Haha, good link friend!
I agree with the OP though, Fibit™ is a great product and company; I have always enjoyed their items and their great quality.
I generally like to purchase mine from http://www.fitbit.com/ or even on http://www.amazon.com/
I feel it is a great gift for friends and family as well. Happy redditing!
They don't provide a margin of error statement but it's pretty clear by reading their entire page devoted to best practices that your HR can and will be impacted by external factors.
"Like all heart-rate monitoring technologies, accuracy is affected by physiology, location of device, and different movements. To get the most accurate heart rate reading during workouts, follow these three steps:"
Doing sugar equivalents by using high fat food is retarded.
Edit: not only is it criminally stupid, but also flat out wrong. The water bottle has 33g of carbs in it ... and ONE Chocolate eclair bar has 30g.
edit2: except it seems they count "sugars" and not "total carbs" ... which makes no sense. All in all they compare 410 calories of refrigerated sweetness vs a 150 calorie drink. And the examples only seem to get worse from there.
It's a pedometer, tracks steps, distance and estimates your daily calorie ~~consumption~~ expenditure. Also tracks sleep, specifically sleep cycles, and wakes you up when you are in the light stage of sleep (it can figure this out easily with a motion sensor- in deep sleep your muscles are paralysed and you don't move at all.) Syncs all this up to an app on your phone where you can track your progress.
Sounds pretty identical to the Fitbit Flex but much much cheaper.
Hello, everyone!
I hope everyone has a great summer. Please find me on Fitbit or MFP! Fitbit MFP
I loooooove that we’re Rivendell. If I could live in a fictional world, it would be Middle Earth in a heartbeat.
Edit: Probably should’ve mentioned this is my first LostIt challenge. I set a pretty lofty goal that I’m now beginning to second guess, but hey - let’s hope!
My stats: 28F, HW: 165, CW: 156, GW: 120-124 I’m in northern Indiana. ☺️
Whatever happened with that campaign? It looks like the link is no longer active: http://www.fitbit.com/fitforfood. There is a new campaign now (https://fitforgood.fitbit.com/), but I'm curious how many meals did they actually end up donating in the original one?
http://www.fitbit.com/foods/Jumbo+Dill+Pickle-In-A-Pouch/67331
It's only 30%. Pickles taste good and are filling without impacting your caloric intake. It's not good to fill your diet with them, but they can fit a place in supplementing sodium content (if your diet doesn't have enough - this is actually possible) and acting as a snack to help eat less.
I don't really like Dave Asprey's method of sales or delivery. However...
I'd like to see some actual science on why bulletproof coffee or adding 1 tbsp unsalted grassfed butter and cocount oil to your 8oz of coffee is bad. It's saturated fat.. which has been shown to help a lot of things.
1 decent Source from Tim Ferris's site: http://fourhourworkweek.com/2009/06/06/saturated-fat/
1 tbsp kerry gold butter: http://www.fitbit.com/foods/Butter+Pure+Irish+Unsalted/14589187
It's much better than adding sugar or skim milk to your coffee. Dave may be a scam but i don't think butter in your coffee is a 'con'.
Here are the Nutritional Facts for Soy Protein Powder. Here are the Nutritional Facts for Blood
Which one is a better Protein shake? Also what do you think will happen to all the sugar and carbs in the Soy Shake? Will it turn to fat?
Drink Blood.
According to their own website, it uses bioelectrical impedance, which is less than ideal. Worry about eating the right amounts of protein and calories and keep lifting and your bf% will go down regardless of what the scale tells you.
>As you can see, I was right
Lol, OK BUDDY. You're not "right" about anything.
Sorry if I didn't pull my nutrional information from the same website you did, but all these sites show 160.

Are you sure you aren't looking at the double stuffs ? Buddy ? And I'm pretty sure there are 30 oreos in an 18 oz. box = 3 rows of 10.
"Fitting Macros" does not literally fucking matter after you've reached your intake for the day. That's the whole point of the program ! FYI - Sugar = Carb = Macro.
Edit: Looks as though there are 3 rows of 12.
Edit: Fitness & Diet Guru /u/TheGoldenHall has retracted his comments.
Regarding the intimacy - your boyfriend probably thinks you're still beautiful and sexy. I know that doesn't really change the way you feel, but it's true. You could just say something along the lines of "I'm sorry I act kind of strange when we're intimate but I'm having some issues with my body that I'd like to work on."
My girlfriend is actually trying to get in shape right now and she basically told me she wanted to lose a few pounds and she'd appreciate my support. She ordered this - fitbit - and should actually receive it within the next day or two.
Along with /r/fitness you could also check out /r/loseit and /r/c25k if you're interested in running at all.
Got a high ankle sprain coming down from a rebound yesterday. Don't want to get out of bed but I'm hungry.
Pence beat Dee Gordon in the fitbit challenge by over 50k steps
Is it just me or does clicking this link to order the KNBR CD show a blank space for the Donation Amount when opened on mobile?? Online it says it's $30 for 1, $50 for 2, and $70 for 3 copies. Good option for those who can't make it to a Dugout Store at least.
Have a great birthday Zen!
I've had 3 FitBit Ones (I'm clumsy and break/lose things) and just got a FitBit Force.
I love it. It does more than just track your steps, tracks how many flights of stairs you take. Tracks your sleep. Gives you pretty, shiny graphs. You can set your goal, and it will help you get there. You can see when you are active vs. inactive. It's great motivation to get up and walk around, and burn a few calories.
On top of that, you can add friends... and then get into a "step" battle.
I think it's pretty great. :) You can be my FitBit friend if you'd like...
Hello teammates! My name is Elise, I'm 26, and live in upstate New York with my lovely boyfriend and two kitty babs. Ever since I got out of college (2012) I kind of started slowly gaining weight and it ended up way higher than I've ever been. @_@
I just graduated with my Masters, which was eating up a lot of my free time. About two weeks ago I got tired of my lifestyle and started to make goals to be more active (putting my gym membership to use) and counting calories as best I can. I was up around 216, and I've dropped down between 210-212, and BF is down 1% (according to the scale, at least!). As much as I'd like to drop all this weight like it's hot, and eventually be 160, I think trying to reach 199 is a more attainable goal. It'll be nice to fit into some older clothes and just feel a little bit healthier!
/u/Soahtree is my spirit animal (and longtime friend). They let me know about this awesome opportunity and the fates (or robots) put us on the same team. :D
You can friend me on Fitbit if you please. Looking forward to being healthy and awesome people with ya'll!
People tend to treat it as as a vegetable from a culinary standpoint while it is a carb source from a nutrition standpoint. Similar issue to potatoes, although potatoes have more vitamins and minerals in them.
It also gets a bad rap because it is processed into high fructose corn syrup, which adds a lot of calories and carbs to many processed foods. Much harder to get fat off of sweet corn than off of processed foods with high fructose corn syrup in them.
I wasn't aware Kerrygold butter was a thing. Now that I've looked it up, I'm still not convinced it's anything but a marketing tactic. They're advertising it as "organic" and "grass fed", but neither of those things can be confirmed on an analytical basis, as far as I am aware.
I looked up the nutrition panel for Kerrygold here
http://www.fitbit.com/foods/Butter+Pure+Irish+Unsalted/14589187
And then I compared it to the unsalted Kroger brand butter in my fridge. The differences are as follows:
Calories: same
Total Fat: 1% DV difference
Saturated Fat: 4% DV difference
Cholesterol: Same
Vitamin A: 2% DV difference
It isn't science at all, it's just marketing and labeling. Eat your normal generic butter and save your money.
Thanks. Here I have the FitBit Flex...it helps you track your steps, sleep, with the app you can track food, water etc....gives you an idea of calories burned and taken in etc...they have different types. We also get together and do competitions etc....
Hi everyone! I'm a 21 year old female, turning 22 in early September. This is my first challenge and I'm excited to be a part of Team Junebug! I have always yo-yoed with my weight and have struggled with disordered eating in the past, but this time is the first time I've been losing weight in a healthy way by sticking to keto.
I'm also a recent graduate with no job so I do a lot of sitting on my butt being unemployed things. I've been trying to be productive by becoming better at French and learning R programming, but it means I don't move as much as I used to. Still, I try to move as much as I can, and I look forward to losing as much weight as I can with y'all this Summer!!
Also, I'm pretty diligent about MFP and worship my Fitbit, so I'll share my profile here. MFP and Fitbit. Add me!
Fitbit does this, I have the Fitbit Charge and it tracks my sleep.
It also has a 'silent alarm' feature where the tracker vibrates to wake you up.
All the settings are configurable on the Fitbit website and in the Fitbit app.
Pretty sure there's other alternatives, but this is what I use.
The Fitbit Flex is water resistant by itself:
> Flex has been tested up to 1 ATM meaning it is sweat, rain and splash proof. However, the device is not swim proof. We also recommend taking Flex off before showering because, as with any wearable device, it’s best for your skin if the band stays dry and clean.
You're lucky too - it's not rated for swimming.
Check this to see if it helps.
https://help.fitbit.com/customer/portal/articles/1230068-about-sleep-tracking
Also, go into the settings via a web browser and check to see what your actual sleep settings are on the band.
http://www.fitbit.com/settings/device .....then go to sleep tracking.
They are designed to be worn all day and track your activity like calories burned, steps taken, heart rate, and sleep patterns. The alarm is just an added bonus. I'm actually dying to get one but there are a lot of different brands and models so I'm waiting it out a little to get the best one. Nike makes them as well, and Garmin, and 5 other companies. I think fitbit is one of the best and should have a new model out soon. You're a students, do a little research and pick one I like :). That would be awesome to solve that sleep problem.
Fitbit actually stopped selling the Force because of bad rashes that some users were reportedly developing. I've had mine for about 2 weeks now and I'm starting to develop one, so I'd put a hold on the search until they announce the next generation of the Force, or whenever (if, ever) Nike finally creates the Android version.
Nutritional value of propylene glycol. Note that this is for 100 grams, or about 3.5 ounces. It's basically nothing but carbs, but from what I can glean from the [Wikipedia page])http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propylene_glycol) it's all sugar alcohols which do not raise blood sugar levels. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here, as I'm certainly not a nutritionist.
Also according Wikipedia propylene glycol is 27 calories per teaspoon and does not raise blood sugars either.
As others have stated, I too doubt that by vaping you could injest much in the way of sugars or calories and the sweeteners involved are neither fructose or glucose and therefore won't raise blood sugar.
Your body has to spend calories replacing the skin, so the net effect is negative, which wastes energy on making the proteins, heating, etc.
Chicken skin provides 3.5 kcal per gram. The human body has a density of about 1 gram per cubic centimeter. Suppose you bite off 10 strips which are 0.5 mm thick, 2 mm wide, and 15 mm long, the total volume is 0.15 cubic centimeters, so their caloric content would be about 0.5 kcal.
I assume the registered caloric content of food accounts for the energy cost of digesting it - the chewing, the lifting the food to your mouth, the producing stomach acid and bile, the peristalsis of your bowels, etc. Chewing gum costs 2 kcal per hour more than doing nothing, so if you loss from that should be less than 0.12 kcal.
Good morning, Team Valentine! My first challenge so I'm looking forward to being a part of the team. I lost 60 pounds many years ago by just cutting out carbs, whites, and sugar drinks (and light exercise). The past few years, however, have resembled a lopsided yo-yo - up twenty, down ten, up fifteen, down ten. I managed to pack about 40 pounds of what I originally lost back on and I hate how I feel.
I'm on MFP as jjwinc and here's my Fitbit URL
Looking forward to the extra boost and focus!
Fair point about the distinction between minimalism and pickyness. I think I probably fall on the picky side of things too, haha. That said, I also think my FitBit Flex is pretty minimalist, FWIW
Hitting the gym everyday with weightlifting + cardio + sports during the week seems intense (I like 2-3 days a week of resistance and 1-2 of aerobics with at least 2 days off.) With most people fluctuating several lbs over the course of a single day, two thirds of a pound seems like it's within the margin of measurement error, maybe give it more time -- 2 weeks isn't much time if you're eating at a healthy 200kcal deficit or so.
This scale looks pretty cool: http://www.fitbit.com/aria
Awesome work! You're an inspiration to someone in Southern California where we're braving 70 degree Farenheit weather and winds gusting to 10 MPH.
>I exceeded my 10,000 steps to make my fitbit happy and I feel great!
Hopefully it made your fitbit happy and you got some joy out of it as well. If you want a fitbit friend you can add me: http://www.fitbit.com/user/23DSTT
Recent public statement from fitbit with deeper explanation - http://www.fitbit.com/forcesupport
Specifically note - "our users who experienced allergic contact dermatitis likely reacted either to very small levels of methacrylates, which were part of the adhesives. . . "
How is this not an actual fitness watch? It doesn't have all the fancy features something like Atlas Wearables has (e.g. identifying your workouts and counting your reps) but it seems to do everything the most popular fitness tracker, Fitbit, does (e.g. tracking your run via GPS and monitoring your heart rate).
I have a One and like it a lot.
It is more discreet than a Flex on the wrist. It is easily hidden on my waistband, or can be completely out of view in a pocket. It tells time and flights of stairs, but no goal setting.
Hey Fitbit Force users! In case you haven't heard yet, Fitbit has issued a voluntary recall for the Force in response to various reports of skin irritation from users. On that page there is a further link to obtain a full refund of your valuable fitness tracker moneys. They have also said there will be news about their next generation tracker soon.
I'm not actually experiencing the issue that is triggering the recall, but I am thinking about returning it anyway; I wonder what support will be like for a recalled product. My plan is to use the next 90 days to text out some running apps on my iPhone (along with the HR monitor I ordered) and then to pick a new tracker once the new Garmin has come out and been reviewed. Hopefully Fitbit will have announced what's coming up by then as well.
I'm not sure how /r/loseit feels about /r/paleo, but thus far it's helped me out considerably. On Christmas I was the heaviest I've ever been (260 lbs). I'm an IT drone so I pretty much sit on my ass all day. I do try and walk for about an hour everyday at lunch.
Also, my wife got me a Fitbit pedometer, which coupled with its online dashboard, has really helped me track my steps, weight and my calorie intake. The dashboard also let me set my goal (to get to 200 lbs) and the level of intensity I was willing to put in with regards to exercise and diet. According to my dashboard, I can meet my goal if I stay on track by the end of October. It took me three months to lose 30 pounds so losing another 30 in five months sounds doable to me.
I don't upload my data as often as I can and I do find the food tracker to be so tedious that I often don't bother to record what I eat. However, with /r/paleo I tend to find I really don't count calories and thus far I've lost 30 pounds (down to 230) since I really gave /r/paleo a serious try back on Ash Wednesday (I used Lent as an excuse/cover to stop eating grains and sugar).
Best of luck... you can do it!
I went here, since I use a fitbit to track my own calories.
http://www.fitbit.com/foods/Chicken+Nuggets/731216923
It does seem low but chicken nuggets are mostly chicken with a thin layer of breading, and chicken is pretty low calorie overall. Hell, even my own "pigging out meal" from mcdonalds is a full sharebox to myself, and that's only 800 calories. A big mac and medium fries is about 900 for reference
http://www.fitbit.com/foods/Tiramisu/82085
It's a physically light food, but it's fucking loaded. ~54g Carbs and ~18g sugar, horrible to eat while trying to cut. Not to mention 600+ calories to burn off.
Using lamb blood as a proxy, blood has 75 calories per 100 g. For a 2000 calorie diet (though I always imagine vampires as cold blooded and therefore needing fewer calories per day) you need about 2.6 kg per day. With a density of about 1 kg / liter this is 2.6 liters per day.
The Red Cross says you can donate every 8 weeks (though a vampire would likely be less concerned about your health and shorten this) each time donating 0.5 L. Or about 9 mL per person per day. To achieve 2.6 L/day you need 289 "donors."
Hey everyone! 32/F looking for fitbit friends. I had a fitbit several years ago and recently got a Charge 2 and I'm looking forward to get back into it. I would love some friends!! 😊

I didn't know either until...5 minutes ago. If you go to http://www.fitbit.com/user/2S7XW8 you should find me! I haven't found a way besides that little 6 digit user code there. You can find yours by going to your own profile page, if you want to add it to the challenge spreadsheet or share it with us. Let me know if that doesn't work!
Edit: Just change the 6 digit code in the URL to access someone's profile and add them as a friend directly. I haven't found a username search option anywhere on FitBit. :/

I've been on the beach and at a music festival so not much productivity.
Exercise: 0 gym days but lots of walking and swimming so good
Meditation: 0 days. I thought I could meditate a couple of days but it was either too noisy or I was too tired to do it. No big deal.
Read every day: 3/3 days. I didn't read at all at the music festival.
Journaling: 2/2 days. Travel journal mostly.
Fitbit on green: 4/7 days, but during the music festival I've walked more than 20.000 steps each day so very good.
Eat below my calorie limit: 0/7 days. My phone battery died during the music festival so I didn't log any food those days but my poor food choices and high alcohol comsumption makes it pretty clear I didn't reach my calorie goals.

Not sure about the stopwatch one but if you want your tracker to be less sensitive to step counting (still counts regular steps just not minimal hand gestures) try setting the watch setting to Dominant hand. This just makes it a little less sensitive to hand movements.
I was actually just going trough their FAQ. I'll copy paste some relevant info for you.
"Will Charge count steps when I’m working at a desk? Charge has been tested against activities like typing, writing, and using your computer. Generally, Charge will not pick up steps when you’re working at your desk. If it does pick up a few, these should not make a big difference in your overall stats. If you wear Charge on your dominant hand (e.g., the hand you write with), we recommend that you double check your device settings (see below). How can I make my Charge tracking more accurate?
You can improve the accuracy of your Charge by changing the Dominant Hand setting on your Device Settings page (http://www.fitbit.com/settings/device), which can be found under the gear icon in the upper right corner of your dashboard. Changing this setting to "Dominant" will decrease sensitivity of step counting and should reduce over counting of steps when your body is not moving. Using the "Non Dominant" setting will increase the sensitivity of step counting and can be used if your Charge is not counting enough steps. You can also add other personal settings such as stride length to make Charge more personalized for you."

I just got my Charge HR last night. Everyone feel free to add me! I would love some fitbit friends that would do the goals/challenges with me. OR someone to comment on my food log like "put down the fork, yo!" :)

EDIT: Link fixed!
Hey, get him a fitbit!
Bear with me here. If he has a mind for numbers and stats he'll love quantifying himself. There are phone apps and a web site that work with it. It will show him the number of steps he has walked, how he's sleeping etc, calories burned. The upcoming ones track heartrate too.
Basically it makes life into a game and shows him how much physical activity he actually gets versus how much he should get. The challenge is to hit the goal each day.
Even introverts need to go outside to be happy and healthy. If you teach him to treat maintaining himself as an interesting game, it might bring balance to the force and spark a lifelong interest in fitness.
Just an idea. Sounds like you've got a smart one!
Maybe you can get her one of those fitness monitors (http://www.fitbit.com/) they even connect to her phone and I think it's really useful to have if you're an active person. There's also this site called gifttree.com. It has all these amazing luxury baskets. What about an indoor picnic? Put the kids to bed, put on a movie and enjoy whichever gift basket purchased. You can also look into nearby spas, they might have couple packages so you both can enjoy some pampering. After watching the boys and dealing with this cat incident, I'm sure you guys can use some deep relaxation and alone time. Best of luck! Your wife is lucky to have such a caring husband :)
You might want to look into getting a pedometer app for your phone or a fitness tracker (like my personal favorite, a Fitbit). Fitbits and other fitness trackers will give you an accurate representation of how far you walked (even more accurate when you put your run/walk stride lengths in) as well as active minutes (continual walking) and I use it to keep track of distances I walk. It's a nifty little gadget
I feel your pain, I'm generally a lurker here but this post really resonated with me, this is frequently something I do that meant whilst I felt like I was constantly dieting for many years I was actually just piling more mass onto my already super morbidly obese frame.
I'm not going to pretend I've got all the answers for you and there are most certainly a lot more experienced and successful people on here that will offer you a tonne of support and advice if you need it.
I gave myself December off, this might not have been the smartest thing to do but it gave me a month of not feeling the pressure of dieting and exercise e.t.c. and I started renewed on the 1st of January. It sucked for the first week. Every minute I wanted to quit but browsing lose it, seeing all of the success stories and helpful advice teamed with the support of my fiancee helped me get through it. I've been using my Fitbit to track my steps and MyFitnessPal to track my calories, this was arduous as well at first but already feels standard now and I know a lot more about the nutritional values of items I'm putting into my body, I'm still eating food I like but I'm doing it at a much more sensible level than before.
I'm now the best part of a month in, I've lost 16lbs, and I think I've gained some muscle, I feel a lot healthier already, I've certainly got more energy than I used to have. Yes I've eaten a couple of crap things that I shouldn't have done but I've not let myself quit over it, I've made my peace with it as quickly as possible and moved on more determined than before.
So I guess to sum it up, just remember a lot of people understand how you feel, find something that will help you get over that initial hump and help you change your life for the better.
Fitbits are getting pretty popular. They don't look trashy like a lot of wearable tech and they're very versatile. I'd keep my eye out for them.
As far as other companies with wearable tech, I would turn some focus towards companies that are working on smaller, more environmentally friendly, and longer-lasting batteries. Batteries are the strongest limiting factor of mobile devices right now.
http://www.fitbit.com/one My friend has one of these and let me tell you, This thing is sweet. It tracks the calories that you burn throughout the day. It really is a good helper if you're into staying fit or losing weight.
I bought mine because a bunch of guys in the office did. It's cool for someone like me who is just getting into running and exercise.
Someone at work has dumped theirs in favour of the Fitbit now. Don't really know anything about that one though…
Here shows some of the nutrition of lamb's blood. It's 75kcal/100g and very rich in iron. But most labels like this don't list all the nutrients, just the basics.
That link is to the following info including Fitbit corporate office address and the contacts to reach out too if your as ticked off about this sensor as I am.....
I say we raid Fitbit and activate our sensors and forget about Area 51
The US Airforce has most likely already removing, or securing behind nuclear safe doors, ANYTHING comprimising from that base before Sept just incase, so there wont be anything too find.
We might as well go somewhere we can get something we have all paid for activated that wont lead to getting labeled a domestic terrorist....

Hey team!
I am 21, and living in Colorado. Just started my weight loss journey this past New Years, which was partially due to a New Years resolution, and partially due to the fact that my scale went from starting with 2, to starting with 3.
Since then, I have had some ups and downs; in the first 3 months, I lost ~40 pounds, but after that I plateaued and eventually gained back 15 of those pounds. Now in the past few weeks I have really been able to get back on track, and I'm down 5 pounds, so 30 pounds down overall. My goal specifically for this challenge is to stay on track and lose 20 more pounds to put me at 250.
I use Fitbit and myfitnesspal, but I have absolutely no idea where to find my username on those, so here is my myfitnesspal page and here is my Fitbit page.

I have upgraded my task management system. I use a plain text system with a daily Python script to archive old tasks and manage recurrence. I've added some additional logic to allow more customization and a new functionality to manage habits, including the automatic generation of the 'Accountability' section of this post :)
After listening to this podcast episode I'm planning to turn most of my habits into rituals. Let's see how it goes!

-edit- the Surge has 'All the bells and whistles' but I have the Charge HR and am very happy with it.
Certain features that are not on the HR but are on the Surge (Such as GPS tracking, and multi sport etc etc) can be remedied by using "Run Keeper" on your mobile and then synching the fitbit to it

Avid fitbit user. Took a "break" for the past couple of months. Gained a few pounds unfortunately. Now averaging 12k a day, used to do double that. Maybe /r/fitbit can get me to do it!

Mine's the Charge HR, cost $199 from dicksmith. They had the Charge for $179 and the only difference between the two is the HR has a heart rate monitor. There are cheaper ones too that have less features. I looked on trademe and on there they were cheaper but I'm not sure if they were legit because they were also cheaper than buying from Fitbit themselves online

Always keep in mind that if you do not buy the item from Fitbit's authorized retailers you may run in to problems when trying to get a warranty replacement. Ideally, you won't have to get a replacement, but if you're like me then your device is getting beat on day in and day out as you do work.

I would check out http://www.fitbit.com/devices to see if your phone is compatible with that feature. After that, on the Surge, swipe to settings and make sure notifications is set to on. Make sure Bluetooth on your phone is turned on. Be within 20 feet of your device. Open the Fitbit app on your device and tap on the Surge tile at the top of the mobile dashboard. Enable notifications and follow the onscreen instructions. Let me know if it works for you!
Back from the ban! Thank you /u/nura2011 for letting me know that something was wrong with my account.

These are really excellent. Sold at Amazon and most fitness/sports stores, I think.
Don't spend a fortune; even the cheapest ones work really well.
Hey I was in the same scenario as you. I would recommend thinking outside the box and looking at companies that are doing things that are health related and trying to think if you could fit within a position at the company. You said you have some experience in sales which is an asset that you can leverage. You have to think of yourself as a health professional with business skills.
For example What's a cool new health device that is growing and I might be interested in working for. FitBit came to mind because they are growing. So i punched them in google. Pretty much every company has a careers section at the bottom of their website to look at. On the FitBit website and found the title of Jr sales analyst. They said they're looking for new grads. Boom http://www.fitbit.com/jobs/search#i.1pev9mp12g5cuu
Now you might be slightly under qualified on paper for this position but if you contact them well and interview with passion I'm sure you could get that job. Especially at these entrance level positions where a lot won't be expected of you if you drive hard and make an effort to learn about what you don't know you'll be fine.
Now there's the whole issue of them being in San Francisco and I'm not sure your location or if you're willing to move. But Silicon Valley sounds pretty good to me compared to this winter I'm having in Canada right now.
Pm me if you want more advice, I've compiled a list of companies I'd look at down the road. Good Luck!
Fitbit has a scale with a max range of 350 lbs
Maybe get him one of the Fitbits when he meets a certain goal(they ain't cheap so you want to be sure he's going to use it)
Hi Buzz J.,
Your Flex battery level is low. Charge your battery as soon as possible.
To charge:
Your Flex will progressively illuminate the LED indicator lights as it charges, with each light representing 20% of the maximum charge. Once all five lights are pulsing, your Flex will be fully charged. It may take three hours for your Flex to charge completely, depending on the current power level. Your battery should last five days under normal use.
Happy stepping!

Notifications is not supported on fitbit for windows phone. Here are list of devices that fitbit supports for windows phone and it also lists what functions are supported. http://www.fitbit.com/devices
Check out the FitBit Zip.
It's a clip-on tracker powered by a watch battery that is supposed to last 3-6 months. Replacement batteries are cheap and weigh basically nothing.
It's a little device, there's different versions. The basic one works as a pedometer and shows distance traveled. Other versions count calories, track sleep cycles, and pair with smartphones so you can keep track of everything at once. Here's a link to the site, they're sold at Kohls and Walmart, and online. They're supposed to be great for fitness.
Don't know if its something you'd be interested in but the fancy pedometers from fitbit are quite nice. http://www.fitbit.com/ Different versions can track steps, calories, stairs and sleep/restlessness at night. They have an online program they sync up to nicely that you can track calories, water intake, etc on.
I'm thinking of getting her the Aria scale by Fitbit. She's wanted it for quite a while, and she'll be trying to get back into shape in the new year. She just had twins in October, and she's eager to get back to the gym. We don't have a scale in the house.
I think she's buying herself the newest Fitbit whenever it comes out, so it all goes together. She already has the current Fitbit.
I use a basic heart rate monitor to watch intensity on HIIT. You can figure out your ideal ranges for intensity, and a quick check of the wrist lets you know when to kick your ass a little harder. I have found that there are times when the monitor loses the signal, like if you bend over and the contacts come off your skin. I'd suggest taking the calories burned metric with a grain of salt.
As for tracking sleep and such, I like my Fitbit. You can't really track actual sleep cycles accurately without brain monitoring, so it just tells you whether you're restless or not. Also it has a cool silent alarm that vibrates to wake you up.
Honestly I'm just waiting for the new apple watch. Say what you want about it, but the fitness tracking looks pretty incredible.

Hey, thanks for hosting this! :)
I just bought a fitbit. I realize that I've put on a ~~few~~ several pounds and I'm just not healthy anymore. I'm looking for ways to change my diet to include more water and vegetables, (not a fan). I don't have much energy and I think this will help. Also, I'm not getting any younger.
My partner and I are also talking about children and I'd rather start ahead than behind.
So this is step one to being healthy. (I have several steps here... but I feel good about putting my plan into motion!)
Its honestly an amazing contraption! It is usb rechargeable, but the battery lasts for 3-5 days typically for me. It bluetooth syncs to your phone in real time, and also logs on your computer. Its been extremely accurate in both steps and distance for me. I tracked the exact distance on a treadmill, and it was the same as on my FitBit. It has a sleep function to measure how well you are sleeping, and how much you toss and turn during the night. It can also be connected to other apps such as MyFitnessPal and can use the calories you burn from walking to adjust your daily food consumption. I honestly got very lucky and got one as a gift. I did not ask for it, and did not know much about it (honestly I was offended when I received it, but thats a different story) but I've really grown to love it! It is water resistant, meaning you can wear it in the shower, when you sweat, in the rain. My friend uses hers in the pool, but I'm not quite that brave. I encourage you to check it out for yourself, I personally love it and find it way more effective/accurate/usable than the classic "hip" pedometer.
this is the one that I own: http://www.fitbit.com/flex?gclid=Cj0KEQjwopOeBRC1ndXgnuvx8JYBEiQAq4RPt5KHFQgu4F5Hkrv5ncPG_rQKy5nHgUBSYt_bEL4NkFsaAmsE8P8HAQ
Try a fitbit, some are less expensive than others. Does she have a smartphone or an mp3 player with bluetooth? These headphones are wonderful for walking or running.
I started by going to a weight doctor, who was like oh hey you're gonna be diabetic before you're even 30. Then I kinda went into shock. She gave me some advice, and some papers to count my calories, water intake etc. I went back every week for like 3 months and had lost 30 lbs (started at about 210/215). Initally just cut calories out, then over time most starches, junk foods, etc..you need to make yourself mentally used to it first. In the beginning I used some walking tapes, I was scared to go to a gym and well can't say I was really an outside person at the time. http://www.amazon.com/Leslie-Sansone-Walk-Pounds-Power/dp/B001213CT2/ref=sr_1_40?ie=UTF8&qid=1397785817&sr=8-40&keywords=leslie+sansone This was the tape, might be kinda dorky/make you feel like an old lady but holy shit it works. She now has a lot of other tapes and they all start with walking and add some other cardio/weights on. I still use them in the winter when I can't go outside.
Well I hope that helps.. There's a few free documents you can download online and print out to track calories, most people use apps now. I currently use a Fitbit http://www.fitbit.com/ - a little expensive ( I got it as a present) It actually does make me more motivated though, even after a few years of having my weight off I get to points where I want to eat some god damn brownies and not exercise..then my fitbit is like "HEY HUG ME..why aren't we walking you asshole.. I miss you"
Try a Fitbit. The small device automatically tracks every step you take, every floor you ascend, every mile you walk, and the quality of sleep you get at night.
With the Fitbit app you can log every food, calorie, and water you have eaten.
Also has a optional wifi scale that tracks your weight, and body fat.
As a fellow data hoarder, I have been enjoying logging all this personal information, receiving the weekly progress reports, and accumulating badges.
It just seems SO out of left-field. I don't even know where they came up with it. I know stuff like Fitbit are really popular right now, but that's not what I think of at all when I think of Nintendo. :(
Yeah, no clue why someone downvoted me, but thanks for the support. :) I'm 4 days into owning it now and I've showered and washed dishes with the damn thing. No problems whatsoever. From the website itself: http://www.fitbit.com/flex/specs
