> How is the way the phone handles WiFi notifications Verizon's fault?
Because it's a known Verizon bug. It's related to Verizon bloat.
> I run Nova launcher. Reaching to the status bar in order to double tap it by chance is much worse than just pressing with my finger where it already was resting.
I'm running Nova as well and have double tap to close.
Just install Screen Off and Lock and set the double tap gesture in Nova to it.
Yes. If you have Nova Prime (the paid version). You can get an app called Screen Off and Lock, then set it to be triggered by double-tap in the Nova gestures list. Works just like the stock launcher - tap any blank spot on the home screen(s) and off it goes.
Edit: added link
You can download this app, in Nova Launcher set the double tap gesture to launch it. It will turn the display off and lock the phone just like on LG's launcher.
Nova is the only launcher I've used but obviously this would work in any launcher with assignable gestures.
>Battery life not as good as expected. I only get about three hours of screen time (even on a fresh install), which is about what I got with my Nexus 5.
I don't understand how this is possible without there being something wrong with the device. I can get around 5-6 hours SOT even with heavy use and easily 7+ with my normal use.
>I also hate the small apps bar at the bottom of the Task Switcher UI.
That's possible to remove through ADB and it does not need root/unlocking. Disclaimer: I have never done it myself but I don't think it should bee too difficult.
>Super annoying USB flap.
Getting a magnetic charging dock helps but I understand if not everyone wants to use extra money just to charge the phone more conveniently. Newer Xperia devices, like M4, Z4 and Z4 Tablet, will have an open waterproof USB port but that doesn't exactly help the Z3.
>Tap-to-Wake, but no tap-to-sleep? Really?
I have it, sort of. I use Nova Launcher Prime and use the double tap gesture to activate Screen Off and Lock. It's a bit of work to set up but works as it should.
So there are solutions to at least some of your problems with it.
Get a widget that turns the screen off when you press it. As a security measure, it will "break" fingerprint lock until you unlock it with your secondary lock (E.g. Pin, Password, Pattern).
There's plenty of them around on Google Play. This one will do just fine: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Install it, activate it and add a shortcut on your home screen. There after, before going to sleep simply turn the screen off with that shortcut and the phone won't unlock with the fingerprint until you enter your pin.
It's part of Nova Launcher.
Screen Off... Works like a charm
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
Once enabled, you need to give it lock/unlock permissions when it prompts(which happens the first time). It works smooth as butter, always.
>They both feature double tap to wake and double tap to sleep
The Z3 doesn't have double tap to sleep but it's possible to have it with a launcher that supports double tap gesture (I use Nova Prime) and an app like Screen Off and Lock.
Download the "Screen Off and Lock widget". When you click it, it requires a password to get in, not just fingerprint. I keep it on my home screen in case I ever want to more securely lock the phone.
Just letting you know that you can set up double to sleep/lock on Nova by setting this app to the double tap on home screen gesture.
Try Screen off and Lock It will allow you to lock the screen by tapping on the app. If you use Nova Launcher you can set the app to open on double tap.
This is exactly what I've done. I've made a gesture with Nova, when I swipe up, it activates the screen lock app, it will not unlock until my PIN is entered. I do this before going to sleep but I did set up a Tasker profile to do this at midnight as well, in case I forget.
this is the app I use..... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
I have a screen off app. it has a widget so that I can turn my screen off when it is sitting on a table. I didn't need to, double tapping the notification bar does the same thing. But an added benefit is I can Okay Google ... Open "Screen Off" and my phone goes back to sleep.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
In the same boat and searched to find this. It doesn't happen all the time though. I have an app that turns the screen off called screen off and lock. If I use it, then it requires the pin after fingerprint.
Other times it's just random it seems (probably isn't) and if I let the screen go off on it's own it will ask for pin.
Thanks me later...
Normally, you can not use that features unless you use Zen home....so, this is a work around .....
How to get Asus ZenFone double tap to lock on home screen when using Nova launcher.
1- Install this app Screen off and lock
2- On nova launcher, go to
setting/ gesture and input/ double tap/ then select.... app/ pick the Screen off and unlock that you just install....
BAM.
You need to download this app here and then you should be able to go to Nova settings - gestures and buttons - double tap - apps - then select turn off. And BAM! You're done.
It is possible when you install an extra app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
You can add a Google assistant routine, and run the app when you for example say "hey Google, lock my screen"
I don't know if it's using Google smart lock or what the lock screen looks like.
However if you use a device admin lock method, it should require you to unlock manually. You can set up a gesture/icon in Nova or you can install an app for that, just make sure you trust that app as you're giving it device admin access.
I just installed this app. It needs some Lock permissions though.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
But when you have this app, you can bind the Nova Gesture to the app and then it works like a charm. Just set it up like
Settings -> Gestures & inputs -> Double tap -> Apps -> Screen Off
Swipe down on home screen to open plain text editor which I use for note taking.
Double tap to turn off display (Nova Launcher's gesture combined with this app).
With Nova Launcher, download an app that turns off your screen (like this one). Then just set the double tap gesture to activate that app. Then when you double tap the home screen, the screen will turn off.
not sure sure if this is what you wanted.
settings > display > tap to wake : on
settings > security > screen lock : swipe
am also on marshmallow. but it seems when the screen turns off on its own screen lock doesn't happen. so it's either you press on power to turn it off, or use a separate app with a shortcut to press and turn it off. try looking up screen lock app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
works fine for me.
this one seems to be highly rated and i think it would fit your needs. keep in mind that for any app to lock the screen it will either need root or device administrator permissions. i have not tried this app.
What launcher do you use? Nova Launcher has "gesture" support... so double tapping the home screen can be setup to "Lock Screen".
Otherwise if your launcher doesn't support it and without root you'll have to turn to an app / widget to lock the screen:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlock
IMPORTANT If you use Smart Lock (to prevent having to enter your passcode if connected to a specific Bluetooth / WiF / GPO Location) using any of the above methods will require you to re-enter your passcode.
I think with root / Xposed / custom kernel you can swipe along the navigation bar to lock the device and setup swipe or double tap to wake the screen as well.
You can install this app and set the double-tap gesture to run it
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
I'm not familiar with the launcher features, but in the event it's not possible, I've used this for a long time and have never had an issue: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Nova Launcher (or any other that supports activities) + Screen Off and Lock = double tap or swipe puts phone to sleep.
My favourite plain text editor + Dropbox (built-in support with a plugin in the editor or Dropsync) = my nerdy way of doing notes, and basically 1:1 how I do them on desktop.
I had the same issue on my GS4. It was a hardware failure of the power button. Any interaction is registered as a long press, thus the restarting.
I took the phone apart and tried to clean it out, but nothing i did succeeded for more than a few days. In the end, i downloaded an app which puts a "screen off" button in the notifications area.
I learned how to use the phone without pressing the power button and by using this Screen Off app. I continued to use the phone for 6 - 9 more months until the screen cracked.
I know I'm late to the game, but my fix for knock to lock in Nova is to download the app Screen off and lock. Then assign the double tap option in Nova settings to run that app. Works perfectly.
I rarely use the actual power button anymore. You could try turning on double "Tap to wake up" in Display options. Then I use a custom action in Nova Launcher to launch Screen Off and Lock so that double tapping the screen when it's awake makes it go to sleep.
If you've got Android hook up a Bluetooth mouse to wake up the screen. Use an app like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock to put an item in your notifications menu to turn the screen off and move the mouse tip wake back up.
If Apple, you might need to use a Bluetooth keyboard instead.
Screen off and lock works great for me
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
This one makes u active something in notification access that keeps it from doing that
There's an app, Screen Off and Lock - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
Download that; it will come with the App itself, which pressing instantly turns off your screen; and it will come with the settings. Play with the settings to learn what it can do - there are a few different animations it can do before actually turning off the screen (like TV static, or the screen bouncing around). I just set mine to Random.
Once you have your settings, go into your Nova settings-> Gestures-> set Double Tap to the Screen off and Lock app. Bam.
lock unlock lock unlock.
u cna get an app that puts a lock button on your screen.. and then go down the line, tap tap tap tap tap.. and back swipe swipe swipe swipe swipe. repeat until your fingers break.
totaly hope this helps
First, need to install "Screen Off and Lock"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
Then, in Nova settings, go to Gestures and Buttons. That's where the Double Tap home screen is. Select that, then go to Apps - Screen Off.
I'm actually trying to find where in the settings it is to assign something to double tap home, but I can't find it.
I don't know of any way to do this using the phone's physical power button. However, if you download an app that turns the screen off, such as Screen Off and Lock it will force you to use your PIN to unlock. It won't require a fingerprint, but it won't unlock with just your fingerprint.
Just use this app....it has a Shortcut/App you can trigger with Tasker to instantly turn off the display. I've been using it for YEARS without issue.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Not by default, but if you download a 3rd party screen off app, such as: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
Basically, any app that locks the screen through a Device Admin permission will cause biometric unlock methods to be locked.
So if you lock through the Power Button or natural ways... it'll allow Biometrics Unlock. But if you lock through one of those apps, then it'll request for Password Unlock only.
So one "trick" you can do, say if Law Enforcement asks you to unlock and you still have the Biometric locks available, is to put the Screen Lock app into the bottom Left (Phone) or bottom Right (Camera) buttons.
So when they give you the phone to unlock with fingerprint, swipe that Lock Screen app on the bottom corner while you go to unlock. This way, when you successfully unlock, it'll trigger that Lock Screen app immediately causing your phone to lock and only a password lock will be available.
Or, even before that, when you see Law Enforcement, just click into Lock Screen... swipe up on that app, use Fingerprint... and now you're successfully locked in Password only.
You can download an app from play store that only locks your screen like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock Or any other app that locks your phone.
Now assign this app to swipe up or down and you'll be able to lock the screen by just swiping.
download VLC Player... or
instead of pause: switch off the phone (you probably need another app like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock or root then)- maybe it will pause your playback
yeah, it's this one, but looks like it may have gone down in quality.. dunno since i haven't updated it in forever. you may be able to find an older version on one of those sites that hosts older apk versions
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
When I had the G3 running Nova, I remember using this app to restore some of the Knock On functionality. Does that work with the G6?
Screen Off and Lock I'm using this app, very easy to use, high ratings, you can set time to auto turn on/off screen. Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en apk: http://choilieng.com/apk-on-pc/com.katecca.screenofflock.apk
Shortcut or gesture close enough?
Screen Off and Lock: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Make a homescreen shortcut to this or combine it with laucher gesture (I use double tab).
On Android you can install a third party app called Screen off and lock that gets setup as a device administrator and just by pressing the widget it requires your pin or passcode next time you go to unlock your phone.
I have this installed and use it as extra security so that when I'm home I can leave my auto-lock settings to be fairly lax, but when I'm out I can just tap that on my screen and it secures my phone more.
Long shot...but do you have this app installed by any chance?
Or any other app for that matter which has the ability to lock your screen? If so, I read somewhere that this interferes with the system security and asks for pattern when you unlock
Me too. You can fake double tap to lock, at least, with Nova Launcher. Download the app called "Screen off and Lock". It's free. It's sole purpose, when run, is that it turns off your screen and locks the phone. Assign the gesture of double tap in Nova to run the app. Boom. Instant double tap to lock.
It won't wake your phone, but still works relatively well. No root needed.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
I don't think you can. Any reason why you don't trust the sensor for lockscreen? There's a limit to the number of tries one can have before requiring to wait. Quite difficult for anyone to spoof your fingerprints and have it work.
There is one way actually. Get one of those widgets that can turn your screen off from the home screen. Android will automatically require you to unlock the phone with a passcode/pattern afterwards.
You can use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Hi, My power button stopped working about 3 months ago. I didnt drop it. I use this app and it has been working pretty well.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Screen off and Lock. If used with Nova Launcher, you can set the double tap gesture to this and double tap anywhere on the screen to turn it off.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Sounds like a stuck power button. Avoid touching it and use the home button to bring up the lock screen. Install this to turn the phone off. Screen off
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Nova Launcher Prime allows you to set up swiping gestures on the home screen. I use this app. In Nova settings choose gestures and pick the one you want, then point it towards the app. I love having this option since my watch keeps my phone unlocked all the time.
Which app are you using? This is the one that I didn't have any issues with. Even set it as a gesture in Nova Launcher so I could double tap empty space on the home screen to turn the screen off.
I don't have my 5X yet so I can't test this, I'll try it out when mine arrives next week if we can't get this resolved for you.
It's a workaround but a combination of Nova Launcher and this app can be used on the home screen. It require Nova Launcher Pro, but try out the basic version first to see if you like it enough.
You go into Nova settings and setup double tap gesture. I believe it's only in the pro version. But it's definitely worth the couple if bucks for Nova.
Get the app Screen Off and Lock. This will fix your problem for any launchers other than the stock LG one. I know in nova you can set double tapping the screen to perform an app. Set it to that app.
First you'll need an app like this.
Nova Launcher settings > Gestures and Buttons > Double tap > pick whatever app you choose.
My home screen was always full on my G2 so it was hard to find an empty area to double tap. On my Droid Turbo I keep Screen Off and Lock on my home screen for single touch locking. I don't miss double tap off.

I use screen off and lock in combination with the gestures (double tap in my case) from Nova Prime.
I use Screen Off and Lock. It has an option to lock your screen by tapping a notification.
install a "screen off" app. and make the button for that app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Just install Screen Off and Lock and set the Nova gesture to double tap. :)
Per spegnerlo puoi usare questa app
Per accenderlo non so
Screen Off and Lock or any other app that uses device administrator permissions to turn off the screen.
If you use a screen off and lock widget, it will do that.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
This app is what I used to use before buying Tasker
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
I use this app just for that reason and I will probably install this app on every phone I buy.
You can do this either
[EDIT: Damn I've found Screen Off and Lock only after that other apps, now this answer looks strange :D]
I used Screen Off and Lock in 5.1.1, not sure if it works on 6.0
If you have tasker you can set it up as a shortcut, otherwise someone in the same thread has linked this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Found it! This is it. Idk if it's compatible with the G4 but it works(ed) on my G3 with Nova.
You can use an app/widget like Screen off & lock and put that on your home screens.
I use this and also get to have double tap for lock/unlock as well as a customisable screen off animation
Customization is the key word. If you can do everything you want to with Google Now Launcher then there's little reason to switch. I personally find GNL to be horribly limited after using Nova Prime for so long.
Some features:
Swipe gestures: I've set swipe up (on the home screen) to open the app drawer and swipe down to pull down the notification bar (no more stretching for one handed use). Swipe down with two fingers opens settings. My phone have tap to wake but is missing tap to sleep. That's fixed by setting the double tap gesture to Screen Off and Lock.
Another thing is swipe up from icons. Swiping up from the calculator app opens a unit converter while tapping opens the calculator normally.
Homescreen: Change Icon size, change grid size, icons, disable/enable dock, change scrolling animation etc. My homescreen atm.
App drawer: Icon size, grid and animations can be changed here too. Hide apps. Choose between scrolling horizontally or vertically. I have a lot of games so I have those in their own tab while all my normal apps are in the tab to the left and everything I rarely use but don't want to hide/uninstall is to the right.
Just an FYI you can use the double tap in Nova Prime and tell it to launch this app...https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Just another option for you.
I use nova launcher + this app
Just set the double tap gesture to this app and you are good to go :)
You can use the app called Screen off and lock
Found an app that does this.APP
Found an app that does this.APP
Screen on/off I've been using this one for 3-4 years now. Had no problem with it
Try setting the double tap gesture to open this app.
Maybe that'll bypass the issue . Always worked for me.
A search of the play store would sort you out, I've used this one as a home screen icon to lock the phone.. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
This is the one I was using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
I use this with Nova Launcher's gestures, I think otherwise exactly same use case than you have.
Download an app such as this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock ... Set it up ...And then use Google Now to launch the app.
for #1 get an app like this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
It lets you make a homescreen widget that will turn off the screen when tapped
Instead of using the Nova action for screen off, point it to the app screen off and lock. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
There is no double tap to sleep. But you can use nova launcher gestures to do that. Or use screen off and lock https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
I had to use the app screen off and lock to achieve this. Works well for me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Try this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
You can also use this alongside Nova Launcher to get Double Tap to Sleep on your home screen.
I use this combined with nova launcher gestures to turn screen off and lock, but you could make shortcut as well: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
App/file conflict or a faulty power button try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en%3Futm_source%3Dna_Med
This is what I'm using: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Install Screen Off & Lock app.
Assign Nova's double tap gesture to this app.
Profit??
I use this with nova launcher.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
If you mean swipe up from Home button to sleep you can try this app. I hope it does what you need.
I used this for Knock on/off on custom launchers. Just set the app to launch when you double tap in custom launcher. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock

For double tap to lock, you need to install the Screen Off and Lock app and then assign that gesture to the app.
Um why don't you use a app like turn off screen to be launched when you press double tap on the screen:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
So the pull down, you mean if a widget is in your way you can still swipe on it downward and it will invoke a gesture? If so, you should ask Chris to add it, there is a few features i asked and he added it.
I use Screen Off and Lock with Nova double tap to turn the screen off, and I can unlock with imprint. Might give that a shot.
Nope, you need to use the double tap gesture shortcut with this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
I just use a screen off app and in nova gesture settings pointed the double tap to it, works like a charm like the stock lg setup with extra options
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
