On my V20, which effectively has a notch via the second screen, changing the DPI via build prop or terminal messes with the alignment of the second screen. I'd imagine that the issue OP describes is similar if not the same.

For whatever reason, it is able to modify the DPI on the fly without messing up the alignment of the second screen relative to the primary.

Tiles is an all-in-one app which gives you a lot more toggles and settings to mess around with. It's not free, but it's the only quick settings app I need.
Some useful features include setting timers, toggling screen timeout on and off, and even changing the animation scales further than what the developer settings let you (without root).
I use Tiles to quick launch pushbullet and other apps. Tasker tasks can also be launched as well. It would be cool to have a tile that can quick paste the most recent item on your clipboard and push that to whatever device.

One five-second ADB command later and I have a toggle to enable immersive mode. You can choose to hide both bars, or just the nav bar if you still want the status bar up top.

It does require a small amount of ADB setup, but you only need to do it once. After that, you can set up a QuickSettings tile that starts up Immersive Mode.
Also, the dev is very responsive (in fact he just added three new Pixel 2 tiles, allowing you enable/disable "Always On Ambient Display", "Double Tap to Wake", and "Lift to Wake" via Tile as well.

Just download the app, search in it for "immersive mode", connect your phone with your pc, start adb and follow the short guide on your phone - sounds complicated but it's done in less than 5 minutes.
In case it never happens...you can use the Tiles app to toggle immersive mode on and off. You have to grant it secure settings permission with a single ADB command. The toggle button goes into your your quick settings pane.

Because widgets aren't really practical to everyday use. They never really were, the use cases where they are very limited and time constraint, not something you will want on your phone all day long like a calendar widget or a call log widget.
I wouldn't say its the users fault for not using widgets I think users have evolved and widgets now have served their purpose when app loading times and app optimisations wasn't a thing. Now the shortcut widget creates doesn't take that much time if done via an app maybe a second or two. 70-80% of widgets use cases are obsolete now, maybe 20-30% are useful but thats about it. Which means a very small % of users actually use them.
Music player widget is far less useful than it is now that its in your notification bar and lock screen. The widget is practically pointless because you barely every keep your screen turned on to use it.
Widgets which need to be updated to view content like fb or twitter are just an app which are a tap away so why not just make one tap instead of keeping them on the homescreen as widget to be updated 24x7 to eat your battery and data all the time?
So for your home alarm system a shortcut button like widget or the long press icon would be great and should exist. But then again this has the potential of being exploited or false unlocks. The easier its to unlock the more rates of unintentional unlocks. For such things I use an app called 'Tiles' which lets me create shortcut of anything and add it in the quick settings.

I picked it up on a sale a little while ago. I've not trusted Adaptive Brightness for some time and prefer manually setting brightness. This app just makes it easier to do. It creates quick setting tiles, and one of them is for manual brightness. I have mine set so it just rotates between Low, Medium and High settings (set by the user in the app) with each tap, but by default it pops up a menu so you can pick Low, Medium, or High. I personally set Low to 5%, Medium to 35%, and high to 75% for my Pixel 2 (non-XL).
There may be alternative ways to do something similar but Tiles can make all sorts of quick setting tiles so I think it's worth a first look, might have other options you'd like.

You need to use ADB as well to enable immersive mode but it also allows you to create and add new quick tiles. Personally, I'm a fan of the clipboard tile
Not natively at the moment, but you can add it through an ADB command which is fairly simple, just a little timely (mainly for the time to download and set up ADB).
Download this app and it'll allow you to add extra Quick Tiles, one of which is Immersive Mode which will allow you to hide the Navbar, Status Bar, or both and you can easily access then when needed by swiping up or down depending on the one you hide and need.
There's also this app as well which is a lot more easy to work with, but for me it was less than optimal and had a tendency to mess up keyboard use. But it's far more straight forward with no real set-up needed
Other than rolling back to an Nougat, not much. I LOVED the old DND, especially for movies and meetings where I could say "phone shut up completely for 3 hours" then it would go back to normal when that time elapsed. That's how it should be and I hope they fix in the future.

For what it's worth, Tiles has a USB Debugging tile you can enable for quick toggles. Can be rather handy. It's possible some other free app does as well, but I'm not familiar with said app if so.
Yes, yes, yes. Such a great feature. This coupled with Tiles to hide the top and bottom system bars makes for a great, full-screen experience in all apps without really affecting your ability to navigate.

I use the app Tiles to have a tile in the quick settings where I can easily switch between sound, vibrate, and silent. Works like a charm. I haven't tried it yet with the do-not-disturbe mode but it should work there too.

I'm looking for something very specific that probably doesn't exist, but let's give it a shot. I'd like some kind of widget window that can slide in from the right side of the screen, similar to how the Google feed slides in from the left. For my recommendation, I recommend Tiles. It let's you make custom quick settings buttons in your pull down menu and it has a hell of a lot of different options.

Based on your post, I just checked to see if I could make a custom tile, using Tiles, and I can. As with other solutions here it just brings up a log, doesn't restoration the notification, but it's not bad.
Tasker does not require root but from what I've heard there is a learning curve.
You could try other apps like Tiles or Quick Settings. I personally haven't tried them but they do have good reviews.
Pretty sure some carriers disabled that toggle for some reason. Perhaps you can try an app like Tiles to customize your quick settings

I agree with you. My solution: download TILES from the Play Store, create a new tile for an app and select the settings app. Now you can put it in anywhere in the quick settings. Hope it helps.
Did you try holding the power button + volume down button for a few seconds. TBH I also wished the power button screenshot was still athing. One more thing you can do is install an app called tiles, it should give you a quick setting tile to take screenshots. Link
Tiles app on play store will allow hiding the nav/status bar and is what I use. You will need to use ADB to grant some permissions but NO ROOT or anything like that is required and it's very simple to do this since they tell you exactly what to do.

As far as burn in:
7Pro bought in Nov 2019 - Use every day about 1-2 hours with less than 50% brightness. No burn-in (although I worry about it happening eventually).
I constantly change the DPI of the screen in developer options to help mitigate this (changes size of icons), and make sure to never leave the status bar or static things on the screen too long. I also change which icons appear on status bar every few weeks so they move around.
It seems inevitable with these Samsung displays, but I have hope that I can delay it enough that I won't care when it shows (hopefully after a couple years when the battery is shot anyways).
I tried out both the Tiles app and the Caffeinate app mentioned by /u/51837. The Tiles app has a huge assortment of other options but the "caffeinate" function is basically on or off. The Caffeinate app gives much better control. There are settings to control the default time to keep the screen on and how much longer to increment the timer on each press. There's also a sound profile available. Also, the Caffeinate app is free and has no permissions. Bottom line: I'm keeping both.
There are apps to manually enable "immersive mode". The app Tiles has a tile you can add for that, you click it and it hides both bars.
I use the tiles app to get a NFC tile. You'll need some give it write secure permissions through a computer but it's totally worth it.
Ah, OK. Since you made a specific point about approach not working, I didn't realize that Moto Display itself wasn't coming on in any circumstance. Try Tiles and see if that helps. The app itself doesn't let you change from the app, it just facilitates adding quick settings tiles for system and other actions. You enable the tile for adaptive display (which will make you use adb first to get permission), then go to the quick settings and tap the edit button, and drag the ambient display tile into the quick settings menu somewhere. Save and go back. Now there is a toggle in quick settings you can tap to turn on and off. It should toggle Moto Display with it, via the system ambient display that Moto has removed, but the toggle state still affects the Moto app.

I have a quick tile set to turn off/on AOD. You can do that using the Tiles app (no root required but do need adb on pc). Can also schedule AOD if you have root using Tasker and the Secure Settings app.
I used custom navbar for a few months and eventually switch to Tiles. Tiles Works a bit better because you can toggle it right from the Quick Settings menu and also you can set it to disable the bottom, top, or both bars. you will need to hook your phone to your PC again to Grant write access via ADB.

I replied to OP, but thought you might want to know too, so I'll paste the answer here too. You can install one of many apps that allow you to add quick settings tiles, and you can add an input method button, and it brings up the box that you'd get when tapping the button on the nav bar (which is not truly disabled, but just hidden out of bounds of the screen when not in use, which is why the system expects you to use the button that you can't see). I love the one button nav, except for this oversight.

You can also install an app called Tiles, and in the app enable the tile called "Monochromacy."
Now edit your quick settings tiles and there will be one named "Monochromacy" as an available tile. Drag that where you want it, and now you have a quick settings tile to toggle from color to grayscale without having to go through settings.
^(Tiles is also useful for a whole lot of other extra quick settings tiles, so you might find other things in it you'd use. Some tiles are for root only, and some need an extra permission that you have to grant using a computer and ADB, but the majority can be used with just normal permissions.)

Hello, my pleasure. I partially answered that question here, but yours has a twist. You can argue that I can do the majority with 3rd party apps but I liked those built in. So I'll wait to root and then see what needs root and what doesn't. Double tap to lock and use the fingerprint right away requires root and enabling toggles like auto brightness doesn't, you just need an app like tiles, but I don't like excess apps on my phone.

You will have to connect your phone to a computer and issue a one-time command to allow secure settings to the app. After that you can set a toggle in quick settings for immersive mode. I did have this set up at one point, I don't recall anything else.
I don't want to encourage you to ditch your efforts but I found an app that does this for me a little while back. The app is Tiles I currently use it for things like a caffeine switch, dpi and font size toggles and a monochromacy toggle. If you're looking for an app to do this for you instead of making your own I suggest you check it out, there's quite a few tiles to choose from. Some toggles require root access but quite a few (including the monochromacy one) do not.
Edit: I do see you said "home screen tile" ... Not sure about that one but some reengineering of said app may help you with that one.

There is a tile you can add to the quick settings that will change the ringer mode between sounds, vibrate, and the various forms of DND (priority, alarms, total silence). But it's not a single press of the tile button; it brings up a menu where you can choose the sound mode. Unfortunately that means you cannot change the mode from the lock screen without entering your password/pin/fingerprint first.
I don't have it either on Oreo. However, there's a cool app called Tiles that can add it to your quick settings, (ringer settings), among other very useful toggles.
Note, for those who want a total silence mode for their phone, regardless of slider setting, this has it.

In previous phones, I have used this app to give me a Quick Tile to toggle Immersive Mode. However, the results on this phone (at least with the Oreo beta) aren't what you'd expect. Instead of it going full-screen to use up the area on both sides of the notch, it instead goes full screen minus that area. It's unfortunate but I think Google asked Essential to implement it this way because of the unintended side-effects that you can have when an app tries to have a UI element at the notch without planning for it. I think that is the reason why apps are whitelisted instead of defaulting to work with it.
Adaptive brightness on this phone is very very sensitive. The way I "fixed" this issue is by downloading an app called Tiles and using their adaptive brightness feature. You're going to need to access a computer to run an ADB command in terminal to grant permission to the application.
Tiles has an immersive mode feature that works great on my Z2, as well as many other Quick Tile tweaks that are really useful.

One of my recent finds is Tiles to add shortcut tiles to your quick settings! So convenient! (see: screenshot)
I paid for the Tiles app which let's you add it as a quick setting. One thing to note is that you have to give tiles permission once before the app can manage some of the tiles. This is done through a one-time connection through adb and is documented in the app when you try to turn it on. The good thing though is that you can then turn it on and off with quick settings.

I've got a slightly different problem where changing the slider doesn't change the sound profile. Only way I can get it to change is to press down hard on it, and move it to the position I want so it gets registered by the phone.
From what you've described it seems to be a physical problem. I bypassed my issue by downloading an app called "Tiles" where I can add a "ringer mode" tile to the notification panel. This enables me to smoothly change the sound profile to whatever I want. Whilst it's not a permanent fix, it works great for me.

That's the thing i love about android. if you don't like something change it. just do it yourself. i have a quick setting toggle for immersive mode using the app Tiles. it's got some more really useful quick setting tiles like network traffic, google account sync toggle, and the ability to toggle shortcuts from other apps like tasker. You could also use an automation app (i like macrodroid for it's ease of use) to toggle immersive mode on and off automatically depending on what app you're using.

I don't think so with the fingerprint scanner out of the box.
I've always just used a launcher that has a "double-tap to lock" feature.
Another alternative would be using an app like Tiles to put a "Lock screen" tile in the Quick Settings pull-down and then using the "swipe down" on the fingerprint scanner to show it.

You could make a tile for it in Tiles and then place that tile in your quick launch items? So you'd be a swipe and a tap away and the power button would never be visible otherwise?

I have a Galaxy S10e so YMMV, but my phone has an option to turn off the screen while in a pocket. Probably want to make sure that's off. Also I've added an option to my quick settings tiles called "caffeine." It keeps the phone awake until you toggle it again. I toggle it on when I'm playing because my game doesn't keep my screen on otherwise. Or you could just use "Tiles" to give you a quick settings button that opens a dialog to change whatever volume you want. Also useful for quick access to other functions like multi-window or Do No Disturb options (instead of just on/off).
Root is only required for a few features, but not the whole app. The majority of the features work fine without root.
Yeah, it's just the colouring aspect of what you might have wanted. I recall layouts could have been changed by a Substratum overlay, but on Pie they are mostly disabled by Google :(

These are my recommendations:
If you plan to install the Oreo beta immediately
- Setup with no Google Account associated with it, no SIM card in it, and do not connect to WiFi.
- Skip through pretty much the entire setup wizard, with no data connectivity.
- Once into Android, go to the About screen and make sure you do not have the December 5 security patch installed. If you do, then you can't do the Oreo beta until they release the next beta (expected early next week). At this point, do a factory reset, insert the SIM, and set it up in Nougat.
- If you don't have the Dec 5 security patch, then go install the Oreo Beta now before you install any other firmware updates.
- After completing the Oreo Beta installation and getting into Android, now do a factory reset.
- After the factory reset, do a setup via the wizard just like you would on any other phone (insert SIM, connect to WiFi, add Google Account, etc).
If you do NOT plan to install the Oreo beta
- Setup with no Google Account associated with it but feel free to have your SIM inserted.
- Connect to WiFi during the setup wizard but skip most other things.
- Once you get into Android, install any OTA updates available (you may have none, you may have ~5ish)
- After all firmware updates are installed and you're running the December 5. security patch version, then do a factory reset
- After the factory reset, do a setup via the wizard just like you would on any other phone (insert SIM, connect to WiFi, add Google Account, etc).
Pixel Camera App
Go read the Camera section of my review to decide whether or not you want/need the Pixel camera app or not. It's not all peaches and cream.
If you have Oreo installed, only certain versions/settings will work. I touched on this in my early preview at the very bottom.
Launchers
If you choose to sideload the Pixel Launcher, don't expect to have swipe access to the Google Feed to the left. Many people like the Pixel Launcher even still but Nova is probably the most popular launcher for those who don't stick with stock.
Immersive Mode
I found it wasn't worth using (at least in Oreo). Pretty much every app leaves a black bar at the top where the status bar would normally be. I think it's a bug in Essential's OS but I'm not sure. The same apps do not leave that bar on a Pixel 2 XL.
However, if you still want it, there's a nice app called Tiles that gives you a QuickTile to toggle on/off Immersive Mode (it requires a one-time setup with ADB to grant the application a special permission, then never again).
A few other tips:
- All glass screen protectors seem to suck right now
- Tudia and Incipio make about the only cases worth buying (GLOST is my favorite)
- If you're a 360° camera user, check out Tudia's LULA case
- dbrand makes nice skins for the phone
- Google's USB-C/3.5mm adapter is the main other adapter that works with this phone
- USB-C headphones tend to have issues with the mic on phonecalls
- For a more pleasant UI (to combat jank), go into Developer Settings and set all animations to 0.5x and Force GPU on for UI (I forget the exact wording)

Tiles has a Heads-up notifications tile as well as many others.
The one button navigation screws it up, and Moto still hasn't fixed it. Luckily, it's easy to work around.
You can install either Tiles or Quick Settings to add an input method tile to the system quick settings pull-down. Just enable the "Input Method" tile in either app, then pull down the quick settings tray, tap the pencil icon to edit, and drag it up from the bottom to where you want it. Now you have a shortcut to change the keyboard at any time.
The apps are useful for a host of other neat quick settings tiles too, so you might find other useful tools. Some things require adb to give permission, but not the input method tile.

I think you can get the previous behaviour back with the Tiles app. With adding the Orientation lock tile and putting auto rotate in action, pressing the tiles would switch between portrait and auto rotate.

If you are new to Android download apps only from Playstore.
App Installation from apk files(Installation from unknown sources) is disabled by default by Android. It's for security reasons. Don't enable it until you are familiar with Android. If you need to enable it, you can always disable it after installing apk file. apkmirror.com is a trusted website to download apks in case you need it. But, If possible stick to the playstore apps.
Don't download cracked apps & games. Don't even search for it. You can buy apps from play store, It's safer option. You can also use "Google opinion rewards" app to earn google play credits. (Enough to buy 1-2 apps if you wait for 3-4 months)
Android provides an option to encrypt your device. On flagship devices, I don't think it will reduce performance that much. It is useful if you need more security.
Android doesn't need anti virus software. So, stay away from those apps. You should also stay away from Chinese apps like clean master, battery booster, cpu cooler, some flashlight apps with accesive permissions, UC browser, ram cleaner etc. Apps. These are just ad showing apps & doesn't work. If you have any doubt, you can always ask r/androidquestions about apps. Always check permissions before installing apps. And If an app is asking unnecessary permissions, find better alternative.
USB debugging is disabled by default in Android. If you want more security, keep it that way. It is useful for adb commands & for developers.
You can always disable app permissions after installing apps by going to settings > permissions. (It's location may be different on your device.)
You can set location accuracy to high, battery savings & GPS only. Use battery saving options when you are not using apps. When you open google maps, It asks for high accuracy gps settings. After using it you should manually set it to battery savings by going to settings > Location > GPS accuracy- Battery Saving. Google also provide one option for more accurate location. It is WiFi scanning options. You should disable it to save battery.
When you see 3-vertical dotes in any app. By clicking it you can see more options. When you see 3 horizontal lines(Hamburger menu), By clicking on it or swiping from left edge to right you will see sliding tab menu. Also Android app takes advantage of long press. So, you can also try long pressing on something for example contacts for quick options. Here is the example of music app that has long press for quick options feature.
You don't need EXTRA lockscreen app to boost your security. Just use default Android lockscreen. And use password + Fingerprint for better security. If you use pattern method, try to use as many dots as possible for more security. It also makes it hard to guess.

You are a new user. I will suggest you to go for stock Android device. Pixel 2 will launch on 4th October. However, If you choose Samsung phone, you will get some extra features. Most of the time new Samsung flagship phones are very smooth. But, stock Android is more fluid.
Flagship Android phones support 2 years of Android update. Google pixel phones support 2 years of Android updates & 3 years of security updates. After 2 years you may not get Android updates. That doesn't mean your phone will become useless. It's just that it may not get new features. However, If you change your phone every 2 or 2.5 year, It doesn't matter that much.
Ram management on Android & iOS works differently. Android provides true multi tasking. Because of that app can run in background and provide it's functionality. Download managers can download files in background. It's both good and bad. It's good because it provides awesome features. Sometimes it may use more battery because of bad written app. iOS doesn't allow this kind of things, It restricts apps. It also shrinks memory usage of background app. That's why 3 GB ram iPhone can keep apps in memory, For Android it will take 6 GB or more ram. But, In iOS you loose important features. Buy a good flagship phone if you were iphone 6S or 7 user.

however enabling immersive mode tile in quick settings require android sdk on your PC so you can run a command (no root needed). after that, you can toggle immersive mode, which hides the system bars. while you can already hide the nav bar in the latest updates, you cannot hide the status bar.
You could try an app such as Tiles to add more quick setting tiles. Tiles probably has the most quick setting tiles bundled together in an app, but its a paid app iirc. There's a bunch of other similar apps on the Play store that should be free though.
You can also use the Tiles app to add a quick setting to toggle hiding the status bar. (you will need to authorize it once with an adb command)

Meanwhile, the closest thing to what you were used to do is adding a settings widget to accessibility (long press your home screen>widget>settings>accessibility).
If you want a toggle switch, use Tiles. You'll have to give it some more permissions via ADB though.
However, I just did it through ADB commands since I don't need a toggle. Have it on all apps except Nova Launcher, Camera, and Settings (immersive settings causes some pop-up/dialog issues). This is the command I use:

Edit: I played around with it a little bit, Yes it kinda does interfere with samsung pay. There is a gap on either side of the Samsung pay 'tab' at the bottom of the screen, and if you swipe up there it will only bring up the nav bar. If you swipe up in the middle where Samsung pay is, it will bring up Samsung Pay and the NavBar underneath it.
If you are on Nougat Tiles has a quick settings toggle for immersive mode and the app doesn't even need root, just a permission that's granted through ADB.
I've found Tiles to be better than GMD Immersive, because it doesn't leave the annoying red bar at the bottom, and it lets you quickly switch between showing and hiding the status and navigation bars. Also, it lets you add many other custom quick settings. I assume you won't be rooting, so you would just have to run a command through ADB if you're comfortable with doing that.

This app adds more tiles to the quick tiles in Nougat. Rotation lock is one of the tiles it adds.
Easiest way is to use this app. It adds a ton of new toggles and is a great app to have. It has a immersive toggle that you can enable via ADBif you arent rooted.

In the playstore there are apps that let you add your own custom tiles to the quick tile settings. So you can get an auto brightness toggle back on a tile setting if you want.
