Others have recommended Peel, which is good for TV related stuff, but not very customizable.
I much prefer AnyMote Smart Remote. It also has a giant database of preprogrammed remotes, but for all kinds of devices. And more importantly, you can make completely custom remotes, and learn buttons from physical remotes you own (if your phone also has an IR receiver like on my HTC One M8). Also you can make a custom permanent notification that sits in your notification list with quick access to six buttons of your design, or a floating remote. Basically everything I want it to do.
I made this remote for my Blu-ray player. The buttons were all preprogrammed from the database, but I didn't like the layout so I changed everything to be exactly where I wanted it.
Do you have an ir blaster? Link me : Smart ir remote-anymote
This remote is awesome, it will control anything with an ir receiver. Not just tv's cable boxes and stereos. I had this since my s3 on my notes and now my v10. It also has a bunch of widgets.

thats what i use works great, recent material design update and can even use it like a harmony remote with macros and stuff only real downside is the price
Smart IR remote by color tiger
got it when it was on sale, but it's like, 10 bucks now. Customizable as hell. Add remotes for anything, even make a smart remote to control different devices at the same time. Has options for macros, so you can have one button execute multiple actions, (turn on tv, change input and change channels on cable box...)
It's also integrated with Google now, so you can change channels by talking to your phone. I'm in the process of building the perfect remote.
This project has been rattling round in my 'brain' for a couple of years now. There has been experimentation, there has been failure. There has been tiny victories, but only this week did I solve the biggest bugbear and once done crack on with getting it all working!
So, the biggest bugbear: My living room is, by necessity, setup with a TV and a projector perpendicular to one another. This means on movie night that the sound is wrong. I finally solved this with the help of peverbeek and his Peace GUI for Equalizer APO. Whilst I don't mention this in the video, the orientation switch is macro'd in to certain buttons.
Once that was done I used a combination of Anymote, Tasker and Eventghost to get everything running.
Initial forays into this project taught me that you need to be checking states of things before running actions - for example I originally had 'play' set to turn lights off and 'pause' to turn them back on, but that works even if Plex isn't running so it quickly gets out of sync. The way I did it was to regex query the /status/sessions xml from the Plex Server to see if it contained either 'play' or 'pause'. This is literally the closest I have ever come to 'coding' in my entire life.
If anyone is interested please ask any questions. I'm quite proud of this setup but I think if you lifted up the bonnet you'd see some frightful things in Tasker so I'm also super happy to learn how to do things better!
Thanks

It's a bit steep, but it has all the codes for all my devices so far, and it works with wifi devices as well, such as my Roku and even my FireTV. The FireTv has to have adb enabled, but it actually works.
For the sake of confirming your numbers, the percentages for Smart IR Remote are about the same.
Similarly priced app, similar Play Store rating, similar download counts, similar category. We don't mind piracy that much either - we just hate it when pirates want customer support. Also, people sometimes contact us asking for a free copy for all kinds of reasons, and we've always given them a license key.
If by "remote control" you're referring to apps that let you use your phone as a TV remote, I use AnyMote myself. It's a little expensive as far as apps go, but it's worth it. You can even set macros that combine commands from multiple devices. Unlike a few apps you may find (though like many others) it uses a device's built-in IR emitter rather than requiring an external device. I believe they do make an external device that it works with though as another option.

In short, "Photos/Media/Files" is the generic category Google has given any app that wants to access a portion of your filesystem. I've had the app for years (back when it was named differently) and it has never done something malicious.
After several Samsung phones I switched to LG when they stopped including the IR blaster, those who aren't spoiled to it simply don't understand.
If you have a blaster and haven't tried it, I highly recommend Anymote a very straightforward, but capable remote app.
So its a bit pricy for an app but the app AnyMote is excellent. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy
You can create your own remote how ever you like it controlling multiple devices in one interface. Well worth the money IMO. You can even set up macros to turn off all your devices in one tap for example.
It's a little pricey but totally worth it.
Just about every aspect of the remotes and widgets can be customized and you can even combine different remote buttons into one single remote.
I had an htc one m7 google play edition back then. If i remember correctly, it was this app. But a much earlier version obviously.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy
These days my LG v20 I just use the default app that came on the phone.
This app blew all the other ones I tried away. Had widget support and you could create your own remote with just the buttons you wanted, needed: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy&hl=en
Too bad I don't have a phone that has an IR Blaster anymore.

Smart IR Remote from Anymote is one I used to use before my IR blaster died on my phone. It has an extremely large database of remotes and is growing daily. If you cannot find a remote for your device but have the original, you can teach the remote your phone and then share it in the database for others to you.
You can also program macros so for example, you get a call, it can send the mute signal to your devices, or you could program one button it it to execute tasks from other remotes much like you can with a Logitech Harmony remote.
Smart IR Remote - Play Store Link
To me, it was well worth the price, if you consider that you can use your phone as a smart remote, it is about the same as a generic universal remote, but much more powerful.
Your Android needs to have an IR blaster, obviously. And either of these would work:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tv.peel.smartremote&hl=en
There are more...
If you've got a phone with a built in IR blaster a good universal remote app is helpful for testing devices which don't have their original remote. I use this one with my Galaxy S5.
I bought Smart IT Remote Link and love it.
Speaking of lost remotes, see if any of the smartphones or tablets in your home have an IR transmitter.
I used this app, which I, uh, "found" on aptoide. It has a really comprehensive list of supported devices, and usually it includes every button on the remote and more.
Ok, i'm gonna bite: I want to try to do an experiment. I'm one of the devs behind AnyMote, and while our app has started with just IR support, it's now able to control over 20 different wifi devices too (from smart TVs to lights).
I'm going to give the full app for free to anyone willing to test and use our app for home/automation & control for any of their wifi devices, in a daily usage scenario. The app already has integration with Tasker, IFTTT, widgets, floating remote (chathead), notifications, etc. The possibilities are unlimited, and I'd really like to see what kind of scenarios people are doing so that we can improve specifically in those areas. If our app doesn't have support for your (moderately popular) wifi device, we'll add support for it.
PS: for the free app, email me at sergiu[at]colortiger.com
Smart IR Remote is very powerful. It's not the cheapest but I've it since my S4 and it works very well. It gets constantly updated and allows you to create your own custom remotes and macros. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy
No idea yet. Smart IR Remote looks promising.
$6.99 price tag though.
I'm partial to AnyMote. I bought it a while ago, but I think it was around $7. So it's a little pricey, but considering how much you can do with it, it's well worth the price.
Are you asking about IR remotes that work with an IR blaster? In that case try Smart IR Remote. It's expensive but it's worth it. I have yet to find a device it won't work with.
On a side note, I hear the Sense TV app is getting shut down on May 1st. Not sure what that means or why, but you may have picked the right time to ask for an alternative...
if you're willing to try a new app, anymote has always worked well for me. Though I dont think anymote can do custom remotes, the interface feels so much better, and I havnt yet run into a device it couldnt run (works fine on parents cable box, their tv, my tv, my roomates tv, and one in a restaurant near me)
(Guessing the guy with a negative review who said he had a v20 was using lineage without gamma kernel so.the ir blaster doesnt work)
Have you tried Anymote Smart IR Remote? I've been using it for years and it's always been excellent, and it even works with AOSP-based ROMs.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy
Peel sucks, but there are great alternative apps that make use of the IR blaster. Personally I think the paid version of Smart IR Remote - AnyMote is worth every penny.
Thanks for not forgeting and this is indeed a bad news to us. I normally use Smart ir Remote - Anymote to control everything, did you try this app?
Anymote is the best one I know of, and what I use on my note 4. I haven't tried using peel in years, but anymote is a million times better than my last experience with it.
That's what's causing this? I've seen a lot of posts on HTC phones, but this is the first I've seen on a Samsung, so it makes sense that Peel is doing it since it was used by both companies.
I've had Peel disabled for over a year when they started pushing ads to the notification tray.
I bought the fairly expensive but infinitely customizable Anymote. There's a free version that's quite limited, but the full version was worth the $8 or so it costs to not have to deal with the shitty mess that is Peel.
I use Anymote. You have to pay for the full version but it was totally worth it for me because I also use it to integrate with Tasker. It's just a database of pretty much every remote.
I've considered this app for android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy
I never liked the idea of pulling out the phone, wake, click app ... just to turn the volume down. But the idea of some real customization across devices is appealing. Of coarse your Yamaha and TV would have to be on your LAN for everything to work, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I have no idea if there is a mic in the app.
It's a great, but has limited support for certain devices. I can't use it with my samsung tablet anymore and I believe certain cell carriers aren't supported.
A nice alternative is Smart IR Remote
I use Smart IR Remote - AnyMote by Color Tiger. Can control anything I have thrown at it, even a cheap dollar store fan, and my christmas tree lights.
Edit for link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy
Wait a second... I have the paid version of the app from here which doesn't appear to have been updated since August. Is that app going to be updated or are you abandoning the paid version?
Peel is awful, Sense Tv is so much better. Why would you do this to us, HTC??!
I find this to be the best alternative. Unfortunately, it costs money.. Which I don't have very much of. :'(
i use anymote I have a Samsung TV too, and it works with that. Whats cool with the app is that you can program macros. So I have it set so that with 1 button it'll turn on the TV, sound system, and change HDMI to my chromecast. Also 1 button turns off everything.
I hated it when the remote would go missing and I was shit out of luck. If your Android phone or tablet has an IR blaster, I would recommend downloading Smart IR Remote. It's a Universal Remote built into your phone and you can program pretty much anything that has an IR receiver. I use it for my stereo system, every TV and projector in my house and at work, A/C and heating system, and a few other things too.
It's great if you want to go into a bar and take over the TV inconspicuously.
Send me an email at colortigerapps[at]gmail[dot]com mentioning your username, and I'll send you a test build of Smart IR Remote . We have had support for Hue for a year now, and AFAIK milight should work with our Limitless Led Lights, but hasn't been tested.
The linkbot sucks... and/or people use different names for the app on the phone vs the app in the store. This is the correct remote:

You should give Smart Remote by Color Tiger a look. It's so much more capable than Peel or any other I've tried (and I've tried all the current options). I really think you'll like it.
Hands down... Smart remote (Anymote)
Expensive, but does absolutely everything.

This is the best on the market. The developer is awesome and will help you if you cannot get it working.

/u/Darrkman's (sorry ahead of time lol) recommendation is spot on. The Spigen case he recommends is definitely very nice looking and provides good protection. While it was not asked of you, I still will have to recommend <strong><em>This gadget</em></strong> as well. 64GB model obviously. Super cheap, but feels like I paid a lot more.It snaps in place into your USB port securely so you don't have to worry about disconnects, and it is extremely portable.
I'll skip the often said and repeated great features you probably know of (e.g.camera). Multi-Window is an awesome feature. I love the chat-heads functionality that FB Messenger has, so being able to replicate it with other apps is a plus. The IR Blaster is an awesome feature. If you pair it with this <strong><em>app</em></strong> you'll find that you'll be hunting around your living/dining room a lot less for that one remote. Screen recording on the device is smooth as butter at 60FPS, 4K/1080p quality.
You'll hear a lot of complaints regarding software performance and it is a serious issue right now. That ultimately depends on the type of user you are though, and how you will use the S6. If you like to root and you opt in for the S6, hope you have an older firmware. If you do, cancel any OTA's, and look up the procedure. There is very little development for this phone. In some areas there is literally none. If you will not root, update ASAP, the performance will be greatly improved. When Android M is released for the S6 the supposed RAM and software issues will supposedly be fixed. I don't have the source for that statement though, so take it with a grain of salt. I could go on longer, but I don't want to write a college assignment sized amount of content here and I'm lazy as hell.
tl;dr: Get it if you love Samsung devices, and do not mind a possible caveat in RAM management. Do not get it if you like being able to fully customize your phone.
(edit: redundant line derp.)
I use this one for my Nikon.

Here is the comment linked in the above comment:
I've got the perfect app for you. It's one of my top favorite apps and it has a Tasker plugin built in to it. Smart IR Remote. You can use any button that you've programmed, on any of the remotes you set up, in Tasker tasks. No need to have an additional action in the task to open the remote app either. It will execute sending the IR signals without interrupting what you are currently doing on the device. It's great.

Do you have a mobile device with an IR blaster? I use Smart IR Remote with my tablet.
AnyMote is pretty much the standard. It takes a lot of configuration, but it's worth it.
There's an app called Smart Remote that should do what you need. Get Tasker and control the app using it.
Is this the app you are using?

You may have a few different options, depending on the phone you have.
-1. If you have an Android phone, note that most apps have widgets, that you can place on one of your phone's homescreen, and you can mix & match. Philips Hue, LIFX, Sonos, etc.. Some don't though, and Nest doesn't. I don't know about ecobee.
It really is insane the amount of customizations you can do, provided the apps support it. Here's a sample;
-2. If you have an iOS device, recently more and more devices have limited homekit integration. You can get one of the many HomeKit apps to control all of the supported devices.
-3. On both Android & iOS, there are apps that integrate with multiple connected devices. Since I'm one of its developers, I'm going to recommend AnyMote (link for android and for ios ). It currently integrates with more smart devices (including TVs, receivers, etc..) than any other similar app I'm aware of. There's no support for Ecobee yet, but there will be in the next 6 months, just as will many other devices.
The app also has homescreen widgets (Android), customizable notification widgets (Android & iOS), floating chathead-style remote (Android), etc.
Here's my customized remote. Controls everything and launches apps as needed.
I used Smart IR Remote - AnyMote https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy&hl=en highly recommended.
Thanks for this writeup. Sounds like a great setup. Is this the "Smart Remote" app that you use? By Color Tiger? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy&hl=en
I loved that on my Galaxy S4 that had built in IR.
And now I am doing some of the same stuff with the AnyMote (from the same developers) and my iPhone. I got it via their Kickstarter campaign for $60. This thing is AWESOME. The app it uses is amazing. So my iPhone can be used as a full-fledged universal and programmable remote control. I was surprised to see that not only does it allow fully configurable IR and some network commands via iOS/Android, it also lets you set up a voice-command bridge via Echo.
So I can say "Alexa, tell AnyMote to pause Sonos," for example, and that works too.
There's Smart IR Remote on the Play store, it costs money but has a lot more options for remotes.
Try Smart Remote https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy&hl=en I use it for everything, with my built in IR blaster. (By everything I mean my TVs and one fan)
Get something that will run Android (phone, tablet, emulator), and use this
I’ve been using Smart Remote since I had my M8, works pretty well although ymmv
I use this one I've recommended it before and people seem to like it it's similar to a logitec harmony
Wrong one, this one is the correct one.

Smart IR Remote (Android now, iOS coming in July) will have Wear support in a couple of months, and Apple Watch support a couple of months later. Recently added support for external IR Blasters like AnyMote Home, Global Cache means you no longer need an IR-capable phone to use it. JB Media support is also coming soon.

If you have an android phone. Droidmote works reasonably well. I use droidmote for mouse and keyboard control of netflix, emby, etc. I also use Smartremote as a universal control for my appliances. So a single device controls all my gear.
This does lounge HTPC, and a second setup with an android dongle. Works well.
