I disagree. My phone has actually helped me stay focused on my routine for the past 4 years or so since I've used FitNotes.
Helps me keep track of my sets and automatically starts a timer when I put the set in. When I hear that bell I know it's time for my next set.
It can play a sound when it gets to zero.
Alternatively, FitNotes is a freeware routine tracker that automatically starts a timer when you mark a set finished and then signals when it's over.
If thou uses a phone of robots and not one of fruits, I point you to Fitnotes (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes). It requires no permissions and does not seek to swolest your personal data, but only to record and report your gains.
I use FitNotes. I've tried a lot of different apps and this one's bar none the most in-depth and intuitive to use. No ads and you don't have to pay for shit to get its best features. Couldn't ask for more.
As mentioned, FitNotes is really good. However, I wish there was an app that made working out in to more of a game, kind of like how Duolingo tries (by giving you hearts, experience points, friends, etc). I would love to feel like I'm levelling up and gaining stuff, like an RPG. Just adds an extra level of motivation for some people.
FitNotes. It has everything I need. Can easily be set up for any routine. Keeps historical data for all of your lifts in an easily accessible format, has a ton of built in analytics, automatic backups, can export everything to CSV, built in rest time. And it is totally free with no ads ever.
Here is the direct link the app in the Google Play Store. Feel free to ask me any questions you have on it; I have been using it daily since August so I am quite familiar with much of the functionality.
Anyone looking for an app to track workouts, build routines, record weights & sets/reps, history, etc, this one is near perfect, and I've tried at least 10 different ones: FitNotes
Thanks to the devs!
FitNotes. Very basic with all the essentials, no ads, No Account, Clean UI, Stats, Graphs. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes (for Android obv.) I use it just like you want to.
Don't if you intend to make money from it. There are already too many.
The app I use seems to do all your features anyway.
On team Android I have been using Fitnotes - Gym Workout Log. It allows you to put any exercises you want any number of reps/sets, and will run a timer between sets. Also gives some basic analysis/tracking.
FitNotes, been using it since I switched from WP to Android and like it a lot. There are no good fitness trackers on windows phone so switched from excel to this app, but it has everything I need (apart from perhaps an option to automatically increase weights or a de-load calculator) while maintaining a clean interface.
The FitNotes App is a fantastic workout tracker.
It's intuitive, lets me track all the metrics I value, offers a multitude of ways to view and interact with your data, it's free, and the developer has added features I've requested in the past.
> “No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” - Socrates
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes&hl=en
I really like this app to keep track of my workouts and/or plan ahead of time. Also has great calculators and graphs build in and it's FREEEEEEE.
I use FitNotes which has a volume tracker in its analysis section.
I know that Greg Nuckols' Training Toolkit includes a spreadsheet but I haven't yet bitten the bullet and bought it yet. Others may know more about that?
I use FitNotes (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes). It's not super sophisticated, but it's free, simple, and pretty streamlined. It doesn't have the SC stuff programmed in, but after manually adding the exercises, it was really easy to put together different routines, and see my progress and estimated 1RMs. I like the graph functionality. Plus, it doesn't require an account, which is what put me off of JeFit, Strong, etc.
My favorite app of any kind is FitNotes. I've been using it for every workout for 5 years, and it's exactly what I want in a workout app. Last I checked it was only on Android. I wouldn't even consider getting a non-Android phone just because I love this app so much.
This may be overkill for what you need, but I use FitNotes to track my lifts. There are many apps like it, but it has everything I need. I have also grown accustomed to it, so no reason to switch :p
HUGE fan of fitnotes.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
Can be pretty simple or if you like to analyze data and set up entire preset routines you can do that too. A lot of fun stuff. Highly recommend.
I have used fitnotes for years. It allows for custom exercises and workout plans. It will also track and calculate several stats for you including estimated 1RM
I'm a casual weight lifter and skinny dude. I frequent /r/gainit. I've been slacking the past few months, but my normal routine is as follows:
Track lifts with FitNotes (barebones tracking app, no "social" aspect, includes spreadsheet export)
I track my body weight sporadically on a google-sheets with a simple line-trend and a "goal" marked out.
I know it is probably not the solution you are looking for as it is a general purpose fitness tracking app and not one specifically for CAP3, but I would recommend giving FitNotes a try. I have been using it for a year and am continually impressed and recommend it whenever I can.
Feel free to respond here or DM me if you have any specific questions on using it as I would be happy to help.
You sound fairly inexperienced, that's not really how it works... What you are looking for is a proper workout program, not an app.
Best app is Fitnotes though. I've tried like 5-6 different apps out and Fitnotes is by far my favorite.
Fitnotes
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
You can spend a little time setting things up to your liking and then it's super simple to use. Ad free, no pro version (I'm pretty sure), overall a high quality app
I like FitNotes for logging all my gym workouts!
You personalize your workouts, it's all automatically backed up on your Google Drive and it has a timer for you!
Fitnotes, love it more and more. Very easy to customize, I made excercizes like Planche push ups exercise and then I increase the weight for harder difficulty versions. Quick export to csv or it's own format for backup.
Because it hasn't been mentioned yet, I use FitNotes as my in gym notes to record what I do and then re-log it into TSR. I also use Google Spreadsheets to plan my workouts ahead of time.
I'm 6'0 and started lifting at 145lbs. It's going to be a total learning experience, so the best thing you can do is find an app to log progress on. I like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes&hl=en_CA
Start with the bar, understand how to properly move the weight and get the form down. Start sliding 5-10lbs on either end when you're ready and feel it out. I'd say you want to find a range where you can do 5-8 reps.
Fitnotes is the best for logging workouts. Takes getting used to but it can do anything. Also it doesn't offer any programs but you can add in custom workouts and exercises.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
I have 454 workouts logged in this app. It makes backups and can also export csv files.
You could try FitNotes, it's simple but efficient. It can also sync your data to Google Drive and export it to a spreadsheet, as well as setting a timer for rest between sets.
I have been using FitNotes and it is decent. Not the most beautiful but it makes it easy to track a whole bunch of metrics which I like.
I use an app to track my reps/sets/weight. FitNotes for android, it's free, adfree, and full of good features - it automatically calculates and graphs volume. Otherwise calculating volume is just Reps * Sets * Weight.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
Calisthenics is a good alternative. Gymnasts have really strong tendons.
If you're on Android, check out this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
You can export workout routines and logs if you need to uninstall. And you can use the share function to share your workouts. Pretty convenient.
These mostly seem cardio-centric. For weight training I have used fitnotes https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes for the past 2 years and its been perfect. I can track my progress, use the built in timer between sets, export my data to dropbox or drive, etc. Highly recommended.
I use FitNotes to track my workouts. I have my phone with me anyway, so it's quite easy, and the graphs over time are cool and motivating. Also it notes a little trophy when you set a new PR.
In a previous (and brief) attempt at weight loss, I used Lose It. I'm afraid I'm not currently using it, but I hope you find some friends who do.
Speaking of other apps: I don't really like how MFP handles strength training exercises. I've been using an app called FitNotes to track my lifts. I particularly like that FitNotes provides some analysis and graphs. Does anyone have other app suggestions?
FitNotes on Android if you want to check it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes&hl=en
Highly recommend. Can track workout volume, total reps, total sets, estimated 1RM for lifts over time, total workout volume, body part breakdowns, etc. Also, has never errored out on me and extremely quick to input exercises. For free.
Shameless plug for FitNotes. The app has a timer that automatically starts when you record a set. Set it for 45, 60, 90 (whatever) seconds, and get your next set started when it beeps at you.
Fitnotes: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes&hl=pt_PT
You can create your own exercises, including the bodyline drills and warm ups. All your reps, weights and times are logged and graphed so you can check you progress.
Bit of a learning curve, but it's very flexible and powerful once it's setup to your liking. Also completely free with no ads.
I'm a huge fan of FitNotes for Android. Very thorough, automatic graphs. Takes a little time to set up initially, but repays that time tenfold.
Also, any time you feel discouraged, or feel like you're not making progress, just remember that wherever you're at is someone else's body goal. Where you're starting from is where someone else would kill to be at. Everything is relative. Also, I find focusing on actual strength to be far more objective and less crazy-making than focusing on how your body looks. How you look and what you weigh changes based on the day and on your mood, but watching the numbers trend up in your lifting log over time always feels rewarding.
Also, keep a lifting log. It's impossible to keep track of your progress without it, and it's highly motivating and useful for setting goals. I use FitNotes but there's a million apps and a notebook and pencil are great too.
I've always enjoyed the simpler apps which focus on just tracking lifts, basic timers, notes, estimated 1RMs, some pretty graphs and CSV exports.
For Android, I used Fitnotes. It's by far the best app for me, and it was free.
For iOS, I've been using Fitnotes 2 for the past few months. It's backwards and forwards compatible with Fitnotes for Android, but it is a $35 lifetime purchase. I felt that it was worth it since I have Fitnotes data going back to 2016 and it's fun to look back at the journey.
I use FitNotes for this. When I log a completed set, it starts the timer. After the last set, it starts the timer and advances to the next exercise. I have 45 seconds between sets.
But the shorter durations you've got up there suggest that Interval Timer is what you might like.
I use fitnotes on android the free version has most of the things you need the full version is like a $5 on time thing. He has an equivalent ios app but it is more expensive forgot the name cause I do not use ios devices
Add music. For me, I like vocal music like Pentatonix or Straight No Chaser. It's clear and warm and has a beat and is not overwhelming.
I keep track of my exercises in FitNotes and I log after each set and I have FitNotes set to run a 60 second timer between sets for a rest.
I've been using FitNotes as my go-to workout app. You can choose which day to copy on the day you want to workout or choose from one of your routines. Also, there aren't any ads with it so it's been a nice experience.
I highly suggest FitNotes.
It works as a workout tracker. The database is completely customizable with everything you need. Off the top of my head:
Nothing comes close to the functionality of that app. I switched to an iPhone 13 Pro in January but my old OnePlus6 is now my gym-phone because nothing compares to FitNotes, not on the play store nor on the ios app store.
If you're on android, I use an app called FitNotes. It's amazing as it can calculate your 1RM, sets, and plates needed among other features.
Thank you as well... that was what I was searching... yeah, well... what do you get if you mix an IT-Guy with Fitness, it will result in elaborate Excels and Power-BIs because just tracking progress is not enough... you have to analyze it methodically...
BTW > I use Fitnotes. What I like it has an easy data structure and gives you a CSV Export to the cloud.. and you can use your own categories and exercises.
I personally use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
I used it free for about a year and recently paid for the full version (one time fee)
Very simple to use, very useable without paying
FitNotes is only available for Android and there aren't any plans for an iOS version at this time unfortunately.
If there are other apps by the same name then they aren't affiliated in any way.
Sorry about that.
You are mistaken, this subreddit corresponds to the Android only application FitNotes, it has an average rating of ~4.5/5 stars.
By App store, presumably you are referring to the unrelated IoS app of the same name? This has significantly less reviews, and a lower rating. Similarly, it's reviews appear to mention the complaints you have mentioned.
FitNotes!
I've been using it for years and it's been fantastic the whole time. Very lightweight, does auto cloud storage, and the dev is helpful.
I am using a free app for my android phone that has no ads and doesn't require any subscription. It has a nice poll of workout exercises to create logs. Not to mention the splendid analysis!
FitNotes - Gym Workout Log
I've been using Fitnotes for a while. It will allow you to create exercises and routines from scratch, and record them by different stats like weight, reps, weight and time, time and reps, etc. It's the only thing I've found works well for kettlebell work. Also records cardio and comes with a decent library of exercises built in. Can't recommend it strongly enough.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
I use FitNotes. It's easy to use, and does all the fancy graphs. You can quickly check your history of the current exercise, which I use to check if I should increase the weight.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
I like FitNotes a lot. Very clean, and the developer is very responsive. Backs up to Google drive as well. Definitely worth a look.
The FitNotes Android app for tracking your workout and tracking your body. No fuss, easy to use (which is especially important while you're in the gym) and lots of analysis options.
Switched from Android to an iPhone and am really missing FitNotes.
Anyone have suggestions for a similar app on iOS? Not a fan of anything I’ve found so far. I just want to log my lifts and cardio. I don’t want any workout plan bullshit.
Closest I’ve found is GymHero but it doesn’t do cardio. Asked this before and people suggested FitNotes for iOS, but the only thing they share is the name, it's a completely different app.
Maybe fitnotes will be useful for you? You'd have to enter the workouts manually at first, but then it should be near auto-pilot assuming there's some repetition on the program (disclaimer: i don't nor ever have done Strong Curves) but seems like a good generic app. I usually use it when I need to take a break from 5-3-1 for whatever reason.
If you already figured out your workout routine. How many sets and reps.
Best to get the Fit Notes app
It will track your stuff and show you graphs, You'll see your progress which is damn great.
Are you referring to this fitnotes for Android? If so, I am not having that issue. I am using it every day to track my workouts on nSuns 5/3/1 LP and it works exactly as intended.
I use FitNotes on Android. It's not prefect or the nicest looking, but it's the best functionality-wise I've found on Android. I used to use the Strong Lifts app, but I'm running a PPL program now and their app doesn't allow you to add other exercises so I switched.
I've used FitNotes for the past year tracking every workout and its amazing for analyzing. Powerful analyzing tool to see volume, max reps, rep records, weight etc.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
I just searched on the App Store on my iPhone and got 2 results for something called "Ultimate Fitness App - FitNotes", but after looking at the FitNotes on Google Play I'm pretty sure it's not the same thing. Bummer!
I'm in the middle of developing a website/mobile app to track progress in pretty straight forward steps but it's nowhere near finished yet. I made a post over on /r/fitness self promotion Saturday if you want to check it out.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/comments/3dq351/selfpromotion_saturday/ct7y4eo
Besides that, I've been using FitNotes.
Link for the lazy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes&hl=en
It's definitely one of the best workout tracking apps. Very versatile.
I only wish the developer would update it to the Material design standards for Android apps.
Just wanted to throw out that I am working with these guys to provide data and was the one who recommended they post here. I know there are a bunch of people here who workout and use CGM's so we should be able to provide them with some great data!
If anyone weight lifts but doesn't track their workouts, check out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
I've been using it for a couple weeks and it's by far the best fitness tracker I've found.
What are the best apps for keeping track of your lifts?
I've been using fitnotes https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes&hl=en which has been good enough, but I was hoping for something that has a designated workout plan where I follow it, enter what I lift, and it tells me what I should go for next time.
I like Fitnotes for Android.
FitNotes to keep track of my workouts.
Link for the lazy, FitNotes.
If you guys have an Android phone, REALLY awesome app is FitNotes.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes&hl=en
and thanks for the sheets /u/vstlockdown
Free and awesome!
I use FitNotes on Android. Very simple UI and and tons of tracking
App - FitNotes
Clean, simple, customizable and almost complete
No ads and no sign up required

Fitnotes on Android. da bomb.
Personally I just use Fitnotes
Don't see the benefit of using a band/watch or w/e.
FitNotes has been working very nicely for me.
FitNotes is a perfect app for Logging everything you do in the gym!

I highly recommend the Fitnotes app. By far the best tracking app I've used and I've tried most of them.
FitNotes, forever and always.

After OP ascends from 5x5, he can use Fit Notes
FitNotes 100%. Play Store Link
If you have an android you could try fitnotes. I always use it to track my workouts.
2nd this. I always mention FitNotes when an app question is asked
Programmer here, while I don't have any personal experience working with Android, or the Play Store for that matter, I have heard the barrier to entry is pretty easy.
For you creating an app specifically for what you want it gets a little tricky. There are things such as Appypie that make it easy. There is also a download called Android Studio that can help you out as well. Again, I have never used either but have heard good things. For someone with no programming experience it might take you a while which would lend me to suggesting already existing Android applications for your needs:
FitNotes (Play Store Link)
Progression (Play Store Link)
These do literally what you are describing just in slightly more "complicated" format (they aren't difficult to use).
Hope that helps.
I personally love fitnotes, before that I just used google keep, one note for each workout.
Signal boost for Fitnotes. The best tracker around. A guy from here made it right?
I am iOS now, but FitNotes was always my favorite when I was on Android.
For Android users look nowhere else: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
There are great free apps without subscriptions.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
The only workout log app I've used that didn't get in the way: FitNotes for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes&hl=en_US&gl=US
Ab hier fing meine Reise an.
Also bloß keine Scheu.
FitNotes for Android. Unfortunately it doesn't look like there's an Apple version.
If you're looking for an app I really like FitNotes.

Serious lifter here. I find fitnotes the best for logging workouts. Dev is super nice and responsive.

Not the same app, but a pretty good one for Android:

Ease of use.
FitNotes is really simple and easy to use, also has graphs and calendar and such
I always recommend Android users to try out FitNotes.
FitNotes is Android only. Important to keep in mind since OP mentioned iOS. Play Store Link.
FitNotes is my go-to app on Android.
It's a fantastic app that's completely free without ads.
I've been using FitNotes. It was the first app I tried and I love so far.
Are you looking for an app to track exercises or one with programs? https://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/comments/5b2pzu/monthly_apps_gadgets_and_gear_megathread/?ref=search posts here's a thread from the monthly post that collects the best responses.
If you're looking for an app that already has a routine programmed then look at https://stronglifts.com/5x5/ for the SL 5x5 app.
If you're looking to simply plug in exercises for a routine you're following from the wiki then I highly recommend fitnotes. This is the Android version but they have an iOS one as well.
I use FitNotes
I use Fitnotes. I think it's great, basic and easy to log between sets. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.jamesgay.fitnotes
Fitnotes is quite good.
I use Progression and FitNotes (made by a Redditor I believe).
MFP, Garmin Vivosmart, and Diet Dr Pepper.
I also log my lifts using Fit Notes.

Great question!

Fun facts about n0wei
If you find a good program you can use Fitnotes to track it in your Android.
It tracks it in a calendar so you can look back and see what you did and even copy a previous workout to today and then modify it as you go if you increase weight or reps from before.
I love using it! I've used it regularly for months now and the only complaint I have is that it doesn't come with pre-loaded routines, but it's a free app so that would probably be asking too much.
