http://www.fbpurity.com/install.htm
Also available 'officially' through the chrome webstore. Looks rather unprofessional at first site and the settings may be a bit messy at first, but it's very good at what it does. Loaded with options. Does more than more other plugins so far.
If you use FB on your computer (rather than mobile/tablet): http://www.fbpurity.com
You can literally block any word you want. Don't wanna hear about murders? Block it! Don't want to see recipes because you're on a diet? Block it! It works very well and there are tons of options.
I use an extension called FB Purity to drastically trim down my newsfeed so it's only posts from friends I care about. No shared videos, no notices that a middle school classmate liked a meme, etc.
One addon to rule them all when it comes to facebook management.
http://www.fbpurity.com/
Edit: for all those that want to hide sponsored stories/box, game invites, sort the feed to most recent and lots more. Check out the addon and what it can do. There is a lot of options in it. Made it so I could use facebook for what I wanted, keeping up to date on people and groups. Without all the spam.
This is it, self control.
I feel so many people get carried away, there is another option. What I have found to be very helpful (though it takes a bit of time) is to unfollow everyone, all family, friends and pages I have liked. You will end up with an empty News Feed. This solves half the problem. Then use something like Facebook Purity to clean up/ hide all the ads, birthday notices etc. Facebook for me now is basically just a messaging/ contact book, which is what I think it should be.
If you are in doubt I suggest trying this at least.
EDIT: Just to clarify, there is a difference between unfollowing and de-friending someone. You can unfollow them so nothing appears in your newsfeed (which they won't know about) and still be their friends.
an extension that facebook keeps trying to get taken down that allows you to actually filter facebook, decide how stuff shows up on your timeline, and, most importantly, blocks all the fucking ads, featured/promoted posts, and bullshit like that.
You may be interested in the FB Purity browser addon that gives you a lot of customization options for filtering out Facebook posts. I filter out all sponsored posts, shares, links, pretty much everything except new pictures and text posts. I think I'm filtering out >95% at this point.
Facebook is actually really lovely! It's not terribly active once you filter out all the crap, only a few posts a day, but that's okay.
I think Facebook does the exact opposite. They even have paid "promoting" options for someone who's selling something to be able to reach people beyond their own network of friends. You could try using the FBP extension (available for both Chrome and Firefox) to lower the amount of shit on your newsfeed, including but not limited to FB's own trending column.
I use a Chrome plugin called FB Purity. It lets you set a list of filters and anything containing those terms gets automatically hidden. It's literally made Facebook bearable again.
Here's my current filter list of MLM bullshit:
I also use it to prevent spoilers on shows I like:
I filter out every annoying controversy the minute it starts to flare up:
You can get rid of 90% of clickbait and share-spam just with these filters alone:
It's a must-have for an insane political season like this:
And lastly, I just get rid of shit I couldn't possibly care less about.
It's seriously awesome.
And if that doesn't work, I just hide or unfriend the offending person altogether. There are only so many filters I can use on somebody before I realize maybe they're just not for me.
You can install an awesome plugin to hide all sorts of things you don't want to see.
With FB Purity you could choose to hide all articles posted by friends, and you'll still see their statuses or photos, therefore be able to keep in contact.
It's also awesome for hiding annoying trends by adding filters for things like "ALS" or "ice bucket" for example.
Try installing the SocialFixer extension. Or else try the Fluff Busting Purity extension. Both work in Chrome & Firefox and both fix a number of irritations in Facebook, including the sorting preference. I started with FB Purity and more recently have been using SocialFixer.
Although none can give you the true original date posted sorting that we all want back.
> F.B. Purity is a browser extension / add-on that lets you clean up and customise Facebook. It filters out the junk you don't want to see, leaving behind the stories and page elements you do wish to see. The list of story types that FBP hides is customizable to your taste.>
The website looks pretty shady, but I have been using it for a few years now with no issues.
In addition to what you can see in the picture (which I only just noticed and thought many of you would appreciate) you can make it so that people can't send you game requests or things like that, very highly personalise what you see on your newsfeed and in the side bars, and, if it floats your boat, you can even see who unfriends you.
I can truthfully say I have never installed the App. I only log in on my laptop using F.B.Purity. There appear to be two downsides to this:
I use this browser add-on to remove things like these from my feed, so even if I haven't logged on in a few days I'll still get original actual posts/photos in my feed from friends from days ago, and they won't get drowned out by adverts
There's been a version of this for ages, for Firefox, Chrome (and possibly Safari?) called "Fluff Busting Purity" - allows you to completely customize facebook by selecting what you want to see. Can remove ads, sort your timeline by newest, and even has Regex filters to remove stories about subjects you don't like. http://www.fbpurity.com/
If you are using chrome, you can get an extension called facebook purity, and it contains a text filter, so you can automatically hide posts containing any given word, and you can also do it by username basis too. http://www.fbpurity.com/
Install FB Purity. Theres a lot of shit ot can do.
Basically gives you control that Facebook doesn't want you to have. (not shitting you, they have been banned before for allowing users to see Facebook in a way FB didnt want them too)
Really helpful when you have 50 people who feel the need to videotape themselves dumping icewater on their heads and they all feel the need to use the same title icebucket challenge. Wont be seeing those anytime soon.
FB users, try the "Facebook Purity addon" to set up a text filter that will make Robin Williams posts disappear. It's marginally effective!*
(because it gets the posts where someone types the name out, but it doesn't get those "omg such tears" photo posts where the name isn't actually typed.)
FB Purity ("Fluff Busting" after Facebook sent a threatening letter :D) cleans it up even more. No Ice Bucket Challenge, no "What Character are you", no recommended shit etc.)
Oculus team has been pondering to better the system as much as possible. I really dont think a third party software can do it under open source or something, atleast in starting years. Also not to mention only IF facebook wants it to exist.
Didnt we see how they banned FB Purity ?
If you using android analogy, did we have issues with certain hardware drivers ?
Some tips for improving your Facebook experience:
If you find that one of your facebook friends consistently posts crap you don't care about, mouse over one of their posts in your feed, then click on the X in the top corner of their post. Then click "Hide all by <friend's name>".
Use the same method to hide updates from pages you've liked.
Install F.B. Purity. You can customize exactly what you want to remove from your news feed.
I prefer Facebook Purity's filter option, it works perfectly and I'm mainly using it to avoid hearing about Donald Trump and Final Fantasy XV spoilers.
Edit: Sorry, for some reason I assumed anything goes and didn't realise I was on Android Apps. Needless to say, it's still good. I wish the plugin I mentioned existed as an App.
I use FB Purity. It won't completely disable your newsfeed but has tons of customizing options. I check off things like disable sponsored content, videos, trending, apps/games, joined groups, facebook stories, event stories, and other stuff to clean it up. At this point my newsfeed is most only my friends status' and photos.
There's no way to control what shows up on others people's accounts. If you're a "Friend of a Friend" then you're most likely showing up to others, unless you find every undesirable account and block them.
You can customize what you see (or don't see) by using the F.B. Purity extension. You can hide the "People you may know" and "Suggested Friends" sections entirely with it.
Facebook seem to be blocking people from posting links to http://www.fbpurity.com now when i try and post a link to it, i get an error message "oops something has gone wrong" and the link never gets posted... very weird
I use Facebook Purity which is pretty similar but I do like to switch on seeing only stuff from my friends and clearing all the adds and junk. I guess I should quit at some point but it's easier for me having a centralised contact base I can use no matter where I am in the world.
I use facebook like productivity software:
I use the Fluff Bust Purity Chrome Plugin to block facebook advertisements, certain notifications, autoplaying videos, animations, and the poor formatting of facebook.
I have a minimal group on my friends group in facebook. I spring clean. I have less than 240 people on. These are people I have actually met and have had conversations in person with.
I block people I don't want to talk to or who are toxic.
I don't reply to every comment. only the ones that interest me.
I like, not disklike.
I don't add work people. I don't add family I don't trust like friends.
If you are on a computer, use the FB purity extension/plugin for FF or Chrome, and you can not only get rid of all the ansillary shit on your newsfeed, you can also add filters to your feed. I have all posts blocked where certain keywords are present, e.g. candy crush, breastfeeding, feminist, obama, ebola, or Jesus. You can customize it to your liking though, if the aforementioned terms are interesting to you.
I use F.B. Purity. In it, you can do a freeform text filter. Current list consists of:
what-character-are-you (that annoying site where 90% of stupid questionnaires come from)
hockey
formula
football
olympic
Bernie
Sanders
Hillary
Clinton
Donald
Trump
republican
democrat
Surprisingly few news pass through that I don't give a crap about. Works better than the "I don't want to see this shit" filter of Facebook, that seems to forget the settings once every year.
It's probably too late to not get buried, but there IS an app for that!
Facebook Purity is a chrome extension that can find and remove from your feed any pictures of babies, dogs, cats, or whatever other stuff you ask it to filter out. (It also has some other neat features like notifying you when someone unfriends you for posting too many prequel memes).
But how does it work?? I'm guessing Facebook is working on their own filtering technology. Some pictures my wife put up the other day didn't load right, and had descriptions in the image box instead - "tree, smiling people, dog, baby" - stuff like that. Nifty.
I did this and it seems to have removed, what I'd guess, is about 90% of the posts about Pokemon. It's really only filtering out comments and post titles with the specified word in it.
Also, if you're tired of that shit on facebook (on non-mobile browsers), get FB Purity and set "Pokemon" as a blocked key word.
You can install http://www.fbpurity.com/ on your desktop browsers, but not on mobile. But this is good, because it means I facebook less on mobile, which is just feeding the addiction anyway.
It seems FB now puts live video stories your friends are interacting with on the very top of your newsfeed, because, hey, it's fucking live, you don't want to miss it, right? I think this extension can also block that.
F.B. Purity - Similar to Facebook Cleaner from OP's list but with more features, a text filter and a friends whitelist. They have a really awful website and logo but it's a good extension.
AlienTube is also a good one, although he has currently stopped development of the extension because of Apple's policy changes.
A lot of facebook clutter is from the sponsored, trending, and whatever posts that have nothing to do with keeping in touch with friends.
I use fbpurity to keep that all hidden and did what you did with the slimming of the friends list, liked pages, and groups and things are much cleaner and easier to navigate.
I used this extension to help clean up my timeline but it was kind of buggy and not sure if it currently works any better.
I'd post this:
> Whoever reported my picture yesterday, please un-friend me right now. It's clear we having nothing in common at all.
If you have FB Purity running and they actually do it, you'll know who it is.
There's a plugin for Firefox & Chrome called "Facebook Purity". This will alert you of any friends that delete you, or you delete, as well as allow you to customize a lot of different aspects of your facebook interface.
I've got a script called Facebook Purity that gets rid of all the shit that I don't care about seeing on my news feed and on the side bars (I highly recommend it). One of the features is that it notifies me when someone removes me from their friends list.
yes "FB purity", its available for firefox, chrome, safari and opera. install it, then just add "god, jesus" without the quotes to the Custom Text Filter textbox on the options screen : http://www.fbpurity.com
I can't get rid of Facebook (use it for work, unfortunately), HOWEVER I've found a few things that have made my feed at least bearable.
Facebook Purity - you can control a ton of what you do and don't see in your feed with this. It also cuts down on the ads you view.
I've also left groups. I'm a new dad so I thought I'd check out some of the dad groups. FUCK THAT. It's all airing of personal dramas, stupid links and memes and what's worse is it's not associated with people I even actually know. Ditch the groups so FB is only people you actually know.
I prefer reddit, don't even bother with Twitter that much except for people I know. It's made things tolerable, but not preferable. If I didn't need it for work, I'd ditch them all.
I'm not certain what you mean by the "news feed" (I may be overthinking your post) as without the news feet you'd not see any of your FB friends postings. If that is the case then AJtfM7zT4tJdaZsm's advice to use uBlock Origin and block Facebook altogether or in part should work well.
If by "news feed" you mean the news ticker bar on the right side of the page then either F.B. Purity or Social Fixer should do the trick.
Check out the FB Purity plugin for Chrome and Firefox. Lets you set your wall by most recent as the default, informs you when someone disappears from your friends list, and all kinds of other things.
Eugh, this is such a big pet peeve of mine. I started using the "Hide All by...<insert spammy fanpage here>for almost EVERYTHING regardless of content. Slowly, but surely, my FB feed is becoming more bearable. (FB Purity is also awesome.)
Awesome, I like Facebook Purity and News Feed Eradicator. You can use them to change your interface or get rid of your Facebook timeline while still have access to specific profiles and messenger. You'll get rid of FOMO and realize how few people actually mean something to you!
Are you sure you are using F.B.(FluffBusting)Purity - Chrome Web Store.
After Facebook complained to Google about the extension using the Facebook name, Google took it down. Some other person made a fake extension saying it was the original.
The original made the necessary changes and is back in the Chrome store.
From the F.B. Purity news page Dated Sep 6 > Unfortunately a scammer has seized the opportunity to take advantage of this situation by uploading 3 fake copies of F.B. Purity to the webstore. The fake versions all have “FB-Purity .Net” in the title. Those versions of FBP are illegal, unsafe and not to be trusted. If you have installed a version of FBP via the Chrome Webstore that has “FB-Purity .Net” in the title, I strongly advise you to uninstall it immediately.
Hey, here's an actually helpful answer: Go get the FB Purity add-on for your browser. It lets you customize almost everything you see on the main FB page - you can remove the trending topics stuff, the news ticker bar, whatever. It'll even alert you with a pop-up if someone unfriends you.
It makes it almost tolerable for me to visit FB in the morning and read my friends' posts as fast as I can so that I can leave the crappy site as soon as possible.
http://www.fbpurity.com/ can tell you if someone unfriends you on fb I think.
And you can also find out if somebody blocked you if you can't write them private messages anymore. You can't even input text in a communication with them anymore nor can you open their profile page. So you can check that if you think someones mad at you.
I don't know the inner workings of it, but I have been pleased by the [unsanctioned] chrome extension FB Purity http://www.fbpurity.com/install.htm.
Makes it go into chronological order automatically, and gives deleted friends updates.
A browser plugin I like:
But it won't stop you from showing up on other people's feed.
When you see someone you don't like in the "suggestions", just block them. It doesn't have to be a swinger either. I've done that with people I know in real life whom I can't stand. I wish I could block them from seeing me in person, too.
Well it helps to know your users needs and work out what solution fits best for them. The examples I give are a no-brainer because people are so used to inferior windows software it is easy to show the advantage of alternatives.
In fact that is often where I get a shoe in. They have some esoteric windows issue like say IE locking up on some webpage or another. Show them firefox an explain to them no-script and the other quality addons you can get it is surprising how receptive they are to it.
The best received one I recommend for any Windows user who is of the average persuasion is FB Purity I swear to god their faces when they look at Facebook and it is so clean and usable is priceless.
Not to sound like a shill or anything but it's worth checking out: http://www.fbpurity.com/
Can block anything you want. I don't even like seeing "recommended" crap, like pages to "like" or whatever, and I never know any of the "recommended friends." Waste of space on the page.
I use http://www.fbpurity.com/ and it lets me view the left side old-school style, with names, not just the tiny pics. It has tons of great features to fix facebook crap. http://i.imgur.com/G9Sgr.jpg
On my facebook I...
Don't "like" anything. Most like pages have a way to harvest your email/other info
I never add any apps of any type. Most of them are annoying as hell anyway.
Add people who I don't know or people who are obvious spammers.
I also use FBpurity.
Here's the solution to this issue:
Take a look at this ad on. It cleans up ads, puts comments back in chrono order, remove Suggest Crap, and if you want to have a custom filter like RES... it has one of those too. So, no Trump or No HRC comments ever at all again. The guy really updates this program and I do in fact donate a fiver every year. http://www.fbpurity.com/
PSA for those who don't like Facebook's ads and annoying spam:
Extension that takes the all fluff out of Facebook, lets you customize the page, etc. Been using it for about a year and I've forgotten what FB was like until I saw my friends using it again.
Like going from the STI ward in an NYC hospital to walking in Sweden's immaculate plant seed vault
I'll echo what a lot of others have said and say that, as with almost everything, moderation is the key.
Have you heard of Facebook Purity? It's a browser extension that cuts out all the bullshit "media" but lets you keep the "social".
I got rid of my facebook account finally, but before I did, the only way I used it for the last year was through FB Purity http://www.fbpurity.com/
It doesn't fix the mobile experience, but it gives you fine-grained control over what you see in a browser and how you see it. It basically solves any and all gripes people have with the site.
It actually helped to make me realize that there really isn't any reason to keep using facebook, but it took way too long.
Personally, I use the Fluff Busting Purity add-on for Facebook, and I share it regularly. It removes all sorts of crap from the site, including getting rid of the formatting in those posts and overriding colors/fonts/etc on the page (which I can already do with another extension, but is a nice feature anyway). It also removes sections that you don't want and can filter out status messages to a second tab so they don't show up in feed (great for political crap, sports teams, etc.)
I can't imagine using FB on mobile where this type of thing isn't available. What's even sadder is the amount of time FB changes code to try to break extensions like these, instead of realizing people don't want that crap and would be fine turning it off if given a choice.
You can also download facebook purifier plugin and disable the newsfeed and many other things that you don't like. When the site loads up you will see the first post for about half a second then the newsfeed dissapears. http://www.fbpurity.com/install.htm
FB Purity can help makes things a little more bearable if you're using a Browser. I don't 'like' anything but my friends personal posts and comments and filter out a lot of crap via FB Purity. Helps keep things under control.
After seeing all the posts about people tired of seeing ads and too many notifications, there's a browser extension called F.B. Purity that lets you filter all that out.
http://www.fbpurity.com/install.htm
Used it for over two years now, made it so much usable and bearable.
Facebook Purity Does a good job of allowing you to customize the appearance of Facebook as well, and you can force it to change it to "Most Recent" every time the page loads, so you don't need to worry about resetting it.
Makes Facebook very customisable. Remove all the bs post types, force it to show newest first, remove the ability to see games and all the other useless functionality that you don't want, remove ads completely, and whatever else you can find that it does.
I don't have anything specifically on my phone. The best way to keep it from distracting me is to put it in another room or put it on airplane mode. Then when my habit to check it kicks in and I reach for it I have that cue telling me that now is not the time.
When I'm at home on my desktop computer I use FB Purity Chrome extension to turn off my newsfeed on Facebook when I'm trying to get work done. Especially if I'm doing a coursera course since procrastination is such a reflex for me sometimes I need that moment to stop me so I can redirect my attention to the task I'm working on.
Hope that helps a little.
FB Purity does work on E10s (aka electrolysis aka multiprocess architecture), you just need to update to the latest version of FBP. Check out the release notes for FBP v16.0.0 : http://www.fbpurity.com/news/f-b-purity-v16-0-lets-you-filter-photos-by-the-contents-of-the-photos/
Må man anbefale F.B. Purity?
Det har jeg brugt i årevis, og får aldrig reklamer. Der kan desuden ændres meget andet via det plugin. Det er nærmest påkrævet, for at holde Facebook ud.
It is possible that something like FB Purity might clean it up. At least I'm not seeing any ads. Available in extension and script extension varieties.
I have to commend you. Your support is thorough, understandable and most likely 100% correct. After trying every single one of your solutions with none of them working, I decided to do some digging on WHY none of this was working in the app.
Turns out, Facebook slapped these guys with a C&D to remove the feature to filter out words (most likely for advertising reasons). So all the coding in the world couldn't get it to work.
So, I apologize for wasting yours and everyone's time providing me with what are most likely correct and working solutions! I really thank you and appreciate your help and if I ever need any RegExp help in the future, I know what to reference.
If you're interested in actually filtering out words on your Facebook, I did find the API that works with the most recent version of Firefox. I have successfully removed the annoying baby photos from my newsfeed.
F.B. Purity to the rescue! A few months ago I was tired of wasting so much time seeing things I didn't care about, especially "Fwob liked this" and "Fwob commented on this" as you say. I took a hiatus, then started missing the good things, and found F.B. Purity. Spend about 10-15 minutes setting up exactly what things you want hidden in your news feed, and it will totally improve your Facebook experience!
Great little program called fb purity http://www.fbpurity.com/
It has an option to sort your feed by newest updates. And if you're like me and hate all the random bs your friends and family post and just want OC add "Shared" "Liked" and "Via" into the text filter to get rid of 99% of the garbage.
Sadly haven't found any mobile options for my feed, but this is something at least.
Facebook Purity: http://www.fbpurity.com/
Although this won't solve all of your problems, it will solve a lot of them. You can basically enter a bunch of keywords and any post that contains those keywords will automatically be hidden from your feed.
I have a list of politically based words that I keep adding to. There is nothing I give less of a fuck about than other people's political opinions.
I agree with you and My FB is very customized to see only the thing I want to know about, there is no negativity at all on my "news feed".
I use http://www.fbpurity.com/install.htm to filter many subject I don't care about, especially their "words" filters where you enter a word or sentence and if it appears on your news-feed it will be hidden.
Of course I use an ABP (AdBlock) with custom filters.
Hijacking the top comment: There's a Chrome extension called F.B Purity that allows you to block videos (as well as many other things) from your news feed.
If you want to avoid helping content thieves or are simply tired of having your news feed cluttered with shitty videos, I highly recommend it.
Youre absolutely right that Facebook is screening posts. I heard about this awhile ago with the
Facebook Purityadd on I installed a few years ago. It allows greater control over Facebook and the company doesn
t like it. They went to war with the guy who built it. Facebook screened out any of my posts liking the Purity add on so my friends didn`t see it. Read a bit about the developers struggles here if you like! http://www.fbpurity.com/
When I used FB daily, I'd run an extension called facebookpurity or something along those lines. It allowed for persistence of "most recent" and hid all the spam.
It may be worth looking in to.
Edit: http://www.fbpurity.com/
It allows you to configure a metric ton worth of options to customize how you see facebook. You can filter specific keywords, alter the order in which posts are shown, disable autoplay, disable ads, hide the chatwindow, and so on.
It's a blocking filter for the plug-in Addblock Plus: https://youtube.adblockplus.me/en/
It let's you get rid of the comment section as well, which I like.
I also use a plugin called FBPurity, to heavily filter facebook: http://www.fbpurity.com/
This includes a setting for getting rid of the entire news feed, which removes a lot of distraction. I still don't like facebook very much and try to minimize my time there.
I stumbled upon it entirely by accident when I was looking around for how to get rid of those fucking facebook emojis (F.B. Purity does that, by the way).
Social Fixer is another handy extension for Facebook. I use a combination of F.B. Purity and Social Fixer to make Facebook behave in a way more to my liking. Social Fixer is the most refined one in my opinion, but so far I haven't seen settings to disable emojis or add a 'logout' button to the navigation bar in it, so I use F.B. Purity to accomplish that.
Not the only thing. Facebook Purity has similar intent but different UI. Every now and then Facebook will do something that breaks one of them but not the other, so I switch back and forth.
FB Purity: Helps you filter out all the nonsense in your Facebook feed and page. Hate the Ice Bucket Challenge? Tired of Buzzfeed? Sick of the trending topics? They're gone. It's awesome.
Have you discovered the extra ponies, such as crystal pony form, various dresses, and nightmare night?
Also, not to hijack the thread, I do highly recommend the extension Fluff Busting Purity.
> anyone wish that facebook would let you set up a filter for "do not show me posts about: ______"
Check out FBPurity - it allows you to, among other things, set up custom filters to hide anything that mentions specific keywords
You can use this extension for your browser, FB Purity too. It does a lot of other nifty things to, like removing ads, sponsored content, tell you who defriends you, among other stuff.
Thank god for the FB Purity plugin. I could not use Facebook without it really. That combined with Adblock and other shields up tech means Facebook is actually quite nice to use.
Mark Fuckerberg is an even bigger scumbag than I thought he was.
-"Yeah that's cool but I bet you still use facebook and give him ad revenue"
FALSE. I use facebook, but I use the firefox/chrome addon FBpurity, which blocks ALL ads and commercial posts on facebook. Get it, and give Fuckerberg the "FUCK YOU!" he deserves. http://www.fbpurity.com/
nicely done! I just hope the people you've nixed don't have the potencial to become bigger contributors to your life down the line, I've known people to get there noses out of joint if they find you've defriended them without some obvious reason. kind of petty, but it can come into play if happenstance brings you into daily/regular interaction with them again.
as an addition
these are two good browser extensions to remove the newsfeed, ticker, ads and anything else excessive or unwanted from facebook. These combined with trimming the fat off of friends list really made it more of a 'tool' for connection like email or texting rather than a time waster. I even got rid of the status update bar, don't miss it!
You could do it for photo posts using the F.B. Purity ( http://fbpurity.com ) browser extension: http://www.fbpurity.com After installing it, copy and paste the following CSS code into the Custom CSS box on the extension's options screen (you need to click the Custom CSS header on the options screen before pasting it in)
span.fbPhotoTagList, #fbPhotoSnowliftTagList, #fbPhotoPageTagList {display:none}
its not so simple to do it for other posts, as fb dont seem to use specific id's or classes for tags on other posts.
I find it kind of manageable, I keep a close watch on my friend list, and with F.B. Purity you can decide what you want to see (and modify the contents of the page to a certain extent). Of course, there are stupid posts slipping through, but I ignore/hide them.
You know how we have RES? FB has FB Purity. I only see my newsfeed in recent order. No chat, no ticker, no ads, no extra crap on either side. I can filter out individual posts too based on text inside them. Don't know why more people don't use it. The author works harder than most people I know, keeping up with FB changes.
Edit: forgot to mention you can disable timeline with it.
FBPurity makes a world of difference in terms of blocking 99% of the annoying shit people post. I know it's somewhat annoying having to install a third-party addon just to get rid of those stupid app messages, but it is worth it.
Although, to Facebook's credit, they have done a better job as of late making it much easier to permanently remove those messages from your stream.
I hate almost all of the games and applications on Facebook. If ever I get a request, I block the application. I also use an extension called F.B. Purity to block a lot of the things I don't care about (like X is now friends with Y). Facebook also allows you to hide updates from specific friends so you can hide friends who constantly post junk you don't want to see.
The reasons I like Facebook are:
That it allows me to connect with almost all of my friends on the internet. Using real names prevents me from having to try to remember cryptic email addresses and trying to remember if I have them on one service or another.
It's kind of like a mini-reddit where I can post links from the internet (usually from reddit...[](/poker)) and I can see links my friends posted (usually from reputable news sources...[](/poker)).
It's great for organizing events (tracking who is or isn't coming, allowing collaboration space to hammer out details for events, etc). Even without using the 'events' functionality I've been able to arrange hanging out with friends just by posting as my status "Who wants to hang out tonight?"
Now if your friends bother you IRL to like their stuff and participate in their dopey FB games, I can see why you'd want to avoid that. FB can only be as useful to a person as their friends make it.
if you dont want to hide a "friend" completely, another option instead of hiding people completely is to use a browser addon filter like FB Purity http://www.fbpurity.com it lets you filter out specific words and phrases, applications, is now friends with, updated location via fb places updates, joined a group, likes, etc etc
>And when I did I just got annoyed at finding out my friends kept joining pointless groups. i.e: "Join this group if you watched this cartoon when you were young" or some shit like that.
you can hide crap like that, and more using a cool browser extension called FB Purity: http://www.fbpurity.com
