Also, SlickVPN's entry is http, which redirects to the root https website. Update to https to make it work correctly.
This includes SlickVPN Core ThunderNews should no longer have monthly cap issues like in the past.
No catch. Our SlickVPN product has been really successful so it allows me to move some margins around and offer occasional sales at lower than normal prices.
I am also hopeful that better prices can help grow the entire usenet industry. Share usenet with your friends. Grow our community!
This is a very important point. Using tranceroute, I can see that from Calgary (using cable from nucleus) takes 14 hops to get to Private Internet Access' seattle node. 10 hops to get to SlickVPN's Richmond node (and 10ms faster). Is my best bet to just keep looking around until I find a node that has the least number of hops from my location (reported via traceroute)?
3800X AIO X62 Kraken, X470 Prime Pro from Asus.
Idle is 44C, voltage kicks up to 1.5v max, average is 1.4ish, but dips below 1v when idle.
Issue is what apps are pushing it to not idle. You need to kill the background apps doing the deed. For me, it was uTorrent and SlickVPN that idled in the background. Killed them and was good.
Also installed the newest chipset driver from AMD and set the power plan to balanced.
44C is warmer than I'm used to compared to the 2700X tho. Waiting for an update.
In the meantime: sleep mode whenever the PC isnt in use.
Any feedback on the Ghost Path VPN that is bundled with NGD? I currently have a very inexpensive yearly plan with Newsdemon that includes SlickVPN but Slick is rather slow and not really useful for things like BBC iPlayer. The vpn bundled with Newshosting was better.
Thanks for the info! Maybe this question is a bit out of scope for the current post, but why can't I use the provided SlickVPN credentials to login on the SlickVPN website/OpenVPN auth? I dislike the SlickVPN client and would therefore like to use the vanilla OpenVPN client with SlickVPN's *.ovpn files, but this doesn't work. Any ideas?
I'd write the support cause the site with the offer is showning this right under the deal: Privacy is Freedom! All NewsDemon accounts come with added SlickVPN protection.Browse your newsgroups anonymously and worry-free knowing that no one can see your real IP address.

I noticed they have a better sale here:
Also, how does their VPN compare to Newsdemon's?
Update: According to this, they have more servers and countries than newsdemon's current offering. I wonder how the speed compares though. From what I understand, newsdemon uses SlickVPN, which should be fast. I've read one speed complaint on TweakNews' client.
You have to login to the members area and activate the VPN add on service. If you are using the VPN while using Usenet, it makes sense to select a server location close to the Usenet server location you are using.
-For example if you are using the NewsDemon NL usenet location, you should use the SlickVPN server located in the NL.

It's a legal thing ;) As for the SlickVPN, you can try it for 30 days, and if you're not happy you'll get your money back. I'm on a 500/500mbit connection myself so I don't get full speed. But I got over 100mbit on the closed server (Amsterdam)
I download all my TV, movies, and music. I cancelled cable 2 years ago.
I used to torrent, but stopped because of fear of tracking, lawsuits, etc.
Now I use Usenet. I pay $17 per month (I think that's Canadian $) for NewsDaemon (or NewsDemon). It's unlimited downloads, I'm only limited by my Internet plan (300 GB per month, but *unlimited between the hours of 2am and 8 am). When I was torrenting, I would get max speeds of about 1 Mb/s, but normally around 500 Kb/s.
Now with Usenet, I average 2.9 Mb/s, and all my downloads are direct from servers around the world (not P2P where you can be tracked). All servers are connected via SSL.
NewsD(a)emon also gives you access to a free VPN service, SlickVPN. I only use it to mask my online activities on occasion, when necessary, as well as giving me access to different Netflixes from around the world.
Their privacy policy seems intentionally vague.
"Although we do not record, monitor or store any logs for any customers usage of our SlickVPN products, we do keep the following data: Length of time of the connection Timestamp (date and server time) of the connection to SlickVPN"
So.. basically they are saying, we aren't logging, but we do log.
No need, just download PIA and turn it on to the server that's closest to you and you're good to go. I think SlickVPN is even cheaper, but, PIA has the best reputation by far for sticking up for users. It's very popular.
EDIT: If you're MEGA paranoid, go to Walmart and buy a GiftCard and trade it in for time. No name required.
Check out any of these. I use SlickVPN because it's included with my newsgroups service, but have friends that recommend NordVPN or ExpressVPN. If you look around you could probably find coupon codes for a free month or so too. Anything is better than nothing.
I think you'll have to test services out for yourself as guessing what speeds you'll get on the VPN is extremely dependent on routing, location, and which device you're using to connect. Routers can be horrible with speeds due to CPU throughput. I use SlickVPN and I routinely get 50-75mbps
Newshosting bundles the Highwind owned ipVanish (but it is "free" only with the yearly plan), which I found to be very good. Highwind reseller Newsdemon, which is identical to NH for usenet, bundles a VPN they own, SlickVPN, which is not so great. The difference is the number of servers in desirable locations, speed and whether or not the servers have been blocked by services such as BBC iPlayer. SlickVPN is usable for bittorrent, which is dog slow anyway and unusable for accessing regional content. For that I now use the excellent smartdns service, SimpleTelly.
I think it includes a VPN as the site with the offer is showning this right under the deal:
Privacy is Freedom! All NewsDemon accounts come with added SlickVPN protection.Browse your newsgroups anonymously and worry-free knowing that no one can see your real IP address.

I've tried 3 in the past week
ExpressVPN -> fast but expensive, was getting about a 5-10mbps loss on my normal 80mbps NBN
SlickVPN -> cheap but slooooow. Couldn't get above 15mbps
IPVanish -> just as fast as ExpressVPN, maybe a tad slower, but about half the price using a currently running promo code (no I don't get kickbacks from this, it's the first result if you google IPVanish promo code and go to that blog then click 'Visit IPVanish')

I couldn't get this to work either. Using SlickVPN with either their client app or openvpn on windows 7. One option is to set up a Ubuntu server on a VM that does all torrents / sabnzdb stuff and have that behind a VPN constantly. Plex then runs outside of PIA, as you can remove the VPN from your main rig. Not the solution you were after but a good one all the same.
Glad to hear about a new GUI. Weird they don't have a screenshot right on the mainpage to show it off.
Anyone with any experience using the SlickVPN service they have a promo for? I have been using PIA for a few years but for $28/year it seems like a good deal. Need to research how they are with speeds, logging, private info and normal stuff but maybe someone has some first hand reviews.
Edit: Wow! Looks great.
It heavily depends on the provider and the destination server. I personally use SlickVPN, and with about 20 of their servers I get as good if not better latency and throughput. My main desktop is pretty much always connected to one of them, and if I'm downloading something large I tend to switch to the closest VPN exit point and watch the speeds increase drastically sometimes (I'm talking 2Mbps to 50Mbps after switching depending on location.)
I used SlickVPN, and was entirely satisfied with them, their speeds are great, and the amount of connections in as many countries as they have were great. I'd highly recommend them if you're looking for a VPN, I had previously gotten them through NewsDemon too, when i wanted to watch Hulu, American Netflix and Pandora from Canada. I now use UnoDNS, which is a bit easier and will work on all of my devices, including WDLive and such.
But if you're asking how slick is, they're great....
I don't have any VPN advice outside of setting up your own personal servers. I use SlickVPN when I want to connect through a VPN but I'm not sure if that one would be blocked also.
Sorry about all these weirdos wagging their fingers at you in here pretending to be your high school guidance counselor
Tried to run SlickVPN using its macOS client, which I believe was based on an implementation of OpenVPN. It was utterly unstable, inexplicably disconnecting at random times, without explanation or feedback from the client. Had exactly the same behaviour as you're describing when I last tried it with Mojave. Had no solution, as the client had not been updated in years - just cancelled my VPN service as a result.
I was curious enough about this that I went back and configured OpenVPN on my J3455 to finally put this to the test. Using my SlickVPN provider, I'm getting 180mbits down @ 84% OpenVPN thread utilization with AES256CBC. I can push 230mbits up and it goes to 91% OpenVPN utilization.
My VPN provider isn't the best so I think they are the bottleneck in being able to get more downstream performance. My current WAN provider is 500/500 FTTH.
I think for OP's use case, a J4105 would be a good fit. It won't do gigabit VPN, but they stated they don't need anywhere close to that. The single threaded nature of OpenVPN does allow it to access extra boost frequency easier, as the Turbo profile on most Intel CPUs favors smaller single threaded bursty workloads. J4105 bursts to 2.5Ghz, should be more than enough overhead for what OP needs.
I have a 18 months subscription that ends (if I don't renew it) on November.
Can I subscribe to the Unlimited Access + SlickVPN VPN access for Seven Months for $15 so that those months are added to my subscription?
The seven months sub is recurring?
Regards.
The VPN service provided with the Newsdemon account can only access a small subset of SlickVPN gateways. When I tried to use it, the service was too slow to be useful
As a Usenet service Newsdemon has great completion, great speeds, great retention, excellent value for money
> which plan I should go for?
Yearly unlimited. I'm on my third year
For my particular use case I really like SlickVPN and think its great as a free addon.
I'm not sure if I'd be breaking this sub's rules by saying exactly how I use it, hopefully if I say there are certain Linux iso's not available where I live but SlickVPN gives me access to them I will be ok.
Its speed is more than good enough for me, even connecting to servers several thousand miles away I get more than enough bandwidth for my needs.

The client isn't the greatest but its functional and mobile apps are needed for it to be really taken seriously however there are ways to share it without too much hassle to devices that do not have a client or app for it.

Perhaps u/greglyda can also confirm that the Vital Connect VPN that comes with Usenet Express is the same service with a slightly different client?
Did you get an update to this?
I initially used the SlickVPN windows app when I want to use my VPN, then I decided to try OpenVPN as its open-sourced and more well known, however I'm continuing to get the same certificate request as your original question. By clicking outside that window that pops up, I'm able to connect to the server, but I seem to keep getting bumped off occasionally.
Already got this working with Openvpn AS, so I'm not sure what Wireguard offers extra? I read that it's a new protocol, privacy concerns still exist and many VPN providers do not support it yet. Checked Windscribe and SlickVPN and both don't offer Wireguard at this point, as far as I can tell.
You can either opt for SlickVPN or UE, both provide good speed, security and are easy to set up. But I personally recommend SlickVPN as I have been using it for almost a year and I am pleased with its incredible speed.
Thank you for your reply!
According to , SlickVPN is part of The Five Eyes of surveillance, and an Enemy Of The Internet. So I will not be going with them since those are some pretty big red flags for me. I'm happy that it works for you though :)
I wouldn't recommend a free VPN because of security reasons and they're limited and untrustworthy in nature. You can try out SlickVPN, they offer services for as low as $10 a month and $48 annually and you can use two different IP's at the same time as well . Definitely worth a try
I wouldn't really recommend a free VPN for security purposes. You can check out SlickVPN, a very reliable service and easily better than any VPN i have used in the past. You can check them out here:
You should totally check on SlickVPN if you want to browse from different countries. They offer IP's of over thousands of countries and allow activities such as access to torrent browsing and downloading and Netflix.
Based on your requirements, you should totally try out SlickVPN. They charge $10 per month for their service and offer unlimited bandwidth, IP's from over thousand different places and blazing fast speeds. Would definitely recommend this VPN.
To get a free VPN wouldnt be the best option but you can try cheaper alternatives like SlickVPN. They have an upto 60% off offer ongoining right now, check them out here:
iptables is not running and I haven't installed any other firewall...
The config I'm using is this one
I've also tried editing my own to match their .ovpn settings but same result.
Hey Rafficer,
Sorry if this is a bit strange, but I am rather new to Reddit, and Fedora. I like the challenge that Fedora poses, and I like learning, however, a lot of sites I need are blocked in my current city, even Github. The Great Firewall of China is killing me.
Do you have any idea of any good VPNs that I can use in China that still haven't been taken down - i.e. blocked, I don't care if they are difficult to learn, but I need something.
Currently my list of blocked VPNs include: VPNGate, ExpressVPN, VyprVPN, Mullvad, AirVPN, VPNBook, ProtonVPN, NordVPN, SlickVPN, Betternet, Psiphon, and Thunder VPN. I even tried to see if some work for mobile, but nothing yet. I have nothing else I can try without buying, and I do not want to buy just to be unable to use it.
Thank you very much for all the help. I appreciate the TMUX advice as well. I will give it a go in a bit as well.
Ok. I’ll try to be patient. Am also waiting for reply from SlickVPN regarding VPN issue too. At this moment, a little regret, disappointment, Knowing that earning back trust for ND is important now, such matters should have been better handled. Not impressed. Sorry.
I sent in a support ticket, they respond once and the status of the ticket is changed to closed immediately. Same with SlickVPN. Further queries on the same ticket seem to get ignored, because the status is now closed. Greg does seem sincere in fixing our queries. Let’s see whether he delivers.
I assume you mean logging into SlickVPN’s members area. I did have the problem. The email is not the email given. I had to contact support to resolve this issue.
The email + password is only used to connect to VPN servers, not for logging into SlickVPN’s members area.
A heads up, I’m not able to play games on the iPhone with SlickVPN switched on. I’ve contacted support, they said it’s intentional, claimed that they have opened the TCP and UDP ports for my account. It still doesn’t work and there’s no further response from them.
I get ya. It's the "why" the VPN is disconnected that's the question. Blocking the stream would probably cause a different series of errors than than the endpoint dropping its end of the tunnel. If your side hasn't timed out the tunnel and restored normal routing, then you wouldn't expect to have any other connectivity. Depending on the VPN client, it can be hard to get them to let go. For example, with SlickVPN, if I try to connect through an active block, I have to reboot to restore normal networking. That's the VPN client. It could be lots of things, including Comcast.
Sorry, they are my block account, and I pay an additional fee for SlickVPN. Neither the VPN client nor bills mention core vs. pro and I didn't know Slick had two levels of service before reading this post.
Wish I could help more.
Hey, glad you got yours sorted. Are you aware of a step by step guide to this anywhere? I've just bought a years subscription to SlickVPN, and I've installed OpenVPN on my Pi but I have no clue what to do next
Somewhere in the Newsdemon account dashboard, there's a link that says Activate VPN. It will give you a new email/username and password for SlickVPN. The email they gave me didn't work to log in to though, I had to use my real email address.
I found SlickVPN through this link which I'd say has some credibility.
The last week or so it seems much more stable.
Have you tested AirVPN or IVPN? Both have leak protection that seems to be bulletproof. I use both but prefer the location of AirVPN servers and the client they provide is outstanding.
I can recommend this website for direct answers to privacy questions directed to the major VPN providers. Just ignore the affiliate links.
Just found this link which reports extensive leak testing of VPNs and the only six which did not leak on Windows were AirVPN, FrootVPN, IVPN, Mullvad, Perfect and SlickVPN. Some big names like PIA, BlackVPN and NordVPN were shown to leak. This might cause a lot of users to switch from their present VPN!
I have had no luck with getting this done for free. Most web proxies are detected and blocked by sites. You really need a good vpn. TunnelBear is a pretty good one that is simple to set up. I personally use SlickVPN. Depending on what site you're trying to access, you may still have a difficult time. I can't even watch Netflix in the USA when connected to vpn because they think I'm trying to watch from outside the country.
IMHO a VPN that claims to not reveal it's users real IP addresses when it does is worse than using no VPN at all; I say this because you're then lulled into a false sense of security than you otherwise would be; you'll maybe visit sites; download; use torrents thinking your IP address is not potentially being captured when it might be which puts you more at risk than if you were not having the service in the first place; it's like your paying to be put at risk IMHO. AirVPN; FrootVPN; IVPN; Mullvad; Perfect Privacy and SlickVPN were the only VPN's out of 29 tested that didn't reveal the users IP address; the full test results and methods of testing can be found if looked for in this subreddit and google
If you think this is a small or inconsequencial issue then please google and research the various consequences of people having their IP addresses traced back to them
From what I've seen based on some quick searching I've been doing today (for this exact same reason), SlickVPN is somewhat sketchy with crap customer support but a solid client, whereas PrivateInternetAccess seems to be a fan favorite among Torrenters, is affordable, but not as "fancy"?
And I've been using SlickVPN for torrenting and get great speeds on my FiOS connection. They only cost me $48.00 a year and have great privacy policies; something that is very important if a studio lawyer wants to track an IP back to a user.
So there's three different suggestions in one thread from three different people who obviously did their homework but came to three different and personal conclusions.
I use both open VPN (with SlickVPN and CyberGhost) and also CyberGhost client alone. I haven't had any problems with SlickVPN on OpenVPN other than disconnect. But with CyberGhost there are leaks really often, either with their client or with openVPN.
I was going to recommend the same article. Based on this I recently chose SlickVPN - it's quite alright. Most people recommend PIA but it's like twice the price and terrible interface (judging from screenshots on the web).
The article is cool because it doesn't say "This VPN is the best!", it let you choose your own from a list of VPN clients where probably all of them are good.
I Use SlickVPN, I get it as an extra with my Usenet account from NewsDemon.
It costs US$11/month ($7.50 for the first 3 months) and gives you unlimited Usenet and a VPN that explicitly allows torrenting.
it's a good deal if you are interested in Usenet at all, and want a VPN for torrents and/or usenet.
Hmm...never tried any free vpns yet but recently Opera Browser integrated a free VPN into its browser that you might want to try out.
Currently, I've been using Private Internet Access for a few years now and the speeds through VPN have been decent. Also a huge plus is their many many server locations.
Previously, I've used NordVPN, SlickVPN and StrongVPN under promos but eventually stuck to Private Internet Access.
I'm using SlickVPN. It's hit and miss really. The portuguese server is still working but other locations may not work due to the VPN crackdown by Netflix (e.g. France is not working ATM when previously it worked).
OK, so why would the FBI be after SlickVPN?
I do see that shows "990 x 660". Maybe stuff is just broken. Time will tell.
But then, the FBI could refresh the canary ;) Unless it was GnuPG signed. But not if they don't have the private key.
But how would any of us know? And that's the point: There's no way to know about providers. You just need to partition trust enough that it doesn't matter.
Forgot to ask how accurate is this comparsion chart. For example in torrentfreaks "Which VPN Services Take Your Anonymity Seriously? 2015 Edition" written in November it says that SlickVPN does not log session data, yet in your chart is says they do. I am just curcious if your doc is accurate, updated or if you have better info about privacy of VPN providers. I do not know who is mistaken in this case :)
Very appreciative of this comparison chart. But it demonstrates how little I know about VPNs. I got here because I received an email from touting SlickVPN for 10 +years+ for $40.00, with free renewal after 10 years. Wish I knew if anyone has experience good or bad with Slick VPN.
Partially posting this because I'm trying to figure out what's the catch? What is the downside of this deal?
At least the CORE plan is a starter level plan, but it's still normally $8.33/month.
The reviews on SlickVPN don't seem bad.
There must be a catch! Give me all the reasons not to buy in to this.
That doesn't surprise me, I imagine their server load is high meeting demand from the UK alone and imagine it would rocket if they made their services available world wide.
My guess is that they use a blacklist of known VPN exit nodes which they then block, so you could try a different provider. Obviously not a great solution for yourself if you already have a VPN subscription but perhaps something /u/LehmannDaHero could consider whilst trying this out.
For what its worth I was using SlickVPN on 2015-11-28 / 2015-11-29 to watch the UK Championships.
Newsdemon does have a bad rep, but $14 for 3 months of unlimited downloading with 2700 days of retention is hard to beat. I'm not a power user, so I haven't had them cancel my account yet. Newsdemon also offers a VPN for $4 a month to its customers though SlickVPN.
I can't seem to get this to work either... I am using the SlickVPN client which has an openvpn config section. Used XFlak script to grab the address', and then added each one as route commands using my internal lan ip (where PMS server and VPN are running).
But I still cant access from outside local network. How do we know which subnet mask to use? I have tried 255.255.255.0 (my actual subnet mask) and 255.255.255.252 (subnet mask reported for tunnel connection when using cmd > 'ipconfig /all')
I actually helped one of the IT guys at SlickVPN re-write their guide for Ubuntu (and similar).
See if this helps. Hint: It will :)
Namaste
Edit: Actually if you're using tails....I don't know if tails uses Gnome for the network manager stuff. Maybe KDE or Xfce or another? Go to your package manager GUI on Tails and search for openvpn to find the right one if the guide doesn't work (it's designed for the GNOME network manager)
Ah ok. Would the config file from my vpn (slickVPN) contain this among other lines:
remote 443
auth-user-pass
The file is called "" ????
I'm a Newsdemon customer with the Black Friday plan. I pay through a PayPal subscription and it looks like my payment info is intact. $6/month for unlimited usenet and VPN still seems like a good deal, though I'm also quite convinced that they are a shady operation. I'd love to find another provider for unlimited usenet that has a better track reputation and better customer service for maybe $2 more per month. Newgroupdirect has had unlimited yearly deals for $60 (I think I may have even seen $55/year at some point). That may be my next move.
I will say that Newsdemon's SlickVPN service is absolute trash. $2/month is almost too much to pay for such a flaky service.
I have the same issue, however fuck playing with a VPN lol. Start your VPN, login, then disconnect from your VPN. After that you should be able to play.
I'm using SlickVPN and the moment I can login to Glyph I disconnect it and play like normal.
> Why does your chart say it does?
We didn't make the chart... LeoPanthera did earlier.
As for SlickVPN... checkout their Privacy Policy. > we do keep the following data: > Length of time of the connection... > Timestamp (date and server time) of the connection to SlickVPN... > SlickVPN collects certain information automatically from visitors to the site which includes the IP address...
Interesting. I think I'll create a new VLAN on my network with a different subnet. I have an extra interface on my Windows machine that I can connect to the new VLAN. I'll configure my Windows machine as the default gateway of the PS4 on the new VLAN and internet connection sharing, this should route traffic to my Windows machine and out my original VLAN interface. If this works, then I should be able to use my SlickVPN windows client on my computer and the connection sharing should use SlickVPN to connect.
Going to utilize WinGate.
No, I'm not sure about the hash algorithm. I'm going off this auto-dated SlickVPN guide:
I was talking with their customer service, but they gave up since they couldnt figure out what was wrong. LOL.
I consider myself fairly good with setting this sort of stuff up, but cannot figure this out for the life of me.
I REALLY appreciate your help!!
I had the Newsdemon package a month ago. SlickVPN was pretty good. Used it mostly for breaking location restricted content and they had decent speeds. Didn't care much about their logging policies since those don't affect me. For 4 bucks a month it's the cheapest monthly subscription VPN you'll find.
1- you can activate and purchase games that arent available in your region.
2- you can be safer* when downloading torrents and such
3- you can sidestep the throttling/restrictions on a variety of websites that are imposed by a large portion of ISPs
depending on your vpn service you can just run a piece of software that will connect you to your vpn service and server of choice on demand. with SlickVPN they offer easy setup guides for either OPENVPN or their own SLICKVPN software. they also give information on how to configure it on the router's end a-la-DDWRT.
