creates an app with full functionality, and disables some features to make it free, then the question of free becomes a matter of perspective. You can say he created a paid app and offered a lite version for casual users since it’s an easy way to market your product, or you could say he created a free app and added features to subsidize the free use.
The nice thing about the free version is that it’s perfect for the casual user. Here is the breakdown in case you are curious. https://apolloapp.io/pro-ultra/
He has a real loyal community of users, so I’d say he’s doing something right.
Mild karma farming & attention by posting the fact that you paid for Pro and/or Ultra.
Jokes aside, the differences are listed between free, Pro & Ultra are listed here.
Let me preface this by saying I am not in anyway a marketer for Apollo. I just enjoy it. That being said, my answer is in two parts: 1. I honestly didn’t even look at the different. Pro is $5 and after a year of loving the ap, I felt that was the least I could do. I considered it like a donation that gave me some bonus stuff 2. Here’s a real answer
I’ll add there is something called Apollo Ultra that offers some further customization stuff that I don’t care about and I don’t find worth a monthly subscription. Pro is one time, ultra is monthly. Make the decision by your own wishes.
https://apolloapp.io/pro-ultra/
The feature breakdown is available there along with the reasoning behind it and also in Settings. Pro is a one-time charge; notifications require Ultra which you either subscribe to or pay a higher sum upfront.

That’s really weird. Possibly wonderful. I may give it a try. Though I’ve never used. URLs to stay on the old interface, just the opt-out setting. (When I do feel like a new interface, I use Apollo on iOS/iPadOS, but I like the old interface better for some/many things.)
Ah okay my bad, need to be a bit clearer
There are two tiers: Apollo Pro & Ultra, with Ultra being the highest tier.
You can look at this explanation by the app dev here for the features: https://apolloapp.io/pro-ultra/
I'm currently on Apollo Ultra mainly to support the dev and I like the extra features on top of Pro, but if the Pro is good enough for you, then you can do a one-time unlock with a base amount.
Here's what someone said:
>> This is now a blockquote appreciation thread, please join in. > > I think blockquotes are cool > > They just seem so fancy!
Nesting an emphasized link inside strong text, neato!
That's fair, I usually try to stay free unless I use the app heavily and like what the devs do with the app. Here's the whole write-up about Pro-Ultra from the dev that delves into all the features and reasoning. I definitely prefer this over the official app and am so glad I made the switch over
Hey man, great job taking care of yourself and getting sober, and I’m sorry to hear about the ads.
Here are a couple things that can help get rid of almost all ads. I pretty much exclusively use Reddit on mobile and use the Apollo app. Can’t recommend it enough.
The other thing I run is called PiHole and it blocks most ads on your home network. So no matter what device you use on your home network, there are a lot less ads. It’s not too hard to setup, it just runs on a raspberry pi.
Thanks for the shoutout, we’re just happy to be keepin’ the streets clean & keep the conversation flowing 😎👉👉
I’m not aware of the specific circumstances of this survey stuff, but it seems like it is related to how the recommendation algorithm on New Reddit and Mobile App Reddit recommend subreddits to new users; i.e. if you’re using https://old.reddit.com or mobile apps like https://apolloapp.io/, then this likely doesn’t affect you
There isn't, sorry, my "roadmap" if you'd call it that is more dynamic and based on what's happening. If there's suddenly an iOS update adding cool features, that'll probably take priority for a second, if there's a new feature people are suddenly all asking for, same, etc.
More or less, if it gets a lot of upvotes on the feature requester, it'll probably be sooner rather than later. If it's less popular, it's trickier.
Notifications have always required Apollo Ultra? Been that way for a long time. https://apolloapp.io/pro-ultra/
Having said that, notifications haven’t worked properly in weeks so once the issues are fixed maybe they’ll work for you again as well.
Apollo is the best reddit app I've ever used.
iOS only, specifically built to take advantage of modern iOS design/features.
I know it sounds like an ad but seriously - screw all those knockoff apps and subpar implementations. I'm just a random guy that uses reddit too much and am more than happy with it. If you're on iOS and not running Apollo to consume reddit, you're missing out.
Thats answered at the link below. There are no ads in Apollo so no way to make money off it without in-app upgrades. The subscription pays for a notification server which is an ongoing cost.
https://apolloapp.io/pro-ultra/
I paid the $5 so I could customize the gestures and its great to have a classic app with no nags to upvote or post, no sub recommendations, and the video experience is far better. The reddit ads actually dont bother me. Its the video player and nagging.
Worth noting that for Apollo you will need to pay a one-off fee of $5 to be able to post and $10/year (or $30 lifetime) to receive push notifications.
https://apolloapp.io/pro-ultra/
I don’t have an issue with that - it just means that the free version of the app is really only for people who consume Reddit content and don’t contribute.
No. The app I use does not have my password. It asks me to have Reddit generate an OAuth Token that Reddit will accept as a revokable key to use Reddit API functionality as me.
There is a bug in latest Reddit for iOS app, where your new comment reply appears like it’s a reply to the entire post.
It’s a bug, see here. More user reports in r/bugs here. Solution: it’s only a visual bug. Leave page and come back, it’ll appear correctly.
IMHO, Reddit’s app is “meh” but Apollo for iOS is dank, see: r/ApolloApp | https://apolloapp.io

> For Apollo Ultra you can either pay 99 cents for 1 month at a time, or $10 for a year, or for a limited time $30 for a lifetime unlock.
Been on Reddit for 7 years, and I'll be on Reddit for another 7.
While you're reading this comment. Please check out Apollo for Reddit. The best Reddit client, from one veteran to another.
Once upon a time a truck went to the supermarket to pick up some bananas for a yummy feast among friends. It was a really nice supermarket with blueberries.
After he got back it started to snow really hard so they all had a fire.
At the fire they had FUN and wanted to have more bonfires and smores in the future.
Also hier sollte es ganz normal aussehen und das ist der direkte imgur Link
Ich glaub die offizielle Reddit app ist ein ziemlicher dreck. Dabei gibt's für iOS doch Apollo - https://apolloapp.io/
On a computer, RES allows you to apply various filters, including "visited" links.
Additionally, uBlock Origin is effective at removing ads.
On iOS, Apollo allows you Hide Posts (although not in the freemium edition, I think).
I do most of my reddit browsing on my computer with a browser, but when I do use my phone, I use Boost (https://boostforreddit.com/) and it's been a fantastic experience from day 1. All sorts of customization to make your reddit experience so much better.
It's only for Android, so if you're using an iPhone, then I've heard Apollo (https://apolloapp.io/) is a good option, but I've never owned an iPhone, so I don't know for myself.
Mehr bilde ich mir ein, brauch' ich nicht.
That’s a great point I came across while I was designing this too. One of the main feature of Apollo is its native iOS design.
> It features a beautiful, native iOS design, smooth, customizable...
From Apollo’s website
That’s why for the macOS version, I tried to match it as closely as possible to how a native app would look and feel.
Think I saw it in r/apolloapp but I couldn’t find the post again. That being said he doesn’t mention any Limited spots on his website so I don’t think you have to worry
I'd recommend reading this. I think the $25 is for lifetime notifications, or if subscriptions is more your thing you can pay that way instead.
But I agree, download some different reddit clients and find which ones work for you.
You know Apollo Ultra offers this right? Check in notifications in the settings for it. I know it’s locked behind a pay feature, but that’s to cover server costs as I believe Reddit doesn’t expose this to third party clients. Check the FAQ for info. https://apolloapp.io/notifications-faq/
Apollo deploy their [own server to handle notification](/r/iphone/comments/9ruuxn/apollo_13_is_now_available_i_added_notifications/). Basically using the OAuth token the server regularly poll Reddit API and then push notification when appropriate. This obviously costs money. In theory, anyone could just deploy their own push server on free VM, but that's too much hassle compared to just pay a buck monthly.
You haven't tried very hard.
Both are best in class as someone who has an Android phone for work and iPhone for personal use.
Do your self a favor and use Apollo instead https://apolloapp.io/
Best feature, "mark as read on scroll past" combined with "remove read posts on refresh" so when you accidentally find yourself back at the top again through fat finger you can just refresh and clear all the posts you've already seen.
I tried to answer that in the FAQ as well: https://apolloapp.io/notifications-faq/
But that's a totally fair question, essentially I do! If you buy Ultra, you get everything underneath it, you might have had to buy "twice" because Ultra came out a full year after Apollo initially came out, it wasn't really something that I had even thought about when it originally came out.
As for why right now there's still two options (Pro/Ultra), is just to give people the option. Not everyone needs notifications/everything, so they don't have to get Ultra, they can just pay a one time small fee for Pro. Heck lots of people (the majority) don't even have Pro and get along fine with that. But if you want to, Ultra's there. I just didn't want to give the impression that Apollo's a subscription only app, since it's really not, it's just an option for a feature that inherently has monthly costs.
and you're entered. If you want something to comment about, uhh, help me name the Apollo mascot. You have 24 hours. (I'm just being a smart ass, good luck to everyone who entered.)
I’m pretty sure there’s already a request for gallery mode here: https://apolloapp.io/feature-requests
Even if there is you can go and vote for it. The Dev has said he goes by order of importance to the community first.
Thank you for doing your duty, soldier.
Also, heads-up, you can remove the '?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app', which is useless and just tells people which platform you're using. Or, if you don't want to do it manually, as well as having greater customisability, gestures, no adverts and a post-and-comment-editor, you can use Apollo.
No problem.
So there’s 2 different tiers, Pro and Ultra. Pro gives you basically all of the features with one-time (imo) small fee. AFAIK it’s lifetime purchase. Then there’s Ultra, which is 1$/month, or 10$/year, or 25$/life. If you don’t pay for Pro, you aren’t even able post lol. But at least you can test and feel some of the basic functionality.
Ultra is only for push notifications. The reasoning behind this is because the dev does notifications a bit differently than other 3rd party clients, and actually runs a server for notification delivery, instead like some apps which just poll for notifications in certain intervals. So notification delivery should be pretty close to what you get in the official. And servers have monthly costs, so I understand why it’s like this.
You can find more info about the Ultra here.
And yeah Apollo dev is one of the more active and respected ones in whole iOS scene.
And yes Reddit has the final word on which features it will release to 3rd parties. But if you compare Reddit to any other large social medias, it has the most open 3rd party API. For example, Twitter limits so many things when it comes to 3rd party clients, Reddit does some “non-essential” things. But that might change in future. Especially new features coming to “New Reddit”. The “Old Reddit” should be fine but who can say how it is couple years from now.
P.S. I hope someone corrects me if I’m wrong about the paid options details, it’s been a while…
There is not currently a way to do that, but the dev does take feature requests here: https://apolloapp.io/feature-requests
If something gets enough traction it will very likely get implemented. My assumption would be that if he ever added in the sound for gifs with sound he’d add a respect mute switch/start muted option for people who want auto playing gifs but no sound.
1) as a pro tip get apollo for the colored comments theme. It makes it way easier to track comment threads on mobile.
2) if you're using your browser, you should be able to get out of mobile mode, and use the desktop version from your phone
3) if you want to do this from the official reddit app, tap the three dots button at the top right of the screen on your post. A window will come up with options, and one of them will be Delete post
.
Apollo is a 3rd-party app for Reddit for iOS. Apollo Pro is when you pay to unlock posting and other features on Apollo. Apollo Ultra is a more premium feature which you can get as either monthly, yearly, or lifetime, purchase, which includes app theming, a new custom app icon every month, and real-time notifications.
Hope that answers your question :)
I love .io domains, heck it's used as the main https://apolloapp.io domain, but they're expensive. :P This is basically not a domain users should see very often so I don't care about it being pretty, xyz is very cheap.
Sorry for the late reply, I was in the shower. And don’t worry, I’ve uploaded images to Imgur before (and since I use Apollo it’s a ton easier). Here are some pictures: https://imgur.com/a/SfiuC0a/.

I'm referring to this:
> Apollo never performs any actions without you clearly requesting it to
That's in their privacy policy. Yet the app reads the clipboard without you requesting it to, everytime you open it. That would be a GDPR issue, even if no data was breached.
Developer is fully aware of this issue for many months now.
I know I'm rather late to the party on this one, but I've been trying out Dank for the last few days and I quite like it. Considering Apollo won't be coming to Android any time soon (if ever) I personally think this is the next bets thing. It's in rather early development with about 2000 invite-only testers, but if you use something like the Yalp Store you can pull the .apk directly from the Play Store without any verification issues. There's a lot of work to be done, but I already like the look of it.
