Set up connection. It depends on what IRC client you use, but you will need to provide information: >Host: irc.quakenet.org > >Port: 6667
You will naturally have to choose your nickname and provide other information. Some clients will for example ask for second, or third nickname choice in case of nickname being already taken (happens sometimes on reconnection as well) etc.
After you are connected you need to register your nickname. Check the output from irc.quakenet.org to see if you are connected successfully and if your nick is free. To register send: >/msg Q HELLO youremail@address youremail@address
You will receive confirmation email. Follow it up and you will receive your password.
Most clients allow you to send something on connect. Reconfigure your server connection to send on connect: >/auth yournickname yourpassword
Now it's time to join channel. To do so use send >/join #FULLCOMMUNISM
By now you have successfully registered IRC name on QuakeNet network and joined comrades. Now you can add channel #FULLCOMMUNISM to auto-connect/favorites channels as this option is widely available.
There is a lot more to IRC itself, I haven't talked about protecting your privacy and you will have to figure out UI of your client etc. but you should be fine for a quick start.
i first heard of boids here, on the personal faq for the creator of mirc. apparently he's no longer interested, because there are no longer links for boids.
the thing i liked most was how simple the rules were, nothing telling the boids how to flock, just rules on how close they wanted to get to one another. maybe one or two others, but that was it. and it worked just like the flocks of birds you see bouncing around in fields.
Internet protocol for chatting, mIRC used to be a good Windows client (most regulars use it through a shell account with something like Irssi though). Here's a popular server that you can try straight from the browser: https://webchat.quakenet.org/
A ringer is someone who plays for a team when they can't field 5 players. A scrim is the basic 5v5 format of CS:Go like classic competitive.
http://www.mirc.com/ Download this. It's a program for chat rooms. Make a nickname and join the Gamesurge server. Your gonna need to use two channels #csgoringer and #csgoscrim. The command to join a channel is /join. For example, to get into the ringer channel you would type /join #csgoringer. Join the ringer channel and either 1) look for people advertising for a ringer or 2) advertise yourself. I would write "ringer cent/east" because I live around the east coast. #csgoscrim is similar only it's players advertising for scrims. There is also the channel #csgotryout if you are looking for a team. Does that make sense? I can go into more detail if need be.
You can download it from the Dynasty bot on IRC. The packs are 88-91 on [DS]SaberRider|XDCC and you can retrieve them with
/msg [DS]SaberRider|XDCC xdcc send 88 /msg [DS]SaberRider|XDCC xdcc send 89 /msg [DS]SaberRider|XDCC xdcc send 90 /msg [DS]SaberRider|XDCC xdcc send 91
You can't use anything like webchat or Mibbit to download, so you'll need to get a real client like mIRC or kvirc.
If that's too much info, apologies; I wanted to cover all the bases.
Download and install.
Run.
mIRC options->servers->add-> input server ip change port
description
password if necessary
add, ok
file->connect
choose a nick
might have to file->connect again
IRC has long been a source for downloading all sorts of things, legal or otherwise -- it's a bit confusing to someone who doesn't understand it but the best way to describe it is a robust chat app with downloading capabilities.

When a new version is released, you can't use that http://www.mirc.com/news.html link as the subreddit will not allow you to post a duplicate for whatever reason. I ran into this issue when I was posting about irssi releases.

Thank you!
I haven't used IRC in years.
Under "File" at the top, choose "Select Server".
Hit "Add".
Under "Description" put whatever you want to.
Under "IRC Server" put "irc.freenode.org"
Port should be 6667 by default. Hit "Add".
When it's done loading and says you've connected, type "/join #pilots" and it should open a new window that takes you to the /r/flying channel.
IRC is basically the digital text version of HAM radio or CB radio. It's always present, but who is around to chat at any given moment is at their whim. And just like radio, everyone uses their own preferred method of getting into it.
The answer may surprise you.
If the entire Metaverse is free of cost, then actually, something is wrong. Horribly wrong. You can better understand this by comparing it to the Internet, and in most cases, just the Web.
So, no, interconnected content, just like the Internet today, doesn't have to be free of charge. But it is likely that the free stuff is going to be popular with many people, isn't it?

tl;dr If newer versions of OpenSSL are installed then mIRC will use those instead of the old internal version.

>The other finger command comes from the finger system familiar to UNIX users. On UNIX systems you can finger the address of another user to find out some more about that person. Normally this fingering will give you the persons home address, telephone number or other usefull info. This info is given to you by a central finger server and you need a finger client to get it. mIRC already has a finger -client- built in for a long time under Tools/Finger. If you specify a users address, mIRC will try to get some info on the person at the other end. The '/finger {nickname|users_address}' command is doing the same thing. (If you specify a nickname mIRC will try to find out that users address and finger it.) Mind the syntax difference from the IRC finger command !!
Sigh.
I've been watching anime too long. I have bluray-rip movies that are larger than my first two hard drives put together. I remember having to manually install 16 different codecs (not codec packs, individual codecs) so I could watch anime. Bittorrent has made you all soft and lazy.
But this is how we used to do it, and it still works, with some minor edits to make it easier for you.
First set up an IRC client. {http://www.mirc.com/install.html for the simple one, on unix I'd suggest irssi, mac... well, figure that out yourself.} Then go to anidb.net. Search for the movie/show you want to watch.
Look at the list of groups that have subbed it, and click on one of the groups' names. if they have a website and an IRC channel listed, go to their website, see if they have XDCC bots.
If they do, go to their IRC network, go into their channel, and request that pack.
Watch anime. Repeat.
SO, for summer wars, you go here: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=6249
and see that it's been subbed by a few people. Coalgirls' bot has been down for ages, and Cman is entirely torrents - go with arigatou.
Go to their page. http://www.arigatouhell.com/ and click on xdcc bots. search for summer wars. Go to their IRC Channel in that IRC client - #arigatou on irc.rizon.net type this Trigger: /msg [Arigatou]ReleaseBot xdcc get 463
Wait.
Watch your movie.
Ok I've started idling in #iptvGTA on EFnet; no eggdrop bots or anything setup as of yet, but that can come later if we choose.
To help celebrate the start of the channel, I'm giving away three 1-week accounts to IPTVExpress that my reseller has available thanks to the recent "downtime credits". The first three users to join the channel that want a week's access to Express just need to join the channel and make the request in the channel. First come first serve, and sorry I only have 3 available. The accounts have an expiry date of May 7th, so the sooner you join the channel the better!
If you've never used IRC before, the easiest way to join is to connect via this web chat link: http://chat.efnet.org:9090/ ( enter your desired nickname and for channel enter #iptvgta )
If you prefer a local client, one of the easiest programs to use is "mIRC" available here: http://www.mirc.com/ Simply install the client, and join an "EFnet server". Once connected to the server a channel list should appear, where you can just type in #iptvgta and join our channel. Any questions or issues just ask in this thread.
As I recall, my first modem was a 2400. Then we got a 14.4 and I felt like the goddamn king of Usenet and IRC.
Sidenote, I just checked and mIRC is still being developed!
Hey Decoy!
I've recently created PadderBot, and made it available for all WoT streamers. What I did was use a IRC client called mIRC. mIRC has its own scripting language that lets you create custom commands quite easily. There are a lot of very detailed mIRC Scripting tutorials, as its has been around for a LONG time.
It's much easier than coding a custom bot from scratch. You can download mIRC here: http://www.mirc.com/
Let me know if you need any help :)
As a sidenote, I heard there was some interest in having live chat. While I'm afraid that isn't possible on actual reddit without hacking the site somehow, does anyone have any opinions on IRC? It's not particularly complicated and we could probably get a server for that going easily enough.
Huh, weird...clear your cache, or try a different browser, or use a standalone IRC client like mIRC. Connect to server irc.kiwiirc.com, port 6667, channel #periwinkle or ##orangered

Posting instructions for connecting to the chat room by way or mIRC client. It's much nicer than using the web based client.
That's it.
http://www.mirc.com/faq6.html#section6-31
programming this as a script in mIRC wouldn't be hard, on the remote tab it would be something like this:
on :text::#yourchannel: { /speak $nick says $1- }
this should fire any time someone speak in the channel saying "Suchandsuch says message here"
I can't remember if mIRC ever built in a TTS function or not, but yeah.. easy way to try is to load it up, get on a server and just type /speak test message blahblahblah
The only problem I can see with this is that since the audio is more than likely going to be playing back on the default audio device, that OBS or xSPLIT will pick it up and send it to the stream, and the viewers will hear it as well.
Download and install mIRC .
Select a server from the freenode servers list
Once you are connected to freenode server type /join #sportsbook
for those who are new to irc http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/irctutorial.html you don't have to read through it all but it's good to know the basic commands such as how to join a server, join a channel and changing your nick etc. :) clients: http://www.mirc.com/ (windows) http://colloquy.info/ (mac)
I didn't mean to seem caustic on the question phrasing thing, just pointing it out.
The nice thing about IRC is you can join all of the giveaway channels - OH #duckpond is renown - it's probably the best. Just mind your attitude and don't let anyone piss you off, and don't get kickbanned. It's a sweet way to make some money, especially if you've got the opportunity to chill in the channel all day.
I recommend using mIRC to access Torn's IRC, you can set mIRC to notify you when certain keywords are mentioned so you'll never miss a giveaway or lottery. Although mIRC supports some pretty advanced scripting and will give you an unfair advantage in the giveaways (if so inclined), I strongly discourage you from doing it, even if you are diligent in avoiding detection. Took me six months to be unbanned once caught.
As for which to do first, it sounds like you're working on getting some income vs trying to get gym gains. There are only two benefits from having a PI and (1) is the happy, and (2) is the airfield (if so equipped). So imho, go for your money first. You largely don't even have to bother with playing TC while you sit in IRC and collect the cash (or items).
Consider spending some merits to get a bazaar - the cost of points will invariably inflate (as they already have with the expansion of the points market cap) and the value of a bazaar never decreases especially since they're tied into the actual item market now. He who has the lowest priced item in their bazaar commands the prime spot (far left) in the item market and usually sells first.
As for finding a spouse, it is hardly worth the headache. You'll connect with someone when the time is right. Just make friends in TC and you'll do exceedingly well.
step 1) download mirc -> http://www.mirc.com step 2) join server irc.tribalwar.com port 6667 step 3) once joined type /nick yourhandle to chane your name step 4) then type /join #ascend step 5) profit
You could always try the qwebirc alternative
irc2go is just the interface. The qwebirc is definitely a lot cleaner.
edit: Actually the best thing to do is install your own IRC client like mIRC and then direct it to irc.freenode.org #MechanicAdvice
IRC is Internet Relay Chat. It is like an instant messenger where anyone can join your 'Chat'. You need an IRC Client to get connected. Like this one here. In IRC there are servers and channels. Each server holds multiple channels. So it will come up asking you to choose a nickname and a server. Then once you have joined the server type '/join #yourchannelnamehere'.
Further help here
Good Luck!
The IRC server I figured we'd use is reddit's, If you don't have mIRC, it's a free chat client that's been around since the early internet days. Once thats done you connent via
/server irc.freenode.net
and do /join #40krpg
Already made a channel and everything so perhaps sometime end of this week we can meet up and see who will be actually playing, I'm thinking tomorrow 7pm EST should be sufficient if its not a good date for you let me know.
> How exactly does the whole Bitcoin setup work?
Could be the most broad and unspecific question ever asked... what specifically are you confused about?
> How do I get Bitcoins? They said something about a 'mining pool', that's all I understood.
You either buy them, mine them, or trade goods/services for them. The easiest way is to buy them, unless you have a desktop sitting around with a powerful graphics card - then you can try your luck at mining. Mining in a pool will give you much more consistent payouts than mining solo.
> And, um, I know that I can contact other interested parties via IRC, and I have a serviceable idea of what it is, but...I don't exactly know how to access it. Stop laughing! I'm largely self-taught!
If you're looking to trade for BTC join irc.freenode.net, #bitcoin-otc (this information is also in the sidebar to the right ---> )
> What the hell is a block?
Basically, blocks store the data of every BTC transaction that occurs across the entire network. The block chain is shared and downloaded by everyone on the network so that transactions can be trusted and verified as legitimate. It's a secure, distributed way to keep track of every bitcoin ever made and at the same time provides work for miners to do (generating the next block) in exchange for coins. This is how I understand it, at least.
I started computer programming when I was 11. First messing around with qbasic(very simple stuff in qbasic at that) then later messing with mIRC scripting. Even made a fancy video player for mIRC.
I got my first job working with PHP through a friend of mine, they hired me on at their company to do tech support, and knew I was trying to learn PHP. My job quickly was rolled into a developer position, and I stayed with that company for about 4 years, effectively launching my career.
Now at 27 years old, I am a full time free lance web developer, and have been doing web dev work for over 7 years now on a full time basis. I've been freelance for the last 1 and a half years. I also volunteer with an open source PHP framework, which in turn helps me get clients who have sites built using said framework. Free lancing has by far been the most successful part for me, and having my own business is one of those things I'm proud of.
You're gonna need a client -
http://www.mirc.com/ or http://xchat.org/
then follow the directions to connect to efnet. Im pretty sure it's in the default server list for both.
Then join #bearcave. it should be something like /join #bearcave
I might be wrong, because I haven't used either mirc or xchat in over a decade.
> it was coded intentionally by whoever made mIRC
That would be the (in)famous Khaled Mardam-Bey.
Incidentally, mIRC is pretty famous for being used as part of an unmanned airstrike system in Germany.
That's pretty versatile for a chat client. :)
I don't know how popular they are outside of the special interest channels, but there are still a few servers up and running. I found this list of the main servers, but I have no idea how active they are.
Was nobody on IRC in here? Some chat clients (BitchX, mIRC) supported special characters for color (Ctrl+K), Ctrl+B for bold, Ctrl+U for underline. You could even set the background (\x03[x,y]). To reset the color you just entered the \x03 character, also known as caret, without the numbers. It looked like this..
This could be easily implemented in any client, adding a new key on a physical (or mapping a different symbol on an existing key) or virtual keyboard is not difficult, you just need to wrap your text (as many have said, emojis are text, formatting is around the text) in these symbols and you're good to go. Oh and the client on the other side needs to display it. It has worked like 30 years ago in one of the first instant messaging protocols.
That's fine, most people times people new to IRC are recommended to use mIRC.
There's a guide for that here: http://www.mirc.com/install.html
The address for rizon is irc.rizon.net
Alternatively you can use the webchat, although in my experience it's less reliable because people close their browser and forget to open it back up (meaning we can't contact them).
You can find that here: https://www.rizon.net/chat
We could bring back Internet Relay Chat rooms as I have heard they are basically unmoderated these days. I was surprised to see this old beauty from my high school days still exists - MIRC
Internet Relay Chat is a service used on the internet.
just like you have a browser (eg. safari, chrome, firefox etc.) to navigate http addresses, you can get a chat client to navigate IRC addresses
there are some IRC clients that can open in your browser. as always, if worried about internet security, make sure your anti-virus is up to date and make an offline backup of your machine.
happy chatting!
Joining the IRC channel? You need an IRC client like mIRC or HexChat(which is free). With mIRC you can go to file->select server->add. The server is irc.speedrunslive.com and the port can be 6667.
Once it's connected you can use /nick <name> to pick a username and /join #supermetroid to join the super metroid channel. You can also do /list to see a list of available channels.
You can also check out speedrunslive.com for info about the community.
I think Hexchat is a spiffy IRC client: https://hexchat.github.io/ (if you want the actual program thing and not webchat - which is generally banned from most channels). Either that, or mIRC - http://www.mirc.com/ - works as well.
If you find an IRC network where people are all nice and want to chat without being awful to one another, then let me know.
PS: noeatnosleep is whoring himself spamming his network (which isn't nearly as nice as he makes it sound).
To clarify, before joining the room you have to authenticate to a GameSurge account. In the "GameSurge" or "Status" tab of IRC, it gives you a message: >Cannot join channel (+r): this channel requires authentication -- you can obtain an account from http://www.gamesurge.net/createaccount/
Once you create a GameSurge account, you can check your email for instructions to authenticate. You'll need to authenticate every time you boot up IRC. Though, if it's too much of a hassle, a lot of non-web clients such as mIRC or HexChat have a setting to automatically authenticate you.
Step One: Download an IRC client:
Hexchat Free (Windows XP/Vista/7/8) (Linux)
mIRC Will nag you to buy forever, but free (Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8)
Colloquy Free (Mac OS X 10.7)
Step Two: Join Snoonet:
By clicking on "Snoonet" and "Connect" in your client's server list, or by adding it manually
Server: irc.snoonet.org
Port: 6697
Step Three: Join channel #bodyweightfitness by typing "/join #bodyweightfitness"
Step Four: Change your nickname to something you want to be called (it should be unique, if someone else has registered that nickname, you'll be renamed "snoo21413432") by typing "/nick <yournickhere>"
Step Five: Say hi, ask any questions you like and tell us how much you deadlift.
Bonus Step: Register the nickname of your choice by typing "/msg nickserv register <password> <youremailhere>" making sure that you are currently using the nickname you want to register. This will stop anyone from using your nickname except you. Follow the instructions in the email and then set up your client to automatically identify when you log on (ask us in the channel if you need more help).
Hey, bud. May take awhile to get used to the trigger tags, but I will try my best to use them. I also think the only-upvote system is good for this sub.
I am positive the gentleman over at irc.tripsit.me would be happy to have us. It is a harm reduction network that will literally trip sit people. There is an #addiction channel, but it's mostly quiet and I am sure we could get our own #quittingkratom channel going. I am often on IRC as I work from home so I would be happy to idle and chat with anyone else that needs help.
There are plenty of channels people shouldn't go on that network, so maybe we should look on some other network? We can easily set-up a webchat or mibbit link directly to our channel so clients aren't even needed, though I am using the ancient mIRC. Freenode is a pretty common network, or we can use reddit's own unofficial Snoonet. I am a long-time native user of www.GameSurge.net so although it is entirely unrelated they would be more than happy to have us as well with less drug-oriented channels. Let me know and I will certainly idle if not help set it up.
Also, I appreciate your involvement in this subreddit and constant stream of ideas for it. I know you've got a lot going on, but I am happy you are still here with us contributing. Cheers!
Made an IRC Channel on QuakeNet so you easy could join through this web based irc client.
Just enter your nickname and #GettingDoug as channel then press join chat.
http://www.mirc.com/install.html A windows based irc
it is not just a chatroom, it was the first, kickstart of directly talking to anyone anywhere, and it still exists :) For more information check out this site: mIRC
you can join a chatroom about anxiety for instance, you don't need to contribute to the conversation if you don't feel comfotable to do so, you can just follow the conversations, and join in if you want.
You'll need a client - some way of connecting to the irc server. There might be portals you can use or you can download mIRC from http://www.mirc.com/ and connect to the chat room via that.
If you haven't done that before I should be able to walk you through it fairly quickly, drop me a PM if needed.
The IRC server I figured we'd use is reddit's, If you don't have mIRC, it's a free chat client that's been around since the early internet days. Once thats done you connent via
/server irc.freenode.net
and do /join #40krpg
Already made a channel and everything so perhaps sometime end of this week we can meet up and see who will be actually playing, I'm thinking tomorrow 7pm EST should be sufficient if its not a good date for you let me know.

i'm off-campus, but unless you're paying for the internet, but from my experience, you're going to have to weasel your way around, using non-standard ports. you will likely have to set up a proxy, and send it over smtp/pop if you only use webmail.

what's the irc for? i've got an asus rt-n16 running tomato w. optware so i could potentially host an irc server if i had people to mod/admin.
EDIT: lol, you're running a client, not server. much of the information still stands. i would almost be willing to set up an IRC proxy, but i need to make sure i can lock that shit down.
I would say download an irc client and get on the bondage/collarme/even xkcd has a bdsm room, chats. You will find all sorts of role play and connections there, you have to weed through the fakes but its far easier then spending a bunch of time with back and forth mail.
Windows user? Download mIRC
Then, when you go to connect for the first time, make sure to enable identd under the tab of the same name and put in your username. Some servers require this to be running in order to connect and I'm not sure if freenode is one of them.
Select freenode from the server list, or type /server irc.freenodenet in the status window and it will connect.
Once in, type /join #gunnit
More info
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. The client that I use is mIRC ( http://www.mirc.com/mirc.html )
The minecraft server is back up now, btw.
You'll need to use a client. For windows, http://www.mirc.com is the most popular. For other OS's, I have no idea.
If you're using mIRC, fire it up and fill in your info.
Click ok
In the status window, type /server irc.gamesurge.net
Once connected, type /join #reddit
There is also a java version here: http://gamesurge.net/chat/
Once connected, type /join #reddit
