>I personally think it was caused by the Netflix app and it's already been fixed through an app update
How can one specific app cause this to happen? Many other streaming apps also take into account the Widevine level of the device into play. Not only that, third party apps, such as DRM Info also report the level. Mine says it's L3. And I highly doubt an update to the Netflix app would fix this. It'll take a system-level update at best, and a send-your-phone-to-Google fix at worst.
You can install DRMInfo from Play, which will tell you the Widevine security level of your device. If you're L3, then you're limited to SD playback. This was the case for the OP3 and many other devices, and for all custom ROMs, as far as I know.
Only L1 devices can play back content in HD. And only the factory, possibly with authorization from Google and/or others, can generate the crypto keys necessary for L1 status.
>Currently you will never be able to reproduce any HD content on Netflix: it doesn't depend on your internet connection. Oneplus 3 isn't widevine certificated (google's drm system) you can check with this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=it As you can see Widevine support is limited to Level 3 that means SD premium content only. For resolution >= HD you need a device with Level 1 certification. You could try with chrome with desktop mode enable, some time ago worked, but now at last for me doesn't. The first time you will launch a video, chrome will ask to identify uniquely your device: this is because chrome has widevine lib compiled and build-in, if it would work you could get 720p (better than nothing ).
Ok, found the answer myself. If anybody s interested:

6t has L1 support out of the box and so does 6. I have s9 which also has L1 which also can't play full 1080p unless i downgrade to a particular version of netflix app which was released in may iirc.
Edit: to check widevine level use this app
Use this app to check your widevine security level. If it isn't L1, then many paid* video streaming apps (netflix, amazon prime, youtube tv, etc) won't let you play HD, only 480p.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en_US
To check what quality Netflix plays at, you can search for a video called "Test Pattern" and it'll tell you the bitrate, bit depth, resolution and you can tell.
Check out this tool to check the DRM on your shield, it should detail your HDCP too. My TV is only 720p so I see HDCP 1.X despite the rest of my equipment being HDCP 2.2
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en
Edit: I also now realize you probably don't have a Shield TV yet so hopefully someone with a Shield and a 1080p screen less lazy than me can answer your question
Download the DRM Info android app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
Check what it says for the Widevine security level. L1 security (the highest) is required for HD streaming in most DRM protected android apps including YTTV. If yours is showing L3 level, then that's why you can only get 480p.
As for why a device would be limited to L3, common causes are rooting/flashing custom roms, or bugs from the manufacturer. If you haven't done anything custom and are showing L3, reach out to Oneplus support to troubleshoot.
Could very well be a result of the dreaded widevine bug. You can test your security level using DRM info.
If it's not L1 then you are affected.
There doesn't seem to be a fix for now; google is apparently working on it, but really nothing you can do about it rn.
Hey I would like to learn some more about the tv..
Can anyone installed drm info app on TV and checked the drm data?,
Is that TV widevine L1 drm certified or L3?
If it's really L3 widevine drm certified, you can't expect Netflix to work more than 480p.
Check drm info app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
Someone confirm it please :), as widevine L1 certification is very important
I suspect that this is related to a common widevine bug on pixel devices. Using DRM Info you can easily check for this.
Please check what it says under:
Widevine CDM > Security Level
Can't tell much about SafetyNet as my phone is not rooted. I tested Widevine with the DRM Info app and the Level was L1. Yes, charging is still very rapid, although it is being displayed as "slowly charging" on the lockscreen. The reality is that the phones charges super fast with the stock charger.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
This app checks your device's DRM licenses. In order to play HD video in most (paid) apps, you're required to have the Widevine L1 level security. If your device is showing Widevine L3, then it will not play HD video in DRMed apps. Most phones should be on L1 out of the box, but if you root or flash custom software, it may cause it to lower to L3. Some cheaper phones from Chinese companies don't bother with L1 licensing. And recently there's been a bug on Pixel phones that caused it to drop to L3.
Well, I got the phone recently a couple of weeks ago. I bought it in Amazon's local website (I'm from Spain). It got the update when I started using it, so I'm not sure if it's a January update or December's one. I checked my level of widevine using the following app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
> Oh cool didn't know that. I use mine to read ebooks and watch occasional YouTube so i can actually just stay on the stock. Going to flash it today then
You can check the Widevine Status with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=de only L1 allows HD Netflix.
Found this explanation on the drm issue limiting playback https://www.androidauthority.com/widevine-explained-821935/
DRM Info app lets you determine L1 or L3 security level of your device https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en_US
> Widevine Level 1
V20 is for sure.
Apparently, LG has been downgrading some devices from L1 to L3..?
You shouldn't have to override HDCP unless your TV has issues. I don't set the resolution to max on my system because I've had issues in the past with it, set it to 1080p. At home I have modified the Netflix plugin to only choose the highest bitrate and 1080p resolution because I'm paranoid about always having the best quality, I can post a modified version when I get home.
You may also want to check that your DRM level is Widevine L1 with this app.
My pixelbook reports Widevine level 1 (using DRM app from play store) however the Vudu app is, as you say, only allowing SD playback and download.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo check this app to see what kind or drm your device supports
Can you see if the phone has Widevine L1? Use this. I was going to send back my 5T in about a month to have the L1 stuff added but I might consider selling it and getting this instead.
It all comes down to DRM support. Not sure what the requirements are for YouTube tv but for netflix it's widevine support. Good overview here: https://www.androidauthority.com/widevine-explained-821935/
To get HD support in Android they have to implement widevine in the Android container running within Chrome OS, which is AFAIK a significant technical challenge (running in the trusted execution environment from inside a container/VM). I'm not sure if they have done so yet, I've seen posts indicating they might have turned it on in the Android container as of Chrome OS v64. You can check with this DRM Info app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en
If the DRM Info app shows widevine lvl 1 support in the Android container then the technical support is in place, then it's just up to the app owner to enable HD. If widevine is showing unsupported or a level above 1 then you'll have to wait on that to be implemented.
Re: timeframe, I'm not sure what you're talking about, android apps have only been supported on Chrome OS for less than 2 years.
>There doesn't seem to be any clear explanation (only speculation)
Most of this is covered in the thread you linked, read it.
Get the DRM Info app, and check whether Google Widevine is supported in your device. Here's my device
Netflix HD needs more than Widevine L1. It also needs to be certified by Netflix. It's a double whammy.
Download DRM Info from the Play store to see if they added L1.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
So just to make sure, you can check your Widevine level with the app DRM info - lower numbers are "better". If your existing box says you have some super high level or no level or whatever then services you're using probably don't care about Widevine.
Install Drm info and tell us what it says under widevine cdm. It might be that the drm features of your phone are not high enough, so these services that use widevine drm only go up to 480p on your phone.
Do you happen to have Netflix subscription? If you do, you could test it out too as it has similar drm solution where they block the higher end streams if you don't have right type of drm.
They've introduced widevine drm this year for the livestream. This means your device needs an integrated and working DRM protection.
Widevine has 3 levels, each with increased dependence on hw support. L3 is the lowest level and what you mostly find in low resolution streaming services (think netflix < 1080p) and works with software players like vlc.
L2 relies on the TEE (trusted execution environment) module in your system to get the encryption key and uses software to decode the Videostream.
L1 means everything is done on the system TEE module.
If you have an android based smart tv, you can try to run DRM Info app to check which level is supported on your device. If it shows L1 support then it's an issue with the DRM and you can try to clear/reinstall the app or contact support - otherwise you cannot watch live sessions any more :(
If you install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo this will tell you if your device supports Widevine (it should) CDM
Probably better to use the DRM info and report your findings:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo then check widevine. If it's L3, you got below HD resolution as max.
Here's an app that can check your Widevine level: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
If you see there that you're at L3, like me, that is why you are limited. How to fix it is the mystery.
How did you verify it is playing an HD stream? In netflix, search for "Test Patterns" and play one of the videos. It will tell you what resolution it's letting you stream at. I have no idea how to verify prime.
Try this app and see if it says Widevine L1 -- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
You can install custom ROM without rooting. So app that detects root will not be a problem.
Netflix have something to do with DRM I believe. There's an app on Play Store that checks DRM so that Netflix can play in 1080P https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
Check out this site for Android app compatibility on De-googled ROM.
According to the site, Messenger and Discord works without Google Play Services.
Also there's a open source project called MicroG for making apps compatible on degoogled phones.
Try to stay on custom ROM as much as you can. Your privacy really degrades when using a phone with Google Play Services. At least install Lineage/Graphene/Calyx and try out all the apps you need, if it really doesn't work then revert back to stock Android.
Hahah. Same phone.
I lost Widevine L1 support twice already and had to reboot phone.
Basically "L1" certificate means 1080p HDR support on Streaming services like Hotstar and Prime Video.
"L3" means 560p max streaming.
Install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
And later check whether "Widevine CDM" security level is "L1".
Let me know after that.
I can't tell anything is different when watching YouTube. I don't have Netflix but here's a screen shot from this DRM info app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
It's been affecting a lot of people's Pixels lately, usually cause by an update. But it's pretty random on who is affected. Other phones have had similar issues.
You can check your phone's current Widevine level using this DRM Info app and looking at Widevine Security level. L1 = great and highest quality video, L3 = bad, standard definition video only. Only affects apps that use the DRM (Netflix, Amazon Prime, YT TV, etc). Regular Youtube is unaffected.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en_US&gl=US
When the app is opened one of the fields will either show L1 or L3
Looking forward to hearing from you
Talked with u/dianlujitao about the issue, he pointed me to this app and found that I've worked with Widevine L3 which supports HD casting. It might mean a wider LOS issue than a specific device. Furthermore, from the Netflix end, they might be blacklisting LOS18.1, though low probability since it worked on previous versions. u/dianlujitao didn't know who I should contact to sort things out. Your help is needed
The Netflix app shows it in the settings, Prime Video has no such function. There are also other 3rd party apps which can show various device specifications like DRM Info. I actually recently returned my phone because due to a software error Widevine went from L1 to L3. It's not something you would be able to "install" yourself.
Make sure that's the issue before you go wiping hard drives. Download "DRM Info" from the play store and double check that is the problem. You'll need L1 Widevine for playback on Netflix.
If that is the problem, I think Bliss-x86 has Widevine DRM but it's been a while since I used it. Double check on XDA before installing and wasting your time
The shield is drm, and contains all the widevine shit. Why do you think rooted shields have trouble with pay sites like netflix, disney+ etc.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
install that on your shield
Is it stock rom on proper device (China rom on China device, global rom on global device)? Is it unlocked or rooted? Does Netflix or prime work? Check your widevine level here and post screenshot https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
skini ovaj app i pogledaj koji ti je widewine security level..
ako je l3, do mobitela, odnosno softvera ti je..
BTW prije bi riješio da si kratko zagooglao problem, nego došao na reddit rantati :)
Install and run DRM Info (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo). If it says Widevine Level 3 then that is why your videos are crap as most streaming services will only allow 480P resolution unless you have Widevine Level 1 and even then the specific model may need to be whitelisted as well.
I think 1080p content should still look sharp on an 8.4" 2560x1600 screen. The issue might be that your device doesn't support the proper DRM for HD in Netflix/Amazon (though my understanding was that Mediapad M5s were updated to support it... I know my 10.5 does) Download DRM Info from the Play store to check. You need Widevine CDM Security Level L1 for HD in those apps.
The other thing I can think of is maybe your internet bandwidth is too low. Those apps fall back to SD if there isn't enough bandwidth to stream in HD
Your phone is probably lacking some DRM prohibited in China. Use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en to check drm status
AFAIK it has L3 widevine drm but I can't find anything certain, could you check https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo ? And if you have netflix what's the highest quality you have?
Considering it.
AFAIK it has L3 widevine drm but I can't find anything certain, could you check https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo ? And if you have netflix what's the highest quality you have?
> Huawei nova 3i
Could be a Widevine thing (Netflix/Google DRM) if you want to check use an app like DRM Info which will tell you the Widevine level your phone meets. L1 is good and means the problem is elsewhere but if it's L3 your probably stuck with SD only.
Try out the Test Patterns videos on Netflix. Also, what does the DRM Info app say about the Widevine level?

If it says L1, it should be fine. If it says L3 while you haven't rooted your phone, something is wrong with the hardware DRM inside of the phone.
Here to confirm since a lot of people are noticing it.
The OnePlus 6, 6T, and 7 Pro (no idea on 7) all are Widevine L1 devices and receive 720p from Netflix (possibly others?).
Once unlocked, they are L3, with 480p max - I'm told a needed partition is now hidden.
App that shows Widevine DRM level
It's one huge reason not to go for this phone, sadly.
I've bought a boat and have taken to the seas...
It is because there is no Widevine L1 and L3 certificate check it using the app given below
Drm info: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en
What is Widevine?
Widevine is an industry standard to protect content as it's transferred over the internet and played back on devices. It uses a combination of CENC encryption, licensing key exchange, and streaming quality. Widevine has three level of security simply named L1, L2 and L3. A device should be certified according to its level to stream specific video quality. Widevine L1 and L3 is supported by Android certified devices and Chrome OS while L2 is not applicable since its encryption is not for video.

Off topic, but is there any chance you could check your DRM Info and see what your Widevine Security Level is please? I'd like to root my Shield but don't want to lose HD Netflix support. I've looked everywhere but can't find a definitive answer on whether rooting the Shield causes the Widevine level and Netflix resolutions to drop, as is the case on Android phones.
What does DRM Info (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en_US) show on your box?
Amazon Prime Video works fine on my Mi Box here in US. DRM Info shows CENC ClearKey, Google Widevine Modular DRM (L1), and Microsoft PlayReady are supported on my box. Someone here said it won't work if Microsoft PlayReady isn't supported (https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/8lfo61/amazon_video/dzghog6/).
Anyone that didn't update yet can say if before update this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo really returns Widevine L3 and after Widevine L1?
Just curious as some OnePlus 5T weren't shipped with L1 and that users are forced to send it back in factory for ish a week to get DRM update
It depends on your device. If it supports Widevine L1 hardware DRM, the high quality option will be 720p or 1080p depending on the title. If only L3 DRM is supported, both quality options will be 960x540 resolution, the high quality one will be just slightly higher bitrate. Netflix seems to use VP9 for mobile downloads and the bitrates are very low so it's even worse than the normal streaming quality. If you have an Android phone, you can check which DRM level your device supports with this app.
Just check with this app your wide wine level
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
All OnePlus phones (except oneplus 6) will play protected video (netflix, Amazon, etc.) in SD 480p quality because there isn't the right DRM license included in the phone. They have wide wine level 3 instead of level 1 required for HD.
There is an other easy test to see that, in the netflix app do you see the HD label near your video?
Example, do you see the 4k or HD label like below? If not then you are playing in SD
https://www.macobserver.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Netflix-UHD4K-label.jpg?x17760
Few days ago i connected my mibox to a 4k display and also I enabled uhd subscription.
First I also got tqm-pm-100, so I started to check the capabilities with
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
It tudned out the problem was caused by the hdmi cable:
- with display manufacturers cable I was able to select 4k60Hz resolution in mibox screen resolution options, but drm info reported hdcp1.x only.- with a third party short cable I was not able to select 4k60Hz, of course hdcp was only 1.x.- With a better quality short cable, I was able to select 4k60Hz and hdcp 2.2 showed up in drm info. Also the short cable came with mibox was also ok.
When you have only fhd subscription, you probably don't get much problem, because that works without issues usually, even with 4k display because fhd playback doesn't require hdcp 2.2. But with uhd subscription, you need to check your hardware setup.
Other devices may work better with lower quality displays too, because different devices may have different signal strenght on the hdmi cable.
Hi koshergoy. What I mean is that there are uncertified AndroidTV devices out there (e.g. Mecool M8S Pro W / L, others) that will look like Android TV but not support most Chromecast functions.
Netflix will work fine, but not Amazon Instant Video.
To see what your particular device is capable of, try this. There's even an Android TV version:
If Microsoft PlayReady isn't there, then Amazon Video will not work.
Use this app, if you see "Security Level L1" in the WideVine section, you're good. If it says L3, then thats a no go.
This will tell you:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
Mine is on L3 now too.
just install DRM Info and see
Install an app like this, it gives you a report:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
You need a computer with Windows (tested on Windows 10). If you don't have it, you will need to install JRE (Java runtime engine - download from here: https://www.java.com/fr/download/)
You will need to download then this file https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachments/netflix-certification-bypass-1-1-zip.5227359/ and unzip it to a new folder on your computer.
On the MoGo Pro, you will need to install DRM Info : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
Run DRM Info on your MoGo Pro, and take a note of this info as displayed by the app:
On the computer, go the folder with the files you have unzipped, and launch START PATCHER.BAT. You will prompted to enter the 3 values given by DRM Info as above (Brand , Product and System ID - watch out: all info must be typed in CAPITAL letters).
After a couple of minutes, it will create a new APK file in the subfolder "output". Copy it to a USB key, insert the USB key then into your MoGo Pro, and run the APK file. It should then install the Netflix app. You will find it listed with the other standard applications (don't use XTV or Kodi, it will not launch this new Netflix app). You will need to enter your Netflix account credentials and... game is on ! if you have a message that says the Netflix app is not optimized (error -14), ignore it.
If your TV supports Widevine L1, you should give Kodi Netflix plugin a try first (https://github.com/CastagnaIT/plugin.video.netflix) before switching to Netflix mobile app. You can use "DRM Info" to find out if Widevine L1 is supported (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en_US).
You can find more info here:
WideVine shouldn't be affecting YouTube in any way. Could you install this app and share a screenshot here? > https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en_IN
Can you check whether this device supports Widevine L1 DRM? You can use this app,
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&hl=en
You can check via DRMInfo App
You could verify that via DRM Info and report back for further clarification!
download DRM Info and check your Widevine version. If it's L3 (which is the problem) you cannot use Netflix and prime video. Download SafetyNet Test as well to check if your device passes SafetyNet, you wouldn't be able to use banking apps and other features if it doesn't pass.
If you want to go back to SJUINXM, unlock your bootloader and follow these steps.
Btw how did you change regions without an unlocked bootloader or custom recovery? The updater app prevents you from changing variants by throwing a "Couldn't verify update package error.

Q1. So was your Verizon LM-V600VM ever showing to have Widevine L3 before? Or is this first time you checked DRM info?
Q2. Your Verizon LM-V600VM is still on Android 11, right?
Some people seem to think that software updates and changes to Widevine (L1 or L3) are somehow related. I am afraid that they are not.
But it would certainly help if more people would frequently check DRM info so we could jointly try to figure what exactly triggers L1 to L3 downgrades. And even more importantly: what can we do to reverse it.
