Android O supports the substratum theme engine without needing root access. With it you can change the theme, just install it and look for a theme you like in the Play Store.
You can also get the new navigation bar using Substratum & N Navbar.
This is already possible on Android using Substratum with the Swift Black theme (paid). It requires root unless you're on Oreo, however.
Having a built in black theme would be amazing on both mobile and PC.
Yes, this is true for the G6. The G6 comes with vanilla Android, so it's a clean slate to work with. However, it does come with a few Moto apps that are actually extremely useful (shake for camera, chop for flashlight). If you're technologically inclined, you can also root it and/or install a custom rom or Xposed to basically be able to customize every aspect of the phone. Those are some advanced things to do, so you might want to hold off on them for a while, but the option is there. I am not sure what themes you're referring to exactly. Maybe Substratum? Usually need root for that app though. I've had every Moto G besides the 2nd gen. Currently have a G5+ and am gonna wait until the G6+ (hopefully) comes to the US. They are great phones. My mom, dad, brother, fiancée, best friend all have Moto Gs and none of them have ever had a serious problem with them.
[Projekt.] Is the developer for substratum, sungstratum and andromeda in the play store.. It even says this under sungstratum :
> An add-on to enable Samsung mode for Samsung devices (Nougat 7.0 - 7.1.1) on our main theme engine, Substratum, downloadable here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
So, what's going on?
>plus you can't theme android with apps that's impossible .
If you want more than that, there's Substratum.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
Soon this will be updated to allow our phones rootless theming. At least that's what the devs posted last week. I can't wait!
Edit: original Reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/6vregw/android_oreo_rootless_systemwide_theme_support/
You just get the theming app Substratum and then get the theme from the post. Substratum is $2 but worth it, then just open it up and select the theme then just choose if you want the dark version or the black version and apply it
It's true that Pixel Launcher is open-source though I tried a few of play store launchers that aim to imitate the Pixel experience and none of them are the real-real deal and they eat up all that's left of your RAM.
What I do recommend is Nova Launcher plus a few tweaks and you have yourself a beautiful Pixel-like launcher that is lightweight, works great, and supports tons of awesome customization even if you only use the free version. I actually recently started using this launcher and with a help of few articles not only did I manage to recreate the "pixel experience" but I also freed about 200mb of that precious RAM when compared to the stock nexus launcher. Here is the final effect:
https://i.imgur.com/MERYvPA.jpg
Only app other than Nova was a Substratum which I used to theme navigation buttons.
A theming framework/app called Substratum. They have various levels of theming options depending on your device (rooted? stock? custom ROM? etc). Not every theme has skins for Sync, but the particular one I'm using (OutlinePro) does.
A lot of people, myself included, like to have different coloured apps than the default. I like black screens (with white writing) as I find white hard on my eyes in the evening. There’s a whole phone modding culture based on Subtratum theming.
All that is gone on Pie. Well, not gone, but not possible without root.
It's a theme engine, allows you to install custom themes.https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en_US
although, I've started using Swift Installer instead because on most Samsung devices it's more seamless/standalone than Substratum. (basically Swift was one of the most prominent substratum themes, they made a separate installer/theme engine based around the original theme and added a lot more customization to it)
Substratum and always on enabler
Edit. Just to be clear, I never said it doesn't need substratum, just the Andromeda part which seems to be the biggest hassle.
I can't comment on Bell. I have done it on Verizon, T-Mobile and Google's Project Fi with no issues. After wiping and installing the OS, you will go back through the activation process that you probably did when you first received your Pixel. Your phone isn't rooted or bootloader-unlocked if you never did it yourself. I have a Nexus 5x, but I assume Pixels are the same. They have a little command to unlock the bootloader, which makes it easy to unlock if you want to. They aren't trying to block you from unlocking like other manufacturers/carriers.
Stock means the Official OS for you device, like the one that came on it, rather than custom versions of Android (custom ROMS) that hobbyists/third-parties build with different features. The "+samsung" part is there because substratum only recently started officially supporting samsung operating systems, because they are very different under-the-hood than other versions of Android. Substratum themes often have different modes for different target devices. So you select which most or device, then select the parts of the theme to apply (systemUI, settings menus, apps, etc).
In order to apply the themes, you will need the Substratum app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum It looks like you will need root to use it on a pixel with Stock Android, or you would need to have an unlocked bootloader and a custom ROM.
> Substratum REQUIRES root, or else it will not function! > HOWEVER, if you're running on an OMS-based ROM or a Samsung device with Nougat and above then Substratum will run on rootless mode!
If you want to do a little more research on Substratum, here is the xda subforum for Substratum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/substratum
It's called substratum and you first purchase that. If you are rooted you use magisk to allow root privelages (to apply overlays or "theme"). At that point open substratum and select your overlays (follow directions in the app perfectly and you would end up with what I have here (settings page in next post showing off the subs app).
If you aren't rooted you will need Andromeda companion provided you are on Oreo 8.X, also on playstore. There are a few ADB commands but it's super simple stuff and your result will also be system wide theming. All that said in f you run Pie or later you must be rooted to use substratum.
There are many apps themed and it will grow with more apps as it matures. This developer keep his apps updated so it's a solid buy.
Because of Google stopping 3rd party overlays you have to get root access to use the app at this point which is free. All explained in Andromeda app listing below with links to everything as well.
You can search XDA and Telegram for groups to get free overlays and Soo support if you need help.
I hope I was helpful to you.
Substratum app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
Andromeda (if not rooted and running Oreo 8.X) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda
There's an android app called substratum that can theme many apps that don't have official dark themes as well. There's a lot of themes available with varying colors and levels of contrast.
It's been a game changer for me, maybe it will help you.
Idk what phone/OS you're using, but if you're lucky you could use Substratum (unrooted requires a few pc tricks tho, dw its really easy) it allows you to mod the entire system UI / overlays for every app. I moved my clock to the center.
(If you want to; some helpfull articles) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum https://www.xda-developers.com/substratum-hub/
Yes I have substratum installed with Transparent Lockscreen for SAMSUNG ONLY theme
makes lockscreen elements transparent and modifies the always on display
You know, I didn't even really notice that the icons weren't stock. I used to have apps that can change the navbar installed, but I don't anymore, so I'm not entirely sure how it's still not the same as stock. Anyway, the apps that I have used in the past that may have modified the navbar are Substratum and Navbar Apps. Besides those two, I'm not really sure what could have done it.
Get Google reward and earn the money

Idk how it works
Substratum - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en + dark overlays which can be found in the playstore like this - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brit.swiftdark.substratum&hl=en
Than you have to use
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
With this addon
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda
Look for it how to use it on xda
Process for Android 7.0 nougat.
Download substratum theme engine.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
It'll tell you that you are using a supported hardware and will direct you to purchase a license key-app for your Samsung device.
Download Swift Black theme.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brit.swiftblack.layers
I guess this would do: Substratum. Never tried it myself as I did never have a stock rooted phone on Nougat, and ROMs like CyanogenMod have their own theming.
If the K1 gets updated to Oreo, it could maybe work with that addon: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda
You need to use substratum and either have a Substratum-compatible version of android or be rooted. Download Substratum from the playstore along with whatever theme you want. Here's the one he's using.
Once you have those both installed you can just follow the instructions in the Swift Black play store description.
Check out Substratum and Swift for Samsung. You'll also need the Samsung plugin. Not perfect but works pretty well. It will theme many 3rd party apps to black.
No root.
Once installed there is a 'Samsung' section and you can go as simple as themeing just the statusbar with a free theme to get the AOSP icons or you can combine themes (using only parts of themes and not using the ones you don't like)
You select what you want to theme and it builds an apk for each thing and you then get walked through applying them.
Any thing you apply only shows after a reboot.
you can do this using substratum themes.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en_GB
and
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.zipalign.navbars&hl=en_GB
You get the new ones, but PureNexus has support for the Substratum theme engine, which has many options. The navigate plugin has a lot of nifty navigation button options. There are many other similar ones as well so you can completely customize the new navigation buttons if you want to
The OP3 definitely have better rom support, but luckily we have a few devs who work on roms for the MZP. I'm running the LineageOS rom on my phone and it works perfectly except the camera. If you really want a dark theme, rooting and using Substratum with this theme works like a charm :)
There's a Substratum theme that can do this, but it needs root.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kohlewrrk.lockclean
Yep, for Substratum themes you'll have to be rooted, install the theme "engine": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en
then you can install the themes. It works pretty well, better than any other themes I've used (Including those on CM10)
It seems like everyone's touched on everything but theming. You don't need a custom ROM for that, once you're rooted, you can just download Substratum and any theme you like.
if you have root, you can install Layers, aka Substratum, to get a dark theme. AFAIK, there isn't a workaround to enable the default dark mode that was in the previews. Substratum or CyanogenMod Theme Engine are your best bets.
It's possible with root. Download substratum theme engine and Inversion UI theme from the Play Store, and install the theme with substratum.
You can change it to any colour with Hex Installer(Search it in Play Store) or Substratum theme
Good luck for learning curve.
I'm assuming you have root.
Download and install:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.msfjarvis.substweaks
Open substratum. Click on substweaks. Scroll down to System UI QS tile icons. Hit the checkmark. Select wether you want the names visible or not. Then select c06 for 6 per row.. or whatever number you want.
Then bottom right button build and install.
Reboot.
Open substratum. Bottom menu click on manager. Click on System UI QS tile icons checkmark. Bottom right button click on enable selected.
Done.
I've always wanted to check out Substratum (custom system-wide themes) for my phone but I've never gotten around to rooting it. Tell me how it goes!
Great stuff:
You could try substratum theme engine.
Alternatively you could take a look at Power Shade, which gives you full control over how you want your quick settings panel.
Hope this helps you
I installed a custom theme on my phone using Substratum
If you have a Samsung phone you'll need Synergy and Substratum Lite + the theme you want to apply
I use this one
Use substratum you need to be rooted though works on Android 7.1 and greater many custom ROMs include their own theming options in home settings. You can easily download a dark theme from the play store and apply it. There is a seperate version for Samsung devices called Andromeda https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
>Samsung's unthemeable blinding white
Just out of interest, have you tried and therefore found something that isn't themeable with Substratum perhaps due to sans root?
I believe he's using substratum and Yoru.
The proper way to do if you're NOT rooted is to get substratum app from the play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum along with the Samsung 'plugin': https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda (Paid)
Then you can install tweaks which can modify basically how anything looks on your phone.
I personally use it to make apps like Instagram and WhatsApp to have a dark theme.
Many good tweaks are paid apps on the store as well unfortunately.
Substratum theme engine: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
Andromeda: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda
I haven't done much with them, so you'll have to just play around with them and find a theme that works for you. Enjoy!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en_AU thats the theme engine https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brit.swiftblack.layers that's the theme I use
A free alternative is substratum with a free theme like yoru. Functionally, it's similar to Swift Installer.
That's kinda gross but I can point you in the right direction. Look into substratum. It may not work on your device but it's where themeing on Android is right now
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en
Ah, that's called the nav bar down there. Since you have such a recent version of Android you can use an app called Substratum to change the look of that.
You can also put the back button on the correct side. Unless Samsung has finally given up on putting on the wrong side.
Not sure what phone/OS version you are on, I am using a Samsung Note 8, but what I do is use Substratum: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en
If you have a Samsung, download "Status Bar Icons for Samsung (+extras). There is an overlay in there called SamsungSans. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ohayoubaka.statusbarsamsung&hl=en The drop down menu gives you an option to apply Google Product Sans to the device. Choose that. After you reboot device go to settings>displayscreen zoom and font and you'll see a bunch of product sans font options under font style. It's just like choosing any other font on your device now. Pretty ingenious. Highly recommend.
I use Flamingo as well. You can go into settings on Flamingo and then under the font settings chose "system" as the font and it will use whatever font you just chose in the above step. This is my workflow, anyway. Looks great. Good luck!
Substratum with Andromeda (if you don't wanna root your Pixel). It lets you install dark themes for almost all the popular apps. Makes your OLED screen look even prettier!

It's a substratum theme. My favorite one.
Android user here. I use Substratum with the Swift Black theme, and it creates a dark theme overlay for WhatsApp that works great.
I think they may have rolled it out to some others like here.
But you're right on the point that most of those features are still only on the custom ROMs or require a seperate app (like Substratum for theming).
You may be able to make use of Substratum, as you have a Samsung phone. However I have not tried this firsthand, I do know that Substratum works well enough on my rooted Nougat phone.
This one came on Resurrection Remix rom for my note 2 and is pretty nice. But if it isn't compatible just google around to find a good theme engine. I would link more but I've only used that one. I'll do research and get back to you though but if you find one first i just ask for a link :)
To /u/jbuschini18 or anyone else who knows more about this than I do, I see here (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum) that it says the following: >Substratum REQUIRES root, or else it will not function! HOWEVER, if you're running on an OMS-based ROM or a Samsung device with Nougat and above then Substratum will run on rootless mode!
I'm on a NON-rooted Pixel XL running Oreo (8.0.0); is this an "OMS-based ROM", meaning that Substratum will run in rootless mode? I tried reading through the G+ group/pages but I'm not confident that I understand enough to tell whether things are applicable to my situation.
EDIT: Researching further, it looks like per the Substratum subreddit, in my situation I will want to wait for "Project Andromeda", which will be available here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda ...soon, apparently. If anyone has any additional insight to provide, please feel free. I'm really excited to get rid of the stock white theme but I'm not interested in rooting or otherwise doing too much with my phone.
Hold the phone; that's amazing! I read through Substratum's page here though and they only mention working with Nexus/Pixel devices. Is it possible to rootlessly install this Substratum system on both S7's and S8's now? Trying not to get my hopes up...I hate the retina-scalding whiteness of Google's apps so much...
edit: nevermind, I found the $2 add-on. Looks like it only came out last week but I am definitely going to check it out.
If your S7 Edge runs at least Android 7.0, you can also use Substratum with the Samsung add-on for app theming without root.
Also, you can get the ad-free Shazam Encore for free from Galaxy Apps.
I'm not sure how this hasn't been mentioned yet.
Substratum with Swift Black. Please be sure to know that it's compatible with your ROM, and what version to run. I am not responsible if you brick your device because you don't know what you're doing.
Try the app Substratum theme engine from the play store. You can find all kinds of custom home buttons as well as great themes for other apps. N Navbar is on of my favorites.
Yeah, I hear ya. Battery life isn't a really big concern for me though, as I have a Xiaomi 10400mAh portable charger on me at most times.
The CM themer doesn't work for Nougat yet, so they've completely removed it from builds, at least until they get it working. Some people have had success with Substratum on CM14.1, but most others (myself included) just get bootloops when trying it. Yeah dark themes were my jam back on CM13 - amoled black everywhere, haha.
Download an app called substratum theme engine off of the play store and then the pixel ui. This is actually the theme they had built in to the ROM before it was removed. This has no performance impact whatsoever and changes everything perfectly. Enjoy! If you need a tutorial on how to use substratum let me know and I'll create a little video
Using Substratum & N Navbar should do the trick. I don't think you'll get the cool animation the Pixel has for tapping the home button though.
Install Substratum and Andromeda (paid - 2 US dollars).
Install Ozone.
Download the Andromeda batch script from here.
Connect your phone to the PC. Install the OnePlus drivers.
Remove phone. Enable USB debugging on developer options (tap the build number on About phone repeatedly to access it).
Connect phone. Follow the instructions from the XDA thread.
Substratum should open automatically. Click Ozone. Check five overlays at a time to Build and Enable. Be sure to select the modes you'll be using to your overlays like here.
You can try other themes as well. I personally use Swift Black for pitch black themes everywhere.
That screenshot is mine, I included it just to show how close it can get to a Pixel look, and didn't anticipate there'd be so much interest in the setup (I got a couple PMs about it since). Here's all of it.
You can probably find a better launcher option, since that screenshot is old. I've since moved on to the Oreo beta for testing and haven't felt the need to set it up like that again.
For anyone wondering. This is a third-party lockscreen app, not a lockscreen wallpaper maker. What's the difference? If it was a wallpaper maker you'd use the Android lockscreen, but since this is a separate app if you have password/pin/fingerprint you will get two lockscreens. To avoid it you need to remove stock lockscreen, but then you are left with a third-party app that can be uninstalled so the security level is the same as if you had no password/pin at all.
EDIT: if security matters to you but you still want to make custom lockscreens, here's a solution.
You need KLWP, Pro key not required, as well as Nova Launcher. In KLWP make an overlap group that only contains stuff you want on your lockscreen. Design it the way you want, after you're finished with it, in that overlap group go to 'layer' tab and set 'visible' to 'if locked'. Your overlap group will instantly disappear after that, because the condition for its visibility is a locked screen. This is the intended behavior. Save your theme and lock the screen. If nothing changed, unlock your phone, choose a regular photo and set it as wallpaper, then go back to KLWP and save your theme once again. Now you should get a prompt from Nova Launcher asking whether you want this wallpaper to be visible on homescreen, lockscreen, or both. Choose either lockscreen or both. Your lockscreen theme is now working.
You probably noticed that the stock lockscreen clock is not what you want. There's a solution for that too.
Prerequisites:
If you're a Samsung user ignore two points above and refer to this guide (I don't own a Samsung phone so don't ask me questions about this).
Now that lockscreen is gone you can design your own in KLWP.
Are notifications are in the way? Yes, there's even solution for that. Go to your lockscreen settings and hide them. This most probably differ from phone to phone so just figure this one out yourself. KLWP does allow for displaying notifications so you can even design those from the ground up.
Downsides
It seems nice and all, but there are 3 downsides to using KLWP for lockscreen themes.
<strong>Renovate ice</strong> (Rom with ui tweaks, status bar and notification colours etc.) Im running android 7.0 with renovate ice 7.5
<strong>Swift For Samsung</strong> (for applying overlays on apps)
<strong>Transparent Lockscreen for SAMSUNG</strong> (making a clean slate for a klwp lockscreen)
<strong>Samsung System Mods</strong> (misc. system ui tweaks, notification shade etc.)
<strong>Nova launcher</strong> (custom homescreen and appdrawer also using "app search" to replace the stock recents apps page)
<strong>Swipe Navigation</strong> (replacing onscreen navbar, middle swipe is home with a long swipe bringing down quicksettings, left is nova app seatch with long swipe swapping to last used app, right is back button with long swipe killing the current app)
<strong>Klwp</strong> (Custom homescreen and lockscreen)
<strong>SwiftKey Keyboard</strong> (replacing stock keyboard, combined with substratum+swift making it "amoled black" black)
<strong>Boot animation</strong>
Okay, so to get right into the how to. These are the requirements:
So now that you've downloaded everything, these are the steps:
1) Open Substratum
2) Tap 'Wings Samsung Fonts'
3) Tap 'Samsung Sans' and select 'XDA 968 Fonts (by Winb33)' from the dropdown menu
4) Apply said overlay (press the FAB)
5) Tada! You now have over 900 fonts including Roboto Light, Helvetica Neue, Segoe UI and many more
6) Go to Settings→Display→Screen zoom and font and apply the font of your choice
TL;DR: Download the linked APKs and apply the overlay through Substratum.
To be honest, you won't really save much energy by using an AMOLED wallpaper because you usually don't spend much time in your launcher.
Obviously a full black wallpaper will save the most energy while a white wallpaper will light all the sub pixels and use even more energy than a typical LCD screen (from 15-30% up to 100% more). If you want to save a noticable amount of energy you'll have to use apps which support switching to an AMOLED theme or use apps like Substratum or Andromeda (for Oreo) to manually theme your most used apps.
Most screens have a "PenTile" sub pixel layout with 2 green 1 red and 1 blue sub pixel to even out the colors rendered to the human eye. As they have different states of degradation (blue has the shortest lifespan) you want to use less blueish colors to try to even out the differences. In theory you would want to use a more greenish color like this for everything. Something like a Pip Boy theme for all your apps would seem to be optimal.
I don't have any numbers regarding the power consumption of individual sub pixels but in theory producing light requires different amounts of energy. I once learnt that a green diode is 12 times more efficient than a blue diode and about twice as efficient as a red diode. But I don't really know if that's still the case with today's OLED screens... To make it more complicated, sub pixels in the screens have different sizes so you may have different power consumption between screen manufacturers.
Edit: just found this blog post which seems to answer a few more questions. Looks like I remembered right about the diode power consumption.
Yep! Use substratum with the Samsung unlock (it's like $3) and then install this app.
Just note that if you go into the super battery saving mode it'll change it back. Also some themes conflict so disable them if you have issues.
I also used this method to make the status bar black.
You can do this with apps that use overlays like Substratum and Swift Installer, or with custom Samsung themes using themeGalaxy. They all have different strengths and weaknesses. None of these need root to work.
themeGalaxy gives you the most customization options, but it has a steeper learning curve and can take time to create a perfect theme. Between Swift Installer and Substratum, the former is more user friendly and has more (accent) color options, but the latter has some more capability with other UI tweaks if you're interested. Both have some compatibility issues with Samsung Themes, but Substratum can have less problems depending on the method you use to apply your overlays (see Andromeda).
Substratum with the Swift Black theme
On Android 8.0, you can use Substratum together with Andromeda in order to theme the whole OS. For YouTube, I'm using this theme right now.
As other have said, it's based on your wallpaper. Dark wallpaper will lead to dark UI.
If you're like me and want to keep your lighter wallpaper while maintaining the dark UI, you can use Subtratum along with Andromeda which will enable customzing the UI.
Personally, I use Sai's Oreo Theme for the system setting UI and Swift Black for most of my apps to turn them to pitch black UI.
Note that Andromeda and Swift Black are paying.
EDIT: Here's a tutorial to get started with Subtratum: https://www.xda-developers.com/custom-themes-android-oreo-substratum/
On Android you can use substratum with Swift Black Theme. This will turn todoist dark. [Note: on Samsung you need to also install Samsung Addon]
Theme Galaxy - a custom theme maker. Make your own theme! You also have dozens of shared themes to download.
Substratum - custom theme engine. Less stable then theme galaxy.
A few good custom themes - I use the JAJANKEN theme from here. It's gorgeous custom theme. Screenshots here.
This essentially zooms in your screen so only the space above the navigation bar is rendered. What that means is that anything that would normally fall in that area is going to get cut off. Lock screen shortcuts, any apps that hide the navigation bar themselves and put stuff down there, etc. ~~It also disables the hard press home button (it'll still vibrate, but it wont actually go home).~~ EDIT: Apparently this is only the case if you run the overscan command without the immersive mode command before it, it's not an issue when you overscan with immersive mode enabled.
There's another method that doesn't have these downsides, but does come with a few of its own. Install substratum, andromeda, and samsung system mods. Optionally, install an app that lets you toggle immersive mode on the navigation bar, my favorite is systemUI tuner, and follow the prompts it gives you to give it adb permissions. Then you'll want to go into substratum (might need to open andromeda at least once for it to register, but it shouldn't need adb/a computer connection to start up anymore so if it prompts you to do that you can ignore it), and install the "Remove Nav Bar Immersive" overlay under System UI in the System Mods theme. Reboot for it to apply. After you boot back up, if you installed an app to toggle immersive mode, use that to hide the (now blank) navigation bar, if not, you'll want to use adb to hide it using the following command:
adb shell settings put global policy_control immersive.navigation=*
One thing I should mention is that you probably either want to enable your gesture navigation before doing all of this, or use something like the edge navigation edge screen widget (it's a good idea to install this anyway, in case of emergencies) to move around after you install the substratum overlay. Installing the overlay and rebooting to enable it completely gets rid of your navigation bar, leaving you with a blank space in it's place.
Some of the quirks of this method are that things like pulling up the keyboard and split screen mode force the navigation bar to show back up , so you'll have a blank bar when you're doing that. I personally found the space under the keyboard super helpful because reaching all the way down there to type is awkward; the space in split screen mode didn't bother me too much since I rarely use it. When you're using the phone in landscape mode, you'll also notice that the status bar doesn't fully extend to the edge of the phone on the side that would normally have the navigation bar. The navbar itself doesn't show up and your app still fully extends to the edges, but it's space is reserved so the status bar doesn't fully extend, making it look a little weird.
I'm on the Galaxy S8+, using Substratum Theme Engine with the Andromeda plugin. The theme is Swift Black.
You have three options here:
Use Substratum — I recommend aospUI Black or Dark. If you're on Oreo, you can use Andromeda, otherwise you need either root or a custom ROM that has Substratum built-in.
Use YouTube Vanced. This is what I use, and I highly recommend it! It blocks ads and gives you Red features like PiP and background play. It's available in root, non-root and Magisk flavours.
Or, just wait for YouTube's native dark theme to come out. I recommend this one the least, as it may take a while (even though it was just announced) and it gives you less control.
Theming:
theme Galaxy - theme Android system, SystemUI and stock apps. It allows for greater customization than other theme engines like substratum or Swift Installer. I still use substratum for third party apps, because it's easier to update substratum overlays when the apps are updated.
KLWP - custom live wallpaper maker.
Nova Launcher - replace stock launcher
Navigation:
Edge Gestures - my preferred navigation app
One Hand Operation+ - has lots of potential. I'm waiting for new updates to see if it can match Edge Gestures' capabilities and reliability.
Other:
bxActions - remapping Bixby button. I like it over Button Mapper because you can give the button different actions for screen on and off.
Tasker with AutoApps - automation and gives me greater control over my phone.
AdHell 3 - Has many functions: disabling apps, permissions, services, receivers; disabling mobile and Wi-Fi data usage for apps.
If you have no prior experience with Substratum, it might not be too easy to explain it in a short way.
You would need the Substratum theme engine app, which is free:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
Try it out like this first and see if it suggests that you need to buy an addon. If it does, you will likely have to spend a couple of bucks on the addon. They updated it recently and I think the addon might no longer be needed, but I have had it installed for ages and can't check what the experience for a new user is right now.
Let's assume you've got Substratum working. Now install this theme and then look for it in the theme list, in the substratum app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ohayoubaka.statusbarsamsung&hl=en
From there, once you open the theme, you should be seeing a lot of modules, each having a checkbox and dropdown menus. It is very important to choose OREO-only options if you are using Oreo and the module shows an OREO-only option. Please read everything carefully to avoid messing up your phone or experience.
One of the modules will be called 'SamsungSans' and it will have a drop-down option called 'Google Product Sans'. Select this option, and check the checkbox of the module. After that, click on the round button at the bottom right section of the screen and select 'Install selected'. Continue with the installation and then reboot your phone.
Now, go to the Android Settings, search for the Font options and you should see a whole bunch of new fonts. Simply pick what you like and you are good to go.
Similarly, if you want to theme your whole phone and 3rd party apps, I suggest buying this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brit.swiftinstaller
It is WELL worth the money and very hassle-free. I am using it since it was published and just love it. Easier to use than substratum, especially for people without theming experience.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please uninstall ALL overlays and restart if you plan on doing an Android System Update. After the update is done, re-install overlays and reboot, and you are good to go. If you do not do this, you will risk bootlooping your phone and having to do some recovery work.
To edit some links into OP's post:
> My current setup is:
>- Magisk with the Google Product Sans module, iOS 11.1 emoji module & YouTube Vanced Module.
>- Substratum with Dark Flux theme installed, default accent: Material Grey, Default Background: Dark Grey as well as Android P as the default Notification Style.
>- Navigation Bar Editor to hide the Navbar from all apps.
>- Pixel Launcher (with Pixel Icon pack) and Swiftly Switch as a Homescreen and Nav Bar replacement.
>- Apps: YouTube Vanced instead of traditional app, [Slides](/r/BoostForReddit) instead of official Reddit and Round screen corners to make the upper corners look the same as the bottom ones.
> If you have any tip please let me know
Include links so people can know how to do it if they want to. I tried searching out some of it to link and I don't know what you used.
Dark theme system-wide and a few minor visual fixes:
Substratum can theme different apps just like Samsung themes does with your system. You can install it from here. Usually it requires root to apply themes but there's also a key you can buy to enable rootless support for Samsung devices. You also need to download/buy a theme (I use Swift Black and Stock Black) and apply it via the substratum app.
Careful: read the manuals before applying themes or you might end up having to do a factory reset.
Of course you should finish it! It looks gorgeous!
Oh, and about the themes. If you have Android Marshmallow (6.0), then your phone natively supports all of the LAYERS themes. Just install this app, find a theme you'd like to use, apply and you're done!
Also, if you're rooted (seeing you have a Samsung Device, I think that Kingroot would do the job), there are a handful of custom ROMs with either CMTE (CyanogenMod Theme Engine), LAYERS, or Substratum, the last one being an (r)evolution to LAYERS. On the PlayStore there are lots of great themes for those modifications and, if you want, you can pretty easily create a new one, although it takes time.
Aaanayway, great job!
EDIT: Oh well, the app I wanted to link....yeah. It's been deprecated and is going to be completely replaced by Substratum (here's a link to the test version: link).
EDIT #2: well, Substratum needs root. So that's about that :/
As for the name, how about > iCons?
Unfortunately it's not as easy as 1-2-3. And a few paid apps are required, and as long as you're running Android 8.0 or 8.1 with your AMOLED device, you shouldn't really experience any hiccups. I'll link a couple YouTube references I used, and the apps I got from the Play Store. It supports most major apps, and I believe you can request some apps to have themes made for them. Good luck, this took me a while to fully understand initially.

Here's a guide I wrote. There's aren't specific instructions in the dev's thread:

Here's a guide I wrote up for the process to give you an idea of what's involved. It's not as bad as using an actual Substratum theme, because there's only 1 overlay you need. That being said, the overall process is definitely longer, more expensive and more complex than the apk method on Nougat:
> Required apps: > > * substratum theme engine (free) > * andromeda ★ substratum stock rootless backend 8.0+ (Unreleased) > ($1.99, occasionally on sale for $0.99) > * [Substratum] Samsung System Mods > (free) > * Immersive - Low-Level Immersive Mode > (free) > > Setup instructions: > > * Install all above apps. > * Download Andromeda script from XDA thread. Oh that's what's nice is that you do not need root with Oreo. So I have stock room and those themes. It's called Andromeda and the process is pretty simple.
Substratum: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
Andromeda: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda
Andromeda PC companion app: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/substratum/andromeda-desktop-clients-release-notes-t3668682
Swift Black: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brit.swiftblack.layers
Here's the guide. It's using the method from this XDA thread, but actually broken down into steps:
> Required apps: > > * substratum theme engine (free) > * andromeda ★ substratum stock rootless backend 8.0+ (Unreleased) > ($1.99, occasionally on sale for $0.99) > * [Substratum] Samsung System Mods > (free) > * Immersive - Low-Level Immersive Mode > (free) > > Setup instructions: > > * Install all above apps. > * Download Andromeda script from XDA thread. Just wanted to share this here, as I'd thought some of you might be interested in such a theme. Obviously for this theme, you will need a Samsung device running Oreo (such as S8 on Oreo Beta, or Snapdragon S8/Note 8 on the leaked Oreo builds). If you are unrooted, you'll also need the Andromeda add-on, otherwise you don't need Andromeda.
Substratum: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en_GB
Andromeda: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda&hl=en_GB
yoru.: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ohayoubaka.yoru&hl=en_GB
I used a combination of these three apps:
I believe 2 out of 3 of those are paid though. None of this requires any root by the way!
And, thank you! I appreciate the comment.
OMS is the framework required to use Substratum themes
I'm digging it. If you want to take it to the next level, I suggest that you download these: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.sungstratum
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brit.swift.samsung
I have the same model as you, and I have used many ROMs since I bought mine. The benefits of rooting are fewer than before, but there are still many really good reasons to root and try different ROMs. There are certain apps that give you extra benefits because they have root, like AdAway which is hands down the best ad blocker, I never see any ads, which makes your phone load faster and run faster. Backing up is also better when rooted. Also if you are using a AOSP ROM you can use themes with Substratum.
The ROM I am using now is crDroid 7.1.1 Nougat it is a AOSP / CyanogenMod Android based ROM and I love it, one of the best ROMs I have used, I have had no problems with it at all. That said since it is a AOSP ROM that means that the LG G3 camera will not be nearly as nice as the LG ROM so if the camera is very important to you then you will want a ROM that is based off of the LG ROM then you need to use a ROM like Fulmics which is also a excellent ROM.
Yes you can un-root and restore your phone to factory, and there are many other ROMs other than the two I linked to above, your mileage may vary, in other words you may experience certain problems with one ROM, but not another. Once you have flashed a few ROMs it becomes less scary to do and the fresh ROMs can make your phone feel new again, but you could also have some serious problems and brick your phone, so you have to be willing to take that chance.
It literally says "Substratum does NOT work with ROMs using the CM theme engine." on the Google Play Store page.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en is an app that needs root but lets you do theming.
Reminds me of substratum theme engine https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
~~Get Substratum here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en_SG~~
~~Get Andromeda here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda&hl=en_SG~~
~~Then follow the instructions here to enable Andromeda: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/substratum/andromeda-desktop-clients-release-notes-t3668682.~~
~~You will need to enable USB debugging on your phone, install Google's USB drivers (which you can find here; Andromeda links to a one-click driver install, but from what I can see, that is outdated and only supports up to Android 6.0) and run the windows client for Andromeda, which you can find in the original link above. Make sure to scroll down to see the install instructions for the different operating systems.~~
The TL;DR for why you need Andromeda is that Substratum lets you theme your phone without root. S7 is not supported by default, but Andromeda allows the S7 to use Substratum as well. Substratum is a theming engine, Andromeda is a tool to let you use Substratum on S7, and any other themes or skins you want to install is a separate install/purchase.
Swift Installer is not required for this method, so treat that as an alternative. Swift Black Substratum Theme+Oreo * Theme is the skin that you apply with Substratum, again something that you can do only with Andromeda.~~
Edit: I'm testing out Swift Installer because it seems much easier to work with. I'll update.
Edit: I'm getting the same issue with Swift Installer, but everything is much easier to manage, you get more accent colours and can swap them without having to install another skin or app, and the app feels snappier than Substratum. You don't have to mess with Andromeda anymore too.
This one? Sorry I'm not familiar with this...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
i have 95% after 1.5y
here's how i did it:
keep the phone between 15-85% always that i can, never charge more than 95%(happens rarely when i forget the carger on)
never let the phone below 10%, if gets to that turn off unless you absolutely need it.
charge less your phone, that means: use medium save power always, if your not a super power user you dont need the phone running 100%, so medium power puts your phone to 70% cpu power which is more than enough for 90% of the users.
use amoled theme system wide*, substratum + swift black
use amoled black wallpaper, dont let location on if not necessary, aswell as wifi and other services like sync, for this you can use "Routines" app to activate certain services when opening an app
go to google privacy and disable all their tracking
if you have Facebook or Messenger app installed, disable it and install another facebook app, like friendly, hermit(this is the best one) or any other one.
i did all of this from the get-go because where i live is really hard to change battery, not cheap and widely available

works on all galaxy devices
It depends on the device a little bit, but if you're on a close to stock version of Android, you can use Substratum to to it. You'll also need Andromeda and a theme. I liked Swift Dark.

You need ADB to enable it, IIRC, and app updates will break the dark theme until you update the theme (so turn off automatic app updates)
You can theme your phone really easily these days. Install Andromeda and then Substratum. That will give you access to thousands of themes that you can use to customise your phone. I use a couple of different themes, theres an XDA thread here where it's discussed. You will need to run a couple of ADB commands to make Andromeda work, but it's pretty simple and you don't need to root your phone.
if you're rooted or on oreo you can use substratum
You have Substratum, Andromeda, a computer and your phone is running Oreo?
If you do, great. Just follow the instructions from xda to apply it and get it working.
If you don't, you'll need those apps to get the overlays working.
Here's a guide. It seems like you can skip the Andromeda step now with the beta Substratum build.
Here's the guide. It's using the method from this XDA thread, but actually broken down into steps:

0pt navbar is the same as a hidden nav bar, right? If so, then that's been out for a little while, but you need Substratum for it.

We're still missing custom nav bar heights on Oreo though.
Forgot about that. Used the Substratum theme engine (no root needed): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
I believe you also need this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.sungstratum
And for the status bar icons: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ohayoubaka.statusbarsamsung
It's a little tedious because when you apply the icons, it automatically installs a bunch of apks one after the other (but you gotta click "install" and "done" after each one). Some themes can have a LOT of customization so therefore would have a lot of install prompts. Another notable thing you can change with Substratum is the look and size of the nav bar; just need to find a compatible Substratum theme.
try this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxKZdGuy-e8
but most of it is self explanatory (read the descriptions for each theme and app too). you need these to start (Oreo only):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda
Nope i don't believe any of the Gapps do. You either need to use a theme system like Substratum or an alternative app.

Substratum works without root if you buy Andromeda. The themes I've been using are Swift Dark and Swift Black. This XDA article will help you set it all up.
If you're willing to pay a couple bucks then the combination of these three will achieve that effect:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.sungstratum
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ohayoubaka.statusbarsamsung
No root required.
Sure thing.
I changed the theme with a Substratum theme which can be found here. I'm not sure whether this requires root; I think it depends on your ROM, as I use OxygenOS, and have root anyway.
Some examples of what the theme does:
Snapchat: Main View, Stories View
Chrome: Tabs View, New Tab View, Website View
I also manually theme some parts of my device, like my Reddit client, Sync for Reddit.
Sync for Reddit: Comments View, Form View
Google Play Books: Book View
Solid Explorer: Files View
I leave some parts of my device alone, as I like the freedom of a full colour pallette as opposed to just AMOLED black- particularly my home screen.
If there's anything else you'd like to see/know, just say.
I've been using this version of substratum for over a year. Is it the right one?
I absolutely hate the white background fixation we have on phones, computers etc. A dark background with gray text is much better. I run Stylish on Chrome to turn all websites (havent found one that I use which didnt have a dark theme) and Substratum on my phone to make all apps dark. A couple of apps don't have support from the theme I use yet (Swift Black, super fast updates and support) but most do.
I imagine the white backgrounds on Word and computers general comes from trying to mimic paper, which is familiar to us. However it's annoying as hell if the room becomes even slightly darkly lit (You cant always have it lit up enough to compensate) and is honestly kinda hard on the eyes compared to the dark alternative.
I still don't understand why so many companies and developers insist on the white backgrounds.
I used Substratum + the Samsung key for the app, and then simply downloaded this app to change the status bar and nav bar icons. :)
Nah it's safe to install overlays for the status bar. It's wehn you start trying other system things it can get messy. No root required aswell. I haven't had a single issue so far.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum And https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.sungstratum
Then for a status bar theme set: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dope.juancarlos.statusbar
Check Google Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
Instead of swift installer you can also use Substratum with Swift black or Swift dark. But you'll also need root for that.
If you are on Android 8, you can use Andromeda together with Substratum. (With Andromeda you won't need to root)
I use substratum+black and it looks beautiful! True black in so many apps. Snapchat WhatsApp

One way to do it is Substratum Theme Engine
You can swipe 2 times down, then you'll see the 3 dot menu, there you can disable media and devices 😁
If you want to remove the "notification settings and clear", then you need to use Substratum mods. Therefore you need the app Synergy, which allows you to use Substratum stuff on Android 9 and 10. With the app "Complete One UI" you have toms of mods you can use. One if them hides the notification footer.
If you still need help feel free to ask me 😊
Try Substratum Themes
You could try to install Substratum, if you want.
Use substratum theme engine.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
My colors don't work either, but I use Substratum.
If you don't want it anywhere no matter what, install substratum and samsung system mods. If you don't have root you also need Andromeda. When you select Samsung mods in substratum there's an option to hide navigation bar.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=substratum.draco.systemmods
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda
Another possible solution that I haven't tried is using this adb command "adb shell wm overscan 0,0,0,-125"
Edit: typo
Try Substratum.
Without root, you'll need three components, one is paid. Substratum is the theme engine. It's free. Andromeda is needed if you don't have root. It's paid. And finally, K_Klock will allow you to customize the clock and build a theme for Substratum to apply.
With root, you don't need Andromeda. Andromeda is just a way to bridge the isolation that exists between apps for security, and that's why you need a PC with adb for that step.
You can search for tutorials on these. I can't explain it all on mobile or that would take me a long time, but I'll cover some big points. Some things to know are that if you're rooted, you don't need Andromeda. And Andromeda plus unrooted Oreo is a bit annoying to apply a theme, since you have to connect to the PC, run a script that starts a server on the device that can interface with Substratum. You then can apply the theme you made for the clock, and then you have to reboot, connect to the PC again, run the Andromeda script, then enable the same theme again in Substratum, and it will actually be active. You only ever have to connect to the PC again if you update the theme or want to install another theme or theme component. You can reboot as much as you want, and it will retain the theme. It's just to set it you have to go through the tethered procedure, twice. With root, you just apply from the Substratum app and that's it. No connecting to a PC if you have root.
Substratum is a theming engine for Android.
It just worked. took me a while to do the individual overwriting of the internal files, etc, but it worked.
If u want the same substratum, start with downloading this: substratum theme engine
****Then download this: andromeda ★ substratum stock rootless backend 8.0+
Then this: - Victory - Substratum Theme ★ Oreo/Pie/Samsung

Follow all instructions to the T!
see this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
and then check out this: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=substratum%20theme&c=apps
Yep, that's the backend. You'll need this too, and a compatible theme.
Possibly using substratum
Nope
You just need:
Substratum theme engine : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
Andromeda : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
And of course, the theme: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.markbencze.alpha&hl=en_US
You need to install ADB on your computer, enable USB debugging (on the phone), connect it to your computer, and run Andromeda script and then you're good to go.
ADB : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
Andromeda scripts : https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/substratum/andromeda-desktop-clients-release-notes-t3668682
Substratum + Andromeda + StatusBar Icons (+extras) for Samsung
You can get a black navbar with the pixel icons and animation when pressing the home button.
I was waiting for someone to ask that :) I use Substratum with aospUI Dark and aospUI Black. If you're on Android Oreo, you can use Andromeda with a PC to get started. Otherwise, you need root or a custom ROM built to support Substratum.
If you're not willing to shell out cash for a theme, here are a couple alternatives: For Nougat and Oreo, Oreo only
Substratum uses Android's built-in theme service. So it's not the same thing as Samsung's themes.
look into substratum:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda
few mods offer stock launcher customizations:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=substratum.draco.systemmods
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.folgore95.viktoria
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ohayoubaka.statusbarsamsung
On Android Oreo, the whole OS is themeable through Substratum and Andromeda. The theme I'm using for the YouTube app is Swift Dark
Substratum + Andromeda + Samsung System Mods + Immersive.
Install all of these, enable the Remove navbar immersive overlay in Substratum, and enable either Immersive Navigation Bar or Immersive Full in the Immersive app.
You can get custom fonts, but it requires:
It's possible to do it without Substratum and Sungstratum, but it requires ADB and some terminal tinkering.
After the overlays are added, you can select the font of your choice under Settings
- Display
- Zoom and font

Similar to what qqppaallzzmm said, you can use substratum and sungstratum to get the emoji. There is a theme called status bars for Samsung which includes the ios 11 emojis.
Substratum: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
Sungstratum: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.sungstratum
Theme: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ohayoubaka.statusbarsamsung
After installing the theme, just go to substratum and find the overlay called Product Sans and Ios 11 Emoji. Install and reboot. After that, just go to fonts in settings, and ios 11 emojis will be an option. There will be 2 of them, but only one will work, so make sure you try both.

Read the description of the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en
Yeah that white notification bar is a really ugly imo. You can theme your device with substratum and Andromeda. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.andromeda
Mine looks like this: Andromeda
This was done Substratum and Andromeda apps on my phone and and Andromeda adb command via a PC. Not difficult at all!
If anyone is interested, I have a screenshot of the apps via Substratum that I used.
Here is a walk through of how to do so.
Not all apps will be themed/skinned as some do not look good themed/skinned. You can select exactly what you want to theme. for example you could select certain apps to run a dark themes and other apps to run a light theme.
Some apps crash but apps that give you issues can be "un-themed". For example Duo keeps crashing so I didn't apply the theme to it. Drive and Inbox by Google both run fine with the theme but look horrible so I removed it. I don't have many apps but if you want to know if the theme is applied let me know.
Lastly the wallpapers are custom. Here is a link to them:
Both are 1440x2560p!
Factory reset should fix it, although this is not a problem I've heard of so far... It's really strange and you might want to retrace your steps and try to avoid it in future. Most of us use launchers and icon packs as well (myself included), but to change the nav button graphically most people actually have to root, or own specific phone models that allow that.
Thankfully, Samsung's Android 7 is one such model that allows for deep theming of the phone, system-wide, which is really great.
To take advantage of that you would first need Substratum theme engine and then the Samsung integration key, which is paid but well worth it for some folks.
Once you have both installed in that order, you can make use of overlay packs or theme packs in other words, all controlled through the substratum app.
A lot of themes provide "System UI Navigation" overlays, which change the nav keys visually. You can also change the system, status bar, and individual apps.
The best benefit of this is using AMOLED black themes, which will reduce the screen's power usage by turning off pixels completely. It's a feature of any amoled screen on smartphones and on our S8s it's even better because we can theme so much of the phone without too much hassle.
Here is an example of my own nav bar keys, themed, alongside the status bar as you will see the icons and font there differ from the stock samsung ones (which I find terrible and was glad to be able to change).
A few things to note about substratum:
When you update an app that you themed over the Play Store, you will have to re-apply the overlay by removing it and re-installing it. If you get an error that means you will have to wait for an overlay update as well, which will appear in the play store too, under the install name of the theme pack you downloaded. Substratum itself also gets updated often
Whenever you do Android System updates, it's best to uninstall ALL overlays and then re-apply them only after the update is fully complete, otherwise you might risk issues or even bootloops
The way substratum works is that it literally installs these color changes to the system as new .apk files, so there is no side-loading or anything that will slow down the phone. It's like launching any other app. The apps themselves will keep all of the information and everything as you left it even if you apply and remove overlays all the time. Only the colors/themes change.
I've themed a lot of apps like all Google apps, Instagram, VLC player, Discord, Firefox, Nova Launcher settings, and others, and have not ran into any issues other than having to update and re-apply overlays from time to time.
It's just really nice to have almost ALL of your phone in amoled black :)
Edit: rofl at the negative comment rating, someone's feelings got really hurt in this thread
I'am using this theme I fond on XDA that I love.
Bunch of screenshots I took here.
It's a dark theme and its more extensive than anything I've found in samsungs theme store. But it works like a regular theme. You install the APK and it shows up in the themes app. However samsung has a limitation on side loaded themes where they only function as trials. Which means they get removed after 10 mins. You can stop this though.
Download the theme from XDA. Install Substratum. Launch it and it will ask you to download the samsung plugin from play store, its only a dollar or two (worth it for all the cool things you can do with Substratum). That will give you app called theme killer that stops side loaded themes from being removed. Apply the theme like normal, open theme killer tap the button and it will say theme service killed. Thats all, the theme will stick forever, including reboots etc. When you want to change themes just turn the theme service back on.
I used Substratum + the Samsung key for the app, and then simply downloaded this app to change the status bar and nav bar icons. :)
If you have a custom recovery (and maybe root, not sure) use TEAM BLACK OUT for black themed apps which can be directly installed in place of the original app or it can be flashed
If you have root & OSM/RRO commits (usually in stock or near stock android ROMs and specially made custom ROMs) just use Substratum as a theme engine for theming normal (white themed) apps
If you have Xposed, you can use Personalize as a theme engine which themes a few apps black. (Pro version needed)
There is no native dark/night mode theme. You can install Substratum and use a black theme, like Swift black. Once Substratum is installed you'll have a theme category in settings.
From the Pure Nexus XDA page >2.1 Q: How do I theme on Pure Nexus?
>2.1 A: Pure Nexus currently uses the Substratum system (Layers will no longer work here). You will need to download the Substratum app from the Play Store to theme and reference this post in this thread with all of the information you need to know include compatible themes and how-to's.
>2.2 Q: Is there a native dark theme? What theme is best? How do I find good themes?
>2.2 A: There is no native dark theme. However, you can theme your device with Substratum compatible themes. There is no "best" theme, as each person's preference is different. To find some good themes, either browse XDA's themes forum or search the Play Store for Substratum themes. Below are some nice dark/black themes that I have personally used/tested.

Download this, and apply it from there.
Appcloner is great for changing color shape etc... of app elements. If you are rooted you could also try substratum. Both shouldn't mess anything up in terms of functionality
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum
Possibly Substratum?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum&hl=en
There is currently only one method for non-rooted phones and it requires:
You do get an empty nav bar when your keyboard is open, but you can change the color of that bar using adb commands like usual. Choose the same color as your keyboard and you'll hardly notice it.
I honestly have no idea what you're talking about (or why you deleted your last comment). I downloaded the official substratum theme engine from the Play store, and I've been successfully using overlays from the Swift Dark theme pack for a couple of weeks. I never connected my phone to a computer, and I haven't done anything with any Andromeda apps or desktop clients. It was a very simple matter of:
That's it. No PC, no Andromeda. I'm not even rooted.
So I really have no idea what you're talking about, or what articles you're referring to.
